13 film set locations you can visit in the UK

  • 13 film set locations you can visit in the UK

Many of our favourite films and television shows have been filmed right here in the UK. And when we take a minute to appreciate the dramatic coastlines, historic castles, rolling countryside, magnificent stately homes, and buzzing cities our country holds – it’s not difficult to understand why.

If you’ve ever dreamt of connecting with television beyond the screen, why not explore some of the famous sets in person? Whether you’re interested in period dramas, action films, or modern sci-fi movies, here are 13 film set locations that you can visit in the UK.

1. The Dark Hedges, Belfast

The Dark Hedges, Belfast

Game of Thrones (2011) is one of the most successful and popular television series ever produced. The jagged coastlines, impressive castles, and stunning scenery of Northern Ireland provided the perfect filming location for the series’ famous Seven Kingdoms.

Perhaps the most notable of these are The Dark Hedges in Belfast. It was here, for example, that Arya Stark escaped from King’s Landing disguised as a boy in season two.

Other notable sites include Castle Ward, Sallagh Braes, and Inch Abbey. If you’re a true fan and want to see it all, you’ll be pleased to know that you can jump in the car and take yourself on the  self-guided Games of Thrones driving tour . This guide offers three different routes, which stop off around some of the best sites of the Seven Kingdoms.

2. Bath, Somerset

Bath, Somerset

Bath is one of the UK’s most beautifully preserved Georgian-style cities. And for that reason, it’s become a prime location for various period dramas, not least the recent series Bridgerton (2020), which has taken audiences by storm.

Some of Bath’s most notable Bridgerton locations include the Royal Crescent. This striking row of 30 houses, shaped like a half-Colloseum, doubles as London’s Grosvenor Square. Also featured are the Bath Assembly Rooms – where main characters Daphne and Simon first lock eyes.

These locations have become so iconic that there’s now a wide variety of specific Bridgerton tours available in the city. For example, this  two hour Bath walking tour of Bridgerton filming locations , has five-star reviews. Other tours are also available on the  Visit Bath  website.

Though, if you’re not into Bridgerton, there’s plenty more to see in Bath. Various other productions have been filmed here including Vanity Fair (2004) , Sherlock Holmes (2010) , Les Miserables (2012) , and The Duchess (2008) .

3. Alnwick Castle, Northumberland

Alnwick Castle, Northumberland

Having starred in various films and television productions, Alnwick Castle is no stranger to film crews.

Perhaps most well known is the castle’s role as Downton Abbey’s Brancaster Castle in the 2015 and 2016 Christmas specials, and as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy in some of the Harry Potter films. Though, if you’re based in the south of England,  Highclere Castle  in Hampshire was used as the set of the fictional Downton Abbey estate itself and is also worth a visit.

Aside from Downtown Abbey and Harry Potter , Alnwick Castle has appeared in many other productions – including Elizabeth (1998), Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), and most recently, Transformers: The Last Knight (2017).

The castle’s website has its own  Alnwick Castle on screen  page, where you can explore the particular episodes and scenes that the castle appeared in. And, if you decide to visit the castle in person,  Alnwick film tours  are available, where visitors can explore the various film locations in person.

4. Glen Etive, Scotland

film sets you can visit uk

The road of Glen Etive that lies in the heart of the Highlands is arguably Scotland’s most famous and beautiful driving route. 007 fans may recognise Glen Etive from the scene in Skyfall (2012) where Bond tells M that this is where he’s from.

But it wasn’t just the scenery that drew James Bond’s creator Ian Flemming here. While the estate of Glen Etive is now owned by the National Trust of Scotland, it used to belong to Flemming’s family.

If you carry on down the road, you’ll find yourself in Glencoe Valley, which also has a claim to fame. The mountains at the western entrance of Glencoe were used as the background to Professor Hagrid’s hut, the pumpkin patch, and the covered bridge in the Harry Potter films. The area has also appeared in Braveheart (1995) and Rob Roy (1995).

5. Bourne Wood, Surrey

Bourne Wood, Surrey

Bourne Wood in Surrey has been the backdrop for various blockbuster films over the years. Perhaps most well-known of these is the 2000 hit film, Gladiator . The film’s famous opening battle scene took place in the woods and the popularity of the entire film itself has increased the popularity of Bourne Wood as a filming location.

Other productions filmed in Bourne Wood include the opening car chase scene of Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Wonder Woman (2017), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009), and Snow White and the Huntsman (2012).

Apparently, the main draw of the woods as a filming location are its close links to film studios in central London and the spacing of the trees, which increases natural light.

6. Botallack, West Cornwall

Botallack, West Cornwall

In comparison with others on this list, Botallack is a relatively new filming location in the UK. But if you’re a fan of BBC television drama Poldark (2015-2019), then you’ll probably recognise it as the site of Ross Poldark’s mine, Wheal Grace.

Located amongst the rugged ‘Tin Coast’ near St Just in Cornwall, Botallack and the surrounding area’s dramatic scenery has become synonymous with Poldark . It’s the perfect example of how finding the right filming location can transform a production.

If you’re a real Poldark fan and wish to extend your tour, you might be interested in ticking off some of the other places in this list of the  10 best Poldark filming locations in Cornwall . Included are the locations of the many epic galloping-on-horseback scenes that feature in the series.

7. Henrhyd Falls, South Wales

Henrhyd Falls, South Wales

The spectacular waterfall hidden in the western edge of Brecon Beacons National Park is the highest waterfall in South Wales. It recently featured on our list of hidden gems to explore across the UK , and for any Batman fans, it’s a must-see.

Scenes of The Dark Knight Rises (2012) were shot here. Most notably, the location was used to film the infamous ‘Batcave’ – Batman’s secret hideout. Henrhyd Falls is also seen in the final film of the Batman trilogy as the location where the Batcave is discovered by Robin after the supposed death of Batman. And if that wasn’t enough, Hendryd Falls is one of the only waterfalls in the UK that you can walk behind.

With the release of the newest Batman film earlier this year, there’s reason for a renewed interest in this stunning filming location.

8. Osborne House, Isle of Wight

film sets you can visit uk

Osborne House was commissioned by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1845 and arguably became their most-loved residence. Built in Italianate style after Prince Albert said that the views overlooking the Solent strait reminded him of the Bay of Naples, Osborne House makes for a picturesque filming location.

Rather fittingly, the location’s two most notable films are about the Queen herself – Mrs Brown (1997) and Victoria and Abdul (2017), both starring Judi Dench.

Other notable productions filmed on the Isle of Wight include The Cockfields (2019), Top Gear , and Countryfile .

10. Somerset House, London

Somerset House, London

The neoclassical architecture of Somerset House has featured in various productions, such as James Bond: Goldeneye (1997), The Duchess (2008), Suffragette (2015), Love Actually (2003), and Mary Poppins Returns (2018).

In fact, Somerset house has been transformed as a double for various locations. For example, it has appeared as Buckingham Palace, a Victorian stately home and palace, and even as an 18th century New York street scene in Sleepy Hollow (1999).

And, in Goldeneye , when 007 is sent to Russia to investigate a supposed terrorist attack, the car chase that ensues across St Petersburg was actually filmed a lot closer to home – right in the heart of London at Somerset House. According to  Time Out magazine, the crew imported 40 Russian cars and got them to drive around the square multiple times to film the scene.

Lincoln Cathedral, Lincolnshire

Lincoln Cathedral is a Grade I listed landmark and a top filming location. The cathedral has doubled as Westminster Abbey in the Da Vinci Code (2006) and The Young Victoria (2009), and is the backdrop for part of Brad Pitt’s Netflix film, The King (2019).

And, in early 2022, Lincoln Cathedral was transformed into the set for Ridley Scott’s new Napoleon Bonaparte film, featuring Joaquin Phoenix, which is set to release in 2023.

If you want to extend your film-tour while in Lincolnshire, other nearby sites include Burghley House and Cadwell Park where parts of Rush (2013), Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007), and season four of The Crown (2020) were filmed.

12. Chatsworth House, Derbyshire

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chatsworth (@chatsworthofficial)

The 35,000 acre estate at Chatsworth is a beautiful location and has featured in a range of films, television programmes, and documentaries.

