Vardan - A perfect travel partner

Vardan was excellent with the knowledge about places. He had perfect attitude and commitment to make you enjoy the trip. He used to go out of his way to help us enjoy the trip. He was also very honest and friendly. A very safe driver to travel with. He was very punctual all the time. His english and communication was also perfect. He has a big spacious car which can accomodate bigger groups. Would strongly recommend him

My family (from USA) visited Armenia for the first time this May. We found Vardan's information and hired him for a driving tour. He picked us up in a spacious van from our hotel (he even had water) and was right on time. He speaks great English and would be great for people of any age. There were a few things we wanted to see, but Vardan mostly helped pick where we should go which was great. We had such a great time with him on our first trip that we scheduled a second day trip with him. Vardan took us so many places, but here are a few: Khor Virap, great views of Mt. Ararat, a dolma festival, the Armenia Genocide museum/memorial, Etchmiadzin Cathedral, Lake Sevan (& we stopped at a restaurant), Lake Sevan Peninsula & Sevanavank Monastery, Temple of Garni, Geghard Monastery. He can probably take you wherever you want to go! Vardan was great about answering all our questions about Armenia, the history, and things to do in Yerevan. If he didn't know something, he would even contact his friends or grandmother to get the answer! For example, my dad had some questions about things his grandmother used to do, so he called his grandma right up! He also stopped at great places along the way for us to take photos. Vardan made us feel like family and his two tours were the highlight of our visit to Armenia. We would have never seen so much or learned so much without him! 10/10 would recommend

Why Our Guests Love Africa Tours

This trip was hands down the best vacation we have taken. The guides were excellent, the food was amazing (and plentiful), and the scenery and wildlife were unmatched by anything I have ever seen.

We continue to bathe in the rich memories of the trip and want to thank you, Karen, and all of your people who helped make it such an enjoyable, flawless trip. It certainly did exceed our expectations and we could not be more satisfied with your efforts….It was truly a lifetime experience we will treasure always.

We did a mix of mokoro and game drives: saw lots of lions, giraffes, elephants, hippos, and hyenas, as well as lots of birds while on the water. Saw large groups of giraffes and elephants crossing water, very close-up and impressive! The closeness that we were able to get to the game was awesome. We were literally just feet away from mating lions, stalking leopards, lions eating their kill, the wild dogs, etc, etc. etc. I had no idea that we would ever get that close!

- allan and brenda lem, your adventure awaits, hear what others said about their trip to africa., an unforgettable experience.

After a long hiatus from travel during COVID, the staff at Roane Travel held my hand every step of the way to my dream safari in Tanzania. From planning a personalized itinerary months ahead, to answering all my questions leading up to the trip, to obtaining my visas, then adjusting my program when my husband was unable to go, they pivoted to assist me with anything I needed. On the ground, I was always accompanied by either a company representative or driver/guide. They also helped me find additional activities in Arusha before and after my safari began, based on my available time, energy level, and budget. The lodges were wonderful, the food excellent (staff members at each lodge had been made aware of my gluten allergy ahead of time and were able to advise me regarding menu items). A special shout out to my safari guide - John Mrina - who was relentless in not only finding animals (the Big Five!) but also maneuvering into the best position for photos. On the last day, we followed three cheetahs for over an hour and were rewarded by a live hunt! Thanks for an unforgettable experience!

WHAT ARE THE BIG FIVE? The “Big Five” is a safari term used to describe the Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Cape Buffalo, and Rhinoceros.   WHY DID THE RECIEVE THIS TITLE? In the 1800s trophy hunters considered these animals the most challenging and dangerous animals to hunt on foot. They’re still considered the African Big 5 today; […]

Pioneering World Firsts

We proudly pioneered the first commercial treks of Mount Kilimanjaro‘s Remote Northern Circuit and Shira Routes and have developed new trekking routes in the Ruwenzori, High Atlas and Simien Mountains. Our Madagascar Adventure also gets plenty of attention for its unique itinerary.

Quality equipment

Adventure travel by its very nature will put you amongst the elements. You’ll be comforted to know that our camping based treks are supported by quality equipment, starting with tents, sleeping mats, kitchen services, dining tent with chairs and tables and safety equipment.

