After spending an exhilarating weekend exploring the best of Fairfax County, we put together this travel guide that highlights this destination’s natural beauty, incredible arts and culture scene, and historic sites you won’t want to miss just outside of our nation’s capital!

Located in Northern Virginia, you have easy access to Washington D.C. and city amenities, while also having tranquil retreats in nature and some of our country’s most famous historic landmarks like George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Not to mention, Fairfax County has its own urban centers where you can find great shopping, dining, and entertainment options, and a great craft brewery scene.

But first, where is Fairfax County?

Fairfax County, Virginia, is just west of Washington, D.C., making it an integral part of the greater D.C. metropolitan area. It shares its northern border with the city of Alexandria and the Potomac River, which separates it from Washington, D.C.

To the west, it borders Loudoun County, Arlington County lies to the east, while Prince William County is to the south.

Depending on traffic conditions and where you’re going in Fairfax County, you can be as little as a 20-minute drive away from the center of Washington D.C..

Amazing Places to Visit in Fairfax County

• Meadowlark Botanical Gardens

If you love places you can aimlessly wander around for hours enjoying the gorgeous natural landscape, gardens, and a quiet place to sit, without a doubt one of the best things to do in Fairfax County is pay a visit to the Meadowlark Botanical Gardens.

There are 95 acres of trails, gardens, ponds, and wooded areas to meander around. Our favorite being the stunning Korean Bell Garden which serves as a symbol of friendship and cultural exchange. Having lived in Seoul for a few years, we felt a personal connection to this garden which was largely funded and maintained by the local Korean American community.

Features of the Korean Bell Garden include the centerpiece, the traditional Korean Bell that was cast in South Korea by one of the best of the craft using the same techniques used for thousands of years. During special cultural events that take place in the gardens, the bell will be rung using a large suspended wooden log.

There’s also a beautiful pavilion that resembles the walls of Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul, there are four “jangseung” known as Korean traditional totem poles, and Dol Hareubangs, which are carved from volcanic rock from Jeju and serve as gatekeepers and protectors to name a few of the garden’s features.

What’s great is that each season offers a different experience at Meadowlark Gardens with winter illuminations during the holiday season, gorgeous cherry blossoms in the spring, summer blooms, and foliage in the fall making it one of the best things to do in Fairfax County any season of the year!

• Stop by the Mosaic District

The Mosaic District is another one of the awesome places to check out and things to do in Fairfax County if you want entertainment, shopping, and dining all in one location. This mixed-use district has an array of great eateries, entertainment options like Angelika Film Center for independent and international films, and an entire shopping mall.

During beautiful weather, you can enjoy the outdoor spaces here as well and many of the restaurants offer outdoor dining. There are colorful murals that adorn the walls here too!

We had lunch here on our first day in Fairfax and it was difficult to choose where to eat as there were several great options to choose from. We went with Kirby Club for Eastern Mediterranean fare with a focus on Lebanese cuisine.

The restaurant is named after a social club from Akron, Ohio (where I grew up coincidentally) for the Lebanese-American community in the 1930s which I thought was a fun story incorporated into the entire concept of the restaurant.

The setting here is absolutely stunning, we loved the decor and the food was phenomenal. We enjoyed all of the dips (hummus, labneh, and grilled red pepper dip) as well as their kebabs.

There were also so many other great restaurants here to choose from. And honestly, at first, I was hesitant to visiting what seemed like a shopping mall for a nice meal, but they really had a great selection of unique dining establishments and isn’t your typical shopping destination.

• Spend an Evening at the Capital One Center

If you’re looking for fun things to do in Fairfax County in the evening, check out the Capital One Center in Tysons. We honestly thought that this might be a sports arena or something of that vein with its corporate-sponsored name, but were pleasantly surprised to find that this is a great spot for dining and nightlife.

There are several restaurants and even shops located within Capital One Center as well as an outdoor skypark on the 11th floor called The Perch. This space offers a fun tiki bar housed in a vintage camper, a seasonal 18-hole mini golf course, a sculpture garden, corn hole, and a Star Hill Brewery location and Biergarten!

There are occasional events here, we happened to be visiting during Perchfest which had live music and some special events taking place throughout the day and evening.

We enjoyed our dinner with some craft beverages here along with a round of mini golf as the sun went down.

• Explore Workhouse Arts Center

One of the most unique things to do in Fairfax County is visit Workhouse Arts Center . This arts center and complex is home to galleries, studios, events, performances, and even art classes set in the former Lorton Prison.

It’s impressive to see how this space has been transformed and repurposed from a prison into a gathering place for creatives. Even the prison guard tower has artist flourishes added to it.

The prison itself has a fascinating history too and you can explore that at the Lucy Burns Museum which details how this complex served as a Progressive Era reformatory known as the Occoquan Workhouse and where suffragist Lucy Burns served two sentences. There are cellblock tours you can join for a fee or visit the museum for free.

Workhouse Arts Center is open Wednesdays through Sundays and the Lucy Burns Museum is open Fridays through Sundays.

George Washington’s Mount Vernon

One of our favorite places to visit in the Washington DC area and the best things to do in Fairfax County is pay a visit to George Washington’s Mount Vernon. This historic treasure and former home of our country’s first President, George Washington is a gorgeous estate situated along the scenic banks of the Potomac River.

Visitors are welcome to tour inside the gorgeous 18th-century mansion, roam the gardens and grounds, as well as join a scenic river cruise on the Potomac River seasonally. The estate grounds are large and a really great place for a scenic and historic walk through the pioneer farm where you’ll also find historic landmarks like the reconstructed slave quarters that offer a glimpse into what life was like for those enslaved here during Washington’s era.

You can visit Washington’s tomb where his final resting place is located along with Martha Washington. Nearby you can also pay respects at the Slave Cemetery and Memorial where many of the enslaved were buried in unmarked graves. This memorial was dedicated in 1983 to recognize and honor the memory of the enslaved people who contributed significantly to the plantation’s success.

There’s also an immersive and comprehensive museum dedicated to Washington’s legacy which includes his troublesome set of dentures (no, they were not made of wood!), an interactive exhibit where you get to Be Washington and make leadership decisions just as he did, and a Revolutionary War 4D Theater experience to name a few.

What makes a visit to George Washington’s Mount Vernon even more special and one of our most memorable places to visit in Fairfax County is the special events they host. During our visit, we got to experience the annual Colonial Market & Fair Festival where you’ll find tents of vendors selling colonial products, live colonial music performances, food vendors, and even actors dressed as George and Martha Washington!

