South Delta Garden Tour returns

web1_south-delta-garden-tour

After a three-year hiatus, the South Delta Garden Club is re-introducing an event that drew 500 Lower Mainlanders to South Delta in each of 2017 and 2019.

“When we broached the idea with people, we realized there was some pent-up demand for a garden tour and quite a bit of excitement at the idea of having another one,” stated Garden Tour Committee Chair, Susan Lilholt.

This year’s tour features two gardens with different Asian influences, one that invites meditation, and a yard whose co-owner learned techniques from working in Queen Elizabeth Park earlier in life. Three of the gardens are owned by resident artists and one by a forester.

Visitors will find unexpected ideas with plants grown in shade and other beds filled with sunny colour. One garden has a quiet palette and multiple leaf textures creating a tranquil oasis.

Still, another is grown as a cutting garden with creative ways to keep tall flowers upright and to capture water. The careful observer will spot unusual and artistic containers on display and ways to use vertical space.

The South Delta Garden Tour is a self-guided journey, which means people drive themselves to each Ladner or Tsawwassen location (or cycle, if they are up to it) using the maps on the ticket.

The 2023 Tour features 10 private and distinct gardens plus one public garden, which will offer special tour-day guided tours. The tour gives people an opportunity to see horticultural spaces they would otherwise be unable to view.

The Tour is planned for Sunday, June 25. Tickets are available for cash payment only from six nurseries and retailers in Delta, Richmond and Surrey: Harris Nurseryland, Phoenix Perennials, Sunnyside Nurseries, Vandula Farms, West Coast Gardens, and West Coast Seeds.

Advance tickets are $30 and tour-day tickets, if available, are $40 from one location, Harris Nurseryland.

Everyone is welcome, including children 12 and older; however, due to uneven ground, the tour is not wheel-chair accessible or stroller-friendly. Pets are prohibited.

Parking at Opryland Hotel when you don’t have a reservation

Opryland hotel parking is $35 for a visit.  That’s a hefty price to walk around the free gardens.  I recommend parking your car FOR FREE at Opry Mills Mall shopping center near the movie complex and walking a short distance to the hotel entrance. The lot was so empty when we visited!  We were able to easily park our large motorhome near the walkway to the Opryland hotel.

Side note:  After you are done taking photos at Opryland Resort Gardens, walk over to Opry Mills Mall and get some shopping done!  There are a lot of good stores that will satisfy the shopaholic.

Opry Mills Interior-Opryland

After parking for free at Opry Mills Mall, walk between the white fence and follow the signs toward the Gaylord Opryland Events Center, continuing past the Center and under the green awning. Following this walkway will lead you to the Delta entrance to the Opryland Hotel Resort Gardens!

Now you can go inside to enjoy this unique Nashville garden hotel!

Can you walk around Opryland Hotel?

Yes, you can, but I recommend looking at a map . We got lost a couple of times.  …and since we also didn’t stay together we ended up wandering off in different directions.  After all, Gaylord Opryland is the largest non-gaming hotel in the continental US !! Use the handy map to plan your time at Gaylord Opryland Botanical Gardens. It’s bigger than you think! Think “Las Vegas resort” size!

Use this map for the Gaylord Opryland map to navigate around the different sections of the garden displays.

It is worth it to plan a route through this very large garden conservatory so that you don’t miss anything.

They have maps posted at most of the entrances. Yes, you will need it!  I sometimes felt like I was walking around a jungle on the winding paths.

Areas to visit inside Opryland Hotel

Delta is the first and largest area that you will come to if you walk from the Opry Mills Mall parking lot.  The other areas are Cascades, Magnolia, and the Garden Conservatory.  Perhaps you should even visit the main lobby of this grand hotel!

Opryland_Hotel_Atrium

Delta Area of Opryland Resort Gardens

If you follow my advice and walk from the Opry Mills Mall parking lot, you will end up in the Delta area first.  This is the largest of the indoor gardens and houses many different attractions like the Delta River, the Fountain with water shows, and the Riverboat for your cruising enjoyment.  Plan to spend most of your time in Delta, but don’t forget to see the other sections of the Opryland Resort Gardens because there is still half of the hotel yet to discover!

Opryland Garden Resort Waterfall

Main Island in the Delta Area

If you are hungry, there are plenty of counter service and snack shop places to eat.  If you are eager for souvenirs, there are plenty of little shops.  The main island is like a mini-city that you can walk around and admire.

