What to Know Before You Go River Rafting near Stanley, Idaho

Should i make a reservation with a river rafting guide.

Yes! Being a popular destination for whitewater rafting means you'll want to make a reservation with a guide well before your trip. While some guide companies allow walk-ins, it's reassuring to know you've booked your guided trip ahead of time, especially if you're going with a group.

When is the best time to go river rafting?

You may know that the typical rafting season in Stanley runs from Memorial day through Labor day. You'll also want to know WHEN you go dramatically determines what type of experience you'll have. For instance, Memorial Day through June is the best time to go if you're looking for an exhilarating experience. The snowpack is rapidly melting as the temperatures increase, so the water level is higher, moving faster, and you are most likely to experience class IV rapids. As the rafting season wears on to July and August, a majority of the snowpack has melted, so the water level drops. The rapids downsize to class II and III, making leisurely moments more likely. However, no matter the time of year, or water level, thme to go if you're looking for an exhilarating experience. However, no matter the time of year, or water level, there are equally dangerous obstacles to maneuver.

Can kids go on guided river raft tours?

Yes! Family trips are great for kids 4+. Since river rafting can be inherently dangerous, we recommend going with a guide and booking later in the season when the rapids have settled to class II and III.

What do I need to bring for a whitewater tour?

If you've booked a ere are equally dangerous obstacles to maneuver.

If you've booked a whitewater expedition with a guide, you won't need to bring much. Your guide will supply all of the equipment you need. Depending on the length of your trip in Stanley, your guide may even make you lunch and provide snacks. Always check ahead of time. Refrain from bringing your phone or valuables.

What should I wear on a river raft tour?

Many guests prefer to wear swimsuits and shorts since we recommend clothing that dries fast. For footwear, closed athletic shoes or river shoes are ideal. Refrain from wearing slip-ons or flip-flops. Since you'll be provided a helmet, there's no need for a hat. Remember the sunscreen!

What are the different river rafting trips you can take?

You can do everything from get your feet wet on the local "Day Stretch," with single and half-day rafting and kayaking trips, to embarking on a six-day backcountry adventure through the largest wilderness in the lower 48 states. You can even pair it with a fly-fishing trip! Consider kayaking the run with a guide if you want an extra thrill.

Where can I get guidebooks and maps?

Maps for the Middle Fork of the Salmon , Main Salmon, & other multi-day trips are available for purchase locally.

Middle Fork Salmon River Rafting

Among whitewater rafting rivers, the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho is a legend. The pure, clear, free-flowing river drops 3000 feet during its 105 mile Idaho rafting journey through Idaho's remote and spectacular Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness , the largest wilderness area in the lower 48 states.

Natural and untamed, Idaho's Middle Fork is protected by Congress as one of America’s first Wild and Scenic Rivers. It has shaped its course through a rugged and diverse landscape. There are no roads leading to its banks and little remains of man’s brief presence other than prehistoric pictographs and dilapidated log cabins. The whitewater rapids are fun for all ages and provide a certain excitement only Idaho's famous Middle Fork of the Salmon can!

We launch our boats into the Salmon River nearly 6,000 feet above sea level and immediately enter an enchanted forest of fir and spruce. The river is steep, shallow, and narrow and we careen through boulder-choked rapids. With each passing mile, side creeks tumble into the Middle Fork's clear sparkling water and deepen the flow around our boats. The whitewater rapids are frequent and challenging on the Middle Fork. Guides speak their names with reverence - Velvet Falls, Ram's Horn, the Chutes, Pistol Creek, Devil's Tooth, and House Rock to name a few on this Idaho rafting trip .

