Tourism in Pakistan, Challenges and Opportunities

The tourism sector in Pakistan has tremendous potential and is linked to some of the tallest mountains, lakes, and natural sceneries in the country, and it is a well-liked attraction for visitors from both inside and outside the nation. In addition to generating cash, tourism also helps to promote a particular country's culture; hence, it should be seen as an essential component of Pakistan's growth plan. The diversity of its cultures, civilizations, and customs has tragically prevented Pakistan from realising its full tourism potential. To become the most well-liked tourist destination in the world, Pakistan would have to overcome several difficulties in the tourism industry. This essay examines the difficulties the tourism industry faces using research from Pakistan. According to the report, Pakistan's security and counterterrorism issues have negatively impacted travel and tourism. But it is now generally acknowledged that Pakistan is transforming into a welcoming and secure environment for everyone. This essay also includes explanations of suggestions for the tourist industry.

Cultural tourism in pakistan.

This research study examined the state of cultural tourism in Pakistan as well as the consequences of cultural tourism with detail were also explored. The prospects for promoting tourism in the country as well as challenges faced in this regard were also been studied in this article. The current study also discussed the strategies which may be used for the betterment and promotion of tourism. The study was done by using the qualitative content analysis technique. The study is concluded as that Pakistan has a vast range of prospects for cultural, religious, adventures, and other types of tourism in the country and can be promoted by using the heritage of ancient times as well as medieval periods. The archeological archaeological perspectives (material and non-material cultural aspects) of ancient and medieval societies are the heritage of Pakistan and it may be used for the promotion of tourist activities in the country. The study also presented a view that international as well as domestic tourists have to face number of difficulties and challenges which must be addressed and resolved on priority bases. The departments and authorities concerned with the tourism industry must address difficulties faced by tourists and has to resolve the issue on priority bases.

Traveling is still revolving around the meaningful human interaction, among people, stakeholders, and the tourists. These tourists visit to sites through the travelers as technological advancement proves to be facilitative than creating impediments. The incident of evocative development of change in the traveling around the globe is because of increase businesses interdependence and the client’s adoption of technologies. It is also meeting the expectations of tourists and improving operational efficiencies. Further the movement of the tourism industry is continuous with the increase use of technology where commentators have categorized this transformative power in various categories. From the availability of the Internet to the digital divide and provisions of online cabs, there are compelling arguments about the presence of such amenities that boost the services of technology for exploring avenues in the tourism sector. As technology and tourism are accelerating in the same stride, their services can develop a shifting impact on many important facades of developing countries. In this regard, the well-thought-out study while using technology in tourism industry in Pakistan employed survey approach to deepening the knowledge about role of tourism in integrating resources and exchange services. The approach used is convenient for searching power tools of completing the tourism destinations. It shows the application of effective scientific knowledge of technology that is influential in maintaining the tourism discord. However, the challenges reflect those disparities are still existing in excess of the technology-based services, operative use of informatics, and the skills pertaining to computing devices. The potential of tourism industry in Pakistan is acknowledged and well supported by reputable organizations/stakeholders connected with this industry. It is recommended that employing the technological tools in the industry would be a positive use in tourism sector would be positive recipient for actors and services belongs to the industry. This will also reshape the digital tools and their valuable services for reducing the challenges of the hospitality and integration of technology into the tourism sector.

Since the war on terror initiated in 2001 after the attack on the Twin Towers, situated in New York, United States. Since then Pakistan has been a victim of terrorism and religious extremism due to its strategic alliance with the United States of America. One industry that was completely obliterated by this situation was Pakistan’s Tourism industry. The objective of this research was to prove whether societal factors affect the tourism industry or cultural factors affect the tourist industry or the law and order situation has hampered the tourists’ activities in Northern areas of Pakistan. Developing a questionnaire and validating its reliability, statistical techniques proved that cultural factors had a more significant impact on Pakistan’s tourist mindset.