Opryland Delta Main Island

Want an even better idea?  When you are visiting Opryland Hotel, grab some sandwiches and have a picnic in this fabulous natural setting.  There are plenty of tables near the foliage to gather around and munch on your goodies.

Delta River in Opryland Resort Gardens

Delta River in Opryland Resort Gardens

You will notice a scenic quarter–mile long winding river gently flowing through the Delta area.  Somehow this river was made from 1,700 water samples from rivers around the world, including every single river in the USA!

The list of donating rivers is quite long and there are many plaques lining the river bank to document the donors.

Delta Riverboat Cruise

As a highlight on the Delta River, believe-it-or-not, they actually have a Southern-style flatbed river boat taking guests on tours through the Delta area.  The tours are priced at $11 for adults and last about 15 minutes with the riverboat guides sharing their knowledge about the plants and animal life spread throughout the Delta riverbanks in the Opryland resort.

Opryland Resort Gardens Riverboat

If you are touring Opryland Resort Gardens as a happy couple, you can opt for the Romantic Cruise around the Delta Atrium.  This $65 option gives you two trips around the river for 2 people with music and romance.  Reservations are required for this special cruise.

Atrium Glass Ceiling

The Atrium roof is a beautiful architectural wonder that is displayed above your head, stretching across the wide expanse of the Delta area as glowing glass that allows the sun to spread its rays upon all its green recipients below.  According to guides, the glass also provides a safe haven during storms since it is incredibly durable and indestructible!

Opryland Fountains in Delta Area

The Opryland water fountains operate all day so you can sit and enjoy the water as it changes to different heights and angles while you sit among the garden scenery

Opryland Resort Gardens - Water Fountain in Delta

However, the spectacle is at night when the music and light shows are displayed at the fountain. There is a show each hour that is a choreographed display of water and lights which is set to music. Can you imagine having one of those Opryland hotel rooms with a view of the fountain?

Where to stand for the Opryland Water Fountain Show

First of all, watch out for the railing.  Don’t ruin your melodic water video by having that big railing in the middle of your picture.  Perhaps find a spot where you can stand slightly further back because the fountain sprays the water high into the air and you don’t want to have to keep panning up and down to get it all in your video frame.

Opryland Fountain Show Times

The Opryland Fountain Water Shows are every hour from 6 pm – 10 pm at the Delta Foundtain.  The shows alternate but there really isn’t an official list of Opryland Fountain Shows.  However, if you see the one at 7pm and you are still there at 8pm, you can see a new show that is just as entertaining.  There is also a special Christmas-themed show during the holidays.

Other fun happenings in the Delta Area at Opryland Resort Gardens

The Falls Bar has live music on weekend afternoons so that you can sit and relax with your mimosa while surrounded by beautiful gardens.

There are also Animal Encounters in the afternoon on Fridays and Saturdays.  Staff provide an educational opportunity to interact with and learn about the inhabitants of the garden conservatory

The Learning Log is another educational opportunity for the little ones to crawl in to see the exhibits.  My little ones that aren’t so little still enjoyed peeking into the log!

Other areas to visit on a day trip to Opryland Resort Gardens in Nashville

After you have completely walked through the Delta Area—and that should take you an hour or two—there are still other areas in the Opryland Resort Gardens that you can check out.

Magnolia Area in Opryland Resort Gardens

The Magnolia Area is home to several restaurants as well as the Opryland Water Park, Soundwaves .  The big photo spot for Magnolia is the grand white staircase.

Another important note for the Magnolia area is the location of a good set of restrooms in the hallway at the top of the staircase.  Since we spent several hours walking through the gardens and looking at fountains, this was definitely a necessary stop.

Opryland Resort Gardens - water fountain and pond

Opryland Hotel Water Park

This mega hotel even has its own water park, Nashville’s only resort water experience!  There are exhilarating slides that pump out music as you hurl to the bottom, as well as a lazy river –for those that want a little more relaxation.

SoundWaves is reserved only for hotel guests.  Normally day passes are not available unless you are a guest at a party that was booked at Soundwaves.

The water park looks like a lot of fun with lots of water attractions.  The whole SoundWaves Experience package includes a hotel room, wristband for daily admission to SoundWaves, and baggage storage for early arrivals.

Garden Conservatory at Gaylord Opryland Resort Gardens

The Garden Conservatory Area is home to many more beautiful gardens as well as a flower-covered gazebo.  We were there when it wasn’t in full bloom, but it was still photo-worthy.  My titan hubby decided to strike a godly pose under the gazebo!

