Pros & Cons

  • Top wildlife viewing in the Dry season
  • Several species (including cheetah) that don't occur elsewhere in Uganda
  • Excellent birding with many birds of prey
  • Lots of wilderness appeal
  • Growing number of accommodation options
  • Spectacular views over the Narus Valley
  • Very remote and relatively expensive

Kidepo Valley NP Safari Reviews

  • Expert Rating 4.2 /5 – 6 Reviews
  • User Rating 4.8 /5 – 22 Reviews

The park has a very impressive mammals list. Twenty species of predator are resident, and several don't exist in any other Ugandan park (including cheetah and black-backed jackal ). Lion is common and leopard also occurs. Elephant, Burchell's zebra , buffalo and Rothschild's giraffe are all regularly seen, but black rhino has recently become extinct. Twelve antelope species are present – some of which don't occur anywhere else in the country.

  • More about Kidepo’s wildlife

Two valleys (Kidepo Valley and Narus Valley) on either side of predominantly mountainous terrain dominate the park. There are wide, sweeping views of the Narus Valley from many vantage points. Open grassland is interspersed with acacia trees, desert dates and rocky outcrops.

Kidepo has a semi-arid climate that occasionally invites drought in the Dry season (September to March). Average afternoon temperatures sit around 29°C/84°F, except in the park’s higher-altitude areas where it gets colder. The Wet season lasts from April to August. In these months, keep one eye on the sky in the afternoon, when showers arrive like clockwork.

  • More about the weather and climate

Sunny days and thin vegetation make the Dry season (September to March) the best time to go wildlife watching in Kidepo. This is also when animals go searching for a dependable source of water. An advantage of exploring Kidepo when the rains come is that the dust and heat tend to get washed away, and the birding is better.

A Brief About Kidepo National Park

Kidepo Valley National Park in Uganda has an alluring scenery of unique valleys, untampered wilderness, and beautiful animals that welcome you. This Park is the furthest Uganda national park positioned in North Eastern Uganda.

Besides the exceptional wildlife safari experience, this Uganda safari park is another great spot for cultural tours in Uganda. This is especially for those who would like to see the Karamajongo, IK, and Acholi peoples plus other great tribes.

Kidepo is also the definition of remote, and the reason there are so few tourists here is that it is a hard place to reach, but absolutely worth the time and effort to get there.

The original 1,259km² reserves were upgraded to national park status in 1962 , the same year Uganda got her independence. It was extended to its present size of 1,442km² in 1969 .

Kidepo National Park was named after the magnificent Kidepo River . The name ‘ Kidepo’ is a derivative of the Karamonjong ‘akidep’ which means ‘to pick ’ and this river was frequented by people traveling to collect ripe Borassus palm fruits from the Borassus palm trees that line this seasonal water to use for fermenting when making palm beer.

  • Over 77 animal species
  • 475 bird species
  • Spectacular valleys

Animals in Kidepo

The Kidepo National Park habitats support the most exciting animals in Uganda , though its total of 86 mammal species has been reduced to 77 after some became locally extinct in recent years.

Lions, Elephants, Cheaters, Buffaloes, J ackals , Leopards, Spotted Hyenas , Bat-Eared Foxes, Aardwolf, Caracals , African wild dogs, and Antelopes are some of the common Kidepo Valley National Park animals

The dominant wildlife habitat in the Narus Valley is open grassland studded with tall sausage trees and the massive elongated fruits for which they are named.

The Kidepo valley supports drier acacia woodland, through some significant stands of Borassus palms that line the watercourse. Elsewhere are patches of montane forest and riparian woodland.

Kidepo Valley National Park has a thriving and growing Lion Population. It is one of the best places to see lions on tour in Uganda . The lion population in Kidepo is estimated at around 190 individuals.

Africa’s largest predator, the lion ((Panthera leo), weighs up to 190kg. It is one animal that everybody hopes to see on an African safari . An adult lion’s coat is yellow-gold, and juveniles have some light spots that disappear with age. Only male lions typically boast manes, the impressive fringe of long hair that encircles their heads.

Kidepo Valley National Park is home to 5 species of monkeys including, Patas monkeys which are often seen around Apoka safari lodge, Baboons, Vervet monkeys, Red-tailed monkeys, and Black and white colobus

African Elephants

The African Elephant (Loxodonta africana)  is one of the Uganda animals that many look forward to seeing on a safari in Uganda .

The African elephant is not only the biggest of the Big Five, but it is also the largest animal walking on Earth. They can weigh up to 7,000kg, and stand up to 13 ft tall. Elephants are instantly recognizable with their large ears, long curved tusks, and unique powerful trunks.

