Odyssey of the Seas Cruise Guide
Royal Caribbean is getting ready to launch Odyssey of the Seas, the first Ultra-Quantum class ship, that prepares to disrupt the industry. There hasn’t been much of a revelation on what will make the Odyssey different from the rest of the fleet. However, Royal has confirmed that the Odyssey will have a few signature attractions such as the RipCord by iFly skydiving simulator, the North Star capsule that takes you 300 feet above sea level for unbelievable views, and SeaPlex – the largest indoor active space at sea.
The Odyssey will sail for the first time in November 2020 from Fort Lauderdale where it will have a Caribbean Season, to later have a season in Greek Isles and the Mediterranean in May 2021.

We've analyzed cruise lines to find how much a cruise ship costs based on multiple criteria.
Included, you'll find ship cost by brand and per cabin to account for difference in ship size. We also explore the difference in the cost to build a cruise ship over time.
There's a clear trend in increasing ship cost by decade ! Additionally, we look at the total asset value by fleet and by holding company . It's truly amazing how the industry is so very consolidated!
To skip to any of the above mentioned analysis, feel free to use our quick links below.
- 1) Cruise Ship Cost to Build by Cruise Line
- 2) Average Cruise Ship Cost by Cabin
- 3) Cruise Ship Cost Increase Over Time
- 4) Cruise Ship Total Value by Cruise Company
- 5) All Cruise Ships Cost to Build
Don't get us wrong. A ship's price tag is just one consideration.
There are plenty of factors that come into play when searching for the perfect cruise. How new is the vessel? How big is it? What class does it belong to? What features does it have? And, of course, how much does a cruise ship cost ? We cover all of these in other blog posts. For now, we'll explore ship cost in depth.
How Much Does a Cruise Ship Cost to Build... by Line
Above, you'll find a graph showing the average cruise ship cost by cruise line . The chart shown represents the actual cost to build a cruise ship for the specific brands shown.
Which company spends the most per vessel? That would be Royal Caribbean! On average, RCCL writes a check for $669 million for each new ship!
This graph above gives us an idea of not just "cost," but also grandiosity. Royal's ships are the biggest and most costly.
To get a better idea of "value" as opposed to "price tag," you'll want to consider ship size . We're one step ahead! Check out the infographic below for average cost to build a cruise ship based on size. Specifically, we analyze cost verse number of staterooms.
How Much Does a Cruise Ship Cost to Build... by Cabin
This chart shows average cost by cruise cabin. That allows us to account for ship size and "normalize" the cost data. When buying an apartment building, you'd mostly like value it based on total number of units. Each apartment will command $X in rent. Similarly, each cruise cabin generates $Y in revenue.
It's no surprise that the smaller ships rise to the top. These brands are considered "premium lines." The drastic differences in price are obvious. Seabourn ships have cruise staterooms valued at more than 5x the cost of cabins on Pullmantur!
Why did we use cabins as a proxy for size ?
To get the most of this analysis, you'll want to compare ships with a similar quantity of cabins. Compare SAGA and Fred Olsen ships. The average roughly the same number of cabins per ship. SAGA spends over 2x the amount on a per cabin basis!
The data won't completely represent the full picture. Celebrity has massive ships carrying over 3k passengers and also the Xploration with a capacity of 16 cruisers! To avoid this issue you'll want to check out our complete list of ships by cost below.
Cruise Ship Cost Increase Over Time
We also looked at how much does a cruise ship cost to build today vs. in the past ? We expected an increase and were not disappointed! The chart below shows the average price tag of ships throughout the decades.
The blue bars show actual dollars spent. The green line depicts "cost in today's dollars." These figures were derived using an average inflation rate of 3.22%.
It's clear that prices have grown significantly ! Both in terms of actual dollars and inflation-adjusted costs.
Even with the current speed bump in the industry, we expect this to continue. Vessels are continuously adding capacity and extravagant (read "expensive") features. The average cost per cruise ship is quickly approaching one billion dollars !
