As the clouds turned grayish black, the rain mercilessly started pouring; chaos ensued with people running to seek shelter under the roofs of shops and cafes. Kohima – Across the Capital of Nagaland

Kohima, the quaint capital of Nagaland is wrapped in layers of history, marking its prominent role in the Second World War with the Battle of Kohima. The town snakes along hilltops, ridges and is surrounded by mammoth of rainforests. Perched at an elevation of 1261m above sea level, the town is majorly inhabited by Angami tribe of Nagaland. It was originally known as Kewhira but gradually the name was changed to Kohima by Government of British India, after they established it as headquarter of Naga Hills. The town today stands as a retreat for jaded urban population with its peaceful vibe, slow life and picturesque vistas.

History – The Battle of Kohima

The Battle of Kohima was one of the few battles of Second World War fought on Indian soil. The battle was fought in three phases in the year 1944 between British along with allied Indian troops and Japanese force.  With the battle ending on 22 nd June, the Japanese forces were defeated. With this collapsed the Operation U-Go by Japanese initiated to weaken British Force and invade the Hills of Nagaland and Manipur. The Japanese troops encircled Kohima with a plan to invade but gradually with the battle, they exhausted their resources and were pushed out of Kohima.

The battle lasted for around 4 months divided into three phases – 3 rd April to 16 th April, where the Japanese force tried to invade and capture Kohima Ridge. The second phase was from 18th April to 13 th May where the Japanese force was counter attacked by British and Indian troops leading to abandoning of the Kohima ridge by Japanese. The last leg of the battle was from 16 th May to 22 nd June where the Japanese were defeated and the battle ended. A lot of brave soldiers lost their life – Indians, British and Japanese, during the Battle of Kohima.

A quiet and pristine alternative to Kohima is small village of Kigwema, located roughly 46kms from the state capital of Kohima. It is walking distance from Kisama Heritage Village, the venue for the annual Hornbill Festival. There are a couple of homestays in Kigwema and main highway cutting through the village is flanked by terrace paddy fields.

The Kisama Heritage Village is literally a dead ground with Morung style huts – the infrastructure for Hornbill Festival, throughout the year except it comes to live during the 10 days of festival. Jotsoma village is enroute Khonoma and is a regular settlement dominated by Angami Tribe. It is not recommended to stay overnight as the accommodation facility is doubtful but a day trip to Pulie Badze is one of the flora and fauna hotspots close to Kohima. Accommodation Options in Kohima

There is no shortage of hotels and homestays in Kohima. You can make your booking through booking.com or AirBnB. I high recommend Eco-stay hostel , if you are looking for something in budget. The hostel is centrally located at TCP gate behind the war cemetery and above Federal Bank. The hostel has two dorms – each with capsule beds.

On the contrary, if budget is not a concern, do not miss the chance to stay at Razhu Pru – a luxury homestay with traditional aesthetics and warm hospitality. The homestay is surrounded by nature and the interiors are done in authentic traditional style.

How to Reach Kohima?

Kohima is one of the easiest places to reach in Nagaland with decent connectivity from every corner. It is well connected through public transport – buses and shared taxis, from almost all places in Nagaland. Assuming you are starting your journey from Dimapur, there are shared taxis and buses that ply from Dimapur railway station. The shared taxis charge Rs 350/- from Dimapur to Kohima. The nearest railway station as well as airport to Kohima is Dimapur.

Public Transportation in and around Kohima

There are three major bus stops in Kohima – BOC, TCP Gate and PR Hill. There are blue local buses that ply from 5.30 am to 7.00 pm every day except Sunday.

• TCP Gate is the central location and is the stop for Kohima War Cemetery. There are even shared cabs and taxis that ply to various places from TCP Gate.
• BOC is one of busiest stop for buses as well as taxis. If you planning to visit the Kohima Cathedral and the Museum take a bus to BOC, get town and ask someone for direction or simple use Google maps. BOC taxi stand has shared taxis that ply to different villages around Kohima. If you are planning to go to Kisama, Kigwema, Phesema, Zakhama and Visvema – take a shared taxi from BOC.
• PR Hill is known majorly for chic cafes and restaurants, even taxis are available from PR hill to Dimapur and other parts of the state.

If you can, I will highly recommend you to walk around the town. Kohima is pretty small and is easily doable on foot.

Best time to Visit Kohima

Kohima is an all year destination but the best time or say busiest time is during Hornbill Festival organized from 1 st to 10 th December every year. The price of all the accommodations becomes 3 or 4 times higher and the town becomes a lot more chaotic than usual. If you intend to visit Dzukou Valley during peak flowering time, the best time is from May to July.

