Humpback whale spotted breaching the waters, Jervis Bay

Top whale-watching tours & vantage points in Jervis Bay

Jervis bay and shoalhaven are among the best destinations for glimpsing migratory whales in nsw, with the bay being natural shelter for mothers and calves on their long journey to and from antarctica. here’s where to spot them in the wild..

Destination NSW

Destination NSW

When can you see whales in Jervis Bay?

There’s nothing quite like that first moment you spot a whale breaching and blowing offshore, showing off in a whirlwind of acrobatic twirls. And the Shoalhaven region  on the  NSW South Coast is among the best spots to maximise your chances of glimpsing the gentle giants turn it on, in the wild – whether you’re cruising with an ethical operator, or taking in the spectacle from a rugged clifftop.

The migratory season, when they make their way to and from Antarctica, is between May and November. And during these months, more than 30,000 whales cruise along the east coast of Australia. The route is aptly known as the ‘Humpback Highway’ (although you’ll also spot southern rights, minkes and pilots), and the total route spans more than 5,000km, among the world’s longest journeys undertaken by a mammal. Jervis Bay  marks the halfway point along this epic trail.

The whales use the calm waters of  Jervis Bay Marine Park  as a place to rest and play with their newborn calves. Dolphins, turtles, seals and a menagerie of other marine life also call these waters home and are particularly active when the whales come to visit. If you’re lucky, you might even spot orcas.

Land-based lookouts

From the  Shoalhaven Heads  in the north to  Bawley Point  in the south, you’ll find spectacular headlands that make for great whale watching. Given their locations and purpose, lighthouses make for particularly good viewing. Point Perpendicular Lighthouse  at the northern entrance to Jervis Bay along the cliffs of the Beecroft Peninsula offers sweeping views of Jervis Bay, where female whales and calves often play in the crystal clear waters. Meanwhile, on the southern edge of the bay in  Booderee National Park  is  Cape St George Lighthouse . There are great clifftop walks all through the national park, offering unbroken ocean views.

Another lighthouse lookout is  Crookhaven Heads Lighthouse at  Culburra Beach , and nearby Penguin Head and  Hammerhead Point , a short drive south near the seaside village of  Currarong , are equally jaw-dropping vantage points.

There are endless other headlands to gaze over the waves as you make your way further south, including Warden Head Lighthouse in  Ulladulla  and Bannisters Head in neighbouring  Mollymook . You might even spot a whale breaching while playing a round of golf at  Mollymook Golf Club .

Whale-watching tours and cruises

There are strict rules about how close you can get to whales in the wild. Thankfully, cruise operators in the Jervis Bay and Shoalhaven region provide ethical tourism experiences, which means you can join companies like Jervis Bay Wild  and  Dolphin Watch Cruises  (they also offer whale watching tours) out of  Huskisson to learn about whales and their calves from knowledgeable guides.

Spotting dolphins and seals

While whales migrate through Jervis Bay, many other marine creatures call it home year-round.  Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins are often spotted from shore chasing schools of fish and socialising in pods, and they put on a display to rival the whales. Cruise alongside them on a journey with Dolphin Watch Cruises  or Jervis Bay Wild to watch them playing in your boat’s wake.

Shoalhaven is home to two fur seal colonies, found at either headland of the Jervis Bay Marine Park , with numbers peaking during winter. Join a snorkelling tour with  Dive Jervis Bay  to swim with the seals. Snorkellers and divers will also encounter more than 220 species of fish, as well as weedy sea dragons and stingrays. The same company also offers snorkelling experiences – at a very safe distance – with whales.

For more information about whale watching on the NSW South Coast, visit the  NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service  website.

Accommodation with ocean views

There are plenty of places in Jervis Bay with water views – how amazing if you got the chance to see whales and dolphins from your bed? Enveloped by the rainforest of Booderee National Park ,  The Cove Jervis Bay  is a little pocket of whitewashed paradise. The houses and cabins here can accommodate between two and 23 people, and you can stroll to a private beach.

Bannisters has three unique accommodation options in  Mollymook , including  By the Sea , the Pavilion and the Beach House. All come with views of the ocean, some even from the pool.

Then there’s adults-only  Hyams Beach Seaside Cottages , seven cottages lovingly transformed with pastel exteriors. Pull up a chair on your private deck, open a bottle of something bubbly, and soak up the serenity of your setting, with bush and ocean views.

whale watch cruise huskisson

That's so great, we're so glad you had such a great trip! Thanks for taking the time to give us a review!

We were lucky enough to see some whales, in particular a baby whale learning to breach. We were able to watch it for a while. We saw another lot as well, a mother and older baby whale. It started to come up quite windy as we were heading back, so was glad we did the morning cruise. The staff were great as well.

Thanks so much for your review Howletts! We're stoked that you had such a great trip with us and will pass on the great feedback to our staff!

2 hours was plenty of time for us to find 2 pairs of Mum and baby humpback whale. The staff were lovely and very approachable and informative. We were spoilt with one baby showing us his/hers new breaching skills! For the price, you can’t go wrong!

