AIRBUS FACTORY TOUR (Toulouse) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

The aeroscopia Toulouse – the Airbus Museum

Coming to Toulouse automatically means being around Airbuses. You already get to see the first Airbus machines that are waiting to be delivered when you arrive at the airport.

Our plan was to participate in a guided tour through the Airbus factories whilst in Toulouse but as it turns out that needs to be arranged earlier than two weeks in advance. All that was left when we tried to book were two open spots in a French tour. But with our minimal knowledge of that language a guided tour in French wouldn’t have made much sense. Instead, we visited the aeroscopia Toulouse, an Airbus museum.

The aeroscopia Toulouse – the Airbus Museum

We took the tram all the way to its terminus. Some few signposts guided us through a park, over a bridge across a motorway and then finally to the gates of the aeroscopia Museum. I have to admit that I thought we were lost more than once. The streets were empty, it was foggy on the day and in general, this didn’t look like a well-frequented path to a museum. I can understand why some TripAdvisor reviews complain about the accessibility of the museum. But at the end of the day, every trip needs a little adventure, even if that adventure is the walk from the tram to the museum.

Museum aeroscopia

Before even entering the museum visitors get to see the first aeroplanes: A Concorde and an A 400M.

The aeroscopia Toulouse – the Airbus Museum - A400

The Museum aeroscopia is in an old hangar. It is difficult to maintain a warm temperature in a massive hall like that so do dress accordingly. The museum shop sells miniature aeroplane models, prints and Airbus themed items. There is no restaurant in the museum but there is a vending machine for drinks.

On the lower level of the hangar, they show many Airbus aeroplane models of their commercial aeroplanes and their military aeroplanes. That gives visitors a good understanding of the Airbus range.

The aeroscopia Toulouse – the Airbus Museum

First, we walked into an opened fuselage of an Airbus Super Guppy. This massive cargo plane looked so small in the huge hall but once we stood inside we became aware of its enormous size. Makes sense, this cargo plane transports parts of other aeroplanes and those aren’t exactly small.

Next, we stepped inside a Concorde.

The aeroscopia Toulouse – the Airbus Museum

This slim machine transported passengers from Paris or London to New York at supersonic speed between 1976 and 2003. Travel time was around 3.5h and with that about 50% shorter than with a normal aeroplane. The route was discontinued after one of the Concordes crushed down in 2000. After the necessary permits to fly were withdrawn, the machines had to be reworked before they were licenced to fly again in 2001. By that time passengers seemed to have lost interest in the supersonic flights and when additional security issues surfaced the Concorde routes were discontinued for good.

inside the concorde

When I stepped into the passenger cabin and saw the comfy armchairs I wished for these times to return. Thinking how crammed and uncomfortable it is in today’s aeroplanes made me aware of what a luxury this must have been. 128 passengers fit into the Concorde. This was later reduced to only 100. Tickets for the Concorde were around 20% more expensive than on a comparable route but here, food was still served on porcelain plates whilst the passengers were sipping their Champaign.

This aeroplane was impressive and I am somewhat sad to have never flown with it.

Concorde The aeroscopia Toulouse – the Airbus Museum

Airbus A300B

There is one more aeroplane that visitors can step inside and that is the Airbus A300B. Aeroplane manufacturer Airbus created the first twin-engine jumbo jet and the final montage of this A300 happened in Toulouse. The first flight of the prototype was in October 1972. Over 560 aeroplanes of that type were assembled before its production stopped in 2007.

The aeroscopia Toulouse – the Airbus Museum

Airbus had several different models of the A300 on the market that differed in their length or in the number of emergency exits. We saw one of these planes in the Museum aeroscopia. I was impressed by the cockpit, the technical equipment that was on display and also the different kinds of interiors in the different areas of the plane.

A300 airbus Museum

The normal chairs in the “cattle class” were vastly different from the business class, the onboard meeting rooms or the double bed spaces with ensuite bathrooms and fully equipped kitchen. Paying customers could have it all.

A300 Buissenes class

What else is on display?

Many other small and big aeroplanes are on display in the Museum aeroscopic. There are military aeroplanes and test productions of aeroplanes and everything in between. I was excited about how different all these types of planes look. And have you ever had the chance to stand directly in front of the tip of an aeroplane? Sometimes the front of an aeroplane looks like a smiling face. There is so much to experience here and even for people that aren’t exactly aeroplane enthusiasts it’s still very worthwhile.

AIRBUS FACTORY TOUR (Toulouse) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

Simple Flying

What is it like to visit the airbus factory in toulouse.

Earlier this week, Simple Flying was invited to attend the Hi Fly hand-over ceremony for their new Airbus A330neo at the Airbus factory in Toulouse. But what is it actually like to go to the factory and what does the ceremony entail? Read on to find out.

The arrival

After arriving in Toulouse, media was collated together and given a briefing on how the visit would go. Media were instructed that whilst we could take photos and films of everything during the visit, we could not film aircraft that had yet to be delivered to their clients. So for example, if a shiny Airbus A350 in British Airways livery was to roll around the corner on a test flight (and believe me there was plenty of fan favorites seen on the day), we were not allowed to film it.

As it turns out, media being allowed to take photos of planes, or even go onboard planes, was subject to the airlines themselves, not Airbus. Simple Flying was here at the factory at the pleasure of Hi Fly.

