Sustainable travel expert, adventure seeker
Laurel, MD, USA
Community and Blackness go hand-in-hand. Simply put, it’s not easy living in a world where your culture is constantly appropriated and commodified without credit. As a response, we’ve collectively begun carving out spaces of boldness and Blackness designed by us, for us. While joining Black travel groups and following inspiring Black travel bloggers bring us together, there’s nothing quite like a party. From groovy music festivals in Paris to art and fashion in the heart of Ghana, here are 10 of our favorite festivals for Black travelers around the globe.
Afronation 2023
Afronation 2023: Jun 28, 2023 to Jun 30, 2023
Afronation is a collection of music festivals centered around beach locales and African music. The festival that seems to have emerged out of nowhere has become a big deal. In Portugal, Puerto Rico, and Ghana, Afronation attracts Black travelers that flock to the beach festival to witness their favorite Afrobeat, Hip Hop, and Reggae artists like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and French Montana.
In the Algarve region of Portugal, the festival takes place on Praia da Rocha, one of Portugal’s most popular beaches. Imagine oceanside beach parties surrounded while your favorite artists play live in the background. Last year, the beach festival popped up in West Africa for the first time with its Ghana edition. The festival cofounders, Smade and Obi Asika, say the festival was born out of the need for opportunities for Afrobeats artists and to unify the African diaspora.
Yam Carnival 2023
YAM Carnival 2023: August 2023 (dates TBA)
YAM Carnival is new to the festival scene, but they’re already making huge waves. The organizers from AfroNation are behind this one too, but aim to make the experience completely immersive. Beyond music, the celebration will bring together African cultures from around the world–think Curry and Jerk from the Caribbean, a Latin American pop up inspired by Brazil, New Orleans creole cuisine, and a continental African experience served from a makeshift Nigerian danfo bus.
For another twist on the traditional music festival, YAM promises masquerade performances honoring the centuries-old indigenous traditions of the Yoruba people of Western Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. On the music front, YAM’s lineup has included well-loved Afrobeat artists like Davido, WizKid, and Mr.Eazi.

Afropunk 2023
Afropunk 2022: Dates TBA
If there was an OG of Black music festivals, it’d be Afropunk . What started as a safe space for Black alternative folks to express themselves through music and fashion has grown into a full-blown movement. From New York to Paris, Afropunk is a traveling festival, community, and outlet of creative expression for many. The stages of Afropunk feature Black artists across musical genres, from Solange to Lizzo.
Each year, AFROPUNK has a different theme. This year in Minneapolis, get ready for a weekend-long Juneteenth event , with focuses on Midwestern music history and celebrations of Black history and joy. The best part about going to Afropunk is witnessing the fashion. Fros are in full bloom, African wax print clothing is abundant, and no one is afraid to accessorize.
Essence Festival 2023
Essence Festival 2023: June 39th- July 3rd, 2023
For over 25 years, Essence Festival has been taking New Orleans by storm each 4th of July weekend. In 1995, the first festival popped up in the Crescent City. Dubbed as the ‘party with a purpose,’ Essence has long been instrumental in bringing millions of dollars to the city’s economy and creating a conjure of Black culture through music, food, and travel.
When Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2004, the Essence Fest team was on the ground providing aid and helping to rebuild the city. 2004 was the only year that the festival was held outside of Louisiana (it moved to Houston temporarily). Each year, festival goers are invited to celebrate Black culture with performances from artists like Janet Jackson and Beyonce. When concerts aren’t happening, the community gathers at the convention center for celebrity panels, demos, and giveaways from brands like Shea Moisture. At Essence Fest, there is absolutely no shortage of love, pride, or “Sis, you look good” compliments.
Something In The Water 2023
Something In The Water 2023: April 28th – April 30th, 2023
What began in 2019 by the musical icon and Virginia native, Pharrell, continues to grow into one of the coolest Black music festivals on the East Coast. Something In The Water is a mashup of hip hop culture from the West, East, and South of the US. This year, the festival heads to Washington D.C. to celebrate Juneteenth .
