Tour Name: Experience Egypt Cultural Sightseeing in 10 Days

This was the trip of a lifetime that I was able to have with my eldest son - an absolutely Read More amazing experience. To be able to actually see the places and artifacts that I had read about and studied was truly phenomenal. Our hotels were great, the travel to and from sites was completely taken care of, we never felt unsafe or left to our own devices, and the itinerary was just right. But what made the experience so fab was our two guides - Mahmoud Nour in Luxor/Aswan/Abu Simbel and "Max" in Cairo/Memphis/Saqqara. They taught us history and context as it related to each site we visited and they indulged my myriad questions. They were both so incredibly knowledgeable and my questions were never ignored or unanswered. In addition, they shared their culture with us and treated us to some awesome dining experiences. We were reminded that Egypt is more than just ancient ruins. I would recommend without reservation this tour experience. And "hats off" to Mahmoud and Max!!! I left feeling like I had made some great new friends. And I can't wait to try some home-made kushari. Read Less

Egypt Tours Portal is an excellent company to use to arrange your visit to Egypt. They wor Read More k with phenomenal guides (we had Mahmoud Nour in Upper Egypt and Mohsen aka Max in Lower Egypt...I would recommend asking for these guides by name, as they were truly superb), make all the necessary arrangements in terms of drivers, covid testing, hotels, and in-country flights, and can tailor your tour to whatever it is you most want to see. The entire experience was smooth from start to finish. Both Mahmoud and Max spoke excellent English, were extremely knowledgeable, and went out of their way to ensure our experience was everything we hoped it would be. This was the second time I have used ETP, and I will continue to recommend them to anyone who expresses any interest in exploring Egypt. We especially liked that our tour group was limited to only our party, which meant we got one-on-one attention at all the sites, and allowed us to get answers to all our questions. And for those of you who are worried about safety or health in Egypt, in our experience it was extremely safe, and we never had any issues related to COVID-19. The sands of the desert shift underfoot. The sun climbs high into the Egyptian sky. And the great Pyramids of Giza shimmer in the distance. There you stand in awe before the power and ambition of an inspiring civilization. In this legendary place, explore thousands of years of history while experiencing a thriving culture. Look to the past and keep an eye on the future – the great monuments reveal something different to each traveler. Discover the world of the ancient Egyptians as you visit one incomparable site after another.

Destination Must-See's

Egypt ms1

Located on the banks of the Nile, Egypt’s capital city of Cairo is one of the largest cities in Africa. Here, visitors find something for everyone: beautiful views, good climate, and welcoming locals that make any activity lots of fun. You can enjoy the arts, go for walks down the Nile promenade, or visit the pyramids.

Egypt ms2

This is Egypt’s sunniest southern city. The town is small enough to walk around, and life there is slow and relaxing. Aswan is in a perfect location along the Nile where visitors can watch sailboats passing by or dine in a floating restaurant. Every night, dancers and musicians perform in the cultural center.

Egypt ms3

Giza is the third largest city in Egypt. It is located on the west bank of the Nile River southwest of Cairo. The most famous attraction in the city of Giza, located on the Giza plateau, is the pyramids. Also on the Giza plateau you can see the Great Sphinx and perhaps ride a camel.

Egypt ms4

Abu Simbel:

The archaeological area of Abu Simbel consists of two temples. The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside as a monument to Pharaoh Ramesses II and queen Nefertari. The temples were saved when the rising waters of the Nile threatened, and were raised higher for protection in 1968. In the innermost shrine seats statues of the gods Ptah, Amun-Ra, the deified Ramses II and Re-Horakhte. The temple is so precisely placed that on February 22 and October 22, the first rays of the morning sun shine through the entire temple and illuminate the four gods.

Destination Must-Do's

Egypt md1

The pyramids of Egypt are true wonders of the ancient world. They were originally built as tombs for the pharaohs and their queens. Some believe that they had sloped sides so the pharaoh could symbolically climb to the sky and live forever. Today there are over 100 pyramids of all different shapes and sizes in Egypt, as archaeologists continue to uncover and identify previously unknown pyramids.

Egypt md2

The Sphinx has been a symbol of Egypt for thousands of years. With the body of a lion and the head of what is generally believed to be Pharaoh Khafra, the Great Sphinx of Giza symbolizes strength and wisdom. For centuries, visitors have included poets, scholars and adventurers seeking knowledge about its history and the secrets it might hold.