Choose from a range of quality accommodations

Whether you plan to camp, prefer a lodge based trip, or are looking for luxury, we offer a wide range of African adventures to suit various budgets and interests. We can also tailor a trip to suit your needs.

Innovative itineraries

Africa is a diverse and contrasting continent, encompassed by our broad and exciting program of active, touring and safari itineraries. We constantly strive to highlight the unique—touring Madagascar’s iconic sights but also exploring its lesser know national parks, spotting wildlife from dugout canoes in the Okavango Delta, or traversing the little-used mountain trails of Mount Kenya.

Custom built, reliable transport

Trained drivers and well maintained vehicles, which are purpose built for our safaris, are what you can expect when on the lookout for Africa’s Big 5 game animals. Safari transport is designed with wildlife viewing in mind, providing unobstructed views and in most cases forward facing seats and air-conditioning.

Our all inclusive approach

Including as many quality services at the best prices make our adventures great value for money. Having essential items like meals, sightseeing and national park fees or camping equipment included in the trip cost allows you to better budget for your big adventure and eliminates the risk of having to carry large sums of money around with you on your journey.

Thoughtful Travel

Responsible Travel practices are at the heart of every program we offer in Africa. When you book one of our adventures you’re supporting true sustainability in the protection of local communities, natural environments and wildlife.

Expert Guides

Africa is a complex continent that requires guides with vast knowledge of local landscapes, flora and fauna, as well as rich local cultures. Our line up of guides is second-to-none; passionate individuals who will truly enhance your African experience.

No Single Supplements on treks

Travelling solo? On our treks we’ll match you with another traveller of the same gender so that you won’t be charged anything extra for the vast majority of our treks. If you prefer a guaranteed single room on tour we can also arrange that for a small additional charge.

The remarkable Masai people&#160;-&#160;<i>Photo:&#160;Ian Williams</i>

On a continent rich in wildlife and cultural diversity that is famed for its spectacular landscapes, the importance of sustainable travel is high. While we aim to minimise our impact on the natural environment by practicing the '7 Principals of Leave No Trace', our adventures support local economies by employing guides and staff from local communities. Our Animal Welfare Code of Conduct, Child Welfare Code of Conduct and Porter Welfare Policy ensure the well-being of animals and children we encounter, as well as the porters we employ on Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, Mount Kenya and in the Ruwenzori Mountains.

In cities and large towns you will be accommodated in 3-4 star properties that are generally centrally located, atmospheric and reliable and where we have seen a good track record with traveller satisfaction over many years. At times, accommodation will be chalet style with a bedroom and bathroom attached to a lounge area. Very occasionally, hotels may have shared bathroom facilities.

Safari lodges

In game parks, national parks and rural locations we use properties that reflect the character of the area. They are generally one storey high and will be a collection of individual bungalows or a series of adjoining rooms, based around a central main dining/lounge area.

Luxury safari lodges

Luxury lodges differ to standard safari lodges in that they feature extra facilities such as swimming pools, satellite TVs or rooms with private balconies. You will find this type of accommodation in East Africa at Serene Lodges and at boutique, 4-5 star lodges in Southern Africa.

Found in Morocco, a riad is a traditional house often located in the ancient medina (walled city) and usually includes an internal courtyard with a garden or water feature. Generally all rooms are a different shape and size, adding to the character. Riads range from elaborate traditional tiled decor to ultra modern furnishings.

A homestay describes any stay with a local family where we share their current home. Sleeping arrangements may be dormitory style and bathroom facilities will generally be shared. The standard is often basic but the experience is unbeatable.

Permanent safari camps

The perfect way to experience Africa wilderness; think of this as a tented hotel. Rooms are individual tents with built-in floors, doors and windows and include an en suite bathroom. Tents are usually placed on a solid structure and may also be sheltered under a solid roof. Guest tents are generally clustered around a main central dining/lounge area and power is either solar or by generator.

Luxury permanent safari camps

A luxury permanent safari camp differs to a standard permanent safari camp in that they feature extra facilities such as swimming pools, satellite TVs or rooms with private balconies; all with premium views.

