Scottie Scheffler arrested by police before second round

World number one golfer Scottie Scheffler was charged with assaulting a police officer outside Valhalla Golf Club hours before starting his second round at the 2024 PGA Championship.

Scheffler — who was also charged with third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic — was released by police just in time to take to the course for his tee-off time of 10:08am ET. He impressed with a five-under round of 66 that moved him into third, at nine-under for the tournament.

The Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections, who posted a mugshot of the 27-year-old, said he was booked in at 7.28am local time and released at 8.40am. Scheffler later described the incident as “a big misunderstanding”.

The start of Friday’s second round was delayed by 80 minutes because of an unrelated crash near the course . Louisville police said a shuttle bus had struck and killed a pedestrian outside the golf club. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg later named him as local man John Mills.

Xander Schauffele 36-hole leader at PGA Championship with Morikawa, Scheffler chasing

Xander Schauffele stepped onto the first tee Friday at Valhalla Golf Club after a historic first round at the PGA Championship. He shot a 9-under 62, giving him the 18-hole lead. It tied the men’s major scoring record, the lowest round in PGA Championship history.

Friday’s round for Schauffele didn’t smash records or set career-scoring bests. But it kept the 30-year-old atop the PGA Championship leaderboard heading into the weekend.

Schauffele shot a second-round 68, giving him the 36-hole lead. It’s the second consecutive week Schauffele led a tournament after 36 holes. Last week, Schauffele couldn’t secure the win, thanks to a dominant performance from Rory McIlroy.

The seven-time PGA Tour winner is looking for a different outcome this week, attempting to capture his first major championship.

Watch out for Bryson

This is the second time Bryson DeChambeau has started a major with back-to-back rounds in the 60s.

The other was his win at the 2020 U.S. Open.

Koepka records 8 birdies in second round

It was a roller coaster second round for Brooks Koepka.

He shot a 3-under 68, which consisted of eight birdies.

But it also included three bogeys and a double.

Koepka sits at 7-under-par, five off the lead held by Xander Schauffele.

Tiger birdies 18 but misses cut

Woods 7-over-par

Tiger Woods finished the 2024 PGA Championship at 7-over-par.

He shot a 6-over 77 in his second round.

But Tiger finished the PGA at Valhalla, where he won this event in 2000, with a birdie on 18.

Woods hasn't made a cut at the PGA since 2020.

Best 36-hole score to par in PGA Championship history:

2019 Brooks Koepka, -12 (led by seven)

2024 Xander Schauffele, -12

Here comes Koepka

Brooks Koepka had a double bogey on the par-5 10th.

He's rallied with three birdies since, including one on the par-4 15th.

Koepka has seven birdies on the day and is four off the lead at 8-under-par.

What's at stake for Robert MacIntyre

Robert MacIntyre has never previously been in the top 20 entering the third round of a major.

Where PGA champions need to be after 36 holes

31 of the last 34 winners of the PGA Championship have been in the top 10 through 36 holes.

Over the last 30 years, 91 percent of men's major winners have been in the top 10 entering the third round.

McIlroy going in the wrong direction

Rory McIlroy, who won the PGA the last time it was staged at Valhalla, is going in the wrong direction.

After being 1-under-par through 11 holes, McIlroy records a double-bogey 6 on the par-4 12th.

He is 4-under-par for the tournament, eight back of the lead.

Needs a strong finish coming in to get back in the mix.

Inside the most bizarre day in major golf with the arrest of Scottie Scheffler

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The most shocking day in golf major championship history began with a tragedy, and saw Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 male player in the world, arrested, booked into a local jail and released in time to tee off.

It was just after 5 a.m. on a rainy Friday morning that police were called to the street outside of Valhalla Golf Club. A shuttle bus traveling down Shelbyville Road struck and killed John Mills, a local man working the PGA Championship for a tournament vendor.

The fatal wreck caused traffic to be shut down in both directions outside of Valhalla, which is hosting the major championship for the first time in a decade. Scheffler arrived at the scene an hour later, amid a steady rain and flashing police lights, seeking to enter the property and begin preparation for an 8:48 a.m. tee time for Round 2 of the PGA Championship. A police and security presence outside of a major championship routine is typical, even common. “I drive by cops like that probably 10 times a year,” one PGA Tour swing coach said, speaking on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the matter.

