Mirror Lake Inn on Travel and Leisure’s best hotels list

LAKE PLACID — The readers of Travel and Leisure magazine once again placed the AAA Four Diamond Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa in their top 500 hotels around the world. It is the only property listed within the Adirondack Park and the lone Lake Placid resort in the reader rankings.

The “World Best Awards” survey has found the 100-year-old Lake Placid hotel ranked second among resorts outside New York City, and the lone hotel north of the Catskills in their New York state category.

According to Travel and Leisure, several hundred thousand votes were cast from October 2022 to February 2023 in a multitude of global regions. The ratings were based on rooms/facilities, location, service, food and value.

Writer Jessica Vadillo penned the section titled, “Travel and Leisure Readers’ Five Favorite New York State Resorts of 2023.” She also edited the Best 500 Hotels category.

“The endless hiking trails, extraordinary lakes, and storied mountain ranges of upstate New York are a balm for busy travelers from around the world,” wrote Vadillo.

In recent years, the Mirror Lake Inn has also received plaudits from USA Today 10Best as the top waterfront hotel in the northeast; the Albany Times-Union for best hotel in the Capital Region; OnTheSnow.com for best ski hotel in the East and among the best in North America; by Conde Nast Traveler for second best resort in the Mid-Atlantic region; and by Wine Spectator with its (two glass) Best of Award of Excellence for The View Restaurant.

Loudoun Co. Superintendent under scrutiny for extensive travel amid school overdose crisis

A fter Loudoun County’s previous superintendent was fired and indicted , the Loudoun County School Board hired Aaron Spence as superintendent to make a difference for the embattled school district.

7News has learned through public records requests that Loudoun County Superintendent Spence has missed a month of the school year. And this is Spence’s first academic year on the job in Loudoun County.

This year, Spence attended the Consortium for School Networking (COSN) in Miami.  Here’s the marketing video on the conference’s website.  The video advertising the conference looks like a party for educators, showcasing Miami’s water activities and beach scene, nightlife, entertainment, yoga and more.

7News found pictures on social media of Spence in Miami, including a picture of Spence at the Black Bird Ordinary dance and nightclub on a Monday.

During the Miami conference, Spence was on a panel to discuss artificial intelligence.

The COSN conference schedule also includes luncheons, breakfasts, happy hours, network meetups, AI playgrounds, and cybersecurity and equity workshops for educators.

7News wanted to know if taxpayer dollars were spent on some of these trips. And we found they were.

According to a public records request, Spence spent $2,137.93 of taxpayer money in Miami. Of that, $799 for the conference registration, $664 for a hotel, and $662 for plane tickets.

Spence also visited Puerto Rico, San Diego and Richmond for conferences. That’s four trips in three months.

Spence was paid to be on a panel in San Diego for a discussion on “reclaiming the narrative.” The conference paid him $15,000 for two teaching sessions, according to emails obtained by 7News in a public records request. 

7News found photos on social media of several conferences Spence has attended, including several photos of him in Puerto Rico at the Institute for Education Innovation conference.

On Oct. 31 of last year, Spence was at a conference in Richmond. That was the same day news broke that Loudoun County Public Schools and Spence didn’t immediately tell parents about a string of student overdoses, some including fentanyl.

According to the sheriff's office, eleven Park View High School students overdosed , becoming one of LCPS’ biggest school safety crises since two school sexual assaults in 2021 .

On Nov. 1, Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed an Executive Order after LCPS failed to immediately notify parents of the overdoses. But that didn’t stop Spence from traveling to West Palm Beach for a conference the next day. Shortly after the trip to West Palm Beach, Spence attended a conference in Williamsburg, Va.

In all, Spence has gone to ten conferences that we know of so far just this school academic year.

Spence and LCPS didn’t respond to 7News’ many requests to ask Spence about his travel. That's why 7News Reporter Nick Minock found Spence to ask him questions.

“Can you answer some questions?” Minock asked Spence outside the school administration building. “Can you tell us why you were traveling when students were overdosing at Park View High School? Was West Palm Beach too important to be at? Sir? How do you justify being away for a month of the school year going to places like Miami and San Diego?"

Spence did not answer 7News’ questions and Spence got in his car and drove away.

As of January, School Board Chair Melinda Mansfield has been approving Spence’s travel. 7News asked Mansfield for an interview several times. She never responded.