Dropping in elevation, the Middle Fork Salmon River widens and the spruce forest opens up to vistas of pine-studded mountains. Rafts drift quietly over deep pools of transparent water—home to native cutthroat and rainbow trout. On trips with 13 or more guests, we have a cargo boat, called a sweep boat with 2 staff members who go ahead and set up camp; on trips with 12 or fewer guests, the gear and guests travel together down the river and guides are still happy to set up your tent if you like.  Guides stop the group often to visit nearby Native American pictographs and pioneer homesteads. ROW guides are intimately familiar with this majestic canyon and use their interpretive knowledge to help draw the silent stories from these historic places.

Further downstream, the trip enters Impassable Canyon. Granite mountains of staggering dimensions slice out of the clear Middle Fork water and into the cobalt-blue Idaho sky. We'll stop for hikes underneath Waterfall Creek and up to Veil Falls. Soaking in the many natural hot springs along the Middle Fork is a highlight for many of our guests.

As we near the end of our Idaho rafting journey, having dropped 3,000 feet in elevation and gained a lifetime of memories, it's hard not to envy the Native Americans and pioneers who spent their whole lives in the vast wilderness along the Middle Fork of the Salmon River.

ROW also offers raft-supported hiking tours of this magnificent country. Load up a day pack with supplies to get you through the day, then hike to camp where your gear will be waiting, the tent will be set up and food will be cooking.

Honoring Native People and Lands

Recognizing the significance of our travels through Indigenous territory, we would like to recognize the communities whose lands we visit. It is our hope, in doing so, to honor their legacies, their lives, and their descendants. To learn more about territory acknowledgement and specific information about the Native communities of this region, please visit our Territory Acknowledgement   page.

Our theme this year was transformation. The outfitters we selected are experts at creating trips that have the power to change lives—the lives of the traveler as well as the residents of the destinations,” notes executive editor Norie Quintos. “The trip is usually just the beginning."

rafters on the salmon river in Idaho

We've run trips on the Middle Fork of the Salmon since 1989 and based on our historical data, we know that on most years we have to start flying into Indian Creek by July 30 because the water gets too low to float on the first 23 miles from Boundary Creek to Indian Creek.  Therefore, we changed our trip logistics and meeting point starting with our July 30 trip from Stanley to Salmon.  Our "Before You ROW" section explains these logistics. You can also read our blog on Middle Fork flows for more information.

Trips from June 1 - July 22: Arrive in Stanley

Arrive in Stanley by 7:00 p.m. MST to meet ROW’s team leader at the Mountain Village Inn for a one-hour orientation meeting. We'll answer any last-minute questions and provide waterproof bags for your gear. Dinner on your own. You could schedule some time at the hotel’s private hot spring (reserve when checking in).

Trips from July 30 - September: Arrive in Salmon

Arrive in Salmon by 7:00 p.m. MST to meet ROW's team leader at the Stagecoach Inn for a one-hour orientation meeting.  We'll answer any last-minute questions and waterproof bags for your gear. Dinner on your own.

ACCOMMODATION : Mountain Village Resort until July 22, Stagecoach July 30th and after (Not Included in trip cost)

Let the Rafting Begin

Meet your group at 7:30am. We'll take a two-hour bus ride to Boundary Creek and start our trip. At 6,000 feet elevation, the air is crisp and the forest thick with fir and spruce. At the river we'll go through a safety orientation while your personal gear is loaded onto our rafts. After orientation everyone chooses a raft (paddle or oar-powered) and climbs aboard. The first 15 miles of the Middle Fork are fast and rapids are steep, narrow and come in quick succession. During lunch we'll explain how we minimize our impact on the river with Leave No Trace camping ethics.

After lunch the river continues to be lively and challenging. Every few hundred yards a creek tumbles into the river increasing the flow. We travel between 10 and 15 miles the first day and arrive at camp around 4:00pm. Enjoy the free time for hiking, fishing, reading or just relaxing. Hors d’oeuvres are served around 6:00 and dinner around 7:30. After dinner a campfire is lit and the warmth invites all to share stories of the day, and life.