While the musical part of the experience is held on Independence Ave, Pharell has curated extended programming throughout the week across the city. From the pop-up church service to culinary demonstrations, Something In The Water is more than just music.
CurlFest 2023
Curlfest 2023: TBA

Owned and operated by four Black women, The Curly Collective is on a mission to uplift and empower Black women and girls while redefining what the world’s standards of beauty look like. Every year, the festival takes over Randall’s Island Park in New York for a full day of beauty, music, food, and Black culture.
Brands that are well-loved in the natural hair community, like DevaCurl and Creme of Nature, set up interactive booths featuring on-the-spot braid bars, photo booths, and onsite shopping experiences. Art lovers can watch paintings come to life at CurlFest’s Arts District. There’s truly something for everyone at CurlFest making it feel more like a family reunion than a festival.
ODUNDE Festival 2023
ODUNDE Festival 2023: June 11th, 2023

The enormous fest, which first kicked off in 1975, takes over a dozen-block radius in the Graduate Hospital neighborhood, gathering hundreds of vendors from around the world.
One Music Festival 2023
One Music Festival 2023: October 28th – 29th, 2023
Often referred to as the music capital of America, and most certainly of hip hop, Atlanta’s One Music Festival should be on your list. For 10 years, the festival has been bridging the gap between old and new. Past lineups have included the likes of Wu-Tang Clan and Musiq Soulchild alongside Gucci Mane and Summer Walker. The one-day event held in Centennial Park is also loved for its live art installations and extensive food truck village. In 2019, Slutty Vegan, a popular Black-owned vegan restaurant in Atlanta was on-site at the festival.
As travelers, it’s important to support local festivals just as much as we do global ones. One Music Fest is the largest festival in the Southeast and directly pumps money into the local economy. Over 25 Atlanta-based vendors are featured annually at the event, with many of them being Black owned so travelers can feel good knowing they’re supporting local Black businesses.
American Black Film Festival 2023
American Black Film Festival 2023: June 14th – 18th, 2023
The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) is an annual fest dedicated to showcasing Black talent and featuring film and television content by and about people of African descent. Chale Wote Street Art Festival 2023
Chale Wote Street Art Festival 2023: August 21st – 27th, 2023
During a recent trip to Ghana, I asked my Ghanaian friends about the best time to visit again, they all pointed to Chale Wote Street Art Festival , an art festival held every August in Accra. Since 2011, Chale Wote has been bringing some of the world’s best Black artists to Ghana for a celebration of art appreciation in the form of an open-air street gallery.
From live paintings to spoken word, no art form is left unexplored. What started as a one-day event has lovingly evolved into a week-long festival with spaces like the Nubuke Foundation and Jamestown’s High Street being the epicenter of the festival’s culture.
Dak’Art 2023
Dak’Art 2023: Dates TBA
Since 1990, Dak’Art has been a platform for contemporary art rooted in African culture. The biennale festival brings together the best of local artists and those across the continent. Created to act as a window into African literature and culture, the festival has since grown into a full exhibition of Black artistic excellence.
From photojournalism to sound and exploring everything from decolonization to pan-Africanism, no medium is left untouched. Not only is the festival supported by the Senegalese government, but it has also drawn audiences from far and wide in recent years and is now considered the World Festival of Black Arts.
Afrochella 2023
Afrochella 2023: Cancelled
Afrochella announced at the end of their 2022 festival that they would not be returning to Ghana for 2023. “This is the last Afrochella,” co-founder Abdul Abdullah told fest-goers at the El-Wak stadium in Accra.

Top 10 Destinations For Black Women Travelers For 2023 & 2024
The perfect travel destinations for the black woman.
Are you a traveling black woman seeking friendly countries to travel to? Well, if you are, know that traveling while being a black woman is different. Your outlook will draw attention in several places around the world. In addition, one of the biggest concerns that black women travelers have when traveling globally is safety, and it's no surprise that they may be reluctant to book a flight for themselves to spend quality time.