Egypt md3

Today, the boy king is one of the best-known pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Yet, from the time of his mysterious death at 19 until the year 1922, he was relatively unknown until his tomb was finally found. The entrance was covered with debris, but the inside was completely intact along with murals and so many artifacts that it took ten years to catalog them. Many of the artifacts travel the world on exhibit and provide insight into the fascinating ancient Egyptian civilization.

Egypt md4

Camels in the desert:

Humans have used camels for transport for thousands of years. Built for traversing the desert, they can carry about 500 pounds, can go up to six months without food and water, and can easily trek their way through sandstorms. They are herbivores with tough, leathery mouths who can eat prickly desert plants that most animals cannot. When water is available, camels rehydrate faster than any other mammal and can drink up to 30 gallons at a time in just under 15 minutes.

Expert Advice

diana

No one drinks the tap water in Egypt – not even the locals – so be prepared to buy lots of bottled water.

Egypt e2

You should definitely pack comfortable walking shoes, preferably with crepe or rubber soles, as well as a hat for sun protection, and swimwear for free time when on the cruise. Please note that dress in the Egypt is conservative; however casual touring wear such as shorts and tee shirts are acceptable for tourists, though you may feel more comfortable in long pants or long skirts. Linen is recommended so as to protect you from heat and sun.

Egypt e3

When I am traveling here I like to keep some cash on hand. I’ve found that many Egyptians rely on tips for the majority of their income.

"I'll take you back in time to a land of ancient pyramids, royal tombs filled with gold and the mighty Nile, the world's longest river"

Travel Director

View the Great Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza

We’ll take you deep into a history that spans millennia in the old kingdom of Egypt. Marvel at the Great Pyramids of Giza, the oldest of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World, and the only one to remain largely untouched. You’ll also meet the mythical Great Sphinx, one of the world’s oldest statues.

Wander through the Botanical Gardens on Kitchener's Island

See the locals fishing in the Nile waters, as we sail in a felucca to the Aswan Botanical Gardens on Kitchener’s Island. The island is peaceful and green, with a collection of rare and exotic plants that was initiated by Lord Kitchener. Roam the gardens and discover towering palms and views of the Nile.

See the Sultan Hassan Mosques in Cairo

Set in Cairo’s Old Town, the Sultan Hassan Mosque is one of the world’s most important mosques and a remarkable historical monument. It was constructed during the 14th century during the reign of Sultan Hassan, and you’ll marvel at the massive size and beautiful Mamluk architecture of the building.

Visit the Temple of Isis on the island of Philae

Take a boat ride to Philae Island, set between the Aswan Dams, where you’ll discover the ancient temple built to honor the goddess Isis. We’ll also take you to a Roman style theater on the island, for a retelling of the eternal Nile flood and the legends of the goddesses Isis and Hathor.

Be amazed by the Sound and Light show in Giza

We’ll return to the Great Pyramids of Giza after dark, where you’ll watch the pyramids light up in a dazzling sound and light show. You’ll learn the history of ancient Egypt as Egyptian Pharaohs rise to tell their stories, while lasers and lightbeams illuminate the walls of the ancient pyramids.

Our top 5 things to do in Egypt

Our Egypt holiday packages will reveal all the mysteries of Egypt, from monumental mosques and ancient temples, to the Great Pyramids of Giza.

Luxor Museum

With a massive collection of relics gathered from tombs and temples, the Luxor Museum is one of the best museums in Egypt. You can see treasures from the tomb of King Tutankhamun, the royal mummies of two pharaohs, and antiquities dating from the end of the Old Kingdom to the Mamluk period.

The Egyptian Museum

The Egyptian Museum contains one of the world’s most important collections of ancient Egyptian antiquities. There are 120,000 item and you’ll discover jewellery, toys, the mummies of great pharaohs, and riches from the tomb of King Tutankhamen, including the Gold Mask of Tutankhamen, made of 11 kilograms of solid gold.

Deir El-bahri

Queen Hatshepsut's Temple

Built for the Eighteenth Dynasty pharaoh Hatshepsut, the Temple of Hatshepsut is one of the most extraordinary monuments of ancient Egypt. Carved into the towering limestone cliffs, the temple contains a chapel, sun court and sanctuary, and terraces that were once covered in frankincense and myrrh trees.

Best museums in Egypt

Our Egypt guided tours delve into the vast history of the country, with visits to the top museums including the Luxor and the grand Temple of Hatshepsut.

Hamam Mahshi

In Egypt, pigeons are marinated and stuffed with rice or freekeh, onions, giblets and a variety of spices like cumin, pepper and cinnamon. The whole bird is then grilled or spit-roasted, and while Egyptians traditionally eat hamam mahshi during celebratory occasions, you can also find it in restaurants around the country.

