Awesome performance!

Elder is an amazing band. They play 10+ minute progressive rock songs with the skill of lifelong musicians - never missing a beat. They expertly bring their audience along the most crooked paths and unfamiliar turns their songs take.

They also have a very distinct sound. It's crunchy, ruthless and massive. A lot of bands sound different live than they do on their records. Elder, on the other hand, sounds like Elder.

Playing songs from their last three albums, Elder game me a night I'll remember fondly for years to come.

Thanks guys!

I went to see them live on 18th of May, 2019 in Oslo. They played in a rather small club, that barely fits 300 people. The first thing I noticed was that Matt Couto was selling merchandise to fans and Nick DiSalvo just running around, grabbing some drinks. Jack Donovan was the most vivid on the scene, but everyone contributed with their awesomeness.

They kicked a*s! If you're into Elder and still haven't seen them live - you should definitely do it!

First off, Club Red was such a cool venue. Super intimate and up close, I got to really see every musician up close. All four bands sounded phenomenal, Elder was out of this world, and the best part was I got to talk to each band and they were all such cool, down to earth people. Can’t wait see Elder again and come back to Club Red!

That was an incredible experience!

Perfect sound, maybe just a tiny bit too loud, but crystal clear.

Awesome performance by both Elder and Ancestors and an amazing immersive atmosphere. Elder didn't play some of their biggest hits to my disappointment but was a great show nonetheless.

Elder was way fucking cooler than our shitty little unwelcoming city showed. Hopefully one bad experience won't keep Elder from coming back to Charlotte, NC and ripping our faces off us. Easily one of my favorite shows I've ever been to.

Ever since I first heard Dead Roots Stirring I wanted to see Elder live. It was definitely worth it. If you like the studio versions of their songs, the live version will blow you away. King Buffalo was the perfect opener.

Every time I see them, they get better and better. These guys are just pushing the limits of awesome. They played a couple of old goodies and a couple of new ones. All around a good mix ending with an encore of Gemini.

Elder to Embark on Summer 2022 North American Tour

The heavy prog-psych rockers will be joined by Ruby the Hatchet, Belzebong, and Dreadnought on select dates

Elder to Embark on Summer 2022 North American Tour

Elder have announced a summer North American tour, marking the heavy prog-psych rockers’ first extensive outing on the continent in roughly three years.

They’ll be joined by Ruby the Hatchet , Belzebong , and Dreadnought on select dates. The trek kicks off August 3rd in Brooklyn, New York, and runs through September 10th in Boston (Ruby the Hatchet and Dreadnought will open the first leg, with Belzebong replacing the former for the second leg). An appearance at the Psycho Las Vegas Thursday pool party on August 18th highlights the run for Elder.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased via Ticketmaster .

“For a band like Elder that normally spends about half of every year on the road, the past few years have been hard on us — but have far from broken our spirit,” commented guitarist/singer Nick DiSalvo in a press release. “We’ve been productive, making new records and preparing for a triumphant return. Our upcoming US run has been a long time coming, having not been back since selected shows in 2019!”

He added: “We’ve been massively looking forward to both performing tracks from our last album Omens live (for the first time since its release!) alongside older tracks from the Elder universe, revamped and reworked for maximum sonic immersion. Looking forward to seeing you out there!”

Elder will certainly have a wealth of fresh material to draw from for their setlist. Since playing those of shows in 2019 that DiSalvo mentioned, the band has released The Gold & Silver Sessions EP (2019), the full-length Omens (2020), and a collaborative record with Kadavar entitled ELDOVAR – A Story of Darkness & Light (2021).

Young@Heart swings in for Granfalloon, with elders performing rock in innovative ways

Young@Heart members sing and shout during one of their performances. On June 7, 2024, the group will perform at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater as part of this year's Granfalloon events.