Cruise Ship Total Value by Cruise Company
You may have counted almost 30 cruise brands included above. Don't be fooled . There aren't that many big cruise companies out there. The chart below is likely to surprise you. The list of cruise companies is much smaller. Two companies (Carnival & Royal Caribbean) own nearly 75% of the entire industry !
Many passengers have sailed Oceania or Cunard and had no clue they were owned by NCL or Carnival. It's always entertaining to hear a passenger make fun of "Carnival" as they proudly book their next Seabourn vacation. Carnival Corp. owns both brands!
These major cruise lines know what they're doing. They want to own every cruise passenger , whether they're cruise budget is $1,000 or $10,000!

Of course we had to include a list of the most expensive cruise ships ever built . Here are the Top 25 biggest price tags ever commanded by cruise ships. The "billion+ dollar club" is a significant portion of the list.

Inside Look: Odyssey of the Seas Revealed
It’s about the adventure on royal caribbean’s newest ship. here’s what’s in store come..
Odyssey of the Seas is packed with showstopping entertainment and immersive activities.
Credit: Royal Caribbean
Royal Caribbean is setting the stage for the boldest adventure to sail both sides of the Atlantic with the new Odyssey of the Seas . The first Quantum Ultra Class ship to sail in North America will be the latest iteration of the groundbreaking, high-tech Quantum Class —which unveiled cruise industry firsts like the Bionic Bar and the North Star , a glass observation capsule that takes guests more than 300 feet above the ocean for 360-degree views. No one in the family will want to miss the thrills in store, combining the best of Quantum Class with bigger and bolder experiences, only found on Odyssey .
Odyssey will up the ante on vacations with a whole new look to match an action-packed top deck—including the largest indoor activity center at sea —game-changing entertainment and dining inspired by flavors from around the world. Now, imagine all that set against the backdrop of the Caribbean when the ship debuts in North America.
Read on for some of the coolest features and experiences on board Odyssey , so you can get ready to book the vacation your family and friends will talk about for years to come.
From bumper cars to the FlowRider surf simulator, you have plenty of adventures to choose from on Odyssey.
We guarantee you’ve never experienced this much action in one place: Catch a wave on the guest-favorite FlowRider surf simulator; take flight with Ripcord by iFly , a skydiving experience that gives the rush of free falling; or scale the 40-foot-tall rock wall for an epic view of the ocean. You’ll also have a bird’s-eye view of the idyllic destinations you’ll visit, from George Town, Grand Cayman to our private island destination, Perfect Day at CocoCay , thanks to the North Star—which happens to be in the Guinness Book of World Records for “Highest Viewing Deck on a Cruise Ship!”
At SeaPlex, you’ll find a full-sized sports court, trapeze school, VR games upstairs and the only bumper cars at sea.
Next-Level SeaPlex
One of Odyssey ’s most exciting features is the largest indoor activity space at sea—and this one’s on a whole other level: SeaPlex is where the whole crew can have a blast. Adrenaline junkies can feed their need for speed while dodging and dashing their way across a full-sized sports court in the only bumper cars at sea, soar from the trapeze and play interactive VR games. The space will also double as a glow-in-the-dark laser tag arena, pitting Yetis and Snowshifters against each other as they battle for survival and control of the mythical ice city in Clash for the Crystal City .
Want to catch some on-screen action and root for the home team? Head upstairs to SeaPlex’s second floor for a front-row seat at the ultimate Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade . The elevated views give you the chance to catch the competition below while tuning in to the big games on TV or playing arcade game classics, trivia, tournaments and pool. For a snack between adventures, refuel with buffalo wings, sliders and the signature Playmakers Burger, along with ice-cold brews.
Soak up the sun from a relaxing in-pool lounger on Odyssey.
Upgraded Downtime
Soak up the sun—and the island vibes—on the pool deck. With two resort-style pools and four whirlpools, plenty of fun for kids and where adults can unwind, there’s something for all ages. The youngest of travelers can get soaked at Splashaway Bay , an aqua park that boasts waterslides, fountains, water cannons and more, while adults can head to the Solarium , a relaxing retreat with swimming pools, whirlpools, a full-service bar, daybeds and hidden nooks. There are a variety of ways to enjoy this hot spot: Grab a casita, hammock or in-pool lounger and enjoy a beach read (and a cocktail!) by day, or enjoy entertainment under the stars by night.