A classic Egyptian dish made of pita bread stuffed with minced meat, onions, parsley and onions, which is then baked in an oven. It’s traditionally made in Egyptian homes, although our Local Specialists will show you the best restaurants to try this delicious dish.

Kushari is Egypt’s favorite fast food, made from a bowl of macaroni, chickpeas, rice and black lentils covered in tomato sauce and fried onions. It’s then topped with spicy chilli sauce and garlic vinegar, and it’s one of the tastiest comfort foods in the country.

Best food in Egypt

Our Egypt vacation tours will reveal the country’s incredible cuisine, from classics like kebab and falafel to traditional favorites like hawawshi and kushari.

What to pack for Egypt

People packing for a tour

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Adaptor plug

In Egypt, the standard voltage is 220 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type C and F. The standard frequency is 50 Hz.

Comfortable shoes

From exploring the Great Pyramids of Giza, to wandering the Botanical Gardens, you’ll need a comfortable pair of shoes on your Egypt holiday.

Light clothing

Egypt is known for its blazing heat, so it’s best to wear light, loose-fit clothing. Since Egypt is a Muslim country, you’ll need to ensure your shoulders and knees are covered.

The sunshine can be blinding in Egypt, so bring a pair of sunglasses to protect you from the sun rays and the sandy desert.

Protect yourself from the sun with SPF 30 or higher and be sure to apply it regularly. It’s also advised to bring a hat and a light scarf to shield your skin.

What travelers say about our Egypt tours

Travel tips for egypt trips.

When it comes to picking the perfect time for your Egypt vacations and other Africa tours , the weather is one of the most important things to think about. Egypt experiences mild to very hot temperatures year-round, especially when you are farther inland. The most pleasant weather can be experienced from October through April, which is also when the country gets the most visitors. Egypt's peak tourist season starts in December and continues through January, so prepare to contend with some crowds at famous sites like the Pyramids of Giza and Temples of Luxor.

Temperatures soar well into the nineties from May through September. If hot weather is right up your alley and summertime trips to Egypt call you, you'll be rewarded with fewer crowds at the country's most famous sites. Just keep in mind that Ramadan also occurs during the summer months, and shops and attractions tend to close a bit early during this time.

Egypt calls to mind pyramids, pharaohs, sphinxes, and tombs, and you'll have plenty of opportunities to experience these iconic sites during Egypt tours with us. When you choose our Egypt guided tour packages, you'll travel to the country's can't-miss destinations securely while enjoying in-depth guidance from an expert Egyptologist, who'll be with you every step of the way.

Main cities are the places to discover how ancient history mingles with modern life on Egypt tour packages. Here a few sites to marvel at on our ** Egypt & the Nile **tour:

The Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx in Giza, which are two of the top destinations in Egypt

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa in Alexandria, Egypt’s second-largest city

The Aswan High Dam in Aswan

The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities and a beautiful array of Islamic architecture in Cairo

Of course, one of the best ways to see all that Egypt has to offer is from the storied Nile, which passes some of the country's most famous sites. Hop aboard a Nile River cruise on our Egypt vacations to see:

The Temples of Karnak and Luxor

The West Bank

The Valley of the Kings

Edfu’s Temple of Horus

The Temple of Kom Ombo

Thanks to the rich soil of the Nile River Valley and the Delta, Egypt's cuisine is supplemented by bountiful harvests of vegetables, fruits, and legumes. Popular ingredients you'll taste on Egypt group tours include fava beans, lentils, chickpeas, eggplant, zucchini, onions, tomatoes, cabbage, and citrus fruits. Spices like cumin, coriander, and cardamom are typical in many Egyptian dishes, as is a clarified butter called ghee.

Lunch is the biggest meal of the day. While meals usually center around vegetables and stews, some meat dishes are also popular. Here are some of the bites to seek out on trips to Egypt:

  • Lamb kebabs
  • Skewered, spiced meat patties called kofta
  • Eish baladi , Egyptian bread that's similar to pita bread and is commonly used to scoop up food
  • A hearty dish called kushari , which is a mixture of pasta, rice, chickpeas, lentils, tomato sauce, and fried onions
  • Baba ghanoush
  • Stuffed grape leaves
  • Fish from the Red Sea
  • Tea, the national drink, which is offered at breakfast, after lunch, and in most social situations

Keep in mind that you should only drink bottled water on Egypt guided tours. It's best not to drink tap water, including when brushing your teeth, and you should avoid eating fresh fruits and vegetables unless they are cooked or washed in clean water and peeled.