A world-touring company of rocking elders began as a casual sing-along at a Massachusetts meal site for the elderly. That was 1982; since then, The New York Times, Time magazine, The Tonight Show, Sunday Morning and CBS have praised them — The Young@Heart Chorus . Now, they've done more than 55 national and international tours, and they're coming to Bloomington's Granfalloon Festival June 7 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater.

Edie Falco, Steve Buscemi, Larry David, Paul Shaffer and John Berman of CNN either helped or appeared with the multi-racial Young@Heart chorus during the pandemic, as the group created five virtual shows. Now that they're performing live again, the chorus continues releasing videos of their stage shows for fans throughout the world.

Punk is one of their strongest genres

These senior citizen singers aged 75-94 say they shudder at punk rock. Robert Climan, who cofounded the group with then pianist Judith Sharpe, disagrees. "Punk is one of their best genres," he said over the phone.

In fact, some of their strongest songs are ones they resisted.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Part of Granfalloon's creative-aging theme, these northeastern elders stomp, croon, sing and dance to a six (or more) piece band consisting of "some of the best players in our region," according to Climan.

The elder singers do not use sheet music for performances; they memorize it.

In addition to the band and the two co-directors, there are a board of directors, staff members and an advisory board.

Young@Heart's video snags Emmy for its co-director

The group celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2022, and the video of that live performance, which they produced themselves, appeared on PBS channels in New York State. It also grabbed a New England Emmy for co-conductor, Julia van IJken, who created and edited the video.

In 2018, they were asked to record a song for an E*Trade Super Bowl ad.

Passing their time, not passing before their time

Members rehearse every week, and concerts go on no matter the weather. Touring can be difficult even for young people, but Climan, who is also the  chorus' artistic and executive director, said they're used to — and actually dig — the flights and road trips. As their promotional material puts it, they advocate for "joyfully passing your time instead of passing before your time."

Member John Rinehart will be 89 this fall. When he retired from working as a registered nurse, he told his wife this: "We may as well plan my funeral."

But then along came Young@Heart.

After Rinehart had been a Young@Heart-er for only two months, Climan persuaded the then 74-year-old Rinehart to join that year's Japan tour. Today, Rinehart, now hooked, practices the group's songs every day in addition to attending rehearsals. For his solos, it takes about two weeks to memorize a song and come up with dance moves.

Does he have time or energy to do anything else? "No," he said over the phone, with a laugh.

"This short trip to Bloomington, Indiana, is a breeze," Climan said. "We’ve been to Japan twice, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia and many many trips throughout Europe." Each trip usually takes weeks, and this Bloomington one will take them away from home for just a couple of nights. "It’s our first flight travel since the pandemic, so there are a number of people who haven’t traveled like this with us yet."

" For some of them travel was the very reason they joined the group," IJken said in an email.

"Everyone gets nervous, and everyone wants a solo"

"People often think Young@Heart is a choir, but that’s not quite the right term," IJken said. "We’re not a traditional choir that sings three-part harmonies. We do a lot of dancing.

"The members know this isn’t a therapy or activity group. It's something between experimental art project, performance group and rock and roll band."

IJken sees similarities between working with elders and working with youth, such as "everyone gets nervous, and everyone wants a solo."

Twenty of the singers are coming for Granfalloon. Climan enjoys seeing the members interpret the music. "Not in a cute way but with a very deep exploration of what the music is."

IJken said she and Climan choose music that has relevance to the members and that's not "gimmicky or ridiculous when sung by an older person."

When members sing in other performance groups, "we just ask that they make participation in (Young@Heart) a priority. It’s not a hard ask, because in our group they get to be backed by a phenomenal six-piece band."

The elders sometimes perform with stellar youth groups, such as Staten Island's PS22 Chorus, Chicago Children's Choir (now known as Uniting Voices Chicago) and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. For Granfalloon, they'll be performing alone.

