Set on the 200 square kilometre Thornybush Reserve to the west of the Kruger area in South Africa, Jackalberry Lodge is a decent mid-range property, with guest accommodation in 8 rooms and offering a range of guided safari activities. No minimum age.

Jackalberry Lodge, Location

Jackalberry Lodge is located on the Thornybush Reserve in the Kruger area.

Jackalberry Lodge is located in the Thornybush Reserve in the Kruger area in the northeast region of South Africa.

At 19,445 square kilometres, about the same size as the country of Israel or the state of New Jersey, Kruger is the largest and best known wildlife reserve in Southern Africa, an enormous tract of land which runs for 350km along the borders of Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

First set aside by the government as early as 1898, Kruger became South Africa's first national park in 1926, which is incredibly early. It is largely thanks to this precident that some of the continent's great wildernesses have been saved for future generations.

The reserve lies on the Lowvelt, an area of gently undulating hills that lies between the Mpumulanga Drakensberg and Lebombo mountains to the west and east respectively.

The landscape is largely covered by dense thornscrub, with occasional rocky kopjes, some significant open grasslands and some lovely riverine areas.

There is a full range of wildlife here, notably including elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild-dogs and spotted hyenas. The wildlife tends to be richest in those open grassland areas and in some sweetspot areas sightings can be truly prodigious. In fact that safari here can be so rich that it is sometimes disparagingly referred to as 'big five before breakfast'.

Being such a large reserve, there is a naturally a very wide range of landscapes and experiences to be found here. The best area for you to visit will depend largely on your budget, since accommodation ranges all the way from USD30 up to USD2500 per person per night. The lower end tends to be enormous low quality self-drive restcamps within the main reserve, the higher options tend to be elegant and polished camps on exclusive use private reserves.

Kruger Thornybush Reserve

The 200 square kilometre Thornybush Reserve is a private safari area which lies on the western edge of a cluster of premium private safari areas to the west of the main Kruger National Park.

Although the reserve is fenced, the eastern boundary was dismantled in 2017 to allow free movement of wildlife between here and the main national park, via the intermediate Timbavati Reserve.

Human settlement encroaches only on the southern side of the reserve and does usually have a great impact on the immediate safari experience.

The landscape is the usual mix of gently undulating Lowveld acacia scrub, permeated by a network of small seasonal streams and set against the distant backdrop of the Mpumulanga Drakensberg escarpment.

Although the animals are free to migrate in and out, wildlife viewing is usually reliable year round.

The reserve is shared between around fourteen lodges, handling up to 250 guests, supported by around 40 safari vehicles, making this a relatively busy area.

As a result the camps and lodges in this area are mainly relatively well priced.

Set on the 200 square kilometre Thornybush Reserve to the west of the Kruger area in South Africa, Jackalberry Lodge is a decent mid-range property, with guest accommodation in 8 rooms and offering a range of guided safari activities.

Getting there

The property is almost always accessed by scheduled light aircraft flights from the international airport at Johannesburg and airstrips in the greater Kruger area into the local airstrip, from where it is a vehicle safari of around 20 minutes into camp, with a good chance of early sightings along the way.

It is also possible to include the camp in self-drive trips through Kruger, but this is rarely done since guests travelling at this elevated level tend to be looking for a cleaner and easier experience.

We usually include all the connecting transport for your trip unless  you specifically ask us not to.

Jackalberry Lodge, Lodge

The lodge is centred on a modest main building, leading out to a swimming pool.

Jackalberry Lodge, Lodge Image 1

Jackalberry Lodge is part of The Thornybush Collection, an organisation which is primarily focused on providing reliable and relatively well-priced safari options here in the private reserves of the Kruger area.

Their properties include ...