Most notably perhaps, Chatsworth House was used as Pemberley – the residence of Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice (2005). When we consider the fact that Jane Austen is believed to have based her idea of Pemberley House on Chatsworth, this is quite fitting. The author also wrote the novel when she was in Bakewell (the surrounding area) herself.

As a souvenir of the filming, Chatsworth House has a resin and marble dust sculpture of Mr Darcy, played by Matthew Macfadyen, on display.

Chatsworth House has also appeared in Peaky Blinders (2013), The Duchess (2008), The Wolfman (2010), and Death Comes to Pemberley (2013). You can find out more on the  film section  of the Chatsworth House website.

13. Hatfield Estate, Hertfordshire

Hatfield Estate, Hertfordshire

Hatfiled Park has been used as a set for an impressive variety of film and television productions since the late 1960s.  According to IMDB , around 70 films and television series have been filmed here.

In addition to the magnificent house, Hatfield Park also covers 42 acres of landscaped gardens – which serve as another brilliant filming lcoation. From The Crown (2020), The King’s Speech (2010), and Batman Begins (2005) to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Enola Holmes (2020), and The Favourite (2018), chances are, you know something that’s been filmed here.

Interestingly, because Hatfield House is privately owned (rather than by the National Trust), crews have permission to do some rearranging of the set. For example, in The Favourite , there are many full shots of Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz in rooms covered in gold-framed portraits and tapestries. Some of these were added by production, while others were original to Hatfield.

Final thoughts…

Film and television bring to life some of our favourite stories and characters, and help us to escape from real life for a while.

But while we all love the experience of watching through our screens, there’s something magical about visiting the exact location where your favourite productions were filmed in person. And the best part is, some of them are just on our doorstep.

Top 50 Filming Locations in the UK

  • March 19, 2022
  • Fun , Places to Visit , Travelling United Kingdom

Hundreds of thousands of people each year travel to the UK, be it to see the streets of the capitals or to explore the natural beauties of the country. While many opt for this journey to see some of the most famous landmarks, they also often have another motivation. Many famous movies and shows were filmed in the UK , some by foreign and others by national studios and companies. Because it has varying landscapes and cities of different architectural styles, the UK has an abundance of versatile locations for visual media of all genres. Many of those movies and shows have a cult following, and the fans often wish to follow in the footsteps of their heroes and see the real-life filming locations.

With all that in mind, we have prepared a list of the top 50 filming locations in the UK by constituent countries.

film sets you can visit uk

Table of Contents

Several major motion pictures and some of the most popular TV series of today were filmed in England . Namely, Harry Potter films and mega-popular Marvel studios blockbusters like Spider-Man: Far From Home and Avengers: Infinity War star several filming locations found in England, UK.

Alnwick Castle

Downton Abbey, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Transformers: The Last Knight

Alnwick Castle is a medieval romanesque castle that made appearances as recognizable locations of major importance. First, its exterior served as a representation of Hogwarts School , more precisely its courtyard. This is where the scenes of Harry learning to fly were filmed. Furthermore, the castle interior appears in Downton Abbey Christmas specials as the inside of Brancaster Castle . Also, both the interior and exterior made appearances in Transformer: The Last Night . Visitors of the castle can take guided tours that will show them all the famous filming locations in this part of UK.

Portobello Road

Paddington & Paddington 2, Notting Hill

The picturesque street in Notting Hill district in West London can be seen in three movies: the 1999 Julia Roberts classic Notting Hill and both Paddington movies. Interestingly, the aforementioned movies bear the name of actual locations related to Portobello Road . While Notting Hill is a district in which the road is, Paddington is the name of a nearby railway station. However, the famous Alice’s Antiques on Portobello Road played Mr. Gruber’s shop in the movie . In real life, Portobello Road is one of the most famous street markets in the world, recognizable for its beautiful pastel buildings. The street is lively, diverse, with a long history and street market tradition.

Cornwall

Alice in Wonderland, Fisherman’s Friends

Cornwall, the very bottom tip of England , is a location rich in history and tradition. It has served as a filming location for two successful movies. The first is Tim Burton’s 2010 Alice in Wonderland , a new adaptation of a beloved English classic. The director chose Antony House in Cornwall as a prominent scenery of scenes set in the real world leading up to Alice’s visit to Wonderland. Furthermore, a small fishing village named Fisherman’s Friends was used to film the majority of the film inspired by a real-life band of the same name.

London, King’s Cross

Batman Begins, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Harry Potter films

Although people mostly recognize it as a name of a railway station from which Harry Potter boarded the magical Hogwarts Express , King’s Cross district has appeared in several other hit films. In Batman Begins , a staircase of a luxurious hotel in King’s Cross appears in the film. However, in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation the famous platform appears in a redesigned form. Interestingly, an entirely new set was built on the existing King’s Cross platform , hence the movie version does not resemble what it really looks like. Nevertheless, thousands of people visit this station annually – either as tourists or passengers waiting for their train.

Filming locations in the UK: King's Cross station

King’s Cross station

Durham Cathedral

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Avengers: Endgame

While this over thousand years old gothic cathedral did not appear in many movies, it certainly made a lasting impression in those that it did. It served as a set for several scenes in the first two Harry Potter films, its corridors and courtyards used to represent Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry . However, the Harry Potter franchise is not the only major franchise that used the cathedral’s gothic beauty. Some scenes from one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, Avengers: Endgame , were filmed at this location. In real life, Durham Cathedral is a part of Durham College and is free to visit.

Hatfield House

Sherlock Holmes – A Game of Shadows, V for Vendetta, Spider-Man: Far From Home

Perhaps one of the most recognizable and used filming locations in the UK, Hatfield House has long been one of the favorite locations for movie makers. The private property of Lord and Lady Salisbury is versatile and adaptable. Hence, it has appeared in around 70 movies so far. In Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows , it played professor Moriarty’s study room. The house’s interior was also featured in Spider-Man: Far From Home as S.H.I.E.L.D. underground headquarters in Prague. Of course, the house facade is also present in many films. Namely, in the opening execution scene in 2005 V for Vendetta .

Wilton House

Tomb Raider, Johnny English Reborn, Bridgerton

Similar to Hatfield House, Wilton House appears in several major films. Its rich facade and interior served as a backdrop for many manors and palaces in movies. The hit-series Bridgerton set during the Regency era features Wilton House as the Royal Palace. However, it is not the only in Bridgerton that Wilton Palace played that role. The end of Johnny English Reborn features the house interior as the location of knighting the comic character played by Rowan Atkinson. Furthermore, the house was used to represent the beautiful Croft Manor in the 2018 Tomb Raider .

Lancaster House

The Crown, The Theory of Everything

Lancaster House is a 19th-century three-story building in the West End of London, a famous district with many tourist locations known also as the theatre district . Interestingly, Lancaster House has often been a stand-in for Buckingham Palace . In fact, filming of The Crown often took place inside the house that played the residence of the royal family. Also, the 2014 award-winning movie Theory of Everything features it as Buckingham Palace near the movie’s end. In the movie, Lancaster House appears when Stephen Hawking, played by Eddie Redmayne, meets Queen Elizabeth II and becomes a member of the order of the Companions of Honour.

Audley End House

The 17th-century countryside house that is more of a palace than its name suggests is an important cultural site and a memorable filming location. Beautiful gardens surround the house and together with the interior design witness the change of styles throughout centuries. However, many may recognize it for another reason: it served as a filming location for Netflix’s The Crown . In the series, the house interior plays a significant role in some of the flashbacks. Namely, it played the part of the famous Elton College where the Queen received tutoring as a child.

Filming locations in the UK: Audley End House

Audley End House

Puzzlewood (Forest of Dean)

Star Wars: Episode VII, Merlin

Puzzlewood is a protected piece of land in the Forest of Dean that has often been used as a filming location. The unique landscape of thousands of years old, dark green trees is a perfect backdrop for science fiction and fantasy. Thus, several shows and movies of those genres feature this location. For example, Puzzlewood played the Forest of Takodana in Star Wars: Episode VII , where important scenes near the very end took place. Also, it was heavily featured in the fantasy series Merlin . Namely, it is where Lady Morgana was hidden and where many magical creatures of Camelot roamed.