Bloomington's own Sing for Joy! choir started because of Young@Heart

Bloomington choral director Susan (Sue) Swaney saw a performance of Young@Heart at a conference, said Sandra Freud, who directs Sing for Joy!, an inclusive community choir in Bloomington.

"Sue forwarded the idea in February 2018, asking me to direct, and the Sing for Joy! community choir was born and continues to thrive," Freund said.

"I am so impressed with the musicality and spirit of the Young@Heart choristers. It is great how they add movement for those able and willing but also have space for those other-abled! I also like their ability to sing in many different styles, and the soloists are terrific."

This year's lineup: 'Portlandia' star to perform with band Sleater-Kinney at Bloomington's Granfalloon

What's Granfalloon?

"We were invited (to Granfalloon) because I believe the presenters wanted something around creative aging, and there aren’t other groups out there quite like ours," Climan said.

Granfalloon is a festival presented by the Indiana University Arts and Humanities Council, with support from other organizations, and is energized by admiration of world famous Hoosier author Kurt Vonnegut Jr. The festival, which occurs in venues around Bloomington, honors independent thinking, the arts and community.

Coincidentally, Climan grinned as he received the chorus' invitation to attend Granfalloon — for most of his life he's been a Vonnegut fan.

"When I was 18, I devoured all of Vonnegut's books that were written at the time."

Aug. 23: Dierks Bentley at T-Mobile Center

Now something like an elder statesman of country, Bentley has been one of the genre's most consistent — and stylistically interesting — hitmakers for more than 20 years now. The Arizona native will bring Chase Rice and Tanner Usrey out to Missouri with him. Tickets range from $25.75 to $115.75.

Aug. 23: Waxahatchee at The Pageant

Now calling Kansas City home Waxahatchee leader Katie Crutchfield will play the other side of Interstate 70, touring behind "Tigers Blood," far and away one of the best records of 2024's first half. Terrific songwriter Tre Burt shares the bill. Tickets are $35-$50.

Jane’s Addiction is hitting the road in the United States with its original lineup for the first time since 2010, according to multiple reports.

The popular rock band which rose to fame in the 90s is slated to launch its tour on Aug. 9 in Las Vegas, according to LouderSound. There are currently 25 dates scheduled on the tour, which can be seen here.

The news comes on the heels of the original Jane’s Addiction lineup reuniting for the first time in nearly 15 years over the weekend.

Dave Navarro returned to join Perry Farrell, Eric Avery and Stephen Perkins as they played a small club — Bush Hall, which holds 450 people, in London, according to Loudwire.

  • Metallica’s James Hetfield rips Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for late singer’s omission
  • Legendary rock band from 90s has original lineup for first time in almost 15 years
  • Legendary rock band announces new member with familiar last name
  • Legendary rock duo reunites for rare performance
  • Popular rock band’s founding member dies at 58

The site said that the group played its classic songs, and also performed a new song called “Imminent Redemption.” That is also Jane’s Addiction’s second new song in as many years after it released, “True Love,” last year.

Navarro’s return to the stage was also significant because he had reportedly been out of action while dealing with long COVID.

Jane’s Addiction formed in 1985 and began to hit its stride with the mainstream in the late 80s and early 90s with songs such as “Been Caught Stealing” and “Jane Says.”

A track-by-track look to celebrate 40th anniversary of Springsteen's 'Born in the U.S.A.'

4 minute read.

elder band tour usa

On June 4, 1984, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band made the proclamation: We are “Born in the U.S.A.”

The now legendary album presented central themes of Springsteen’s work — community, friendship, economic disparity and patriotism — and framed them in a bigger, bolder way. The result was a generational work that produced seven hit singles and has sold more than 25 million copies.

Produced by Springsteen, Jon Landau, Steven Van Zandt and Chuck Plotkin, the album made the band superstars and established the Boss as an ’80s music icon.

The “Born in the U.S.A.” tour started with a rehearsal show at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park on June 8, 1984, four days after the album's June 4 release. The band would travel across North America to Australia, Japan and Europe before coming back to the U.S. in August 1985 to play stadiums.

