Tropical view of Copacabana Beach with city skyline of Rio de Janeiro Brazil aerial view

Cruise to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio de janeiro shore excursions, amazing experiences coming soon., sorry, there are no excursions for this port at this moment., things to do in rio de janeiro.

Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Pick a Beach, Any Beach

Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Disembark your ship, then hop in a taxi to famous Rio beaches like Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon, which make up a long stretch of golden sand (broken up only by the dramatic Arpoador rock, a popular sunset spot) between Copacabana and Ipanema. Or, if you don't want to sip a caipirinha cocktail on any of these people-watching party beaches, head a bit more off the beaten path to suburban Barra da Tijuca, where many events during the 2016 Olympics took place.

Gain Some Perspective

Aerial view of Rio de Janeiro with Christ Redeemer and Corcovado Mountain

Head for the hills — or mountains, to be precise — that surround Rio's picturesque waterfront neighborhoods. Get a bus to the base station of the Corcovado funicular railway, which takes you to the base of Rio's "world wonder" Christ the Redeemer statue. Enjoy that sweeping panorama, then take a taxi to Urca and catch a cable car up the Pão de Açucar (Sugar Loaf) mountain, which offers a view that's slightly more constricted, but every bit as ... well, marvelous.

Escadaria Selaron famous public steps of artist Jorge Selaron in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Trace Overlooked History

Enjoy your time at the beach and in the mountains, but appreciate Rio's history if you can. Ride a taxi or bus to the Lapa Arches, an ancient aqueduct then walk up the colorful Lapa Stairs into Santa Teresa, where you can ride a cable car through this postcard-perfect historical neighborhood. Have sunset cocktails on the rooftop of the Santa Teresa hotel, or walk back down the stairs to Rio's overlooked downtown, where the Theatro Municipal (built in the early 20th century to mimic the Paris Opera) injects a bit of yesterday's Europe into today's South America.

Picanha. Brazilian traditional steak in barbecue.

LOCAL CUISINE

Sit down at a Churrascaria and enjoy succulent cuts of Brazilian beef, pork and lamb sliced tableside by gaucho servers. Or, sit down for a more understated Brazilian meal at Garota de Ipanema, a beach-adjacent cafe where the famous "Girl from Ipanema" song is said to have been written. Enjoy a bite on the beach if you see a beach seller slinging sticks of salty, grilled queijo coalho cheese, which pairs perfectly with caipirinha cocktails made with Brazilian cachaça rum.

Beach vendor selling brightly colored kanga sarongs

Employ one of two shopping strategies in Rio de Janeiro. Head to luxury malls like Shopping Leblon for big-name clothing brands. Otherwise, stop souvenir and sundry sellers who roam the sandy shores of Copacabana and Ipanema, whether for kitschy Christ the Redeemer keychains and paperweights or beach towels emblazoned with the yellow, blue and green Brazilian flag.

Award-Winning Brazil Cruises

On a cruise to Brazil, you’ll find warm, white-sand beaches, big-city excitement, incredible historic sites, and Amazon adventures. Sail to bustling, vibrant ports where you’ll be greeted with a welcoming embrace by the hospitable Brazilian people. Get up close to some of the most abundant, awe-inspiring nature that Brazil is famous for.

Brazil cruises will take you to famous landmarks like Rio’s Christ the Redeemer statue and the massive São Paulo Cathedral. Enjoy an afternoon on the unspoiled beaches of Ilhabela, or a windsurfing adventure on Armação Beach in Buzios. Learn the secrets of the samba dance while exploring the cultural treasures of the world’s most famous Carnival. Find your vacation rhythm and embrace the moment as you embark on a cruise to South America with Celebrity.