With six months of the year passing by already, you may want to keep an eye on the top destinations for black women travelers so you can plan your future travel. In recent years, traveling has become more of a black American leisure activity. So, look no further than this guide, whether you want to travel alone or in a group to your dream destinations.
Here are the top ten places to visit in 2023 & 2024 for black women travelers. You should at least visit them once in a lifetime, and they are a must to have on your travel bucket list.
1. Accra, Ghana
Accra, Ghana's capital and largest city, is located on the Gulf of Guinea. Ghana began inviting people of African descent to visit by promising convenient visa applications and a year-long calendar of culturally immersive events. Since many people have returned to Ghana to reconnect with their ancestors, there hasn’t been a better time for black women to visit.
Accra's must-see attractions include Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Labadi Beach, Black Star Gate, and Artists Alliance Gallery. You must visit Accra once if you are a black woman traveler.
2. South Africa
South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is an excellent first-time safari destination. There's Golden Savannah, Great Gaping Gorges, hauntingly beautiful deserts, and a breathtaking cast of African creatures.
South Africa appears to have all of the hallmarks of a great vacation destination: sun, sand, safari, and mountains. However, if you dig a little deeper, you'll discover that it also has spirit. South Africa's painful apartheid history is especially relevant to African-American travelers, and the cultural revival in places like Johannesburg's Maboneng district is a sight to behold.
"The body of America and the soul of Africa" is a no-brainer for Black women. Brazil has one of the largest African populations, with Nigerians leading the charts. There is much to learn from how this place blended African and Portuguese traditions.
Black women travelers can take full advantage of and immerse themselves in a rich and accessible art community. It should be on the wish list of all travelers, whether black women travelers or otherwise. It's especially good to know you'll be greeted warmly if you arrive solo!
"L'Hexagone" is the name the French gave their beloved homeland because of its distinctive six-sided shape. Each region of France has its distinct personality. There is no better country to practice self-care than France.
From the beaches of the Riviera to the cafes of Paris, there is no better place to luxuriate yourself. Whether you want to go castle hopping in the Loire Valley, take a wine-tasting class in Bordeaux, or get swept up in the romance of the cultural Alsace region, France is the place to relax, unwind, and find your true self.
For first-time visitors to the Middle East, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are cosmopolitan destinations that serve as outstanding intros. They offer magnificence, luxury, and distinct culture. Dubai is well-known for modern tourist attractions such as the Burj Khalifa (the world's tallest building) and shopping malls with massive terrariums and indoor ski resorts. You won't wish to leave with impressive attractions like the 7-star Burj Al Arab hotel, fun activities like desert safaris, and a buzzing party scene!
6. Thailand
Thailand entices tourists with a grin as golden as the country's glittering temples and tropical beaches. It is friendly and food-obsessed, sensual and iconic, cultured and inquisitive. Thailand has a lot to offer: the beaches are beautiful, the temples are impressive, and the food is inexpensive and delicious.
Thai people are also known for being friendly and welcoming, especially Black women travelers. While the stares can be daunting, they are primarily motivated by admiration and wonderment. Don't be surprised if you are called "Obama"!
7. Maldives
A Maldivian vacation is an ideal way to reward yourself when the grind becomes too much to bear. The clear turquoise waters and luxury villas, after all, must be seen to be trusted. However, the National Museum, Addu Atoll, Maafushi Island, Grand Friday Mosque, and Fulhadhoo Island are a few of the must-visits if you want some enthralling experience.
8. Portugal
History, delicious food, and picturesque scenery are just the starting point. The Portuguese experience includes medieval castles, cobblestone villages, mesmerizing cities, and pristine beaches. Freshly baked bread, olives, cheese, red wine and crisp Vinho Verde (young wine), chargrilled fish, cataplana (seafood stew), and smoked meats – the locals have mastered the art of preparing simple, tasty meals. Sitting down to eat means experiencing the bounty of Portugal's fruitful countryside and abundant shoreline.