Castle Combe

Stardust, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

Castle Combe is a small, picturesque village in Wiltshire often referred to as the prettiest village in England . Because of its medieval roots and adaptable aesthetic, many filmmakers used it as a filming location. Hence, the village appeared as the village of the Wall in the 2007 adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Stardust . Furthermore, it was also used in another book-to-movie adaptation. Seven years before Stardust, Castle Combe was a filming location of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd , an episode of Poirot series based on Agatha Christie’s novels.

Hertfordshire

Johnny English, Batman

Hertfordshire is a county in England north of London with several notable filming locations. The county has a long history and a diverse set of buildings that can be used as a background for various genres of movies and TV series. One of the famous examples is Johnny English starring Rowan Atkinson. Particularly, the climax of the movie – Sauvage’s coronation scene – was filmed in the gothic St Albans Cathedral . Furthermore, Tim Burton’s Batman also features a prominent Hertforshirde building. In the movie, Knebworth House was a shooting location for scenes featuring Wayne Manor .

Filming locations in the UK: Hertfordshire

Hertfordshire

Castle Howard, Northumberland

Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, Victoria, Bridgerton

Castle Howard is an 18th-century castle in North Yorkshire , and a popular filming location in the UK. It took 100 years to complete it, and nowadays it proudly stands as one of the most attractive castles in the county. Interestingly, the castle played Kensington Palace in the 2016 TV series Victoria starring Jenna Coleman. Furthermore, a children’s comedy Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties features the castle’s facade and surroundings as fictional Castle Carlyle. The castle also appears in Netflix’s Bridgerton series, this time as Duke of Hastings country home.

Wye Valley & Forest of Dean

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 was one of the most anticipated movies of the decade, and the only one in the franchise that doesn’t feature the beloved Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry . For many viewers, it was the forest where Harry, Ron, and Hermione hide from Lord Voldemort while searching for Horcruxes. The scene is no other than the Forest of Dean , and the scenes were filmed at the location. However, portions of them were also filmed in the neighboring Wye Valley . Interestingly, both Forest of Dean and Wye Valley are thousands of years old, protected natural sites.

West Bay, Dorset

Broadchurch

Those who have seen Broadchurch will remember the breathtaking, tranquil, albeit unsettling scenery of the bay that is prominent in the series. The bay is no other than West Bay in Dorset, a part of the World Heritage Site called Jurassic Coast . Furthermore, the tall cliffs rising above the soft sandy beach and sea waves form a breathtaking scenery. Hence, it comes as no surprise why David Tennant and Olivia Coleman’s characters spend lots of time at this location throughout the course of the series.

Filming locations in the UK: West Bay, Dorset

West Bay, Dorset

Wales

Landscapes of Wales have frequently appeared in numerous films and TV series. Some of them are the most recognizable filming locations in the UK. However, perhaps the most prominent of all are its multiple appearances in the BBC series Doctor Who and 2010 Robin Hood starring Russel Crowe.

Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes

Lawrance of Arabia

Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes are the centre of Merthyr Mawr Nature Reserve in the south of Wales. The unique landscape in proximity to the village of the same name stretches all the way to the sea. However, what is interesting is the fact that the Sand Dunes doubled as the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula in a 1962 classic Lawrence of Arabia . The film starring Peter O’Toole is based on the life of T.E. Lawrance is a historical drama, and one of the Hollywood classics.

Brecon Beacons National Park

The Dark Knight Rises

The Brecon Beacons is one of the three national parks in Wales and one of 15 national parks in the UK . It is centered around the Brecon Beacons mountain range. Moorland, waterfalls, and living communities compose the scenery of the park that includes a World Heritage Site – Blaenavon . Of course, it comes as no surprise that the park of such beauty was used as a set for a blockbuster. In fact, the stunning Henrhyd Falls doubled as Bat Cave to Christian Bale’s Batman. Another significant feature of Henrhyd Falls is its height – it is the tallest waterfall in southern Wales.

Filming locations in the UK: Brecon Beacons National Park

Brecon Beacons National Park

Nant Gwynant

King Arthur

Snowdonia National Park in northwestern Wales is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque places in the country. But also among the most popular filming locations in the UK. The intact imagery of the mountain slopes looks like it hadn’t been affected by the passage of time, so it is easy to see why many filmmakers choose it as their filming location. Furthermore, one place within the park particularly stands out: the Nant Gwynant valley and its heart, Llyn Gwynant Lake . Also, the national park makes a notable appearance in Arthurian legends . Hence, it is completely natural that director Guy Ritchie chose Nant Gwynant for a scene in which Vortigern introduces Arthur as the king.

Wales Millennium Centre

Doctor Who

Dubbed as “home for the arts in Wales”, the Wales Millennium Centre is a great destination for all things related to art. The Centre hosts multiple plays, musicals, concerts, and various workshops. However, the centre – both its exterior and interior – might be more familiar to the worldwide audience as a set of several Doctor Who episodes. During David Tennant’s run as the Tenth Doctor, two episodes were filmed in the centre: New Earth and The Sound of Drums . Furthermore, the centre was used once again during Matt Smith’s run as the Eleventh Doctor and can be seen in some of the most prominent episodes of his era: The Girl Who Waited and Vincent and the Doctor .

Southerndown Beach

Dunraven Bay in southern Wales is one of the most popular landmarks near Southerndown Village , and it is better known simply as Southerndown Beach. The wide, sandy beach surrounded by cliffs seems otherworldly and attracts thousands of visitors each year. However, it also owes a part of its popularity to the fact that it served as a filming location for several Doctor Who episodes. Furthermore, the scenes in which the beach appears are some of the most emotional-wrenching moments of the series. Particularly, Southerndown Beach doubled as Bad Wolf Bay during David Tennant’s run as the Doctor.

Snowdonia National Park

The World Is Not Enough, Macbeth

As mentioned before, Snowdonia’s beauties didn’t go unnoticed by the film world – and the history of filming in the park spans decades of film history. Interestingly, the landscapes of Snowdonia National Park appear in Roman Polanski’s 1971 Macbeth , an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragedy of the same name. Furthermore, the Snowdonian scenery also appeared in the 1999 James Bond movie starring Pierce Brosnan, The World Is Not Enough . In this movie, Snowdonia doubled as the imagery of Kazakhstan. No wonder, since it is ranked as the best national park in Europe .

Filming locations in the UK: Snowdonia NP

Snowdonia NP

Pembrokeshire

Sherlock, Robin Hood

The scenery of Pembrokeshire is largely built by the county’s coastal nature. As the sea surrounds this charming, naturally rich peninsula and the county’s islands, the inhabitants used their geographical position as an advantage. Furthermore, Pembrokeshire National Park protects the beautiful coast – its roads and the natural habitat of several species. Notably, Pembrokeshire appeared in several shows and movies. BBC’s Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman was filmed at St Catherine Island. Also, Pembrokeshire was among the filming locations of the 2010 Robin Hood .

Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff

Doctor Who, Casualty

BBC Wales’s Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff houses several big-name shows, among which the names of Doctor Who and Casualty stand out. However, if compared to the years those shows have been in production, Roath Lock was built relatively recently. The construction of the studios in Cardiff was finished in 2011, with 9 studios in total inside the building. In fact, Doctor Who moved in during Matt Smith’s era as the titular character in season 7. Additionally, visitors can take guided tours around the sets and see first-hand what some of the most memorable filming locations in the UK look like behind the scenes.

Freshwater West Beach

Robin Hood, Harry Potter, and the Deathly Hallows

Soft sand and the surrounding, fragile dunes of Freshwater West Beach appeared in three blockbuster films in the past decade. In both Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movies, the beach served as a set where scenes involving Shell Cottage were filmed. Also, the beach can be seen in 2010 Robin Hood with Russel Crowe. In the movie, the beach doubled as the Cliffs of Dover , where the big battle took place. Of course, visitors won’t find Shell Cottage on the beach as it was built exclusively for filming purposes, but during the low tide, the beach justifies its status as a filming location in the UK.

