The 4 Apps You Need For Bus and Train Trips in the US

Making long-distance bus and train trips easier and cheaper

travel app by bus

Long-distance public transport isn't always a great option in the US. Without the high-speed trains of Europe and Asia, covering such large distances can be time-consuming, and finding the right combination of routes is often laborious.

For shorter trips or those on a tight budget, however, these often-overlooked modes of transport offer a good alternative to flights or driving your own vehicle.

Download these four apps to make the process faster, easier and maybe even cheaper.

To get a good idea of the options you've got available, it's hard to go past Rome2Rio. The app asks for a start and end point, and shows any combination of flights, buses, trains, ferries and self-driving options you can take for the journey.

You'll get price information for each potential trip, along with its duration. Tap one that seems appealing, and you'll see the available schedule, map and a detailed breakdown of each step of the journey.

The app isn't perfect – prices and schedules change faster than they can be updated, and booking or schedule links don't always take you where they should. Still, to quickly discover which choices you've got and roughly how much they'll cost, it's always a useful place to start.

iOS  and Android

Dedicated solely to bus and train travel in North America, Wanderu is an essential part of the ground traveler's arsenal. The app covers over 2000 cities, with comprehensive information about carriers, routes and schedules in much of the United States and Canada, as well as key Mexican destinations..

Enter your start and end points, travel date and time and number of people, and the app quickly spits out a range of options.

On popular routes like New York City to Washington, DC, there are literally hundreds of choices. The app helpfully shows the cheapest, earliest, latest and shortest trips along the top of the screen, and tapping on any of them sorts the list that way. Longer and more obscure routes, unsurprisingly, have fewer options.

Selecting any trip shows detailed trip information, including start and end times and station address. Tapping the location icon loads that address into your favorite mapping app. Booking, too, is reasonably straightforward and done inside the app rather than pushing you out to the carrier's website – a nice touch.

Wandru is available on iOS and Android .

Given the lack of competition on the nation's rails, the Amtrak app is better than you might expect. You can book one-way, round-trip or multi-ride tickets directly, as well as update existing reservations.

Station information is available, along with trip details and information about any delays, and you can board using the barcode shown within the app. You can also check the current status of any train, if you're getting worried it's not going to show up on time.

The app is available on iOS , Android and Windows Phone .

With the biggest intercity bus network in the country, Greyhound can get you almost anywhere you want to go. The company's app has most of the features of the website, including booking tickets, checking schedules, and finding station locations and information.

Real-time bus status and location are also available. All bookings are stored in the 'My Trips' section, making it easy to see which trips you've got coming up. Discounts are shown in-app, and you can access your "RoadRewards" points if you're a member.

Note that it only works for Greyhound-branded services. If you want to use Bolt Bus, for example, it has its own app. Trips also need to originate within the continental United States to be bookable within the app.

The app is available on iOS and Android .

1. MyTSA (Free: Android; iOS)

best travel apps MyTSA

Before you hit the road, make sure you've got MyTSA on your smartphone. The official app of the Transportation Security Administration isn't going to win any beauty contests, but it will let you check wait times at security checkpoints at major airpots. And that can help you plan on how much travel time you need to allow.

The app includes historical wait-time data while also giving you the option of checking crowd-sourced reports of how long security lines are at that moment. The ability to search what you can bring on a plane, get live assistance and find out info on the TSA PreCheck program make this a good app for travelers to keep handy on their smartphone.

Download MyTSA: Android , iOS

2. Expedia (Android, iOS: Free)

best travel apps Expedia

If you're a frequent traveller, you need a good all-in-one travel app, and Expedia is a tried-and-true option. 3. Flighty (iOS: Free)

best travel apps Flighty

There are flight trackers, and then there's Flighty, an iOS app for people who really want to know the location and arrival time of their plane. The free version of the app gives you basic flight-tracking tools, but pay up for a subscription ($8.99 a month or $49.99 per year), and you get access to more sophisticated features such as push notifications, syncing with TripIt or with calendars, and an assistant to help with your flight connections.

Flighty also claims to be able to predict flight delays by monitoring inbound planes for 25 hours and monitoring FAA-mandated delays. You can check out the portions of the paid app for free during a 14-day trial.