Pro tip: Be sure to try a cocktail from The Lime & Coconut , snack on Mexican street fare from El Loco Fresh and catch the live music, too .
By day, Two70 offers expansive ocean views thanks to a 270-degree, floor-to-ceiling wall of windows. At night, the venue transforms into a multimedia theater that showcases entertainment with high-tech video projection, Roboscreens and aerialist performers.
Teched-Out Entertainment
As the sun sets, the curtain rises on new, unrivaled entertainment. Leading the way is Two70 , where guests are treated to mesmerizing shows that not only feature some of the most talented singers, dancers and aerialists but also immersive technology and unparalleled special effects. Two—or technically seven—of the most striking features in this space are the signature Vistarama, which transforms the 270-degree panoramic windows into a seamless projection surface for spectacular digital imagery, and six agile Roboscreens that create scenes as they gracefully soar, twist and dance.
Pro tip: Two70 also houses a gourmet café that’s open during the day. Be sure to grab a bite and take in the gorgeous, sunlit views of the ocean!
That’s not the only entertainment in store: Snag front-row seats at the Royal Theater , where you can take in full-scale original productions and renowned Broadway shows. The dance floor is also calling at Music Hall , a guest-favorite and signature Royal Caribbean venue with a roster of incredible cover bands and an always-revolving setlist of hit after hit. Sip a cocktail at one of two bars, jam out songs you know and love, enjoy the tunes from the lounge seating or head to the pool tables.
Guests can enjoy the “Sunday supper” experience at Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar, serving classic Italian dishes with a contemporary flair.
Credit: ROYAL CARIBBEAN
International Flavors
When it’s time to eat, get ready to be wowed. Odyssey will introduce Teppanyaki —the first time this venue will make its debut in North America—serving authentic Far East cuisine in the traditional Japanese hibachi style. The menu comes together as expert chefs cook fresh seafood and top-grade steaks at the table.
Italian enthusiasts will love Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar , which will serve up classics with a contemporary flair—from hand-tossed pizzas to a mouthwatering station of cured meats and specialty cheeses—as well as an impressive selection of wines and limoncellos.
Pro tip: Don’t forget to check out some of our most popular restaurants and dishes, including Izumi’s sushi and sashimi, hand-cut steaks at Chops Grille , an epicurean experience at Chef’s Table and Wonderland’s chocolate dessert ball (it melts before your eyes with caramel sauce!).
The next iteration of our award-winning Adventure Ocean kids program provides children of all ages with immersive, hands-on experiences. Hangout, pictured above, gives kids ages 6 to 10 the space to let loose and lounge with gaming consoles, foosball and more.
Fun for All Ages
Even the tiniest of travelers will be encouraged to play outside the lines at the new Adventure Ocean , our award-winning kids program. Children and their families can choose their own immersive adventures and discover whimsical rooms with climbable creations at Play Place; hands-on art, science and tech fun at Workshop; friendly competition in physical, interactive games at Arena; and make new friends over gaming consoles or while just sitting back in Hangout. The area will also feature a dedicated AO Babies for babies and tots, plus, experiential activities at the multipurpose AO Junior area specially designed for 3- to 5-year-olds.
Social180, an exclusive venue for teens, lets them relax and make friends over movies, music and games, plus a dedicated patio that’s the largest in our fleet.
Teens ages 13 to 17 years old will have hip, cool spaces of their own, too, with the introduction of Social180—located just outside SeaPlex, right in the heart of it all. They’ll be free to take on the competition at SeaPlex or chill with the latest gaming consoles, music and movies in their own lounge or out on the private patio.
Odyssey will be the first Quantum Ultra Class ship to visit Willemstad, Curacao and Oranjestad, Aruba when the ship begins sailing from South Florida.