Penbryn Beach

Die Another Day

The beach covered in golden sand and backed by stunning cliffs and sand dunes is a relatively undiscovered gem among the beaches in Wales. National Trust protects this site, and there are many things to enjoy – from tasty cakes in the nearby cafe to exploring nearby caves during the low tide. However, the beach is most famous as a filming location of 2002 James Bond: Die Another Day with Pierce Brosnan and Halle Berry. In the movie, the beach is portrayed as a golden, sun-kissed, remote location. Nevertheless, the camera managed to capture the beauty of Penbryn Beach, sparking the interest of location in many viewers.

Menai Bridge

Dolittle

The suspension bridge spanning the Menai strait connects the Island of Anglesey with the mainland. Interestingly, Menai Bridge is one of the first modern suspension bridges in the UK. Because it was built in the early 19th century, its design fit in perfectly with the Victorian aesthetic of the 2020 adaptation of Lofting’s The Story of Doctor Dolittle . Simply named Dolittle, the newest adaptation features Robert Downey Jr. as a titular character set on a quest to retrieve the cure for Queen Victora. As for the bridge itself, it appears near the beginning of the movie. In the scene, a boy named Tommy Stubbins uses the bridge to board Dolittle’s ship.

Scotland

Scotland has for a long time been a source of inspiration, both in written fiction and in filmed media. Thus, it is unsurprising that some of its locations made the list of the top 50 filming locations in the UK. Perhaps one of the most popular series to feature Scottish scenery is Outlander . Also, some scenes in the Harry Potter films were filmed here.

Hunterston House

Outlander

Only 21 miles from the Glasgow Airport and 30 miles from the city itself, the neoclassical Hunterston House is one of the most popular filming locations in Scotland. Because the house has four floors, and the surrounding estate also includes a castle and an outhouse, the location is very versatile. Thus, multiple scenes can be filmed in different rooms within the house or around it. In Outlander , rooms of the house doubled as multiple locations throughout the first three seasons, especially seasons 1 and 2. Furthermore, the house is a private property of Clan Hunter. Outside visitors are not allowed at the site, and visitation is open only to the clan members.

Doune Castle

Game of Thrones, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Outlander

The romanesque castle in Scotland is one of the most legendary filming locations in the UK. Because it is well-preserved and private property, many movies and series of the historical genre were filmed here. However, not many utilized the location as much as the makers of Mony Python and the Holy Grail . Because they were rather restricted with filming location, the filmmakers used the castle as a backdrop for various scenes and had to rely on their creativity to create an illusion of different places. Furthermore, the castle appeared in two popular shows of the 21st century – as Winterfell in Game of Thrones pilot and Castle Leoch in Outlander .

The Glenfinnan Viaduct

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Made worldwide famous by the three Harry Potter movies , the Glenfinnan Viaduct plays a significant role in connecting the nearby Fort William with Mallaig. The viaduct also overlooks Loch Shiel and the Glenfinnan monument. However, the reason why many tourists visit it is because its scenery appeared in three Harry Potter films during Harry’s journeys to Hogwarts. The viaduct first made an appearance in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when Harry and Ron found Hogwarts Express in their flying car. Furthermore, it appeared once again in Prisoner of Azkaban in a scene when the dementors stop the train to search for Sirius Black, and finally briefly in Goblet of Fire .

Glen Coe

Skyfall

A glen of volcanic origin in the Highlands served as a backdrop for a 2012 James Bond film named Skyfall . In geological terms, the glen was formed on the remains of a long-extinct stratovolcano. Within the glen is the Glencoe Village, in which – according to the James Bond lore – is where 007’s ancestors once lived. As such, the village and the glen were some of the most prominent filming locations for the movie. The landscape surrounding Bond’s ancestral home named Skyfall was actually filmed in Glen Coe itself.

Rosslyn Chapel

The Da Vinci Code

The 15th-century gothic chapel in Roslin rose to popularity among tourists thanks to the 2003 Dan Brown novel The Da Vinci Code and, subsequently, the 2006 movie of the same name. Before that, the 6 centuries old church saw a turbulent history, especially following the Reformation. However, it wasn’t until 1995 that the chapel went through a conservation project. And just in time, because 8 years later Dan Brown chose it as a climax location for what would become a worldwide phenomenon titled The Da Vinci’s Code. Of course, Rosslyn was used for filming. Since the movie’s release, hundreds of thousands of visitors have visited the Rosslyn chapel .

Glen Nevis

One of the most beautiful glens in Scotland served as a background in the blockbuster starring Mel Gibson . At the foot of the glen surrounded by the highest mountains on the British Isles lies Fort William . Also, a river named River Nevis flows through the glen, a river above which Setall Falls formed. Those two locations, along with the surrounding mountain landscape, served as some of the primary filming locations in the glen. The opening scene of the movie features its stunning landscape, and many others were filmed along the river.

The Calanais Standing Stones

Brave

The Calanais Standing Stones are similar to the more popular, albeit just as old Stonehenge in the south. The site dates back to the Neolithic era, particularly the Bronze Age of humankind. Although the site is not as popular worldwide as its English sibling, it didn’t go unnoticed in the filmmaking world. In fact, it is these standing stones that inspired the creators of Brave for their design of the Ring of Stones . Furthermore, although the scenes featured in the movie are not technically filmed, but rather inspired by the location, their design is unmistakably similar to the real-life location on the Isle of Lewis .

Filming locations in the UK: The Calanais Standing Stones

The Quiraing on the Isle of Skye

47 Ronin, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Some of the most breathtaking Scottish landscapes are hidden in a remote area of the Isle of Sky , particularly in the Quiraing . The area in the north of the isle, on a ridge known as Trotternish , stretches along the coast, above the sea, and is a beloved hiking destination. Also, many filmmakers decided to use the beautiful landscape to their advantage. Thus, Quiraing can be seen in several movies. For example, the crew of 47 Ronin chose it for a location of the giant Buddha that was added to the landscape with CGI. Also, the landscapes of Quiraing are present throughout King Arthur: Legend of the Sword .

Cloud Atlas, World War Z

The metropolis on the River Clyde had long been an undiscovered gem when it comes to filming potential. Glasgow prides itself on its picturesque scenes and long history. Furthermore, the city’s versatility comes from its architecture: centuries-old buildings, as well as contemporary, make up the scenery of the city. Two movies utilized these qualities well. World War Z , a 2013 zombie apocalypse movie with Brad Pitt, was filmed in George Square and the streets of Glasgow. Also, the 2012 Cloud Atlas features the streets and squares of the city. However, Glasgow doubled as a different location in both movies: in World War Z as Philadelphia and as San Francisco and London in Cloud Atlas.

glasgow

Clyde Arc, Glasgow

Isle of Harris

2001: A Space Odyssey

The Isle of Harris is widely known for its diverse, breathtaking landscapes. From stunning beaches to lakes and mountainous landscapes, the island treasures a lot worth exploring. However, perhaps the most famous location on the island is on its north. The rugged terrain resembles that of the Moon . Because of its lunar-like features, the area was used as a filming location in Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 2001: A Space Odyssey . In the movie, it doubled as the surface of Jupiter. The scenes in which the Isle of Harris appears play near the very end of the movie. The scenes are a bird’s eye-shot, and they were tinted in post-production to make the island appear even more out of this world.

Edinburgh

Trainspotting, Cloud Atlas

Edinburgh has been the capital of Scotland since the 15th century. Hence, it is a city of rich history, stunning architecture, and lots of filming potential. The cobbled streets of Edinburgh are perhaps the most recognizable streets of Scotland. Perhaps the most famous movies featuring the city are Trainspotting and Cloud Atlas . The iconic opening of Trainspotting takes place in the streets of Edinburgh and was filmed on location. Furthermore, the 2012 blockbuster Cloud Atlas also used several locations in Edinburgh as a backdrop for its scenes, namely the Scott Monument, Victoria Terrace, and the City Chambers.

