Often we're asked if size affects price. The cost of a Norwegian cruise isn't directly correlated with size. You won't find that the bigger the ship, the more the cost. Nor will you find the opposite. You won't necessarily pay less for the largest NCL ship vs the smallest. It will all depend on the specific itinerary. First, a little clarification is needed before viewing our sizing chart. We're measuring Norwegian ships size using the metric, "Gross Tonnage." This always causes a bit of confusion amongst our community members. It's not simply "weight" that determines this size measurement. The definition is technical and boring, but we'll provide it anyway.

Are you still awake? Good. So why do we use this measurement to determine Norwegian Ships Size? As noted above, it's used for safety rules and whatnot. As such, it's the standard across this cruise line and all others. Every passenger cruise ship will have this measurement . That makes it easy to compare ship size across ship, class, line and more.

Norwegian Cruise Ships by Size, Age and Class (Updated 2022)

Norwegian Cruise Line has an active fleet of seventeen ships with a further two ships due in 2022-23 ( Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva ) plus, a further four more ships due between 2024-27.

The fleet is primarily based in the United States and sails frequently from the ports of Miami and Port Canaveral. However, they do also sail from New York.

Additional sailings take place throughout Europe, including Southampton.

In this guide, we will cover all the different ships in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet and how they compare to each other.

Introduction to Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line or NCL as it is more commonly known amongst cruisers started off back in 1966. However, it didn’t actually cruise from Norway originally!

It was founded by two men, Knut Kloster and perhaps more famously known now, Ted Arison (of Carnival Cruise Line ).

Their first vessel Sunward , a modified car ferry which also provided passenger services operated between the ports of Southampton and Gibraltar. It wasn’t long after that that Ted Arison left to found Carnival Cruise Line and Knut Kloster grew Norwegian Cruise Line to what it is today.

It wasn’t until 1971 that Norwegian Cruise Line had its first custom-built cruise ship, Starward delivered into service. Like the original Sunward the two ships also had car-carrying capacity, albeit via a well-concealed stern (rear) door system.

Fast forward to 2000 and NCL was sold to Star Cruises (a subsidiary of Genting Hong Kong) – this lasted until 2007 when Star Cruises sold 50% to an investment management company ( Apollo Management ) and then in 2013 the company reorganized again to become Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.

Since 2013, the company has acquired two further cruise brands ( Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises ) and continues to grow the NCL fleet with several new builds announced for the current decade.

Whilst NCL has been one of the slowest to return to service (with Norwegian Getaway still not due back in service until November 2022) the cruise line has taken on additional debt to manage the day-to-day operations of the company and therefore it is more than likely to stay around!

What does ‘tonnage (grt)’ mean.

GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) is a term used to calculate the volume inside a ship. It is a measure of cubic capacity and is calculated by the total volume from inside the hull and decks of the ship. 1 GRT = 100 cubic feet of space. In essence, the bigger the GRT – the more ‘space’ the ship has for passengers, cargo, etc.

How are ‘Passengers (Max)’ calculated?

You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them. the ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. This number is unlikely to be reached very frequently.

Are all norwegian cruise ships new builds.

Actually, NCL has possibly one of the most complicated fleets as a good majority of their ships are fairly old (compared to some of the other cruise lines).

Norwegian Sky for example was originally constructed as Costa Olympia , but was actually sold during construction to NCL and sailed as Pride of Aloha from 2004-2008.

Both Norwegian Star and Norwegian Dawn were both originally ordered for Star Cruises ( Superstar Libra and Superstar Scorpio respectively) but ended up being transferred to NCL before they launched.

Norwegian Spirit was built as SuperStar Leo for Star Cruises and sailed with them from 1998 until 2004 when she transferred to NCL and was renamed.

Norwegian Jade was previously named Pride of Hawaii for NCL America. She entered service in 2006 and was transferred to NCL, renamed and has been sailing for them since 2008.

Final thoughts.