Kidepo Valley National Game Park is one of the only two places where visitors on a wildlife tour in Uganda might see a cheetah, other place is Pian-Upe Wildlife Reserve.

Cheetahs prefer the open grasslands, savannas, and even hills, and mountains – all-terrain found in Kidepo Valley National Park.  The openness of the park with its grasslands fits the Cheetah’s lifestyle and how they hunt, where they run instead of stalking and pouncing like other cats.

Birds of Kidepo

With over 475 bird specie s, Kidepo Valley National Park has the second-highest population of any Ugandan protected area.

Kidepo National Park has about 56 Raptors species , other common birds include; Dark chanting goshawk, Pygym falcon, Tawny eagle, Bateleur eagle, Vultures, Common ostrich, Secretary bird

Kidepo Valley National Park also supports East Africa’s only population of Clapperton’s francolin and the spectacular African rose-ringed parakeet.

As noted above, Kidepo is the National park where you can see ostriches while on your Uganda tour . The ostrich is the largest feathered creature on Earth.

It belongs to the ratite family, along with its similarly flightless cousins such as emus, cassowaries, and kiwis. It is also the holder of many other records for example;

Ostriches are the fastest birds on land and can reach a speed of 70km. This is not only the fastest land speed of any bird, and the fastest of any two-legged creature, but also faster than most birds can fly.

Secretary Birds

The secretary bird is one of Africa’s weirdest birds. It struts about the savannah with the head of an eagle and the legs of a stork. In reality, it is a bird of prey – with a family all to itself. The Secretary bird possesses a snake-killing prowess that is the stuff of legend.

Snakes form only a small part of the secretary bird’s diet, which also includes insects, small mammals, birds’ eggs, crabs, and other reptiles.

The Narus Valley

The name Narus means ‘muddy’ in Karimong local dialect. Narus Valley is a rolling, grassland plain enclosed by distant mountains.

Wildlife here is prolific throughout the year, but doubly so in the later dry season (January to March) when Narus River is the only reliable source of water for miles around.

The lion Rock within the valley is often frequented by lions and the crocodile pond often attracts huge herds of buffaloes and reliably hosts a profusion of water birds including;

  • African jacana
  • Yellow-billed stork
  • White-faced whistling duck
  • Various herons and egrets

Also, herds of 20 to 30 elephants often come to drink in the Narus River in the morning before marching back to more remote grazing grounds in the afternoon.

The Kidepo Valley and Kanangorok Hot Springs

Kidepo National Park was named after the magnificent Kidepo River within the Kidepo Valley. Kidepo valley is famous for the scenic Borassus palm tree a delicacy of elephants as well as indigenous communities; they are beautifully scattered all through the valley.

Possibly, the name ‘Kidepo’ is a derivative of the Karamonjong ‘akidep’ which means ‘to pick’ and as the Kidepo Valley was frequented by people traveling to collect ripe Borassus palm fruits  from the Borassus palm trees that line the Kidepo River.

Mount Morungole

Mount Morungole (also known as the IK land) stands at 2,750m on the eastern border of Kidepo Valley National Park.

This forest-swathed range is best known as the main stronghold of  the Uganda’s last  population of around 10,000 IK people (the smallest ethnic group in Uganda, with their own unique culture) who hold the mountain sacred. This region can be explored on foot with a ranger.

Namamukweny Valley

Namamukweny is a Napore word meaning “ a place with no birds  or a lonely place with few people”. However, regarding the birds, quite the opposite is true. The valley is inhabited by a large number of bird species such as;

  • Eastern Paradise Whydah
  • White-crested Turaco
  • Common Bulbul
  • Abyssinian Roller, and
  • Green-Wood Hoopoe, etc.

Namamukweny Valley is located northwest of the park and can be accessed by car or on foot.

The Karamojong People

The name Karamojong was derived from the phrase “ekar ngimojong”, meaning “the old men can walk no further”. The Karamojong people are Uganda’s most distinctive tribe known for their love for cattle and cattle rustling and their resistance to the trappings of the modern world.

They take a lot of pride in their culture and customs, habor foreign interference with their traditional lifestyle, and view new trends in life, travel, education, technology, dress, fashion, housing, medicines, religion, and several others as an unnecessary inconvenience.

This cattle-herding group of people lives on the edge of Kidepo Valley National park in their manyattas (villages) surrounded by sharp thorns, with small entry points for people and a larger entry point for cattle.