Seasonal Adventure
In the Caribbean, guests will have as much to do on shore as they will on board Odyssey : Top shore excursions will include snorkeling through the tropical reefs of Cozumel, Mexico and digging in to the local cuisine of Oranjestad, Aruba . (Fun fact: Along with Willemstad, Curacao, Oranjestad is a brand-new destination for Quantum Ultra Class ships). In 2022, when Odyssey heads to Rome, Italy, don’t miss your chance to marvel at the beauty and history of the idyllic isles of the Mediterannean, including Rhodes, Santorini and Mykonos, Greece and Limassol, Cyprus.
Your greatest adventure awaits on Odyssey of the Seas . Book your once-in-a-lifetime experience on Royal Caribbean’s newest ship here .

mv Aegean Odyssey Review
Review of mv aegean odyssey.
The 1973-built MV Aegean Odyssey cruise ship was last operated/chartered by Voyages to Antiquity (2009-founded one-ship company). The liner was originally built as a ferry (Zim ro-ro ferry Narcis) and in 1988 converted to a cruise vessel. Its second major drydock refit/reconstruction was in 2010.
NEWS: In late-August 2019 was announced that Aegean Odyssey will be 3-year chartered to Road Scholar (fka Elderhostel). The 1975-founded, Boston MA -headquartered nonprofit organization specializes in study tours (throughout Canada and USA) with 5500+ educational programs which are geared mainly to older travellers. The ship is currently under charter by Road Scholar for cruises (educational voyages) scheduled between March 2020 and March 2023.
History - construction and ownership
The 388-passenger liner Aegean Odyssey is a classically elegant vessel offering its passengers a relaxed travel atmosphere and high level of personalized service.
In early-August 2019, the ship charterer Voyages to Antiquity (one of the industry's small cruise lines ) officially announced that the company ceases operations at the end of October (2019). Earlier in 2019, Voyages to Antiquity was forced to cancel ten Aegean Odyssey cruises due to engine problems . 2019's final 4 voyages remained on schedule. In a letter, Jos Dewing (company's Managing Director) said:
“Since the announcement [of chartering the ship] was made, the executive management at Voyages to Antiquity has been looking at various alternative options to continue the company and serve our loyal clients. However, this process was severely impacted by the unforeseeable engine failure that occurred in April this year, forcing the company to cancel most of our remaining 2019 summer cruises. While we are pleased to advise that the ship has now been fully repaired and that the final four cruises of the 2019 season will go ahead as scheduled, this serious issue has had an impact on the future plans for Voyages to Antiquity and repairing the ship has been the absolute priority for management and the focus of the company during this difficult period. It is therefore with regret that we have taken the difficult decision to close Voyages to Antiquity at the end of October 2019, at which point our office in Oxford will also close. It is very much business as normal until this point and we have staff answering calls and supporting those passengers still traveling with us in 2019."
Decks and Cabins
MV Aegean Odyssey staterooms (198 total) are in 14 grades, of which 6x are Suites, 42x Balconies, and 41x Inside cabins. During drydock 2013 were created 18 new outside cabins (on Lido Deck). Of the existing staterooms, 57 were rebuilt, and 80 more were reconfigured into 40 balcony cabins.
The boat has 9 decks , of which 7 are passenger-accessible and 4 with cabins.
Shipboard facilities and amenities
The open-seating Marco Polo Restaurant is the main dining room aboard Aegean Odyssey. The Terrace Café features a combination of outdoor and indoor seating, with Mediterranean sophisticated interior design, as well as cooking on the open grill. In the evenings, the Tapas recreates the informal atmosphere of a bistro with delicious seafood paella and a wide range of Italian pizzas.
The Observation Lounge and Piano Bar are situated on the Observation Deck and feature unforgettable views on all sides. In this area, wireless Internet connection is offered. During the 2013 refit, the Athena Health Spa was moved several levels lower. Other amenities include the Lido Bar (2-deck), Ambassador Lounge, Charleston Lounge, Fitness Studio & Gym (featuring free daily sunrise classes), Beauty Salon, library, boutique, pool and Internet Centre.