Download Flighty: iOS

4. Hopper (Android, iOS: Free)

hopper iphone apps ios

Another app bringing big data and predictive algorithms to the world of air travel is Hopper It uses a massive database of airline prices and historical trends to predict when prices to a destination are likely to be lowest, when they're likely to change, and the best time to buy a ticket for a particular date and destination.

You can watch flights on specific dates or destinations, and the app will advise you whether it's worth it to buy now or to wait, tell you the dates when it's likely cheapest to fly, estimate changes in price, and notify you of price drops or rises. You can also save your payment details within the app for quick booking.

Download Hopper: Android , iOS

5. iExit (Android, iOS: Free)

best trvel apps: iExit

If your travel plans involve a lot of driving, iExit works as a handy freeway exit guide, listing nearby highway exits, as well as the kind of businesses and amenities there are nearby. Download iExit: Android , iOS

6. Waze (Android; iOS)

best travel apps: Waze

Nothing gets a vacation off on the wrong foot like getting stuck in traffic. Waze can't eliminate the traffic, but it can help you get around any jams, especially if you're in an unfamiliar city.

The navigation app feeds your smartphone real-time traffic information, based on reports from other Waze users. That data includes accidents, speed traps and other hazards that might keep you from getting to your destination in a timely fashion.

Other features sure to impress travelers include automatic rerouting, cheap gas alerts and the ability to send your ETA to anyone waiting at your final stop.

Download Waze: Android , iOS

7. Skiplagged (Android, iOS: Free)

best travel apps: Skiplagged

If you're traveling light and looking to save a few bucks, check out Skiplagged. It's a neat app that can keep your travel costs down by taking advantage of "hidden city flights", where flyers get off at a layover, instead of at the final destination.

Enter your origin and destination, and Skiplagged will show you the cost of a direct flight, as well as any cheaper "hidden city" flights that have your intended destination as a layover. The caveat? Stick to carry-on luggage, as any checked-in bags will go all the way to the flight's final destination.

Skiplagged also allows you to book hotels, including last-minute deals and special offers.

Download Skiplagged: Android , iOS

AtYourGate users can order food or other items, pay through the app, and even arrange for the item to be delivered to them right at their gate, lounge, or other location. The app will save you a good amount of time in line, but it’s no reason to leave your physical passport at home. Mobile Passport is a companion app, not a replacement.

Using that data, TripIt builds an organized itinerary of your flight boarding times, hotel check-ins and more. While TripIt is a free download, a $48.99 annual subscription gets you features like real-time flight alerts and updates on how long airport lines are.

You can view a summary of your airline's baggage rules (or even have an augmented reality overlay that you can use to measure your baggage to see if it will fit for carry-on or overhead guidelines).

Travelers can integrate the app with TripIt, track loyalty rewards, view airplane amenities and even forward their details to their Apple Watch or Android Wear device. A premium subscription ($29.99 per year) includes real-time flight status updates, automated check-ins, and more.

Tourists using navigation app on the mobile phone.

Top 10 transport apps for smarter travel

Whether you’re planning journeys, buying tickets or claiming compensation, there are apps to help. Guardian Technology’s Stuart Dredge has the lowdown

Citymapper Android / iOS – Free

Citymapper icon.

People who use Citymapper will happily rave about its qualities, and they are justified. It’s the best app for navigating urban public transport, whether you’re using the train, tube, bus, Uber cabs or even getting on your bike. You tell the app where you want to go, and it suggests a route and transport method(s), factoring in real-time data on disruptions en route. In the UK, it works in London, Birmingham and Manchester, as well as other major cities around the world. Also try: Moovit, another slick urban navigation app.

Live Train Times UK iOS – £1.49

Live train times uk icon.

If you spend a lot of time getting trains, being able to quickly pull up live times in an app before haring off to the station is very useful. Live Train Times UK works beautifully on that score, especially if you let it know what your regular routes are. Meanwhile, its information on platform numbers and even how many carriages there are – which might swing your decision about which one to catch – are extremely handy too. Also try: National Rail Enquiries with its times and journey planning.

UK Bus Checker Android / iOS – Free + IAP

Uk bus checker icon.

From the developer that launched London Bus Checker comes this app covering the whole of the UK – all 300,000 bus stops worth, in fact. You can check the timetable or get live departures from your nearest stop, or use its journey-planning feature to prepare for upcoming trips. And for anyone prone to dozing while rattling along, the Stop Alert feature will wake you up in good time for your stop. Also try: London Bus Live Countdown, a capital-focused checker app.