The album will receive a 40th anniversary red vinyl release on Friday, June 14, from Sony Music. The special edition will include a gatefold sleeve and booklet with archival material from the era, new liner notes penned by Erik Flannigan, and a four-color lithograph.

Here's a track-by-track analysis of the record:

'Born in the U.S.A.'

The song “Born in the U.S.A.”  is one of Springsteen’s greatest artistic and commercial successes, and his most misunderstood work.

The track is about the mistreatment Vietnam veterans received back home in the ’70s and early ’80s, and the inequitable attainment of the American dream. Then-president Ronald Reagan misunderstand the concept.

“America’s future rests in a thousand dreams inside your hearts,” said Reagan during a 1984 campaign stop in Hammonton. “It rests in the message of hope in the songs of a man so many young Americans admire: New Jersey’s own, Bruce Springsteen.”

Springsteen rebutted onstage by saying Reagan wasn’t familiar with his work.

The album's third single, the song’s signature sound is Max Weinberg’s crackling snare-drum beat. Springsteen called it Weinberg’s “greatest recorded moment” in his “Born to Run” memoir.

Slick guitars and an upbeat Texas blues structure makes “Cover Me” stand out as a unique work. It’s not quite rock, it’s not quite R&B, but has a wallop of a hook and tons of appeal. Springsteen apparently plays both the crisp rhythm guitar and the Stevie Ray Vaughan-style wailing guitar lead.

The second single, the Boss delivered a great R&B-influenced lead vocal with lots of screams, yelps and emotion. Fun fact: It was originally written for Donna Summer.

'Darlington County'

Roy Bittan must get exhausted after he plays this one. Springsteen assumes a Southern twang in his voice for this rocking jamboree, which features plenty of "sha-la-las," Bittan’s Jerry Lee Lewis-style piano banging, and a rare, for “Born in the U.S.A.," sax solo from Clarence Clemons.

'Working on the Highway'

This Eddie Cochran-style hoedown is pure musical joy fronting a rather ominous tale. The song's protagonist is serving time by working on the highway, “Cool Hand Luke” style, because he was caught with an underage girlfriend.

“Son can’t you see that she’s just a little girl, she don’t know nothing about this cruel, cruel world,” dad says.

That leaves the singer and warden to “go swinging on the Charlotte County road gang.”

'Downbound Train'

This working man’s noir track is darkly framed by early use of Bittan’s Yamaha CS-80 synthesizer, which adds an ominous shade to the story of a lost soul who lost his job, then lost his girl. He now wanders on the rails, figuratively and otherwise, of an unfulfilled life.

'I’m on Fire'

When a rock ’n’ roll singer sings that he or she is on fire, it’s usually with a scream, yelp or guttural growl. In the compelling and mesmerizing “I’m on Fire,’’ Springsteen delivered the line with a sense of resignation. Passion and fulfillment are a paradox, locked in a box that the hottest fire in the furnace can’t burn open.

The sparse arrangement of “I’m on Fire’’ of a scratchy guitar, drum rim tap and mournful synthesizers adds a dimension of solitude that compels the listener. The fourth single, the Boss starred as a forlorn car mechanic in the John Sayles-directed video, which won an MTV Video Music Award for Best Male Video.

'No Surrender'

“No Surrender” features a take-no-prisoners 4/4 beat from drummer Max Weinberg, and one of the most iconic lines in rock ’n’ roll history.

“We learned more from a three-minute record, baby, than we ever learned in school,” sings Springsteen.

“No Surrender” had an important slot on the original album release as it opened Side 2. The song continues to have a significant role in the band's world as it’s played nightly on the current tour.