Brazil Cruise Highlights

On a cruise to Brazil, you’ll visit legendary beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema, so famous that they’ve inspired songs. Both are a constant buzz of soccer, beach tennis, volleyball, and beautiful people. You can walk along the white sand beach of horseshoe-shaped Ferradura beach in glamorous Buzios, and lounge on urban Gonzaga Beach, near São Paulo. It’s here that city dwellers come to relax and play against a backdrop of ultra-modern skyscrapers and forested mountains.

Beautiful Views

Mountainous Brazil is all about jaw-dropping views. Two of the most famous are Corcovado and Sugar Loaf in Rio de Janeiro; head up either of these dramatic, conical peaks for vistas of the city and its necklace of golden beaches below. You can also find picture-perfect views of Santos and its coastline of golden beaches and verdant hills from the top of Monte Serrat, accessed via a steep funicular railway.

Spain to deport dozens of cruise passengers after removing them from ship

Spain will on Thursday deport more than 60 Bolivians who arrived last week by cruise ship in the northeastern port of Barcelona but were not allowed to disembark because their visas were false.

The Spanish government’s office in Barcelona said 65 of the 69 Bolivians who arrived will be flown to the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz. The plane will be paid for by MSC Cruises , which owns the ship in which they arrived from Brazil .

Four members of a family with Spanish relatives will be allowed to enter Spain.

Spanish authorities said the Bolivian passengers had false visas to enter the European border-free Schengen area, an ID-check-free travel zone comprising 29 European countries.

The Bolivians’ visa problems meant that the cruise ship with more than 1,000 passengers was stuck for two days in Barcelona and unable to continue on its route in the Mediterranean Sea until the situation was resolved.

The cruise ship set sail after the Bolivians were temporarily accommodated in another boat while police interviewed them.

MSC Cruises said last week the Bolivian passengers’ documentation appeared correct upon boarding in Brazil.

MSC Armonia, with more than 1,000 passengers reportedly on board, plans to sail to Italy on Thursday, the cruise company said.

Solange Duarte, a Bolivian diplomat in Barcelona, told The Associated Press on Wednesday she had received reports that some of the stranded Bolivians had been duped into obtaining fake visas but had no further information.

“We have asked the families to indicate who has processed this visa and we have not gotten answers,” she said.

Spain ’s national police were looking into the possibility of a fake visa scam, Duarte said.

MSC Cruises said in a statement Wednesday the Bolivian “passengers appeared to have proper documentation upon boarding in Brazil ” but Spanish authorities later said the visas were not valid for entry into the Schengen area.

Crew member missing at sea during round-the-world cruise

The ship - which can carry 1,400 guests at a time - turned back to join the search for the missing crew member. It had been due to return back to the UK on Sunday morning.

Ambassador Cruise's Ambience ship

A crew member on a 120-day voyage around the world is missing at sea.

Ambassador Cruise Line's Ambience ship was making its final journey from Lisbon, Portugal back to the UK when the crew member was reported missing.

In a statement to Sky News, the British cruise line said Ambience had initially turned back to "retrace her route to the ship's position when the crew member was last seen".

However, it has since been "released by coastguard authorities from the search" and is "continuing on her original course back to the UK".

According to the statement, the crew member, who was from India, was reported missing "shortly after breakfast" this morning while the ship was off Cape Finisterre, on the west coast of Spain .

It said thorough ship-wide searches were conducted for the person, who has not been named, and the local coastguard was informed.

Ambience had departed from Tilbury, Essex on 6 January and is due to return to the port on Sunday.

Barcelona’s €30m Vitor Roque looks set for a loan. But will they wait for him?

Vitor Roque arrived at Barcelona in early January to the kind of fanfare usually reserved for an established star.

The day before the young Brazilian landed in Spain, Barca published a video featuring a CGI tiger prowling across the pitch at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys. Other social media posts followed Roque looking around the Barca museum, visiting city landmarks, and printing his own shirt in the Barca shop.

Roque’s nickname — Tigrinho (‘little tiger’ in Portuguese) — could be used as a discount code on match tickets over the next month. It all added to a slickly coordinated call to action — louder and more sophisticated than anything we have seen accompany other recent transfers.

