Canada's Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant secured a playoff spot at the world mixed doubles curling championship with Wednesday's 6-2 win over England.

Winnipeg's Peterman and Gallant of St. John's, N.L., have two more round-robin games to play Thursday at the Sous-Moulin Sports Centre, but the Canadians were guaranteed one of six playoff berths with the victory over siblings Anna and Ben Fowler.

Canada (6-1) can finish no worse than third in Pool B. It plays its final preliminary-round games Thursday against Australia (3-4) and the United States (4-3).

"If we continue to play the way we're playing and we continue to get comfortable with the ice, we'll be in a good position," Gallant said.

"We're positioning our draws better than we were at the start of the week, and that's been the key to our game. Getting those angles set up, and we're starting to make a few more shots a game, and that's really been helping."

Canada clinches playoff spot at world mixed doubles curling championship

The top three teams in each pool of 10 make the playoffs. Scotland's Eve Muirhead and Bobbie Lammie (7-0) were also playoff-bound out of Pool B.

The top-ranked duos earn byes to Friday's semifinals with the remaining four playing off earlier that day. The medal games are Saturday.

A Canadian team has never won a world mixed doubles title in the event's 13-year history.

Peterman and Gallant, who are engaged to be married in June, won a silver medal in 2019 in Stavanger, Norway.

"We like playing together, and we enjoy it," Peterman said. "It's fun on the ice, and we're not really thinking about the pressure ever. We just like playing and making great shots, and this discipline is fun for us to highlight that."

The pair was hand-picked by Curling Canada to wear the Maple Leaf in Geneva because the COVID-19 pandemic scrubbed the national championship.

Steals galore for Canada

Canada stole a point in the first end, held England to one in the second and was held to one in the third Wednesday. The Canadians then stole single points in the fourth, fifth and sixth ends.

Peterman's tick shot to move a corner guard in the fifth eliminated any chance for England to set up for a multi-point end.

  • Canadian curlers 2nd in Group B at mixed doubles worlds after lopsided wins

Gallant locked a draw frozen onto the button in the sixth end for another steal. After mustering a single pint in the seventh, England conceded.

Gallant played second for Brad Gushue's team that earned world men's championship silver earlier this month in Las Vegas and Olympic bronze in Beijing in February. He will join Brendan Bottcher's team next season.

Peterman played second for Jennifer Jones at the Olympic Games. She'll join a team skipped by longtime Jones third Kaitlyn Lawes next season.

Canadians advance at world senior championships

Canada's Wade White and Sherry Anderson also qualified for playoffs in the world senior curling championships, held in conjunction with the mixed doubles in Geneva.

Anderson is chasing a record third straight world senior women's title. Her Saskatoon team improved to 4-1 with a 10-1 win over the Czech Republic.

White's foursome from Lac La Biche, Alta., remained undefeated at 5-0 following a 9-3 decision against Italy.

White faces the United States and Anderson takes on Italy to close out the preliminary round Thursday.

The playoffs are Friday followed by Saturday's medal games.

World Mixed Doubles Curling Championships 2022: Unbeaten Scotland and Canada secure play-off spots

Qualified Scotland continue to wow in Geneva as they extend their win-streak to seven games while a four-way tie for first leaves everything to play for ahead of final round-robin match in Group A.

Eve Muirhead

Eve Muirhead and Bobby Lammie stay undefeated in seven games to book their place in the play-offs at the 2022 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championships on Wednesday (April 27).

The Scottish pair have been a tour de force on the ice in Geneva, securing their place in the play-offs undefeated with two round-robin matches left to play.

Joining them in the next phase of competition will be Canada who progress through after beating England 6-2 to take their overall win-loss record to 6-1.

With two teams now through from Group B only one play-off spot remains meaning the race to make it has intensified.

Currently tied for third are US and Germany on 4-3, while Australia, Czech Republic and Hungary sit behind in joint-fifth on 3-4.

Becca and Matt Hamilton of Team USA had, early doors, looked the most likely pair to join Canada and Scotland but after picking up their third consecutive defeat at the hands of Australia they find themselves in the chasing fray.

The Americans fell 12-5 to Tahlia Gill and Dean Hewitt who are now unbeaten in three games.

A two-point steal in the third by Australia followed up by two four-point ends in the fifth and seventh made catching the Aussies a near-impossible task for the Hamilton siblings who ended up conceding the match.

“Every win from now on is going to be crucial,” Gill said to World Curling after the match with the play-offs on her mind. “We have to win the rest of our games to maybe have a chance [of qualifying]. We’re just going to out there and try to keep the momentum going.”

One round robin session left to determine play-off contenders in Group A

The make-up of the standings in Group A mean that the door remains wide open for several teams hoping to advance to the next round of competition.

Following the results of the evening’s matches Japan, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland all find themselves in a tie for the first with six wins and two losses each.

Japan arrived there after beating Finland 11-3; Sweden conquered Denmark 8-3; Norway overcame play-off rivals Italy 9-3 and Switzerland topped the day with an 11-3 victory over New Zealand.

Hot in all of their heels is Italy who, despite suffering their third consecutive defeat, remain in contention with five wins and three losses in total.

They began the day with an 11-7 defeat at the hands of Switzerland thanks in part to a stunning six-point first end executed by Alina Paetz .