Norwegian Cruise Line is a large cruise line in the industry, but has been overtaken by many others ( Carnival Cruise Line , Royal Caribbean to name just two) – however, NCL has been groundbreaking when it comes to bringing new ideas to the cruise industry.

They were the first to offer a more casual-relaxed dining approach, with any-time dining instead of the traditional two-set timed dining system that other lines previously (and still) use.

Thanks to the SS Norway (which NCL acquired in 1979 – then named France ), Norwegian rebuilt the liner as a cruise ship and added vast amounts of extra space for entertaining cruise passengers – something that set the boom in large cruise ships in the industry going.

These days, Norwegian is a very popular cruise line that still brings out a number of ‘firsts’ over other lines (such as Go-Karting at sea), and whilst their fleet is on the slightly older side, they will have some much newer and larger vessels being delivered over the next few years.

Norwegian Aqua – 2025

Norwegian Aqua is scheduled to become Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship in the fleet beginning in April 2025. She will be sailing Seven-Day Caribbean Voyages from Port Canaveral, Fla. She is the first ship in the brand new Prima Plus Class. She is 156,300 GRTs and carries 3,571 passengers (based on two per cabin).

A dispute ultimately resulted in delivering only one ship in the Epic Class. When built, Norwegian Epic was the third-largest cruise ship in the world in June of 2010.

Pride of America – 2005

Pride of America is the only ship in the  Pride of America Class . She is 80,439 GRTs and carries 2,186 passengers (based on two per cabin). The initial construction of the vessel began in 2000 in the United States as part of a plan for a US-built and US-flagged cruise ship under Project America. Still, the project failed, and she was eventually purchased by Norwegian Cruise Lines and completed in Germany.

Pride of America  was inaugurated in 2005 and was the first new U.S. flagged, deep-water vessel cruise ship in nearly fifty years since the  SS  Argentina  of 1958. The Godmother is a former U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.

Norwegian Dawn – 2002

Norwegian Dawn is the second ship in the  Dawn Class  and is the sister of  Norwegian Star.  She is 92,250 GRTs and carries 2,340 passengers (based on two per cabin). She was originally intended to operate with  Star Cruises  under the name  SuperStar Scorpio , but it was later decided that she would be delivered to  Star’s  then subsidiary,  Norwegian Cruise Line  as the  Norwegian Dawn  in December 2002. Her Godmother is actress Kim Cattrall.

Norwegian Star – 2001

Norwegian Star is the first ship in the  Dawn Class  and is the sister of  Norwegian Dawn.  She is 91,740 GRTs and carries 2,348 passengers (based on two per cabin). The ship was originally ordered by and intended for  Star Cruises , and it was originally named  SuperStar Libra  before being transferred to Star’s then subsidiary, Norwegian Cruise Line.

Norwegian cruise cfo dismisses talk of a slowdown: ‘we are not seeing’ it.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings doesn’t expect expect to see his a slowdown in its revenue, executives said Wednesday.

“As we’ve said on the last call and this call, we are not, and I will repeat this, we are not seeing deceleration,” said Mark Kempa, chief financial officer and executive vice president, during an earnings call.

“I don’t know how many more times I can say that across different calls and conferences,” he said. “We are getting back to a more normalized yield growth in terms of our business, which we’ve always said will be somewhere in the low to single digits. We obviously continue to pursue much better than that.”

(“Yield” refers to the average amount of revenue earned per passenger per day.)

Norwegian Cruise forecasts net yield growth to be 4.3% in the second quarter, down from 16.4% in the first quarter. Kempa said the drop has more to do with the second quarter being impacted by the new conflicts in the Middle East and Red Sea in April.

“It’s not really a deceleration issue. It’s a comparison issue from quarter to quarter,” Kempa said.

Middle East Impact on Cruises

The conflicts in the Middle East and the Red Sea have impacted yield growth in the fourth quarter. Despite the geopolitical impacts, Norwegian expects to see healthy pricing and yield growth.

The cruise operator, whose brands include Norwegian, Oceania, and Regent Seven Seas, has canceled all its Red Sea itineraries through 2025 and rerouted all its ships to avoid the region.