What happened next was anything but common. When Scheffler, traveling eastbound, attempted to move his vehicle into the westbound lane, according to the Louisville Police Department arrest report, detective Bryan Gillis attempted to stop the vehicle. The police report said Scheffler continued forward, “dragging Detective Gillis to the ground,” and noted that he suffered injuries that required medical treatment, as well as irreparable damage to his $80 uniform pants. Jeff Darlington, an ESPN NFL reporter assigned to cover the second golf major of the year, happened to be on the scene and watched it unfold, reporting that Scheffler’s vehicle moved 10 to 20 yards before coming to a final stop.

Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, said Scheffler was originally instructed to go in and that the officer directing traffic was not part of the event traffic detail. “So that’s where the miscommunication arose and that’s why we’re here,” Romines said Friday morning.

When Scheffler did stop, he lowered his window and the officer reached in, grabbed Scheffler’s arm and pulled the door open, Darlington reported. The officer then put Scheffler in handcuffs and pushed him against the car. As Scheffler was escorted toward a police car in the rainy dark, a video filmed by Darlington showed Scheffler turning to say, “Can you help?”

“You need to get out of the way,” another officer told Darlington. “Right now, he’s going to jail, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Schauffele drops a shot, lead is 1

Xander Schauffele makes his first bogey of the week.

The last player to go the first 36 holes of a PGA Championship without a single bogey is Hale Irwin in 1993.

Schauffele falls to 12-under-par, one ahead of Collin Morikawa.

Schauffele improves to 13-under-par

Xander Schauffele is now 13-under.

The lowest 36-hole score to par in men's major championship history is 14 under by Jordan Spieth at the 2015 Masters.

Will Zalatoris: Players discussed delaying, canceling PGA Championship second round

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A small group of players discussed not playing the second round of the PGA Championship as scheduled following the death of a pedestrian outside of Valhalla Golf Club, as well as the arrest of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

Will Zalatoris detailed the 20-30 minute conversation, which took place in the Valhalla locker room, to a small group of reporters after his round Friday afternoon. The group of unnamed players considered approaching the PGA of America about the cancellation or delay of Friday’s play, he said.

“Some of the guys were talking about, wondering if we should even play today,” Zalatoris said. “At one point there were a group of guys in the locker room talking about going to the PGA of America about it, but I think it was dead in the water in the locker room. It was bizarre. We just didn’t know … when Scottie was going to get out, any of the details.”

Tee times were delayed by one hour and 20 minutes on Friday after a shuttle bus struck and killed John Mills, who was working for a tournament vendor. The PGA moved the first tee times from 7:15 a.m. ET to 8:35.

Scottie Scheffler climbs PGA Championship leaderboard hours after arrest

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Scottie Scheffler, the world’s most dominant golfer, rose up the leaderboard of the PGA Championship on Friday, hours after he was arrested while trying to navigate a traffic backup caused by a crash that killed a pedestrian outside Valhalla Golf Club.

In an extraordinary sequence of events over about three hours, Scheffler was handcuffed while arriving at the course before sunrise, booked while wearing an orange jumpsuit in downtown Louisville and driven back to the course with stunned crowds following his every move as his newly hired local lawyer told reporters that he would comply with an investigation into his interaction with a police officer who was directing traffic. Scheffler faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

Scheffler’s day on the course finally began at 10:08 a.m. ET, when he teed off nearly four hours after his arrest. He went on to shoot a 5-under-par 66, climbing into a tie for third on the leaderboard. Scheffler, who said he began stretching in a jail cell Friday in hopes of returning to Valhalla in time for his tee time, said after the round his head was “spinning.”

“It was a chaotic situation and a big misunderstanding,” Scheffler said.

Scottie Scheffler said he feels his head is “still spinning” after the sequence of events he experienced on Friday. He was arrested and handcuffed Friday morning while arriving at the course before sunrise, booked in an orange jumpsuit in downtown Louisville, then returned to Valhalla Golf Club and shot a second-round 66 at the PGA Championship.

Scheffler faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. His arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday at 9 a.m., according to online court records, two days after the PGA Championship is scheduled to end.

Asked to encapsulate what transpired, Scheffler described his pre-round routine, which took place in jail.

“I did spend some time stretching in a jail cell that was a first for me,” Scheffler said after his second round.

