Disney Cruise Stateroom Guarantee – What Is It and Will It Save Me Money?

Sharing is caring!

Have you ever wondered what a Disney Cruise Stateroom Guarantee is?

You might have heard of something called a Stateroom Guarantee, or read about a GTY, IGT, OGT, or even a VGT.

What do these words and abbreviations actually mean? And can knowing about them actually save you money on your Disney Cruise?

Here is a guide to help you understand firstly what a Guaranteed Stateroom or Cabin actually is so that you can make a decision of whether it is the right option for you.

Disney Cruise Staterooms

Usually, when you book a cruise stateroom you pick a specific one. Usually, but not if you book a Disney Cruise Stateroom Guarantee.

disneywondertour

A cruise ship is not like a hotel where you book a type of room and it is assigned when you check-in. Usually, you will book a specific stateroom so you will know exactly where you will be on the ship.

However, sometimes Disney will offer Guaranteed Staterooms for select sailings.

This doesn’t happen on all Disney sailings. Guaranteed staterooms are usually offered closer to the sail dates. Disney will have assessed that they aren’t selling staterooms at the rate they wanted to, so will start to offer discounted Guaranteed Staterooms.

Many Disney cruises sell out so they will not offer Guaranteed rates.

Disneywondertowelanimal

The first decision that you need to make is which type of stateroom you want with these choices:

  • An Inside Stateroom
  • An Outside Stateroom
  • A Stateroom with a Verandah or Balcony

There are also Concierge staterooms on all Disney ships but we won’t talk about those here as you will never be offered a Guaranteed Stateroom for Concierge.

If you want to see more about the specific advantages and features of each type of stateroom on a Disney Cruise then we have put this together for you in our Disney Cruise Stateroom Guide .

Here are some abbreviations you may see:

  • GTY – Guaranteed Stateroom
  • IGT – Guaranteed Inside Stateroom
  • OGT – Guaranteed Outside Stateroom
  • VGT Guaranteed Verandah Stateroom

Why Would You Book A Stateroom Guarantee on a Disney Cruise?

Sometimes you don’t have a choice as that is all that is available in the category that you want.

However, the best reason to book a cruise stateroom guarantee is to save money .

disney cruise room assignment

Let’s look at an actual example with prices.

If you take a 5-night San Diego cruise leaving on 8th April 2022 we can look at how much you could save with a Guarantee Stateroom.

If you look at the prices below you will see that the “headline rates” for that sailing start at

  • Inside Stateroom $2,413
  • Outside Stateroom $2,843
  • Verandah Stateroom $3,533

disney cruise room assignment

If you look a little deeper and see how much the individual Categories of stateroom are, then you can see that both Guaranteed and pick your own stateroom choices are available.

The rates for an Inside stateroom start anywhere between $2,413 and $3,353. A difference of $940 for a 5-night cruise.

The difference between a Standard Inside Stateroom and a Deluxe Inside stateroom is that the Standard stateroom does not have a split bath.

So you can see here that if you are prepared to let Disney allocate a Standard Inside Stateroom you will pay $2413 instead of $3,193.

The difference between the Deluxe Inside Stateroom and the Deluxe Guaranteed is a bit unusual. Here the Guaranteed Stateroom costs more money.

The reason this is because there will always be different prices within categories. Some locations are seen as better than others. The higher up in the ship you are, usually the higher the price.

What is probably happening here is that the Deluxe Guaranteed Staterooms are in a better position on the ship. The ones where you can pick your stateroom are most probably on Deck 1.

disney cruise room assignment

Here you can see below the terms and conditions that you have to accept if you book a Guaranteed Stateroom with Disney Cruise Lines.

You need to be aware of the restrictions that you will accept in return for a lower rate.

The wording below is for the Guaranteed Inside Stateroom “with Restrictions”. The Deluxe Inside Stateroom – Guaranteed – is more expensive and does not have these restrictions.

disney cruise room assignment

Below you can see the starting rates for Oceanview Staterooms for that sailing.

You can save almost $900 if you book a Guaranteed Oceanview Room with Restrictions instead of a Deluxe Oceanview where you pick your stateroom location.

disney cruise room assignment

As you can see below you can save $700 if you book a Guaranteed Verandah Stateroom.

disney cruise room assignment

You need to note that the Category that is Guaranteed is the 7A which is the Navigators verandah. These are unique to Disney Wonder and Wish.

They have an enclosed Verandah with benches on either side. You do have access to fresh air, but the experience is very different from most of the other balconies on the ship.

So if you book a category 7A you do have to be prepared that you will be given one of these staterooms.

When Will I Know Where My Stateroom Is Located?

The whole point of booking a Guaranteed Stateroom is that you will now know where your stateroom is located when you book.

You will have to wait to find out.

But how long will you have to wait to see which exact stateroom number you have been allocated?

There is no exact answer to this, but usually, it is around 7 to 14 days before sailing.

It can be as late as the actual day of sailing so you only find out when you check-in at the port. This is rare though.

Most times you will know at least a day before and often a week or two in advance of your sailing.

Will I Get an Upgrade?

Well, it’s highly unlikely that you will.

disney cruise room assignment

Therefore you should never think that you will get an upgrade if you book a guaranteed stateroom.

it sometimes happens. You may book a Guaranteed Standard Inside Stateroom and get an upgrade to a Deluxe. Or even if you are very lucky an upgrade to an Outside Stateroom (although this is rare).

However, you aren’t going to book a guaranteed inside stateroom and find yourself magically upgraded to the Walt Disney Suite. Or even a Verandah!

I Need More Than One Stateroom – Should I Book a Guaranteed Stateroom?

Not unless you realize that the staterooms in your group could be very far apart from each other.

Disney Wish Staterooms

If you book more than one Guaranteed Stateroom even though they are on the same booking, you could be located in very different areas of the ship. You could have one stateroom on Deck 2 and another on Dec 7.

Having said this, Disney really does try to place you as close together as possible.

I have done this a couple of times and once we were on the same deck but 12 staterooms down the hall. Another time one was on Deck 5 and the other almost below them on Deck 4. This was fine for us as it was with my adult children, but this might not work so well for other family groups.

What If I Do Not Like the Location of the Guarantee Stateroom I Have Been Allocated?

What if after taking a chance, you don’t like the stateroom you have been allocated. You really wanted Deck 7 but you got Deck 1. You got port side but you wanted starboard.

