Haunted Walking Tour in Downtown Panama City
PANAMA CITY, Florida (October 9 , 2019) – On October 18 & 19, Bay Arts Alliance will be hosting a Haunted Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Panama City featuring stories of murders and hauntings throughout downtown.
“Being in the Center for the Arts, right in the heart of downtown historic Panama City, we are so excited to be hosting this event. Surprisingly enough, we’ve learned things about this area that we didn’t know,” said Jayson Kretzer , Executive Director of Bay Arts Alliance.
“For instance, the unsolved murder of Joseph Mullins, and how his car was found down by the Post Office covered in blood. And The Light Room’s old life as a haunted antiques shop. Even the extent of the hauntings in the Martin Theatre is surprising. I think residents young and old will learn something new and get a kick out of the tour.”
The tour is approximately one hour long and will take visitors from the Center for the Arts past Francie’s , down to the Bay County History Museum, and back again. Visitors will learn about some downtown hauntings, old murders, past uses for familiar buildings, and historic events.
“It should be a lot of fun!” said Dixie Clough, Director of Marketing for Bay Arts Alliance. “Some of the stories will be told by our talented guides, but at many of the stops, you’ll hear from the historic figures the mselves. In fact, we need to extend a huge thank you to all the amazing local talent that will be volunteering to make these nights so spooktacular .”
Those interested in the tour can sign up in advance through the Center for the Arts website: pccenterforthearts.com/haunted-walking-tour, or via phone at 850-640-3670. There will also be limited space for walk-ins on each tour in addition to any ticketed spots that have yet to sell. Tickets are $10, and children 5 years old and under are free.
The tours will start at 6pm and leave every 15 minutes. The last tour will start at 9:30pm.
“I’ve loved teaming up with the Center for the Arts this year,” said Beverly Nield , author of the Haunted Panama City book, which the tour is based on. “We were planning to do so last year, but as with everything else, Hurricane Michael g ot in the way. This will be our third year for the tour and we hope people love it!”
“This type of event is what makes Panama City special. There is a depth to our city that embraces history and culture. I am always amazed with the creativeness that goes into telling the stories of our community. Be sure to pre-register, people know how much fun it is an it always sells out ,” said Jennifer Vigil, President of Destination Panama City.
All the proceeds will go to support Bay Arts Alliance and the Center for the Arts.

Haunted Downtown Panama City Walking Tour
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -The Bay Arts Alliance hosted the Haunted Walking Tour of Downtown Panama City Saturday. Tours started at 6 p.m. and took place every 15 minutes. The haunted trail in total was around half a mile long.
The Downtown Haunted Walking Tour is a wrap and what an amazing night it was! Thank you to all who came out and... Posted by Bay Arts on Sunday, October 24, 2021
For those taking part in the tour, they learned about the history of downtown Panama City that dates back to the pirate days.
Guides shared several ghost stories including one about the Martain Theater. According to a tour guide, there is always at least one ghost story to tell about a theater no matter what city you are in.
Another haunting tale included the Panama City For the Arts building, which used to be the county jail years ago.
“One of my favorite stories especially on this tour is about Miles Brown. Brown actually murdered someone and then got put in the Center for the Arts, which was a county jail at the time. Then some vigilantes pulled him out of the jail cell and had a little bit of southern justice,” Jayson Kretzer, Executive Director of Bay Arts Alliance, said.
All the funds that were raised from ticket sales Saturday, will to the Bay Arts Alliance. Their mission is to spread art throughout Panama City,

Ghost tours of abandoned towns in florida.
Florida may be all palms and sunshine, but the state has a spooky past too. Throughout the peninsula, you’ll find eerie tales that give you a glimpse into Florida's haunted history.
Whether you believe in ghosts or not, these Florida ghost tours promise great stories, haunting visions and howling fun. In cities like St. Augustine, Monticello, Fort Lauderdale and St. Petersburg, it’s possible to hear tales of the Sunshine State’s fascinating past.
St. Petersburg: Ghosts Find a Friend
St. Petersburg’s ghosts didn’t have an advocate until 2004, when Tim Reeser wrote the book on them. After Reeser collected a dozen tales for Ghost Stories of St. Petersburg , visitors naturally wanted a tour of the spooky spots mentioned. Ghost Tour of St. Petersburg was born.
While St. Petersburg is filled with historic buildings, the ghost stories, says Reeser, are not all old ones. One popular stop takes visitors by the Jannus Landing Courtyard. Jannus Landing is a popular St. Petersburg outdoor concert venue that many believe is haunted by a phantom from the 1980s. The story took on new life when a family came up to the group during a ghost tour and said, “We think it was our son.”
The old hotels of St. Petersburg are important stops. The tour takes in the c. 1888 Detroit Hotel. There, owners found an unidentified portrait in the attic that some believe was an old mayor. The problem? Many claim that the eyes follow them around, and guides claim that “Ladies should beware!”
