What people love about gorilla trekking tours in rwanda.

I deliberately chose an inexpensive tour because my intention was to see animals rather than utilize luxury accommodations. I was not disappointed. The tour promised a number of items and never failed to deliver.
Great tour. When people ask me how my vacation was, I tell them we had a great time. Of course, seeing the gorillas and monkeys was great, the landscape was gorgeous, the Genocide Museum was eye-opening, but the best part was the people. We made friends with locals that we continue to keep in touch with. Our guide, Ronald, was awesome. Ronald was accommodating, easy-going and friendly. I would recommend this tour and, even if you don't choose this tour, I would highly recommend visiting Rwanda. It was an unforgettable and powerful experience.
Ok,in terms of the services and accommodations provided to us,excellent to say the least, the people in charge of us were also a merry bunch,I represent a group of 4-2 couples, each one of us had a lot to say,but we all agree that Rwanda is an amazing country.its forests are unlike any thing we have ever seen considering we've gone on 3 safaris, unlike the serengeti and the Savannah,it offers a fresh percpective of Africa,it's lush green full of magestic trees and the wildlife is definitely different,a wide range of primates you won't see anywhere else, birds ar also in plenty,if you enjoy such kids of stuff, you'll have a blast.

"I went on a G Adventures trip to Africa this past December. No complaints regarding the trip. I found out, however, that the company charged me 25% more than other passengers -- if you go on a trip and are American, DO NOT book through the US web site. They charge different pricing for people from other countries. People from the US are asked to pay about 25% more than Canadians or Europeans. Disappointing and unethical, discriminatory practice to say the least.

rwanda gorilla tours from south africa

Author: Alice Lombard - 9 May 2024

So, you want to venture into the heart of Rwanda’s lush forests to encounter the majestic mountain gorillas? Planning a comprehensive gorilla trekking safari to this East African country, complemented by visits to various landmarks and accommodations, involves several key stages.

Our guide offers expert tips on where to go, what you need to know about costs, where to stay, top attractions, what to expect weatherwise, and how your trip positively impacts the ‘gorillas in the mist trekking legacy of this wildlife destination renowned for the conservation and protection of its primate species.

Let’s break down this exciting journey in detail to ensure you get the most out of your gorilla trekking safari, ensuring it is as awe-inspiring and seamless as the landscapes you’ll explore.

Arrival in Kigali

Your adventure begins in Kigali, the vibrant capital of Rwanda. In terms of size and the transformative nature of its economy and urban development, Kigali can be compared to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Both cities have a population of approximately 300,000 to 350,000 residents within their city limits. Like Pittsburgh, which transitioned from a heavy industrial base to a center for technology, education, and healthcare, Kigali has undergone significant transformation over recent decades.

It has evolved from a city with historical challenges to a modern capital noted for its cleanliness, safety, and investment in information and communication technologies.

  • Cultural Hub : The city hosts the  Kigali Genocide Memorial , an important site dedicated to the memory of the victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. This memorial provides profound insights into Rwanda’s history and promotes peace and reconciliation.
  • Eco-conscious Capital : Kigali was one of the first cities in  Africa to ban plastic bags, setting a precedent for waste management and sustainability efforts continent-wide.
  • Hotel Rwanda Inspiration:  Kigali is home to the historic  Hôtel des Mille Collines,  which famously served as the inspiration for the  Oscar-nominated film documenting the genocide against the Tutsi in  Rwanda in  the spring of 1994.

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Make your way to the breathtaking Volcanoes National Park, home to the majestic mountain gorillas. By choosing the  Virunga Lodge  as your base, you position yourself perfectly for an early morning departure on your gorilla trekking adventure. This profound journey into the wilderness allows you to spend an hour closely observing a habituated gorilla family in their lush natural habitat. Accompanied by expert trackers, you’ll gain unparalleled insights into these incredible primates’ daily lives and behaviors.

  • Diverse Volcanic Landscape : Part of the Virunga Mountains comprises six extinct and three active volcanoes. This unique geological formation spans across three countries: Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • Conservation Legacy : Established in 1925 as Africa’s first national park to protect mountain gorillas, it gained fame through the conservation efforts of Dian Fossey, significantly raising global awareness for gorilla protection.

Chimpanzee Encounter in Nyungwe Forest

For those seeking a broader primate experience, you can also see  golden monkeys  right within Volcanoes National Park, or consider combining this with chimpanzee trekking in  Nyungwe Forest National Park . Trekking in Nyungwe can be challenging but rewarding, with a rich array of flora and fauna and the chance to spend an hour with a chimpanzee family.