Trainline UK Android / iOS – Free

Trainline-uk-icon

More than 9.4 million people have downloaded this app, making it one of the most popular British transport apps. It matches its parent website in its ability to help you research upcoming train journeys and buy tickets – even up to 10 minutes before departure. It’s also useful for checking live times and platform data. Also try: Trainline Europe, for tickets across the continent.

TrainTrick Android / iOS – Free

traintrick-icon.

As Southern Rail passengers have been venting regularly in recent months, train delays can be a frustrating waste of time. At least TrainTrick takes the hassle out of claiming compensation for those delays. You upload a photo of your ticket and the reason for the delay, and TrainTrick takes care of filing the complaint – taking a small cut of your compensation. Also try: The aptly-named Trains From Hell, for similar features.

Uber Android / iOS – Free

Uber icon.

One of the most controversial transport apps in 2016, especially for established taxi drivers. But Uber is still proving very popular for its ability to digitally hail cars to take you from A to B, getting an estimated fare before you set off. Uber now runs in 16 British cities, with more added regularly. Also try: Hailo and Gett, which bring the Uber approach to traditional taxis.

Gopili – Cheap Tickets Android / iOS – Free

Gopili-icon.

The name of this app makes its pitch to travellers clear: it doesn’t just want to book you tickets, it wants to get you the cheapest price. What’s handy here is that Gopili isn’t just for one mode of transport: it compares trains, coaches and flights across Europe, then sorts its results by price, duration or departure time for ease of choosing. Also try: Busbud for cheap coach tickets, and Skyscanner for flights.

Changers – CO2 Fit Android / iOS – Free

changers-co2-fit-icon.

Changers has a different angle to the other apps in this roundup: it wants to get you travelling in a more environmentally-friendly way. That means measuring the distance you travel by public transport, bike or walking and calculating the amount of CO2 you’ve saved in the process, with a points system to keep you motivated. Also try: Journeys: A Greener Way from A to B, created by the Scottish government.

Tube Map London Underground Android / iOS – Free + IAP

Tube Map London Underground Icon.

The iconic London tube map lends itself to an app treatment, but this is about more than just telling your Bakerloo and Jubilee lines apart. You’ll also get live arrival and departure times, route planning across the capital, and handy walking directions to get between tube stations when strolling is quicker than tubing. Also try: Tube Exits, to pinpoint which carriage to stand in for a quick exit at your destination.

Santander Cycles Android / iOS – Free

Santander Cycles logo.

Finally, another app for London travellers – commuters and tourists alike – who want to take advantage of the vehicles popularly known as Boris bikes. You can quickly see where bikes are free to hire; get a code to unlock one before you get there; and then plan your cycling journey across London. Also try: CycleMaps, to plan your biking journeys wherever you are in the UK (or, indeed, the world).

Not a UK focussed app per se but Airbnb is a nice way to find great value accommodation and also very quirky local experiences across the UK. I’ve use them a few times  recently  and had a great experience every time. If you are new to Airbnb , signup using  this link  to get £25 off your first booking.

Why do you need it?

With over 600,000 listings across 30,000 cities, AirBnB not only offers a great alternative to hotels but also caters to a potentially unique experience at your favorite destinations.

Stand-out feature:

Thanks to the map search, even if you have a vague idea about the area, you could easily search the neighborhood of your choice and check out the rooms that fit your budget.

3.  Kabbee

screen568x568-3

Visiting London? Need an economic cab? Avoid the expensive Black Cabs and book a minicab. The only problem is that these cabs cannot be hailed from the street. Enter  Kabbee  , a cracking app that gives you an instant quote from 60 competing minicab firms in London, along with user reviews and ratings. You can then pick your choice ( save as a favourite for later) and choose to pay by cash, credit card or via their prepaid account facility.

Why you need it?

It offers surprisingly cheap rides no matter if you need an airport transfer or you’re just travelling around the town. It selects the right cab for you from over 70 London fleets.

Stand out feature:

For airport rides, Kabbee is nearly 25% cheaper than Uber and 35% economical than Addison Lee.