The most popular hauntings are at The Renaissance Vinoy Hotel & Golf Club. The hauntings at that hotel gained new attention in 2003 when baseball player Scott Williamson told the Cincinnati Enquirer that he felt a ghost on the fifth floor. Reeser says it’s easy to understand why the Vinoy evokes the strongest reactions. “It’s got the tower, and you see the lady in white.”
Reeser, like other ghost tour leaders, carefully documents all of the stories on the walks. This makes the Florida ghost tours equally popular with history buffs who want an entertaining trip through town. But it’s still entertainment, not history. “All of the guides are trained storytellers,” says Reeser.
Monticello Ghost Tours
Monticello is a city that ghost hunters call the “South’s Most Haunted Small Town.” Today, ghost hunting with the group Big Bend Ghost Trackers is a regular Monticello event. Professional Ghost Hunters offer a 90-minute walking tour to some of the most haunted buildings in downtown Historic Monticello. One out of every three homes or businesses is presently haunted or has in the past experienced a haunting. As evening descends into darkness and the shadows of the night emerge, you will embark upon the most unusual adventure of your life on this adventure into the unknown.
St. Augustine: Ghost Central
When Jonas Brihammar came to the United States from Stockholm, Sweden in 2000, he had won a lottery to work in the United States. He happened upon St. Augustine while passing through, and fell in love with the town. Immediately, he found a position working at the St. Augustine Lighthouse. He got into telling ghost stories there, as the lighthouse is said to be haunted, and everyone from the director to the janitor had different tales to tell.
Brihammar decided to open up a ghost store in St. Augustine, and subsequently launched a Haunted Pub Tour and Haunted Hearse Ride. The hearse takes visitors to the lighthouse to check on spirits there, as well as other locations in town. The tour also lends guests an EMF (electromagnetic field) ghost-hunting meter.
The hearse tour is always popular. Guests are driven around in a 1974 Cadillac. “It’s very gothic. It’s spooky. It rolls up ‘bum-bum-bum’,” says Brihammar.
St. Augustine has become the perfect town for investigations, Brihammar says, and it officially earned a spot on the ghost map when the Sci-Fi Channel came to the lighthouse to check out ghosts in what Brihammar says was the “Mona Lisa of all the investigations.”
At first, the Swede was not a believer in ghosts, but after hearing the stories, the tales grew on him. In the end, there have been enough things that he couldn’t disprove. “You don’t have to believe in this stuff to have a good time,” says Brihammar. “[But] I have seen people turn into believers.”
Florida's Beachy Ghost Hunt
Not all the ghosts are in towns. Some of Florida’s most eerie places are actually abandoned towns, including Fort Dade on Egmont Key, near St. Petersburg .
You might feel like you’re on the surreal TV island in Lost as you follow desolate brick streets and crumbling sidewalks that lead nowhere and climb the shadowed stairways of military batteries on Egmont Key. Located near the entrance to Tampa Bay, the key is accessible only by ferry various locations and Fort De Soto Park , or by private boat, but it is well worth the trip.
Fort Dade was built on the island when the Spanish-American War was imminent. Surprisingly modern for its time and remote location, it provided its 300 residents with electricity, telephones and the luxuries of a movie theater, bowling alley and tennis court.
The fort was deactivated in 1923, but the lighthouse, built in 1858, still operates. Little more than a few walls and bricks remain of the original town’s 70 buildings; many sites are marked with placards and black-and-white photos of buildings long gone.

Fright Nights, a new haunted house experience, launches in downtown Panama City
PANAMA CITY — The Bay Arts Alliance will transform the Center for the Arts into a haunted house, promising it to be the most terrifying haunted attraction in Panama City this year.
Jayson Kretzer, executive director of Bay Arts Alliance, said this is the first haunted house downtown has seen since Hurricane Michael in 2018, and Fright Nights will become a new tradition in the community.
"We are excited to be hosting an event of this nature in the Center for the Arts, right in the heart of historic downtown Panama City," Kretzer said. "With our great creative team and the amazing community support received, we have all the ingredients to create something really special for our community."
Looking for Halloween fun?: Here are 10 events around Bay County you don't want to miss
Located at 19 E. Fourth St., Fright Nights will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 28, 29 and 31. Admission ranges from $15 to $20, depending on the night. Tickets are now on sale online or can be purchased at the door.
Fright Nights follows the story of the Raven Queen, a towering sorceress who some may remember from last year's haunted walking tour.
According to the story, the development of downtown Panama City has encroached on the Raven Queen's domain, the Ravenwood Forest. Now, she has stormed into town with her minions to gather the souls of the citizens as restitution for this transgression. Guests will have to weave their way through Iktomi's spider cavern, avoid the queen's hidden henchmen and survive Ravenwood's Carnival of Souls to help break the Raven Queen's hold on Panama City.