Scheffler said his “main focus after getting arrested” was whether he could continue playing in the PGA Championship. He said that he was in “shock” when he got arrested and that he was “shaking for an hour,” trying to calm down.

While getting fingerprinted in jail, Scheffler said a police officer offered him a sandwich.

“Sure, I’ll take a sandwich, I didn’t eat breakfast yet,” Scheffler said.

Scheffler teed off at 10:08 a.m., nearly four hours after his arrest. He described Friday's round as “pretty good.”

“It was nice to be able to put together a solid round today for sure,” Scheffler said.

This isn’t pleasant to watch: Tiger Woods, a 15-time major winner, has carded his second triple-bogey seven in the space of three holes.

This time his game deserts him on the fourth, having also bogeyed the third. He’s now eight over — seven over for the round — and his hopes of making it to the weekend are long gone.

2024 PGA Championship Round 2: Tiger Woods misses cut, Xander Schauffele leads

A bizarre day at the 2024 PGA Championship has come to an end.

Friday started in chaos after tournament worker John Mills was struck and killed by a shuttle bus as he arrived to work outside of the Valhalla Golf Course in Louisville, Kentucky, subsequently delaying Round 2 tee times.

Mills’ tragic death was unfortunately overshadowed by the arrest of World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler , who faces four criminal charges, including second degree assault on a police officer, following a dustup with a Louisville police officer directing traffic at the course following the fatal accident.

"I feel like my head is still spinning,” Scheffler said after shooting 5-under on the day despite his arrest. "I definitely never imagined ever going to jail, and I definitely never imagined going to jail the morning before one of my tee times, for sure.”

Scheffler, the 2024 Masters champion, is currently tied for fourth place at 9-under. The top three is rounded out by Americans Xander Schauffele (-12) , Collin Morikawa (-11) and Sahith Theegala (-10).

Play was suspended at 8:41 p.m. ET on Friday due to darkness with a handful of players left on the course. The projected cut is set at 1-under par .

USA TODAY Sports provided updates, highlights and more throughout Round 2 on Friday:

Scottie Scheffler emerges from wild ordeal looking like a real person

Just after 6 a.m. on Friday, the best golfer on the planet found himself in handcuffs being led into a police car. Shortly after that, he was in a jail cell, doing some pre-round stretching in hopes that he could play the second round of the PGA Championship. And a few hours later, he was in front of reporters after shooting 66, putting him right in contention to win his third major championship.

Golf is a sport of monotonous routines, requiring a certain serenity of the mind and body for players to perform at the highest level. Or at least so we thought . — Dan Wolken

Tiger Woods ends second round with birdie, still misses cut

It’s official — Tiger Woods is out . He ended his second round at the PGA Championship on a high-note with a birdie on No. 18 to bring him to 6-over for the day and 7-over for the tournament, but he still sits 8 strokes above the projected cut line at 1-under.

It marks only the 13th time in Woods’ illustrious career that he’s missed the cut at a major.

He posted three birdies, three bogeys and two triple-bogeys during the round at Valhalla Golf Club, the same course he won the 2000 PGA Championship.

Who didn’t make the cut at PGA Championship?

It looks like Tiger Woods’ time at the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club — the course where he won the 2000 PGA Championship — is ending early. Woods is currently 8 over par through 16 holes on the second round, 10 strokes off the projected cut line at 1-under.

He’s not the only one below the cut line. Spain’s John Rahm (E), England’s Matt Fitzpatrick (E), Americans Dustin Johnson (+1), Wyndham Clark (+4), Phil Mickelson (+4) and South Korea’s Si Woo Kim (+5) are among the notable golfers who are projected to miss the cut at the PGA Championship.

'I was never angry. I was just in shock'

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On Friday morning,  Scottie Scheffler  stretched in a jail cell, preparing for a round of golf he didn’t know he’d be able to play.

“I didn't know what time it was. I didn't know what was going on,” Scheffler said. “When I was sitting in like the holding cell, there was a TV there, and I could see myself on the TV on ESPN.”

If Scheffler wasn’t all that interesting as the world’s No. 1 golfer, that’s no longer the case .