4. Around Me

7. Tripadvisor Offline City Guides

unnamed

For comprehensive information and practical guides, Tripadvisor’s  city apps  are hard to beat. Each free app contains a wealth of information, including detailed, interactive maps, which you can select to show different things, such as restaurants or tourist attractions. There are also self-guided city tours, which provide practical and cultural information, meaning you can see the sights without forking out for a guided tour. You can search for places or activities within a particular budget, and best of all, you can use the app offline, avoiding hefty roaming charges.

With millions of traveller reviews, photos, and maps, this app helps you know better and get better of the airfare, hotels, restaurants, and fun activities wherever you go. What’s more? Hotels, flights and restaurant bookings are just a tap away.

travel app by bus

Imagine a ride-sharing app that provides you with the luxury of fast and reliable cabs in the major cities of UK. One of the easiest ways to hail a licensed cab in London, Uber gives you the flexibility to pay with both credit as well as cash, with receipts mailed to your inbox.

With Uber on your phone, there’s no need to park or wait for a taxi or a bus anymore. Just request a ride and your driver will be at your doorsteps in just a few minutes. What’s more? You could track the progress of your cab on a live map.

Because cabs are expensive, walking all day long is tiring and figuring out an unfamiliar public transport network could be really difficult.

You can track your ride on the map, watching your driver roll towards you. Moreover, the in-app fare-splitting makes it a value for money.

All you have to do is download, register and then the app based on your location, will give you a bunch of local offers. Often neglected, the much improved Foursquare app which started out as a check-in game where users compete against friends to earn points for their check-ins has now turned into a far more useful, practical moneysaving app. Using the ‘explore nearby’ function and then checking ‘best nearby’ tab, you can find the best restaurants, shops within your current location based on your GPS location.

The ‘Specials’ tab allows you to find discounts and freebies within your vicinity.

20.  Expensify + Trail Wallet ( £1.99 )

It’s all too easy to overspend while travelling: estimating exchange rates as you shop, eating out several nights in a row, picking up the tab for friends. There are a range of apps to deal with exactly this problem and which allow you to record your expenses.

I’ve used the Expensify app previously and this handy, especially for business travellers, or for someone that likes to keep close tabs on what they are spending while they travel. With Expensify you can scan receipts, add hours you have worked, add expenses manually, add mileage and create invoices and expense reports. Drawback- If you have a lot of expenses to record, it can be time consuming to use this app and it takes a few seconds to record each item.

trail-wallet-preview

One of the best apps for tracking your daily expenditure and sticking to your budget while travelling is Trail Wallet . (Pictured above)

It’s simple and has an intuitive user-friendly interface. The app allows you to set a daily budget and then tracks your spending toward that. Trail Wallet has all has all the practicalities covered: supplies the current exchange rate ( 218 local currencies listed. Dependent on internet connection) , organises your spending by category, expenses tracking plus you can export your expenses via .csv file. The app also creates colorful pie charts to help visualise your spending.

Trail Wallet is one of the best expense tracking apps for the budget, rather than the business traveller. It is the only app here which isn’t free, but at £1.99, it’s well worth it.

To manage your travel budget effectively.

It features report management, receipt tracking in addition to mileage and time tracking. Moreover, you can snap a photo through SmartScan and it would be redirected to Expensify itself.

21. The National Trust

4424996202_ca8f7a54b1_o

Last but not least, I definitely recommend downloading the  National Trust App . It allows you to discover the beauty of Britain’s countryside from the comfort of your phone highlighting 585 of the must-see places in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, fom coastlines to countryside and everything in-between. You can search by postcode or location and browse the interactive “favourites” list with hi-res images.

Why do we need it?

Your guide to the amazing day outs at historic houses and buildings protected by the National Trust throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Regular alerts about the range of events hosted by the National trust throughout the year.

I would also add a decent navigational app Spyglass. It works great when offline, assuming that you pre-download the maps that you need in advance. It shows your accurate coordinates and your current position on a map, allows to mark locations and waypoints, share your locations with friends and much more. https://itunes.apple.com/app/spyglass/id332639548?mt=8&at=11lLc7&ct=c

Nice presentation, looks great! You should also check out the app Digitourist. You can find all tourist activities and spots in the UK on it and it’s for free. I use it a lot when traveling, i love it, it’s so easy!

I Was interested in JourneyPro until I read the poor reviews? Seems it has fallen from grace & is now outdated…… back to searching ?