Opryland Resort Gardens - titan in the Gazebo

The paths wander and wind through more greenery and take you past several sit-down fancy restaurants that will serve you al fresco style and validate your parking if you didn’t opt for the Opry Mills lot.

The Cascade area is nearest to the lobby.  In this area, you can find more greenery, more water fountains, fish in ponds, and waterfalls.

Nothing Can Keep Megan Thee Stallion Down

garden tour delta

On Tuesday, thousands of fans in cowboy hats, short skirts, booty shorts, and mesh streamed into Madison Square Garden to celebrate the arrival of Megan Thee Stallion , in town for her inaugural headlining tour. Burning embers emblazoned across a triptych of screens as the rapper emerged to the opening notes of her latest chart-topping hit, “Hiss,” her statuesque silhouette illuminated by a red background. “Y’all, this is my first tour ever !” she squealed before graciously accepting a bouquet of flowers from a fan. It would be the first of several to come throughout the show, with each moment of appreciation nearly bringing her to tears.

More than an arena performance, the Hot Girl Summer Tour was a celebration of an artist’s return after years of overwhelming, destabilizing change. During her rise to stardom, which included three Grammy wins and an erotically charged megahit in “WAP,” Megan was plagued with tragedy and misfortune: She lost her mother and great-grandmother in March 2019, had a protracted fight to leave her former label after she accused it of signing her to an exploitative recording contract, and was subjected to racist, misogynist criticism from the music industry during her three-year-long legal battle with Tory Lanez. These events would overpower most stars, let alone a rising talent. But in the Garden, Megan stood tall, defying the limited expectations of the detractors who had publicly claimed that the rapper was “ not an arena artist .”

As a performer, Megan commanded the stage with an intoxicating mix of charm, excitement, and precision. For 90 minutes, she was Beyoncé, Tina Turner, and Pam Grier wrapped up in a southern emcee package. Her set list ran the full breadth of her catalogue, from early freestyles like the 2017 “Stalli Freestyle” that made her a viral sensation to crowd-pleasing hits like “Savage Remix.” “Thot Shit” showcased the starlet at her best, with Megan employing her signature double-time rhyming schemes and finding pockets to pause and join her dancers in sultry majorette-styled choreography. “Body” transitioned into an inspired dance break mixed with the instrumentals to Bey’s “Get Me Bodied.” “Cognac Queen” turned into a crowdwide sing-along, the audience chanting, “I’m on that ’Gac, I wanna dance / Come get yo’ man / Before I put him in a trance.” She transformed her new cheeky pop single “BOA” into a call-and-response exercise, the entire Garden screaming “womp womp womp womp womp whomp” while she worked through the chorus. Meg then flipped the camera onto the fans as they unleashed their own inner hot girls. A young man eagerly lifted his shirt up to show off his undulating waist, a girl showcased her own Megan’s knees while holding onto a railing, and fellow hot girls danced in anime cosplay and posed for photos. In the waning moments of “Cobra,” someone in my section proclaimed, “She’s a star! A star!”

Later, Meg asked, “Y’all ready to cut the fuck up?” before revealing her big surprise for the night: New York native Cardi B, who emerged to a deafening reception, waving and grinning from ear to ear. The crowd was so loud that the Bronx rapper struggled to properly hear their 2023 collab “Bongos,” but she was able to play off her natural chemistry with Megan before transitioning into a live performance of “WAP,” the audience reciting each verse word for word. Opening act GloRilla soon joined them, as Cardi rapped her standout verse on “Tomorrow 2.” “We’re having a motherfucking hot girl summer,” Megan screamed. “Turn this bitch up!” The trio of women, celebrating each other onstage, was a brief flash into what modern “fandom” should be: not breathlessly supporting one act while forsaking all other entertainers, but reveling in the success of all women in hip-hop and finding joy in continuing to collaborate with and support one another.

As the arena lights came up, the Garden filled with affirmative chatter: “She did that!” one fan said. The Texas-born rapper had put all lingering critiques about her ability to deliver a top-notch arena show to rest. But more than that, it felt as though she was actively choosing happiness in her work despite the many people who had seemed intent to rob her of it. At one point during the show, she appeared in a stained-glass cocoon, defiantly rapping the lyrics to her scornful single “Plan B” in lockstep with the audience. By the second verse, she had taken her mark at the center of the stage, forsaking the cocoon for newfound butterfly wings that had been projected behind her. For Megan, the statement was clear: She was emerging from the ashes, shedding the skin of the trauma that had encased her, and declaring an era of dominance for the rest of this Hot Girl Summer, one stage at a time.