7News stopped by Mansfield’s house and knocked on her front door to ask her if she could make time to answer questions. But Mansfield didn't answer and is refusing to answer questions about Spence’s travel.

Spence became superintendent on Sept. 1, 2023. Twenty-eight days later, he started traveling to conferences.

Spence makes a salary of $375,000 plus benefits . If the school board still employs Spence as of June 30, he gets a $20,000 bonus. And if the school board rates Spence at least proficient on his evaluation next month, he gets a raise.

Before Spence was hired, an LCPS survey showed parents and teachers wanted him to prioritize school safety , staff recruitment and retention, teacher quality, academic rigor, communication and transparency and more. And parents and teachers wanted their next superintendent to be accountable and responsible for their actions.

"Is he achieving those goals if he's spending a significant amount of time traveling during the school year?" 7News asked Mansfield and Spence for an interview to ask that question more than a month ago. And again, Spence and Mansfield refuse to interview with 7News to answer questions about Spence’s travel.

According to 7News' public records requests, Spence has spent at least 30 days of this academic school year at conferences, including 24 school days. 

7News checked in with other local superintendents to see how many conferences they have attended so far this school year.

Spence tops the list with ten trips so far this school academic year.

The Superintendent in Prince William County has attended three in-state conferences, one conference in Washington, D.C., one conference in Atlanta, Georgia, and one conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, according to Prince William County Public Schools. That’s a total of six conferences.

The DCPS Chancellor has gone to six conferences, including three conferences in Washington, D.C., and three conferences out of state, according to D.C. Public Schools. The out-of-state conferences include the Aspen Urban Superintendent Network Retreat, the Chiefs for Change Annual Meeting, and the Wallace Foundation’s Equity-Centered Pipeline Initiative Convening.

The Alexandria City Superintendent has attended five conferences, including four conferences in Virginia and one conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, according to Alexandria City Public Schools.

The Superintendent in Arlington County has attended three out-of-state conferences, according to Arlington County Public Schools, which include the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents conference, the National Association of Black School Educators conference, and the American Association of School Administrators conference.

The Fairfax County Superintendent has attended three conferences, including one conference in Virginia, one conference in Washington, D.C., and one conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, according to Fairfax County Public Schools.

Montgomery County Superintendent Monifa McKnight didn’t attend conferences when she was with the school division this academic year and the interim superintendent has not attended conferences since being appointed, according to Montgomery County Public Schools.

Prince George’s County Public Schools refused to tell 7News how many conferences its superintendent attended and instructed 7News to submit a Freedom of Information Act request to receive that information.

More than 2.9 million travelers were screened at U.S. airports on Friday, surpassing a previous record set last year on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, according to the transportation security agency.

“Officers have set a new record for most travelers screened in a single day!” the TSA tweeted. “We recommend arriving early.”

The third busiest day on record was set on Thursday when just under 2.9 million travelers were screened at U.S. airports.

In Atlanta, the world’s busiest airport had its busiest day ever. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport broke a traffic record on Thursday when 111,000 passengers, airlines crew and airport employees were screened at security checkpoints. The second busiest day followed on Friday when 109,960 people were screened, according to the TSA.

With 104.6 million passengers, the Atlanta airport was the busiest in the world last year, according to Airports Council International.

U.S. airlines expect to carry a record number of passengers this summer. Their trade group estimates that 271 million travelers will fly between June 1 and August 31, breaking the record of 255 million set last summer.

AAA predicted this will be the busiest start-of-summer weekend in nearly 20 years, with 43.8 million people expected to roam at least 50 miles from home between Thursday and Monday — 38 million of them taking vehicles.

The annual expression of wanderlust that accompanies the start of the summer travel season is happening at a time when Americans tell pollsters they are worried about the economy and the direction of the country.

In what had long been celebrated every May 30 to honor America’s fallen soldiers, Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday in 1971, observed on the last Monday in May.

Jason Redman, a retired Navy SEAL who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan, told The Associated Press last year that he honors the friends he’s lost. Thirty names are tattooed on his arm “for every guy that I personally knew that died.”

Utah man declined $100K offer to travel to Congo on ‘security job’ that was covert coup attempt

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The friend of a prominent Congolese opposition leader’s son said he turned down a six-figure offer to travel there from the U.S. as part of the family’s security detail in what turned out to be a failed coup attempt.