The IK People (The Mountain People)

You will need an early morning start to climb up into the Monrungole Mountains for a visit with the mysterious Ik people. The climb is steep, part of the adventure of the day.

The IK is the smallest ethnic group in Africa, with between 10,000 to 11,000 people. In the local language, “IK” loosely translates to “the first to migrate here”.

True to the meaning of their name, they were the first settlers in the region possibly running away from their warrior neighbors.

The Mountain People, ( the IK) are traditional hunter-gatherers who probably migrated from present-day Ethiopia and speak a unique language quite different from the Karamojong tongue close to Spanish.

Much of Kidepo is flat terrain with scenic undulating hills scattered in a few spots. The vegetation is high catching grassland and savannah that spread into horizons beyond the eye can see. These natural conditions make spotting wildlife less difficult and game viewing is highly successful.

There is a night game drives and normal daytime game drive in Kidepo . There are two sections in Kidepo valley national park where game drive safaris are conducted; Narus valley and Kidepo valley.

Bird watching safaris

For travelers on bird-watching tours in Uganda, Kidepo Valley National Park host over 457 species of birds, the second-highest population of any protected area in Uganda, following only Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Sixty birds on its list haven’t been recorded in any other Uganda safari park. No comprehensive survey has been done, so visitors could easily see some species not previously recorded for the park.

Kidepo is perfect for Uganda safari destination for spotting raptors, with 56 species on record

After a morning cup of coffee at around 6.30 am, we embark on a thrilling game drive in the short-grass savannah stretches of Kidepo Valley National Park intercepted by patches of Borassus palm and the rising scenic hills.

We explore the beautiful views of the sun shining over the hills of Lomej, the Lotukei Mountains to the north close to the Sudan border, and the Morungole range to the southern boundary of the park before the rays strike down to the endless valleys of Kidepo and Narus.

We undertake an extensive game drive lasting 3-4 hours exploring the natural offerings of Kidepo that have made Kidepo one of the loveliest places in not just Uganda, but all of Africa.

The possible sights range from Lions to Leopards, Elephants, Buffaloes, Black-backed jackals, Side striped jackals, Spotted hyenas, Burchell’s Zebras, Rothschild’s giraffes, Eland antelopes, Cheetahs, Lesser Kudu, Greater kudu, Guenther’s dik-dik, Klipspringers, Caracals, Chandler’s mountain reedbuck, Defassa waterbucks, and Jackson’s hartebeests plus much more as the checklist of mammals reach 77 species .

The extensions to Kidepo Valley reward you with the sights of Ostriches only found here in the whole of Uganda and several other amazing bird species including Secretary bird, Dark chanting goshawk, Pygmy Falcon, Tawny eagle, Bateleur eagle, and Vultures.

Retreat back to the lodge for relaxation till lunch and in the afternoon, you embark on the community tour of the Karimajong people at Karenna and Kapedo. The Karamojong are Uganda’s most distinctive ethnic tribe.

The colorful blankets, piercings, and beads they wear, as well as the language and other cultural traits of the Karamajong, set them apart from other tribes in Uganda. They are well known for their love for cattle and cattle rustling and their resistance to the trappings of the modern world. They take a lot of pride in their culture and customs, harbor foreign interference with their traditional lifestyle, and view new trends in life, travel, education, technology, dress, fashion, housing, medicines, religion, and several others as unnecessary inconvenience.

There is such a rich culture in these Manyattas that have been preserved over the centuries.

You explore their traditions, the Manyattas, the arts and crafts, the Kraal, and the grazing field and traditional performances before retreating to the lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.

The highlight of the day: – The rewarding morning game drive in the wonderful Kidepo Valley National Park.

Accommodation:

  • Day visit to Ik community on Mount Morungole

Day 3 : Do Morning Game Drive And Fly Back To Entebbe.

wildlife safaris in Kidepo Valley National Park

Wildlife Safaris in Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley National Park is blessed by one annual wet season. If you visit the park during the long hot, dry season, you'll find the most consistent game viewing in the south of the park , in Narus Valley. During the hot, dry season, animals migrate south from the semi-arid Kidepo Valley to find greenery in the swamps and residue pools along the seasonal Narus channel. Game viewing in this region is richly rewarding.

The best game tracks in Kidepo include the Kakine, Katurum, and Nagusokopire game circuits , which meander around the Narus Valley, allowing tourists to explore the wildlife-rich areas of the valley. Kidepo Valley tracks are less rewarding than the Narus, but the Kidepo River is worth visiting.