Gardens in the community maintained by members.

January 16, 2024 : Heather Fayers, Angelika Hedley and Hilary Sanders

Two beautiful gardens are available to the public any time. The third is hidden for residences and their visitors. Where are these you ask? Come to the meeting to find out.

Members of SDGC maintain these gardens. Since they are public, they come with special challenges. These gardens have 'fairies' that pull out the plants or pick all the flowers so no one else can enjoy them. They even think they know how to prune. Members put their heads together to find solutions.

Saturday, February 3rd , members will be t reated to a private tour of each garden.

February 20 , 202 4 : Dianne Gaines

At a young age I learned the importance of gardening and began to understand that being a gardener is more than a hobby; it is a way of life.  My family encouraged my thirst for gardening by building my first greenhouse when I was still in early grade school.

In the mid 80’s my mother and I joined the Langley Garden Club. It was great to find a place where people could share their love and passion for gardening.  When it came time for university my passion for plants pushed me into a major in microbiology with a minor in botany.

Wasps! And Why We Should Care

March 19 , 202 4 :  Brian Campbell

Wasps are one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet performing many vital ecological services, pest control and pollination among them.  Most people don't like them but that is because there are many misconceptions and misunderstandings of the harmless yet beneficial role they have in human life.  Many people claim to love bees and hate wasps without realizing that bees are vegetarian wasps!  It's time we learn to embrace diversity and accept that just because we don't like something we can still respect the good they do.

Brian's love of bees has been a life long passion.  Brian is a Certified Master Gardener since 2002 and a Bee Master at SFU since 2005.  He worked at Langara College for the Sustainable Beekeeping program from 2014 to 2016.  At UBC Botanical he was the Bee-ologist in Residence.  Currently he works at West Coast Seeds and worked as seed and product expert, Quality Assurance Manager, Organic manager, trial manager, product developer for WCS and Urban Bee Supplies.  Brian is a member of the Board of Directors, Invasive Species Council of Metro Vancouver and since 2005 Brian is an Adult education instructor at VanDusen Botanical Garden .

Megan Thee Stallion

“Y’all, this is my first tour ever!” Megan Thee Stallion shouted with glee after picking up a floral bouquet thrown onto the stage by a fan. Surprisingly, after headlining and performing at numerous festivals in the years since her star began to rise in 2017, Stallion’s “Hot Girl Summer ” is her first full-scale headlining trek, and on this Tuesday night she’d sold out New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden.

Popular on Variety

The energy peaked and the crowd went batshit when a special guest walked onstage to show her support: Cardi B. The two rapped “Bongos” and their smash single “WAP,” although Cardi was more focused on dancing. Next, Stallion’s opener GloRilla, whose set earlier in the night got a visit from A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, came out joined the pair for “Wanna Be.”

“Y’all wanna hear ‘Wanna Be’ with muthafuckin Cardi B?” GloRilla shouted. “‘Wanna Be’ muthafucking remix about to drop y’all — be ready. Stay tuned!”

But just when it seemed the audience couldn’t get any rowdier, “Savage Remix” came thundering through the speakers, although Beyonce did not join in for their joint 2019 hit, which for many is filled with memories of learning TikTok dances at home to pass the time during pandemic lockdown.

She closed out “Savage” and the night, picking up another bouquet as confetti drenched the stage, blowing kisses and saying a tearful goodnight: “I love you, New York Hotties!”

King Charles and Queen Camilla Tour Chelsea Flower Show, Where Another Family Member Worked on a Display

Kate Middleton previously helped design a garden for the annual event

King Charles  and  Queen Camilla  are stopping to smell the flowers.

The King, 75, and Queen, 76, stepped out at the Royal Horticultural Society's Chelsea Flower Show in London on May 20. They were joined by other members of the royal family: Queen Elizabeth 's first cousins the Duke of Gloucester (with his wife, the Duchess of Gloucester) and Prince Michael of Kent (with his wife, Princess Michael).

The group was greeted by Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) President Keith Weed before touring the gardens and viewing the displays, including the "No Adults Allowed Garden," the first display at the show "designed by children for children" by students from Sulivan Primary School.

During the visit, Queen Camilla posed with an unlikely pair: wicker statues of her dogs, Bluebell and Beth! The Jack Russell Terriers, both rescue animals from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home , have accompanied her on royal outings, appeared in official portraits and even got a nod on Queen Camilla's coronation gown , which featured two embroidered gold dogs near the trim of her dress.

The royal also revealed that she's seen Bridgerton .