  • Biodiversity Hotspot : Nyungwe, one of Africa’s oldest rainforests, is a treasure trove of biodiversity with over 1,000 plants, 85 mammals, and 300 bird species. It is a vital sanctuary for endangered chimpanzees and hosts possibly Africa’s  largest  troops of  L’Hoest’s monkeys  and  Rwenzori colobus .
  • Canopy Walkway : One of Nyungwe’s most thrilling attractions is the Canopy Walkway.  Suspended 60 metres above the forest floor , this 200-metre long bridge offers visitors a unique perspective of the forest’s uppermost layers.  This  is one of the first canopy walkways in Africa, providing a stunning and exhilarating experience of walking above a vast and ancient forest.

Cruise on Lake Kivu

Following your trek, continue your exploration of Rwanda by heading to the tranquil waters of Lake Kivu. Here, you’ll embark on the luxury vessel  Mantis Kivu Queen uBuranga , a distinctive floating hotel that offers a 2-night itinerary sailing from Gisenyi to Nyamasheke. As you cruise, immerse yourself in the breathtaking scenery that surrounds one of Africa’s Great Lakes. This journey provides a peaceful transition from your trek and allows you to enjoy world-class onboard amenities and engage in activities like kayaking and cultural village visits.

  • Cultural and Economic Hub : The shores of Lake Kivu are dotted with several resort towns, such as Gisenyi, Kibuye, and Cyangugu, which are essential for both local culture and the economy. These towns are popular with tourists for their beautiful beaches, relaxing atmosphere, and the opportunity to engage in water sports and other recreational activities.
  • Scenic Beauty : The lake offers stunning views of the surrounding hills and the distant Virunga volcanoes, providing a picturesque setting perfect for relaxation and photography.

Gorilla Trekking Safari Costs and Permits: Plan your budget

The cost of a Rwanda Gorilla Trekking safari typically includes accommodations, permits for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, meals, and transportation.

Gorilla permits are $1,500 per person , crucial for conservation efforts and supporting local communities.

Generally, prices start from about $1,500 per person per day, covering accommodation, permits, guides, transportation, and most meals. Luxury packages can cost significantly more, offering premium lodging and additional amenities.

Conservation and Community

A significant portion of your Gorilla Trekking fees contributes to wildlife conservation and supports local communities , ensuring sustainable tourism practices are upheld. Here are two pertinent facts to consider as you plan your gorilla trekking safari in Rwanda:

  • Successful Conservation Efforts : Thanks to concerted conservation efforts, including strict protection policies and community engagement, the population of mountain gorillas has increased from about 620 in 1989 to over 1,000 today, making them the only great ape species experiencing a population increase.
  • Community Benefits : About 10% of the revenue from gorilla trekking permits is allocated directly to local communities. This funding supports infrastructure projects such as schools, clinics, and clean water initiatives, helping to improve the quality of life for those living near gorilla habitats.

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is organized in small, intimate groups:

  • Standard Trekking Groups : Each group consists of up to 8 trekkers and is guided by experienced trackers and guides. These groups visit one of several habituated gorilla families.
  • Exclusive Private Treks : For a higher fee, private treks offer a more personalized experience with your own guide and trackers.

A gorilla trek in Rwanda is more than just a safari; it’s an immersive journey into the world of one of our closest animal relatives, set against the backdrop of Rwanda’s stunning landscapes. Your trek will be exhilarating and profoundly enriching through thoughtful preparation and respectful engagement, contributing positively to the conservation and community upliftment.

Best Places for Gorilla Trekking

Uganda gorillas.

Gorilla Safaris in Uganda take you to Mgahinga and Bwindi national park in Uganda. Bwindi has the highest number of mountain gorillas (45% of the overall population). Gorilla trekking in Uganda stands out because she has many gorilla groups available for tracking. It is only in Uganda where tourists can spend 4 hours with gorillas in what is known as the gorilla habituation experience.

Rwanda Gorillas

Gorilla tours in Rwanda are also popular because the Volcanoes National Park is very close to capital Kigali. There is also this belief that gorilla safaris in Rwanda offer easier treks to the gorillas compared to other national parks. What makes gorilla tours in Congo special is the fact that Congo is the only country where tourists can see both mountain gorillas and Eastern lowland gorillas.

Congo Gorillas

Mountain gorillas can be seen in Virunga National Park while Lowland gorilla tours are organized in Kahuzi Biega National Park. Gorilla permits in Congo cost $400 making a gorilla safari in Congo cheaper than in Uganda or Congo. If you are interested in a Western lowland gorilla safari, then you need to consider other countries in Central and West Africa. Western lowland gorilla trekking is a more difficult undertaking because they live in vast and remote tropical forests.