Edinburgh

Neist Point, Island of Skye

Breaking the Waves, 47 Ronin

Neist Point lighthouse is one of the most famous landmarks on the Island of Skye , located in the west of the island. Although it is quite remote, and the road to the location can get dangerous during strong winds, the scenery of the location is absolutely breathtaking. It is also quite cinematic, especially during the sunset. Then, the sky turns cotton candy pink, and the colour beautifully matches the blue of the sea and the stunning, tall cliffs. Unfortunately, the potential of the location hasn’t been used much because it is difficult to access. However, Neist Point can still be seen in some movies. Namely, 1996 Breaking the Waves starring Emily Watson and 2013 47 Ronin starring Keanu Reeves.

Durmlanrig Castle

This 17th-century castle is one of the largest in Scotland, and certainly among the most recognizable. It has 120 rooms, and its interiors have many treasures. Namely, the original Rembrandt painting named Old Woman Reading . Furthermore, the castle is open for visitors who can take guided tours around the castle. Due to its facade made out of red sandstone, the castle is often nicknamed “ The Pink Palace ”. However, the fans of Outlander may recognize the castle for something else. The castle doubled as Duke of Sandringham’s estate and Bellhurst Manor in season 2 of the series.

Kinloch Rannoch and Rannoch Moor

Outlander, T2 Trainspotting

The remote, scenic village Kinloch Rannoch in the Scottish Highlands isn’t often used as a filming location, but when it is – it serves as a backdrop for many iconic scenes. The village and a famous Rannoch Moor lie on the shore of Loch Rannoch , to which they owe their names. Furthermore, Kinloch Rannoch made its first prominent appearance in Outlander . One of the most iconic scenes of the series is the one in which Claire travels through time when she comes across Craigh na Dun . Also, it served as a backdrop in another iconic scene; the “It’s sh**e being Scottish” scene in T2 Trainspotting .

Eilean Donan Castle

The World Is Not Enough, Entrapment

The 13th-century castle on a point where three sea lochs meet is one of the most visited landmarks in the Highlands . And rightfully so. The image of the romanesque castle on a small island, surrounded by beautiful lakes is hardly an image one can resist. Of course, the scenery has lots of cinematic potential. Hence, it has appeared in over 20 movies and series.  However, its most iconic appearances are those in James Bond: The World Is Not Enough with Pearce Brosnan and in Entrapment with Cathrine Zeta-Jones. In The World Is Not Enough , the castle doubled as Castle Thane’s headquarters. Also, the castle appears as Robert MacDougal’s castle in Entrapment .

Filming locations in the UK: Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle

Northern Ireland

The only part of the United Kingdom located on the island of Ireland has served as a filming location many times. However, its most notable appearances were in HBO’s Game of Thrones .

Dark Hedges

Game of Thrones

The stunning avenue of beech trees was planted by the Stuart family nearly three hundred years ago. Since then, it has become one of the most photographed locations in Northern Ireland and a beloved tourist attraction. However, a layer of eerieness surrounds the avenue and makes it even more attractive. According to a local legend, the avenue is haunted by a spirit called the Grey Lady . Also, the location is recognizable due to it being a filming location of season 2 of Game of Thrones . In the series, the avenue appears as the King’s Road .

Castle Ward

Game of Thrones, Your Highness

The 18th-century mansion is abundant in character. It was built in two different styles of the time – the classical and the neo-gothic, both on the outside and the inside. This gives the mansion a unique and recognizable look and charm. However, it also has beautiful surroundings. Although it is certainly charming and versatile, the castle wasn’t a major filming location before Game of Thrones . It was when the crew chose the castle to double as Winterfell, and serve as a backdrop for Whispering Wood and Robb Stark’s Camp that it rose to fame. Furthermore, the castle served as a filming location for the 2011 fantasy comedy Your Highness .

The murals of Derry/Londonderry

Derry Girls

The murals of Derry are the most famous political murals in Europe. They first appeared on the streets in the sixties, during a political crisis in Northern Ireland known as The Troubles . The murals appear in several scenes in the 2018 series Derry Girls . Because the story takes place in the nineties during the aforementioned crisis, Derry – the second largest city in Northern Ireland – served as an important filming location. Because the murals are a significant part of the political climate of the time, it only made sense to feature them in the show. However, the series earned its own mural – the mural of the principle cast can be found on Badger’s Bar in Derry.

Tollymore Forest Park

Dublin Murders, Game of Thrones

The park nestled at the foot of the Mourne mountains has served several times as a filming location. The forest park is beautiful and offers panoramic views of the mountains and the nearby sea. But, it also has a quality that makes it a fantastic location for various genres of movies and series. In Dublin Murders , the forest serves as a crime scene – a location where children go missing, and only one ever returned. Furthermore, another popular show chose it as a backdrop of important events in the story. Tollymore Forest Park doubled as the Winterfell forest in Game of Thrones , serving as a setting where the White Walkers arc began and ended.

Ballycastle

Ballycastle is a seaside city in County Atrim . Also, it is in Antrim Coast and Glens Area of Outstanding National Beauty. The city has charming architecture, beautiful locations, and is the very heart of the protected area. Because of these qualities, many visitors come to spend their holidays here each year. However, one of the most popular sites is just several minutes outside the city – the Fairhead cliffs known as the tallest cliffs in the area. Filming of season 7 of Game of Thrones took place here, namely the first three episodes.

Causeway Coastal Route

Grace and Goliath, Game of Thrones

The 190 kilometers long coastal route is among the most popular tourist destinations in Northern Ireland for a very good reason. The route is filled with breathtaking, unforgettable locations and landscapes. It has many locations one can explore, and it is extremely cinematic and photogenic. As such, it is a great filming location for various fantasy series. In fact, Game of Thrones utilized the location’s beauty and versatility to the maximum. Various destinations doubled as some of the most famous landmarks of the show; namely Dragonstone and Winterfell . Also, Causeway Coastal Route appeared in the 2018 movie Grace and Goliath which takes place in Northern Ireland.

Giant’s Causeway

Dracula Untold

Giant’s Causeway is UNESCO’s World Heritage Site and a place of important cultural significance for Irish folklore. According to the legend, the columns are remains of a causeway built by a giant so Fionn mac Cumhaill could fight his challenger. However, the scenery is actually a byproduct of an ancient volcanic eruption in the area. Nevertheless, Giant’s Causeway is a location of undeniable beauty and many have recognized that. Filmmakers are no exception. In fact, Giant’s Causeway doubled as the mountains of Transylvania in 2014 Dracula Untold starring Luke Evans.

Giant’s Causeway

Giant’s Causeway

Town of Portrush

Artemis Fowl, Game of Thrones

Portrush is a seaside town that grew from a small fishing village to a beloved holiday destination. Because the town is in County Atrim , it also serves as a great gateway to the beauties of the Causeway Coastal Route . However, Portrush is by far most known as a destination with beautiful beaches. In fact, some of them served as filming locations for various movies and shows. Among the most popular is undoubtedly Game of Thrones . In it, Portstewart Strand in Portrush doubled as Dornish coastline. Furthermore, Whiterocks Beach

Game of Thrones, Line of Duty, The Fall

Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland and its largest city. Once primarily a port town, Belfast has grown immensely throughout the centuries of its history. Perhaps the most recognized symbol of the city is the stunning Belfast Castle. However, its streets proved to be more attractive to filmmakers. Several episodes of Line of Duty were shot in various locations throughout the city: from the streets to Central Library. Similarly, another series – The Fall – also used various outdoor locations in the city as filming locations. However, Game of Thrones set in Belfast was exclusively indoors. Several scenes of the final two seasons were filmed in Titanic Studios.

10 famous UK film locations to visit in real life

author_avatar

Recently updated on July 6th, 2023 at 10:05 am

The UK has set the scene for some of the world’s most iconic films and TV shows past and present. But instead of exploring the world via the silver screen, why not visit some of the famous film locations in real life?

Our round-up of the UK’s best film locations puts the spotlight on the places that don’t just bring stories to life, but are destinations worth visiting in their own right. From the high-society estates that housed our favourite period dramas to the atmospheric Scottish Highlands and the Oxford college that lets you walk – quite literally – in the footsteps of Harry Potter. Whether you’re a film buff planning an itinerary or merely looking for a good day out, these top UK movie locations are guaranteed to entertain. Lights, camera, action.