Kruger : Chapungu Tented Bush Camp Kruger : Jackalberry Lodge Kruger : Monwana Game Lodge Kruger : NKaya Game Lodge Kruger : Nkelenga Tented Camp Kruger : Simbambili Lodge Kruger : Shumbalala Game Lodge Kruger : Thornybush Game Lodge Kruger : Thornybush River Lodge Kruger : Thornybush Waterside Lodge Kruger : Serondella Game Lodge Kruger : Waterbuck Game Lodge

The Thornybush Collection does not specialise in putting together complex safari itineraries, so it best booked through a specialist safari agency such as our own.

Dining options

The food service at Jackalberry Lodge is usually reasonably good quality.

Meals are designed to fit around the daily activity schedule, which usually involves an early breakfast followed by a morning safari activity, then lunch and a siesta back in camp, before afternoon tea, an afternoon safari activity including sundowners and then back to the lodge in time for dinner.

Meals are usually served at separate tables in conventional restaurant style.

Special diets such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher and other variations should not be a problem, so long as you let us know at the time of booking.

Power and connectivity

The property has regular 230Vac electricity available 24 hours and there are no great restrictions on using higher power items such as hair dryers.

Power outlets are South African three pin format. Adaptors are usually available, but it is always worth bringing your own, in which case we recommend buying them in advance rather than trying to get them at the airport on the way, since they often run out.

Child policy

There is no minimum age at this property.

The camp is not specifically geared up for children, is unfenced and could be potentially very dangerous. Adult supervision is essential at all times.

Although the staff and guides will naturally try to tailor the experience to suit all guests, there are no special facilities for children, who are obliged to behave with due consideration for other guests.

There may be higher age limits on certain more risky activities such as walking safari.

Tipping guide

In Africa tipping is definitely not obligatory, but it is commonplace. If you feel that the service provided has been excellent, then you may consider giving tips as follows ...

Lead guide : USD 10 per guest per day Assistant guide or tracker : USD 5 per guest per day Camp staff : USD 5 per guest per day

Staff understand that guests of different nationalities come very different tipping cultures and adjust their expectations accordingly, so you really should tip as you feel comfortable.

Tips are usually given in cash, USD, EUR, GBP and ZAR being the most common currencies. If you are running short of cash or prefer not to carry so much currency, it is often possible to settle tips by bank card.

Russia's Nuclear Deterrent Command Center Imperiled by Winter Freeze—Report

A Russian nuclear deterrent command center in Moscow has been imperiled by power outages that have impacted more than one-quarter of the region's cities amid freezing temperatures, a Russian Telegram channel has reported.

The VChK-OGPU outlet, which purports to have inside information from Russian security forces, reported that the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings—part of the Russian Space Forces, a branch of the country's Aerospace Forces—near Solnechnogorsk in Moscow is without power.

It serves as the space forces early warning network against potential ballistic missile attacks.

The development comes as Russians are reported to be suffering from power outages in their homes in the Moscow region caused by technical issues at plants amid subzero temperatures.

Russian Yars intercontinental ballistic missile launcher

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is about 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov and Naro-Fominsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky and Selyatino are also without power.

The Telegram channel said that at the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings, "the crew...is on duty around the clock."

"It is here that the decision on a retaliatory nuclear strike is executed," the channel said.

Newsweek could not independently verify the report and has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry by email for comment.

Power outages have also been reported in Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, in the country's western Voronezh region, in the southwest city of Volgograd, and in Rostov, which borders Ukraine, a country that Russia has been at war with since February 24, 2022.

On Sunday, two shopping malls in St. Petersburg were forced to close because of problems with light and heating, reported local news outlet 78.ru. Hundreds of other homes in the city have had no electricity, water or heating for days amid temperatures of -25 C (-13 F).

Russian authorities have also been forced to compensate passengers of a train that ran from Samara to St. Petersburg (a 20-hour journey) without heating during -30 C (-22 F) temperatures. Videos circulating on social media showed carriage windows frozen over. A passenger also said the toilet didn't work during the trip because of frozen pipes.