In the first quarter, the company generated total revenue of $2.2 billion, a 20% increase from last year. Consumer demand across all three of Norwegian’s brands remains resilient and healthy. Pre-cruise purchases are up 16% over the same period in 2023, said Harry Sommer, CEO and president of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.

Electrifying Norwegian Fleet

Norwegian also successfully converted at least half of its fleet have adopted technology that helps them reduce emissions. “We’re also proud to announce that 50% of our company-wide fleet is now equipped with shore-side technology, achieving our year-end 2024 target well ahead of schedule,” said Sommer.

“This is key to our journey to minimizing emissions during port stays and contributing to cleaner air in the port communities we visit,” said Sommer.

Investments in Private islands

Norwegian executives plan to increase their investment in their private islands Harvest Caye (in Belize) and Great Stirrup Cay (in the Bahamas) once they get more access.

“Once we have confidence that we can visit there almost 100%, we certainly believe that it will be worth making the investments to continue to improve the guest experience as long as we focus on the things that get value,”  said Sommer.

If your idea of getting away from it all includes a vacation without the kids, consider booking an adults-only or adults-oriented cruise . While some lines provide a fully adults-only experience (i.e., children are not allowed on board), others offer adult-focused venues and activities on the ship to keep you separate from younger patrons.

Travelers ages 18 and older are welcome aboard Viking 's adults-only ships, which feature destination-focused itineraries around the world. The line's 11 oceangoing ships carry between 930 and 998 guests (at double occupancy) and offer luxurious, comfortable Scandinavian-style spaces. The line will add Viking Vesta to its ocean fleet in 2025.

Viking's exploration program boasts special access to behind-the-scenes experiences curated for travelers who are interested in history, food, the arts or science. Immerse yourself in local culture with a visit to a traditional family farm near Bergen, Norway, or spend an evening dining on Chinese specialties at a home-hosted dinner in Shanghai .

In addition to these off-the-beaten-path excursions, guests can visit iconic sites like the ancient city of Ephesus (Kuşadasi) in Turkey and the Acropolis in Athens, Greece . Viking also hosts onboard enrichment programs like cooking classes and lectures by historians. Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations with a private veranda, all meals (including specialty dining venues), wine and beer at onboard lunch and dinner, 24-hour room service, one free excursion per port, complimentary Wi-Fi access, and access to onboard amenities such as the Nordic Spa and fitness center.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages offers an adults-only retreat for guests ages 18 and older. The line currently has three sister ships: Scarlet Lady (the first in the fleet), Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady . The line's fourth ship, Brilliant Lady, is set to debut in September 2025.

All the ships in this adults-only cruise line feature 1,404 cabins (most with balconies) and RockStar Quarters suites, where guests have access to Richard's Rooftop, an exclusive outdoor deck space. The superyacht-inspired vessels boast 20-plus eateries, including restaurants by Michelin-starred chefs, and a variety of onboard fitness and wellness spaces. At Redemption Spa, relax and recharge in the mud room or salt therapy chamber – and then take rejuvenating dips in the hot and cold plunge pools. You can even order a bottle of bubbly anywhere on the ship via the Virgin Voyages app's secret "Shake for Champagne" feature.

Itineraries on Virgin Voyages span destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and Morocco, as well as trans-Atlantic crossings. The line will also feature 21 new ports across its global fleet in 2025, including destinations in Iceland, Turkey, Oman, Italy, Portugal, the Cayman Islands and more. Cruise fares cover meals at all the dining venues and basic beverages such as soda, water, tea and coffee. Gratuities for the crew, Wi-Fi access, entertainment and group fitness classes are also included. While on board, be sure to indulge in a swanky dinner at The Wake and an immersive show at The Red Room, a unique multiform theater at sea.