ACCOMMODATION : Riverside Camping

MEALS INCLUDED : L, D

Whitewater, Pioneer Homesteads and Sunflower Flat Hotsprings

We awake around 7:00am and enjoy fresh-brewed coffee. Breakfast is served and you pack up your personal gear. The rafts are loaded and we depart from camp around 9:30 for an adventure-packed day of rapids, magnificent scenery and fun. We make it a point to visit one or two pioneer homesteads on these first few days. We'll likely stop to explore the old miner’s camp at Powerhouse Rapids. Today’s a good day to keep your eyes open for the nest of the American Dipper, a small gray bird that swims underwater and builds its nest above fast-flowing water.

We'll have plenty of fun rapids as the river continues its quick descent.  We’ll stop for a soak in Sunflower Flat Hot Springs where several pools above the river cascade over a rocky cliff to create nature’s perfect shower. We make camp around 4:00pm and enjoy hiking, fishing and relaxing. After dinner the night sky welcomes stargazers and, later on, the river lulls you to sleep.

MEALS INCLUDED : B, L, D

Whitewater, Hiking, Native American Pictographs and Loon Creek Hot Springs

The river canyon opens now and we’ve dropped over 1,500 feet in elevation. Days and nights are warmer. The fir and spruce give way to ponderosa pines, sagebrush and riparian hardwoods. The sparkling-clear water carries us swiftly along as the river channel widens and narrows with the underlying geology. One of today's highlights is stopping to view pictographs of the Native American Tukudeka, or Sheepeaters, who lived in this canyon until the 1870’s.

The afternoon is casual as the current slows a bit. We'll learn about early pioneers like Charlie Norton, who had a run in with a bear as amazing as the saga of Jedediah Smith. By mid-afternoon we arrive at camp near Loon Creek, around 50 miles from our starting point. Tonight’s highlight is a hike to the Loon Creek hot springs and anglers may enjoy casting a line into Loon Creek. Summer evenings are long, with darkness arriving around 9:30pm in June and July. The night sky, crackling campfire and fresh mountain air will help you sleep like a baby.

Whitewater, Hospital Bar and Tappan Ranch

Another day of fun rapids and incredible Rocky Mountain scenery. We’ll likely see big horn sheep as we pass several mineral licks. Those fishing will continue to find bountiful trout and birdwatchers are likely to spot golden eagles and falcons. We pass our last hot spring at Hospital Bar, so named because early cattlemen let their stock rest and feed at this large flat and easy ford across the river. We'll also see Tappan Ranch, where Red and Daisey Paulsen-Tappen grew a bountiful garden and raised a family with self-sufficiency and $300 a year in the 1920’s and 30’s.

Continuing on we run the Tappan rapids. This is a great photo opportunity with plenty of splashes and thrills. The final miles to camp offer a chance to lean back and take in the monumental scenery of the River of No Return Wilderness.

Whitewater, Impassable Canyon, Waterfall Creek and Veil Falls

Today we run Haystack Rapid, the most dynamic rapid on the river. Side canyon “blow outs” have changed its course twice in the last few years. This is the official start of Impassable Canyon. Below Haystack rapids, the canyon narrows and deepens creating a series of action-packed rapids. A favorite stop is at Waterfall Creek, where a steep trail leads up to the Bighorn Crags. We walk beneath the falls and on hot days finish with a jump into the river. Shortly downstream the river cuts into the Idaho batholith – the largest monolithic chunk of granite in North America. The river has carved into the granite and created towering walls for neck-bending panoramas. Further downstream we stop to hike to the base of Veil Falls, a soul-stirring cavern replete with pictographs and magic. Today’s scenery is truly among the most astounding on earth.

From camp the silhouette of canyon walls against the wine-dark sky will captivate you as you reflect, celebrate and further connect with newfound friends on your last night on the Middle Fork.