Bedouin camps

Found in desert regions in North Africa and the Middle East, these are permanent safari camps using traditional Bedouin tents and decor. Bathroom facilities may be basic as water is scarce in the desert. Power is limited to specific hours of the day and is usually by generator when available. Kerosene lanterns or candles provide night time lighting, adding to the ambience.

Camping refers to any accommodation using mobile tents, ranging from large dome tents to small trekking tents. The local camp crew erects the tents or, on a limited participation safari, guests are expected to assist with this process. Group camping equipment (dining tent, kitchen tent, toilet tent) is supplied. Bathroom facilities are shared, and on rare occasions, bush toileting may be required.

Mountain huts

Mountain huts can be considered camping in a basic shelter. These generally consist of dormitory rooms with shared bathroom facilities and in the majority of cases are not exclusive to World Expeditions guests. Some mountain huts have cooking facilities that will be used by your crew; others have separate shelters for this.

What our customers say

5 out of 5 stars

Just wanted to say thanks for your help in organising our amazing honeymoon in Africa. We had a great time and had really good luck with our animal viewings thanks to our fabulous guide/driver on our Safari, no one else we spoke to seemed to see 5 leopards and 3 cheetahs (on top of numerous lions) over 2 days in the Serengeti. I have attached a few of our favourite photos from the trip  (Although I am sure you have seen plenty of these!). We will be sure to recommend you to any friends we have planning any trips to Africa in the future! Thanks again!

- Lisa and Ben / June 2016

Hi Leisha! Thank you for the welcome message. Obviously I am not caught up with my workload or my email. I very much enjoyed my Vic Falls activities. I took a sunset river cruise, went canoeing, attended the Boma Dinner and Drum Show and visited Vic Falls. I liked the Chobe Safari Lodge and those activities. There were many animals along the river which made the river cruises better than the game drives. My favorite was the Sango Safari Camp. The staff and the accommodations were both exceptional. I went on three game drives and one Mokoro river tour. We didn’t see many animals but the staff made the most of it. They were knowledgeable, friendly and excellent chefs! The food was outstanding! I like this property very much. It turns out that there was too much water in the Delta to see a lot of animals. It was really wet making animal viewing tough. Fortunately I like birds and there isn’t ever a shortage of those. I very much appreciate this package you put together, especially on short notice and with restrictive dates. You did a fantastic job! There was a great deal of flying with 10-12 hour stopovers both ways and several flights both ways. I definitely wouldn’t do that again but I doubt that if would be necessary if my dates weren’t restrictive. All in all it was an awesome experience!!!Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

- Traci / February 2017

Hello Gelle! We have returned safely and yes, we all had a great time! We did not meet any troubles. The flight transfers from Harare also went smoothly. It was very nice to see Zimbabwe with all the interesting past and current history. Our guides Tembe and Laban – Zimbabweans- were excellent. - Mokoro-trip – fantastic, with the setting, boat trip and the guides. - Vic Falls – a great time with lots of activities – elephant ride, bungee, rafting, sunset cruise etc. Laban organized some of the stuff. We got T-shirts! - Matopos – a great experience, Lovely camp site, Ian was a fantastic guide! San-history, walking safari with rhinos, the scenery etc! - Great Zimbabwe – very interesting, fascinating! We also had a lovely time in Mozambique at the Archipelago Resort /150USD per night for large bungalows self-catering, also with a lovely restaurant at the place. But so few tourist… both in Zimbabwe and Mozambique – we hope better days for these wonderful destinations will come. We all agreed that the overland-truck concept suited very well for a group of families like ours (with children approximately 10 and above) and is certainly something we would recommend to others. Very easy and convenient, better than driving all these long distances in separate cars on our own.  Combination of camping and hotels were great (all good hotels!). We hope we will be able to go in another journey in a few years. Thanks for great organizing and help!