9. Tokyo, Japan
Due to its peculiar fetish culture, outrageous fashion, and steadfast respect for ritual and tradition, the "Land of the Rising Sun" is probably the most beautiful place you'll ever visit. Even more captivating is the country's deep admiration for (and appropriation of) rap music and dancehall reggae music, with nightclubs packed with Japanese B-boys and dancehall fans in most major metropolitan areas.
10. Tanzania
There are numerous reasons to visit Tanzania. Thrill-seekers can climb Mount Kilimanjaro, eager observers can go on safari in the Serengeti, and sunbathers can visit Zanzibar's coastline. Witness the world's only tree-climbing lions that live in Lake Manyara National Park. A trip to this country will also serve as enlightening for any African American who wants to learn more about their ancestors.
The Ultimate Travel Destination Guide for the Black Woman
This post is for all the black women travelers out there who feel insecure and uncomfortable while traveling to a new place and are annoyed when people weirdly look at them. So, these top destinations are the best getaway for them.

History of Tyumen
Prior to Russian rule, the Tatar city of Chimgi-Tura marked the site of modern Tyumen, Russia and served as the capital of the Siberian Khanate. In 1586, Tyumen was the very first city to be founded by the Russians in Siberia. Part of the Ural Region until 1944, today it is the administrative center of Tyumen Region and one of Russia’s key industrial and cultural centers.
The name of the city is still a mystery to researchers. Some suggest that it came from the Tatar word "tumen", meaning "army of ten thousand", while others speculate that the name is a combination of the words "tyu" and "myana", which together mean "my property". Today in the Tatar language, the word "tyumen" literally translates as "lowland", which is an appropriate term for a city which straddles the Tura River.
Whichever theory is accurate, one thing is for sure: today there is something in Tyumen to surprise and delight any traveler desiring to experience firsthand the mysterious romance of Siberia .
Tyumen Attractions
Most Tyumen city tours begin at Tura River Embankment, one of the area’s most scenic spots from which sweeping views of Holy Trinity Monastery and Church of the Holy Cross Exaltation open up from Lovers’ Bridge.
Historical Square marks the site of Tyumen’s earliest settlements. Not far from Historical Square is Holy Trinity Monastery, which opened in 1616 and is the oldest surviving hermitage in the city today. One of Tyumen’s most significant religious sites, it attracts many Orthodox pilgrims from Western Siberia and the Urals. The monastery is accompanied by a gorgeous green square which is particularly beautiful in spring when the apple trees are in bloom.
An equally important religious monument is Znamensky Cathedral (Cathedral of the Sign), located in Tyumen’s historical center. The original 17th- century church was wooden, but after repeatedly burning down it was replaced the following century with a stone cathedral built in the Siberian Baroque style. Major reconstruction work was completed in 1904, and the end result far exceeded expectations. Today Znamensky Cathedral continues to evoke awe with its striking iconostasis and cheerful exterior.
A walk down central Republic Street, where many 19th-century buildings can still be seen, will conjure up images of life in a bygone era. Kolokolnikovs’ Estate Museum Complex, which survived many fires, deserves special attention, as does House Averkiev with its extraordinary balconies and the former City Duma, which today houses the Regional Museum of Local Lore.
Twenty-first century Tyumen can be seen in all its glory as you wander Tsvetnoy Boulevard and Siberian Cats Park, whose name is derived from the square’s many cast-iron feline figures. Tyumen Regional Museum of Fine Arts serves as the city’s central showroom and is particularly known for its unique works of Russian cult artists such as Ivan Aivazovsky, Ilya Repin and Boris Kustodiev.
Tyumen has a good selection of restaurants offering cuisines for every taste and budget. For tourists, however, Chum Restaurant-Museum is a must. The restaurant serves unique Siberian dishes and is decked out in regional memorabilia. Guests even have the option to dine inside a semi-private cabinet designed to resemble a traditional chum (tent) .
Tyumen Souvenirs
In keeping with its Siberian roots, memorabilia with images of reindeer, red fish and bears are all popular. Fur coats and clothing items made from reindeer skins reflect the beauty of local traditional dress and are sure to keep you warm even in the dead of winter. Original figurines carved from bone make an unusual gift, while anyone with a sweet tooth will want to pay a visit to Kvartet Candy Factory, whose chocolates and other sweets decorated with Tyumen landscapes are equally decorative and delicious.