Group travel to Egypt is always amazing, but having the right stuff in your suitcase makes every trip better! The country experiences high temperatures and many iconic sites are in desert locations, so a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and light layers will help protect you from the sun. If you're traveling between October and April, bring a warmer layer for when the temperatures dip in the evenings.

Even when it's hot out, it's best to be respectful of the more conservative customs in the country by covering shoulders and knees. Don't fret—you can still stay relatively cool by taking a page from the ancient Egyptians and wearing light, breathable fabrics like linen! And, get ready to explore all Egypt has to offer by packing a sturdy pair of walking shoes.

Toss a small bottle of hand sanitizer and tissues in your day bag, just in case; you'll be happy you have them if you come upon a public restroom where other facilities aren't available. Pack a small first-aid kit in your carry-on, and be sure to ask your healthcare provider about any over-the-counter medications you plan to bring with you as some may not be permitted in Egypt.

The awe-inspiring treasures and stunning landscapes of this country are perfectly complemented by the warmth and hospitality of its people. You’ve never seen Egypt like this

“Egypt” text over columns painted and carved with hieroglyphs.

Know before you go

.css-1m22qs9{-webkit-align-items:center;-webkit-box-align:center;-ms-flex-align:center;align-items:center;background:none;border:0;color:inherit;display:grid;font-size:17px;font-weight:700;line-height:1.2;grid-template-columns:1fr auto;margin:0;padding:16px;text-align:left;width:100%;}.css-1m22qs9 path{stroke:#191919;} language .css-xxs3zl{-webkit-align-items:center;-webkit-box-align:center;-ms-flex-align:center;align-items:center;display:-webkit-box;display:-webkit-flex;display:-ms-flexbox;display:flex;}@media print{.css-xxs3zl{display:none;}}.

The official language of Egypt is Arabic, but most locals also speak English. Try your hand at some of the local language:

  • Hello : Salam
  • My name is (your name) : Ismi (your name)
  • How much does this cost? : Bekam Hada?
  • Yes : Na’am
  • Thank you : Shukran
  • Where is the bathroom? : Ayn el-merhad?

As you prepare to spend time in a new continent, country, and culture, prepare yourself for ancient tombs, world-famous Pyramids, and vibrant cities. Read on to learn more about Egyptian and Muslim culture, and see specific tips to help you make the most of your trip.

  • While in Egypt, the Egyptian Tourism Police mandates all foreign groups must accompanied by an armed guard and/or convoy. Often they will blend into background, but if engaged, can be another local touch point and perk!
  • Areas like the Red Sea are more relaxed with clothing, but Egypt is a conservative and Muslim country so you should be mindful of covering more “private” body parts on this trip.
  • PDA is not accepted or normal in Egypt. This includes holding hands and hugging.
  • We said it once but we’ll say it again: Do not drink the tap water. Egypt is still technically considered a developing country and the tap water is not safe to drink, and not even to brush your teeth.
  • There's no technical speed limit in Egypt, and in many places there are no traffic lights. This means a lot of traffic, traffic noise (horns), and required extra caution to cross the streets.
  • Bargaining is common in Egypt; at the markets, try it out and start by asking for a price that’s half of what’s initially offered!
  • Be considerate when taking photos of locals, and know that some people, especially women, might not want their photo taken at all, or will ask for a payment in return for the photo. When in doubt, just ask the person if you can take a photo of them.

Food & Drink

Using the bounties of the Nile Valley, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a gastronomic heaven. You’ll sample a variety of local dishes on your trip, but read on for tips when dining in Egypt, and delicacies you must try:

  • Ful Medammes: This dish of fava beans is the most common breakfast for Egyptians, usually served with eggs, cheese, or bread.
  • Mahshi: A favorite for vegetarians, Mahshi is veggies stuffed with some sort of rice filling and leaves (grapevine, cabbage).
  • Shwarma: A popular street food, shwarma gives you the choice between chicken or beef marinated with spices and placed in a wrap then served with tahini. YUM.
  • Roz Bel Laban: Egypt’s version of rice pudding. If you like rice pudding you’ll love Roz Bel Laban.
  • Falafel (Ta’meya): Another breakfast treat or snack, Egypt’s ta’meya is made with fava beans instead of the traditional chickpeas.
  • Fattah: Tracing all the way back to ancient Egypt for special celebrations, this is a main dish that combines crispy bread, rice, meat, and sauce.
  • Sayadeya: A coastal delicacy that uses white fish fillets marinated in lemon juice and spices then lightly fried!
  • Tea: Tea is the national drink of Egypt and is offered everywhere! Breakfast, after lunch, and when socializing… and that’s the tea.