Why is Digitourist not in this list? They have all tourist activities in Europe in one simple to use concept and you can save them for later use, also you can plan and save your routes in case you go by car.

Loved the post. There really are so many apps you did a great job. Just curious why there was National Trust but not English Heritage Days Out here? They both do the same thing but with different sites. I have both and use them depending on which area of the country I’m in. I don’t use AirBnB because I’ve planned prior to my trips and just don’t normally need it.

Another app I use is the Heathrow Airport Guide. Of course, GateGuru and other apps help with that as well. Some other apps I use are currency converter, tip calculator, and TripIt.

You opened my eyes to some new apps. Thank you very much!

Makes travel much easier

After trying a couple other apps, this became the only one I used during a week long trip to NYC. I didn’t find the filter options to do things like, minimize walking, for a few days and there were a couple times I had to change details to get it to display a previous option again. — I understand why, as a new path might be faster now than before, but an option to choose certain trains would be nice. However, everything else was great. I loved that it gave options, showed the wall distances, would let you specify a future time, etc. it made traveling around the city much easier. Big thanks to the creators of this app. — And as a plus, the “free” version displays very few apps, which was a pleasant surprise

Would use again :))

I visited NYC for about three days with my family, and this app definitely saved our lives. Coming from California, we never take the train or bus to go places, so taking the subway would be a huge issue. But this app made traveling so much easier. We knew exactly which train to get on, what stops were being taken, and when we had to get off to either our destination or to transfer to another train. Of course, I can’t give it five stars because sometimes the times are inaccurate, but the times are usually off by a couple minutes. To get an accurate time, the signs in the subway do give better times of when a train is arriving (i.e. 1 minute, 5 minutes, etc.). Also, the service does cut off when the train is in motion, so the app doesn’t work and doesn’t show us our exact location, but once the train stops for the next flow of people, you are able to see exactly which station and street you’re on if the train itself doesn’t provide a sign or you cannot hear the conductor. If I ever go back to NYC, I will definitely be using this app again :)

App’s GPS tracker is extremely inaccurate!!!!

Every day for the past month I have been racing to get to the express bus stop because the app gps stated that the bus would arrive in a certain amount of minutes. I keep watching hung the gps in this app count down the arrival of the bus until it reaches ‘0’ minutes which means the bus is within feet of the stop….except no bus arrives. And I am now left waiting for an additional bus to arrive for another hour. Is it so hard to say that the bus for that time is not running today. Why does the app need to provide such blatant lies. Just say it’s not running. And when asking the drivers about their tracking—they say “oh don’t pay attention to that—the gps on this bus never works”. Why use the app for real time. I may as well stick to the generic time table and hope for the best. As I type this, it is 9:30 pm. I just got off of my shift as an RN and raced to catch a bus that was supposed to arrive 10 minutes ago. The app os now saying another bus will arrive in 50 minutes. So instead I have to wait alone at night as a woman for the next bus that May or may not come. This is not a one time occurrence. It’s now daily.

Arrest report IDs 6 victims in Florida bus crash, details pickup truck driver’s condition

Live radar: severe thunderstorm watch issued for central florida until 5 p.m. here’s how things are shaping up, a warning, 3 watches and an advisory in effect for 9 regions in the area, no wallet, no problem: you can have your id on your phone. here’s how, floridians can get digital driver’s license through app..

Erika Briguglio , Producer

Lisa Bell , Anchor

It seems like you can get everything on your phone these days: your credit card, boarding pass, and now, in Florida, your driver’s license.

The state launched its Florida Smart ID app back in 2022, and News 6 wanted to find out whether people are using it.

Jennifer Cashen of Apopka swears by it.

“It has your registration for your vehicles. It also has your insurance included there,” she said.

[EXCLUSIVE: Become a News 6 Insider (it’s FREE) | PINIT! Share your photos ]

Cashen said she found out about the application while at the DMV, and she calls it a lifesaver after her loved one was involved in a crash.

“It had triggered the entire airbag deployment, so we couldn’t get the glove compartment completely unlocked. We could get it open, but like not get a hand in there, not getting anything, and so I was able to prove that we own the vehicle, that it had insurance,” Cashen told News 6.

Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles told News 6 that more than 521,000 people have used the app since May 5. According to state data, there are more than 18 million licensed drivers in the Sunshine State. The agency said it spent $1,953,000 for application development.