The Kidepo River is a mysterious beauty fashioned with a seductive Borassus palm forest worth a drive-through. Here, you may see dry country species like the jackal, ostrich, secretary bird, and kudu. The river is completely dry most of the year, with a fifty-meter-wide course and a swathe of white sand.

About 18 mi north of Apoka on the Sudanese border, the Kanatarok hot springs are a common attraction among visitors. Although the low-key springs are worth visiting, they don't compare with the hot springs in Semliki National Park in western Uganda.

Best Time To Visit Kidepo Valley National Park cheetahs and big cats

Best Time To Visit Kidepo Valley

The best time to visit Kidepo Valley National Park is immediately after the rainy season in September, October, and November and through the long dry season from December to April . Kidepo has one rainy season between March and April and does not share the same weather conditions as the rest of Uganda; therefore, you'll likely find very few visitors any time of the year.

Uganda has two peak travel periods falling between December to February and June to August. If you're visiting Uganda during the peak season, the best time to add Kidepo to your Uganda safari would be during the driest months between December to February.

However, the seasons of April and August offer a mixture of dry and wet periods with a moderate number of visitors to Kidepo. Although spotting animals may be easier in the dry season, you'll still see a decent number of animals during these months.

Also, it's the best time for birding—easy to spot migratory birds. The wet season offers lush, green scenery and crisp air. Otherwise, the dry periods are very dusty on the game tracks.

Hiking Nature Walks in Kidepo

A nature walk is one of the enriching ways to explore Kidepo's wilderness pleasures . Kidepo Valley National Park offers two rewarding hiking & nature walks . The most popular one is the short three-mile guided walk through Narus Valley , which takes about two to three hours to walk. On this walk, visitors can experience the valley's wildlife abundance with the backdrop of striking landscapes. The Narus Valley trail is particularly recommended for birding.

For an extensive exploration of the park, take the nine-mile route that follows the ridgeline into the rugged slopes . Tourists can visit the gorgeous Borassus palm-covered Kidepo River valley and the Kanangorok hot springs on this trail.

Ike people - Immersive Cultural Encounters Around Kidepo Valley National Park

Immersive Cultural Encounters Around Kidepo Valley National Park

Uganda's northeast is home to two minor ethnic groups in Africa: the Ik and the Karamojong nomadic pastoralists , whose obsessive love for cattle rivals the Maasai in Tanzania and Kenya .

The Karamojong community is divided into six groups, each with its own dialect of the Nilotic Karamoja language. Two of these groups, the Napore and Nyangia, have forsaken mainly their traditional ways for an agriculture-based lifestyle, while a third, the Tueso, are hunter-gatherers who have moved from the dry plains into the mountains.

Don't miss the opportunity to explore the Karimojong clan villages within Kidepo Valley National Park, where you can witness fascinating cultural practices infused with dance and folklore. A short stopover at Nakapelimoru, the largest traditional village in East Africa, on the way from Moroto to Kidepo, provides a glimpse into the living culture and an opportunity to visit the largest cattle auction market in the region.

Nearby, the Ik people, with a population of about 10,000 people, struggles to preserve their unique culture and language. Hiking into the Morungole Mountains reveals the semi-arid valleys where Ik villages sprout like mushrooms. This remote community of subsistence farmers has kept to their traditional way of life, only traveling to the lowlands to trade grain.

So why not immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Kidepo Valley National Park and discover the unique traditions and practices of the local communities? It's an experience that will stay with you long after you return home from your African adventure.

about the lodge

On the edge of one of the most beautiful national parks in Uganda… Our latest and most remote property of Nature Lodges, Kidepo Savannah Lodge does justice to this wildlife gem which has received several international awards as one of the greatest Parks of Africa. Being just 500 mt away from Kalokudo gate, the lodge is literally on a stone’s throw from the park. It offers unparalled vistas of the expansive Narus Valley, Mount Morungole and the distant mountain ranges which form the border with Southern Sudan.

The lodge is inspired by the savannah surroundings, the grasslands, rocky outcrops, and … by the karamajong, the tribe with their typical manyattas and colorful blankets.

The lodge had to blend in rather than stick out, so we opted for a choice between the more luxurious self-contained safari tents and comfortable lazy camping tents.

ACCOMMODATION

Safari tent.