We plan it all. And then some.

In the evening you’ll board an overnight train to the city of Aswan, Egypt’s southernmost city.

Experience Nubian Culture

Take in the views of the Nile Valley as you enjoy breakfast on the train. Upon arriving in Aswan, you’ll feel the vibe of this easy-going city straddling the Nile River.

Kayak the Nile’s flat waters observing the diversity of birds that have made homes on nearby islands and paddle along the walls of the Philae Temple.

Experience a unique cultural visit to a Nubian village. Sit with a local family to share authentic dishes and hear about their everyday lives.

Abu Simbel Temples

Take in the sunset over the Nile. Tonight, you’ll sleep under a canopy of stars on the boat’s deck as people have done for thousands of years.

Karnak Temple

Wake up to the sun on your face and enjoy breakfast on board the felucca. Say goodbye to the Nubian boat crew and make your way to the open-air Luxor Museum.

Gaze up at the Colossi of Memnon, two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III measuring 60 feet (18 meters) in height!

Feel welcomed into a local family’s home for another unique cultural experience and share a home-cooked Egyptian lunch. Then it’s off to the beach resort town of Hurghada.

Wake up in your resort located on the shores of the Red Sea and enjoy breakfast on site. Today is a free day for you to choose your own adventure.

Opt to discover the nearby islands on a snorkeling trip, go scuba diving for those who are certified, or even take an underwater excursion in a submarine. Feel like relaxing after a long trip? Enjoy Hurghada’s beaches, or walk along the rows of shops and restaurants at the marina.

Egypt Group Tours for Solo Travelers

Travel solo as part of a group tour to Egypt

Why Travel Solo To Egypt?

The pyramids, the River Nile, Cairo’s buzzing street-food scene... Egypt lays claim to some of the world’s most revered treasures and you’ll experience them all while traveling solo as part of a group tour in this extraordinary country.

This is a destination imbued with history and legend, a place that still conjures images of treasure-laden tombs and the discovery of Tutankhamun. And while nowadays you’re less likely to unearth gold in an uncharted temple on your tour through Egypt, you will stumble upon treasures of other kinds every way you turn.

Imagine losing yourself in the intense sounds and smells of the labyrinthine Khan al-Khalili Bazaar in Cairo. Picture the moment you see the pyramids of Giza for the first time. See yourself drifting down the Nile on a traditional felucca sailboat and dining with locals in the Nubian village of Gharb Soheil . Or witnessing the temples of Luxor by candlelight. These are moments more valuable than gold, we think. Although gold would be nice, too.

Please see our  FAQs page about travel to Egypt during the ongoing situation in Israel and Palestine.

Top places to visit in Egypt

Located on the west bank of the Nile on the edge of the desert, Giza is the site of the world-famous Pyramids – the last remaining Wonder of the Ancient World – as well as a complex of other ancient Egyptian monuments including the iconic Sphinx.

Luxor is often called the world’s greatest open-air museum, for the scale and grandeur of its monuments that survived from ancient Thebes. Don’t miss the colonnaded temple of Karnak or the tombs of Ramses I and VI in the ancient Valley of the Kings.

Cairo is a vast, sprawling capital city with a long rich history and divine cuisine. Visit the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities or the Mosque of Muhammad Ali (Pasha) and explore the winding streets of the bustling Khan Al-Khalili bazaar.

Starting point for trips to Abu Simbel and the Temple of Ramses II, Aswan is a tranquil base where you can take lazy felucca rides to river islands, visit Nubian villages or explore the atmospheric desert Monastery of St Simeon.

The perks of solo travel in Egypt with Intrepid

Seven travelers eating lunch on a felucca on the Nile in Egypt

Ready-made friends

Call us biased, but we think one of the best parts of traveling is making new memories with people who are just as hungry for adventure as you are. That's the beauty of a small group tour. There'll be plenty of time to do your own thing if you want to, but you'll always have someone to snap a photo of you with the Pyramids, grab a coffee with, or chat with on an overnight sleeper train from Cairo to Aswan.