So many people came dressed for the occasion in period costumes, which was fun to walk around and see. We highly recommend checking out Mount Vernon’s upcoming events to see if anything is happening during your visit!

After exploring George Washington’s Mount Vernon, make sure to plan a meal at the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant . We’ve actually eaten here on two occasions now and the food is excellent and it feels like you’re in an 18th-century dining room. It really is a great addition and way to end or start your Mount Vernon experience.

Reservations are not required but recommended, especially during events or weekends.

George Washington’s Distillery & Gristmill

Did you know that George Washington had a distillery? We did not! Located just a few miles away from George Washington’s Mount Vernon is his distillery and gristmill site, another one of the best historic things to do in Fairfax County.

You can only visit the distillery and gristmill by tour, which gives you a glimpse into Washington’s entrepreneurship endeavors. The actual distillery and gristmill buildings you see today were built on the site of the original and are reproductions.

Your tour guide will take you first through the reconstructed water-powered gristmill where you’ll get to see a demonstration of the grinding process using 18th-century technology before making your way down to the distillery for more background into his whiskey-making process.

It was actually fascinating to learn a bit more about George Washington and his role in whiskey production as it became one of his most successful business endeavors that he only started in 1797 until his death in 1799. The reason why you may have never heard that George Washington made whiskey is likely because he was opposed to Alexander Hamilton’s suggestion of a whiskey tax which lead to the Whiskey Rebellion .

Washington’s last year of his presidency was 1797, and immediately after that his Scottish farm manager, James Anderson convinced him to open a distillery. He did so apprehensively with no branding or label as I am sure he wanted to keep that under wraps as he was the president during the Whiskey Rebellion (although he opposed the idea of a whiskey tax, it wasn’t a great look).

Today, you can buy a small batch of whiskey from the distillery that is branded as being from George Washington’s distillery site! Occasionally they do have whiskey tastings at the distillery too, which you’ll want to make sure you reserve a spot for when purchasing your ticket!

We got to try 3 small whiskey samples at the site of the distillery which was a really unique experience, especially after learning the history of this site and his involvement in whiskey production!

George Washington’s Distillery and Gristmill is open seasonally and included with your Mount Vernon ticket. However, the whiskey-tasting experience is only held on certain dates and requires a special reservation and ticket .

Hit Up the Craft Breweries

One of the best things to do in Fairfax County for beer lovers is take advantage of all the excellent craft breweries in the area!

We definitely didn’t pass up the opportunity to check out a few of the breweries in the area and had to opportunity to also dine at them.

We already mentioned Starr Hill Brewery’s Biergarten at The Perch in Tysons, which is actually a Charlottesville-based brewery. It’s a great evening hang out since there are also other fun things happening at The Perch like seasonal mini-golf and live music!

Caboose Tavern in Vienna is a fun stop for lunch serving up a farm-to-table menu paired alongside their craft brews. Caboose Tavern is also located along the Washington & Old Dominion Trail at mile marker 12, a 45-mile trail that cuts through Fairfax County popular among cyclists set on a former historic railroad bed.

Aslin Beer Company is another fun craft brewery that has a great selection of sours and hazy IPAs. They also have a pizza kitchen and menu if you’re looking for a dining option along with sipping on your craft brews. They now have a few locations, but their beer empire all started in the town of Herndon!

Another brewery in Fairfax County we had our eye on but just didn’t make it to was Ono Brewing Company and their tropical-themed tasting room! They have their craft brews on draft in a self-serve setting which will be high on our to-do list next time we visit.

Enjoy Breakfast at Katie’s Coffee House

One of the most charming places to visit in Fairfax County is Katie’s Coffee House for breakfast! Set in a cozy Irish pub setting you can get your morning caffeine fix here along with baked goods and breakfast items.

The cafe is attached to The Old Brogue, an Irish pub and honestly, it does feel like you’re in that exact setting while visiting!

On the weekends, vintage car collectors gather in the parking lot which is fun to peek at these beautifully restored vehicles! We got to see a collection of cool old Porsches during our visit.

Also, this is a great morning stop before visiting Riverbend Park or Great Falls Park!

• Take a Scenic Hike in Riverbend Park

If you’re looking for a serene place to take a scenic walk then visiting Riverbend Park is one of the top things to do in Fairfax County! Located along the Potomac River, you can enjoy hikes along the well-maintained trails with scenic views of the river along the way.

This also happens to be a popular spot in the springtime for wildflowers and a great spot for bird watchers.

There’s a visitor center that offers snacks, a riverside picnic area, and exhibitions.

We actually used Riverbend Park as a way to walk along the Potomac River to Great Falls Park (which you have the option to drive to as well). If you want to do this, you need to get to the North River Trail (the trailhead begins at the far end of the parking lot along the river).

From here, you walk along a relatively flat wooded, riverside trail that leads you to the Aqueduct Dam, there is a rocky and steeper bit here, but still very easy.

You can continue to Great Falls Park’s observation areas and turn around. It’s a 3-mile hike round trip. Just be sure to schedule in time to stop and take in the views!

• Awe at the Beauty of Great Falls Park

Another one of the best natural gems and things to do in Fairfax County is visit Great Falls Park. Located near Riverbend Park (and you can hike from there to here) along the Potomac River. In Riverbend Park you’ll notice the more serene-looking waters on the Potomac River and at Great Falls Park, this is where the water picks up speed and plunges over jagged rocks.

Check out the three different observation lookout points where you’ll get dramatic views of the rushing water below and the rugged, craggy rocks! There is one area you can walk down closer to the water, but do not get too close as the current is very dangerous here and claims lives annually.

There are also the remains of the Patowmack Canal, which was the first canal in the country that used locks to raise and lower boats.

This is a great place for a picnic, a leisurely hike along the Potomac River, or just witnessing the gorgeous falls here! We were lucky to have been here when a few daredevil kayakers were going over the falls, which was a sight to see!

There’s a $20 fee per car to enter Great Falls Park, but if you have an America The Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreation Lands pass, you can get in without paying the fee. (PS this is a great investment if you visit even only a few national parks in a year!).

• See a Show at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts

Another one of the most unique things to do in Fairfax County, Virginia is visit the only national park dedicated to the performing arts! That’s right, there’s a national park dedicated to the arts and how cool is that?

Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts is a really cool performance venue in a park. We saw Ray LaMontagne perform at the gorgeous Filene Center during our visit. The Filene Center is a beautiful outdoor amphitheater made of wood, which blends into the natural setting and surrounding Douglas Fir trees.

What’s cool about seeing a show here is that you can either find a spot on the lawn for you and your friends and bring in your own small cooler of goodies and enjoy the show from the grassy hill looking right into the Filene Center, or you can opt for assigned seating tickets within the Filene Center.

Not only can you see concerts here but there are also opera, theater, and dance performances that take the stage.

There are spots to grab a drink and some snacks, or you’re welcome to bring your own. The only thing to note is that you can’t bring food into the Filene Center, it has to be eaten before getting to your seat and if you want a drink, they will have you purchase a plastic reusable cup with a lid to avoid spills.

What is really special about this venue is that you’re experiencing the arts in a natural setting. You can catch a performance here seasonally, typically from May through the end of September.

For those visiting any other time of the year, The Barns at Wolf Trap are their indoor venue that hosts smaller-scale performances you can attend too.

• Get Gifts at River-Sea Chocolates

I don’t know about you, but we love finding locally-owned businesses and shops on our travels whether we are looking to bring home a keepsake for ourselves to remind us of our time or looking for a fun souvenir to bring back for someone else as a gift!

One of the perfect places to visit in Fairfax County for that is River-Sea Chocolates in Chantilly. This chocolate shop is a mom-and-pop, run by a local couple who specialize in bean-to-bar chocolates. Their gift store is located right next to where the chocolate is made and they have a wide range of chocolate bars you can bring home along with a case of individual little chocolates you can make an assorted box out of!

This is a quick stop, but definitely worth it if you’re a chocolate lover or looking for a great gift!

• Hike or Bike Along the Washington & Old Dominion Trail

One of the coolest things to do in Fairfax County that we wish we knew about before our visit is the Washington & Old Dominion Trail, aka W&OD Trail which runs 45 miles along a former railway bed passing through Fairfax County (along with neighboring counties).

The trail is popular among cyclists specifically, although you can walk on it as well (just watch out for cyclists!). The trail passes through the natural beauty of the area along with passing through towns and Fairfax County attractions like Meadowlark Botanical Gardens along with breweries and restaurants!

There’s no shortage of stops you can make and it’s really a great way to explore the county, especially in beautiful weather!

Don’t have your own bike? Don’t worry! You can rent one from Green Lizard Cycling in Herndon who has road bikes as well as e-bikes (my favorite). When we stopped in Herndon and at Caboose Tavern we saw people cycling on the trail and it looked so fun, especially with so many great stops you can make along the way!

• Stop by the Town of Herndon

If you love visiting small towns like we do, then you’ll want to add a quick visit to the town of Herndon in Fairfax County, Virginia to your trip. This town was historically a key point along the railroad and today is a great stop for those biking along the Washington & Old Dominion Trail set along the former railway bed!

If you are taking a fun day trip by bicycle on the W&OD, you’ll find Herndon at Mile Marker 20 right along where you’ll see the red caboose! And if you didn’t bring your own bike, don’t worry you can rent one at Green Lizard Cycling , which also has a great coffee shop.

If you’re looking for a beer break, you can find that at Aslin Beer Company’s Herndon location!

If you’re looking to learn a bit more about Herdon’s history, check out the Herndon Depot Museum, dating back to 1857, which narrates the history of the former railway and displays a diverse collection of historical relics.

We love antique shopping, so we did a lap around Roaches in the Attic antique shop, which has a large collection of dining ware and a very well-organized vinyl collection!

• Take a Stroll Around the Town of Clifton

One of the most charming towns and places to visit in Fairfax County is Clifton. This one-street historic town is lined with beautifully preserved 19th-century buildings where you’ll find restaurants, a cute seasonal ice cream shop, a wine shop, and a cafe.

Peterson’s Ice Cream Depot is one of the cutest ice cream shops we’ve ever seen! They have homemade custard, ice cream, and soft-serve ice cream.

Just outside of town is Paradise Springs Winery if you’re looking to try some local wines. This is also Fairfax County’s first vineyard!

Honestly, this is such a quaint little town, we both felt like this was the postcard-perfect small-town America.

Check out Annandale’s Koreatown

For our readers who have been around since the beginning, all of our travels together started when we moved to South Korea. We spent 2.5 years together in Seoul and Korean culture and cuisine holds a special place in our hearts, which is probably why we loved the Korean Bell Garden in Meadowlark Botanical Gardens so much!

Did you know that the DC area has the third-largest concentration of Korean Americans? And the epicenter of the Korean-American community here is in Annandale in Fairfax County, which is considered the unofficial Koreatown of the DC area!

So you know what that means? You can find seriously good and authentic Korean restaurants, shops, markets, and more!

We didn’t pass on the opportunity to eat Korean food while we were in town, we stopped by Honey Pig BBQ for lunch on our last day and got a specialty item we haven’t had since living in South Korea (despite frequenting Los Angeles’ Koreatown and both NYC’s Koreatown and Flushing, Queens!) known as haejangguk (aka hangover soup).

No, we weren’t hungover, but this soup is so good and it’s been a hot minute since we’ve seen it on a menu! The soup is a hearty beef broth served with beef on the bone that is so tender it just falls off along with a few staple Korean veggies like cabbage.

On a previous trip, we also had Korean BBQ at Oegadgib, which is another excellent Korean restaurant that really felt like we were in a restaurant in Korea!

If you’re new to Korean cuisine, we recommend trying BBQ on the first time the beef and pork cuts of meat (we love brisket, bulgogi, and samgyeopsal personally). This is a great beginner segway into the wonderful world of Korean food!

• Catch a Performance

We already mentioned Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, which is a must-visit Fairfax County experience in our opinion. But did you know that Fairfax County has a thriving arts and culture scene beyond the nation’s only national park dedicated to the performing arts?!

There are countless art galleries and performance venues to check out while you’re here.

You can catch a theater production at 1st Stage Theater, The Alden Theatre, and Reston Community Center’s CenterStage.

There are various live music performances you can check out too including The Fairfax Symphony Orchestra at the George Mason University Center for the Arts or check out a smaller venue like Jammin Java who hosts local and emerging artists in a more intimate setting in Vienna.