So why aren’t more people using it?

[VOTE IN POLL | STORY CONTINUES BELOW]

Well for one: in Florida, you still have to carry your physical license if you are driving. Another reason, Cashen said, is many people do not know about the digital driver’s license and stores might not accept it.

“I’ve checked into hotels with it. I have used it at different venues. I’ve only had it rejected at two venues so far,” said Cashen. “I’ve definitely had it be accused of being a fake. I was like, ‘No, no, no. This is from the DMV. This is a real thing.’”

News 6 asked Publix and Winn Dixie if they accept Florida Smart ID. We received these responses:

"We do not use Florida Smart ID at our locations. " Hannah Herring, Media Relations Manager for Publix Super Markets, Inc.
"Winn-Dixie does not accept the Florida Smart ID at this time. We are always listening to our customers and consistently looking for ways to innovate our shopping experience. " SEG Media

As for flying, TSA told News 6 it does accept digital driver’s licenses, but not yet for Florida Smart ID and not at Orlando International Airport.

“I think people would be way happier if they had this option to them. I really do think if the state of Florida would build it in with your renewals, I would think you would see an uptick in usage, too,” Cashen said.

News 6 asked Florida Highway Safety Motor Vehicles if it is happy with the number of people who enrolled in Florida Smart ID and if there are plans to raise awareness about the technology. The agency did not respond to our questions.

Florida Smart ID can be downloaded through the Apple and Android app stores. If you want more information on how it works, and the security features, Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has a list of frequently asked questions on its website.

Two-thirds of London's 'floating' bus stops found to have design issues, as four people struck by cyclists

Two-thirds of all ‘floating’ bus stops on London’s cycle network feature design issues, a new TfL report has found.

The review, published on Wednesday, was commissioned by Sadiq Khan following repeated safety concerns raised by the public, particularly blind and elderly people.

The report has found four pedestrians were injured at the controversial stops between 2020 and 2022.

It also found 56 of the 164 stops - 34 per cent - have “significant” design issues, such as no zebra crossings, incorrect tactile paving, a missing shelter, or a bus island that is too narrow. A further 32 per cent have “minor” design issues.

The ‘floating’ stops - known officially as bus stop bypasses - feature a cycle lane that runs between the bus stop and the pavement.

Of the 164 in London, 87 are on TfL’s road network, and 77 are on borough roads.

They are primarily aimed at preventing cyclists being put in danger by getting stuck behind stationary buses and having to pull out into moving traffic.

But there are widespread concerns the design creates a major hazard to pedestrians, who must cross the cycle paths to get to and from buses.

TfL’s report has found that between 2020 and 2022, four people were hit by cyclists while doing this.

Two of the incidents were described as “serious”.

One saw a cyclist on an electric bike in Marble Arch crash into a person crossing the cycle lane, leaving them with a head injury.

In the second, on the A11 at Bow Church, a person boarding a bus stepped into the cycle lane and collided with a cyclist, falling and sustaining a head injury.

TfL said neither of these bus stops complied with its guidance for bus stop bypasses, while none of the stops where crashes happened appeared to have zebra crossings.

TfL also observed video at eight bus stop bypass sites, and found “a significant proportion of cyclists” did not give way to pedestrians at the zebra crossings as they should.

But it argued crashes at bus stop bypasses represent “0.6 per cent of a total of 623 pedestrian casualties involving collisions with cyclists during the three-year period, and 0.03 per cent of all 12,069 pedestrian road casualties during this time”.

“Every casualty on London’s streets is unacceptable and needs to be prevented,” it said.

“However, the chance of being injured by someone cycling at a bus stop bypass is very low compared to the chance of being injured by a driver on the wider network.

“There were more than 11,400 pedestrian casualties resulting from collisions with motor vehicles and more than 15,000 cycle casualties resulting from collisions with vehicles in the same period.”

TfL acknowledged the concerns raised by disabled people, particularly blind and visually impaired people.

Following its report, TfL says it plans to boost safety by working with boroughs to update non-compliant bus stop bypasses, some of which were built before TfL published design guidance in 2018.

It is also planning a “high-visibility education campaign” in partnership with the Met, to ensure cyclists know how to behave at bus stop bypasses.

It is also planning to explore “innovative” trials such as new crossing technology for visually impaired people.