In rainy conditions and with huge crowds roaring their support, Scheffler showed up with a jailhouse sandwich in his stomach and shot a 5-under-par 66 during  Friday’s second round at the 2024 PGA Championship,  bringing him to 9 under for the tournament. — Gentry Estes , Nashville Tennessean

Tiger Woods on the verge of missing cut

Tigers Woods is almost out of time. The four-time PGA Championship winner currently sits at 8-over for the tournament through 14 holes after picking up back-to-back bogeys on No. 11 and No. 12. The cut currently is projected at 1-under , meaning Woods is 10 strokes away from making it into the weekend. Woods has made 18 of the last 22 cuts at the PGA Championship, according to the ESPN broadcast.

Woods won the the 2000 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

Tiger Woods hits another bogey

Disaster struck on No. 11 for Woods after he posted back-to-back birdies on No. 7 and 8, appearing to pick up some momentum heading into the back nine of the second round, but his short game got in the way again. Woods three-putted on No. 11 to finish with a bogey, his second of the day. He also had two triple bogeys in the second round. He’s back to 7-over for the tournament and in danger of missing the cut (1-under).

Xander Schauffele back in the lead

American Xander Schauffele is atop the leaderboard. He sits at 12-under through 11 holes, leading fellow American Collin Morikawa by one stroke and American Scottie Scheffler by three strokes.

Schauffele has posted four birdies in the second round to get him in sole possession of the lead, but a bogey on No. 11 cut into his cushion. Schauffele is vying for his first major title. His best showing at the PGA Championship was a 10th-place finish in 2020.

Watch: Tiger Woods almost hit a hole in one

Woods nearly aced No. 8. He drove a ball nearly 170 yards on the 173-yard, Par-3 hole and tapped in a putt to post a birdie. It marks Woods second consecutive birdie after getting off to a rough start in the second round and posting two triple bogeys. He’s back to 6-over for the tournament. The projected cut is at 1-under.

Earlier in the day, Swedish golfer Sebastian Soderberg aced the same hole, the first of the week.

Tiger Woods saves par on No. 5

Driving hasn’t been a problem with Woods so far. Hole No. 5 (Par-4, 468 yards) was no different. He drove a ball down the middle of the fairway at 171 mph. It’s the short game that has been missing so far in the second round. Woods barely missed the green his next stroke and chipped the ball near the flag stick to set up a par putt that he sunk.

To make matters worse, the projected cut line has moved to 1-under for the tournament , meaning Woods has even more ground to cover. He’s 8-over through five holes.

Tiger Woods' struggles continues with another triple bogey

Things looked brighter after Woods found the middle of the fairway with his first stroke on Par-4, No. 4, but he missed the green on his next shot after the ball hit a lump in the green and rolled off completely. His next shot ended up in the bunker and he wasn’t able to clear it with his next stroke, ending back up in the bunker. Woods chipped the ball onto the green on his fifth stroke and two-putted it in for a triple bogey, his second of the day. He sits at 8-over par on the tournament.

Tiger Woods posts a triple bogey

Tiger Woods’ second-round at the Valhalla Golf Club is not off to a good start. After shooting a par-4 on the opening hole, Woods recorded a triple bogey and a bogey on hole No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Woods started the second round 1-over and now moves to 5-over for the tournament. He has some major ground to make up in order to make the cut, which is projected at 1-under.

Collin Morikawa increases lead, Tiger begins second round

Collin Morikawa (-12) birdied five of his last six holes and is three shots ahead of Thomas Detry, Mark Hubbard and Xander Schauffele.

Tiger Woods has teed off and begins his round tied for 84th place at 1-over. He has some work to do as the projected cut line is even par.

Collin Morikawa surges into lead

Collin Morikawa made his third straight birdie at No. 6 and now owns the outright lead at 10-under. Scottie Scheffler is two shots back with birdies on No. 2 and 4 on the back nine.

PGA releases statement, man killed identified

"Our primary concern today remains with the family of John Mills, who lost his life in a tragic accident early this morning while reporting to work," the PGA of America said in a statement. "As it relates to the incident involving Scottie Scheffler, we are fully cooperating as local authorities review what took place. While the legal process plays out, questions should to be directed to Scheffler's attorney or local authorities."

Mark Hubbard, Collin Morikawa now tied for lead

Hubbard, who is looking for his first major title, nailed a birdie on 18 and is tied for the lead with Xander Schauffele at 9-under. Heading to the back nine, Hubbard finished 3-under on the front. Morikawa has birdied No. 4 and 5 on his back nine to grab a share of the lead also.