And be on the lookout for touring productions too! During our visit, the US premiere of ECHO , a new Cirque de Soleil show in a Big Top tent was taking place in Tysons and we got to attend! This was my first time seeing a Cirque de Soleil show outside of Las Vegas in a Big Top and it was such a fun experience!

While shows like this aren’t permanent, Fairfax County is always offering different experiences for the entertainment and arts, be sure to check out their events page to see what’s happening during your visit.

Where to Stay in Fairfax County, Virginia

We stayed at the lovely Archer Tysons Hotel during our weekend exploring all the best things to do in Fairfax County, Virginia! We couldn’t have been in a better location either as we were within walking distance to a few of the attractions, specifically the Capital One Center where The Perch is and where we saw the Cirque de Soleil show.

Archer Tysons Hotel is also located right at the McLean Silver Line Metro Station too, so you have the option to easily to take advantage of the Silver Line stops in Fairfax County as well as Washington DC and even Washington Dulles International Airport.

The hotel offers spacious, sophisticated rooms, some of which have details that pay homage to the former 19th-century peach groves that used to be in the area! The beds were ultra comfortable here and we loved that they had a bar and restaurant on site.

The common areas are also lovely and they have a lovely concierge service. The only parking on site is valet for a daily fee and they offer free coffee in the mornings with a la carte breakfast service at the hotel restaurant if you’re looking for a sit-down meal. They also have a grab-and-go market stocked with snacks and goodies if you need a little treat.

Also, I can appreciate when a hotel has a nice hair dryer in the bathroom along with quality toiletries. The bathrooms are stocked with Malin + Goetz products along with an ionic hairdryer that won’t fry your hair! They also offer complimentary slippers too! Book here.

26. Ox Hill Battlefield Park

Ox Hill Battlefield Park is located on the southwest intersection of Monument Drive and West Ox Road State Route 608 in Fair Lakes, close to Route 50.

During the American Civil War, the Battle of Ox Hill, also known as the Battle of Chantilly by the Union, took place in Ox Hill Battlefield Park, located in Fairfax, Virginia. Only around 1.5% of the nearly 300 acres where the fight was fought, or 4.8 acres, are occupied by it. It was the only significant battle to take place in Fairfax County.

The two memorials honoring Isaac Stevens and Philip Kearny, Union generals who died in the conflict, are the area’s most noticeable features. From the iconic African elephant and dinosaur displays to an exhibit on Ancient Egyptian mummies, this Smithsonian museum houses a collection of more than 145 million specimens. There are also plenty of fun  family programs , including Play Dates for ages 0-5 on most Tuesday mornings.

2. National Air and Space Museum

Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum reopened eight new galleries in October 2022, nearly four years into a seven-year, $1 billion renovation. They include a planets gallery, exhibits on the Wright Brothers and early flight, and more. The museum currently requires visitors to reserve  timed-entry passes online.

3. Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center — Chantilly, VA

The National Air and Space Museum's outpost in Chantilly displays thousands of aviation and space artifacts and aircraft in two large hangars. These include the Space Shuttle  Discovery , a Concorde, and even a Star Wars X-wing Starfighter. Though admission is free, parking costs $15.

4. National Museum of African American History and Culture

Learn about the history, community, and culture of African Americans at this fantastic Smithsonian museum. More than 3,000 objects on display include a stool from the Greensboro lunch counter sit-ins, a dress worn by Rosa Parks, and Chuck Berry's red Cadillac convertible. Free programs for kids include online educational talks and downloadable activity booklets.

5. National Museum of American History

In December 2022, this Smithsonian museum launched its Entertainment Nation exhibit featuring all sorts of pop-culture and sports memorabilia. Families can also see the actual American flag that inspired the national anthem, a five-story dollhouse, and so much more. Plus, there are two hands-on spaces just for kids: Wegmans Wonderplace for ages 0-6 and SparkLab! for ages 6-12.

6. National Postal Museum

At this Smithsonian museum near Union Station, kids can climb aboard a historic railway mail train and a modern mail truck, design their own stamps, recreate the path of mail, and participate in many other hands-on activities. Baseball fans will especially love the Baseball: America's Home Run exhibit, on display through January 2025.

7. National Museum of the American Indian

The imagiNATIONS Activity Center at this Smithsonian museum is a must-visit for families. It features hands-on activities like basket weaving, igloo building, a life-sized tipi to explore, and lots more. There are also plenty of other exhibits kids will enjoy throughout the museum.

8. Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden

9. National Gallery of Art

16. National Museum of the United States Army — Fort Belvoir, VA

This museum celebrates the history of the US Army through various immersive exhibits. Army vehicles, uniforms, and more are on display. 17. National Museum of the Marine Corps — Triangle, VA

18. Library of Congress

19. Historic Blenheim and the Civil War Interpretive Center — Fairfax, VA

Historic Blenheim, a brick farmhouse built in 1859, includes more than 125 signatures, pictographs, games, and thoughts left on its walls by Union soldiers during the Civil War. In the Civil War Interpretive Center, visitors can learn more about the war through an illustrated timeline, artifacts, soldier biographies, and more.

The Washington Capitals NHL team practices at  MedStar Capitals Iceplex  in Arlington, and their practice sessions are free and open to the public. Take young hockey fans to watch their heroes hone and display their skills up close.

21. Storyville — Baltimore and Woodlawn, MD

The Rosedale and Woodlawn branches of the Baltimore County Public Library are home to Storyville, child-sized villages filled with books, toys, and activities for kids ages 0-5. Each village includes a pretend grocery store and mailroom, a puppet stage and theater, a home living area, a construction zone, a library, a baby garden, and a toddler area. Storyville is closed on Sundays.

22. The White House

Seeing the White House from the outside is cool in itself, but you can also write to your member of Congress to request free tickets for a self-guided tour . Note that while tours are wheelchair-accessible, strollers are not permitted.

23. US Capitol

Schedule a free tour of the US Capitol building online. Led by a professional tour guide, you'll visit the Crypt, the Rotunda, and National Statuary Hall. The Visitor Center also has interesting exhibits, including the Democracy Lab, where kids can participate in hands-on learning activities.

24. US Supreme Court

Explore portions of the Supreme Court building and attend a 30-minute Courtroom Lecture to learn the functions of the Supreme Court, the building's history, and the Courtroom's architecture. You can even attend court sessions , though it's recommended that you don't bring young children.

