EA Sports PGA Tour Update Adds 3-Click Swing System And Tons More Good Improvements

Following criticism at launch, EA Sports has delivered a big new update for its pro golf game.

By Eddie Makuch on April 20, 2023 at 9:07AM PDT

EA Sports PGA Tour has been updated with a number of welcome improvements, the biggest of which is the promised three-click swing system that harkens back to golf games of old.

The three-click system lets you click once to initiate a swing, click again at the top of the arc, and then once more at the bottom to complete the swing. Hitting the sweet spot is the goal to execute a good swing. To ensure fairness, some online events in EA Sports PGA Tour have rules about which swing types are supported. The standard swing system will stay in the game as an option.

EA Sports PGA Tour's swing system was criticized at launch for being laggy and inconsistent. According to EA Sports, it was always planning to add a three-click swing system after launch, and now it's finally here.

Also with the new title update, EA Sports PGA Tour has a new "Fast Play" option that skips player reactions. Before this, players had to wait and watch golfers ham it up with the crowd before moving on to their next shot.

The new update also lets players turn the putt meter visibility on and off, and it also provides an on/off option for button hints. Additionally, the putting grid will now fade away after the ball hits the green to help with visibility. Also related to putting, the green grid beads will now "flow more accurately" to help players read putts more effectively.

What's more, the new EA Sports PGA Tour update includes new camera fixes. Previously, playing the ball out of certain positions would limit visibility, but that should be sorted out now. And in another response to player feedback, EA Sports PGA Tour now includes a "shot types" screen in the Pause menu that explains different shot types to players to help them learn what to do.

You can read up on all the major EA Sports PGA Tour changes in this blog post .

Beyond these changes, EA said it is "constantly evaluating community feedback" as it looks to make additional improvements to EA Sports PGA Tour over time. Fans have been calling for a proper tutorial mode to help them learn the basics, but EA Sports didn't say if this is being worked on.

The game was released on April 7 during the middle of the biggest professional golf tournament of the year, The Masters. GameSpot's EA Sports PGA Tour review scored the game a 7/10.

EA Sports PGA Tour gets a 60fps mode and more via title update

EA Sports PGA Tour

EA Sports PGA Tour has added one of the most requested things from the community via a title update today: 60fps mode.

One of the biggest complaints about the game is that, despite looking incredible and being current-generation only for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X, it didn’t offer a performance mode at launch, but title update 4.5 has added that exact option, which EA says means console players can now use the new “visual quality” setting to switch between quality mode and performance mode, via the in-game visual settings screen.

EA says that quality mode “represents the game’s default and original setting, which provides the highest quality visuals at 30 frames per second (FPS)”, while performance mode is “an all-new rendering mode, which provides smoother camera motion and animation at 60 FPS, at the expense of lower resolution and visual fidelity”.

EA Sports PGA Tour quality mode

The screenshot at the top of this article is performance mode, while the image above (just up there) is the quality mode, if that helps you decide to use one or the other.

Ahead of the US Women’s Open kicking off next week, EA Sports PGA Tour has also been updated under the hood, says EA, to “support a series of challenges which will be released during the tournament taking place at the iconic Pebble Beach Golf Links from July 6th through the 9th”.

The main menu also now has dynamic messages, similar to titles like FIFA 23, so the dev-team can update players when new content or patches are released. Update 4.5 includes more than this, also adding quality of life updates and stability fixes, including crashes and softlocks relating to network disconnects. Visual improvements have been made to some hairstyles, and rare occurrences where button spamming after restarting a match would cause the golfer to move to an incorrect position have also been fixed. You can check out the full list of patch notes, here .

EA Sports PGA Tour is out now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S|X.

EA Sports PGA Tour Releases Update 4.0

The latest EA Sports PGA Tour update brings a variety of new content and fixes various bugs to improve the gameplay of this golfing sports game.

EA Sports PGA Tour released the patch notes of its 4.0 update, which fixes various bugs and improves the overall gameplay experience for all golf lovers. This update comes two months after the official release of EA Sports PGA Tour to fix issues and bring many quality-of-life improvements requested by the community.