Rising scores despite heavy rain

Despite a steady rain that has been falling all morning at Valhalla, scores keep rising.

Xander Schauffele (-9) will tee off later, but Mark Hubbard is one shot back. Collin Morikawa, Austin Eckroat, and Thomas Detry are all crammed in at 7-under. Scottie Scheffler started his back nine with a par on hole No. 1, and he is sitting at -6 under for the tournament.

Mark Hubbard, Jason Day making noise on Day 2

Hubbard has birdied two of his first four holes starting his second round, and Jason Day finished his front nine with three birdies to get him to 3-under. Alex Noren also has three birdies on his first nine holes and finds himself three shots from the lead.

Xander Schauffele's lead shrinking early in second round

Golfers starting their second round in the morning are inching closer to the lead. Mark Hubbard is now two shots after his birdie on No. 10, with Thomas Detry and Collin Morikawa each adding a birdie to their respective scorecards to get to 6-under. Harris English has three birdies on the front nine to get him to 5-under.

Leader Xander Schauffele (-9) is scheduled to tee off at 2:38 p.m. ET.

Scottie Scheffler gets another birdie

Scheffler started the day with a birdie at No. 10, then bogeyed No. 11. He got right back on track on No. 12 to get another birdie and is now back to 5-under, four shots from the lead.

First ace of the tournament

Sebastian Söderberg made a hole-in-one on the Par 3 No. 8 for the first ace of the PGA Championship. That shot brought to even par for the tournament and 2-under for the day.

Louisville police release incident report on Scheffler arrest

Louisville authorities released their version of events that led to Scottie Scheffler being arrested on Friday morning. According to the arrest complaint, an officer was directing traffic due to an accident involving a fatality when Scheffler "tried to gain access to the course."

The officer, dressed in a reflective rain jacket, stopped Scheffler and attempted to give him instructions, but the subject "refused to comply and accelerated forward," dragging the officer to the ground, damaging his $80 uniform pants "beyond repair." The officer, who was identified as Detective Bryan Gillis, was taken to the hospital for further treatment and "suffered pain, swelling to abrasions to his left wrist and knee."

Scheffler birdies first hole of the day

If Scottie Scheffler was distracted by this morning's events, it didn't show it on the Par 5 No. 10. After hitting the rough on his first shot, Scheffler steadied himself and made a birdie to start his round. He is currently 5-under for the tournament.

Scottie Scheffler begins Round 2 at PGA Championship

Scottie Scheffler now switches his mind to golf.

The World No. 1 golfer has teed off at Valhalla, reaching the rough on hole No. 10. Scheffler shot a 4-under par in the first round, good for a tie for 11th place.

Scottie Scheffler makes statement about Friday's arrest

ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed Scottie Scheffler's morning arrest and recorded it on social media, shared a statement he received from Scheffler :

"This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today. Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective."

PGA of America statement

The PGA of America released a statement about Friday morning's events:

"This morning we were devastated to learn that a worker with one of our vendors was tragically struck and killed by a shuttle bus outside Valhalla Golf Club. This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship. We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones."

Scottie Scheffler's lawyer addresses golfer's arrest

Steve Romines, a lawyer representing Scottie Scheffler after his Friday morning arrest, spoke to the media moments after Scheffler left Louisville Metro Police Department.

"He was going into Valhalla to work out and get ready for his tee time. (Police) were directing traffic, he held his media credential out and was going in like they've been instructed to. Apparently there had been a traffic accident, or maybe even a fatality down the road, and that had changed the traffic patterns, and he was unaware of that. And, I think the officer that was directing traffic, was maybe not part of the event traffic detail and so that's where the communication, miscommunication arose and that's why we're here."

When asked what happens next, Romines said it had not yet been decided whether he would play golf Friday and "we'll just deal with the court system as it comes."

Is Scottie Scheffler golfing at PGA Championship on Friday?

Scottie Scheffler is inside the clubhouse at Valhalla Golf Club, and it appears he will be able to make his 10:08 a.m. ET tee time.

There was some question whether Scheffler would make it back to Valhalla after being detained and charged with second degree assault on a police officer, which is a felony, as well as criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic.