Whitewater, Confluence with the Main Salmon, Take Out

As we push off from shore the river takes us past the former hideout of Earl Parrot, Hermit of Impassable Canyon. His story is as big as the canyon and adds just one more thread of wonder to your Middle Fork experience. As the sun breaks over the canyon rim, more big rapids greet us as we pass beneath vistas of staggering dimensions.

We stop to enjoy lunch on a glistening sand beach just a few miles above the Middle Fork's confluence with the Main Salmon. We proceed onto our takeout, carry personal gear to the waiting bus, and settle back for a two-hour ride to the town of Salmon and the Stagecoach Inn.

ACCOMMODATION : Stagecoach Inn (Not Included in trip cost)

MEALS INCLUDED : B, L

Best Vacation Ever

One of the best vacations I've ever had. Stunning scenery. Loved being on and learning about the river, the history, the geology. The guides (Bridget, Jake, Malcom, Brian, Gavin) are awesome stewards; their sheer enjoyment and knowledge of and care for the river gives me hope for the future. And they were a blast. Row's attention to detail is superb. Thanks to all behind the scenes for an awesome trip.

ROW and their guides were amazing on our recent adventure down the Middle Fork. This trip exceeded our expectations and was so much fun. The guides were all great and did an excellent job of making this trip the best.

The absolute best in the game!

I had the absolute time of my life on this trip. As beautiful as the scenery is, and it is beautiful, the staff made the trip unbelievable. They think of EVERYTHING and are the most incredible, dedicated, good-natured, and knowledgeable people ever. They made us incredible meals, kept us entertained, made us feel a part of our scenery, kept us safe and informed. This trip is magical. Do NOT miss out!

From there on out it is a peaceful float to Torrey’s Hole where we take out and our professional driver ferries you back to HQ in our bus.

Family Rafting & Lunch trips!

Breathtaking in all the best ways, this exciting trip is our most popular, especially for families. Taking off north of Sun Valley at the Elk Creek launch site, ride into the famed rapid “Piece of Cake” that starts off a series of lively class II and III rapids. Between waves, you’ll swap stories with our great guides, learn about local wildlife, and take in some astonishing scenery. Finish with a thrilling three-quarter-mile stretch of class III rapids nicknamed “The Narrows,” and a stop at the clear, deep swimming hole of Jump Rock. Choose this trip in either paddle rafts or kayaks.

Family Rafting Trip | 3-4 Hours

On this trip, you will get a true feeling for river time yet be back in Sun Valley for dinner. The half-day is our most popular trip which begins north of Sun Valley at the Elk Creek launch site.

Around the bend, you will encounter Piece of Cake, which starts off the series of Class 2 and 3 rapids. Between rapids, you will share stories with the guides, learn about local wildlife, and take in some astonishing scenery.

Lunch Rafting Trip | 4-5 Hours

While you and your family experience thrilling Class 2 and Class 3 rapids, our fired up cooks will be preparing for your arrival at our private riverside camp.

You will step on to our beach where appetizers, cold beverages, and a relaxing outdoor setting await. Enjoy a freshly prepared meal, have a second serving, but save room for a deliciously prepared dessert.

After lunch, enjoy a leisurely stretch of river, allowing time to kick back and relax before we take out at Torrey’s Hole.

  • Chevron down Clothing & Gear

We provide wetsuits, splash tops, helmets, fleece, and booties for your trip (children sizes as well). For most trips, these items are not necessary but may be requested by guests at any time (some folks get cold easier than others and it’s always better to over-prepared). Just ask us if you have any questions about the gear we provide.

For early season trips (May and June) and High Adventure Trips, we suggest bringing plenty of clothes (all of our guides carry dry bags to stow extra clothes on the boats). You may also leave clothes on the bus and change at the end of the trip as well. Please stay away from cotton clothing; cotton stays wet, making you cold, and ultimately can affect the enjoyment of your trip.

For all trips, we suggest bringing a bathing suit or shorts, t-shirt, sandals that fasten securely or shoes, hats, sunscreen, and sunglasses, and a water bottle. During the summer months (July and August) most of our guests find they dry off quickly and don’t need much additional clothing.