Itineraries
Aegean Odyssey itinerary program is based on the Canary Islands and Mediterranean cruises departing from Civitavecchia-Rome , Venice , Athens , Istanbul , as well as Asia cruises sailing out of Singapore . Aegean Odyssey is perfectly suited for cruising to the smallest Mediterranean inlets that larger cruise ships can’t reach. She also navigates the great Asian rivers, including Saigon and Yangon, as well as Guadalquivir River in Spain.

mv Aegean Odyssey Wiki
MS Aegean Odyssey was the only liner operated by Voyages to Antiquity (2009-founded small cruise company ). The vessel was originally built as Ro-Ro cruiseferry Narcis (converted to a cruise ship in 1988). It was built under yard number 617. Its construction started on June 18, 1971. The vessel was launched (floated out from drydock) on June 18, 1972, and delivered to Zim Navigation on August 22, 1973.
In 2010, the ship was renamed "Aegean Odyssey" following an extensive drydock-refit project done in Ermoupoli (on Syros Island, Greece) . Vessel's passenger capacity was reduced from 570 to 400, in order to provide larger cruise staterooms. During the refurbishment, the cinema was replaced with a lecture hall and also new dining venues were added. The inaugural cruise for Voyages to Antiquity departed on April 30, 2010. This best-ever deal saves you $1,200 on a gaming monitor that is "exceptionally immersive, perhaps even more so than the Odyssey Neo G9"
T he Samsung Odyssey Ark is one of the biggest and curviest gaming monitors around. But to get those specs, you've usually had to pay a whopping $3,000. That's no longer the case, thanks to an Amazon deal that slashes 40% off the Samsung Odyssey Ark , bringing the price to $1,799.99.
Late last year, you could get the first-generation Samsung Odyssey Ark for $1,799.99. Now, you can get the second- generation Samsung Odyssey Ark for $1,799.99 . The newer monitor has a built-in KVM switch and improved Multi View Mode. It's now also down to its best price ever.
Samsung Odyssey Ark (55-inch) | was $2,999.99 now $1,799.99 at Amazon
This massive gaming monitor has a 1000R curvature to immerse you in games or media. The device's 55-inch 4K screen has a 165Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time, and supports AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and HDR 10+.
🔎 Alternate deal: Gen 1 Samsung Odyssey Ark (55-inch): $1,699.99 at Walmart View Deal
Samsung Odyssey Ark review highlights
The Samsung Odyssey Ark is a unique gaming monitor. It features a massive 55-inch display that can be used horizontally or rotated into "cockpit" mode.
When our colleagues at TechRadar reviewed the Samsung Odyssey Ark , they looked at the first generation of the device. The second-gen Odyssey Ark has some notable improvements, such as a built-in KVM switch, an improved Samsung Multi View mode, a DisplayPort 1.4 connection. But the screens of the first and second-gen Odyssey Ark have the same specs, so I'll focus on TechRadar's thoughts on the monitor's display.
"If you want a gaming experience that envelops your entire field of view, then the Samsung 55-inch Odyssey Ark monitor is the best in the business," said TechRadar's Joel Burgess. The review went on to say:
"All these technical capabilities combine with a 600nit typical brightness to create a bright and vibrant display that looks stunning when you fire up a game in full screen. We were initially a little apprehensive about a 68cm tall screen on our desktop, especially given the unfavorable reception of curved televisions a few years ago. For media and games on a monitor however, this format is exceptionally immersive, perhaps even more so than the Odyssey Neo G9, which is something we thought couldn’t be improved on."
That's high praise for a device that promises an immersive experience for the best PC games .
How curvature is measured
When it comes to tech, bigger numbers are generally better. You want a CPU with the highest Geekbench score, a monitor with the highest resolution and framerate, and a mouse with the highest DPI (assuming your budget isn't a factor). But when it comes to monitor curvature, one could argue that a lower number is better.
