New life in the Badeschloss – A Bad Gastein landmark reawakens

Three months after the opening of the Straubinger Grand Hotel, the Badeschloss opposite is once again revitalising the iconic Straubingerplatz in Bad Gastein. But what makes this historic building so special and why should you have it on your winter travel list? Here is everything you need to know.

Steeped in history Badeschloss

The Badeschloss , built in 1791, may be the oldest building on Straubingerplatz, but it exudes a fresh, youthful charm. The colourful and playful interior design of the castle is a tribute to contemporary bathing and accommodation culture, which fits seamlessly into the historical context.

Hotel ensemble straubingerplatz working with the layers of the past..

BWM Designers & Architects developed a sophisticated hotel concept that extends far beyond just the buildings themselves, and were responsible for the overall realisation of the project. The acclaimed Vienna-based architecture firm was commissioned by Hirmer Immobilien to restore Bad Gastein’s Straubingerplatz to its former glory – in line with the principle of preserving history while judiciously complementing it with new elements.

The Vienna-based architecture firm BWM had the overall responsibility for rehabilitating the hotel ensemble consisting of Hotel Straubinger, Badeschloss and Alte Post, located near Bad Gastein’s picturesque waterfall, as well as for designing new interiors and additional structures. The new 4-star superior / 5-star hotels aim to establish Straubingerplatz as a vibrant hub for visitors and locals alike. With this in mind, BWM Designers & Architects, who pride themselves on having successfully realised countless hospitality projects, developed an open hotel concept that extends beyond the 19,000m² in floor area.

It is important to us to work with – and not against – the remnants and layers of the past. They give old buildings their charm and their special appeal; it’s what makes them so attractive and unique.

A thoughtful approach to heritage-protected architecture.

Built between 1791 and 1888, Hotel Straubinger, Badeschloss and Alte Post (the old post office building) have long served as an emblem of the popular spa town’s historical centre and are now heritage-protected monuments. “Working with the layers of the past” was BWM Designers & Architects’ guiding principle for the redesign of Straubingerplatz. “Our planning ideas are always preceded by a precise historical analysis,” BWM designer and architect Erich Bernard explains, “in line with the maxim – loosely based on Adolf Loos – that you can change anything, as long as you know what you are changing.” The rehabilitation of these heritage-protected buildings called for a thoughtful approach; all measures were coordinated with the Federal Monuments Office and the Bad Gastein municipality. “It is important to us to work with – and not against – the remnants and layers of the past,” Bernard continues. “It’s precisely those layers that give old buildings their charm and special appeal and make them so unique.”

More than just the buildings … 

The open hotel concept developed by BWM Designers & Architects is mindful of each hotel’s unique character and its role as part of the ensemble, as well as taking account of Straubingerplatz as a whole. This centrally located square has all the makings of a lively hub – for visitors and locals alike. BWM not only redesigned the existing buildings (13,000m2 floor area), but also developed ideas that extend beyond them. The goal was to breathe new life into the entire Straubingerplatz and restore it to its former glory.

Born from the details of the past.

A high degree of expertise, care and passion went into renovating these hotels, which have reopened under the Travel Charme Hotels & Resorts brand. In collaboration with moodley brand identity, BWM developed a brand philosophy for the ensemble as a whole. The new Hotel Straubinger, named after a prominent local hotelier family, pays homage to the original grand hotel. It was born from the facets of its past, boasting understated elegance and poignant grandeur. The adjacent Badeschloss celebrates its own history, while taking a playful approach to bathing culture. It is a place where the past meets the present, and its atmosphere is vibrant and sociable. The interior design concept was partly inspired by the production entitled “Mystery Sonatas / for Rosa” by the Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.

Curated art concept.

Together with Schwanenfliess’s Andrea von Goetz, initiator and mastermind behind the renowned art festivals sommer.frische.kunst and art.bad.gastein, BWM Designers & Architects also developed a specially curated art concept for both Hotel Straubinger and Badeschloss: contemporary artists from both Bad Gastein and beyond (for instance, from the US and South Africa) have provided an exclusive selection of works that interact with the town and its tradition and history as well as with the hotels themselves.

Down to the smallest detail …

The art concept is complemented by a greenery and styling concept specially tailored to both hotels and developed by BWM together with Atelier Peter Weisz. The bamboo palms in the grand hall of Hotel Straubinger, for instance, are more than 2m tall and underline its sumptuous French flair. The Badeschloss, on the other hand, features greenery that reinforces the hotel’s retro, bath-inspired look. The décor and styling concept also aligns with the “layers of the past” storytelling. Every single detail – whether a historical found object, a special coffee table book, or a classic or contemporary work of literature – corresponds with the spirit of each individual hotel and has been thoughtfully selected and positioned.

Kurhaus Binz, Strandidyll Heringsdorf, Badeschloss Hotel Bad Gastein – These gorgeous properties are now part of DSR Hotel Holding

The german hotel management company's takeover of travel charme adds 13 hotels and resorts to its portfolio, including top addresses on the baltic sea, in the alps, and on lake garda., by binu starnegg, february 29, 2024.