On Wednesday, the National Federation of the Blind UK (NFBUK) handed a petition, signed by 275 charities and organisations representing disabled and vulnerable people, to the Department for Transport calling for the stops to be scrapped.

“We are asking you to urgently introduce a moratorium on all floating bus stops and shared use bus boarder stops, which are causing discrimination against blind, visually impaired disabled and older people who now cannot board the bus in safety or independently,” said the petition.

It marked the fifth time NFBUK has petitioned the Government on the matter, and came after footage filmed by the charity showed a pedestrian trying to access a ‘floating’ bus stop being struck by a cyclist.

The “elderly” person was struck by the cyclist as they tried to reach the stop by St Thomas’ Hospital, near Westminster Bridge. The incident came this month, outside the time frame surveyed in TfL’s survey.

The footage also showed a number of other cyclists nearly missing pedestrians at the stop.

Christina Calderato, TfL's Director of Transport Strategy and Policy, said: “Keeping everyone travelling in the capital safe is our top priority and we’re determined to make the network as inclusive as possible, which is why we have carried out an extensive review of safety at bus stop bypasses,” she said.

“There is clear evidence from the report that the likelihood of a pedestrian being injured by a cyclist at a bypass is very low. Our analysis also suggests that bus stop bypasses have not led to a reduction in bus stop use by older or disabled customers.

“Any moratorium on bus stop bypasses would put at risk the programme of work we are undertaking to improve cycle safety in London and encourage more people to cycle.

“We will continue to work with disabled people and accessibility groups to reflect on the findings of our review, including looking at design improvements and upgrades where necessary, and will continue to work with stakeholders to ensure that our transport network works for everyone.”A DfT spokesperson said: “While TfL are responsible for these schemes in London, we expect local authorities to engage with disability groups and follow our guidance which clearly sets out that all infrastructure designs should be accessible for everyone.”

Daily Briefing: $1 billion in weapons for Israel

travel app by bus

A $1 billion military package for Israel, including tank rounds, mortars and armored tactical vehicles, has been transferred from the State Department into the congressional review process. Nebraska's primary kept a far-right candidate out of Congress and Caitlin Clark scored a game-high-tying 20 points in her WNBA debut.

Biden asks Congress to OK $1 billion in weapons for Israel

The Biden administration has informed Congress that it intends to transfer $1 billion in weapons to Israel, a week after President Biden said he was pausing the shipment of bombs to Israel. Biden said last week he was delaying delivery of hundreds of bombs over disagreements about Israel's military plans in Rafah. Meanwhile, the vital Rafah crossing and the Kerem Shalom crossing remain closed, limiting the ability of aid organizations to bring in supplies that have piled up on the Egyptian side of the border. Egypt and Israel dispute who is to blame.

Don Bacon fends off GOP hardliner in Nebraska primary

Rep. Don Bacon won Nebraska's 2nd congressional District House primary Tuesday night, beating his far-right challenger, businessman Dan Frei, who said he would join the House Freedom Caucus if elected.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

Why it matters: Bacon represents Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District, which earned the nickname "blue dot" after President Joe Biden won it by over six points in 2020 after years of Republican wins.

  • In one of the country's unpredictable voter bases, both Bacon and Democratic state Sen. Tony Vargas will have to appeal to moderate voters to secure a win.
  • He wasn't backed by Trump , but Nebraska U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts won the Republican nomination in the state's special primary election.
  • Biden clinched a victory in Nebraska's Democratic primary. However, the president isn't expected to pick up the state in November's general election.

Feds point to Boeing failures

Boeing has violated a 2021 agreement that shielded it from criminal prosecution after two 737 Max disasters left 346 people dead overseas, the Department of Justice told a federal judge in a court filing Tuesday. The government has not yet decided if it will pursue prosecution of Boeing, but lawyers representing families of the victims who died in the crash said they hope to see further action in the case. How did Caitlin Clark do in her WNBA debut?

It was Caitlin Clark’s WNBA debut, but really, the night belonged to Alyssa Thomas. The 11th-year veteran for Connecticut reminded everyone why she was in MVP contention last season as she recorded her 12th career triple-double, scoring 13, grabbing 10 rebounds and handing out 13 assists, as the Connecticut Sun cruised to a 92-71 win over the Indiana Fever.