'Bobby Jean'

Roy Bittan’s wonderfully crafted, majestic piano line that’s tinged with tragedy is the star of the song, but the track is actually about Steven Van Zandt. The Boss and Little Steven had a falling out over Van Zandt’s role in the E Street Band in the early ’80s, and he subsequently left, missing the huge “Born in the U.S.A.’’ arena and stadium tour. He didn't return until the Reunion Tour of 1999.

“We liked the same music, we liked the same bands, we liked the same clothes,’’ sings Springsteen on the track.

That was true to a point, but Springsteen and Van Zandt are sartorially very different these days. The Boss opts for workwear basics on stage, while Van Zandt takes on a Beau Brummell-goes-psychedelic look.

'I'm Goin’ Down'

“I’m Goin’ Down,” released as the sixth single on Aug. 27, 1985, stands out from the other “Born in the U.S.A.” tracks as it doesn’t sound like other songs on the record. Instead, it has the live vibrancy of “The River’’ songs.

Repetition is the name of the game on “I’m Goin’ Down” as the Boss repeats “down” more than 50 times. Add in the bop-a-lops at the end, and it’s very apparent that the lyrics are secondary to the mesmerizing vibe.

'Glory Days'

The irony of this good-time barroom rocker about reminiscing is that the Boss wrote it when he was in his early 30s — hardly a period in life to look backward. Yet the sentiment was so artfully crafted that it’s become a signature song that’s performed often in concert.

The album's fifth single, Springsteen often adds a line of fait accompli these days. As he sang recently at the American Music Honors event at Monmouth University in West Long Branch: “hope when I get older I don’t sit around thinking about it, but that’s just what I (blanking) do!”

Who’s the “speedball” thrower whom Springsteen meets walking out of the bar? It’s Joe DePugh of Freehold, a teammate of Springsteen in Babe Ruth League baseball, said Freehold historian Kevin Coyne. The two met by chance at the Headliner in Neptune in 1973.

'Dancing in the Dark'

We can partly thank the Asbury Park club scene for the success of “Dancing in the Dark.” Springsteen wanted to check out the appeal of the new track, written and recorded late for inclusion on “Born in the U.S.A.,” so he took a copy to the Club Xanadu, now the site of Porta, in Asbury Park. He gave it to the deejay who played it, and the dance floor took off.

A performance video, co-starring a then-unknown Courteney Cox, also took off on MTV. It was the album’s first single, released on May 9, 1984, and it served as a statement that this was Springsteen and E Street Band striking a new musical chord of danceable grooves, synthesizer shades and deejay remixes.

'My Hometown'

In 1973 it was “Greetings from Asbury Park.” Eleven years later, Springsteen brought the focus to “My Hometown,” otherwise known as Freehold. There, Springsteen recalls actual events of Freehold in his lifetime, and gives them a universality that only an artist of the highest caliber could. Family, race relations, economic plight, and a tetherable connection to place called home are all in “My Hometown," the album's seventh and final single.

The song's protagonist faces a decision of whether or not to leave his hometown for better economic opportunity elsewhere. In Springsteen's case, he didn’t leave. The Boss now lives 15 minutes way in Colts Neck, and he’s often seen around town when not on tour.

Mike Love calls Beach Boys reunion with Brian Wilson in documentary 'sweet' and 'special'

elder band tour usa

In the beginning, The Beach Boys were merely a family band , sharing harmonies and trading vocal runs around the living room.

Brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love and buddy Al Jardine merged their affection for the vocal stylings of 1950s-era pop groups such as The Everly Brothers with the beaming sunshine and languid vibe of their native Hawthorne, California, and innocuous lyrics about T-Birds and surfboards.

But between their 1962 debut album and 1966’s “Pet Sounds” – the undisputed pinnacle of Brian Wilson’s studio wizardry – the band survived changes in lineup, sound and even their outlook, as they joined The Beatles in learning transcendental meditation from the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

Their saga is presented in the Disney+ documentary, “The Beach Boys, ” arriving on Friday. During the two-hour film co-directed by Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny, the band’s growth unfurls quickly. Brian Wilson’s mental health issues are briefly explained through the nervous breakdown he suffered in 1964 on a flight to Houston – which led to his decision to quit touring – and the camaraderie among the members understandably suffered when the Wilson patriarch, Murry, sold the band’s Sea of Tunes publishing company for $700,000 in 1969 without their consent.