- Thomas / April 2016

Hey Gelle! We are (begrudgingly) back in the US and trying to get back in the work groove. I miss vacation life! Everything was incredible, thank you. We really appreciate all of your help in making our vacation so wonderful and easy. Specifically, there were a lot of moving parts to this trip which we didn’t know how to organize or schedule. With time I’m sure that we could have managed it but as busy professionals we don’t have the time. Having you educate us on those pieces and then handle all of the logistics with them and the transfers between them was invaluable. We enjoyed simply knowing that everything would be worked out so we could focus on enjoying ourselves. We will definitely consider working with you again for our travel needs.

- Matt Goff / August 2015

Hi Leisha and Gelle Talk about timing. You send an email enquiring about our lost bag, and I am staring directly at it and its contents all over our dining table as I picked it up from the airport today. Egyptair facilitated its return via Emirates Air.  I don’t know how they got it from the Cairo Airport.  At the advice of the Australian Consulate in Cairo, I had engaged a lawyer to try and determine what requirements they needed to release the bag into the custody of my authority.  They CC’d me in on all the email correspondence and they were getting the run around from the airport.  I don’t know how it happened, but we are extremely grateful.  Perhaps the airport thought that I was a real pest and just gave up and decided that I should have back what is rightfully ours. We are both very grateful for the efforts that you both made on our behalf in trying to get our bag back.  We fully accept responsibility for losing it in the first place, but we never thought that once the bag was identified that we would have so much trouble getting it back.  Your efforts, and those of others, really add to the absolutely amazing experience that we had on our travels. I know that I have expressed it many times and you may be sick of it, but we really do appreciate the efforts that you both went to in organising the tour that you did for us.  Your advice and genuine efforts to make it a great experience for us was second to none, and something that we will cherish for a long time.  I would like to stay in touch as we will definitely be back to South Africa at some stage.  I am not very good at Facebook, but if you have an account, I would love to have you both as a friends. I hope that you and your families are both well, and that business is booming.  I am definitely spreading the word on our African experience, probably to the point where people are avoiding me. Kind regards David Rock from Australia

- David Rock / September 2016

We had a most excellent adventure! Thank you! We saw every animal on the “Big Seven” list and so much more! We soared in the hot air balloon over the Serengeti and had a fabulous breakfast. The Masai tour was so interesting, the people were so welcoming. Our guide Doc,with Drifters, went out of his way to make my 60th birthday a real celebration! It was amazing. The second half in Botswana and Zimbabwe had a few challenges. Kenya Air lost our luggage on our way from Zanzibar to Nairobi to Johannesburg. We had to go to the delta with just what we had on the plane with us! Our guide Joe with Drifters, And the staff at the lodges tried to help as much as they could in getting us stuff to buy,,borrow and share to get us through! People on the tour were so very generous in sharing too..being out in the bush was very exciting. Drifters did everything they could to help us get them back. But they wanted 500$ to get them to the delta.  We said no & come to find out they didn’t even have both bags. KenyaAir only sent Joan’s anyway! Which Drifters got to the lodge. We did ok..couldn’t get our bags until Maun ...6 days into our tour! Joe got us to the airport in Maun and my bag was there! We did good though in the bush…we saw so many animals in so many places. The delta was an amazing place. We learned so much… The four nights in the bush camp in Moremi National Park was probably the wildest time we spent seeing animals. We took the plane ride over the delta, saw a breading herd of elephants cross the Chobe River with little babies. We walked to Victoria Falls National Park. Took a game drive into Stanley Livingstone National Park and saw 4 black rhinos & Last but not least by any means…at 60 and 58 years old…my sister and I white water rafted the mighty Zambizi River!! Another dream come true! We couldn’t walk or move very well for 3 days…but we did it! Thank you for planning such a fabulous 32 days! We will never forget! Ann