Things to Know Before Visiting Kohima

• You need an ILP or Inner Line Permit for entering Kohima. It can be obtained from DC Court Dimapur, and Nagaland House in Guwahati, Kolkata, Delhi and Shillong. It is required by everyone except the residents of Nagaland and people employed in Nagaland with a work ID.
• If you plan to visit Hornbill Festival, make sure you book your accommodation early as everything is likely to get sold out or available at exorbitant price. I recommend camping with Kite Manja for Hornbill Festival , located within the venue site.
• During monsoons, the rain is a big menace and it can hit on you anytime. Make sure you are armed with ponchos or umbrella all the time.
• Alcohol is officially legally in Nagaland, so do not hunt for liquor shops around Kohima.
• Everything is closed on Sunday being a Christian State. Make sure you purchase your essentials or book your rides a day before. There are some cabs available though for Dimapur.
• The NST bus station is located close to TCP Gate. If you intend to travel by bus, make sure you check the schedule and book your tickets.

Starting from rabbits in Bamboo crates to honeycombs to borol, tadpoles in polythene bags, silkworm larvae, forest ferns, beef, fermented tofu everything is available here. The ambiance is lively where naga women are found dressed in sarongs and shirts, chewing betel leaves and selling beef, pork and dog meat, but have them only if you are ready and don’t force them into your stomach.

3. Visit And Pay Your Tribute At The Kohima War Cemetery

Image Source Visiting the Kohima war cemetery is a grave experience as you walk past 2337 memorials and graves that are cremated in the garrison hills. In April 1944, the Japanese troops surrounded a small troop of the allied forces who were going towards capturing Delhi. But the troops of the Japanese killed about 65,000 allied soldiers, many of whom were from Kohima. There is an inscription written at the entrance of the memorial, which says”when you go home, tell them of us, and say we gave our today for your Tomorrow”.

This is one place in Kohima, that tourists don’t wish to miss at all. This beautiful cremation ground is dedicated to all the soldiers who died in the course of the Japanese invasion during World War 2. The cemetery is well maintained with mowed lawns, lush green fields, and fresh flowers. The deceased soldiers were from the east, Japan, UK, West Africa, and Burma.

4. Trek To Mt Japfu

5. Take A Bite Of The World’s Hottest Chilli

Image Source The Bhut jolokia, considered to be one among the hottest chilies in the world is cultivated in Kohima on a large scale. This hot spicy chili is used as an ingredient in most of the recipes for consumption. Simultaneously, this chili also finds its application on fences and as smoke bombs as a preventive measure to keep wild elephants at bay. A typical Naga meal consists of smoked meat, fish vaporised in hollow bamboo tubes, sticky rice, and hot chili sauces. The Bhut Jolokia is indigenous to this region. If you are interested in history, a visit to the Kohima War Cemetery will be a worthwhile experience for you. This cemetery is dedicated to the 1,420 soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Second World War against the Japanese. During the war, these brave hearts had heroically blocked the Japanese soldiers at the border of India. This cemetery is located near Kohima city centre, on the northern side of Imphal-Dimapur highway. The cemetery is open for visitors on weekdays. The Kohima War Cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

4. Intanki Wildlife Sanctuary

Situated at a distance of 37 km from Dimapur, the Intanki Wildlife Sanctuary conserves several rare species of plants, birds and animals like barking deer, flying squirrel, mithun (gayal), wild dog, sloth bear, tiger etc. Spread over an area of 200 sq km, Intanki Wildlife Sanctuary is surrounded with lush green forest and mountains. The main attraction of this forest is Hoolock Gibbon, the only species of ape found in India. Though the forest can be visited anytime of the year, the best time to make a trip to Intanki Wildlife Sanctuary is from November to February. Besides, various types of animals you can find rare species of birds like hornbill, Green Pigeon, black stork etc in this forest.

5. Khonoma Village

Located just 20 km away from Kohima, Khonoma is a small village that bears the remembrance of the enriched heritage and cultural legacy of Nagaland. This Angami tribe village holds an important place in the history of Nagaland. The brave warriors of Nagaland who had fought with invaders to protect their motherland, used to live at Khonoma village. The traditional entrance gate of Khonoma speaks about the sacrifice of the villagers to save their land from the foreign intruders. You can find several memorials in the village built in the honor of those fighters who sacrificed their lives for the betterment of the village. Surrounded by dense green mountains and endowed with scenic beauty, this village attracts tourists across the world. Every tourist spot of Khonoma reflects the old glory of Nagaland.

By Air: Dimapur Airport is the only airport in Nagaland and is located about 68 kilometers from Kohima. There are daily flights available for Kolkata and Guwahati from where tourists can board flights to other parts of the country.