Marcel Malanga, the 21-year-old son of eccentric coup leader Christian Malanga, was detained by Congolese forces Sunday morning, along with a former classmate from their hometown of West Jordan, Utah, after his father was killed in a shootout while resisting arrest. His high school football teammate, Tyler Thompson , 21, was one of two other Americans arrested after an ill-fated attack on the presidential palace in Kinshasa.

Six people were dead and dozens arrested, including the three Americans, following that attack and another on the residence of a close ally of President Felix Tshisekedi , the Congolese army spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Sylvain Ekenge, said.

Daniel Gonzalez, a former teammate of the two Utah residents caught up in the foiled coup, told The Associated Press that Marcel had offered him $50,000 to $100,000 to spend four months in Congo as a security guard for his politician father. The 22-year-old FedEx worker strongly considered it, but said it lacked concrete details. He ultimately declined so he could spend the summer with his girlfriend.

“I feel really sad for Tyler and Marcel but, at the end of the day, I can just be grateful that I didn’t go because I would be stuck in the same scary situation,” Gonzalez said.

Marcel’s lucrative offer to Gonzalez sheds light on how he might have enticed Thompson to come along on what his stepmother, Miranda, said was supposed to be a vacation.

It was one of many propositions the coup leader’s American son made to former football teammates in what many described as a desperate effort to bring someone with him to Congo. He pitched the trip to some as a family vacation and still to others as a service trip to build wells in drought-stricken communities.

Although it’s unclear whether Thompson was offered money, multiple teammates told the AP that he had alluded to such incentives, telling one friend that the trip could be a “big financial opportunity.”

Thompson’s family insists he’s a political pawn who was dragged into an international conflict under false pretenses. They’ve had no direct communication with their son since the coup and are worried for his safety, his stepmother said.

Marcel’s mother, Brittney Sawyer, said her son is innocent and had followed his father.

Christian Malanga, the slain leader of the Congolese opposition political party, considered himself president of a shadow government in exile, which he called the “New Zaire.” He described himself on his website as a refugee who settled in Salt Lake City with his family in the 1990s, pursuing business opportunities in gold mining and used car sales before eventually moving back to Congo to fight for political reforms.

While campaigning for the Congolese Parliament, he claimed he was jailed and endured torturous beatings. He later published a manifesto detailing plans to reform Congo’s security services and described his movement as an effort to organize fellow emigres against the “current Congolese dictatorship government regime.”

“Marcel was pretty secretive about his dad. He didn’t even know him well until he spent last summer in Africa,” Gonzalez said. “There’s no way Marcel had any idea what he’d be getting us into or he never would’ve offered. He’s one of the best friends a person could have.”

In the early hours Sunday, Christian Malanga began livestreaming video on social media from inside the palace. He is seen with his armed son, who hastily pulls a neck gaiter over his face, looking around wide-eyed. Congo officials have not commented on how the attackers were able to get inside.

Gonzalez, of Herriman, Utah, said he had communicated with Marcel about the financial offer over Snapchat, in messages that have since disappeared, in the months leading up to the coup attempt. He was shocked to learn how the trip played out.

Marcel had told Gonzalez that his father was letting him hire a friend so he would have company during his summer abroad. He seemed excited to be able to offer such a substantial amount of money to a close friend who needed it, Gonzalez explained.

The Malangas had promised on-the-job training, full coverage of travel expenses and the chance to explore a new part of the world while making an income, he said. Marcel insisted repeatedly that it was safe, but didn’t share details about his father’s background.

Neither Gonzalez nor his mother thought the trip would be unsafe, he said, despite the U.S. State Department strongly discouraging travel to Congo — but he turned it down when his girlfriend asked him not to leave for four months.

He later saw private Snapchat videos filmed by Marcel that showed Thompson looking frightened as armed Congolese soldiers surrounded their vehicle. In Gonzalez’s final Snapchat exchange with his friend before their capture, he asked whether Thompson was OK and urged them to stay safe.

Marcel assured him that they were.

Other former football teammates, including Luke Barbee and Jaden Lalor, had heard different pitches about the trip and wondered why Marcel seemed so desperate to bring someone along. Neither could fathom their friends’ possible involvement in a violent attack.

“I consider Marcel a brother to me and Tyler a friend, and I truly believe Marcel’s father must have pressured them for his own wants,” Lalor said. “I just want them back safely.”