EA Sports PGA Tour is the latest entry in the eponymous franchise, bringing this sports game back into the spotlight after an eight-year hiatus. Compared to previous games in the franchise, including Tiger Woods PGA Tour and the more recent Rory McIlroy PGA Tour , this new edition of EA Sports PGA Tour brings various new features and gameplay improvements. EA Sports PGA Tour includes over 30 different courses, including Augusta National, the Old Course at St Andrews Links, and two fantasy courses. EA announced that more courses will join the game in the coming months, and one of them is releasing with EA Sports PGA Tour update 4.0.

RELATED: EA Sports PGA Tour Deluxe Edition Includes a Free Game

The patch notes of EA Sports PGA Tour update 4.0 reveal a variety of stability fixes and gameplay improvements, as well as the introduction of new weekly and seasonal content. This update brings the Los Angeles Country Club to all game modes, increasing the number of available courses in EA Sports PGA Tour . The U.S. Open Championship now alternates every season between The Los Angeles Country Club and The Country Club in career mode, and new challenges will be available during the U.S. Open Championship to recreate key moments of this competition.

On top of the stability fixes and new weekly challenges, the EA Sports PGA Tour update 4.0 brings many quality-of-life improvements, such as a new look for the Swing Meter and Aiming Arc to better indicate where the ball will be heading. This update also changes some of the golfers’ models to better represent some of the pro golfers included in EA Sports PGA Tour , which adds women golfers for the first time in the franchise.

EA promised to regularly update its golfing sports game, with more challenges and courses added throughout the months. Ever since the release of Tiger Woods 99 PGA Tour Golf in 1998, the franchise has brought over $771 million to Electronic Arts, and because 2023’s EA Sports PGA Tour sales on Steam amounted to almost $700,000 during the first week of its release, it seems likely that EA will keep on improving the game and release new entries to regain PGA Tour ’s place as one of the most popular sports games .

Among the content and features offered by this patch is the North Course at Olympia Fields Country Club, which is now available in all game modes. Three weeks of new challenges will also be released that recreate key moments from each of the three FedExCup Playoff events.

Season 5 came with a new Pro Pass with exclusive rewards in the free and premium version, such as Scottie Sheffler’s Signature Irons Spec, the new Orange TaylorMade MyStealth 2 Driver, or Jordan Spieth’s Scottie Cameron 009 Putter.

Match Play is now available to play in both Online and Private Match modes. Online leaderboards have been updated to differentiate between Match Play and Stroke Play performance. Share All sharing options for: EA’s golf game returns with more courses, more customization, and more shots

It only seems like the biggest features in EA Sports PGA Tour , which launches April 7, are the ones that fans already played and enjoyed a decade ago. Augusta National Golf Course and all four of the men’s major championships are in; even things like boosted drives with “big-hit moment” camera changes are making a return.

But focusing only on the return of the Masters Tournament, or the visual fidelity with which Augusta National and other courses are presented, would sell short what I saw in a presentation last week. Namely, a career mode that is even more RPG-like than before, offers more ways to customize and mold your created golfer’s playing style, and looks like it will swallow just as many of my evenings as the old Tiger Woods games did.

EA Sports PGA Tour looks like a game where, even though there will be more real-life professionals on the roster than ever, the developers understand that the users themselves are the real stars of the show.

“Even when we had Tiger, over 97% of people play as a created player,” producer Ben Ramsour told Polygon in an interview after the presentation. “So we know that’s a core motivation. However, we’ve done a lot to build these relationships with these pros, and we want to tell their stories in the game.”

Granted, I couldn’t pull much from a single glimpse of the detailed golfer progression screen we were shown. But players will rank up 10 different skills (each with 10 ranks) as they acquire skill points with each level. Lead producer David Baker even intimated that at advanced levels, players will be able to unlock packages of traits that will make their golfer’s abilities resemble the playing styles of the PGA’s and LPGA’s biggest stars.

All of this leans into new gameplay that continues to offer broad-based shot-shaping features and differentiates them even more with 20 shot types, some of which are unlocked in the later stages of attribute progression. Those shot types may also be ranked up, it seems.

“I think a big thing is experimentation,” Ramsour said, noting that players can again create multiple avatars and progress them individually. He also said, “We want users to see, Hey, Tony Finau’s game really matches well to Augusta, but it’s terrible for Harbour Town .”