Disney wish Staterooms

There is nothing you can do, except upgrade to a non Guarantee Stateroom, if one is even available.

The whole point of the Guaranteed Stateroom concept is that you give up the option to choose your stateroom and have one allocated to you. If you have taken the chance and don’t get the stateroom that you want, then you will have to accept it.

The only exception to this is if you can upgrade. But you will have to pay extra for this and there will be a limited selection. This would usually mean a costly upgrade payment so you can choose your exact stateroom.

Disney Dream Stateroom

Also, be aware that by the time you know what your stateroom allocation is there may be very limited options available to be booked. You will have a limited choice of staterooms as it is very possible that most are sold out at that stage. It may even be that everything is booked and you don’t change.

Always be sure when you book a Guaranteed Stateroom that you will be happy with any stateroom that you are allocated. It will save you money but it is a trade-off as you do take a risk.

Who Should Book a Disney Cruise Guaranteed Stateroom?

  • Guests who want to save money and are prepared to trade this for not booking a specific stateroom.
  • Those who will be happy with any stateroom within the category they booked.
  • Possibly have cruised before so they know their own individual needs and expectations for a stateroom.

Who Should NOT Book a Disney Cruise Guaranteed Stateroom?

  • If you are expecting an upgrade.
  • If a certain stateroom location is important to you.
  • You want your party to have rooms next to or even close to you.

Verandah Guaranteed room assignment

If you booked Guaranteed verandah room, how many days out was your room assigned?

@gingerSnaps543222 I believe you’re being paged

I think mine was a VGT rate, actually, and IIRC we got our room assignment about 2 weeks out?

I booked VGT. Saved $1200 from my original booking which had the 10% off placeholder discount. I did add the travel insurance at the suggestion of my TA since it became non-refundable.

Well I booked 2 VGTs for January a few weeks ago…but I haven’t of course been assigned a room yet. I’ll let you know when it happens

“Category: VGT Deck: To Be Assigned Location: To Be Assigned”

for both right now.

*This is my cruise date: January 06 - 13, 2023 ** This is when I booked: 7/20/22 for one and 7/23/22 for the other.

*GT is usually within 14 days of embarkation.

A specific category GTY like 8A GTY is usually further out - like 30 days or so.

BUT it can be up to at the port on embarkation day.

So when you get the yellow tags for luggage, does it omit room number and I just add those on with a sharpie?

I’ll be leaving for Disney on a Tuesday and cruise doesn’t leave until Saturday. I can’t remember how soon I got my tags last year.

I have never done a *GT so I’m not sure - but I think the bar code links to your reservation and that is what is scanned.

Or you can just have the porters put tags on at the port when you have the cabin assignment.

My tags had the room number on them. They only came a couple of days before I sailed

Im on my 3rd gt. First one i never got tags, assigned 15d out. Second we got tags, assigned about 2 weeks out. Both times we got great rooms. No upgrade on the dream igt, it was a standard w no split bathroom BUT super quiet midship deck 7. For the magic vgt we went from 6a to 5c, aft deck 6 near the elevators. Awesome room.

This time we are vgt on the dec 17 fantasy. Hoping for midship since DH gets seasick and the caribbean in dec is not the med in june. Will try to get an early port arrival time and upgrade at port if not. There’s a thread on disboards where people report their assignments, dates, etc

I’ve done it twice in the last 6 months. One was about 2 weeks out, and the other was about 8 days out.

FWIW, we always got a decent version of our guaranteed room. Nothing “awesome” or slightly better than expected. But nevertheless what we expected, so we were happy. You do always hope for something a bit better, though!

Got my VGT room assignment yesterday, 16 days out. Got a deluxe family Oceanview stateroom with Verandah in 4E category so we have an extended verandah. Had originally booked 5A regular verandah room before switching to the VGT. Saved $1200 and got a better room than we had booked. Yay!

Just got our rooms

We’re next door to each other

7612 and 7614. Now I’ve got to go see where and what type that is. But yay for being next door and connecting.

It’s 5B, sleeps four but is not the family size. But it’s not obstructed so that’s nice. *Okay it’s technically a tiny bit obstructed but I couldn’t even tell that until someone mentioned that we have a sliver of white wall on the edge of the balcony.

Also my cruise is in 15 days to give you an idea of when. It’s possible the room numbers were showing up prior though cuz I have been in a tizzy lately and haven’t checked. *Okay they definitely showed up today after I called and removed my mother from one of the rooms, because in the receipt of doing that the room still said GTY. I’m not sure if me calling affected the room assignment or if it was just coincidence it happened right after.

Yay! Enjoy your cruise.

Can you request them to be adjoining and connecting?

I didn’t but the reservation numbers were connected via the website so I’m sure they tried because of that. There is probably a way to request officially.

We got our room assignment today, 24 days out from our sailing. We had a 6A GTY and got assigned a 4A room, which is awesome, except we are directly below Mickey’s pool. It’s going to be noisy but at least we have some extra space!

We ended up getting our assignment 16d out. A 5A but directly above cabanas. We upgraded at port to concierge! If you get there early, it can’t hurt to ask!

What if online there are no concierge rooms left? Maybe cancellations last minute? We got the first boarding group time.

I’ve been on 3 sailings this year. Two of them were only a third full and this one was almost full. This was the only one with in port upgrades as an option.

I think ours was a last minute. There were 5 cabins available

Answers to the Most Common Disney Cruise Line Questions

disney cruise room assignment

The pricing of a Disney cruise increases as the ship fills so the farther out you book, the lower your costs will usually be!

Take this example; A family of 4 is interested in   booking a 4-night sailing on the Disney Dream for Easter break. Let’s say that it’s mid-February 2018 and a family of 4 is looking to take a 4-night cruise on the Disney Dream the week before Easter, either in 2018 or 2019. What would the difference in price be if they booked 2 months in advance for 2018 or waited another 14 months and booked for 2019? Here is some current pricing based on today’s rates:

Booking 2 months in advance for 2018– 5C verandah = $6,300**

Booking 14 months in advance for 2019 – 5C verandah = $5,800**

Not only could this family have more time to save but they’ll pay considerably less by booking farther out in 2019.