25. Torpedo Factory Art Center — Alexandria, VA

This Old Town Alexandria waterfront landmark is home to the nation’s largest collection of working-artists’ open studios under one roof. Stroll through the center's three floors, watch the artists at work, and see some of their art on display. Be sure to visit the Alexandria Archaeology Museum to see artifacts from the city's past.

26. The Kennedy Center

You don't have to buy tickets to a performance to enjoy the Kennedy Center. The Center hosts various free events and exhibits, many of them kid-friendly. The Hall of Nations, which displays the flags of every country with which the US has diplomatic relations, is breathtaking unto itself.

27. Hidden Oaks Nature Center — Annandale, VA

The indoor area of this great little nature center features a small play structure, a reading nook, dress-up costumes, several live animals, and plenty of hands-on activities for kids. There is also an outdoor natural play area called Nature Playce with climbable logs, rocks, and things to build, as well as woodland trails. Hidden Oaks is just one of nearly a dozen free nature centers near DC .

28. American Girl Washington, DC  — Tysons, VA

There are only 10 locations of the beloved American Girl Store and Cafe in the US and Canada, and one of them is at the Tysons Corner Center mall in Virginia. Kids are welcome to play with the dolls and play sets on display for as long as they'd like, but beware—leaving the store without making a purchase may be impossible!

Follow the yellow-brick road (or I-95) to the magical Wizard of Oz-themed playground at Watkins Regional Park. Kids can slide down a giant pair of Dorothy’s ruby slippers, climb on Emerald City-like towers, and play in Auntie Em’s playhouse. The park is also home to the free  Old Maryland Farm , where kids can interact with farm animals and explore exhibits.

30. National Mall

People come from all over the world to see the memorials and monuments at the National Mall. How lucky are DC families to have them right at their fingertips? Once youve seen them all during the day, take the kids back at night to see them all lit up. Then grab a bite nearby at one of these kid-friendly restaurants near the National Mall .

31. National Zoo

Smithsonian's National Zoo is free to enter every day (just reserve entry passes online) and is home to more than 2,700 animals. Families can see lions, tigers, elephants, and more. When you need a break from the heat, cold, or rain, head to one of the indoor exhibits like the Great Ape House, the Small Mammal House, and the Reptile Discovery Center.

32. Frying Pan Farm Park — Herndon, VA

Kids can hang out with horses, chickens, peacocks, rabbits, sheep, goats, cows, and pigs at Kidwell Farm, Frying Pan Farm Park's recreation of a '30s working homestead. Wagon rides and farm tours are also available. Once they've had their fill of the farm, kids can play on the playground and ride the 1920s carousel.

33. Arlington National Cemetery — Arlington, VA

Visit presidents' graves, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Military Women's Memorial, and more at Arlington National Cemetery. In December, volunteer to lay wreaths at the popular Wreaths Across America event.

See flowers and plants from around the country and the world at the US Botanic Garden, which features both an indoor conservatory and outdoor gardens. Stop by the Children's Garden from spring through fall, where kids are encouraged to touch the plants and dig in the dirt. During the holidays, Season's Greenings is a can't-miss event.

35. Manassas National Battlefield Park — Manassas, VA

Take young history buffs to visit this Civil War battlefield, where you can view exhibits in the visitor center and hike on trails through the battlefield. There are various programs for kids , too.

Stroll through the gorgeous gardens of the US National Arboretum, which look different in every season. Be sure to visit the one-acre Washington Youth Garden , which includes pollinator and sensory gardens, a food production area, and a Nature Explore classroom where kids can engage with agriculture and farming.

37. Franconia Family Recreation Area — Alexandria, VA

Play on a fully accessible Chesapeake Bay-themed playground, ride a carousel, and explore a 2,160-square-foot children's trail—complete with a sound garden and spinning rocks—at Chessie's BIG Backyard. In the summer, cool off at the Our Special Harbor sprayground.

38. Wheaton Regional Park — Wheaton, MD

Wheaton Regional Park is home to both a fantastic playground, renovated in 2020, and Brookside Gardens , a free botanical garden that we love. Brookside Gardens' highlight for kids is its Children's Garden, where little ones can play in an old farmhouse, "cook" in a pretend kitchen, learn about Maryland's natural history, and more.

39. Rock Creek Park

This national park in the city offers loads of free activities for families, from hiking trails and playgrounds to a fantastic nature center. The Rock Creek Park Nature Center features a Children's Discovery Room, exhibits on local plants and animals, live animals, a bird observation deck, a "water-wise" garden, and the only planetarium run by the National Park Service.

40. Green Spring Gardens — Alexandria, VA

Green Spring Gardens is a great place for kids to get hands-on with nature. In addition to various children's and family programs, there are three gardens designed with little ones in mind—the Children's Garden, the Discovery Garden, and the Wildlife Garden. Families can also enjoy trails, ponds, and rotating art exhibits.

With over two acres of play space, this fully accessible playground features play structures with slides, monkey bars, and balance challenges, as well as a variety of climb-on toys including cars, buses, planes, and animals. Run by the National Park Service, Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens is full of nature trails, ponds, gardens, wildlife, and more for families to explore. Kids can even become junior rangers !

44. Gravelly Point Park — Arlington, VA

Lie on a blanket at Gravelly Point Park to see planes flying right above your head as they land at and take off from Reagan National Airport. They get so close, you'll feel like you can reach out and touch them!

45. Skate Park at RFK Campus (Maloof Skate Park)

Pro skater Geoff Rawley designed this 15,000-square-foot, one-of-a-kind skate park for skaters of all ages and skill levels. The park includes a replica of DC's famed Freedom Plaza. Skateboards, roller skates, and in-line skates are welcome, and parents can watch from the built-in bleachers. It's one of a dozen great skate parks near DC for kids and families .

46. Huntley Meadows Park — Alexandria, VA

With its protected wetland habitat, Huntley Meadows Park is one of the DC region's best places for wildlife viewing. You can see herons, frogs, turtles, snakes, beavers, and more. The flat two-mile nature trail—a combination of paths through the woods and a raised boardwalk over the wetland—is stroller accessible. The visitor center features educational exhibits and children's programs.

This 10-acre park along the Potomac River is the perfect place to stroll, play, picnic, and take in incredible views. Kids love to sit on the waterfront steps and feed the geese and ducks, wind their way through the labyrinth, and explore the rain garden. In summer, they can splash in the fountain that features large arcs of water and is especially pretty when lit up at night.