P&O Cruises

Two ships in P&O Cruises' U.K.-based fleet – Arcadia and Aurora – are exclusively for adults 18 and older. Arcadia, the slightly newer of the two ships (debuted in 2005), carries 2,094 guests at double occupancy, plus 866 crew. The ship departs from Southampton in the U.K. and sails to a variety of European destinations, ranging from Spain and the Canary Islands to Norway and Iceland; some cruises visit the U.S. and Canada. The ship will also sail world cruises in January 2025 and 2026.

Arcadia's 15 restaurants, cafes and bars include Indian cuisine with a British twist at Sindhu, as well as steaks and seafood by renowned British chef Marco Pierre White at Ocean Grill. Passengers can take a class to sample the line's branded gins; sip Champagne at Intermezzo, the ship's cocktail and Champagne venue; or enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif at the yacht-inspired Spinnaker. After exploring exciting ports of call, head back on board to enjoy Arcadia's elegant interiors and top-notch service. You can splurge on a stone therapy treatment and a visit to the thermal suite at the spa for some extra pampering, followed by a live show at the three-tiered theater, The Palladium. Then, finish off the evening dancing the night away at The Globe.

Aurora is a slightly more intimate ship, carrying 1,874 passengers (double occupancy) and 850 crew members. A four-level atrium gallery sits at the heart of the vessel. Itineraries include destinations in the Mediterranean, the Baltic, the British Isles, Iceland, the Caribbean and South America. There are 19 restaurants, bars and cafes on the ship, including club-style restaurant Alexandria and casual spots like The Beach House. After dinner, live entertainment and dancing await you at the show lounge Carmen's, as do larger productions at the ritzy 660-seat Curzon Theatre.

Top Cruises Designed for Adults

While some all-inclusive – or mostly all-inclusive – boutique and luxury cruise lines are family-friendly, many of the onboard venues and activities are adult-by-design. Since there are few (or no) activities geared toward younger cruisers and no babysitting services, you typically won't find parents with young children on these ships.

Azamara's four upscale boutique ships provide immersive travel experiences geared toward adults. These smaller ships – accommodating a maximum of 702 guests – sail waterways and rivers that larger ships can't access, docking in city centers and unique ports of call around the globe.

Many Azamara voyages also offer longer stays and overnights in port, unlike some competitors' itineraries. Some even feature special events, such as a 12-night voyage from Rome to watch the Monaco Grand Prix in May 2025, or a 25-night cruise in February 2025 from Buenos Aires, Argentina , to attend Carnival in Rio de Janeiro . In addition, the line is extending its offerings on Country Intensive voyages in 2024 and 2025 with itineraries in various continental European countries, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Iceland and Australia.

On board, you'll find a wide selection of casual and formal dining options ranging from Windows Cafe to the main dining room, Discoveries Restaurant. Specialty restaurant offerings include top-notch steak and seafood at Prime C and Italian fare at Aqualina. Atlas Bar is a unique venue on Azamara Onward (the line's newest ship), though its artisanal cocktail menu is also available on the line's other ships. Discoveries Lounge is another guest-favorite spot, and wine aficionados will enjoy pairing limited-production and rare vintages from the Wine Cellar with dinner.

Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations; select spirits, wine and beer; gratuities; 24-hour room service; and nonalcoholic beverages. You'll also have access to complimentary AzAmazing Celebrations with special evening and daytime events ashore and on the ship. You can purchase a package that includes additional amenities like unlimited Wi-Fi, specialty dining, shore excursion credits and other perks. Butler service and other extras come with suite accommodations.

When it launched in 2019, Scenic Eclipse I was touted as "The World's First Discovery Yacht." The intimate vessel offers an all-inclusive, ultra-luxurious experience for just 228 guests (double occupancy). The line's second luxury yacht, Scenic Eclipse II, which is nearly identical to its sister ship, debuted from Lisbon, Portugal , in April 2023. The Polar Class 6 rating enables these two yachts to sail to destinations like Antarctica; on these expedition-style voyages, the ship carries only 200 guests and offers a nearly one-to-one crew-to-guest ratio.