FAQS About Gorilla Trekking

Mountain gorilla trekking is one of the most popular safaris in Africa. It involves guided treks in African jungles for a chance to encounter a creature that closely resembles humans.

How long is the trek to the gorillas?

It is often the loud grunt of the mighty silverback that is first heard even before you see any of the group members. Take you time to observe the group during the one hour assigned. You will watch the family feeding, siblings grooming, juveniles playing, mothers breastfeeding and the silverback always on the lookout.

Gorillas are very gentile primates compared to chimpanzees or many of the other smaller primates. The silverback has complete control of the group and leads with charisma not force unless it is required. He ensures that all members of the groups are in line and accommodate each other. If there is any threat from the outside, the silverback will deal with it. Although gorillas are gentile, it is important to follow the gorilla trekking rules at all time. Always follow instructions from the park guides. Never get to close to the gorilla group and ensure that you never appear to surround them.

When is the best time for gorilla trekking?

Gorilla trekking is carried out throughout the year regardless of whether it rains or not. Gorilla tours occur even on public holidays. The only time when the activity is stopped or suspended is if the there is a security concern or a natural occurrence that requires closure of the park.

Treks to see gorillas last between 30 minutes to 7 hours depending on the location of the gorilla group you are assigned. The exercise begins with a briefing from the park rangers and guides. After the briefing, groups consisting of 8 individuals each are assigned a particular gorilla group depending on overall fitness, age and preference. Each group heads out to different directions in search of a particular gorilla family.

The rangers always know the exact location of each gorilla group as a team is sent out into the jungle to locate the primates based on where they were last sighted the previous evening. This advance team is in constant communication with your team leader and lets him/her know which route to follow in order to find the primates.

Mountain Gorilla

Nomad Tours specializes in gorilla tours, taking our guests to the beautiful mountains of Uganda or Rwanda to see these majestic giants in their natural habitats. These creatures are extremely endangered – there are approximately only 600 left worldwide – and they are incredibly difficult to get to; making seeing the mountain gorillas a real once in a lifetime opportunity. Observing these endangered animals in their natural environment is humbling and extremely rewarding as they’ll enlighten you to how simply life could be.

After Chimpanzees, mountain gorillas are the most closely related to human beings of all mammals; our DNA is a 99% match. They are an endangered species, despite intense conservation efforts and community development which aims to protect them. If these efforts are lost, in just a few generations, mountain gorillas will be extinct or will only be able to be seen in zoo’s and sanctuaries. By visiting the gorillas we’re aiding the communities which surround them and showing them that protecting the gorillas will benefit them financially.

Nomad Tours will take you to see these beautiful endangered animals for yourselves. Our Masai Mara and Gorilla tour will take you through Kenya and Uganda in just two weeks, showing you the stunning landscapes and exotic wildlife that is unique to these regions and Africa. As permits allowing you to visit the gorillas are limited, Nomad Tours may either take you to visit the gorillas through the Uganda or Rwanda side. We prefer to take guests through the Uganda side and will do our utmost best to ensure a pass into the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to see the mountain gorillas. The money that is spent on the permits needed to see the gorillas goes towards protecting them.

Humans are less likely to harm the primates if they understand the benefit of gorilla trekking to their communities . You might want to see our 3 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari package.

In countries were mountain gorilla trekking is possible, gorilla tourism is far more valuable - Most visitors to East Africa come to see wild gorillas alongside other activities like golden monkey trekking, birding, mountain hiking, chimpanzee trekking or visiting the grave of Dian Fossey . We are also including cultural visits like visiting the Iby'iwacu cultural village and the Batwa among others during a Rwanda or Uganda safari . Gorilla safari in Rwanda and Uganda – The best time to visit for gorilla trekking

Because of their location around the equator, the climate conditions in Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo allow Wildlife Safaris to be done throughout the year. However the best time to visit Uganda and other East African counties on a safari is during the drier seasons (January, February, March, June, July, August and September). During the drier months, the park roads are free of mud and the animals gather at specific waterholes to drink making it easy to spot them. Gorilla trekking in Africa is best done during the dry season to avoid the slippery trails typical of rainy seasons. Unfortunately the hotel rates are higher and permits for silverback gorilla tours in Africa need to be booked in advance. You might want to see our 1 Day Rwanda Gorilla Safari package.

The wet season (March to May and October to September) has its advantages especially if you are eyeing Gorilla Tours. There are fewer visitors in the park making for a more personal and private safari especially for wildlife photographers, researchers and those doing sport fishing in Uganda . Some hotels reduce their rates because there are few tourists. Birders will find the wet season amazing for birding. It is the breeding season and birds are everywhere. Migratory birds come to East Africa to escape the heat elsewhere and take advantage of the fresh fruits and insects. If you are interested in hiking check our our 3 Days Nyiragongo hike tour and the 1 Day Bisoke volcano hike . You might also be interested in more information about hiking mount Rwenzori in Uganda.