Grab your coat and come for a visit to Tyumen, Russia, the magnificent pearl of Western Siberia!
Amazon Prime Day 2024: Here's what to expect, tips, and tricks
When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more
Amazon Prime Day has grown into one of the biggest sales events of the year, with discounts rivaling those of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. With so many retailers selling on Amazon, Prime members can save on just about anything, from viral beauty products to new unlocked smartphones.
The best Prime Day deals we saw last year included all-time lows on brands like Apple, Vitamix, iRobot, Dyson, Crocs, and, of course, Amazon-owned products like the Fire TV , Kindle e-reader , and Echo smart speakers . We expect to see more of the same this year as well.
It'll be the first major deal holiday of the year, so it's an awesome chance to score summer discounts on big-ticket items and household staples. The retailer's 10th Prime Day event has officially been announced to arrive in July, but the actual days are still unknown. In the meantime, we're keeping tabs on all of the latest Prime Day news, and we'll keep you updated with our findings here.
- Shop the latest deals at Amazon
When is Amazon Prime Day 2024?
Amazon Prime Day is officially coming this July, though the exact days have not yet been announced. In past years, it kicked off on the second Tuesday of the month. If Amazon follows the same trend, it will take place on July 9 and 10. We'll keep this story updated as more details are announced.
What is Amazon Prime Day?
Amazon Prime Day is the retailer's annual mega sale and one of the major benefits of Prime membership. It's a two-day sales event, usually during the summer, that features products from every category, from fashion staples to hot new tech.
Though it used to be a deal holiday of a much smaller scale, Prime Day has grown exponentially since the first one in 2015. Now, you can find almost everything on sale for all-time low prices, matching discounts we see during Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
What should I buy during Amazon Prime Day?
Everything is fair game to buy during Amazon Prime Day. Whether you've been holding out on a pricey new TV or just need to stock up on toiletries, Prime Day is a good time to make your move.
Last year, we saw incredible prices on tech, including 4K TVs , Fire TV streaming devices , Apple products, Kindle e-readers , PC gaming accessories, Echo smart speakers , and top headphones picks. Prime Day tech deals featured brands like Logitech, Bose, Jabra, Sony, Roku, Samsung, TCL, and more.
If you're looking for style and beauty deals during Prime Day, last year, brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Tatcha, Laneige, Levi's, Carhartt, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Adidas, and Marc Jacobs all featured products at rare low prices. That means skincare, makeup, shoes, men's clothing, women's fashion, and accessories will all be available for less.
Home and kitchen products saw no shortage of Prime Day deals either, with big names like Dyson, Shark, iRobot, Philips, KitchenAid, Nespresso, Casper, Leesa, and OXO down to all-time lows for the event. So, whether you need an air fryer , robot vacuum , mattress , or just some sturdy mixing bowls, Prime Day is a good time to buy.
You don't need to be focused on fancy new gadgets or treatments to shop smart during Amazon Prime Day either. We also catch tons of affordable household essentials available for even less every year, like toilet paper, dish soap, doggy bags, and makeup wipes. These deals are sweet, since they save you money on stuff you needed to buy anyway.
How long do Prime Day deals last?
How long a Prime Day deal lasts differs between items, but in general, the best discounts will start during the event and end before the 48-hour holiday is over. Some will last the whole two days while others will only last one, so it's always wise to act on a good sale when you see it. Lightning deals especially go fast, the most popular of which dwindle away in less than an hour.
I always recommend buying a product you've had your eye on as soon as it's highlighted as a Prime Day deal. Regardless of how long it's set to last, oftentimes the best sales run out of stock, resulting in shipping dates being pushed out, or the deal no longer being offered at all. We'll be providing all of the deal context you need to shop confidently and quickly, so be sure to check our roundups of the best discounts when the event rolls around.