Northern Ireland UK film locations

1. Ballymoney, Northern Ireland Game of Thrones

This otherworldly tree tunnel would be well worth a visit even if Arya Stark hadn’t travelled along here with Hot Pie, Gendry and Yoren on her escape from King’s Landing in season two of Game of Thrones. On an off-the-beaten-track country road, the gnarled beech trees – known as the ‘Dark Hedges’ by locals – date back more than two centuries. Head here early in the day, when visitors are few and morning mists up the drama. Plus, it’s just a 20-minute drive from here to the fabled Giant’s Causeway.

Bath Somerset UK film locations

2. Bath, Somerset Bridgerton

Bath is one of the UK’s most beautifully preserved, Regency-era cities and, for that reason, prime location for throwback dramas – silver screen adaptations of Persuasion, Vanity Fair and Sherlock have been shot here. But if you got caught up in the gossip of Lady Whistledown’s society papers, it’s no doubt Bridgerton that springs to mind when you see its Georgian terraces. The sweeping Royal Crescent, designed by architect John Wood in the mid-1700s, stands in for London’s Grosvenor Square while the Bath Assembly Rooms are where Daphne and Simon locked eyes and… hearts.  GET INSPIRED BY: Amazing Britain

3. Glenfinnan Viaduct, Scotland Harry Potter

Perhaps the most iconic of Harry Potter film locations, the Glenfinnan Viaduct carries its railway line over 21 majestic arches. We don’t recommend crossing in a flying car (like Harry and Ron did in the Chamber of Secrets), but we do recommend living out your Hogwarts Express fantasies aboard The Jacobite instead. The steam train runs a scenic service between Fort William, near Ben Nevis, and Mallaig in summer. Be warned: the compartments you see on Harry Potter sell out months in advance, so book ahead. The views of Loch Shiel are pure magic. RELATED CONTENT: 13 Scottish destinations every Harry Potter fan should visit

Hogwarts Christ College Oxford UK film locations

4. Christ Church College, Oxford Harry Potter

But what about inside Hogwarts? The School of Witchcraft and Wizardry wasn’t shot in one place but several across England, including Lacock Abbey in Wiltshire and Gloucester Cathedral, which stood in for the school’s hallways. But it’s Christ Church College that really has the wow factor. Tucked in among Oxford’s dreaming spires, its Great Hall was the inspiration for Hogwarts’ dining hall, while the Bodley staircase and its cloisters pop up in the Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets. Muggles are welcome to visit, though you will have to pay an entry fee. A 10-minute walk away: the beautiful Gothic ceiling of Bodleian Library’s Divinity School – yet another Harry Potter movie backdrop. Spellbinding.  RELATED CONTENT: 15 of the prettiest places to visit in England

Leadenhall Market London_ UK film locations

5. Leadenhall Market, London Harry Potter

Harry Potter fan in London? The Warner Bros Studio in Watford is just a 20-minute train ride from London Euston, with a shuttle bus available thereafter. But you don’t have to travel far to be bewitched by some of the UK’s most famous film locations. In central London, wander across the Millennium Bridge destroyed by Death Eaters in the Half-Blood Prince, visit Platform 9 and ¾ at King’s Cross Station or admire the Victorian architecture of Leadenhall Market, the real-life Diagon Alley. Potter fans will immediately recognise the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron at 42 Bull’s Head Passage. GET INSPIRED BY: London Explorer

Hatfield House_UK film locations

6. Hatfield House, Hertfordshire The Crown

Thought The Crown was shot at Buckingham Palace? Think again. That being said, the hit series’ film locations do join the dots between the UK’s most prestigious addresses, from the 16th-century Chatsworth House in Derbyshire (also filming place for Pride and Prejudice) to the Rothschild family’s Waddeson Manor in Buckinghamshire and Greenwich’s Old Royal Naval College, where Henry VIII was born.

An hour’s drive from London, the Jacobean Hatfield House was where Elizabeth I spent her (real-life) childhood and, on screen, was used as the home of Queen Mary, Elizabeth II’s widowed grandmother. It’s close to many studios so you may recognise it from other flicks: Wonder Woman, The King’s Speech and The Favourite, for which Olivia Colman scooped the Oscar for Best Actress. Best of all, you don’t need to be a blue blood to visit today. RELATED CONTENT: The best day trips to escape London this summer

Cairngorms Scotland UK film locations

7. Cairngorms National Park, Scotland Mary Queen of Scots

If you enjoy a regal romp across the UK, wind the clock back further in time to the era of Mary Queen of Scots. Her namesake biopic starring Saorise Ronan and Margot Robbie (who plays her sister, Elizabeth I) was shot across the UK, including in the Chiltern Open Air Museum and the pretty seaside town of North Berwick. But it’s the scenes set against the undulating Cairngorms that really capture imaginations – along with all those spectacular costumes, of course. Poldullie Bridge near Strathdon is where Mary ambushes rebel forces. GET INSPIRED BY: Scotland’s Highlands, Islands and Cities

Notting Hill UK film locations

8. Notting Hill, London Notting Hill

Is there a film location quite as iconic as William Thacker’s royal-blue door in Notting Hill? Find it at 280 Westbourne Park Road before exploring the candy-coloured neighbourhood that made us sweet for Richard Curtis’ blockbuster. Visit Portobello Road Market (where the opening scenes were shot) and keep an eye out for number 142, the location of the fictional Travel Book Company shop – it’s The Notting Hill Bookshop today.

Time to spare? Tack on a visit to elegant Kenwood House in Hampstead Heath. The stately home and gardens is where William meets Anna on the movie set. It makes for a rather refined afternoon out. Make sure to stop at the café after admiring its impressive art collection. RELATED CONTENT: London Destination Guide

South Bank London UK film locations

9. Gabriel’s Wharf, London Love Actually

London’s most recognisable landmarks set the scene for this classic rom-com. We recommend buying something delicious to go from Borough Market (stopping to look up at Bridget Jones’ flat above The Globe Pub on Bedale Street) and walking along the River Thames to Gabriel’s Wharf to sit and eat on the bench where Sam told step-dad Daniel about the “total agony of being in love”. From there, catch the underground (Jubilee line from Southwark to Bond Street) for a spree in Selfridges, where Harry (Alan Rickman) tries buying an illicit necklace from a dallying Rowan Atkinson. Highclere Castle_UK film location

10. Highclere Castle, Hampshire Downton Abbey

Enjoy a slice of high society in the Grade-I listed Highclere Castle, better known as Downton Abbey. With manicured grounds by Capability Brown, Highclere’s past is as storied as its present. It was here, in the 1920s, that the fifth Earl of Carnarvon housed Egyptian artefacts collected in the company of Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings. And in the First World War it became a hospital for wounded soldiers. Today, visitors can take guided tours or stay the night in one of its lodges. If walls could talk…

9 Iconic Film And TV Locations To Visit In The UK

film sets you can visit uk

  • Activities and Interests
  • Destinations
  • History and Culture
  • Pop Culture
  • United Kingdom

If you have a deep love for a certain film or TV show, there’s nothing quite like visiting the location it was filmed in and standing right there where your favorite scenes were shot. Even if you only have a passing interest in TV and film, seeing the locations for yourself can stir an emotional response and a feeling of greater connection with the story.

The UK has many great film locations, due to the landscape and its many old stately homes, castles, and areas of countryside almost untouched by modern life. You can take tours of film locations, walk in the footsteps of your favorite characters, and find out how old houses and ordinary locations were transformed into the film sets you know and love. To get you started, in no particular order, here are nine iconic film and TV locations to visit in the UK.

giant being carried

1. Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire

In the film starring Robert Downey Jr., Blenheim Palace stands in for Buckingham Palace, and it does a good job of it. Located miles from the Oxfordshire countryside, Blenheim Palace was the birthplace of Winston Churchill. There’s a special exhibition on his life and adventures in the house. You can even visit the room he was born in. The palace is the choice for many films and TV shows to set a scene or two in, due to its grand size, splendor, and the gardens and land surrounding it. The palace also featured in James Bond, Harry Potter, Mission Impossible, and Gulliver’s Travels. There’s a lot to see here, including formal gardens, a walled garden, a maze, nature trails, and buggy rides.