Our staff know the latest developments (socially, economically and politically) in the country which is important for your own safety and adventure. African ownership ensures that more locals are given employment opportunities. By booking with us, you are ensuring that your money helps empower and support the local African people. The tourism industry relies on trust between the company and clients. A tour company is only as good as the quality of its field Guides/Drivers. We rely on our staff to demonstrate the values of honesty and integrity while dealing with our clients. Because Guides are our ambassadors in the field, we try to work with the very best. By best we mean Drivers who have prior experience dealing with international Tourists. Our Guides are very professional, experienced, knowledgeable and passionate about their job. They are ready to share information about the places you visit and will take you to discover places that may not have been included in your itinerary. Talking about itineraries, check out our 3 Days lowland Gorilla Tour .

The office team is comprised of individuals who are well traveled and are in position to know what is best for you. We invest a considerable part of our resources on our office staff, Drivers, tour vehicles and other equipment. Our Guides are trained in defensive driving and we use a fleet of 4X4 Safari vans that are comfortable, in great condition and customized for the rough terrain in the African countryside. The privacy of our clients is ensured by assigning vehicles that are spacious, safe and reliable. We also limit the number of visitors to ensure comfort and privacy.

Guide to Organising Gorilla Tours from South Africa

Home » Uganda Gorilla Tours » Guide to Organising Gorilla Tours from South Africa

seeing gorillas in Bwindi from south Africa

Many African nationals ask what is required to go on a Gorilla trek from their mother countries and more so, South Africans keep wondering what it takes to organize gorilla tours from South Africa! This should not be difficult; South Africa is a well established and widely known destination for an African safari because of it’s infrastructure and wildlife numbers especially in Kruger National Park.

However, Gorilla trekking has come to the fore for many wildlife enthusiasts and safari lovers all over the world and it is top on the list of things to do in Africa among other primate adventures including Chimpanzee tracking and Golden monkey trekking which also rank highly after the Gorillas.

As such, both South Africans and foreign visitors to its parks find the need to organize gorilla tours from South Africa since there are no Gorillas in South Africa and Gorilla trekking takes place only in 3 East African countries of Uganda, Rwanda and Congo (DRC).

You need to first decide where to go for your Gorilla trek and this can be determined by the price of the permit, travel distances, flight costs, security and the required fitness levels among other factors. The cost of the permit for trekking in Uganda is $700 for both Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga National Park and Uganda possesses the highest number of mountain Gorillas in the world with more than half in Bwindi.

The Gorilla permit in Rwanda costs $1,500 and $400 in Congo but trekking there is currently indefinitely suspended. You can however visit the lowland Gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park also at $400 each permit.

Apart from the difference in Gorilla permit prices, both Uganda and Rwanda are excellent destinations for Mountain Gorilla trekking. Both safe and secure with well-developed infrastructure in terms of roads and accommodation facilities. Uganda however has the friendliest people on the continent with a good command of the English language as well.

There are different carriers flying out of South Africa to Rwanda and Uganda including Uganda Airlines, RwandAir, Kenya Airways & South African Airways but direct flights to Kigali tend to be more expensive than flights to Entebbe.

The driving distance from Entebbe to Bwindi however is 8 hours and 9 hours to Mgahinga National Park as compared 3 hours from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and 5 hours to Virunga in Congo.

But it is also possible to do Gorilla trekking in Uganda while flying in and out of Kigali because the driving distance between Kigali and Bwindi or Mgahinga is 4 hours. So, you can either fly from South Africa to Entebbe, drive to Bwindi and fly out of Kigali instead of returning to Entebbe or vice-versa OR, Fly into Kigali, crossover to Bwindi or Mgahinga for your trek and drop off back in Kigali.

There are also scheduled daily domestic flights from Entebbe to Kisoro airstrip for Mgahinga National Park and the southern parts of Bwindi as well as Kihihi airstrip for the Northern parts of Bwindi to ease on the long driving hours.

There are South African companies which offer Gorilla trekking packages but the best way to oragnise gorilla tours from South Africa is to contact a local company like us at Gorilla Holidays and we will work with you to achieve your dream Gorilla trek.

We have firsthand knowledge of the destinations and local expertise to advise on what’s best for you and we have worked with many South Africans in recent past coming for Gorilla treks in Rwanda because of the discounted Gorilla permits offer which was luckily, extended up to December 2023.

We continue to offer affordable options for individuals, families and small groups giving personalized attention and delivering uniquely satisfying Gorilla trekking experiences, wildlife tours, cultural and primate adventures in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo.