His signing was a big gamble for cash-strapped Barca. Their deal with his Brazilian top-flight club Athletico Paranaense, agreed last July, was for an initial €30million (£25.6m; $32.2m at current exchange rates) plus a potential further €31m in add-ons.

Què està passant a Barcelona? 👀 pic.twitter.com/YMD7pjws8o — FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona_cat) December 26, 2023

At the time, Xavi was asking for the signing of a replacement for Sergio Busquets to be prioritised. Instead, the money was spent on an unproven 18-year-old Brazilian forward. Even though Deco had not officially taken up his role as Barca’s new sporting director, the deal was his doing. It was such a Deco signing that he was the one who travelled to Roque’s home in Curitiba for a charm offensive.

It had been planned for Roque to join up with his new team-mates in January this year. When it looked like Barca would struggle to register him, the plan was pushed back until the summer. Then the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury Gavi suffered in November changed things. With space freed up on the salary limit but no money to bring in a direct replacement, Roque’s arrival was set for January again.

Supporters knew very little about Roque. He had played 26 minutes for Brazil in March 2023 and had completed only one season at senior level, but fans welcomed the news with open arms. Many were more than ready for a positive boost, with the team in a slump that would culminate in Xavi’s dramatic decision to step down at the end of the season — which he reversed last week.

Xavi's Barcelona U-turn - the dramatic story behind his decision to stay

There is a wider context too. This past year has been one of the darkest periods in Barca’s history, with the emergence of the Negreira case only adding to the pain of long-standing financial trouble and other recent scandals. Even the 2021 departure of Lionel Messi still hurts.

Roque was never going to be the unique remedy to it all. He should have arrived with a low profile, accompanied by a message that patience would be required — but Joan Laporta’s Barcelona is a seller of illusion and Roque was presented as the team’s potential saviour.

The reality was different. Dressing-room sources — who did not wish to be named to protect their positions — spoke with The Athletic  in January of their initial impressions of Roque in training. They said it was quickly obvious that he had improvements to make in terms of technical skill.

Even in his first steps at Barca, in sessions held in front of the media at the club’s Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, some present were already commenting on how difficult he found it to keep up in the team’s famous ‘ rondo ’ drills.

When Roque made his debut as a second-half substitute against Las Palmas in a La Liga match on January 4, he missed a couple of clear chances on goal. The same happened against fourth-tier side UD Barbastro in the Copa del Rey a few days later.

His first goal came on the last day of January with a header against Osasuna . In the following match, against Deportivo Alaves, he scored again before being sent off for a second yellow card.

cruise from barcelona to brazil

Those goals were the high point but both came from the bench as an impact player. When Roque started matches, you could see signs of struggle and how he needed time to settle. The problem was that, after the big build-up, he was already being judged by different standards.

When Roque made his second La Liga start, in the April 13 away match at Cadiz that fell between the two legs of Barca’s Champions League quarter-final with Paris Saint-Germain, the critical reaction from fans on social media and in the local Catalan press was telling. It was as if he had already been written off.

The forward, who turned 19 in February, was not great in that Cadiz game. He played 61 minutes, completing no successful dribbles, making four passes and taking one shot, which was not on target. Since then, his role has been reduced. In the past two games, he has been an unused substitute and was not even seen warming up.

cruise from barcelona to brazil

Barca are now planning to loan Roque out next season. Sources from the coaching staff and the board of directors say the ideal scenario would be for him to get regular minutes at another top-flight Spanish side to help him get to know the language and the style of football.

“We will sit down to see what is best for each player,” Xavi said when asked about Roque’s future before Monday’s game with Valencia . “It’s not easy to come from Brazil, to adapt at 18, to make a difference at Barca. He needs time, minutes, and maybe more confidence. He is capable of playing for Barca for a long time. At the end of the season, we will decide.”