"I watched the first lot," she said during the outing, according to royal reporter Rebecca English .

In a special touch to this year's visit, it was announced earlier this month that King Charles, a keen gardener himself, was the new patron of the Royal Horticultural Society.

King Charles recently returned a fuller schedule of royal duties , including public outings, amid his cancer treatment . The monarch quipped during a May 9 outing to the Royal School of Military Engineering that he was glad to be "out of my cage."

The Chelsea Flower Show is the start of the summer season of festivities in and around London. Members of the royal family are regular visitors to the annual Chelsea Flower Show, which was established in 1913 and has become one of the world's greatest showcases for horticultural excellence.

This year, Lady Amelia Windsor contributed to her first-ever display at the Chelsea Flower Show.

The granddaughter of the Duke of Kent and second cousin once removed of King Charles, who is currently 43rd in the line of succession to the throne, teamed up with Kent Wildflower Seeds for the garden, which she visited on May 20 sporting a gingham dress and white sneakers.

Kate Middleton , who is currently staying out of the public eye as she undergoes cancer treatment, is also a fan of the event. In 2019, she helped design a "Back to Nature" garden that highlighted the benefits of outdoor play — and her family approved! During a visit with Prince William and their three children —  Prince George ,  Princess Charlotte and  Prince Louis — the kids had a blast hopping on a rope swing, dipping their toes in a creek and exploring a treehouse.

"In recent years I have focused much of my work on the early years, and how instrumental they are for outcomes later in life," she said in a statement at the time. "I believe that spending time outdoors when we are young can play a role in laying the foundations for children to become happy, healthy adults."

Queen Elizabeth, who died in 2022, also visited her granddaughter-in-law's garden .

"It’s very tidy," the history-making monarch commented.

A Boogie wit da Hoodie

Trending on billboard.

With an army of dancers in tow, they looked to match Glo’s bulldog energy with hard stomps and twerks strong enough to reverberate through the stage set. Glo dug deep into her catalog and performed songs such as “Bop,” “All Dere,” and “In My Mode.” She even had time to joke with the crowd while dealing with a minor wardrobe malfunction. “I’m not gonna try to cause an earthquake with all this ass,” she quipped.

Before steamrolling through her Hot 100 hits “Tomorrow” and “Yeah Glo,” Glo brought out A Boogie, who she said was initially set to perform three songs but was left to only do one because of his tardiness. Despite the lateness, fans cheered Boogie, who dove deep in his bag to perform his 2017 track “Jungle.” Quickly after, Boogie passed the baton back to Glo, who revved up the energy level when she dived into “FNF (Let’s Go).” Glo relished the NYC atmosphere with a toothy grin as fans standing at the edge of the staircase used the rail to support their twerking theatrics.

Megan also had brilliant spots during certain songs. When she performed “Gift And a Curse,” she reiterated her stance on abortion laws, rapping, “My mother–king body, my choice,” with her fist in the air. The three-act set hosted many nostalgic moments for day-one fans as Meg revisited songs including “Big Ol Freak,” “Girls in the Hood,” and more. She even quizzed fans by rapping a capella to see if they could rap alongside her. Later, she placed a pseudo-Instagram Live filter on the big screen to gauge who had the best twerking moves, regardless of gender.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Elliott Wilson (@elliottwilson)

The show reached its apex when Megan brought out Bronx native Cardi B to perform “Bongos” and their 2020 Hot 100 chart-topper “WAP.” The crowd roared as the chemistry between Meg and Cardi was undeniable. Despite Cardi struggling to catch the beat due to sound delays, the crowd didn’t care, as they enjoyed watching two rap superstars in their prime adore each other. The lovefest didn’t stop there. Once Cardi unleashed her classic verse from “Tomorrow 2,” GloRilla returned on stage, creating a moment between all three female MCs. The thunderous crowd marveled at the camaraderie, especially after much of the year consisted of lyrical warfare in hip-hop. It was refreshing and a much-needed moment after months of contention in the genre.

After bulldozing through the song, Cardi sat back and watched Megan and GloRilla perform “Wanna Be.” Following the performance, Glo teased a surprise, which Meg later pulled out of her: an upcoming remix of “Wanna Be” featuring Cardi. Meg thanked Cardi and Glo while acknowledging the importance of banding together as women in hip-hop before returning back to her solo mission of conquering The Garden.

After conquering The Garden as a first-time headliner, Meg’s showmanship shouldn’t be questioned. She embodies the value of playing the long game and why, sometimes, good things come to those who wait.