- Ann / October 2016

WOW Gelle is amazing. After planning a wedding, planning a holiday was the last thing we wanted to do. We had been talking to one of our friends who was also thinking about going to Africa and told us that they had been talking to Gelle Richie from Go2africa who was based in South Africa. We emailed Gelle to see if she could help us and we got a reply back within hours asking us a few questions on what we wanted to do, time, price range. The only things that we really wanted to do was see the big 5, some camping and trek with the Gorillas within a 6 week period. Not knowing much about Africa we asked Gelle what she would do. So Gelle organised us 21 day TransKalahari Adventure where we saw the Big Five and amazing landscape. From there we went to Kenya and Tanzania were we camped in the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro crater. Now this is where Gelle come in, two things i have told everyone that is thinking about visiting Africa is have a travel agent based in Africa and the other is only have Gelle to do it for you. While we were on our way back from Tanzania to Nairobi - Kenya we got a email and phone call telling us about the fire at the Nairobi International Airport. Our flight was the next day at 1240pm. Gelle gave us updates via emails and mobile phone. Having Gelle giving us information we felt comfortable that we still had our flights. Gelle also was in contact with our next tour in Uganda giving them updates so everything would run smoothly. Also at the start of our trip we had our bags go missing at the Australian end. We let Gelle know just to give a update. Gelle was right on the case ringing the airport giving us updates via emails, this was all done outside of office hours, some time 11 pm at night. Gelle thank you so much for helping us see and experience Aftrica. We will be telling everyone that has been thinking about Africa to do it and go though Gelle at Go2afica.com. The only thing we had wish we could of done was to meet Gelle face to face. Thanks again! Josh and Mel Watton

Surrender to the lure of Africa and its diverse wildlife, thousands of cultures and breathtaking landscapes.

Meaning ‘to travel’ in Arabic and Swahili, the word ‘safari’ can describe many types of epic adventure in Africa. There is the ancient Egypt kind – discovering the lost city of Abu Simbel and the Valley of the Kings. The nomadic one – veering away from Morocco’s souqs and medinas and being hosted by a Berber family in the Sahara. The local village version – cherishing moments with Maasai , San, and Malagasy cultures. The wildlife way – search for the Big Five in any number of game reserves and parks: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kruger, and Lake Nakuru, to name a few. What does your African adventure look like?

South Africa

botswana

Botswana is most famous for the glittering jewel of all wilderness areas – the Okavango Delta. The Delta is 15,000 square kilometers of water channels, lagoons and islands. The flood waters from the Central African Highlands over 1,000km away flow into the Delta to create this wonderful wetland within a desert. The Okavango Delta is home to a huge wildlife population from common mammals and birdlife, to those that are not often seen elsewhere, such as Sitatunga, Wild Dog and Wattled Crane.

ethopia

Ethiopia is Africa’s oldest independent country and the second largest in terms of population. Apart from a five-year occupation by Mussolini’s Italy, it has never been colonised. Ethiopia is home to one of the world’s oldest strands of Christianity, a tradition that traces its origins to the time of the Old Testament. It’s unusual geography, particularly the more isolated regions such as those within the Bale Mountains National Park, mean that there are a high number of endemic species and the very real possibility of glimpsing species that only a handful of people have ever seen.

kenya

Magical Kenya is where “going on safari” started a hundred or so years ago. Kenya’s protected areas are home to a different variety of flora and fauna species, each wilderness area specially branded because it has something unique to offer. Sandy beaches, verdant forests, the dry lands of the north, lakes, iconic mountains and game reserves aplenty, Kenya is indeed a magical place to visit. Its attraction is that a traveler can have a variety of experiences within a relatively short space of time and of course it hosts the annual wildebeest migration in the months of August and September in the famous Masai Mara.

Madagascar

Madagascar, the “Galapagos of the African Continent” is the largest African island situated in the Indian Ocean, about 450 km (280 mi) east of the coast of Mozambique. With an area of 587,041 km², the island is slightly larger than France. Madagascar is inhabited by 18 ethnic groups of Malayo-Indonesian, mixed African and Malayo-Indonesian, and Arab ancestry. It is one of the best water sports destinations with untouched beaches, blue sparkling water, colourful coral reefs and small-personalised resorts.

malawi

Malawi is enticing. The warm heart of Africa beckons you with warm smiles and warm greetings of welcome, innate courtesy and a desire to be of service to the visitor. Lake Malawi, the “Calender Lake” is so named because it is 365 miles long and 52 miles wide. It is set among rolling hills, some rising steeply from the water, and covered in tropical vegetation.

