Safari Snorkels

Protecting your engine from dust, snow and water ingestion is essential for keeping your Courier on the tracks and not the side lines. A Safari snorkel will ensure that clean, dry air is always available, regardless of the conditions.

Manufactured in Australia from premium quality polyethylene, Safari snorkels are UV stable and incredibly resilient to withstand the harsh Australian environment. All systems are individually designed and undergo thorough research and testing prior to being tooled for production.

Safari snorkels are positively sealed to provide the ultimate in engine protection during river crossings and dusty conditions, while the quality fixtures and fittings ensure superior appearance and long term durability.

Install one before your next trip and breathe easier knowing that your engine is protected by a Safari snorkel.

Clever Design

Safari Snorkel

Safari’s Air Ram system is a pivotal and functional attribute of the snorkel; CAD and lab tested, the Air Ram is designed to simultaneously remove the maximum volume of water from the incoming air stream, while delivering the maximum airflow to your vehicle’s engine.

Durable Materials

Safari Snorkel Set Up - Sunshine Coast

Safari snorkels utilise a UV stable polyethylene body which ensures a strong and robust fitting to the outside of your 4×4, complemented by high-grade stainless steel and plated hardware for corrosion resistance on all internal and external fittings and fixtures. All Safari connection ducting is custom designed and tooled and is manufactured from EPDM moulded rubber, rated to a continual 130°C operating temperature. There is nothing better!

Vehicle Specific

Safari Snorkel on Cruiser - ARB

Nothing fits like Safari. As a result of the intricate design process, working with a combination of CAD modelling and actual vehicles, Safari snorkels are manufactured to integrate seamlessly. Where other products might look similar, none are developed with such attention to detail from the air-box back to the Air Ram to work perfectly with your vehicle.

Protect your vehicle with the best.

Dive Into The Sunshine Coast’s Best Snorkelling Spots

By Urban List Writers

22nd Dec 2023

safari snorkel sunshine coast

We don’t know about you, but sometimes we at Urban List feel like all we do is eat, drink, sleep and repeat. So it’s time to mix it up. Let’s make the most of the great outdoors, especially in a place as naturally beautiful as the Sunshine Coast/Gubbi Gubbi country. Instead of a brunch date this weekend, how about a spot of snorkelling?

Snorkelling and exploring the marine life of the deep is not just breathtaking, but arguably the best stress therapy going around. Just bubbles, splashes, and the greatest sound of all: silence. Dive into the best snorkelling spots on the Sunshine Coast.

Fancy a swim with the gentle giants of the sea? Dive and snorkel company Sunreef takes you up close and personal with whales just 15 minutes off Mooloolaba, and those who are lucky enough to experience and encounter them claim it’s “life changing”.

Easily some of the best snorkelling on the Sunshine Coast, Sunreef provides all the required wetsuits and snorkel gear and say the winter months are best, when the big fellas are migrating. Once a whale is sighted, swimmers can jump into the water while holding onto a floatation line attached to the boat.

North Stradbroke Island

safari snorkel sunshine coast

Drifting through the calm waters of Amity Point will make for some fun, chilled snorkel time, but for serious sea-life explorers, you might want to make a bee-line to Point Lookout where all the marine action is. Want to take things to the next level and get cuddly with some manta rays?

Manta Lodge & Scuba Centre  runs boats out to Manta Bommie—ranked in Australia’s top ten dive sites—and is a cleaning station for the migratory rays. There’s even octopus, lionfish, and leopard and babboo sharks. Not to mention the guitar sharks.

Mudjimba Island

Home to an abundance of marine life including dolphins, turtles, stingrays, crayfish, wobbegongs, eel, and starfish, the best snorkelling is on the western side of Mudjimba Island (also known as Old Woman Island) where there’s a massive ledge of vibrant coral and large schools of fish reside.

Don't have a boat to get you across to the island? No need to worry—Sunreef Mooloolaba have just launched a Snorkel Mudjimba Island package ($99) which includes the 15-minute boat ride each way, along with all of the snorkelling gear you need (think: mask, wetsuit, fins and snorkel).

Lake McKenzie

Image Credit: Fraser Island | TEQ

Famous for its sand as white as your mother’s crisp sheets, Lake McKenzie  on K'gari is like a giant, luxury resort swimming pool plonked in the middle of wild and rugged forest, only far more naturally beautiful.

The silica sand acts as a filter giving the water its purity, and while the lake can’t support too much life, you will still find a few sneaky schools of fish. If you’re desperate to get face down into those endless shades of pristine blues and greens, with the sun kissing your back, then be sure to get your glide on here.