Think this price seems steep for a 4-night cruise? It is - that’s due to the fact that it’s a peak travel period in high demand the week before Easter. If his family decided to sail during a different travel time they could bring down their costs considerably. The same stateroom category for a January 2019 sailing would be only $3,426**.

**Please note that the prices reflected in this example reflect the cost for these specific sailings and cabin type at the time this was written. They are not reflective of all staterooms, ships and sail dates.

2) Are Discounts available for my Disney cruise?

This is a question I receive often from my clients, especially those who are accustomed to Disney releasing discounts for Disney World on a regular basis. Disney Cruise Line works a bit differently from Disney World so here are some answers about discounts!!

Regardless of the ship or price of the cruise, ALL clients who book with Dreams Unlimited receive a discount in the form of an onboard credit.  This onboard credit can be used for ANYTHING you purchase onboard and charge to your stateroom account such as excursions, souvenirs, drinks, spa treatments, adults only dining, and more! The amount of onboard credit varies according to cruise cost. This is a discount that you can count on for every cruise. Although it’s not taken off the price of the cruise itself, the onboard credit will reduce the price you pay for your vacation overall.

There are several discounts which are offered by Disney Cruise Line directly. These CAN BE combined with the onboard credit from Dreams Unlimited. These discounts fall into three categories; Florida resident discounts, Military discounts and last minute “Guarantee” rates.

On select sailings, Disney may release discounts for Florida Residents and/or those with proper Military ID (Photo ID showing Active Military, Retired Military or Department of Defense). The Florida Resident and Military discounts come out much closer to the sail date and are not available for the majority of sailings. They are also usually limited to one or two particular stateroom categories.

Related: Discount Disney Cruise Line Specials

The good news is that if a Florida resident books a cruise far in advance and a Florida resident discount happens to become available for their sail date, your Dreams Unlimited Travel agent will adjust your pricing to the discounted offer automatically. Military discounts can only be applied prior to final payment. Note that this is an advantage of booking with a travel agency such as Dreams Unlimited. If you were to book with Disney directly they would not monitor and adjust your pricing automatically.

The final discount that is sometimes available would be what Disney calls a Guarantee Rate: IGT (Inside Guarantee), OGT (Ocean view Guarantee) or VGT (Verandah Guarantee). In some cases, if the number of guests booked on a particular sailing is lower than what Disney hopes, Disney will occasionally offer these “Guarantee” rates as a way to entice guest to book.

Similar to the Florida resident and Military discounts, these Guarantee rates most often come out very close to the actual sail date and are best booked if guests can be flexible with their travel dates and depart with relatively short notice.

When booking these rates a guest would choose either Inside Guarantee (IGT), Ocean View Guarantee (OGT) or Verandah Guarantee (VGT) and would be assigned a stateroom in that category. For instance the Verandah Guarantee may be obstructed view or unobstructed view on any deck, in any location. The savings for this rate type can be approximately 20%.

There are several conditions guests should be aware of when booking these rates. When booking a IGT/OGT or VGT rate, guests must pay in full upon booking, may not change guest names once booked, may not receive a refund or cancel for any reason, and will be assigned a stateroom number by Disney which they cannot change once assigned.

3) What’s the difference between a Guarantee Rate (IGT/OGT/VGT) and a Guarantee room assignment (GTY)?

Typically when guests book a cruise, they choose a stateroom category and receive a particular stateroom number prior to making their deposit. In some instances, when their desired stateroom category is close to selling out, a stateroom number cannot be assigned and guests will notice that their stateroom number is listed as “GTY” (guarantee). This means that the guest is “guaranteed” to be in this particular category, or possibly higher, but they will not know their exact stateroom location on the ship until shortly before their cruise departs. This is different from the guarantee rate described above because the cruise fare is not discounted.

It’s important to note that when booking a stateroom category with a GTY room assignment, you are not able to change your location once assigned. If you are booking multiple staterooms in the same category and they are listed as GTY there is a chance you could be on different decks. Sometimes guests find that they are upgraded by Disney once they receive their room assignment, however, guests who book a category with a GTY room assignment should assume that they will most likely receive a stateroom number in the category they booked.

Many times clients are ready to book but unsure of all the guests that will be traveling with them, especially if they are booking far in advance. Maybe they are debating between a Verandah and Ocean view and think they’ve made a decision but a month later change their minds. When booking a Disney cruise, don’t feel as though you have to wait to book until you are absolutely certain of all details!  Disney will allow you to change guest names for alternative names at any time up to shortly before the sail date. You also have the flexibility of changing the number of guests in a stateroom once booked. It’s important to note that if you are uncertain as to whether a guest may be traveling with you it’s always best to book the initial reservation with this guest included and then remove them prior to final payment if they cannot make the cruise. There are 2 reasons for this rationale. Adding them initially locks in the most reasonable rate for that guest. If you add them later you’ll have to pay the prevailing current price for your cabin that will likely be higher. In addition, once the ship starts to get filled, Disney sometimes limits the number of guests that are allowed in a room so although your room may have bedding for 4, you may find that Disney will not allow you to add that 4th guest in closer proximity to the sail date.

If you are uncertain as to which stateroom category is right for you, Disney Cruise Line will also allow changes to the stateroom category (or stateroom number) after the deposit has been placed. It’s no problem to switch if you change your mind as long as the stateroom category you want is still available. Once final payment has been made, guests can upgrade to a higher priced stateroom but they may not change to a stateroom that costs less without penalty.

Disney offers 4 general types of stateroom categories : Inside, Ocean view, Verandah and Concierge level. Guest on the Concierge level may choose from verandah staterooms or larger suites and they have access to special concierge services and concierge lounge during their cruise.

On each of the four ships, the Disney Fantasy , Disney Dream , Disney Magic , and Disney Wonder , the numeric category corresponds to the type (and size) of room and the letter corresponds to the placement on the ship. Here are the details….

·          Category 11 and 10 are Inside staterooms : Category 10 is the larger Deluxe Inside with the split bath whereas the 11 has the single bath

·          Category 9 and 8 are Ocean view rooms : Category 8 is offered only on the Fantasy and Dream only and is a larger sized family ocean view room with a window seat and circular tub.

·          Category 7, 6, 5 and 4 are Verandah staterooms :  Categories 5, 6 and 7 are the same size and category 4 is larger. The most reasonable, category 7 will have an obstructed view and a solid white balcony wall. The category 6 has the solid white balcony wall but an unobstructed view. Categories 4 and 5 have the clear balcony wall so you’ll be able to see through to the water when you are sitting on a chair on your balcony.