"We always look into ways to tie in creativity to tell stories or show arts, and this is one of those ways," Kretzer said. "So it's not just a haunted house for us, we're looking at it as an immersive art exhibit that just happens to scare the pants off people."
The entire experience is comprised of volunteers within the local community.
In addition, the tour is wheelchair accessible and recommended for audiences age 12 and up. However, it's suggested parents consider their children's tolerance levels for jump scares, creepy scenes and loud noises.
"Planning Fright Nights has been a new experience for us since we are creating interactive pockets of terror throughout the entire building," said Tori Haudenschild, education and events manager of Bay Arts Alliance. "It's been awesome to see the outpouring of support we've received from our community for this project."
All the proceeds will go to support Bay Arts Alliance's mission of putting art on every corner. Event sponsors include Destination Panama City, the Downtown Improvement Board and the city's Quality of Life Department.

Things to do for Halloween in Panama City Beach
- Posted by Sandy Piper
Panama City Beach gets seriously spooky during Halloween.
If you’re looking for some spine-tinglingly fun things to do with the family , we’ve put together a ghoulishly comprehensive list.
While we strive to keep all our information up to date, some of these events may not be held each year, and might reflect past years Halloween events… So please be sure to check with each devious destination before you arrive!
Shoot Zombies at the XD Darkride Experience in Pier Park
This ride feels a little out of place here in Panama City Beach. It feels like it should be at one of the major parks in Orlando!
Kiddos and teens will LOVE this, as well as any cooler moms and dads too 😉 Strap yourself into your motion seat, put on your 3D glasses, and grab your laser blaster.
Now just shoot at the bad guys on the screen as the movie unfolds, and compete for the high score with everybody else! Nothing, NOTHING is better than shooting Zombies on Halloween! 🙂
When : All year-round Where : XD Darkride Experience Pier Park
Scarecrow Festival
The family-friendly event is centered around the Scarecrow contest, with prizes for runners up, and the winners.
You can also look forward to spooky storytelling, trick or treating, and themed halloween games for the kiddos.
When : October 19 – 30 Where : Historic St. Andrew’s Bay
Pet Costume Contest (Bark-O-Ween)
In the past, there has been free microchipping, and of course devilishly delicious doggie treats.
The park opens at dawn, and closes at dusk… So be sure to get there in time, or risk waking the undead!
When : October 24 Where : Everitt Avenue Dog Park
Boo at the Beach
Spooky story telling, pumpkin carving, face painting, and of course, a costume contest.
It’s really great for the smallest goblins since it starts early, at 10:00am, and lasts about two hours.
When : October 29 Where: Pier Park
Haunted Hay Ride
There are several ghastly sites set up along the way that are part of the tour.
In addition to the tour, there’s also themed game booths, vicious vendors, and plenty of candy for the kids trick-or-treating.
When : October 28 – 29 Where : Bay County Parks
Halloween Dance
Seniors can enjoy a themed Halloween dance along with fortune telling, treasure hunts, light refreshments… And of course, dancing.
You don’t have to wear a costume to attend, but we can’t promise you won’t get your blood sucked if you don’t!
When : October 29 Where : Panama City Beach Senior Center
Toys for Kids Halloween Bash
This Halloween themed bash is one of these annual events, and typically features a different theme each year.
Pervious themes include the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
When : October 31 Where : Spinnaker Beach Club
Camp St. Helen Ghost Tour
Learn some fascinating history of the area, all with a spooky twist. The scares are all toned down to make them appropriate for the smallest family members.
Kids are encouraged to come in their costumes though, to “get into the spirit”…
When : October 8 Where : Camp St. Helen
If you have a family, then Pier Park also offers you the peace of mind and safety of an enclosed area.
A great chance to walk around Pier Park with the kiddos all dressed up, and see other families doing the same.
When : October 29th Where : Pier Park
Schoonerweener
Enjoy Jack-o-lantern contests with prizes.
Everyone is invited to bring along your carved pumpkins… If you dare!
When : October 29 Where: Schooners
Pier Park Brew & Boo Halloween Beer Festival
But it’s held on October 31st, and if you show up wearing a halloween-themed costume, you won’t look out of place!
Over 21 only, and wristbands must be purchased, but you can sample dozens of local and nationally brewed beers you might not have sampled before!
When : October 31 Where: Pier Park
Haunted Trail & Pumpkin Patch
2 nights of family-oriented fun, with appropriately awful things to do for all ages.
The Pumpkin Patch and the Peek-A-Boo Trail are perfect for the smallest ghouls in your group.
They will also enjoy the Scaredy Cat Run.
The older zombies and vampires might be brave enough to try the Creepy Cabins and the Haunted Trail…
When : Previously held October 22 – 23 – But not held each year. Where : The Science & Discovery Center of Northwest Florida