Kidepo Savannah Lodge boasts twelve beautifully appointed safari tents on raised decks. Each of the spacious tents have a private verandah offering splendid views of the mighty savannah. Comfortably furnished with 1 double or 2 single beds, all safari tents have an ensuite bathroom with 24 hours hot showers, running water for hand-basins and a flushing toilet.

kidepo safari

As a budget option, Kidepo Savannah Lodge offers 9 non-self-contained tents. These are comfortably furnished with 2 single or 1 double bed, a bedside table and a power outlet for charging your electrical equipment. The views into the park are vast and magnificent with an occasional herd of elephants or buffaloes passing by. The tents share a communal ablution block with hot showers and flushing toilets. No need to worry about linen as all bedding and towels are provided.

Restaurant & Bar

The thatched dining and bar area offer one of the finest views over the Park. The vistas stretching up to southern Sudan are just breathtaking but so are the starry skies. Away from the lightpollution that comes with civilization, you will be amazed of what is above us. From the wooden deck in front of our restaurant one can often witness the milky way like only National Geographics is able to catch.

Dinners are 4 course meals while during lunch 2 courses are served. Because everything on site runs off solar, including the fridges and freezers, we work with a fixed menu but if you have any dietary requirement we will be happy to cater for your request. Kindly let us know in time.

You are on your holiday so… breakfast, lunch and dinner have flexible times. We will adapt us to your time schedule, nothing too early; nothing too late.

Kidepo Valley National Park is one of those out of the ordinary places in East Africa.  A place as you might imagine Africa would be, but only better. Raw, remote, unspoiled and almost unvisited. The perfect place for your African adventure.

Kidepo Valley National park is located in the northeastern corner of Uganda. It is Uganda’s most isolated national park, but the few who make the long journey north through the wild frontier region of Karamoja would agree that it is also the most magnificent, for Kidepo ranks among Africa’s finest wildernesses.

There is nothing like taking a walk on the wild side. Explore the savannah by foot, accompanied by an armed guide you will venture along dry river beds, over rocky outcrops and through bush land to track the resident wildlife. Lamoj Mountains: Most of the hiking is conducted on Lamoj Mountains only a couple of kilometers from the Headquarters of the Park. This area is in the Narus Valley, a prime game viewing area Kidepo River Valley: Visitors may as well go to see the marvelous Kidepo River Valley. The river is dried out through the biggest part of the year. A stroll on its wide bed of white sand or in the barassus palm forest which feels like an oasis in the sahara, is a fascinating attraction.

A unique insight into the warrior tribe’s way of life. The name Karamojong is derived from a phrase meaning ‘the old men can walk no further’. Originally from Ethiopia, this tribe settled in the north east of Uganda. Related to the Maasai, this is a warrior nomad tribe for who, for generations, pride and status were cattle and for who cattle raids were the rule of the day. Since the disarmament however, things have calmed down. Cattle is still king, but subsistence farming has become a lot more common. A cultural visit to their manyatta, will give you an insight into this fascinating community, its culture and tradition.

The IK people are one of the original tribes and were here long before the Karamojong arrived. Initially they used to occupy areas of the current Kidepo Valley National Park but when their original home was declared a national park they were forced to move northwards to Mount Morungule. This brought extreme famine and the IK people had to adapt new practices and skills to forge their way of survival. They used subsistence farming, hunting and fruit gathering to overcome famine but were continuously raided by neighbours. Today, they are one of the smallest and most marginalized tribe in the country with an estimated total of 10,000 people. There are fears that this tribe might be on the verge to extinction but mere resistance has led to their continuous survival. Today, visitors are availed with an opportunity to visit Ik. This all day venture up and down steep mountains in some of the most stunning scenery, will give you a rare insight in the tribe, adds a bit of income to Ik’s community and helps to create some awareness.

Getting there

A bit of trouble or cost to get there but totally worth it. In the past, tribal warfare, cattle raids and very bad roads, have kept Kidepo Valley National Park isolated and unvisited. Fortunately, today, tables have turned. The park, however, remains a Lost Eden, a place everyone recommends but where few have been.

LODGE LOCATION Being just 500 mt away from Kalokudo gate, the lodge is literally on a stone’s throw from the Park and can be reached without paying park fees.

Latitude:  3.713723° //  Longitude: 33.669861°

About Mara Safari Lodge Kidepo - MSLK

Our name, Mara, is derived from the Ik dialect and means “How are you?” - a reflection of our commitment to the local community and culture.

Inspired by the endangered Ik tribe – one of Africa’s smallest ethnic groups with a surviving population of less than 10,000 that was displaced by the government in the 1960s to create space for the game park, our name Mara, despite having a universal connotation is short for Marang which in Ik dialect means “how are you?.” The Ik tribe – a hunter-gatherer community now lives in the Morungole mountains on the border with neighboring Kenya.