Do you need to be a Prime member to shop Amazon Prime Day?
Amazon Prime Day is locked to Prime members only. It's one of the major benefits of subscribing to the service, in addition to other perks like free two-day shipping and Prime Video streaming.
If you have yet to become a member, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial to test it out. Once the official Prime Day dates have been announced, you can even time your free period to overlap with the sale, but it's not a guarantee since sometimes retailers will lock out free members from shopping the best deals.
Do other stores participate in Prime Day?
Although Prime Day is an Amazon-specific event, it's grown so large that other major retailers have started kicking off competing sales to overlap with it. No one has announced a competing Prime Day sale just yet, but if past years are any indication, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy will likely be holding their own events.
These are definitely worth checking out; they often match the best deals on popular items you can find from Prime Day. We'll also be rounding these deals up so you can shop from the retailer that best suits you, whether you're a Target Circle cardholder, My Best Buy Plus member, or Walmart Plus subscriber.
Is Prime Day an international event?
Prime Day occurs in several other countries, but not all of them. Here's a list of countries where Prime Day will be available to shop:
- Netherlands
- Saudi Arabia
- The United Arab Emirates
- The United States
- The United Kingdom
Want to see what Amazon has on sale right now? We've spotted some hefty price cuts on electronics, fashion, home, kitchen, laptops, and more on its main deals page .

Tyumen , founded in 1586, is a large city with a population of more than 700 thousand people located in the south of Western Siberia, about 2,200 km east of Moscow , the administrative center of the Tyumen region .
It was founded as a defensive outpost, which played an important role during the initial colonization of Siberia and the Far East. In the 18th-19th centuries, the town turned into a large transit and trade center, as well as a center of crafts. Photos by: Slava Stepanov .

Passage to Siberia: Exploring historic Tyumen
Tyumen. View up the Tura River. From left: Church of the Elevation of the Cross, School of Commerce, Trinity Monastery with Church of Sts. Peter and Paul and Trinity Cathedral. September 4, 1999
At the beginning of the 20th century, Russian chemist and photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky developed a complex process for vivid color photography. His vision of photography as a form of education and enlightenment was demonstrated with special clarity through his images of architectural monuments in the historic sites throughout the Russian heartland.
Tyumen. View up the Tura River. From left: Annunciation Cathedral (demolished); Church of Elevation of the Cross; Church of the Ascension & St. George; Trinity Monastery. Summer 1912
In June 1912, Prokudin-Gorsky ventured into western Siberia as part of a commission to document the Kama-Tobolsk Waterway, a link between the European and Asian sides of the Ural Mountains. The town of Tyumen served as his launching point for the journey north to Tobolsk, on the Irtysh River.
Cathedral of Icon of Virgin of the Sign, south view. August 29, 1999
During his journey, Prokudin-Gorsky took several extraordinarily valuable photographs of both Tyumen and Tobolsk . My photographs of Tyumen and Tobolsk were taken in the late Summer of 1999.
Humble beginnings
Cathedral of Icon of Virgin of the Sign, southwest view. August 29, 1999
Considered the earliest permanent Russian settlement in Siberia, Tyumen was founded in 1586 on the site of a Tatar encampment at the confluence of the Tura and Tiumenka Rivers. The initiative for its creation came from Boris Godunov, the power behind the throne of Tsar Fedor (son of Ivan the Terrible) and, eventually, to become tsar himself in 1598.

Godunov was closely allied with the Stroganovs, who from their commercial center at the northern town of Solvychegodsk had sent a detachment of Cossacks commanded by a certain Yermak deep into Siberia to challenge the power of the ruler of Siberian Tatars, Khan Kuchum. Although the precise dates are open to question, it appears that, in the Fall of 1581, Yermak captured Chingi-Tura (later Tyumen), but abandoned his conquest, in order to proceed straight to Kashlyk, capital of Khan Kuchum, whom Yermak defeated in 1582 during a battle near the Irtysh River.