Deeper versions of specifics in the band's lore can be found in the recently released Beach Boys' first official book , aptly titled “ The Beach Boys .” But unearthed performance footage, interviews with contemporary artists such as Ryan Tedder and Janelle Monae expressing their affection for The Beach Boys’ innovative music, and current interviews with members ranging from Brian Wilson to onetime member Blondie Chaplin will feed fans’ cravings.

The Beach Boys still tour relentlessly. Love, 83 and longtime member Bruce Johnston, 81, are the only veteran members on stage and come armed with a set list of timeless singalongs including  “I Get Around,” “Little Deuce Coupe,” “Help Me, Rhonda” and “Kokomo” (the namesake of Love’s Club Kokomo Spirits rum line).

The summer leg of their Endless Summer Gold tour starts Friday in Connecticut and travels the country through October ( honorary Beach Boy John Stamos will join for a series of dates).

Love chatted with USA TODAY recently from his home in Lake Tahoe, touching on his relationship with Brian Wilson, valuing transcendental meditation and seeking perfection on “Pet Sounds.”

More: Beatles movie 'Let It Be' is more than a shorter 'Get Back': 'They were different animals'

Question: In April, the hardcover book “The Beach Boys” came out and now you have the documentary this month. What is this current Beach Boys renaissance about?

Answer: Well, our “Endless Summer” album came out in 1974 so it’s the 50 th anniversary. We still do about 15 songs from that album in concert. And Iconic Artists Group (led by music business legend Irving Azoff) has taken over the revitalization of The Beach Boys. Irving made a deal with Disney because he felt that we would benefit – and all the great music we’ve done would benefit – from a documentary that would show the chemistry of The Beach Boys. But we’ve had some great things this year. We did Stagecoach (in April) and had the largest crowd at the stage we were playing and our friend Mark McGrath joined us and John Stamos was playing drums. It just showed the joy that was present in the audience response.

Let’s start at the end of the documentary when the band reunites at Paradise Cove. What was that like for you?

It was very sweet. Brian and I grew up together singing songs. He was bringing up things from the past. We had a chit-chat and sang some things a capella, which they didn’t use (in the film). Brian could not have been more into the moment with us. That was a special moment, especially since Paradise Cove was the site of our debut album (“Surfin’ Safari”) cover photo.

How do you feel about the documentary in general?

I feel nostalgic and I feel sad. Our music has been a miraculous blessing for ourselves and many others. But Dennis hasn’t been with us since ‘83 and Carl passed away more than 25 years ago. I think seeing everyone in this touches the heart.

There is quite an array of artists who chime in with thoughts about the band, from Janelle Monae to Lindsey Buckingham. How did you find artists with such a deep love and knowledge of The Beach Boys?

I think that was Thom’s (Zimny) contribution. But I’ve always said The Beach Boys are kind of a sonic oasis. We focus so much on harmonies and positivity with “ Good Vibrations ” and “ Fun, Fun, Fun .” For so many decades now, our music has touched so many people. I think the formula for The Beach Boys is love of harmonies and (other artists) appreciate that.

More: James Taylor talks koalas, the 'gravitational attraction' of touring and Taylor Swift

I think people will be surprised to learn how much you contributed to the songwriting. Would you say you were the Bernie Taupin to Brian’s Elton John?

Yes, I absolutely was. Brian was brilliant musically and no one was better in the studio than him at that time. And then when he took a lesser role, Carl and Bruce and Al stepped up and I came in with some songs as well. We effectively had two groups – a touring group and studio group. Glen Campbell filled in and was brilliant but he left to do fantastic things himself. Then Bruce joined in 1965 and the first song he sang on record was “California Girls.”