2. Morlais Park, Wales

One of the series’ most significant battle scenes, the battle at the Inn of the Slaughtered Lamb, was filmed at Morlais Park, the former quarry, in southeast Wales. The park is made up of a series of four limestone quarries situated on the west and north slopes of Morlais Hill. Each of the quarries offers its own atmosphere and secluded gathering points for large groups, making it the ideal location for the big battle scene in Willow , the new Disney+ TV show. Nearby are the ruins of Morlais Castle , and like the quarry, the sheer size of it is awe-inspiring.

Pro Tip: This is a popular location with climbers and photographers and you’re likely to see a lot of people here scaling the walls of the quarries and photographing the landscape. If you visit because you love Willow , be aware you’re unlikely to get this site to yourself.

library at Weston Park with painting over fire

3. Weston Park, Shropshire

Benediction.

The film Benediction , released in 2021, is about the life and works of the war poet, Siegfried Sassoon. It’s a very British film and so it’s no surprise that the movie was filmed in various locations around the UK. But when it came to recreating The Reform Club in London, which Sassoon and his fellow poets frequented, the library at Weston Park was the first choice. Once at the house, the film crew decided it was so perfect they’d film more scenes there, including using the orangery for a party scene and using part of the house as the setting for Sassoon’s mother’s house. Visitors can see inside this 17 th -century house and walk through the gardens. It’s a beautiful old house and a lovely place to visit whether you know the film or not. You can even stay in one of the cottages or the Victorian Wing of the house and feel like you’re part of the story.

stately estate

4. Somerleyton Hall, Norfolk

When it came to filming season four of The Crown , the filmmakers needed a location to double as Sandringham House, The Queens’ private country retreat, Somerleyton Hall stood out as the perfect place. The two houses share a lot in common. They were both Jacobean houses originally, both were remodeled in Victorian times, and so they have a similar look and feel to them. The hall featured a lot in this series and was the backdrop to many of the scenes showing the tension between Prince Charles and Diana. Today, the hall hosts weddings and can be booked for private events and parties by private request only. The gardens can be enjoyed by visitors from Easter to October.

Pro Tip: The house is still a home and isn’t open to the public for general admissions. It is used for private functions, but if you visit because you love The Crown, you won’t get to see the interior and where the filming took place. You can view the house from the outside and enjoy the gardens, but be aware that this is a private residence.

The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, designed by Norman Foster and opened in 1978, with a Henry Moore sculpture at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, Norfolk, UK.

5. Sainsbury Centre, Norwich

Avengers: age of ultron.

The Sainsbury Centre is a museum and gallery of visual arts, and in the film, Avengers: Age of Ultron , the center was used as the Avengers’ head office. It’s hard to believe this was the location for such a huge movie when you visit. It feels unassuming and quite modest inside. It even feels a little bit ordinary. It’s free to enter and you can wander around at your leisure, enjoying the exhibits in peace and tranquility. It’s a lovely place to visit, but it certainly doesn’t feel like a film set. It’s an interesting building though, and from the outside, you can see why it was chosen. If you’re a fan of the Avengers movies, the outside of the building looks just as it did in the film, so it’s a great place to have some photos taken and stand where your favorite characters stood.

6. Callendar House, Falkirk, Scotland

This 11th-century house in Falkirk in Scotland was an easy choice for part of the filming of Outlander , due to its age and the period look and feel to it. As soon as you approach you can see that this is ideal for the period show. The kitchen at Callendar House was used as the kitchen in the Duke of Sandringham’s home, Belhurst Manor. The kitchen at Callendar House is still a focal point for visitors, whether you’re traveling to the house because you love Outlander or not. It’s in the kitchen where you’ll find members of staff in period costume telling stories of what it was like to work below stairs and offering samples of 19th-century food for you to try. On the grounds, there’s a nature trail, a golf course, woodland, and children’s play areas.

Trinity House at night

7. Trinity House, London

Trinity House is conveniently located in the city a short walk from the Tower Hill underground station behind the iconic Tower of London and overlooking the River Thames. The railings have been featured in several filmed productions including Lara Croft: Tomb Raider . The house overlooks Trinity Square Gardens and its memorials. Although it is normally closed to members of the public, there are guided walking tours that members of the public can book.

Inch Abbey in Northern Ireland. Monastery ruins in Downpatrick

8. Inch Abbey, County Down, Northern Ireland

Game of thrones.

The ruined Inch Abbey in Northern Ireland was the location for the scene in Game of Thrones when Rob Stark became the king in the north. It’s free to wander around the ruin and information boards are giving an overview of its history, but there aren’t any facilities here. The abbey dates back to the 12 th century. It’s a beautiful spot and it’s a place of pilgrimage for Game of Thrones fans. Walking tours are organized from Dublin, and include cloaks, swords, and shields so those taking part can look and feel like they’re part of the filming. Whenever you visit, you’re likely to see many visitors in full Game of Thrones costumes.

Pro Tip: If you take the walking tour, be prepared for a lot of walking. This is a full day, with lunch included, and you need to have a good level of physical fitness.

9. Assembly Rooms, Bath

Built in 1769, these grand rooms were originally used for parties and social gatherings, and not much has changed. Today the rooms can be hired for weddings, events, and parties, just as they always were. Visitors can also pop in for a look around while in the lovely city of Bath. The rooms were used in the TV show, Bridgerton , as the location for some of the incredible balls that were held in the popular Netflix series. You can take a walking tour of some of the filming locations for Bridgerton in Bath, which includes the Assembly Rooms .

Pro Tip: You can book the walking trip and take the tour with a group of other visitors, but if you have a large party with you, you can book the tour privately so you get to visit the Bridgerton sites with your one-to-one guide.

1. Pride and Prejudice

Lacock abbey & village, wiltshire.

Lacock Abbey was founded in the early 1200s and was once home to William Henry Fox Talbot, the pioneer of photography – who would probably have approved of how popular it has become for filming.

But it’s not just the abbey that is being featured in TV and film productions, but the village with its timber-framed cottages, is just as popular.

2. Game of Thrones

Stranocum, northern ireland.

The Dark Hedges tree tunnel, in County Antrim, was planted in the 18th century. It was designed to impress visitors as they approached the entrance to Gracehill House, a Georgian mansion. Great Chalfield Manor was featured in the TV series Poldark (2015-19) as Killewarren, the home of wealthy Ray Penvenen and his niece Caroline in the 1790s. The show’s location manager David Johnson said he was looking for a house that implied ‘old money’ and would have been owned by the family for more than 150 years.

It is most famous as being Austin Friars, Thomas Cromwell’s country home, in Wolf Hall, the 2015 BBC2 drama series, staring Mark Rylance. There were 12 days of filming at the manor, where the crew shot by candle light to achieve the authentic feel of the era – even using candles in fireproof boxes for camera lighting.

Glen Coe, Scottish Highlands

If you’re a fan of 007 James Bond, you’ll recognise Glen Coe and Glen Etive from the film Skyfall (2012). In the film Bond takes a trip to where it all began, reconnecting with his roots and visiting his old family home Skyfall Lodge.

5. Downton Abbey

Highclere castle, hampshire.

Highclere Castle had its roots in Anglo Saxon times, but the house you see now was built in 1679 and then renovated in the 1840s. Surrounding it is parkland designed by the famous garden designer Capability Brown, in the 18th century.

6. Notting Hill

Portobello road, london.

Notting Hill was forever changed by its namesake 1999 romantic comedy starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts.

Number 142 Portobello Road was used as the location for William Thacker’s travel bookshop, where he memorably first meets film star Anna Scott. Today it’s a gift shop, but on the side is a sign saying ‘The Travel Book Shop’ which was made up by the shop’s owners.

7. Star Wars & Harry Potter

Forest of dean, gloucestershire.

Puzzlewood is an ancient woodland, in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire. The area contains caves, ancient trees, unusual rock formations, and a maze of paths.

It was used as a location for the forest of Takodana in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens. But the wood has also appeared in dozens of other film and TV productions, including The Secret Garden, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1, The Huntsman and is a regular location for Doctor Who.

8. The Crown & Bridgerton

Stowe gardens, buckinghamshire.