Tip: First choose which stateroom category appeals to you most and then consider whether the placement of your room on the ship matters to you!

Some guests don’t necessarily care where the stateroom is located but for others it may be more important to be mid ship or on a higher deck. With the exception of the concierge rooms, the stateroom categories will always have a letter next to them which typically ranges from A to E, for instance 5A, 5B, 5C, 5D, 5E. The “A” will always reflect the most ideal location in terms of placement and will cost more than the B, C, D, E etc.

·         An 11A inside will be in a better location and/or higher deck than an 11C. For instance, an 11A on the Magic may be on deck 7 midship whereas the 11C may be deck 2 forward.

·         A 5A verandah will be on a higher deck than a 5D

Travel agents don’t assume you have done extensive research prior to requesting a quote. Some guests, especially those who have sailed with Disney before, may know the exact category or even stateroom number they would like to request. Many do not. Be open and talk with your travel agent about what is important to you and they will use their expertise to place you in the right category if you are uncertain!

Please note that Concierge rooms use a different categorization system with letters only and no numbers. The letter corresponds to the size of the room/suite only. There is no distinction between the placement on the ship since they are all in the same general area to one another.

One additional note about the staterooms on the Disney ships is that all staterooms, with the exception of the category 11 Standard Inside and some handicap accessible rooms, have a split bath format; one bathroom has a sink and tub/shower and the second bathroom has a sink and toilet.

On the newer Dream and Fantasy, there is typically a smaller price difference between categories. However, on the two original ships, the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, you’ll typically see a much larger increase in price as you move up from inside, to ocean view and then verandah. This is especially true for some of the cruises where view is especially desirable, such as the Alaskan sailings on the Magic over the summertime. When moving from Verandah to the Concierge rooms these may be twice as much as the most highly price verandah rooms.

What Is Stateroom GTY On Disney Cruise

Published: December 9, 2023

Modified: December 28, 2023

by Meridel Hawks

what-is-stateroom-gty-on-disney-cruise

Introduction

Going on a cruise vacation is an exciting and memorable experience. One of the key aspects of planning a cruise is selecting the right stateroom. Disney Cruise Line offers a unique accommodation option called Stateroom Guaranteed (GTY) that can add a level of excitement and surprise to your trip.

Unlike traditional stateroom bookings, where you can choose a specific room category and location, opting for a Stateroom GTY allows Disney Cruise Line to assign you a stateroom closer to your sailing date. This means that you won’t know the exact location and category of your stateroom until just before your departure.

While this may sound unconventional, the Stateroom GTY option offers several benefits and can be an excellent choice for some cruisers. In this article, we will explore what Stateroom GTY is, how it works on Disney Cruise Line, and the pros and cons of opting for this accommodation option.

What is Stateroom GTY?

Stateroom GTY, short for Stateroom Guaranteed, is an accommodation option offered by Disney Cruise Line. It differs from the traditional stateroom booking process because you do not select a specific stateroom category or location when making your reservation. Instead, you are guaranteed a stateroom of a specific category and minimum amenities, but the exact room assignment is left to the discretion of the cruise line.

When you opt for a Stateroom GTY, you choose a specific category, such as an Inside, Oceanview, or Balcony stateroom, but you do not have control over the exact room number, deck, or location. This can add an element of surprise and adventure to your cruise experience.

It’s essential to understand that the Stateroom GTY option does not mean you will be upgraded to a higher category stateroom. Instead, it allows Disney Cruise Line to allocate rooms based on availability and optimize the ship’s occupancy.

Keep in mind that Stateroom GTY options may vary by cruise line and itinerary. Disney Cruise Line typically offers Stateroom GTY on select sailings, and the availability is limited. It’s always recommended to check the cruise line’s official website or consult with a travel agent to determine if Stateroom GTY is an option for your specific cruise.

How does Stateroom GTY work on Disney Cruise?

Once you have booked a Stateroom GTY on a Disney Cruise, the process works as follows:

  • The cruise line will assign you a stateroom of the category you selected. You will receive your stateroom assignment shortly before your sailing date.
  • Your stateroom will meet the minimum requirements of the category you chose. For example, if you opted for an Oceanview stateroom, you will be guaranteed a stateroom with a window or porthole to provide a view of the ocean.
  • The exact location of your stateroom could be anywhere within the category you selected. It could be on any deck, forward or aft, or in a central location. The assignment is determined based on availability and at the discretion of Disney Cruise Line.
  • Disney Cruise Line will not entertain specific requests for stateroom location or adjacent staterooms when you book a Stateroom GTY. This is because the cruise line assigns rooms based on availability and occupancy optimization.
  • It’s important to note that there is a possibility of receiving a room upgrade when you book a Stateroom GTY. While not guaranteed, it can happen if there are cancellations or changes to the original bookings. However, it’s essential to have realistic expectations and not count on an upgrade as part of the Stateroom GTY experience.

Overall, Stateroom GTY offers a sense of anticipation and surprise, as you won’t know the exact location and details of your stateroom until just before your cruise. It’s a unique way to add a bit of adventure to your vacation while enjoying the same amenities and services offered to all guests onboard.

Pros and Cons of opting for Stateroom GTY

Choosing a Stateroom GTY on a Disney Cruise has its advantages and disadvantages. Let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons:

  • Potential cost savings: Booking a Stateroom GTY often comes with a lower price tag compared to selecting a specific stateroom. This can be appealing for budget-conscious cruisers looking to save some money while still enjoying a fantastic cruise experience.
  • Surprise and adventure: Not knowing the exact location of your stateroom until close to your sailing date can add an element of excitement and surprise to your vacation. It can be thrilling to discover your accommodations onboard and explore the ship from a different perspective.
  • Optimal use of ship occupancy: Stateroom GTY allows the cruise line to optimize the ship’s occupancy by assigning rooms based on availability. This can be beneficial for guests who prioritize a lower cost or are flexible with their stateroom preferences.
  • Lack of control over location: Opting for Stateroom GTY means surrendering the ability to choose the exact location and deck of your stateroom. This may not be ideal for guests who prefer a specific area of the ship or have preferences for being close to certain amenities.
  • Potential for undesirable room placement: While Disney Cruise Line aims to provide comfortable accommodations, there is a possibility of being assigned a stateroom in a less desirable location, such as near high-traffic areas or noisy sections of the ship. However, keep in mind that undesirable placements are relatively rare.
  • Inability to request specific room features: When choosing a Stateroom GTY, you cannot request specific features or amenities, such as an adjoining room or a specific bed configuration. The cruise line assigns rooms based on availability and their discretion, which may not always align with your preferences.