All suite accommodations include a private veranda or terrace; butler service; state-of-the-art amenities; a king-size Scenic Slumber Bed; and an in-suite minibar stocked with wine, spirits and other personally selected beverages. You'll also find indulgences like onboard helicopters for intimate excursions and the line's submersibles for underwater exploration.

Guests can enjoy up to 10 dining experiences on the ship, including French fine dining at Lumière; innovative Asian flavors at Koko's Asian Fusion; Italian, steak and seafood specialties at Elements; or an immersive dining experience at Chef's Garden @ Epicure. When it's time for an after-dinner drink, sample craft cocktails or the impressive selection of whiskeys available at Scenic Lounge Bar. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Following Seven Seas Grandeur's launch in December 2023, this line now has six luxury vessels in its fleet. Silversea Cruises

Silversea's all-inclusive luxury ocean and expedition cruises offer voyages to more than 900 destinations across the seven continents. Silversea's 11 ultra-luxury ships and expedition vessels range in size from 51 to 364 suites and boast spacious ocean view accommodations – most with private verandas. Cruise fares cover door-to-door transfers from home to the ship, including airfare (business class in some destinations) and pre- and post-cruise hotel stays. On board, guests will have butler service, a nearly one-to-one ratio of guests to staff, 24-hour gourmet dining, premium alcoholic beverages, one complimentary shore excursion in each port, gratuities and more.

Silver Ray is set to become the 12th ship in the Silversea fleet when it debuts in summer 2024. The luxury vessel adds more open spaces and top-notch cuisine. Silver Ray is also the second vessel in the fleet to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and is billed as a more sustainable cruise ship.

Four of the line's ships are purpose-built expedition vessels that sail to the farthest reaches of the Earth, including Antarctica, the Arctic and Greenland, French Polynesia and the Pacific, Asia, and more. On these sailings, guests will experience immersive exploration with as many as 28 expedition staff per cruise. Unique upcoming itineraries visit Greenland and the Arctic Circle, as well as remote locales like Robinson Crusoe Island, Tahiti and more.

Seabourn features an all-inclusive adult-focused experience on its five luxury ocean vessels and two expedition ships. One of the line's newest ships, Seabourn Pursuit, is an ultra-luxury Polar Class 6 purpose-built expedition vessel with 132 oceanfront veranda suites. The ship is equipped with two submarines for underwater exploration, kayaks and 24 Zodiacs. There's also a 24-person expedition team to assist guests with exploring far-reaching destinations like Antarctica, the Arctic, the Kimberley region of Australia, the Amazon and the Northwest Passage.

The new Seabourn Ovation accommodates up to 600 guests (double occupancy) and offers amenities found on most of Seabourn's ships: well-appointed oceanfront suites, living areas with dining tables, verandas and nearly a one-to-one staff-to-guest ratio. Guests can try Seabourn's new Mediterranean venue, Solis, on four of the line's ships, including Ovation. You'll also find health and wellness programs curated by Dr. Andrew Weil.

The Seabourn Conversations program is another highlight. Accomplished experts host adventures ashore, participate in meals and chat with guests on board. For a special treat, don't miss the Caviar in the Surf beach party. This event (available in select destinations) includes chilled Champagne, caviar, music and a barbecue set against a backdrop of white sand beaches and turquoise waters.

Windstar Cruises

Windstar's six intimate ships accommodate between 148 and 342 guests. Passengers can choose between cruising on one of the line's three-masted Wind Class vessels or one of its three Star Plus Class ships.

Windstar just announced the addition of two new ships to its fleet; Star Seeker is expected to launch in December 2025, followed by Star Explorer in December 2026. These two vessels will feature 112 suites with private verandas and infinity windows, two Owner's Suites with wraparound balconies, a water sports platform, a two-story spa and fitness center, and more. The ships are constructed with ice-strengthened hulls that position them for exploration in remote destinations like Antarctica.

Windstar's adult-focused and casual – but still elegant – onboard experiences feature locally inspired top-notch dining, guest lecturers, a water sports platform on all ships, an open bridge policy and an engaging social environment. If you're looking for a romantic getaway, Windstar is also regarded as one of the most romantic cruise lines for a wedding, honeymoon , vow renewal or anniversary trip, especially in magical destinations like the South Pacific or Europe.