Church of the Miraculous Image of the Savior, southwest view. Originally built in 1794-1819, this is an excellent example of "Siberian Baroque" architecture. August 29, 1999
Following Yermak’s death in a surprise Tatar raid in 1584, his conquests remained temporarily unconsolidated after his death. Nonetheless, Boris Godunov was aware of the enormous significance of Siberia and launched a campaign to found settlements, as he did in other border areas of the medieval Muscovite state.
Church of the Ascension & St. George, south view. Originally built in 1770-89, defaced during the 1930s & restored after 2003 with rebuilding of bell tower. September 4, 1999
Like other early Russian Siberian towns, Tyumen originally served as a garrison fortress for Cossacks and other troops, who protected newly developing trade routes in all directions. The eastern connections with China gained particular importance during the 17th century.
Location, Location, Location
Church of the Elevation of the Cross, southeast view. Built in 1774-91. August 29, 1999
Tyumen’s location on the Tura River also provided a direct link westward with the gateway town of Verkhoturye founded by Boris Godunov on the Asian side of the Ural Mountains in 1598. And to the east and north of Tyumen, the Tura River merges with the Tobol, which in turn joins the great Irtysh near Tobolsk. By virtue of its location, Tyumen was destined from the beginning to play a significant role in the Russian development of Siberia.
City Council Building. Originally built in 1828-33 in a simplified neoclassical style. Chiming clock was added in 1857. August 29, 1999
The opening of Siberia for Russian colonization during the late 16th and 17th centuries was an epic confrontation between the vast distances of this severe land and the enterprise of Russian merchants, whose commercial interests coincided with the tsars’ appetite for eastern expansion. Although its rivers were only tributaries of the Irtysh (itself a tributary of the great Ob River), Tyumen was well situated to utilize Siberia’s vast water network.
Kolokolnikov house, corner of Republic Street 18 & Turgenev Street. Originally built in 1804 by the merchant Ivan Ikonnikov, this superb example of classical wooden architecture was acquired in 1888 by the merchant Ivan Kolokolnikov, who modified the original design. August 29, 1999
Like most early Russian towns in Siberia, Tyumen originally served as a fortified settlement for Cossacks and other troops, who in the 17th century protected newly developing trade routes, particularly with China.
Nikolai Masharov mansion, Lenin Street 24. Built in the late 19th century by the founder of the Tyumen Ironworks. August 29, 1999
When the southern boundary of Moscow’s Asian territory became more settled during the 18th century, Tyumen’s importance increased for the development of transportation as well as small commercial and industrial enterprises. Its status as a transportation nexus also involved the exile system, which sent convicts and political exiles throughout Siberia.
Orthodox Church HQ
Commercial building (corner of Republic & Kirov Streets) built by the merchant Nikolai Yadryshnikov in 1897. Example of highly decorated "brick style" favored for commercial buildings in late 19th century. August 29, 1999
As a regional administrative point for western Siberia, Tyumen rapidly became a center of the Russian Orthodox Church. Its Trinity Monastery was founded in 1616 on the high right bank of the Tura River. Originally dedicated to the Transfiguration, the monastery was a modest collection of log buildings until its transformation in the early part of the 18th century by an energetic Ukrainian prelate, Bishop Fyodor Leshchinsky.
School of Commerce (now Engineering Institute). Completed in 1914 during a Siberian building boom stimulated by development of commerce along the TransSiberian Railway. August 29, 1999
As an ally of Peter the Great, Bishop Fyodor saw architecture as a reflection of a broad cultural transformation and the Church of the Trinity that he built at the monastery in 1709-1715 is Tyumen’s earliest surviving building. Gutted during the Soviet era, the Trinity Church has been renovated (with modifications) together with its neighbor, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, built in 1741-1755. Fortunately, Prokudin-Gorsky photographed both shrines in 1912.
Tekutyev Crafts School, Dzerzhinsky Street 2. Completed in 1914, the building is a fine example of provincial "style moderne". August 29, 1999
These early examples of a provincial baroque style served as a model for other 18th-century churches in Tyumen, culminating with the lavish Cathedral of the Icon of the Virgin of the Sign (Znamensky), which has recently been splendidly refurbished. Built in several phases between 1768 and 1891, the cathedral displays the florid decoration typical of much of Siberian church architecture.