Ultimately, the decision to opt for a Stateroom GTY comes down to personal preferences and priorities. If you’re seeking cost savings and an element of surprise, and you’re flexible with room location, a Stateroom GTY might be an excellent choice. However, if having control over your stateroom’s exact location and features is essential to you, it’s advisable to book a specific stateroom category instead.

Is Stateroom GTY the right choice for you?

Deciding whether Stateroom GTY is the right choice for your Disney Cruise experience depends on your personal preferences and priorities. Consider the following factors to determine if it aligns with your needs:

Flexibility:

Opting for Stateroom GTY requires a certain level of flexibility. If you are open to being surprised by your stateroom assignment and are not particular about the exact location or features of your accommodations, then Stateroom GTY can be a great fit. It adds an element of adventure and excitement to your cruise.

For those looking to save some money on their cruise, Stateroom GTY can be an attractive option. It often comes with a lower price tag compared to selecting a specific stateroom category, allowing you to allocate your budget towards other aspects of your vacation.

Room location:

If having control over the exact location of your stateroom is important to you, then Stateroom GTY may not be the ideal choice. Keep in mind that while the cruise line aims to provide comfortable accommodations, you won’t have the ability to request specific deck placements or proximity to specific amenities. If being in a certain part of the ship is crucial, booking a specific stateroom category would better suit your needs.

Adventure and surprise:

If the excitement of not knowing your stateroom assignment until close to your sailing date appeals to you, Stateroom GTY can offer a sense of adventure. Exploring the ship from a different perspective and discovering your accommodations onboard can add a unique touch to your cruise experience.

Ultimately, the decision to choose a Stateroom GTY or not depends on your individual preferences and priorities for your Disney Cruise. If you value flexibility, potential cost savings, and the thrill of surprise, then Stateroom GTY could be the right choice for you. However, if having control over the exact location of your stateroom and specific room features is essential, you may prefer to book a specific stateroom category instead.

Opting for a Stateroom GTY on a Disney Cruise can be an exciting and cost-effective choice for those seeking a touch of adventure and surprise in their vacation. By relinquishing control over the exact location and features of your stateroom, you open yourself up to the possibility of enjoying potential cost savings and the joy of discovering your accommodations onboard.

While there are pros and cons to consider, such as the lack of control over room placement and the potential for undesirable locations, Stateroom GTY can be a fantastic option for cruisers who prioritize flexibility and are open to unexpected experiences. The potential for room upgrades further adds to the allure, although it is important not to count on them as guaranteed.

Before deciding on a Stateroom GTY, it is essential to reflect on your priorities and preferences. If having control over your stateroom’s location and specific features is crucial to you, booking a specific stateroom category may be a better fit. However, if you are willing to embrace surprise, enjoy potential cost savings, and have an adventurous spirit, then Stateroom GTY can be a thrilling choice for your Disney Cruise.

Remember, it’s always advisable to check with the cruise line or consult with a travel agent to gather the most up-to-date information and determine the availability of Stateroom GTY for your desired sailing date. With careful consideration, you can make the right choice that aligns with your vacation goals and ensures a memorable and enjoyable Disney Cruise experience.

The Guarantee Gamble: The Odds of an Upgrade When the Cruise Line Picks Your Cabin (Photo: Norwegian Cruise Line)

The Guarantee Gamble: The Odds of an Upgrade When the Cruise Line Picks Your Cabin

disney cruise room assignment

Travelers who book a cruise cabin guarantee face two big questions: Do you really save enough money to make the suspense worth it? And, what are your chances for an upgrade?

While those who book their cruise in a more traditional manner instantly receive a cabin assignment, folks who book a cruise guarantee cabin are only promised a stateroom somewhere on the ship, in the same category they've chosen. There’s also the possibility of an upgrade. The actual cabin will not be assigned until after booking (often a few weeks or days before departure).

The real risk is giving up the chance to pick your spot -- midship, high deck, low deck, etc. If you don't get that upgrade (and even if you do), you might end up with the oddball cabin no one wants because it's a strange shape, under a noisy deck or a long trek from the elevator.

Guarantees remain a mystery to many cruisers because there is no standard method of dealing with them: Each line has its own unique policy that we'll outline below, including how long you need to wait before you get that cabin assignment. But first, we'll address the most burning questions we hear about booking guarantee cabins.

Will I Save Money?

That depends on which line you choose. In some cases, even if you don't get an upgrade, you can still save a few bucks. Royal Caribbean and Seabourn are among those that sell guarantee cabins at slightly lower fares.

In other cases, there's no real savings: Crystal, Disney and Holland America are among those that permit guarantees, but the cost is the same as booking a cabin in that particular category. You only get a deal if you score that upgrade. Otherwise, you've simply gambled away your right to pick a cabin location.

Will I Get Upgraded?

Savings or no, the lure of the guarantee is the possibility of an upgrade -- and it does happen. If you book a guarantee in a certain category that is full, you might get upgraded to an empty cabin in a higher category.

On the other hand, someone else (perhaps a member of the past-passenger program with higher status) might get upgraded and you might get their cabin in your category. However, a guarantee passenger is more likely to be upgraded than someone of the same status who booked an allocated cabin at the same price.

As there's no way to predict what you'll get, the cardinal rule of booking guarantees becomes: Don't book a guarantee in any given category unless you would be happy with a cabin in that category! No matter what anyone else tells you, the cruise line is not obligated to give you a cabin in a higher category than the level you booked. When booking a guarantee, do exactly what you would do when booking an assigned cabin -- book the least expensive category that you will be happy with. An upgrade is a nice surprise but not something you should count on.

Should I Book a Guarantee?

Ultimately, the decision to go for a guarantee or not depends on your cruise preferences. If the cruise line is offering a guarantee at a lower fare than the least expensive assigned cabin and you really don't care too much about your cabin, go for it. You are, after all, guaranteed to get at least what you paid for, and you just might be lucky and get that great upgrade. And it does happen ... sometimes.