Reckoned to be the most beautiful and a lively district in Nagaland, Mokokchung is the home of the Ao tribe. Known for its hospitality, rich traditions and festivals, Mokokchung is gradually becoming a hotspot for tourism in Nagaland. It is often said that one of its destinations named Longkhum is a paradise for nature enthusiasts.

Its hillocks are adorned with Rhododendron and its pristine environment is worth falling in love with. Longkhum is also known for its ethnic handloom and handicraft and a sect called Limapur that practice animist religion. By Train: The nearest railway station to Mokokchung is Mariani (85kms) in Assam. Many trains operate from Mariani to Dibrugarh. One can avail buses and taxis from the Mariani railway station to Mokokchung.

By Air: The nearest airports to Mokokchung are in Dimapur (located at a distance of 212 kilometers) and Jorhat (located at a distance of 105 kilometres). There are daily flights from Guwahati or Kolkata.

The land of Konyak Nagas, Mon is an interesting land to visit in Nagaland. Famed for warriors with tattoos on face, head hunting prowess and blackened teeth people, Mon is a fascinating place to be in Nagaland. The Konyaks call themselves the descendants of Noah and practice agriculture; it is believed that have the finest harvest in the state.

By Road: Mon can be reached via Sonari by bus. Sonari is at a distance of about 65kms from Mon. Buses also ply from Simulguri but there are no direct services from Simulguri to Mon. One has to first reach Naginimora and then board another bus from here to Mon.

By Train: Lakwa railway station enroute to Sivasagar in Assam is one of the nearest railways stations to Mon. The other important rail head is Guwahati fromwhere one has to take the road for the remaining journey. One can also reach Dimapur by train and then continue by road to reach Mon.

By Air: The nearest airports to Mon are Jorhat (157 kilometers), Dimapur (296 kilometers) and Guwahati (479 kilometers). From all three places one can get conveyance in the form of state transport buses and tourist taxis.

Wokha is nature’s spectacular gift to Nagaland. Dotted with colourful orchards, carpeted with multi-hued flowers and fringed by hills and river, Wokha is a nature lovers’ paradise. About 4 hours drive from Kohima, this district is the perfect place to bask and see the glory of nature. A tourist village above Riphyim is a major attraction in Wokha district, this place is known to offer splendid views of a dam on Donyan River.

Khonoma Green Village

Khonoma Green Village is the result of responsible Naga tribes. Situated at a distance of about 20kms from Kohima, Khonoma Green Village is one of its kinds in India. The village is the home of the Angami tribe who have given up hunting and only practice agriculture (jhum or shift agriculture) to make a living.

The houses in Khonoma are made using natural means and it is a way of Angami to show concern for the conservation of natural resources. In this green village, baskets are woven and handloom work is carried on along with agriculture.

In Kiphire lies the highest peak of Nagaland called Saramati (3841m), where a trekker can enjoy a 3 day trek that passes through a beautiful Rhododendron forest.

Kiphire is dotted with scenic villages like Pungro, Salumi and Mimi. Amongst which, Mimi and Salumi are believed to be virgin lands. By Road: Kiphire is well connected by National Highway 155. The national highway connects Kiphire to Kohima, Meluri, Dimapur, and Mokochung. State transport buses and private taxis are regularly available for Kiphire from all major destinations in Nagaland. The state highway also connects Tuensang to Kiphire and Meluri.

By Train: Dimapur is the only railway station in Nagaland. To reach Kiphire, you need to reach Dimapur first and then take the road to reach Kiphire. From Dimapur to Kiphire, regular buses and private tourist vehicles are available.

By Air: Dimapur airport is the nearest airport for Kiphire. Tourists can take a flight to Dimapur first and then travel by road.

By Air: The nearest airport to Tuensang is Dimapur. From Dimapur, other modes of transportation are available. The other nearby airport to Tuensang is in Jorhat (187 kilometres).

Longleng is known for its adventurous 32km road that is often taken by thrill-seekers. Longleng is the home of Phom Nagas, who are considered exceptionally skilled in pottery, bamboo work and spinning. The market place in Longleng is the major attraction, which till today maintains its old charm. The Phoms are also known for preserving their traditions and culture by the means of their festivals and artefacts and the best time to visit Longleng is during the festive season.

The main festival celebrated here is called Monyu , which marks the end of winter season and the beginning of summers. It is a six-day festival that displays the best of Longleng culture. By Air: Dimapur Airport is the only airport in Nagaland, so, if one has to reach Longleng by air, one should board a flight to Dimapur and then take a road trip from there. It takes about 12 hours by to road reach Longleng from Dimapur via Imphal.