Tourism, a multidimensional business activity, was grown to be a multi trillion $ industry worldwide. Its relevance to country's economic, services, and employment generation performance is vitally recognized all over across the globe. However, in Pakistan, despite its promising potential, the state of tourism affairs is dismal. The paper attempts to diagnose the causes of crawling nature of Pakistan's tourism growth on empirical grounds and suggest ways and means to develop the industry through an optimum use of its natural, historical and cultural resources. Pakistan is an agricultural country having tourism as an another potentially proliferated industry that can be a game changer for the state. Pakistan has many prominent cultural, traditional, spiritual and entertainment places throughout the country that serve as a good opportunity for potential profits. Although, the denizens of the country are steadily moving their interests towards the field of tourism, that does not alleviate the underlying problems in this industry. Unfortunately, due to weak policy and decision making in this field, people related to tourism industry have to face several problems with each having its own cause and effect. The major effects are loss of generated revenue due to tourist activities and a soft image of the country among foreign countries. However, with an effective and well thought out process, it is possible to devise a policy that could be beneficial for the country’s tourism industry. Therefore, this report aims to discuss the three basic rules of reforming any sector including thinking ahead, thinking again and thinking across in order to propose and evaluate a set of effective policy alternatives using certain assessment criteria such as equity, efficiency, welfare, security, liberty, legal feasibility and implementation that could help in the development of the Pakistan tourism industry.

Key findings

The findings illustrated that although Pakistan has potential to earn revenues and repute through its tourism since it has tourist attractions in nearly every part of the country, yet very little attention was given towards the promotion of tourism in Pakistan. Moreover, the poor tourism policy created many problems for local as well as the foreign tourists. According to the survey results, 87% of the respondents reported that they would rather not prefer to visit Sibbi because of improper infrastructure and security issues. However, when the same respondents were given an option to visit Sibbi provided with security from the army and facility of good hotels, around 81% of the respondents responded positively. The analysis further identified some of the significant problems related to tourism in Punjab including fear of being robbed, inadequate transportation facilities, downfall of electricity, gas or telephone signals at many tourist resorts and the road blockages in winters. However, in case of the walled city of Lahore, despite issues of security, cleanliness and encroachments, people liked to visit from all over the country due to the effective communication and marketing campaigns run by the walled city department. In addition to that, the results highlighted a set of causes behind the inefficient system of Pakistan tourism industry including non-exploration of new areas that ultimately hinders the potential growth of economy through tourism, lack of professionals having significant knowledge and skills to run this industry effectively, lack of educational institutions offering courses or degrees in tourism, insufficient planning in the transportation sector, monopolies of locals, in far rural and serene areas, in terms of transportation, accommodation, and food which results in less efficient use of resources, abundant trips to northern areas of Pakistan, inefficient and ineffective use of funds and resources, lack of strict check and balance to ensure the implementation of tourism policy and the conventional mentality of locals that tourism will bring an end to the traditional values and bring in modernity. Besides this, the findings introduced certain policy actors that could influence the policy process including government, owners of the resorts, transport operators, local residents of tourist spots, travel agents/tour operators, attraction suppliers providing tourism related accessories and products to the tourists, trade and industry associations, food and drinks suppliers, political party in charge, bureaucrats, media, tourists, foreign aid givers, NGOs, law enforcement agencies, travel guides and terrorists. Furthermore, it was found that leaving the tourism industry unattended or running it in a traditional way would not be beneficial for the economy of the country in the long-run. Therefore, the study proposed significant policy alternatives for the development of Pakistan tourism industry in the broader context including regular update in the policy, tax relief, creating awareness and marketing tourism, exposure to tourism in academics, continuous training of the related professionals/authorities, better and safe infrastructure and no action analysis. However, there were trade-offs between different alternatives. According to the Policy Delphi results, effectiveness was found to be the most important criteria for assessing a policy about tourism. Similarly, it was found that a policy must ensure an increase in the overall quality of the situation of tourism in the country. This would be evident when the annual number of local and foreign tourists increases due to better facilities (including infrastructure, increased security, and more promotion etc.), therefore, better and safe infrastructure was found to be the best policy option. Consecutively, introducing chapters related to tourism in the syllabus and regularly updating the existing tourism policy would further enhance the effectiveness. Moreover, providing tax rebate on tourism related equipment and training the officials were also found to be important alternatives that would lead to an increase in overall effectiveness, whereas, no-action analysis would halt the effectiveness of this process, hence, it was found to be the most ineffective alternative.