USGA Rule 5.3 states the committee can decide that exceptional circumstances prevented a golfer from starting on time. Under this provision there is no breach of rule and no penalty. It does not appear that it will be applicable in Scheffler's case since he has arrived at the course just less than an hour before his tee time.

Scottie Scheffler arrives for PGA Championship

Scottie Scheffler was dropped off at the clubhouse at Valhalla just after 9:10 a.m. ET.

As Scheffler exited his vehicle he was asked by ESPN reporter Marty Smith if he had any comment about this morning's incident.

"I love you, Marty," Scheffler said, with a smile.

PGA Championship underway; Scheffler on way to PGA Championship

As a chaotic morning continues, golf has started at Valhalla with the first handful of groups teeing off.

Scottie Scheffler, who has a 10:08 a.m. ET tee time, has been released from Louisville Metro Police Department and is en route to the golf course.

"When Scheffler exited the vehicle, the officer shoved Scheffler against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs," Darlington posted on X (formerly Twitter ). "He is now being detained in the back of a police car."

Darlington posted video of police detaining Scheffler in which an officer told him that the golfer was going to jail. Records from Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections show he was booked at 7:28 a.m. Scheffler is now scheduled to tee off at 10:08 a.m.

Scottie scheffler planning to play next week on pga tour after 'hectic' week at 2024 pga championship, share this article.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Those who followed Scottie Scheffler on Sunday at the 2024 PGA Championship were served an excellent round of club with a side of open mic night at the Louisville Comedy Club off Main Street.

Yells of “Free Scottie!” and variations of “Look out! There are two police officers right there” or “He’s the man in blue, get him, officer!” were heard on every hole out at Valhalla Golf Club in the final round of the second men’s major of the year. The officers who have walked with Scheffler inside the ropes the last few days have been able to brush off the amateur jokers, while Scheffler claims he hardly heard any.

“I think when you’re out there inside the ropes, I don’t really hear too much of it. It’s nice to hear your name. I heard a lot of “Scottie” chants. I didn’t hear too many of the “free Scottie” chants, but I definitely heard a lot of “Scottie” chants,” said Scheffler, who must be able to block out the word free. “Like I said, it’s great to have the support of the fans. Being able to play out here in front of them week in, week out is one of the greatest joys of my life for sure. So being able to do that this week and play another major championship, it was fun. Obviously the results weren’t what I was hoping for at the beginning of the week, but overall I’m proud of how I fought this week.”

After a 2-over 73 on Saturday, his first over-par performance in 42 rounds so far this year, Scheffler bounced back with his best showing of the week, a superb 6-under 65 that featured just one bogey on the first hole. Scheffler walked off the course at 13 under for the tournament, T-8 on the leaderboard.

“It was obviously not what I was hoping for going into the week, but overall I’m proud of how I fought this week, and excited to get home and get ready for next week,” he said. But how soon will he be able to get back to Texas? Following his wild arrest on Friday morning before his second-round tee time that led to four charges, including a felony, Scheffler has an arraignment set for Tuesday at 9 a.m. ET. He’s also scheduled to play next week’s 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club near his home in Dallas.

“I think it’s all up in the air. I’m not really sure what the next days have in store,” Scheffler said of his sticky situation. “I think I’m able to get home tonight, but we’ll see when I leave here. I haven’t really had much chance to assess the situation off the course. I signed my card and then came straight over here. So we’ll see, but hopefully we’ll be able to get home tonight.”

For a 27-year-old with a clean history and laid back, private life, Scheffler has handled this week as well as could be expected. Four hours after his Friday arrest he shot a 5-under 66 and birdied two of his first three holes fresh out of a cell. His Saturday 73 could have easily been chalked up to the gravity of his situation finally setting in after the adrenaline wore off, or the fact he was without his caddie and good friend Ted Scott, who left the tournament for a day to attend his daughter’s high school graduation. When asked what was different between Saturday and Sunday, Scheffler didn’t take the easy out.

“I think I would attribute it mostly to a bad day. I think when you come out here to compete, you’re out here competing, you’re doing what you can throughout the course of the round to post a score and I wasn’t able to get that done yesterday,” he explained. “Did I feel like myself? Absolutely not. Was my warm-up the way it usually is and the distractions were they normally are? Absolutely not. But I’m not going to sit here and say that’s why I went out and played a bad round of golf yesterday.”