When it's time to relax, The Solarium is a popular adults-only area located on the Resort Deck of all Celebrity ships. This light-filled pool area encased by a glass dome is the perfect quiet space for reading a book or taking a nap. On Norwegian 's Bliss, Escape, Getaway and Breakaway ships, the Vibe Beach Club sun deck invites guests to relax in oversized hot tubs and comfy daybeds, adding perks like a full-service bar and chilled towels. Guests can enjoy two-story beach clubs on Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Encore, while the clubs on Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva include the line's first infinity hot tubs. Thanks to a full glass canopy over the interior space, adult passengers can enjoy quiet lounging areas, swimming pools and whirlpool tubs with a view, no matter the weather. Select ships feature a cascading lagoon for further relaxation.

Be sure to grab a tropical cocktail or zero-proof drink at Solarium Bar (or Sunshine Bar, on Quantum ships) to sip poolside while enjoying the ocean vistas. Guests of both bars must be at least 21 years old when sailing from North America or a minimum of 18 when departing from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Adult cruisers (18 and older) can relax and chill out at the first suspended infinity pool at sea at The Hideaway on Royal Caribbean's newest ship, Icon of the Seas. If you're looking for a relaxing, fun and romantic vacation without the kids in tow – and you don't want to deal with the other passengers' children on your getaway – consider booking a sailing specifically for cruisers at least 18 years old. Alternatively, select a cruise line or ship that caters to mostly adults and doesn't offer any services, kids clubs, babysitting or activities for children.

You don't have to be a kid to be a Disney Cruise Line fan. While the line does not have an adults-only vessel within the fleet, there are plenty of kid-free spaces for adults only. Adults can enjoy cocktails, dinner and entertainment in several venues and relax at designated pool areas on the ship. There's also private, adults-only stretch of beach, Serenity Bay, on the line's private island, Castaway Cay.

Norwegian introduces new cruise discount, onboard credit offer for teachers

School is nearly out for summer, and Norwegian Cruise Line is offering teachers a deal on their next vacation.

The cruise line launched a new cruise discount for teachers this week, giving educators and related staff 5% off their fare and a $50 onboard credit. The year-round offer comes as Norwegian marks the return of its Giving Joy campaign, which awards free trips to teachers who are “making a difference in their classroom and communities,” the line said in a news release .

"We are proud of our history of thanking educators for their hard work and commitment to shaping the next generation of future leaders," Norwegian Cruise Line President David J. Herrera said in the release.

"To honor these education heroes for the long-lasting impressions they make inside and outside the classroom, we are excited to not only award 20 teachers on the fifth-year anniversary of Norwegian's Giving Joy program with a free vacation aboard the soon-to-debut Norwegian Aqua , but to also extend the recognition to the broader educator community across the U.S. and Canada with our new Teacher Cruise Discount,” he continued. “Travel is a powerful means of education, and we look forward to welcoming educators to join us on board to explore the world.”

What are the terms of Norwegian’s Teacher Cruise Discount?

The discount applies to active pre-K-12th grade classroom teachers, principals, assistant principals, school employees and college or university professors, according to the line’s website . They must be 18 or older and legal residents of the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico or Canada.

Norwegian Cruise Line vs. Carnival Cruise Line: Battle of the big-ship brands

If you're considering a cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line or Carnival Cruise Line, you're looking at two big-ship brands offering lots of onboard activities and attractions at an affordable price.

The two highly popular cruise lines operate fleets of megaships with facilities you would expect to find at a resort, such as casinos, pools, restaurants, live entertainment, fancy spas and lots of bars.

Both lines offer something for everyone. Couples, seniors, solo travelers and families with kids come on board for a lively roster of activities and some "wow" attractions. Both lines focus much of their attention on fun-in-the-sun itineraries in the Bahamas and Caribbean, sailing from U.S. ports. Norwegian also has the only ship that sails year-round in the Hawaiian Islands.