The film points out Brian’s obsession with details and perfection. Were the “Pet Sounds” recording sessions frustrating for you?

No, but they were … arduous. Everybody was going for perfection. I started calling Brian “dog ears” because they can hear ranges humans can’t and he was like that. On “Wouldn’t it Be Nice” we’d do a vocal section and he’d say do it again and I’d say why, it was perfect! I called him either dog ears or the Stalin in the studio.

You and Bruce are on the road for most of this year. How do you handle the rigors of touring and traveling?

Travel is probably the most challenging part to get adequate rest. But I have to be thankful to the Maharishi who taught us mediation in Paris in December 1967 and The Beatles were all there . That was a fascinating time. But the value of transcendental meditation for me is that you can get deep rest through a mental technique, which is very simple but powerful. Life can be challenging, but the Maharishi taught us TM himself, which was amazing. And to then be in India for a couple of months with The Beatles there … George Harrison’s birthday was Feb. 25 and I’m March 15. We’re both Pisces and we both took meditation very seriously. Even now, my biggest responsibility is to get the rest and relaxation to have the energy to do a great show.

elder band tour usa

Elder is Nicholas DiSalvo, Jack Donovan, Michael Risberg and Georg Edert.

Elder  is a genre-pushing rock band that melds heavy psychedelic sounds with progressive elements and evocative soundscapes. Formed in a small coastal town in Massachusetts in the mid aughts, the band has reinvented their sound over the course of five albums to grow from a stalwart of the stoner/doom scene into one of the most unique voices in the rock underground. Their long-scale compositions unfold as journeys, running the gamut of styles from the 70’s to the present within a single song with a penchant for “sheer gatefold-era grandeur” (Rolling Stone).

By continuing to incorporate new elements to their sound, Elder’s output has repeatedly set benchmarks for their peers. Beginning with 2008’s  Elder  and 2010’s  Dead Roots Stirring , Elder made ripples in the stoner rock scene with their uniquely melodic approach to the genre. In 2015 they surprised again with  Lore , a watershed moment in the band’s career (recently crowned “Album of the Decade” by The Obelisk) which brought in elements of post-, prog- and space rock into the Elder sound. Despite several years of heavy touring surrounding the album,  Reflections of a Floating   World  was released just two years later, earning a spot at the top of many best-of lists including Rolling Stone (#5,  20   Best Metal Albums Of 2017 ), Stereogum and others.

In 2019, a tour pitstop in Berlin, Germany yielded the experimental EP  The Gold & Silver Sessions . Recorded live based off ideas largely crafted while on the road, the release showcased Elder’s softer side; motorik beats, lush keyboards and sparse compositions replaced the usual colossal riffs and dense structure. Almost a decade and a half after the first sludgy riffs were recorded and the first demo pressed, the door for Elder stylistically remained wide open.

Elder’s 2020 album  Omens  answered any speculation about new directions with affirmation: evolution or extinction. Lush, intricately interwoven melodies grow and dissolve into spaced-out jams; massive riffs thunder down into a churning sea of psychedelic sounds and unpredictable grooves carry away the listener. Elder paint pictures with their music, and  Omens  shows the band experimenting with an even more colorful palette – with good reason. After thirteen years, this was the first full-length recorded with a new lineup including guitarist Michael Risberg and new drummer Georg Edert, along with guest performances by Fabio Cuomo on Rhodes piano and synthesizers.

During the pandemic of the early 2020’s, Elder continued work on new music despite having their wings clipped at the beginning of a new album release. Channeling the surreal and bizarre everyday developments into music, a body of work quickly came together that would become the band’s newest album  Innate Passage . Recorded and mixed at Cloud’s Hill Studio in Hamburg, Germany during two sessions over the course of 2021, this new album shows the band’s ever-expanding musical vocabulary and joy for sonic exploration as never before.