An Intrepid leader discussing the history of the ancient Pyramids of Giza in Egypt

A local leader

Egypt's history is  that  rich, it can be hard to know where to start. With a local leader by your side, you'll have an on-tour history expert ready to answer your burning questions and help you uncover the mysteries of the Pyramids, Sphinx, and the Valley of the Kings. They'll also introduce you to locals, show you hidden spots that you won't find on Google, and give you top-notch recommendations for your free time.

Egypt is generally a safe place to travel to, as long as you keep your wits about you and adhere to the status quo. Crime rates are low, but be aware of scam artists and pickpockets which can be common in busy souqs and tourist hotspots. Your local leader knows the areas and tourist traps to avoid, will get you from A to B smoothly, and will let you know the do's and don'ts when it comes to local customs.

Logistics and convenience

Anxious about local bus rides or sleeper trains? Not sure about how to go about organizing a felucca cruise (traditional Egyptian sailing boat)? No worries. When you travel with us, we'll take care of all the planning and logistics so you don't have to (there's enough admin to do in everyday life, right?). All you need to do is rock up –   with your camera and a sense of adventure!

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip in egypt.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please  contact us  so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries, some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances, it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that, there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling in Egypt?

You sure do. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their tour. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability, and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Are Intrepid's Egypt trips accessible for travelers with disabilities??

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Our solo travel safety guide

Share your itinerary.

Good advice for us all, but particularly for people traveling solo. Make copies of your itinerary, contact details, passport, and travel insurance, then email them to yourself and to one or two friends/family at home. Check in on social media when you can so people can keep track of where you are.

Remember the little things

If you’re arriving late in a city by yourself, book a hotel with a front desk or concierge service (many hotels also offer private transfers that don’t cost the earth from the airport or train station). If you're traveling with us, we can help you organize an  arrival transfer.  Read your maps  before  you head out for a walk (you can use a map app on your smartphone – or take screenshots of where you’re going if you don’t want to use up your precious data). If you need to check your map when you’re out and about, duck into a shop or café to do it. Leave the blingy jewelry, wedding rings, and designer clothes at home, and aim to dress as the locals do – hit up the local markets if you haven’t packed the right outfits. Aim to keep track of travel times, so you’re not caught out after dark.

Roam if you want to

Most mobile/cell providers now offer travel passes to help manage your international roaming costs (which, let’s face it, are expensive!). For a few dollars a day, you’ll have access to data, which means you can log into your apps (like Skype, email, and WhatsApp) when you’re out of WiFi zones and quickly get in touch with someone – a friend at home, someone in your group, or the police – if you need to. It might also be worth checking out the local cell/mobile providers as these can be quite cost-effective.

Fare's fair

Solo travelers are way more likely to be ‘taken for a ride’ at the airport by unscrupulous taxi drivers, so do your research before you arrive. Make sure you get a cab from the airport/station taxi rank – if you’re not sure where to go, just head to the information desk for help. Touts tend to hang out in the arrivals area and promise cheaper rates, but can often be dodgy. When you get to the cab rank, ask the driver to use the meter or request a cost estimate  before  you hop in the car – if it’s way higher than it should be, pick another vehicle. A lot of airports have train stations attached as well, so consider public transport if you want to save a dollar or two.

Stick together

It’s one of the advantages of traveling solo on a group tour: safety in numbers. The big, 50-person bus groups stand out on the road, but a small  Intrepid group  of eight or nine people, with a local leader showing the way – including areas to avoid and getting around safely – won’t draw much attention. Plus, it’s a great way to see parts of the world you may feel uncomfortable exploring on your own. If you want to do things on your own, consider a  day tour  to familiarise yourself with a city and get to know the local way of life.

Trust your instincts

Solo travel is all about confidence. If you’re relaxed and self-assured on the street, you’re more likely to blend in. When you meet new people, don’t assume they’re all out to get you, but be sensible too and trust your gut. If it feels wrong, it probably is. Remember: the popular tourist areas are often the most well-lit and secure, but they’re often a juicier target for pickpockets and scammers. Just use your common sense; half of travel safety is simply being aware of your surroundings.

How to Plan a Perfect Trip to Egypt? Ask the Concierge.

I n ancient Egypt, dogs were seemingly everywhere. Their likenesses were carved into the walls of tombs for royalty, their leather leads and harnesses have been found in burial suites, nearly 8 million mummified pups were discovered in 2015 at a site called Saqqara, and Anubis, the god said to guide the dead to their place in the underworld, has the head of a dog (OK, some say jackal, but those are probably cat people). But none of this quite explains the photo that was sitting in my room when I checked into the Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza.