DC'a famous cherry blossoms are absolutely breathtaking, and families flock from all over the world to see them. Thought there are several great places to see the cherry blossoms , the Tidal Basin is the most well-known (and beautiful).

49. Kingman and Heritage Islands

These natural parklands on the Anacostia River in northeast DC are home to more than 100 species of birds, mammals, and other wildlife. Families can enjoy heavily wooded trails, bridges spanning the river, and wildlife-rich wetlands.

50. Theodore Roosevelt Island

This 90-acre park pays homage to the 26th president and conservationist. There's an easy two-mile loop trail offering views of the Potomac River, the Georgetown Waterfront, and the DC skyline with a combination of boardwalks, paved paths, and packed-dirt trails. The hike culminates in a memorial to Theodore Roosevelt that includes a statue and quotations.

Explore Easton, a Quaint, Walkable Town on Maryland’s Eastern Shore

Explore the Talbot County town’s culinary and cultural renaissance.

Eastern Shore Getaways: The allure of a slower pace calls. Discover the mystique of small Maryland and Virginia towns and find places where you can relax and unwind. This is where you’ll find superb seafood, adventurous shopping, and dozens of ways to connect with the region’s pristine natural beauty on land and water.

Drive time from Dulles: 2.5 hours

Small towns aren’t typically hotbeds of culinary excellence, but Easton, Maryland, with its population of 17,300, is giving metropolitan centers a run for their money. In this unassuming Talbot County gem near the Tred Avon River, only a 2.5-hour drive from NoVA, the charms of small-town life blend beautifully with the cosmopolitan ingredients of big-city living. There’s a walkable downtown, independent shops, cultural activities, historical relevance, exquisite fine dining, and even a Champagne and caviar bar with a million dollars of scotch in stock. 

Easton has boomed in the past decade, thanks in large part to energy tycoon Paul Prager and his Bluepoint Hospitality Group . Prager, a New Yorker who relocated his family and his business to Easton during the height of the pandemic, desired to give himself and his employees the finer things in life that they’d miss from the city. His first concept, Sunflowers & Greens , was inspired by his daughter’s craving for a good salad, complete with Russ & Daughters smoked salmon on top.

Other successful concepts, including the James Beard Award–nominated restaurant Bas Rouge , the aforementioned cocktail bar The Stewart , and pastel-perfect Bonheur Pie & Ice Cream followed. Now, Prager owns roughly half of downtown. At Bas Rouge, you may overhear a local say, “We’ve never had anything like this in Easton!” Lucky for us, money doesn’t appear to be an object in Prager’s projects. From rare antique furnishings to the finest wines, his eye for detail has elevated the Eastern Shore town. 

When you’re not eating or drinking, how about some antiquing? Amble down the red-brick sidewalks to find anything from vintage curios to museum-quality pieces at sellers like Vintage Books & Fine Art , Easton Antiques and Art Gallery , and Flying Cloud Fine Art Posters . Consider visiting in July when the 20th annual Plein Air Easton festival takes over the streets for its live outdoor art competition and sale featuring nearly 200 artists, across Easton, Oxford, and Tilghman Island.

Check the calendar for other cultural events, including this June’s Chesapeake Chamber Music Festival , featuring artists from across the world. In the fall, the beloved annual Waterfowl Festival celebrates Maryland wildlife and art over three days. Check out the historic Avalon Theatre for regular events, including live music, book talks, and children’s theater in an intimate, art deco building.  

American history buffs will have plenty to see around Easton, starting with the bronze statue of Talbot County native Frederick Douglass in front of the courthouse. Check the spots on the Frederick Douglass Driving Tour for other Easton stops, including the site of a jail where Douglass was held after an attempt to seek freedom.

Where to Eat

Start your evening with a scotch cocktail or glass of Champagne and sumptuous small plates (like lobster rolls, sashimi, and french fries with caviar) at The Stewart before moving to Bas Rouge , the buzzworthy contemporary European restaurant that earned chef Harley Peet a James Beard Best Chef Mid-Atlantic nomination this year. Every morsel, sip, and detail of the experience is exemplary, down to the background music and china selections. Add the wine pairing option to your three- or four-course meal, where the menu highlights include a fonio and date tabbouleh appetizer and a seared sea scallops entrée.

Epicurean market and wine shop The Wardroom serves up lunch, brunch, and dinner; get a signature sandwich and Bundt cake during the day and return for feature nights like gnocchi Tuesdays. (Tip: Save room in your luggage to bring home some wine, as bottle prices are lower than you’ll find closer to DC.) Piazza Italian Market also has an impressive selection of packaged Italian products, as well as gelato, wine, paninis, and more. Love independent coffee shops? Grab a fair-trade cup of joe at Rise Up Coffee Roasters , the popular regional chain that’s headquartered in Easton.

Where to Stay

Stay in the heart of Easton at The Tidewater Inn ( rooms from $189 in low season and $209 during the peak season ), a historic 84-room hotel just steps from shops and the Avalon Theatre. For more of a charming, upscale bed-and-breakfast vibe, try Tidewater House ( rooms from $329 a night ), the inn’s mansion property with six varied, impressively on-point themed rooms — the opulent French room, with its gilded, French chateau inspo, is surely popular with bridal parties, so book far in advance!

A new on-site Terrasse Spa offers a range of treatments including wrinkle-repair facials and couples massages. Another perk? The bustling Hunters’ Tavern , a casual spot popular with locals and visitors alike, where crowd-pleasing fare like crabcake sandwiches and brunch cocktails keep the masses coming back.

Maps of Two Cicada Broods, Reunited After 221 Years

This spring, two broods of cicadas will emerge in the Midwest and the Southeast, in their first dual appearance since 1803.

Brood XIII , the Northern Illinois Brood, hatched and burrowed into the ground 17 years ago, in 2007.

Brood XIX , the Great Southern Brood, hatched in 2011 and has spent 13 years underground, sipping sap from tree roots.

The entomologist Charles L. Marlatt published a detailed map of Brood XIX , the largest of the 13-year cicada broods, in 1907.

He also mapped the expected emergence of Brood XIII in 1922.

This spring the two broods will surface together, and are expected to cover a similar range.

Up to a trillion cicadas will rise from the warming ground to molt, sing, mate, lay eggs and die.

A Name and a Number

Charles L. Marlatt proposed using Roman numerals to identify the regional groups of 13- and 17-year periodical cicadas, beginning with Brood I in 1893.