Monitor curvature is listed with a number followed by the letter R. That figure indicates how large of a circle would be formed if the monitor continued with its curvature until meeting itself. Another way to look at it is if you placed several of the same monitor side-by-side, a monitor with a 1500R curvature would make a 1.5-meter circle while a monitor with an 1800R curvature would form a 1.8-meter circle.
The best curvature for your setup depends on how you plan to use your monitor. The Samsung Odyssey Ark has a 1000R curvature, which is much more curved than most monitors on the market. The dramatic curve increases immersion, but you almost feel surrounded by the screen. Generally speaking, I'd say the Odyssey Ark is great for gaming if you have the space but is not a great device for browsing the web or using Microsoft Office.
Virgin Voyages cruise deal offers a month on board with Caribbean season pass
Travelers can make a cruise ship in the Caribbean their floating vacation home this summer.
Virgin Voyages is launching a Summer Season Pass on its Valiant Lady ship, allowing guests to sail six back-to-back cruises over the course of a month at a discounted price. The adults-only cruise line added the Caribbean option after seeing high demand for its season passes in the Mediterranean on Resilient Lady and Scarlet Lady earlier this year. The offers are aimed at remote workers who want a change of scenery – though you don’t have to be working to take advantage.
“We heard from travelers in North America who wanted the option to sail the stunning Caribbean and stay a bit closer to home while working in a similar time zone,” a Virgin Voyages spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
What are the terms of the Caribbean Summer Season Pass?
Passengers have the option to take their month at sea in June, July, August or September. Each option includes six back to back cruises over the following dates:
- June 7-July 5
- July 5-Aug. 2
- Sept. 4-Oct. 1
Destinations include Key West, Florida; Bimini in the Bahamas; Costa Maya, Mexico, Grand Turk in Turks and Caicos and more, though stops vary by itinerary.
Cruise booking tips: There's more to it than picking your travel dates
How much does the Caribbean Summer Season Pass cost?
The pass starts at $12,000 for up to two guests, a 25% discount compared to purchasing the cruises separately. Passholders will be booked in Central Sea Terrace cabins and get wash and fold laundry service, two specialty coffees per day, premium Wi-Fi and other perks.
Travelers can book online .

Post-pandemic demand for travel appears unstoppable, with Europe’s biggest holiday company revealing record revenue for the first three months of 2024.
A total of 2.8 million customers paid an average of 3 per cent more for their holidays in the quarter compared with a year earlier, taking revenue to €3.6bn (£3.1bn).
The Canary Islands and Egypt were the most popular package holiday destinations between January and March, with demand for Cape Verde – the Portuguese-speaking archipelago off the west coast of Africa “increasing further”.
Demand was particularly strong for Tui ’s cruise ships. The average daily rate rose by one-fifth to €221 (£190), while the number of empty cabins fell by three-quarters; on average 49 out of 50 are filled on the company’s vessels.
The quarterly loss fell by 22 per cent to €189m (£162m); Tui traditionally loses money in winter.
With planes flying 93 per cent full, the prediction for the full financial year is that profits will rise by 25 per cent.
Bookings for the summer are 5 per cent higher than 2023, with prices 4 per cent higher despite increasing competition from online travel agents and easyJet’s holiday operation.
“Travelling is very popular,” said Tui’s chief executive, Sebastian Ebel. “We are seeing high demand for package holidays , in particular.”
The company’s results statement said: “Tui continues to closely monitor geopolitical events, particularly in the Middle East and on the Arabian Peninsula.
“Should the situation or customer demand change, the Group’s business model allows it to flexibly shift capacity from the Eastern to the Western Mediterranean.”
The company would, if necessary, shift some of its flights from Turkey to Spain.
But the Tui announcement came hours after a leading tourism figure on the Spanish island of Mallorca said a “strategic plan” was needed to tackle overtourism .
The Majorca Daily Bulletin reports that Maria Frontera, president of the Mallorca Hoteliers’ Federation, said the Balearic Islands are “in a critical situation”.
“Seeking a balance of coexistence between residents and visitors has long been an issue on these islands,” she said.
Tui insists it “operates organised package tourism that does not impact local living spaces”.