' title=

Tropical Mozambique is rich in natural resources, is biologically and culturally diverse. Mozambique is most well known for its 2470km of white sandy beaches and its exotic islands. Lowlands dominate the southern provinces, narrowing to a mere coastal plain north of the cleft where the Zambezi River cuts through the country’s midsection. The Zambezi valley is Mozambique’s most dramatic geographic feature. Throughout the country, the land rises gently from east to west.

Namibia

With over three hundred sunny days per year on average, Namibia is your sun and fun destination. The wide open spaces offer rest for the soul and a getaway from all the hustle and bustle. Not only can you enjoy the Namib Desert scenery, the salt-pans and animals of the Etosha, the mysterious mists of the Skeleton Coast and tropical climate of the Caprivi, you can also enjoy experiencing the dynamics of some of the world’s oldest cultures, namely the Bushman and Himba peoples.

Tourist Photographing a Gorilla in Uganda

Land of 1000 Hills. Rwanda is THE place to go to visit 13 different species of primates, including the Gorilla and Chimpanzee. Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. The park encompasses 4,507m-tall Mt. Karisimbi and 4 other forested volcanoes. Nyungwe is surely one of the world’s most beautiful and pristine mountain rainforests. It’s believed to be one of Africa’s oldest forests and home to habituated chimpanzees and 12 other primates species (including a 400-strong troop of habituated Ruwenzori Black & White Colobus).

Seychelles

The Seychelles is one of the world’s best beach destinations and is  a must for any bucket list. The Seychelles lies northwest of Madagascar and Mauritius at about 4° south of the equator. The Seychelles is an independent nation of 115 islands, not all inhabited and an exclusive economic zone of 1.3 million km². The Inner islands, 42 of them, are granitic (made up of granite rock) and the outer islands or atolls, coralline (formed by coral).

The Seychelles has a population of less than 100 000 people. The main language is Creole but French and English are spoken and understood. All three are official languages.

south africa

South Africa offers one of the most diverse travel destinations of any country in the world. If you want to embark on a luxury safari, self-drive holiday, whale watching, adrenalin sports, romantic honeymoon, beach stay, wine tasting, spa getaways, flower tour or desert experience, look no further. South Africa’s safari lodges are some of the best in the world, with world-renowned food and excellent infrastructure.

Swaziland

eSwatini (Swaziland)

Despite being the smallest country in the Southern hemisphere, Swaziland more than makes up for its lack of size with a hugely diverse range of attractions and activities. As one of the few remaining Executive Monarchies in Africa, culture, and heritage are deeply ingrained in all aspects of Swazi life, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all who visit. As well as the rich culture, the overwhelming friendliness of the people makes all visitors feel truly welcome and very safe.

Tanzania

Most probably the most well known of Africa’s National Parks, the Serengeti plays host to the unsurpassable annual migration of 1.8 million animals. The safari experience is supplemented by the awesome Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara National Park, home to the tree climbing lions, Tarangire National Park, the Ruaha, a rare experience of game viewing spiced up by the fascinating landscape, Katavi National Park, untrammelled and seldom visited and Africa’s largest game reserve, the Selous. These are but a few of the many wildlife reserves on offer in this vast country.

Uganda

Although Uganda is rich in nature and culture, the country is particularly well known for its mountain gorilla safaris. Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa whose diverse landscape encompasses the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains and immense Lake Victoria, generally acknowledged as the source of the White Nile. Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, has ten national parks displaying the best of East Africa.

Zambia

Waterfalls are something special and Zambia has many. Besides the famous Victoria Falls, there are many spectacular waterfalls in the north of the country. It is indeed water that features in almost all the natural wonders of this diverse country. It is the Zambezi River that makes the Lower Zambezi National Park so special, the Luangwa River that results in the superb game viewing in the South and North Luangwa National Parks, Lake Bangweulu, which means “The Place Where the Water Meets the Sky”.

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in Southern Africa known for its dramatic landscape and diverse wildlife, much of it within parks, reserves and safari areas. Most of the interest in this beautiful country centers around the mighty Zambezi River with the famous Victoria Falls, Kariba Dam, Matusodona and Mana Pools. Hwange National Park is the largest game reserve in Zimbabwe and is within a 2-hour drive from the Victoria Falls making for a great tour combination.