A brood can include up to three or four cicada species, all emerging at the same time and singing different songs . Long cicada lifespans of 13 or 17 years spent underground have spawned many theories , and may have evolved to reduce the likelihood of different broods surfacing at the same time.

Large broods might sprawl across a dozen or more states, while a small brood might only span a few counties. Brood VII is the smallest, limited to a small part of New York State and at risk of disappearing.

At least two named broods are thought to have vanished: Brood XXI was last seen in 1870, and Brood XI in 1954.

Not Since the Louisiana Purchase

Brood XIII and Brood XIX will emerge together this year, for the first time in more than two centuries. But only in small patches of Illinois are they likely to come out of the ground in the same place.

In 1786 and 1790, the two broods burrowed into Native lands, divided by the Mississippi River into nominally Spanish territory and the new nation of the United States.

Brood XIII entered the ground in 1786, and Brood XIX in 1790. (Expected 2024 ranges are overlaid on the map.)

As the ground was warming in April 1803, France sold the rights to the territory of Louisiana, which it acquired from Spain in 1800, to the United States for $15 million.

That spring, Brood XIII and Brood XIX emerged together into a newly enlarged United States.

Their descendants — 13 and 17 generations later — are now poised to return, and will not sing together again until 2245.

A ‘Great Visitation’

After an emergence of Brood X cicadas in 1919, the naturalist Harry A. Allard wrote:

Although the incessant concerts of the periodical cicadas persisting from morning until night became almost disquieting at times, I felt a positive sadness when I realized that the great visitation was over, and there was silence in the world again, and all were dead that had so recently lived and filled the world with noise and movement.

It was almost a painful silence, and I could not but feel that I had lived to witness one of the great events of existence, comparable to the occurrence of a notable eclipse or the invasion of a great comet .

Then again the event marked a definite period in my life, and I could not but wonder how changed would be my surroundings, my experiences, my attitude toward life, should I live to see them occur again seventeen years later.

“There is not one story of Virginia, but many,” reads the entrance to one of the long-standing exhibitions at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture in Richmond. It’s a message that resonates across the state, but it’s especially poignant here in the capital, where the history is complex, the residents are passionate, and there’s an unmistakable dedication to conservation, education, art, and entrepreneurship. 

Preservation remains central to Richmond’s character, particularly when it comes to museums and architecture, but this is also a destination that continues to push for change and support new ideas. “It’s not the same Richmond,” says Kelli S. Lemon, a social entrepreneur, community activist, and owner of Urban Hang Suite . She encourages visitors to “come with an open mind of seeing something new” and understand that Richmond is “not what we were known for [in the past], but what we are now.” It’s this multi-faceted, dynamic nature, forever rooted in a sense of place, that makes the city so enticing — and even more transformative. “Be careful,” warns Bill Martin, director of The Valentine , “Richmond… might change you.” 

As Martin tells Travel + Leisure , Richmond is “filled with the powerful stories of people who created our nation and with a variety of experiences where you will find your own story.” Whether your journey includes a walk along the James River, an afternoon browsing the exhibits at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA), or several hours laughing with a friend over dinner in Church Hill, you’re bound to leave with a newfound appreciation of this storied Southern city. Or you may not want to leave at all — Richmond is one of the best places to live in Virginia , according to real estate experts.

The Jefferson

“There’s nothing like staying at The Jefferson ,” says Lemon. The 181-room historic property is the most regal hotel in Richmond, with a history that dates back to 1895. Upon entering the Palm Court lobby, your eyes are immediately drawn upward to the colorful stained glass ceiling; the impressive architecture continues throughout the common areas, most notably into the Rotunda. One of the dining areas for the popular Champagne Sunday Brunch (which requires reservations made well in advance), the Rotunda is outfitted with Corinthian columns, a resplendent staircase, and decor that harkens back to the Gilded Age.

There are touches of this design style in the traditionally decorated guest rooms and suites, but they don’t feel overly heavy or outdated, thanks to a full-scale renovation that took place from 2013 to 2017. To complete the experience, guests will want to dine at the hotel’s restaurant (and local favorite) Lemaire . “Be sure to order the peanut soup or the pimento cheese for a taste of Richmond,” says Jeanita Harris, The Jefferson’s director of guest services.   

Quirk Hotel 

Recommended by both Lemon and Martin, Quirk Hotel is the younger, more modern accommodation option in town. Opened in 2015, the property aims to be a destination “where art and history intersect.” That means you’ll find original artwork throughout the property (which was built as the J.B. Mosby & Co. Dry Goods Store in 1916) —  from the bright guest rooms to the on-site gallery. Before a big day of exploring Richmond, fuel up at The Coffee Bar, then return to The Lobby Bar or Q Rooftop Bar for pre-dinner cocktails. 

Graduate Richmond

Richmond may be a big city, but it’s also a college town. The University of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia State University, Virginia Union University, and Randolph Macon College are all located within the greater Richmond area, so it makes sense that the Graduate Hotels brand would have an outpost in the city. Along with its cozy rooms and a fitness center, Graduate Richmond has an outdoor pool, a rooftop cocktail bar, and an all-day café and bar.

Visiting Richmond’s museums is at the top of Martin’s must-do list. “Of course, start with The Valentine for your introduction to the region’s history,” he says, “Then the options are limitless: the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts , Virginia Museum of History & Culture , Maymont , Science Museum of Virginia , Children’s Museum of Richmond , The American Civil War Museum , and Agecroft Hall & Gardens .”

Spend a day along the glorious James River.

“The James River runs right through downtown,” says Harris, who adds that visitors can choose from the “excitement of class four rapids, a leisurely float down the river in a tube, or a hike along the miles of nature trails.” For rafting, tubing, and kayaking trips, check out Riverside Outfitters . Martin also suggests a more relaxing activity of simply “packing a lunch and finding a rock;” you’ll find a number of large picnic-perfect rocks around Belle Isle .

Take a tour of the Virginia State Capitol.

Free one-hour tours are offered throughout the week at the Virginia State Capitol, located in the aptly named Capitol District. “The tours are about 45 minutes long, and the knowledgeable docents provide a wonderful introduction to Richmond and Virginia history,” says Harris. Plus, she notes, it’s home to a life-size statue of George Washington, which is said to be one of the most accurate depictions of the historic figure. 

Discover local artists and musicians. 