Implications

The study suggests that marketing and promoting the countrywide tourism are less time-consuming strategies and can produce results in a very short time. However, this action plan will act like a fad or a come-and-go trend since if these tourist attractions are marketed through different platforms, the tourist traffic will keep on increasing but if we discontinue promotions, or these promotions get obsolete, they will no longer produce the desired results. Therefore, in order to get continuous results, an effective marketing strategy should be implemented to ensure whether the alternative is producing results. A monitoring and evaluation framework could be used for this purpose. The variables to evaluate the impacts could be the reach of the promotions, percentage change in tourist traffic and tourists’ engagement etc. Furthermore, tax rebate for the investors to invest in tourism industry can be another short-term policy plan. Although it would be beneficial for the investors and for uplifting this industry, but this could not be practiced over the long-run since taxes are the main source of income for the state. Therefore, improving infrastructure and securing it by law enforcement agencies can be the most important long tem action plan that should be included in the tourism policy of Pakistan. In addition to that, although it would cost a lot to provide better roads and accommodations etc., but it will pay back in the long run, therefore, immediate and special emphasis should be given on improving the infrastructure related to the places of tourism in Pakistan. Furthermore, the results of this action plan can be measured by measuring per annum tourist traffic in Pakistan, new hotels opening in these areas, and number of tourists visiting Baluchistan and Sindh. Similarly, training the related professionals would produce the desired results in the long-run, therefore, the authorities need to train the existing officials who lack the required amount of training due to which many of the opportunities to increase tourism in the country go to waste. If trained properly and continuously, these people would act like a backbone to the industry. In a nutshell, all that is needed is to redefine and update the existing tourism policy is in best of interests of the nation. By formulating effective policies, Pakistan can earn huge revenues which will eventually lead towards economic stability. Moreover, there should be a proper system of monitoring and evaluation of the implemented policies to determine the success or failure. Through this, the tourism industry of Pakistan will not only be able compete with similar industries of other countries, but also reach the zenith of fame and profitability.

President Xi Jinping has called for efforts to promote high-quality development of the tourism sector to accelerate the building of China into a country strong in tourism and bolster economic growth.

Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks in an instruction on work related to the tourism sector.

He pointed out that significant progress has been made in China's tourism development, saying that the nation's tourism industry has entered the fast lane, becoming the world's largest domestic tourism market, the country with the largest number of outbound tourists, and a major destination for international tourists.

The country's tourism sector has evolved from being small and weak to becoming an emerging strategic pillar industry, he said.

Xi said that in the new era and on the new journey, tourism development faces new opportunities and challenges in China.

He underlined the need to improve modern tourism systems and accelerate the building of China into a country strong in tourism.

Li Shulei, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, read out Xi's instruction at the National Tourism Development Conference, which was held in Beijing on Friday.

Addressing the conference, Li emphasized the need to deeply study and implement Xi's instructions and statements on tourism development and promote the integrated development of tourism and culture.

Efforts should be made to focus on systematic and scientific planning, strengthen cultural heritage protection and ecological conservation, improve market supply and tourism services, and deepen international tourism exchanges and cooperation in order to create new prospects for the country's tourism development, he said.

The consumption of services related to culture and tourism has become a pivotal pillar for stabilizing the Chinese economy.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism issued a plan in November to boost domestic tourism, with a focus on offering a more diversified array of tourism products.

The China Tourism Academy estimated that domestic tourism will see remarkable growth both in visitor numbers and revenue in 2024.

According to a report released by the academy in January, China will see domestic visits reaching over 6 billion and tourism-related revenue exceeding 6 trillion yuan ($828 billion) in 2024. The confident prediction is based on the good recovery of supply chains of tourism services and the tourism economy in 2023.