  • Chevron down Weather

We’ll raft as long as there isn’t hazardous lightning, but ultimately it’s up to you. If you are not comfortable with what Mother Nature is offering and would like to reschedule or cancel, (even the morning of the trip) we have a 100 % money-back policy, no questions asked.

Rivers of Dreams: A Guide to Idaho’s Epic Whitewater Rafting Adventures

Table of contents.

  • Northern and North Central Idaho

Central Idaho

Southwest idaho.

Did you know Idaho has more navigable miles of whitewater than any other state in the Lower 48? With 3,100 miles of rapids, eddies, sand bars and more, you can always find a way to add a day (or six) of whitewater rafting to your Idaho vacation. Idaho serves up mile after mile of pristine river conditions for all levels of whitewater enthusiasts, from rafting rookies to paddling pros. Stack on the gorgeous mountain and canyon landscapes, diverse wildlife viewing and riverside hot springs, and you get an ideal setting for an easy day of sightseeing and nonstop guided paddling fun or the multiday river adventure of a lifetime.

a map of idaho

Northern and North Central Idaho

Northern Idaho is known for its abundant water—everything from the dazzling Pend Oreille, Coeur d’Alene, Priest, Moyie and Kootenai rivers to the legendary Lochsa, Selway and Clearwater rivers.

With continuous Class III to IV rapids, the Lochsa River is perfect for adrenaline seekers looking for a full day of adventure on one wild river. The Lochsa is fueled by spring runoff and is navigable during high water, making May through July the prime time for this trip.

The Selway River is regarded as one of the most remote rivers in the U.S., taking adventurers into the heart of the Selway–Bitterroot Wilderness during a multiday trip. Featuring 47 miles of Class III to IV rapids, the Selway requires a skilled guide to help you navigate the rowdy and technical whitewater. You’ll also be able to enjoy ample hiking opportunities, impeccable fishing habitats and scenic campsites along the way. This wilderness expedition is best experienced from May through August, but you’ll want to plan well in advance, as it is maintained in a highly primitive condition with only one launch allowed per day.

Formed by the confluence of the Lochsa and Selway rivers, north central Idaho’s Middle Fork of the Clearwater River is ideal for those seeking a tamer, single-day rafting trip. One of the first rivers to be designated as “Wild and Scenic” by Congress in 1968, the picturesque Middle Fork of the Clearwater offers several Class I and II rapids. These river conditions are great for beginners looking for a relaxing day on the water or for those eager to tap into the phenomenal fishing available while being surrounded by 1.3 million acres of wilderness. This stretch of river is best traveled from July through September, making it the perfect adventure to cool off on a hot summer day.

The Lower Salmon River presents an easy-going yet exciting three- to four-day experience whitewater rafting in Idaho. This multiday trip starts near the town of White Bird and runs down to the confluence of the Snake River. The relatively warm water (best in July and August) and white sandy beaches attract families and first-time rafters. The rollercoaster-style Class III rapids keep things exciting as you float through the river’s steep and majestic canyon walls, but you will also find plenty of mellow pools for swimming and lounging.

If your schedule doesn’t allow for multiple days on the water, consider a half-or full-day trip on the Riggins section of the Salmon, which runs through the town of Riggins. The Riggins section offers roughly 13 miles of Class III to IV rapids and is best from June through September.

a group of people rafting and kayaking on a whitewater river lined by trees

Central Idaho has rugged mountain peaks, untouched wilderness, sparkling night skies and some of the best whitewater in the world. Mountain towns like Stanley, Hailey, Ketchum, Sun Valley and Salmon make great base camps for half-day, full-day or multiday whitewater runs in this part of the state.