Hirmer Hospitality and DSR Hotel Holding have reached an agreement: subject to the approval of the antitrust authorities, Hirmer will transfer the Travel Charme brand to DSR Hotel Holding by the end of March. DSR will take over all 13 of Travel Charme's upscale hotels on the Baltic and North Seas, in the Harz Mountains, in the Alps and on Lake Garda for an undisclosed sum. No layoffs are planned.

Since the acquisition of Travel Charme in 2018, Hirmer expanded the brand's reach with new openings in St. Peter Ording and Bad Gastein, with a brand new property opening soon in Salò (Lake Garda). Travel Charme specializes in hotels with a unique character at outstanding locations – particularly on the Baltic coast and in the Alps. The Kurhaus Binz on Rügen and the Strandidyll Heringsdorf on Usedom are some of their prize assets, as are the Fürstenhaus am Achensee in Tyrol and the Badeschloss Hotel Bad Gastein in Salzburg. As Ferdinand Hirmer, a shareholder of Travel Charme, put it: "It was important to us to create a successful future for the hotels, the company, the guests and above all the employees of Travel Charme. To this end, we looked for suitable partners and investors in a structured process. And in DSR Hotel Holding, we have now found a buyer who appreciates the value of the hotels and our team."

Expanding the portfolio

The acquisition strengthens DSR Hotel Holding's position in Germany and Austria. Once the deal is completed, its new portfolio will number 35 hotels, 21 of which are located in Germany, 9 in Austria, and 5 in Italy. DSR currently owns the hotel and resort brands A-ROSA , aja and HENRI ; the Hotel NEPTUN and Hotel Louis C. Jacob . They also maintain four hotels in Italy: the Alagna Mountain Resort & Spa , the Acaya Golf Resort & Spa , the Riva Toscana Golf Resort & Spa and Borgo di Luce I Monasteri . Karl J. Pojer, CEO of DSR Hotel Holding, is delighted with the acquisition: "By taking over the unique Travel Charme hotels, we will be able to offer our guests even more luxurious, relaxed and varied vacation experiences in exclusive locations."

Munich, November 6, 2023 - This year, the winter season begins with a crucial question for all those who choose the ski resort of Gastein or have it on their wish list: is it Grandezza at the Straubinger Grand Hotel or modern ambience at the lifestyle Hotel Badeschloss. Newly opened and located on the legendary Straubingerplatz, both hotels offer the perfect base for Christmas and winter vacations for all connoisseurs of design and travel styles.

From Straubinger Square to the slopes The recently opened Straubinger Grand Hotel and Badeschloss are located, directly opposite each other, in the heart of Bad Gastein. Just 50 meters from both accommodations, the ski bus runs at regular intervals to the four local ski areas of the Gastein Valley: the family ski area Skischaukel Dorfgastein-Großarltal, the ski area Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel near the train station in Bad Gastein with numerous ski lodges, the Graukogel in Bad Gastein for ski fans with more experience and Sportgastein for freeriders and off-slope skiers at the end of the valley. Gastein is considered Salzburg's highest glacier-free ski area with 43 lifts that take winter sports enthusiasts up to 2,700 meters in altitude. Winter sports potpourri: About skids, carriages, sleds, and icy waterfalls Travel Charme Hotels vacationers have a broad choice of winter transportation. At over 1,500 meters, the valley floor in Sportgastein is a paradise for cross-country skiers, as are the seven cross-country trails and 40 kilometers of groomed running trails in Bad Gastein, Bad Hofgastein and Dorfgastein. In addition, icy waterfalls challenge you to a climbing adventure. You can move along comfortably on horse-drawn carriages or dog sleds. You may find a little more speed in the Aeroplan natural toboggan run in Bad Hofgastein, 3.3 kilometers long, and the Bellevue toboggan run in Bad Gastein, 2.5 kilometers long that both lead down into the valley. The latter lives up to its name, as the ride goes in switchbacks and straights partly through the deep snow-covered forest. In addition, a 100-kilometer network of trails is prepared for winter hiking in impressive mountain scenery. The teams at both hotels ensure an individual ski experience; from skiing instructors to ski tours and many other winter sports activities, all services and tours can be organized. In addition, the cooperation with Sport Schober, which has a store at the valley station "Stubnerkogel", allows uncomplicated outfit changes. The winter sport's dearest friends: wellness and gourmet Both the Straubinger Grand Hotel and the Badeschloss have a spacious wellness area where guests can relax before, after or even without winter sports activities. At the Grand Hotel Straubinger, the wellness program is based on four pillars and seven themed worlds. Since the feeling of well-being is always fed by good cuisine, the Straubinger Saal, Straubinger Bar, Straubinger Café and Wine Cellar, as well as Auntie Heidis and the Schlossbar serve delicacies. French gourmet cuisine, coffee and cakes, and signature drinks on the "classic" side of Straubingerplatz and cosmopolitan street, soul food and highballs on the other.