Thanks so much for taking the time to give us this amazing review ibmcp! We're so happy you enjoyed your trip and agree that's it's great bang for your buck!

Mums And Bubs In The Bay Today, Not Much Action Till Heading In Then Baby Decided To Have Fun Breaching, Was Great, Mum Had A Few Tail Slaps... Always A Great Trip On Dolphin Watch Cruises, Staff Are Always Awesome...

Thanks so much for your review Donna, and we're so glad that the baby decided to shop off for you on the trip home! Come back again soon!

Ithought the boat was a little small for the activity of whale watching. I presumed they would use a bigger boat. Some of the seats needed repair as they were made of a mesh type material on the Explorerand were torn so you couldn't sit on them. Also steps in the aisle is dangerous when going to your seat or on you way out. Staff where friendly enough.

Hi foodymad, we're sorry that you didn't enjoy the vessel, we have a fleet of 4 different boats and, as it says on our brochures and website, we use different boats depending on the conditions every day. The smaller boats still take up to 60 passengers and are industry standard for whale watching, with the increased speed enabling us to find and get to the whales quicker. We're proud of the condition we keep our boats in and have checked Explorer thoroughly and cannot find any seats with any large tears that would prevent someone sitting on them comfortably. Any small tears in the mesh are mended as promptly as possible. Crew take care to warn guests of the small steps on board the boat, and the three 4-inch-high steps in the aisle would not usually be considered "dangerous", but all boats are notoriously easy to trip on, especially while moving around out on the water. We hope you enjoyed seeing the whales or dolphins regardless and are happy that the crew were friendly.

Went whale watching with Captain John October 4, 2019, rough seas but we found the whales! Mother and calf, lots of sightings and a breach. The Captain and crew did a great job, wonderful experience, highly recommended.

Thank so much for taking the time to leave us such a nice review, we will be sure to pass on the feedback to John and the crew! We're so glad you enjoyed your adventure!

Officials begin investigation after cruise ship arrives at harbor with endangered whale corpse across bow: 'We are deeply saddened'

The arrival of a cruise ship in New York led to an investigation after authorities spotted an endangered whale across its bow.

What happened?

The Associated Press reported that the Meraviglia, a ship owned by Swiss-Italian line MSC Cruises, pulled into the Port of Brooklyn on May 5 with a dead 44-foot sei whale across its bow, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries spokesperson Andrea Gomez.

"We immediately notified the relevant authorities, who are now conducting an examination of the whale," cruise line officials said in a statement. "We are deeply saddened by the loss of any marine life."

Gomez told the AP that officials transferred the whale to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and performed an autopsy on May 7. The results have not yet been revealed.

Why is this concerning?

According to NOAA Fisheries , vessel strikes and net entanglement are now the biggest threats to sei whales after the International Whaling Commission issued an edict to halt commercial whaling practices in the 1980s.

Rising global temperatures may be playing an interconnected part. The organization notes that sea traffic is expected to increase as new routes open because of melting sea ice . Additional noise pollution can also impact the ability of certain marine species to navigate their habitats.

Watch now: What would Alex Honnold do as dictator for a day?

As for the nets, "hundreds of millions of marine animals" are killed or hurt every year by these nonbiodegradable entities, as detailed by Plastic Soup Foundation.

Many modern fishing nets contain plastic, a material overwhelmingly made from dirty fuels, like motor oil and gasoline . These nets then leach toxins into our environment.

One investigation found that a group of stranded marine mammals had high levels of PCBs, a now-banned harmful chemical that used to be used in many plastics .

Should cities be allowed to ban cruise ships from visiting their ports?

That's not to mention the 12.1 million tons of plastics that enter our oceans, per the Ocean Conservancy. Other animals have starved from the inside out after ingesting the material .

While it's unclear if the whale was alive before ending up on the ship's bow, its death is an unfortunate reminder of how our activities can negatively impact other creatures — and ultimately contribute to a less healthy planet for everyone who calls Earth home.

What can be done about this?

The AP notes that sei whales are an internationally protected species, and officials with MSC Cruises indicated that they adhere to all regulations intended to protect whales, including altering routes as needed to avoid collisions.

If a collision was indeed a factor in the whale's death, authorities will likely study the data and formulate a plan to limit the possibility of this happening again.

As far as plastic nets are concerned, some governments have already banned bottom trawling , a practice that can result in broken and abandoned gear.

You can help keep our planet and oceans healthy by participating in local cleanup efforts and swapping single-use plastic products, like grocery bags and razors , for reusable items made from less toxic and more durable materials.

Join our free newsletter for cool news and cool tips that make it easy to help yourself while helping the planet.

Officials begin investigation after cruise ship arrives at harbor with endangered whale corpse across bow: 'We are deeply saddened' first appeared on The Cool Down .

It was not immediately clear if the whale was alive before it ended up on the ship's bow.