On the other hand, if you won't save any money by booking a guarantee, you'd probably do just as well by looking at a deck plan and choosing a specific cabin you know you'll be happy with. If you're very particular about location, then a guarantee definitely isn't for you. Only go for this type of guarantee if you're a risk-taker who thrives on the suspense.

For a closer look at guarantees, we asked each major cruise line to detail their own policy on guarantee cabins.

How It Works:   Azamara offers guarantee cabins if all assigned suites and staterooms are sold out in a particular category. You are guaranteed the category you have paid for and, occasionally, might get put into a higher category.

When You'll Know:  Guarantee cabins are typically assigned between two and three weeks before departure, although some are assigned the week of sailing.

Balcony Stateroom on Carnival Magic (Photo: Carnival Cruise Line)

Carnival Cruise Lines

How It Works:  Passengers can book a specific cabin type (e.g., inside, ocean view, balcony or suite), but Carnival assigns the deck and location of the stateroom at a later time.

When You'll Know:  Carnival begins assigning guaranteed cabins several weeks before departure and, in a very few cases, at the time of check in on the day of sailing.

Celebrity Cruises

How It Works:   Celebrity passengers can choose a category type (inside, outside, etc.) and pay a price lower than the regular fares for that category. They will be berthed in a cabin within the chosen category -- so no chance of a free upgrade. (Upgrades are only available when the line is running a free-upgrade promotion.)

When You'll Know:  Guarantee cabins are typically assigned about one week before departure, although some are assigned the week of sailing.

Balcony Cabin on Costa neoRomantica (Photo: Costa Cruises)

Costa Cruises

How It Works:  On select Costa sailings, guarantee passengers may either be allocated a generic cabin within the type they paid or offered a higher category cabin for the same price.

When You'll Know:  Generally, passengers will learn their cabin number about 20 days prior to sailing, but sometimes the line lets them know just a few days before departure or even on the day of sailing.

Outside Stateroom Cabin on Queen Victoria (Photo: Cunard Line)

Cunard Line

How It Works:  With a Cunard guarantee, you are assured a cabin in the category you booked or better. However, free upgrades are possible only within the room type booked. (For example, if you book an outside cabin guarantee, you might get a better outside cabin but you won't get upgraded to a balcony.)

When You'll Know:  Cabin assignments may be made anywhere from 150 to one day before departure.

Disney Cruise Line

How It Works:   Disney Cruise Line offers guarantees in any given category at the normal fare for that category, depending on availability. Passengers are eligible to get upgraded at no additional charge, but upgrades are rare.

When You'll Know:  Cabin assignments generally take place within 30 days of departure, but timing can vary.

The Oceanview Cabin on Koningsdam (Photo: Cruise Critic)

Holland America Line

How It Works:   Holland America guarantees are offered in specific cabin categories, depending on availability, at the normal fare for that category. Passengers who book these cabins might snag a free upgrade if they're lucky.

When You'll Know:  Assignments are made between 30 days and one week before sailing.

MSC Cruises

How It Works:   MSC Cruises offers guarantee cabins -- typically only available for double-occupancy cabins -- selectively based on inventory. Passengers who book a guarantee cabin are eligible for a free upgrade if available.

When You'll Know:  The time frame for assignment of guarantees can vary according to the sailing, category and type of guarantee. In general, guarantees are assigned within two to three weeks of sailing and in some instances may not be assigned until embarkation.

Balcony Stateroom on Norwegian Bliss (Photo: Norwegian Cruise Line)

Norwegian Cruise Line

How It Works:   Norwegian 's guarantees are offered for a stateroom in the category the passenger initially paid for, or possibly a higher category at no extra cost. Guarantee cabins are not available for back-to-back reservations.

When You'll Know:  Assignments are made any time after final payment has been received, up to the day of sailing.

Oceania Cruises

How It Works:  Guarantee cabins are offered within specific categories at the prevailing rate, once all available cabins in that category have been assigned.

When You'll Know:   Oceania Cruises' cabin assignments are made within 45 days of sailing.

Balcony Stateroom on Pacific Princess (Photo: Princess Cruises)

Princess Cruises

How It Works:  Depending on availability, Princess Cruises offers guarantees within specific categories as an alternative to an assigned cabin, and you will be assigned a room in that category or better.

When You'll Know:  Cabin assignments will be made at any time between booking and day of departure.

Regent Seven Seas

How It Works:  If a cabin category is sold out, RSSC is usually able to offer guarantee cabins for that category. Passengers who book guarantee cabins may get free upgrades if they are available.

When You'll Know:  Cabin assignments are usually made from one week up to the day of departure.

Ocean View Stateroom on Harmony of the Seas (Photo: Royal Caribbean International)

Royal Caribbean

How It Works:   Royal Caribbean offers guarantee cabins, based on availability. Prices are typically lower than the rates for assigned cabins within the same category. Free upgrades are not available.

When You'll Know: Cabin assignments are made anywhere from 30 to five days before sailing.

Seabourn Cruise Line

How It Works:   Seabourn occasionally offers guarantee fares as a special promotion on select departures. They are typically offered as a "run of ship" guarantee at a flat fare for ocean view and veranda suite categories (not the larger suite categories).

When You'll Know:  Guarantees can be done at any time up to two weeks before departure.

The Vista Suite on Silver Muse (Photo: Cruise Critic)

Silversea Cruises

How It Works : Silversea Cruises offers guarantees if all assigned suites are sold out in a particular category. This is, like many other lines' guarantee programs, a waitlist for a possible free cabin upgrade. You might get upgraded or you might not, but you will get at least the category you booked.

When You'll Know:  A suite may be assigned at any time before departure.

Windstar Cruises

How It Works:   Windstar offers guarantee cabins if all assigned suites and staterooms are sold out in a particular category. If a room open ups in a higher category than the one you've guaranteed, you could get a complimentary upgrade.

When You'll Know:  Cabin assignments are made on the day of sailing.

BAH! I got a solid white wall verandah! Poo! I didnt really want that, but oh well. The CSR on the phone said there was no switching to be done at this time, however I guess I could keep trying, he said it doesnt hurt to try. Oh well. Still waiting to hear on switching my dining to first seating. W

Replying to myself, if anyone has any information on rm 8598 (Cat 4 Deck 8, Disney Wonder) Id appreciate it. Its not in the database of room reports on the disboards site. If anyone has stayed in a solid wall verandah room, Id love to know how it was.

http://www.wdwinfo.com/wdwinfo/cruise-new/roomlist/cfm

they have all the cabins and reviews-big help!