The process of the past few months poses another question: did Barca need to spend all that money on a raw teenager?

This season, La Masia’s graduates have made a remarkable impact, with Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi breaking into the first team and others, including 18-year-old striker Marc Guiu , also getting minutes. It took Guiu less than a minute to score a goal on his debut against Athletic Bilbao in October and he scored again in the Champions League defeat by Royal Antwerp in December. He has two goals in 185 minutes — the same as Roque in his 318 minutes.

At least now there is a more public recognition of reality: that Roque requires time to adapt, that he is very young and needs a process that Barca, with its demands of immediate impact, cannot offer him today.

Some have drawn a comparison between Roque and Vinicius Junior , who arrived very young at Real Madrid for a similar fee and with similar expectations, in 2018. He started with Real Madrid Castilla, the club’s reserve side, and it took him a few seasons to become the remarkable player he is today.

Putting all questions over potential talent aside, it remains to be seen whether Barcelona have the patience required.

Their attitude has suggested a different outlook.

Floods in southern brazil kill at least 75 people over 7 days, with 103 people missing.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Massive floods in Brazil’s southern Rio Grande do Sul state have killed at least 75 people over the last seven days, and another 103 were reported missing, local authorities said Sunday.

At least 155 people were injured, while damage from the rains forced more than 88,000 people from their homes. Approximately 16,000 took refuge in schools, gymnasiums and other temporary shelters.

The floods left a wake of devastation, including landslides, washed-out roads and collapsed bridges across the state.

Operators reported electricity and communications cuts. More than 800,000 people are without a water supply, according to the civil defense agency, which cited figures from water company Corsan.

A rescue team pulled an elderly man in serious medical condition into a helicopter from a remote area in the Bento Gonçalves municipality, according to footage from military firefighters. Torrents of brown water poured over a nearby dam.

On Saturday evening, residents in the town of Canoas stood up to their shoulders in muddy water and formed a human chain to pull boats carrying people to safety, according to video footage shared by local UOL news network.

The Guaiba river reached a record level of 17.5 feet on Sunday morning at 8 a.m. local time, surpassing levels seen during a historic 1941 deluge, when the river reached 4.76 meters.

“I repeat and insist: the devastation to which we are being subjected is unprecedented,” state Gov. Eduardo Leite said Sunday morning. He had previously said the state will need a “kind of ‘Marshall Plan’ to be rebuilt.”

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva visited Rio Grande do Sul for a second time on Sunday, accompanied by Defense Minister José Múcio, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad and Environment Minister Marina Silva, among others.

During Sunday mass at the Vatican, Pope Francis said he was praying for the state’s population. “May the Lord welcome the dead and comfort their families and those who had to abandon their homes,” he said.

The downpour started Monday and was expected to last through Sunday.

In some areas, such as valleys, mountain slopes and cities, more than 11.8 inches of rain fell in less than a week, according to Brazil’s National Institute of Meteorology, known by the Portuguese acronym INMET, on Thursday.

A large boat was carried down the raging flood waters when it rammed into a submerged bridge and capsized.

The heavy rains were the fourth such environmental disaster in the state in a year, following floods in July, September and November 2023 that killed 75 people.

Weather across South America is affected by the climate phenomenon El Niño, a periodic, naturally occurring event that warms surface waters in the Equatorial Pacific region.

In Brazil, El Niño has historically caused droughts in the north and intense rainfall in the south.

This year, the impacts of El Niño have been particularly dramatic, with a historic drought in the Amazon. Scientists say extreme weather is happening more frequently due to human-caused climate change.

The flooded Taquari river bridge is covered in debris from all the water on May 3, 2024.

“These tragedies will continue to happen, increasingly worse and more frequent,” said Suely Araújo, a public policy coordinator at the Climate Observatory, a network of dozens of environmental and social groups.

Brazil needs to adjust to the effects of climate change, she said in a Friday statement, referring to a process known as adaptation.
