In addition to the pilot training they offer, the team takes passengers on board to discover the most beautiful landscapes of the Aix-Marseille region aboard a Robinson R44 helicopter or an EC120 Colibri.

The experience starts from the Aix-Les Milles aerodrome. Panoramic flights last between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on whether you want to fly over Aix-en-Provence and its historical monuments, take a tour of the mythical Sainte Victoire, or push on to Marseille. Above the city of Marseille, you will fly over its hills, the 710 meters of the Pilon du Roi, the 714 meters of Garlaban aubagnais with a breathtaking view of Marseille, the sea and the islands in the distance. The must for walks is above the Bay of Marseille with the Blue Coast, the ports, Notre Dame de la Garde and the creeks in the background in sight. And if you want more, you can also take the controls of a real helicopter, the Guimbal Cabri G2, to learn the basics of piloting during an initiation flight with one of the instructor pilots.

As for the little story of the Aix-Les Milles aerodrome, it was originally assigned primarily to the Ministry of Defense for the needs of the Air Force, since June 6, 1964 Air Base 114 was located there and comprised two operational units: a helicopter squadron and a transport and training squadron. The Direction Générale de l'Aviation Civile was the secondary assignee for the needs of general aviation: a "civil" zone had been defined to the east of the runway and its management entrusted to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Marseille-Provence within the framework of an AOT. Due to the scheduled cessation of military aeronautical activity, the Central Directorate of Air Infrastructure had announced that the main assignment of the platform allocated to the Air Force would no longer be justified in the summer of 2001.

Today the aerodrome is open to national and international non-scheduled commercial traffic, private aircraft and VFR. Maximum traffic amounts to approximately 60 aircraft movements per year. Its runway can accommodate aircraft over 000 tons. On the other hand, it is not equipped for night flying and does not have customs services.

As for the thorny subject of noise pollution, in 2007, the Aix-les Milles aerodrome was provided with a charter and a monitoring committee by decision of the CCE (Consultative Commission for the Environment) chaired by the sub-prefect of Bouches-du-Rhône.

Rory McIlroy receives Wells Fargo trophy via helicopter in ceremony to honor fallen area police officers

Rory McIlroy received the Wells Fargo Championship trophy via helicopter, as part of a ceremony to honor fallen police officers from a local shooting earlier this month. The special moment neatly complemented McIlroy’s special performance, with the tournament also announcing a $125,000 donation to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Foundation in memory of the fallen officers.

McIlroy finished 17 under at Quail Hollow Club for a five-stroke victory over Xander Schauffele, his fourth victory at the Charlotte, North Carolina venue. As he partook in the winner’s festivities of which he has become accustomed (this marked McIlroy’s 26th TOUR title), a helicopter descended and landed on Quail Hollow’s 18th fairway, with Lee Greenwood’s anthemic “God Bless the USA” playing through the speakers. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Chief of Police Johnny Jennings exited the helicopter with the trophy, flanked by the Honor Guard up the fairway and onto the green, and placed the trophy in the center of a wreath featuring yellow and red roses.

The presentation also included a moment of silence in memory of the officers who were shot. Four area officers – Sam Poloche, Joshua Eyer, William “Alden” Elliot and Thomas M. Weeks, Jr. – were shot and killed April 29 while attempting to serve a warrant at a Charlotte-area home. Four additional officers were also shot in the incident.

Weeks had served as a tournament volunteer at the Wells Fargo Championship, as well.

“Because of the incredible commitment that the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has done with the Wells Fargo Championship, and in support of the families of the fallen officers and the remainder of those officers that stand behind the badge, we’re announcing a gift today of $125,000 to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Foundation in support of your officers,” said Kendall Alley, General Chair, Champions for Education.

“Their legacy will forever inspire us to strive for a better tomorrow,” said Quail Hollow Club President Johnny Harris. “Let us carry their memory in our hearts and continue to honor their sacrifice through our actions and deeds.”

Airbus has a new aircraft that’s half helicopter and half airplane, designed to speed up flight times for emergency responders. The company calls it the Racer: it has wings like a plane, forward-facing rotors, plus top helicopter blades that seriously make it look like a baby of two aircraft.

Today, Airbus is sharing its one-off working demonstration model of the Racer in France’s southern port city of Marseille for the first time, Reuters reports . It follows new flight images and video posted by Airbus earlier this week that shows how it can take off like a helicopter and make a smooth landing without a long runway. The Racer had its first flight in April .

In an email to The Verge , Airbus Helicopters head of external communications Laurence Petiard writes that a ceremony was held today for the company’s partners in the Clean Sky 2 project, involving 40 partners from 13 different European countries. “They were able to see Racer in flight and then on static display,” Petiard said.

The European Union’s Clean Sky 2 program encourages development of lower-emission air transport and is meant to keep Europe’s aeronautical industry globally competitive.

The project’s head, Julien Guitton, said people are interested in high speeds, but not at the price of negative environmental impact. Simulations show the Racer meets Clean Sky 2 requirements around reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20 percent for conventional aircraft of the same weight, Guitton said.

Airbus has developed similar hybrid test aircraft, including the X3 demonstrator Concept from 2010. Meanwhile, Boeing has built the V-22 Osprey that uses tilt-rotors to achieve higher flight speeds, though that is bulky and designed for air combat. There are also vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft that have been in development for many years — but still haven’t brought about the flying taxi future we’ve been promised.

Airbus unveils half-plane, half-copter in quest for speed

MARIGNANE, France (Reuters) – Airbus Helicopters showcased an experimental half-plane, half-helicopter on Wednesday in a quest for speed as competition heats up to define the rotorcraft of the future.

The Racer is a one-off demonstrator model that combines traditional overheard rotor blades with two forward-facing propellors in a bid to combine stability and speed, shortening response times for critical missions like search-and-rescue.

“There are missions where the quickest possible access to the zone is vital. We often talk about the ‘golden hour’,” Airbus Helicopters CEO Bruno Even told Reuters, referring to the window considered most critical when people need urgent medical attention.

Airbus Helicopters was due to fly the aircraft at its Marignane base outside Marseille in front of 150 industry officials, politicians and representatives from the European Union, which gave support through its Clean Sky 2 initiative.

The demonstration comes months after Italy’s Leonardo and U.S. manufacturer Bell agreed to co-operate on enhancing existing tilt-rotor technology.