Point Arkwright

Needing your cute turtle fix? Hightail it straight to Point Arkwright in Coolum where there’s a shallow reef just off the cliff’s shore which is home to the gentle giants and many other marine life.

The only slight difficulty here, is the reef is quite tricky to get to being at the base of the point’s cliffs and the currents can get a little strong, so we’re reserving this one for the more advanced snorkellers.  When the seas are calm, snorkelling during winter is very popular but we recommend packing your wettie.

Moreton Island

best-snorkelling-sunshine-coast

Just an hour from Brisbane, the Tangalooma Wrecks offer some of the best and most popular snorkelling in South-East Queensland. There are 15 wrecks which were deliberately sunk a few years back, creating a man-made reef; a pretty decent idea considering the thriving ocean life these wrecks have adopted.

Expect turtles, wobbegongs, dugongs, and of course, fish galore. Chasing pretty coral? Flinders Reef is five kilometres northwest of the island and features around 100 species of coral and 200 fish species. Pack your underwater camera 'cause you'll snap  some epic pictures to pimp your Insta.

Raper Shoal

A popular fishing spot, Raper Shoal is about 500 metres off Currimundi Beach, and offers a large rocky formation surrounded by plenty of sand. The rock is covered in some great coral with plenty of creatures to explore around the edges of the drop-off.

So while you’re out in your tinny getting the catch of the day, don’t forget your snorkel gear, too. Oh, and with plenty of dolphins out that way you might even get a wave from Flipper. Without a doubt, one of the best snorkelling spots on the Sunshine Coast.

SUP, Dive & Snorkel: Dive into the waters of the Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast is blessed with beaches and crystal-clear waters as far as the eye can see so why not make the most of it and dive in for real?

SUP, Dive & Snorkel: Dive into the waters of the Sunshine Coast

Forget feeling the sand between your toes and discover the best spots to dive, snorkel and paddle around the coast. No matter your skill level, the Sunshine Coast really does have it all - with pristine beaches and warm sub-tropical waters to boot.

Dive: Ex-HMAS Brisbane

Arguably one of the world’s best wreck sites, the Ex-HMAS Brisbane, a decommissioned guided missile destroyer, is located just 2.9 nautical miles off the coast of Mooloolaba .

The ship was scuttled in July 2005 and the 133-metre wreck is sitting upright on her keel, lodged in sand 27 metres below sea level. The main decks sit at a depth of 15 metres with the ship's funnel only three metres below the surface making it accessible for both beginner divers and offering something for those more experienced as well.

The artificial reef is part of the HMAS Brisbane Conservation Park, managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, and is teeming with sea life like clown fish, colourful wrasse, octopi, lionfish and turtles.

SUP: Pumicestone Passage

The body of water that separates Bribie Island from the mainland – Pumicestone Passage - is a hidden gem for Stand-Up Paddle Boarding. Stretching for 35kms from the southern end of the Caloundra bar to Deception Bay this marine park is a narrow, shallow estuary, encompassing a meandering system of channels, sand banks and islands.

Image

The best part or a nice paddle here? The beautiful Glasshouse Mountains are your backdrop in the distance as you explore the passage.

Deck yourself out with a Stand-Up Paddle Board from Bill’s Boat and Bike Hire or Golden Beach Hire and enjoy! If you want to go a bit faster - why not try a  jetski tour ?

Snorkel: Mudjimba Island

Also known as Old Woman Island, this spot just offshore is home to an abundance of marine life including dolphins, turtles, stingrays, crayfish, wobbegongs, eels, and starfish. The best snorkelling is on the western side of the island where there’s a massive ledge of vibrant coral, and where large schools of fish reside. We challenge to you to find Nemo!

The reef is only 3-5 metres below the surface – perfect for snorkelling - and you can find beautiful hard and soft corals.

If you can’t make your own way out there,  Sunreef run snorkelling trips out to the island that include all the gear hire.

SUP: Cotton Tree

Paddleboard at Cotton Tree

Paddleboard at Cotton Tree

Flanked by the sandy banks of the Maroochy River to the north and the beaches of the Pacific Ocean to the west, Cotton Tree is a protected oasis made for SUPing.

You can park at the Cotton Tree swimming pool and just in front of the caravan park you will find paddle boarding heaven - the flat water and the stunning surrounds rank Cotton Tree as one of the best SUP locations on the Sunshine Coast.

For the more advanced SUP'er, you might be able to catch a few waves at the river mouth.