We then proceeded to get security badges (an instant collectible item) and taken to the media and press room.

First press event

The first event was started by the head of marketing for the A330neo, who talked us through the Airbus design philosophy and why the A330neo was such a fantastic aircraft.

"What we are looking to have is a perfect portfolio of aircraft that can suit any customers needs"

The A330neo is designed to be the replacement aircraft for the A330 series, as well as those airlines with aging 777 aircraft and the Boeing 767. It has the advantage of having 99% commonality with the A330ceo range so pilots don't have to retrain. There are two variants, the smaller A330neo-800 and the bigger and much better selling A330neo-900.

On the poor sales of the A330neo-800, Airbus had this to say:

"What is interesting is that we thought that the A330-200 would sell significantly less than the A330-300, and when we launched it we had quite a big success. We will follow that success [with the A330neo-800] but that current fleet [of A330-200s to replace] is only around 10 years old, people are not looking to replace it yet"

"There is also a significant second-hand market [of A330s] as well" he added

Introduction to Hi Fly

After Airbus spoke to the press, Hi Fly President Paulo Mirpuri spoke to the press about the new aircraft.

“The acquisition of the A330neo aircraft is a significant step forward for Hi Fly. We are in the vanguard of those who have taken delivery of the new aircraft and we are happy to be able to offer these latest airliners to our customers. Also, the addition of the A330neo to the Hi Fly Fleet leaves us operating the youngest, cleanest fleet in our history.”

He also took questions, the first about the choice in livery (trying to find a balance between looking like a corporate jet and an airline, a mix of their customers). An additional question was about the future of the A380 in their fleet ( which you can read here ).

The ceremony

After the press event, we were lead to the main hall to witness the handover of the 'keys' of the aircraft. There were four short speeches from Airbus, Air Lease Corporation (ALC, who funded and own the aircraft they are leasing to Hi Fly), Hi Fly and Rolls Royce.

"We were the launch customer of the A330neo-900 at the Farnborough Air Show, and this A330neo represents the seventh delivery from that order stream" spoke ALC at the ceremony "That is a real testament to the A330neo-900, that the first airplane that ALC is delivering to Hi Fly is a new aircraft. For an operator like Hi Fly who leases to other airlines, to be convinced in the economics in the airplane to the extent that they will take a new aircraft ... its truly remarkable."

A film was played that showed the creation of the A330neo and its journey into the hands of Hi Fly. You can watch it below (It's a great video and well worth your time).

Gifts were exchanged, and then the whole party retired for a long lunch (one of the perks of covering an event like this).

The aircraft visit

Following lunch, the entire group was transported in a fleet of cars across Toulouse to the Airbus Aircraft Delivery Center. This vast semicircle single aircraft terminal felt like the fanciest private airport you could imagine. They had big banners of the Hi Fly logo handing from the ceiling and a long red carpet.

After witnessing the plane itself sitting at the gate, the press was finally invited inside and given a tour of the aircraft. For our actual thoughts of what the aircraft was like, check out our review here .

Lastly, we were given a small goodie bag to remember our trip.

What do you think? Do you want to come along next time with Simple Flying? Let us know in the comments.

Airbus delivers first active antenna of the spainsat ng-i satellite.

SpainSat-NG-DRA-Tx-on-satellite-Copyright-Airbus

Acceptance testing of the active transmit antenna for Hisdesat's SpainSat NG-I satellite has been successfully completed following the final radiation pattern tests. The antenna is now being integrated onto the satellite at the Airbus facilities in Toulouse, France. Once integrated, the antenna and satellite will undergo thermal vacuum tests (TVAC) and then vibration tests.

The two SPAINSAT NG satellites of Hisdesat include a highly advanced, fully flexible X-band payload, which employs active antennas with in-orbit reconfiguration capability, an integrated digital processor that will interconnect the X- and Ka-band payloads for cross-banding, and a dedicated high-speed service link that enables rapid reconfiguration.

The acceptance test campaign for the active receive antenna has also started at Airbus’ Getafe site in Madrid, and the antenna will be ready for delivery at the end of the summer. The first satellite is scheduled to enter into service in 2025, providing coverage across Europe, Africa and the Americas from geostationary orbit.

Development of the active antennas presented unique challenges, which have been successfully overcome thanks to the design and manufacturing methodology and an efficient validation logic. The acceptance campaign demonstrated the high performance of the active antenna, far superior to other equivalent systems on the market. The functional tests allowed the precise characterisation of fundamental parameters such as maximum radiated power in dual polarisation, exceptional precision in the control of the radiation pattern of each of its 16 beams, as well as high spectral purity and linearity, fundamental parameters for optimising the service and flexibility of SpainSat NG’s operation.

The industrial challenges associated with the production of the next-generation active antenna system for the SPAINSAT NG programme are significant, and represent a major leap in complexity and volume compared to previous generations. The collaboration between Airbus and its industrial partners has enabled these challenges to be overcome and position both Airbus Space Systems in Spain and the national supply chain as an international reference for this type of product.

The development and integration of innovative satellite payload elements, such as the reconfigurable active transmit and receive X-band antennas and the deployable pallet of individually steerable Ka-band antennas, were supported by the ESA PACIS 3 partnership project.

The integration of the antennas for the second SpainSat NG-II satellite has also started, with delivery expected early in 2025.