Though mixed doubles Olympic champion Stefania Constantini replied with a respectable three points in the second end to take the score to 6-3 the Swiss pair then produced their own three-point end to go ahead 9-3.

Undeterred the Italians continued to try and reverse their fortunes but when they entered the eighth end Paetz and partner Sven Michel still had a 10-7 lead which they then added to with a point of one to end the game 11-7.

Italy's woes then continued when Norway put on a stunning performance to end the game in six ends.

An opening score of one was then backed up with two one-point steals handing the Norwegians a 3-0 lead at the conclusion of the third end.

The Italians replied with their own score of one in the fourth but were then blown out of the water when Maia Ramsfjell delivered a perfect draw to score a maximum six points leaving Italy trailing 9-1.

Constantini and partner Sebastiano Arman replied by recovering two in the sixth end before then opting to concede the game at 9-3.

If Constantini has any intentions of marrying her Olympic gold with a world title she must help Italy win its final game this afternoon against Finland, and have her fingers crossed that other results go their way.

Manitoba couple Kadriana and Colton Lott win Canadian mixed doubles curling championship

After previously settling for silver medals on two occasions, Manitoba’s Kadriana and Colton Lott finally became Canadian mixed doubles curling champions on Friday.

“Third time’s a charm,” Colton said not long after the couple celebrated a magic moment.

The Lotts, a married couple from Winnipeg Beach, defeated Laura Walker and Kirk Muyres 7-5 in the final at the Aitkens Centre and Capital Winter Club in Fredericton, N.B.

Team Lott won a measurement in the eighth and final end to steal one point and clinch the victory. Had the measurement gone the other way, the game would have gone to an extra end, tied 6-6.

The Lotts went undefeated in taking the gold medal for the first time. They settled for silver in 2018 and 2021, losing finals to Walker/Muyres and Kerri Einarson/Brad Gushue, and took home bronze medals in 2019.

They have been one of the best mixed doubles teams in the country for years, and now have a Canadian title to prove it.

“We know the feeling of losing that game and to finally win it is just an unbelievable feeling,” Colton said. “It’s relief and happiness. With how much we put into it this week, we’re just super ecstatic and we can’t wait to represent Canada.”

Team Lott will do just that at the world mixed doubles curling championship in Osterund, Sweden, April 20-27. Canada has never won a gold medal at the world championships, which started in 2008.

As meaningful as it is for both Colton and Kadriana, the athletes, to have done this, it’s something even more special because they did it together, as a team, in one of the few sports that has a discipline in which husbands and wives can compete together.

“It’s a wonderful feeling,” Kadriana said through tears. “I can’t even tell you how much it means to have won this, with Colton, finally, and just had the chance to take this all in.

“To play together and travel together and do the sport you love, it’s hard to come by.”

The Lotts went 7-0 in the round-robin and were seeded first for the playoffs, meaning they got a bye to the quarterfinals.

They beat Nancy Martin/Steve Laycock 11-3 in the quarter-final, took down Jocelyn Peterman/Brett Gallant 8-4 in the semifinal and then topped Walker and Muyres, a team that focuses exclusively on mixed doubles curling.

“In my mind, we were very dominant,” Colton said. “We played the game to our strength and just really tried to put pressure on the other team to make harder shots than we had to.”

Colton Lott also plays second for the Matt Dunstone team out of Manitoba and won a silver medal at the Brier in 2023.

FREDERICTON – Kadriana and Colton Lott defeated Laura Walker and Kirk Muyres 7-5 on Friday to capture the gold medal at the Canadian mixed doubles curling championship.

The Winnipeg-based Lotts scored twice in the seventh end to take a 6-5 advantage. Then they added one in the eighth to secure their winning margin. Both teams entered the final with undefeated records.

But it was close as a measurement was required following the final shot of the eighth.

After Walker’s final shot, an attempted triple takeout, just missed the remaining stones were measured twice before the Lotts were declared the winner. It was their first championship on their third appearance at the national final.

“Before he put the stick to it, I was pretty confident,” said Colton Lott. “But then he put the stick to it, and it was really close.

“I thought it was us, but just barely… by less than a tick. I looked at Kadriana and gave her the ‘I think it’s us’ look – and then he went around again.”

Added Kadriana Lott: “I couldn’t even look. I was standing back trying to keep myself busy. I didn’t even want to look at his expression. You’re either playing another end, or you’re winning.”

Edmonton’s Walker and Muyres, of Sherwood Park, Alta., opened the contest quickly, scoring one in the first and two more in the second. But the Lotts rallied with three of their own in the third to tie the score.

“Being down three is OK in mixed doubles,” said Kadriana Lott. “It’s mixed doubles, anything can happen.

“You’re always still in it. You can steal, you can score a bundle, you can tally up five. I knew we just had to stay in it and focus on making the shots.”

Walker and Muyres went back ahead with a single in the fourth before the Lotts countered with one in the fifth to make it 4-4.

Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant of Chestermere, Alta., claimed the bronze medal with a 6-3 win over Madison and Rylan Kleiter of Saskatoon. Peterman-Gallant scored singles in the final three ends for the victory.

The Lotts, Walker and Muyres as well as Peterman and Gallant all qualified for the Canadian mixed doubles trials that will determine Canada’s ’26 Olympic team.