We also just got our assignment and it is ok but not thrilled. We had a guarantee and were hoping for an upgrade, but they say they are fully booked. Will still try though!

Hope the link helps!

Thanks for the link, they didnt have a review of my room on the Wonder, HOWEVER, the Magic is the exact same ship and they had reviews on there. Most said it was a nice room, very quiet etc, but the balcony! OY...I just couldnt get past it. This was my horny dilemma today. Stay with my Cat 4 solid white wall verandah room (which, truth be told I HATED) or downgrade to a Cat 5 in which they had rooms available with the regular see thru verandah. The Cat 4 room is 304 sq feet. The cat 5 room is 268 sq ft. The difference is a little space between the foot of the sofa bed and the verandah door, in which there is a small chair, a steamer trunk thing and another pull down murphy bed (the Cat 4 sleeps 5, the Cat 5 sleeps 4). Well we dont HAVE to sleep five, we are only four of us. Plus, just somethign about looking out and seeing that solid metal wall? UGH. The Cat 5 room was further forward, the Cat 4 room was LITERALLY the last room on the SB side of the ship, literally the butt end of the boat. Googling around found some pics of a solid white wall verandah room and man did I hate it even more once I saw it! Ive had visions of sitting on that balcony, sipping coffee, catching a breeze. Now with the solid white wall that my kids are not tall enough to see over, I feel like I had gotten a little rooked. For two hundred bucks LESS than what I was paying, I could get the cabin I really wanted, only losing a small amount of cabin space, which for me, was negligible. I know that in 2011 Disney is reclassifying categories and rooms with the solid wall verandah will cost less. Well, that makes sense, its only fair, obstructed view should be less. But for now? I was STUCK. I hate that. I called and got the COOLEST rep at DCL and switched it over. They refunded the difference of 200 bucks back onto my card and I now have the exact room I want. My lesson for the day is NEVER NEVER NEVER book GTY. Pick your room. I was too dumb to know that when I booked, I just took what they had. Now that I know how to go on the Disney site and see which rooms are available, thats the way to go.;)

Glad that you got the answer....and the cabin!!!!.... that you were looking for. I stumbled apon that link and found it SO helpful, will be sure to use it in the future!

Enjoy your cruise, especially sitting out on your dream balcony , wind in your hair, sipping your coffee, and being able to see the scenery!!!!

I would hate having that solid veranda, too. I've seen pictures. UGH! I'm surprised that they sold these as the same price as the see-tru balconies.

Glad you got the room you wanted.

TravelSmarty

I am glad that you got the room that wanted and be thankful for that!..Maybe your wish granted!.....

Disney Cruise Line's rotational dining: What to know about this unique dinner concept

Ashley Kosciolek

Much like Captain Hook, Jafar and Ursula, Disney Cruise Line 's rotational dining is iconic to some but plain evil to others.

When you cruise with Disney, rotational dining dictates how you and your cruise companions dine each night in your ship's main restaurants. On the one hand, it's a rigid schedule that takes the ability to choose away from travelers, which some cruisers don't like. On the other hand, knowing where you will eat each night makes dinnertime less chaotic and guarantees you will experience each of your ship's themed restaurants at least once.

Here's everything you need to know about Disney Cruise Line's dining system , including what rotational dining is, which ships have it and which main restaurants are included on each vessel.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

What is Disney Cruise Line's rotational dining?

disney cruise room assignment

Rotational dining is Disney Cruise Line's unique dinner concept. You and your travel party are assigned to dine in one of three complimentary onboard restaurants at a set time each night of your sailing. You'll sit with your group at an assigned table and with assigned waiters.

You'll dine at each of the three restaurants at least once on short sailings and at least twice on weeklong voyages, according to a schedule given to you on board. Your table number will remain the same, and your waiters will travel with you. On voyages longer than three nights, you'll visit some of the restaurants more than once, possibly with a different menu for pirate night or the welcome aboard dinner. Cruisers can't choose which venues they visit an extra time.

Each dining room has a different menu, so the rotation ensures you can dine at each of your ship's main dining rooms at least once.

Each dining room also has a different theme, which might tie into Disney animation, a garden at sunset, characters from the movie "Frozen" or Marvel immersion. Sometimes, the restaurant will include a show or mealtime entertainment. Different ships have differently themed rotational dining restaurants.

Which Disney ships have rotational dining?

disney cruise room assignment

Rotational dining is on all ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet:

  • Disney Dream
  • Disney Fantasy
  • Disney Magic
  • Disney Treasure
  • Disney Wish
  • Disney Wonder

Disney Dream rotational dining

The three main restaurants that cater to rotational dining on Disney Dream are Animator's Palate, which allows passengers to have conversations with animations of Crush (the turtle from "Finding Nemo") via giant screens along the walls; Enchanted Garden, which feels like you're dining in a garden as the sun slowly sets; and Royal Palace, featuring paintings of Disney Princesses and a French-influenced menu.

Disney Wish rotational dining

On Disney Wish, passengers will rotate among Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure , which features a Norwegian-forward menu in celebration of Anna's engagement to Kristoff; Worlds of Marvel , where Ant-Man accidentally shrinks the ship and then tries to fix it; and 1923, a less interactive and more elegant restaurant with an art deco motif that's inspired by the golden age of animation.

Disney Magic rotational dining

Passengers on Disney Magic will rotate between Rapunzel's Royal Table, which celebrates Rapunzel's birthday with singing, dancing and visits from characters, and Lumiere's, a rather nondescript dining room with a loose but hardly noticeable "Beauty and the Beast" theme. The ship also has Animator's Palate, but it differs from Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy because, instead of conversations with Crush, it features decor and waiter uniforms that are black and white but gradually turn colorful throughout the meal.

Disney Fantasy rotational dining

Like Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy also has Animator's Palate and Enchanted Garden, as well as Royal Court, which is the same as Royal Palace with the exception of the name.

Disney Wonder rotational dining

On Disney Wonder, cruisers will move between Tiana's Place, a New Orleans-themed eatery that draws from "The Princess and the Frog"; Triton's, which is loosely based on "The Little Mermaid" and the most formal of the restaurants; and a version of Animator's Palate similar to the one on Disney Magic.