Richmond’s creativity isn’t just relegated to one neighborhood or one category. Rather, it takes on a variety of shapes throughout the city. To admire and shop for locally made artwork, check out Art Works , Iridian Gallery (which focuses on works by LGBTQ+ artists), Arts in the Park (a free outdoor event that takes place in May), Eric Schindler Gallery , or the Crossroads Arts Center . Richmond’s music scene is equally diverse and impressive. To see which performances align with your travels, follow local venues — like The Camel , The Canal Club , or The Broadberry — and local bands and performers — including Cleophus James , Butcher Brown , and The Shack Band .

The Roosevelt

While Martin says pinpointing just one or two top Richmond restaurants is “impossible,” he does mention The Roosevelt (along with Grisette) is one of his neighborhood favorites. Here, Chef Leah Branch brings her own touch to Southern cuisine, with a menu consisting of delicacies like cornbread with whipped maple butter, fried catfish, and tobacco-smoked pork butt. 

There are regular cheese and charcuterie boards, and then there are the expertly curated cheese and charcuterie boards at Grisette . The thoughtful, cozy space is open for dinner Tuesdays through Saturdays, and reservations are recommended. Fair warning, though: You’ll want to avoid filling up on meats and cheeses. It’s crucial to save a bit of room for the fan-favorite profiteroles.  

“Located in the charming Church Hill neighborhood, this is a favorite recommendation for guests interested in seafood. The cocktails are tasty as well,” says Harris. Alewife ’s signature sampler platter, the Siren’s Song, is a classic, although the menu does change weekly. 

Floris at VMFA

After making your rounds through the VMFA’s exhibits — don’t miss the extensive Fabergé collection — it’ll be time for afternoon tea at Floris . The museum’s tearoom features a rotating menu that takes inspiration from the neighboring collections, and the atmosphere and structure are akin to a British afternoon tea. It’s elegant without being stuffy, and the $45 tea service comes with pastries, sweet treats, and savory bites. 

You’ll want to come hungry to Mama J’s , a family-owned restaurant in the historic Jackson Ward neighborhood. Think fried chicken, crab cakes, pork chops, brisket sandwiches, and a whole host of delicious sides — macaroni and cheese, candied yams, and seafood salad included. 

“ Carytown is a favorite area for local shopping,” says Harris. The mile-long stretch of Cary St. is filled with various one-of-a-kind restaurants and shops — and you could spend hours popping in and out of the storefronts. “Guests always come back with lots of shopping bags from World of Mirth , Ten Thousand Villages , For The Love of Chocolate , Traveling Chic Boutique , and GlassBoat ,” she explains. 

Shops at Libbie and Grove

In Richmond’s West End neighborhood, you’ll find a collection of boutiques and gourmet eateries all located along Libbie, Grove, and Patterson Avenues. To update your wardrobe, there’s Nellie George , Peter-Blair , the Shops at 5807 , and Jean Theory . To refresh your home, browse the selections at Fraîche , Gild and Ash , and Beckon Home .

According to Harris, the best time of year to visit Richmond is the fall: “The weather is perfect for going to the river, [or] exploring the city by bicycle, Segway, or on foot.” Plus, she says, “The cooler temperatures also make for pleasant evenings out to enjoy Richmond’s vibrant nightlife.” Spring is also a beautiful time to visit; the daffodils, cherry blossoms, tulips, magnolias, and azaleas are blooming at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden — and you’ll be able to avoid summer’s muggy weather and larger crowds.

How to Get There 

Richmond International Airport (RIC) is one of the larger airports in the state of Virginia, and it’s served by nine major air carriers — including Delta, American Airlines, JetBlue, and United. The airport is only about 10 miles from downtown Richmond, so travelers should factor in about a 15- to 20-minute drive between the two. Uber and Lyft rides are readily available for pickup. Alternatively, Richmond is home to two Amtrak stations; the Main Street Station is located downtown while the Staples Mill Road Station is eight miles northwest of downtown (you’ll need to take a cab to get into the city). 

“Richmond is a city of neighborhoods,” says Martin, and Lemon adds that it’s important for travelers to “go into the local neighborhoods, talk to the people [who] have lived there for a long time, see the architecture, [and] see the local businesses that have been there for years.” 

Church Hill

“Church Hill is home to St. John’s Church, where Patrick Henry gave his famous ‘Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death’ speech, and the architecture and attractions take you back in time,” says Harris. If you’re hungry while in the area, snag a freshly baked treat at Sub Rosa Bakery . 

Jackson Ward

Jackson Ward, a historically Black neighborhood in Richmond, is filled with important cultural and historical markers — including the home of Maggie L. Walker (the country’s first Black female bank president), the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia , and a statue of American tap dancer Bill Robinson. Cuisine in the area is also first-rate, so definitely add Adarra , Mama J’s, and Penny’s Wine Shop to your trip itinerary. 

Scott’s Addition

If you’re interested in a brewery crawl, there’s only one place to go: Scott’s Addition . The area is packed with taprooms, cideries, and distilleries — most of which are located in repurposed warehouses. Consider starting your tour at Bingo Beer Co. , Starr Hill Beer Hall & Rooftop , or Three Notch'd Brewing .

The Fan District

“The Fan, given its name by the streets that ‘fan out,’ is filled with restaurants, bars, shops, and museums,” says Harris. It’s in this part of the city where you’ll find the Virginia Commonwealth University campus, as well as Monument Avenue, the picturesque boulevard featuring stunning homes and the Arthur Ashe Monument (Ashe was a native of Richmond.)

Manchester 

“Another area to explore is Manchester along Hull Street. This neighborhood has its own unique history and is one of the fastest-growing parts of the city with local food favorites like Croaker’s Spot ,” says Martin. 

Brookland Park Boulevard

“I would also recommend exploring the Brookland Park Boulevard (Barton Heights and Highland Park) area,” says Martin. “In these early streetcar neighborhoods, you will find great architecture, history, and small local businesses and restaurants — don’t miss Ruby Scoop’s Ice Cream !”

There are a few ways to explore Richmond. Having a car is helpful, particularly if you plan to cover a lot of ground in one day (just be prepared to test your parallel parking skills). Biking is also a great way to get around the city; Riverside Cycling and The Kickstand both offer half-day and full-day rentals. 

There’s also the local bus system, operated by the Greater Richmond Transit Company, and the GRTC Pulse route is an excellent option for visitors. The “high-capacity bus rapid transit system,” as it’s called, serves a nearly eight-mile route along Main Street and Broad Street.