Known among aficionados as one of the best and most-coveted rafting trips in the country, the Middle Fork of the Salmon River is the crème de la crème of whitewater experiences. The Middle Fork runs through the heart of the largest wilderness area in the contiguous U.S., the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness, meaning you’ll spend six days paddling through continuous Class III and IV rapids while spending your nights soaking in riverside hot springs and camping along the banks. Pick a trip in June for a rowdier whitewater experience or during the prime season (July/August) for great rapids, sunny days and world-class fly-fishing. Snagging a seat on this popular trip can be a bit competitive, as the U.S. Forest Service limits the number of private and commercial launches each day during the season (May–September).

The legendary Main Salmon River (aka the “River of No Return”) is the longest free-flowing river in the Lower 48 and offers a remote wilderness rafting and fishing experience. The four- to six-day trips on the Main Salmon take paddlers from the eastern border of Idaho at North Fork all the way west to Riggins. With big Class III and IV rapids, refreshing river pools for swimming and expansive beach areas, all ages and activity levels will enjoy this trip.

Consider a half-or full-day trip on the Upper Main Salmon River, which can be accessed from Stanley or Salmon. The Upper Main offers a memorable whitewater rafting introduction for beginners while keeping it fun for repeat adventurers. You’ll experience the rowdiest water in June, so try a trip in July or August for a less bumpy (but no less exciting) journey.

a family rafting on a river lined with trees

With a mix of deep canyons, high mountains and sprawling deserts, southwest Idaho has diverse terrain and similarly varied and stunning rivers to experience. Boise, Idaho’s capital, is less than an hour from several whitewater rafting opportunities.

The Main Payette River , just north of Boise, is an easy half-day trip (about three hours on the water) and perfect for first-timers and seasoned paddlers. All levels will enjoy the approachable Class I and II rapids along this fun, leisurely run between May and September.

Considered one of the most challenging and revered rafting trips around, the South Fork of the Payette is better suited for adventurers who feel comfortable with heavy paddling through Class III and IV rapids. This advanced stretch of river requires helmets, and there is no shortage of expert guides to happily maneuver you through the whitewater (plan on being wet by the end of the day). Depending on which portion you’re most interested in, you’ll find guided half-day, full-day and two- and three-day trips running from May into September.

For a full-day trip packed with stunning views and rolling waves interspersed with Class I–III rapids and potential wildlife sightings, don’t miss the Upper North Fork of the Payette (commonly known as the Cabarton). While you can plan on getting soaked along the way, this trip will likely have everyone laughing with excitement by the time you reach the final leg. An optimal blend of whitewater rafting and relaxed floating trips on the Cabarton run from May through September.

view of a river running through a canyon

The Jarbidge and Bruneau rivers trip is one of the most adventurous guided whitewater excursions in the U.S., known for its big, technical and steep whitewater rapids and stunning desert scenery. You won’t find crowds here, but rather steep rock walls, slot canyons and narrow gorges decorated with juniper forests, desert wildflowers and breathtaking side hikes. For the few who decide to embark on this challenging journey, the rafting season can run anywhere between April and June. Take note, it’s a fickle season, but pinning down the perfect window to run the river is part of the fun. The trip takes roughly four to six days to conquer. For a shorter version, check out the four-day, 40-mile standalone trip on the Bruneau, with incredible canyon scenery and a five-mile rapid finale.

The Upper Section of the Owyhee in southwest Idaho offers some of the most remote rafting and canyon scenery in the country. Access is challenging, and the whitewater is on the milder side, but those who do venture into this remote canyon are rewarded with the ultimate wilderness experience.

a group of people whitewater rafting on a river within a canyon

Similar to the Payette River, the winding Snake River offers a variety of access points and experiences for those seeking adventure on the water. Hells Canyon , North America’s deepest river gorge, is one of Idaho’s most iconic locations and serves up big splashes for fans of whitewater. A variety of rafting outfitters offer single- and multiday experiences that will accommodate any vacation schedule. The Class III and IV rapids keep things interesting, while mellow stretches of the Snake allow you to revel in the grandeur of Hells Canyon or spot a bear taking a drink along the river’s edge. Trips run from May through October.