This is surfaced through a nifty little menu that I saw called Course Fit, which stole the show as far as something new that will connect me more to my created golfer. Course Fit, seen on the course selection screen, gives players a relative view of their skills versus what the course will expect of a winning player. Five attributes — Power, Driving, Approach, Short Game, and Putting — all have bars; the closer a player’s bar is to the course’s, the more they’ll be able to take advantage of that characteristic.

It’s not an attribute boost; it’s just visual information that will give me a sense of just how risky my ideas are on the second shot of, say, one of East Lake Golf Club’s par-5 holes, or how important it’s going to be to stick this approach at Pebble Beach, where there’s a demanding putting game waiting for me.

“So for me, I want to win the major championships,” Ramsour said. “So in my primary created player, I am leveling up the shot types to win the four majors. But eventually, I’m going to want to win every single tournament on the hardest mode. So I know I’m going to have to be less of a bomber and more precise to win at Harbour Town.”

Although players may have multiple created golfers, most stick with one for Career. They will most likely see all of the differences Ramsour mentioned in Challenges, a separate mode, but one that has a supplementary effect to Career.

Challenges, to me, resembled the kind of bite-sized moments available in Madden Ultimate Team’s single-player offering. Indeed, they’ll be live-service content, driven by real-world occurrences, and like MUT, they’ll use different players in addition to the created pro. Baker said that the challenges are designed to play like between-rounds practices, meaning they’ll be shorter experiences focused on a particular skill or a particular moment.

The rewards will be skill points for use in created-player progression, as well as clubs and cosmetic items they can equip. (Importantly, these clubs, equipment, and apparel do not affect player attributes, as they may have in the past.) Golfers can expect a season-based approach here that other online sports video games have adopted.

All of these modes, players, and courses — 30 at launch, the most ever for the standard edition of an EA Sports golf title — mean little if the core gameplay isn’t tight, informative, and understandable. While the event last week was not hands-on, the developers focused on the swing mechanism and the 20 shot types supporting it in a one-hole demonstration at Augusta’s No. 13.

Best example: a “stinger,” which is a lower but safer shot from the tee. Gameplay designer Craig Penner used the stinger to rope a 266-yard drive with Jordan Spieth that still hugged No. 13’s famous left-hand sweep — it just used the downhill fairway to get its distance. In the end, Spieth sacrificed about 10 yards of distance to make a safer shot. This is something I would often try to replicate in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 , but the lowest trajectory that game offered didn’t come close to what I saw last week.

Ramsour, playing as 2022 Masters winner Scottie Scheffler, used a boost-assisted power drive — impressive, and successful, but still a dangerous shot that is a blind approach, and which could clip the treetops if not executed perfectly. But again, Scheffler is longer off the tee than Spieth, so both golfers were playing to type and taking, or avoiding, appropriate risks (especially as they were highlighted by Course Fit).

I was also struck by the bits of commentary we heard from the game as the demonstration played out. For once, it sounded like the broadcast team was actually watching what was being played. Lead commentator Rich Lerner returns from 2015’s Rory McIlroy PGA Tour , and on Penner’s shot with Spieth, I heard him discussing the use of the fairway’s width and slope to get the desired result.

Returning broadcast partner Frank Nobilo (and new course reporters Notah Begay III and Iona Stephen ) also provided context-appropriate color, a dramatic improvement over past games, which mostly offered generic repetition.

“We have tech that delivers detailed analysis on how putts will break,” Baker said in last week’s presentation. “There’s also a system that connects the field reporter analysis of the current situation, and also highlights landmarks from our great list of courses, to tell historical stories from those exact spots on the course.”

EA Sports PGA Tour launches Friday, April 7 — during the second round of the Masters — on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X . Those who pre-order the $84.99 deluxe edition will get access to the game on Tuesday, April 4. The deluxe edition has additional in-game content, such as virtual currency for the in-game pro shop’s items and an XP boost.

Update (March 3): EA Sports has announced that EA Sports PGA Tour will be delayed two weeks from its originally announced release date, and will now arrive on April 7. This story has been updated with the new date.