Dive: Jew Shoal

A short boat trip along the beautiful Noosa River and then a one-minute boat ride out into the Laguna Bay brings you to Jew Shoal. Here you will find hiding under the surface a large reef complex of ridges, canyons and bommies.

Image

As you meander through the caves, expect to see reef fish including angelfish, butterflyfish, surgeonfish, globefish, rabbitfish, soapfish, morwong, sweetlip and bream. There are plenty of ledges, walls, and crevices to explore.

Here is a good place to find as many nudibranchs as you can!

SUP: Lake Baroon

Tucked between Maleny and Montville in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Baroon Pocket Dam is hidden in a private valley and is a beautiful spot for a freshwater paddle.

SUP along surrounded by rainforests packed full of wildlife and uninterrupted by the sound and swell from jet skis and powerboats - Lake Baroon only permits electric powered boats and paddle craft. We can’t imagine a more serene spot for some peaceful time on the water.

Image

Snorkel: Mooloolaba

This one is a snorkel with a difference.  Sunreef  takes you up close and personal with humpback whales just 20 minutes off Mooloolaba from June to October.

Once the whales are spotted, you get to pop on your snorkel, jump off the boat and take a leap into the deep ocean water to meet with these beautiful giants face to face.

Every day is different on the water, and every encounter is unique. The experience is unparalleled and definitely one you will never forget.

SUP: Currimundi Lake

Currimundi Lake is doubly blessed with spectacular beaches and the natural lake connected to a long, unspoilt stretch of surf beach. At high tide, the lake here meets the ocean and no motorised watercraft are permitted on the lake, which makes the calm, flat waters of the area, perfect for SUP'ing.

Once up on your board you can follow the Currimundi Lake Trail on a safe, sheltered 6km paddle through urban and bushland areas fringed with paperbarks and she-oaks.

SUP: Noosa River

For the flat water SUP'er, Noosa River is your go-to spot, with pristine crystal-clear water, sandy beaches and wildlife.

Image

You can stay close to shore or take off for an adventure in either direction, either upriver or towards the ocean. Are you keen on a romantic sunset SUP? Then simply venture off to Gympie Terrace in Noosaville, pick any spot and paddle the Noosa River with the stunning sunset over Mt Cooroy.

Our Sunshine Coast trips are easily one of our most popular trips. Trip Details

Please refer to Dive Calendar for exact meeting time, but typically we meet at 7:30am, and catch a 9:30am ferry (varies depending on ferry schedule)

If you are renting gear, you will need to make sure we have your sizing ahead of time, as we pack the bags beforehand, and there is very little time in the morning. After gear bags are checked, we'll load up the vans and head to Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal (roughly 40 minute drive).

The ferry to Langdale, Sunshine Coast is about 45 minutes. Once unloaded off the ferry, we will head to our dive site (Tuwanek) which is usually about a 40 minute drive.

Upon arrival at the Dive Site, your dive guide will provide a thorough site and dive briefing, and organize buddy teams. When everyone is geared up, and buddy checks completed, we will walk down to the water, and enter from the beach. Once divers have their fins on, and weight checks completed, we will begin the dive! The dive will last roughly 45 mins depending on each divers air consumption and cold tolerance. We will take a short break for lunch and change our tanks over for the second dive.

The ferry home is usually a 4:30 or 5:25 ferry, which typically puts us back at the shop around 6:30 or 7pm.

Safari Ford Ranger PX MkI 4x4 Snorkel Features

  • Australian designed, moulded and manufactured
  • Raised air intake to prevent your engine from ingesting harmful elements
  • Increased airflow for Ford Ranger PX I engines
  • Water separating air ram design to remove water from the air stream
  • Durable and UV stable snorkel and air ram for added strength
  • Comprehensive Ford Ranger 4WD Snorkel fitting guide with an accurate template for installation.

The SS980HF, SS981HF & SS982HF Ford Ranger 4x4 Snorkel is designed to deliver a huge volume of the coolest and cleanest air possible into the stock air cleaner assembly of Ford Ranger PX I engines.

With the huge air flow demands of each engine in the Ford Ranger, Safari took the decision to design a snorkel system that raised the air intake to prevent ingesting harmful elements to the vehicles air cleaner.

Huge air flow is but one aspect of the ultimate in snorkel Ford Ranger design. The Safari snorkel air ram is designed to perform two very important roles. The most obvious is to funnel cool clean air into the snorkel body - but just as importantly, the Safari air ram acts as a highly efficient water separator to remove rain water from the incoming air stream - thus ensuring safe engine operation through even the most torrential tropical storms.