The Murtaugh section of the Snake River is an under-the-radar river run. Best suited for the very adventurous, there is a high possibility you’ll end up in the water at some point during your paddle through these big Class IV rapids. This full-day, adrenaline-pumping experience is available during spring runoff, typically in May and June.

The Hagerman section of the Snake provides Class III whitewater at the bottom of Hagerman Canyon, surrounded by wildlife and geologic formations. This spectacular one-day river trip in southern Idaho is best experienced between May and September. If you are in Salt Lake City, Utah, and looking to get on the river, this is one of the closest and best whitewater rafting options.

Now that you know where to go whitewater rafting in Idaho, it’s time to grab your paddles and embark on a thrilling river adventure.

Whitewater rafting season kicks off in May and it looks like a promising season

rafting trips stanley idaho

I'm is the Idaho News 6 neighborhood reporter dedicated to spotlighting stories and adventures from the Backroads of Idaho.

BANKS, Idaho — The rivers at Banks are flowing fast right now, but not crazy high like last season. Whitewater raft companies will start making trips in May on the Payette River system. It's a good time to book a float before the crowds show up around Memorial Day Weekend.

Going with a guide is the safest way to enjoy the river as they train with swift water rescue techniques, they know the river and they spend countless hours honing their skills.

Cascade Raft and Kayak takes kids down the Main Payette

The Idaho Outfitters and Guides Association believes it will be a promising season and Hardy Bender looks forward to starting his season as a guide in about a week on the Lochsa for Three Rivers Rafting.

"I’m excited about going out there and getting into the big stuff to get my head in the right mind space to go back in the backcountry and be as safe as I can back there," said Bender.

The Lochsa is a big water run, but northern Idaho didn't have a good snow year

Idaho is the whitewater state and we have some of the best multi-day trips in the country with the Selway, Hells Canyon of the Snake River, the Main Salmon and the Middle Fork of the Salmon. River runners have their eye on the Middle Fork after a huge landslide dumped a bunch of wood in the river last fall.

"A kid from Helfrich River Expeditions just flew the drainage recently and the images that made its way back look really positive," said Bender. "I’ve got faith that we are going to get off the top this year, if those logs don’t move in a big push we are going to try and get them out."

A logjam on the Middle Fork of the Salmon last fall

River runners need to win a permit in the lottery to float the four rivers, but people can also go with a guide for a once in a lifetime trip. Bender went to school for business and computer science, but after he grew up rafting he decided to try guiding full-time.

"It just changed the trajectory of my life, I’m not in an office in Memphis anymore and I wouldn’t change a thing about it," said Bender. "It's just beautiful, you get to completely disconnect from this wild world we live in and live on river time."

Waking up on the Hells Canyon of the Snake multi-day trip

There are a number of different guides that will run multi-day trips and day trips in Idaho including four that service the Payette River system and customers have a lot of different choices from calm, mellow, and scenic to some pretty wild whitewater.

There is also a large community of private kayakers and rafters. We caught up with Mitch Grabowski and Randi Staudinger after they ran the class four South Fork of the Payette River in their catarafts.

Mitch and Randi navigate Slalom Rapid on the South Fork of the Payette

"Yeah, it is one of a kind we just moved out here, and meeting everybody through the river community has been awesome," said Grabowski. "You have so many opportunities to get out so many different rivers."

The rivers in southern Idaho got the best from the snowpack this year as it has already been a long season on the Owyhee River, the Jarbidge, and the Bruneau. The Snake River Murtaugh started running in March and just peaked at high water with 10,000 cubic feet per second.

Snake River Murtaugh near Twin Falls

The Payette River system, the Boise River system, and Salmon ended up being close to average, but the rivers in northern Idaho ended up being well below average. Those include the Clearwater, the Lochsa and the rivers in the panhandle.