Submitting Siberia
Shaichik mansion, Lenin Street 47. Built in 1914 by Yankel Shaichik, major store owner & trader in dry goods. August 29, 1999
The daunting vastness of Siberia’s reaches gradually submitted in the 19th century to new forms of transportation. The first steamboat to ply a Siberian river was constructed here in 1838.
Burkov house, Dzerzhinsky Street 30. Built at turn of 20th century by Vasily Burkov, trader in Siberian grain on an international level (China, Japan). August 29, 1999
The greatest impulse for economic growth came with the completion of a railroad from Yekaterinburg, on the east slope of the Ural Mountains in 1885. This line ultimately became an important segment of the Trans-Siberian Railroad, transporting the wealth of Siberia’s forests, mines and new agricultural regions, as well as leather and other products of local factories.
Kozlov house, Turgenev Street 9. Built at end of 19th century by Ivan & Maria Kozlov, local merchants. August 29, 1999
At the turn of the 20th century, over half a million settlers passed through the town toward Siberia’s open, fertile lands. Fortunately, remnants of this period have survived in the central part of the city.
Nikolaevskoe (Nicholas) Primary School, Lenin Street 5. Wooden building constructed in 1897 as part of a public schools network. August 29, 1999
This memory of the past is especially evident in the city’s remarkable wooden houses, with elaborate framed and carved window surrounds in a style specific to Tyumen. These massive window constructions often include carved panels below the sill as an additional decorative and protective device.
Wooden houses. L:eft: Volodarsky Street. Built at end of 19th century, the house has exuberant carved decorative window frames. Right: Komsomol Street. Built around 1900 as a wing of the A. G. Andreev estate, this small structure displays remarkable examples of decorative fretwork. August, 1999
Their solid construction allowed rows of large windows in wooden houses even in this harsh climate, thus bringing maximum available light to interiors during the long Siberian winters.
The present & future
Log apartment house, no. 57 (street unknown; house may have been demolished). Fine example of carved window frames on typical log structure. August 29, 1999
Tyumen today is the capital of an enormous province - stretching from Kazakhstan in Central Asia north to the Arctic Ocean - that is one of the world’s richest energy producing regions. Tyumen has benefited from this bounty of natural resources and is at present one of the few Siberian cities to show major population growth: from slightly over half a million in the 2002 census to some 850,000 in the latest estimate. As usual in Siberian cities, most residents live beyond the historic center in Soviet-era housing developments.
Minshutin house, Vodoprovodnaia Street 43. Built in 1891, the house was restored in 1998 by architect A. Klimchenko with decorative window frames carved by Vadim Sheetov. September 4, 1999
A walk through the historic center of town shows vivid contrasts of modest pre-revolutionary brick and wooden buildings, rarely more than two stories in height, with ponderous Soviet buildings and sleek new commercial centers. Some of the new structures are private apartment houses, others are banks and office buildings and still others form a part of the expanding Tyumen State University.

In the early 20th century, Russian photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky developed a complex process for color photography. Between 1903 and 1916, he traveled through the Russian Empire and took over 2,000 photographs with the process, which involved three exposures on a glass plate. In August 1918, he left Russia and ultimately resettled in France where he was reunited with a large part of his collection of glass negatives, as well as 13 albums of contact prints. After his death in Paris in 1944, his heirs sold the collection to the Library of Congress. In the early 21st century, the Library digitized the Prokudin-Gorsky Collection and made it freely available to the global public. A few Russian websites now have versions of the collection. In 1986, architectural historian and photographer William Brumfield organized the first exhibit of Prokudin-Gorsky photographs at the Library of Congress. Over a period of work in Russia beginning in 1970, Brumfield has photographed most of the sites visited by Prokudin-Gorsky. This series of articles juxtaposes Prokudin-Gorsky’s views of architectural monuments with photographs taken by Brumfield decades later.