“Yesterday obviously was quite frustrating and a bit of a different day, but overall proud of how I fought this week,” Scheffler added. “Was fortunate to be out here competing, doing what I love.”

If Scheffler thought he had fan support this week, just wait until his fellow Texans rally around him in Fort Worth. That is, assuming he’s able to tee it up. No Laying Up’s Kevin Van Valkenburg reported Sunday morning that Jefferson County prosecutors are planning to drop the charges against Scheffler early next week.

Until then, we wait.

PGA Championship 2024: Prize money payouts at Valhalla hit another record-breaking number

2152915900

It’s a sign of the times in men’s professional golf. The question wasn’t whether the PGA of America was going to increase its prize money payout for each golfer at this year’s PGA Championship to another record payday. Rather, it was by how much.

That amount turned out to be $1 million, the PGA of America announcing Saturday that its overall purse had jumped to $18.5 million. On Sunday, Xander Schauffele birdied the 72nd hole to shoot 65 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville to take home $3.33 million.

To put that number in perspective, just four years ago at TPC Harding Park, the overall purse was $11 million. But then the PGA of America bumped the amount by $1 million for the 2021 PGA at Kiawah, $3 million more for the 2022 PGA at Southern Hills and another $2.5 million for the 2023 PGA at Oak Hill.

Here's a look at the evolution of the prize money payout in the PGA Championship, offering a revealing glance at the trajectory of golf purses in general over the years:

Year: Winner's Pay, Total Purse 1916: $500, $2,580 (first year of the event) 1931: $1,000, $7,200 (first year winner's pay increased) 1953: $5,000, $20,700 (first year winner's pay was $5K) 1958: $5,500, $39,388 (first year of stroke play; winner's amount actually decreased that year) 1965: $25,000, $149,700 1978: $50,000, $300,240 1983: $100,000, $608,099 1988: $160,000, $1,000,000 (first year with a $1M total purse) 1993: $300,000, $1,702,750 1998: $540,000, $2,886,800 2000: $900,000, $5,031,100 (first year with a $5M total purse) 2003: $1,080,000, $5,938,300 (first year with $1M-plus to the winner) 2009: $1,350,000, $7,484,500 2014: $1,800,000, $9,913,000 2018: $1,980,000, $11,000,000 2021: $2,160,000, $12,000,000 2022: $2,700,000, $15,000,000 2023: $3,150,000, $17,500,000

The latest jump, however, leaves the PGA Championship’s purse shy of the $20 million paydays offered in the PGA Tour’s new signature events as well as the $20 million paydays being played for individually on the LIV Golf circuit.

Here is a breakdown of the prize money payouts for each place in the field.

Scottie Scheffler, world's top golfer, charged with assaulting a police officer outside PGA Championship

The world's top-ranked golfer, Scottie Scheffler, was detained by police after he was accused of dragging an officer with his car Friday outside the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky, according to an incident report.

Footage posted on X by ESPN's Jeff Darlington appeared to show Scheffler being led away by officers. Scheffler appears to turn to Darlington as he is being led away and asks, "Can you please help me?"

Scheffler’s attorney Steve Romines called the arrest a misunderstanding and told The Associated Press they "will litigate the case as it goes."

In an interview with NBC news from Louisville, Romines conveyed Scheffler's account of what happened Friday morning before the second round of the tournament.

Romines said officers who were investigating and handling traffic for a fatal traffic accident down the road weren’t communicating with those who were handling event traffic for the tournament.

So when Scheffler was given directions for how he should get onto the grounds to prepare for his morning rounds, which he followed, Romines said an "officer on a different unit took issue with Scottie following the directions he was given and subsequently placed him under arrest."

The incident happened before the second round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club. It was set to begin at 7:15 a.m. but was delayed by more than an hour after a man was fatally struck by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m.

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg identified the man as John Mills. PGA of America said he was an employee with one of its vendors and was reporting to work.

"This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship. We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones," the organization said in a statement.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear weighed in on the accident, saying on X , "Our hearts are broken, and we continue to pray for the victim’s family."

"The events that occurred afterward are the unfortunate result of this tragic incident, and we are hopeful that all parties involved can come to a resolution," Beshear added .