Let's compare Norwegian vs. Carnival to see what they have in common, and what they don't, to help you find the cruise that's right for you.

Size of ships

Norwegian Cruise Line 's 19 ships carry from just over 1,900 passengers (small by megaship standards) to around 4,200 passengers. The line is not trying to win the size war ( Royal Caribbean , for instance, has ships that top 6,000 passengers) but has plenty of excitement on board. For example, some of the latest Norwegian ships are topped by multilevel go-kart racetracks, ropes courses and laser tag arenas.

Carnival Cruise Line 's larger fleet has several 2,100-passenger ships, though most Carnival ships carry 3,000 to 4,000 passengers. The latest ships — Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee (debuting December 2023) — have a passenger capacity topping 5,200. Those ships are topped by real roller coasters, an industry first.

Mardi Gras also debuted in 2021 as the first ship in North America to operate on cleaner burning Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), which reduces the ship's output of carbon. Carnival Celebration and Jubilee, as well as Norwegian's newest ships, Norwegian Prima and Viva, operate on LNG as well.

Cabins and suites

Cabin choices abound on both cruise lines, but Norwegian is particularly innovative in this realm and, in some ways, Carnival is playing catch-up with its rival.

On the upper decks of several Norwegian ships is The Haven, akin to a boutique hotel located within the larger ship. Suite guests receive exclusive access to the gated complex, where they can escape the crowds elsewhere on the ship in their own private oasis with its own restaurant, lounge, pool and sundeck. The decor of the suites has a contemporary flair that matches the fancy surroundings. Haven passengers are, of course, free to roam the entire ship and enjoy all its attractions.

Another area where Norwegian gets particularly creative is in accommodations for travelers cruising solo . Studio cabins are designed for one, with mood lights and other features that make the inside accommodations seem more spacious than they are. The benefit here is single-occupancy pricing and a private lounge for socializing with other solo passengers.

Also on select ships are cabins specifically designed for families (near kids' play areas). The fleet's spa cabins are disappearing in 2024 to make room for more solo cabins.

Carnival tops Norwegian, and other competitors, with the largest standard cabins in the industry. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the line has taken a deep dive into suites on its latest ships, creating impressive accommodations with their own outdoor plunge pools, plus a private sundeck for suite guests.

Select ships have special Family Harbor cabins and suites that come with the benefit of a shared family lounge. Havana Suites are accommodations designed for sun-worshippers; these come with daytime access to a private pool area. Spa accommodations feature easy access to the spa and special amenities.

Food and drink

Carnival has long managed to have some of the tastiest food at sea, including extra-fee specialty dining venues. Favorites include JiJi's for authentic Asian cuisine and the various steakhouses for a date-night splurge.

You don't have to pay a cent extra for many of Carnival's mouthwatering restaurants. Decadent poolside burgers by Food Network star Guy Fieri are a particular passenger favorite, but you can also find complimentary tacos and burritos, as well as crispy crust pizza.

The Carnival chefs are not afraid of titillating tastebuds with flavor; if you like Indian cuisine, request it from your dining room waiter and you are in for a treat. On select ships, Carnival offers barbecue by Guy Fieri (free for lunch, extra cost for dinner) and pairs it with beer brewed right on board. Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee tout New Orleans bistros by Emeril Lagasse.

Fun bars also abound. At Carnival's Alchemy Bar, patrons fill out a prescription pad of their favorites, and bartenders "prescribe" a special concoction. On Mardi Gras, molecular drinks smoke and otherwise impress at The Fortune Teller bar, and Carnival Celebration features a menu of throwback drinks to celebrate the cruise line's 50th anniversary.

Norwegian's "Freestyle Cruising" dining concept skips giant main dining rooms with assigned tables and dining times in favor of multiple restaurants, where you can eat whenever you want. However, many of these eateries cost extra and require reservations. Foodies don't mind paying for the upgrade in meals; look for dining packages to keep costs in check.