The genuine Safari Ford Ranger 4x4 Snorkel body and air ram is manufactured to the highest standards in durable, UV stable, cross linked polyethylene material. In addition, the substantial material wall thickness delivers huge physical strength to ensure that the Ford Ranger snorkel breezes through the toughest off-road conditions on the planet.

The SS982HP Ford Ranger 4x4 Snorkel is designed to deliver up to 50% more air than the OE air intake for Ford Ranger engines.

With the popularity of performance upgrades using engine management and larger exhausts, Safari 4x4 Engineering took the decision to design a snorkel system that not only raised the air intake to prevent ingesting harmful elements to the vehicles air cleaner, but also would be able to deliver the necessary volume of air into the engine, therefore maximising the performance enhancements potential.

Snorkeling on the Sunshine Coast

Snorkeling on the Sunshine Coast can be a very hit and miss activity. Let us tell you why…

Summer conditions (November – May) generally produce uncomfortable seas, ocean swells, and low visibility. Although the water is warm, snorkeling in these conditions can be challenging and is cancelled 50% of the time.

Winter conditions (June – October) generally produce calm seas, with clear water, however the water temperature is between 20 and 22 degrees.

snorkelling on the sunshine coast

The Sunshine Coast is very well known for it’s sand beaches, which means there is no coral or high populations of fish along the coastal beaches. The only shore snorkeling sunshine coast available is off rocky headlands: Kings Beach (Caloundra), Point Cartwright (Mooloolaba), Point Arkwright (Coolum), Noosa National Park (Noosa). All these locations are a no go when the swell or wind is up. Snorkeling on rocky headlands can be dangerous. If you are lucky, you may find a perfect day, and get some beautiful clear, warm water, with minimal waves. During the summer you would probably have a window of about 30/200 days. In the winter months you will have a window of 60/165 days, however remember the water will be cold, and you’ll definitely need a wetsuit.

There is an island called  Mudjimba Island  (Old Woman Island) that has beautiful snorkeling opportunities. The  reef  is only 3-5 meters below the surface, and you can find beautiful hard and soft corals, lots of tropical fish, turtles and crustaceans   to name a few.

We offer  snorkeling trips to Mudjimba Island  during school holiday periods and other times  on demand  – It is a 25 minute boat ride from our  dive shop  at Mooloolaba. All other reef sites on the Sunshine Coast are too deep (8 – 30 metres) for beginner snorkeling.

2024 Dates:

We run snorkelling trips during the Queensland school holidays only.

5th April 1:45 – 4pm

16th Sept 2pm – 430pm

20th Sept 2pm – 430pm

Zanzibar & Mafia: Going Under

10 nights from $3120.

(per person, excluding international flights)

BEST MONTHS TO TRAVEL

Suitable for.

  • Zanzibar & Mafia: Going Under

A super holiday for witnessing the best of East Africa’s underwater wildlife.  Enjoy the beach life, relaxed island culture and diving on Zanzibar, then fly to the less travelled shores of Mafia for pristine reefs and the chance to snorkel with Whale Sharks.

Itinerary Highlights

Avoid the crowds and optimise your safari by choosing smaller camps away from mass tourism with top guiding and abundant wildlife.

There’s nowhere quite like it for the stunning white-white fine sand and turqoise warm sea. Have fun swimming or just chilling on the beach and watching the dhows sail by.

Immerse yourself in beautiful waters either beach side or off a boat. There are plenty of places to hire, dip and dive nearby.

Snorkel with the largest fish in the seas off Mafia Island from October to February as they come in to feed on the plankton blown in from mainland Tanzania.

There’s always something to do on the beach but if you need something a little more active try the plethora of motorised and non motorised watersports at hand.

Take a closer look at your African adventure, day-by-day

Sunshine marine lodge, zanzibar.

  • On arrival into Zanzibar, you will be met and transferred to your lodge.

I am just back from Tanzania and wanted to thank you very much for a fantastic itinerary. I loved all the accommodation choices made, all the connecting flights worked well and the guide was superb. I had a great time and let me know if you want to get some more feedback on any of the properties suggested by you and also Pongwe Beach which excellent.

Many thanks for a truly great holiday! Nyerere National Park was a great success as we saw the wild dogs on 2 occasions and some great lion kills. In fact we saw a pride of 10 lion including cubs within 10 mins of landing in the Nyerere National Park! Zanzibar was wonderful! The sunshine hotel was beautiful and the staff were lovely.

The welcome and kindness and generosity we have received, in all of our camps and stops has been tremendous. Although we have both travelled a lot over our years together, we both agree this holiday has been outstanding, and one of the best experiences of our lives.