Scottie Scheffler arrested during PGA Tour in Louisville Kentucky

The accident caused traffic outside the club to be backed up for about a mile in both directions, the AP reported. The Louisville Metro Police Department said in a statement that "all lanes of traffic at the scene were closed while the fatality investigation occurred." The police department was also at the scene directing traffic, the statement said.

An officer was directing traffic into the club when Scheffler, who was in the eastbound lane, allegedly drove into the westbound lane "to avoid backed up traffic," according to a police incident report.

The officer stopped Scheffler and attempted to give him instructions, but the golfer "refused to comply and accelerated forward" dragging the officer to the ground, the report says.

The officer "suffered pain, swelling, and abrasions to his uniform pants," it states.

The LMPD said an officer who was directing traffic had an "encounter with a motorist" who was trying to enter a restricted area which "ultimately led to the driver being arrested."

Darlington said Scheffler was attempting to drive around the crash scene. An officer told the golfer to stop, but he allegedly kept going, ESPN reported.

An officer "attached himself" to the side of Scheffler’s vehicle and Scheffler stopped as he turned into the entrance of the club, according to ESPN. When Scheffler rolled down his window to talk to the officer, he was allegedly pulled out of the vehicle and handcuffed.

When asked about the police report that said Scheffler dragged and injured an officer, Romines said "that did not happen."

"If we need to litigate that issue, we will litigate it," Romines said. "He did not drag any officer. He did not injure any officer. As soon as he received the directions — conflicting directions — to stop, he stopped."

While Romines was not there, he cited eye witnesses and videos he’s seen of the arrest that he said "confirmed that it did not happen."

Romines also made it clear that "there was never a time in which … Scottie Scheffler tried to drive through any accident scene or anything else," referring to the nearby fatality.

"He didn’t do anything wrong," Romines insisted, noting that the charges against Scheffler "will either be dropped and dismissed or we’ll go to trial."

Jail records show that he was booked on charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from officers directing traffic.

An arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday, at which Scheffler will appear unless it is moved, Romines said.

"It’s not like he’s going to plead guilty to something," Romines said. "He didn’t do anything wrong. He was following directions in a chaotic situation."

Romines said he was contacted about the incident early this morning and that his client spent about an hour and a half in jail and was later released on his own recognizance. Scheffler did not have to post any bail to be released, but his release came with the stipulation that he has no contact with the arresting officer.

Romines acknowledged that "anything can happen" between now and the Tuesday arraignment, or during the process of litigation, but what Romines said he wants to see is the arresting officer’s body camera footage.

"We believe it’ll confirm what the witnesses have said," Romines said. "As soon as we get that body cam video, we believe the case will probably be dismissed."

Scheffler is "upset about the whole situation," Romines said, adding that "it’s distracted from the golf tournament."

More than anything, Romines said Scheffler is upset "about the tragedy of the individual that lost his life and somehow this is in any way related to that," but for now, Scheffler is "doing his job and, you know, playing golf the best he can and, you know, he’ll let the court system deal with it."

Scheffler called it a misunderstanding.

"This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do," he said in a statement shared on X by PGA Tour.

Scottie Scheffler Arrested in Louisville, Kentucky.

"I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today," he added.Scheffler offered his condolences to the family of the man struck by the shuttle and said "it truly puts everything in perspective."

Greenberg said it was "unfortunate" that an incident took place between Scheffler and the officer.

"LMPD is fully investigating this incident and the legal process will proceed. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation," he said in a statement. "We remain focused on the tragic loss of life and will share more information on both of these matters as available."

PGA of America said it is "fully cooperating as local authorities review what took place" between the officer and Scheffler.

Scheffler was released from jail and returned to the club just before 9:30 a.m. He teed off shortly after 10 a.m. to an outburst of cheers. Video posted on X by ESPN’s Marty Smith showed fans yelling "Free Scottie" after his tee shot. He was 7 under par, two shots from lead, after going 3 under through 12 holes. In Friday's second round, Scheffler shot 5 under par. He’s now a combined 9 under par for the first two rounds. That means he finished one stroke better today, after the arrest, than he did yesterday.

Scheffler at the podium says "my situation will be handled."

"I did spend some time stretching in a jail cell," Scheffler said.

The golfer, 27, turned pro in 2018 and has appeared in the PGA championships four times. He won the Master’s in April, and also in 2022.