Norwegian is all about giving its guests choices, and its newest ships boast more than two dozen dining options. Free eats include smaller dining rooms, pubs with grub and buffets, while splurges include steak, Asian, French and Brazilian venues. NCL's newest ships feature fan favorite Indulge Food Hall , with nearly a dozen food outlets serving a range of American and international dishes (most without an upcharge).

The line also shines when it comes to outdoor dining with views. Indoors, Skyy Ice Bars are a kitschy attraction for those who don't mind bundling in a parka to enjoy vodka on ice.

Kids activities

Both cruise lines have well-established drop-off kids programming that takes place in dedicated play areas and cool hangout spaces. Youth counselors lead age-appropriate activities such as arts and crafts, movies, and sports, or let kids veg out with video games and movies. (In the meantime, grownups can get a break from parenting and enjoy the spa or a drink by the pool.)

Carnival's Camp Ocean program caters to kids ages 2-11 (with an emphasis on marine-themed activities that are fun and educational), while Circle C and Club O2 are its cool clubs for tweens and teens, respectively. The line has partnered with Dr. Seuss to offer libraries of kids' books, story times and parades with the author's beloved characters, and a Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast, hosted by The Cat in The Hat, that's fun for all ages. (Breakfast does incur a nominal fee.)

Norwegian's Splash Academy keeps kids ages 5-12 happy with all the usual creative games and crafts, plus a Circus School. Teens ages 13-17 make friends at Entourage (on most ships), where they can play the latest video games, dance at evening parties or just chill out in comfy seating areas.

Onboard attractions

Would you rather race on a go-kart track or push turbo for a faster ride on a roller coaster? Those are the top attractions on the newest five ships of Norwegian and the three newest ships of Carnival, respectively. These active floating playgrounds offer supercharged indoor and outdoor activities for all ages.

In addition to BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea on Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee, Carnival has its WaterWorks water parks with exciting waterslides . Depending on the ship, you might also find outdoor ropes courses where you can walk a plank off the ship (while in a harness), an elevated recumbent bike you can pedal around a track, minigolf, Imax theaters and indoor trampoline parks.

Norwegian matches Carnival with a ropes course on select ships, complete with The Plank. It also goes hi-tech with its Galaxy Pavilion, full of virtual reality gaming and experiences. Look for Aqua Parks equipped with racing slides, full-size basketball courts, escape rooms, augmented reality laser tag, minigolf and bowling. The new 3,250-passenger Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva feature a first for the line — a pair of 10-story free-fall thrill slides.

Entertainment

Both lines excel in entertainment, though they take different approaches.

Norwegian Cruise Line signs Broadway and West End shows for slightly shortened shipboard productions, creates its own shows and searches around the world for interesting acts. You can catch productions of such popular shows as "Beetlejuice" and "Six," as well as the super-fun pub show "The Choir of Man" and Latin dance show "Burn the Floor."

Adults can pay extra for shows themed around wine or prohibition cocktails; kids aren't allowed because the fun comes with drinks. Comedy, improv and themed parties are all favorites of the late-night crowd.

Comedy is front and center in Carnival's entertainment lineup. The cruise line's Punchliner Comedy Clubs host more than 27,000 live performances a year, which makes Carnival the largest employer of comics in the world. It also wins the live music battle and puts together its own bands — whether jazz, rock 'n' roll, show band or classical.

You won't find Broadway here, but Carnival does create its own high-tech shows called Playlist Productions. These feature singers and dancers and familiar tunes but are purposely limited to 35- to 45-minute performances.

Both lines offer a roster of games and contests tied to popular TV shows. Carnival has shipboard versions of "Deal or No Deal" and "Family Feud," while Norwegian runs "Wheel of Fortune" and "The Price is Right" games (complete with prizes).

Carnival strives to offer affordable and fun cruises for everyone. The family-friendly ships are casual and carefree; the crowd is mostly American, with both couples and families on board. Carnival cruisers stay up late to take advantage of the casinos, dance clubs and late-night themed parties.