It was early in September, and after flying into Cairo from New York City, I wasn’t looking for more than a bed on which to collapse. But when I walked into my room, the first thing that caught my eye was a framed photo of my husband and I with our two dogs. At first, it seemed like a nice touch from a hotel brand known for nice touches, but then I realized—it was a picture we’d never shared. The photo had been taken by a photographer and we had plans to use it for a holiday card, but while she’d posted it to her Instagram page, we’d been holding off for a holiday reveal. Which means someone at the property did more than just print a shot from my social media and frame it; they really did the work.

It was a thread that ran throughout the trip, which took us to the brand’s properties in both Cairo and Sharm El Sheikh, a seaside retreat at the tip of the Sinai Peninsula. Little things were thought of for us long before we thought of them ourselves, and an expertise in not only the places we were traveling but the ways in which they would best be enjoyed proved time and time again to make the difference between a good time and great one. It isn’t that the people at the Four Seasons are mind readers, though, they just know how to listen.

Our trip began months before we left the United States, on a call with members of the concierge teams at the properties who asked incisive questions about the trip we wanted to take, covering topics that felt big (what do you want to see; where do you want to go; is there anything you’d always regret missing) and small (still or sparkling?), and patiently listening to me make grand proclamations about how I hoped things would play out—knowing full well, I think, that months later I’d come around to the way of thinking they knew was best all along.

Take, for example, the guide with whom we were paired. After landing and indulging in a restorative morning spa visit (don’t miss the Cleopatra Ritual, a milk bath and massage that banished any post-flight fatigue) and lunch at Byblos, the hotel’s stellar poolside Lebanese restaurant, we met the freelance guide Ibrahim Hamza, who regularly works with guests at the property. An established Egyptologist with a friendly and outgoing manner, his chipper nature encouraged us to forget jet lag and head to the Egyptian Museum on the afternoon we arrived—getting to the storied collection late enough in the day to miss the crowds and get up close and personal with archeological artifacts including nearly 5,000 items associated with King Tutankhamun. With him leading the way, we deftly maneuvered around tour groups and slow walkers, taking in highlights of the world-famous institution, and preparing ourselves for the next day’s visit to the pyramids. A less experienced guide might have let us stop somewhere near Tahrir Square for a cold drink, or even slink back to the hotel for a nap, but Ibrahim encouraged us to power through with a bit of immersion therapy; our next step was the beyond-bustling, 5,000-year-old Khan El-Khalili bazaar, where we fortified ourselves with strong coffee from the famous Naguib Mahfouz Cafe and took his word about what to buy there (knickknacks for friends, a fez for the colleague who demanded one) and what to skip. Ibrahim’s patience and expertise had made two musts of the trip flow seamlessly into one another and turned a day we’d normally have earmarked for rest and recuperation into something much more. We hadn’t been in Cairo a full day yet but had already seen enough of the city—thanks to his tour and a sunset boat cruise along the Nile—to understand its enduring appeal and had brushed up enough on ancient Egypt to feel properly prepped for our next great adventure.

Most people will tell you to visit the pyramids first thing in the morning, but Ibrahim knew better. We might have looked at him warily when he recommended spending our morning touring some of Cairo’s jaw-dropping architecture, including the Hanging Church and Al Rifai Mosque, where Egypt’s royals are buried, and visiting the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization before seeing Giza’s most famous sites in the afternoon, but the suggestion couldn’t have been smarter. After taking in the architecture and exhibitions, including a jaw-dropping collection of 20 royal mummies—not to mention the rare strong air-conditioning—at the museum, we drove a surprisingly short distance to the cluster of three pyramids for which the city is best known. In the middle of the day, there weren’t the crowds you might expect at a world-famous landmark and visiting the sites—including a somewhat harrowing trip inside the exceedingly small spaces in the Great Pyramids that are open to the public; Ibrahim advised against it, but we couldn’t go all that way and not —was as fascinating as it was painless.

A camel ride was vital for capturing social media content, if not helpful for my aversion to horses and similarly large creatures and having our guide on hand helped make clear which of the vendors pleading with us for a tip actually required one. Lunch nearby at Khufu’s allowed us a meal among actual Cairenes, something I’d asked the concierge for in our pre-trip chats, and the backdrop of the three pyramids didn’t hurt.