Disney Treasure rotational dining

Disney Treasure will introduce new rotational dining restaurants and dinner shows, and its weeklong cruises will allow guests to dine at each twice. Plaza de Coco features "dinner in the round" with performances by characters from the movie "Coco," and Worlds of Marvel will return with new and updated shows. Also returning from Disney Wish is 1923, with slightly different decor.

Is rotational dining optional?

disney cruise room assignment

Disney Cruise Line's buffet is not open for dinner on most sailings, and its ships don't have main dining rooms that cater to travelers who prefer flexible dining times. If you want a complimentary sit-down restaurant meal, you need to follow the rotational dining schedule.

If you choose not to eat in the main dining rooms as part of rotational dining, you can opt for room service or choose to pay extra for an alternative restaurant, such as Palo , Remy or Enchante . However, the extra-fee restaurants are adults-only and do not accept diners younger than 18. If you're traveling with children, alternatives to rotational dining are extremely limited.

Pros and cons of rotational dining

Disney Cruise Line's rotational dining guarantees every passenger is able to eat in every venue at least once, so they won't miss any of the included dinner shows or experiences. It also helps to better stagger the number of passengers trying to see the line's phenomenal theater shows either before or after the two set dining times.

Additionally, it provides structure to mealtimes and allows waiters, who follow passengers from restaurant to restaurant, to learn passenger preferences, thereby offering a more elevated level of service.

With rotational dining, you and your travel companions have to eat at whichever time and restaurant Disney assigns you. That can be frustrating for passengers who prefer to eat earlier or later than the time they're assigned or who just want a relaxed experience following a busy day in port.

Another downside is that the menus tend to be themed (French at Royal Palace and Royal Court, Norwegian at Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure, Cajun at Tiana's Place and so forth). If you're not a fan of the type of cuisine served and wish to skip a meal in a main restaurant, you're limited to whatever happens to still be available on the pool deck (hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza and the like) when you're hungry for dinner.

If you're traveling with children, rotational dining can be either a blessing or a curse. If your kids are able to tolerate sit-down meals and enjoy the entertainment, it works well. If they're bored with a multicourse, sit-down meal, you might find yourself frustrated that Disney Cruise Line offers so few grab-and-go alternatives.

Bottom line

On a Disney Cruise, rotational dining at an assigned time is the only option if you'd like to eat in one of the main dining rooms and not be stuck with room service or pricey alternative dining that doesn't allow children.

Although the concept is somewhat inflexible, it's efficient, allows passengers to try all the restaurants (and see all the dinner shows) and ensures service continuity since cruisers have the same waiters as they move from venue to venue each night. The schedule also guarantees all cruisers can find seats in the theater for each night's show, which has two performances at two different times. (Those who are assigned to eat late go to the early show and vice versa.)

Whether you love it or hate it, rotational dining is a unique way to experience dinner on a Disney cruise.

Can I change my assigned room after booking?

Earning My Ears

  • May 20, 2017

Hi there - I booked our first cruise the other day for November 2018.... and already I think I want to change our room .... I didn't realize that we would be right above lifeboats on deck 6 and although it's not a huge deal - if it's only a few dollars more I think I would rather not see them .... plus we are on the side of the ship that doesn't look at Castaway Cay - which is also not a huge deal but since we are early in the process and I now know these things I think I would like to switch..... is that hard to do once a reservation is booked with a travel agent ? I emailed my TA to check but thought I would ask you experts too....

Of course. As long as the room is available, you can change. If it's the same category, no problem. If it's different, your price will be adjusted.

Thanks! I will see if she responds soon

Yes, if it's the same or lower priced category and available, your TA can do it for you. If you booked directly yourself, you could do it on line. But sounds like you used a TA. I've done it several times, no biggie. I look on the DCL website and if I see something i like better, she'll change it for me, same day usually ( we have a great TA).

It may be helpful to look at your sailing on the Disney site and get an idea of which room you're thinking of. Check out the DIS stateroom reviews too. That may help.

Just as a note, I know there are some cruise lines where people book GTY and then when they see their assignment and aren't happy with it, they call and whine and get a different one. By and large, with Disney once a GTY or *GT is assigned, that is your cabin - I think I have only heard of MAYBE one case where someone called and whined that they didn't understand that was what they might get and got changed. You could always PAY to change to a different category cabin in that case, but calling to complain about a GTY or *GT assignment with Disney pretty much isn't going to do any good. I realize the OP has just booked, and from the post it does not seem like it was a GTY cabin. But just putting this out there as I've seen some people surprised that they couldn't call up and change a GTY or *GT cabin assignment as on other lines.

Thanks for all the responses! I was able to change our cabin today and just paid the difference on the class (went from a 4D to a 4C)

I'm switching to the castaway side (if backing in) this cruise! I did like the other side, so let's see how it feels to be on the beach side! However - I've never seen the ship pull forward and thought that was only in case of bad weather.

  1. Disney Cruise Stateroom Guarantee

A cruise ship is not like a hotel where you book a type of room and it is assigned when you check-in. Usually, you will book a specific stateroom so you will know exactly where you will be on the ship. However, sometimes Disney will offer Guaranteed Staterooms for select sailings. This doesn't happen on all Disney sailings.

  2. When should I expect to get our cabin number on a GTY room?

My experience has been varied - for some cruises, I got my stateroom assignment 45 days in advance, and, for another sailing, I found out which room I was in when I arrived in port! Keep checking the My Reservations tab of the Disney Cruise Line website or the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App to see whether your room has been assigned.

With a guarantee room assignment (or a GTY room category), you can get your stateroom assignment anywhere from 45 days in advance up to the time you arrive at the port for your cruise. 7. What Does GTY Mean On Disney Cruise Line

A GTY booking is a guaranteed stateroom booking on Disney Cruise Line where you select the stateroom category but leave the specific room assignment to Disney Cruise Line. The room is guaranteed to be at least within the category you chose or possibly an upgrade to a higher category if available.

  8. Does someone know how GTY staterooms work?

Shmoo here said: Once a certain percentage of rooms within a specific category are booked, the category goes GTY (guarantee). You can still select the category, but you cannot select a specific room. DCL will assign a room of AT LEAST the category you've booked or better at a later date. Most GTY bookings get the category room they've booked.