It's amazing how little we think people listen to what we say around them. Sitting in the car with Ibrahim and our driver over those two days, my husband and I had discussed any number of things we hoped to do, see, or buy. We hadn’t spoken much to the Four Seasons team about shopping—after all, we’re a carry-on-only family and our international splurges tend to be on candy at duty free—but Ibrahim had been listening. So, after lunch as we made our way through Giza, we stopped at stores that could have been custom-made for us; my husband practically needed to be dragged from Cleopatra Palace Perfumes, a gorgeous fragrance emporium where he bought enough scented oils to necessitate checking that bag, and I walked out of the gorgeous textile store Wadi El Melouk with a rug I hadn’t planned to purchase but couldn’t live without. We’d been thrilled to experience the things we knew we wanted to do, but our trip was endlessly enhanced with the things that the people looking after us learned we’d love. And instead of loading up on touristy junk just to stop hawkers from haggling, we walked away with things that we will treasure, all because someone took the time to bring us exactly where we needed to be.

And after a few days in bustling Cairo, where we needed to be next was undoubtedly Sharm El-Shiekh. The resort town at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula was everything that the capital city was not: entirely meant for unwinding. It wasn’t that there was nothing to do at the Four Seasons in Sharm El-Shiekh, which completed a major renovation and expansion in 2022, but that everything that was planned for us was done so with relaxation in mind.

At this point, it wasn’t shocking to find a photo—albeit one we had posted to Instagram—framed in our room upon arrival, but the edible chocolate frame itself was a charming touch. The suite we were in didn’t feel like an oasis from urban madness, the way that the one in Cairo did, but instead like the innermost layer of the resort’s cocoon of luxury—complete with a private pool, an endless and rotating series of snacks that seemingly appeared from nowhere, and the little touches that separate a good place to stay from a great one—like the complete absence of decaf Nespresso pods, which serve no purpose in my life.

Our days in Sharm, as everyone who seems to know what they’re doing there calls it, began to melt together. During the tail end of summer, things were hot enough that we took advantage of the on-call golf carts to get around the property, popping from one pool to another for a change of scenery, making our way to one of the 12 restaurants and bars on site for yet another meal, or ending the night with a belly dancing performance at the indoor-outdoor Citadel Lounge.

Some of our activities at the property came with experience, like how we ate almost daily at Luna, the poolside Mexican restaurant that had food far better than you’d expect nearly 8,000 miles from home (ask for the off-menu empanadas), while others came from the brain trust dedicated to maximizing our experience. We’d gladly signed up for a snorkeling session to swim along the eye-popping nearby Jackson Reef and take in the sites, like a stunning shipwreck, that sit in the water between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. But when the staff at the dive center insisted we come back the next day for a sunset ride to look for dolphins, it was an unexpected delight. And while we didn’t have a bad meal our entire trip, a suggestion to enjoy a Bedouin-style breakfast on the beach allowed us a delicious and memorable morning that no buffet, however delicious, could match. (The staff also seemed truly delighted to engage; on a visit to the spa, one employee spoke to my husband for much longer than anyone should about the various products they offered and what might be best to add to his already-elaborate skincare routine.)

There’s no real reason to leave the property in Sharm El-Sheikh—although some folks recommended a visit to the nearby SOHO Square shopping center, which is home to luxury shopping, local artisans, dining, nightlife, and even bowling, we didn’t make it—but who could say no to a camel safari? On one of our last mornings on property, we made our way to the lobby to meet a guide who drove us about 20 minutes into the desert to a camp where we drank tea, ate fresh bread with black honey, and trotted around on camels to our hearts’ content. Was I jealous of the other visitors who’d opted for speeding over the dunes in the ATVs also available? Maybe just a bit, but after a so-so experience with one of the beasts in Cairo, I was glad to find out that I liked (or perhaps that liked me) and to spend time with the locals who live on site. Would I have hopped into a car with strangers to drive to an unknown destination if the concierge hadn’t insisted? Absolutely not, but by this point I knew better than to question a recommendation from this team—and what had been a sunny seaside few days turned easily into something more memorable with a true sense of place.

In the weeks since we returned, things in Egypt—and the entire Middle East—have become more complicated. It’s a place with a complex history and present, and while any trip should be planned with a traveler’s safety firmly in mind, it feels important to say that visiting the country, meeting the people who live there, and experiencing life in one of the world’s oldest civilizations left me feeling more connected to other people. That’s the secret about traveling; you haul halfway around the world to see ruins, to taste different foods, to shop in different stores, but what stays with you isn’t how different we are from the people who live among those things, but how similar despite our distance. For one, we all want to wake up—whether it’s after a nap or a few hundred years of gold-plated buried—and see our dogs.

Instead of planning my own bucket-list trip to Cairo and beyond, I left it to the Four Seasons. You should, too.