The Georgian landscapes of Stowe Gardens are popular with visitors and filmmakers alike for its lakes, follies and sweeping views.

Its Temple of Ancient Virtue doubled up as a mausoleum in the third series of Netflix The Crown – 94 supporting artists were on site, as well as Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II.

In The World is not Enough (1999), the Gothic Temple was the backdrop for a scene involving Pierce Brosnan as 007 and Judi Dench as M.

And fans of the Netflix series Bridgerton may recognise it as the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, where the Temple of Venus was backdrop for the dancefloor and a spectacular firework display, which took the 50-strong crew five days to set up.

9. Doc Martin

Port isaac, cornwall.

The long-running ITV series Doc Martin may be set in the fictional seaside town of Portwenn but it’s filmed in the very pretty harbour village of Port Isaac. Fans will recognise many locations from the show as they wander through its pretty lanes.

Fern Cottage is easily recognisable as Doctor Ellingham’s surgery and is easily found by walking 100m past the harbour and up the hill towards the coast path.

You can even stand in the doc’s shoes and have a pint The Golden Lion Pub, which is the Crab & Lobster in the series.

10. Harry Potter

Alnwick castle.

Alnwick Castle has been home to the Percy family for more than 700 years and they’ve been happy to share it in more recent times with visitors and a host of film and TV crews.

The UK filming locations you can actually visit

More film and tv series than ever are being shot on our shores. andrew eames picks the top spots you may recognise….

Port Isaac in Cornwall, where Doc Martin is filmed

F ilm and television production in the UK is in a very good place, according to a report from the British Film Institute published last week. Spending increased 74 per cent from 2016 through to 2019, and initial figures from 2021 point to a very quick post-lockdown recovery, partly thanks to the UK’s tremendous variety of outdoor settings. Meanwhile “set jetting” — travelling to visit locations seen on screen — is on the up too; TV tourism was worth almost £500 million from 2016 to 2019. Here’s our pick of UK spots with a claim to fame (contains spoilers!).

1. Port Isaac, Cornwall

This Cornish fishing village is instantly identifiable as Doc Martin ’s Portwenn. It’s a rugged setting, squeezed between headlands, with a little harbour still used by crab fishers — some of whom formed a group called Fishermen’s Friends, the subject of the 2019 film of the same name. The village is served by a narrow street that swoops down one side and then hares up the other, while a path branches off, up past where Martin Clunes’s Doc Martin had his surgery. Aficionados can stay in his two-bedroom house, Fern Cottage (one night’s self-catering for four from £326; docmartinhouse.co.uk ).

The Glenfinnan Viaduct, which featured in the Harry Potter films

2. Glenfinnan Viaduct, Highlands

This spectacular viaduct on the railway from Fort William to Mallaig was relatively unknown until a certain boy wizard followed the Hogwarts Express across it in his flying Ford Anglia. Since then, the region’s economy has flourished, with the Jacobite steam train crossing the viaduct four times daily in season. There’s no Potter merchandise, however, and the owners are not even allowed to mention he-who-must-not-be-named. Train fans can rent the Glenfinnan Sleeping Car (one night’s self-catering for ten from £210; glenfinnanstationmuseum.co.uk ).

Jared Leto in Morbius — partly filmed in Manchester

3. The Northern Quarter, Manchester

Film directors have long been fans of the Northern Quarter, mostly because its brownstone buildings with external fire escapes make it an inexpensive stand-in for New York. Marvel’s Morbius was partly filmed here, as were bits of The Crown and Captain America , and iconic yellow cabs are regular visitors. With its murals, shared workspaces and hipster vibe, it’s an agreeable and creative place to hang. As is the new Leven Hotel (room-only doubles from £99; liveleven.com ).

Highclere Castle in Hampshire doubles up as Downton Abbey

4. Highclere House, Hampshire

It’s not particularly old, nor particularly grand, but the casting of Highclere, a stately pile owned by the 8th Earl of Carnarvon, for the title part in the costume drama Downton Abbey has certainly transformed its fortunes. Visitor numbers doubled, and the earl has been able to repair the holes in his roof. Stay in nearby Kintbury on the Kennet & Avon Canal, where the Dundas Arms is another slice of English country life (B&B doubles from £120; dundasarms.co.uk ).

The Dark Hedges, also known as the King’s Road in Game of Thrones

5. Dark Hedges, Co Antrim

Once known for producing huge ships including the Titanic, Belfast’s former Harland & Wolff shipyard now hosts the Titanic Studios, the main facility for Game of Thrones . Although the producers made a speciality out of exotic locations, they also ventured out locally, specifically to Castle Ward (Winterfell Castle), Ballintoy Harbour (Iron Island) and of course Dark Hedges, the road that tunnels through twisted beech trees (aka the King’s Road). The former bishop’s palace at Culloden makes a fine place to stay (B&B doubles from £280; cullodenestateandspa.com ).

Symonds Yat provides the setting for some scenes in Sex Education

6. Symonds Yat, Herefordshire

At first sight, a genteel riverside resort on the banks of the River Wye seems an unlikely setting for the Netflix comedy-drama Sex Education . But why shouldn’t a sex therapist and her teenage son Otis settle in a spectacular-looking place where visitors’ pulse rates are more typically raised by kayaking? Much of the action is at Otis’s school (a building in Cardiff), but his teenage angst is only exacerbated by having to live in a beauty spot with a highly embarrassing mum. Their house, the Chalet, can be rented in real life as a holiday let (four nights’ self-catering for ten from £4,200; thechaletsymondsyat.co.uk ).

The Isle of Skye’s Old Man of Storr has featured in multiple films

7. Old Man of Storr, Isle of Skye

The Old Man is an iconic upright pinnacle that rears up above a typically Hebridean backdrop of misty moorland, loch and sea. It sits on the edge of the Quiraing, an otherworldly boggy plateau, well suited to scenes from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus , as was some of Michael Fassbender’s Macbeth , which were both shot here. The crews built a handy pathway up, and it’s now the most popular walk on the island. Stay where some of the stars did, in the Skeabost (B&B doubles from £159; skyehotel.co.uk/skeabost ).

West Bay, Dorset, where Broadchurch was filmed

8. West Bay, Dorset

The setting for Broadchurch , starring Olivia Colman and David Tennant, is a holiday town at the end of a line of imposing Jurassic cliffs. It’s a relatively inconspicuous place, which is partly the point, because even somewhere so superficially untroubled can conceal savage undercurrents of human behaviour. Stay along the shore in Lyme Regis, also a celebrated film location (for The French Lieutenant’s Woman ) in the Alexandra Hotel (B&B doubles from £280; hotelalexandra.co.uk).

Inverlochy Castle, Glen Coe

9. Glen Coe, Highlands

This giant glacier-carved glen has a history of treachery dating to when 38 hospitable MacDonalds were massacred in their beds by their overnight guests. That makes it a perfect setting for the tragic denouement of Skyfall , in which James Bond’s remote family property goes up in flames and M dies in his arms. Adjacent Glen Nevis was also the location for much of Mel Gibson’s Braveheart . The starry place to stay hereabouts is where Queen Victoria did, at Inverlochy Castle (B&B doubles from £337; inverlochycastlehotel.com ).

Gladiator being filmed at Bourne Wood

10. Bourne Wood, Surrey

This little-known but extremely versatile mix of trees and clearings first came to prominence in the battle scene in Gladiator , and since then has played its part in a whole raft of productions, including Warhorse , Thor , Wonder Woman , Transformers 3 and The Witcher . Mostly pine trees on sandy soil, it can pass itself off as central and eastern Europe, or even the Baltic, unlike its adjacent town, Farnham, which is unmistakably English. Stay at Bel and the Dragon, a stylish roadside inn in Churt (B&B doubles from £70; belandthedragon-churt.co.uk ).

Sets To Visit In The UK

Photo by Aditya Vyas on Unsplash

Over this last year, we’ve all had a lot of time to watch a lot of Netflix. Now that we’re so close to being back to normality (whatever that is), there are so many beautiful sets to visit in the UK. Take yourself from small screen to the real thing.

So many great TV shows and movies are filmed in the UK, it would be a crime for any fan not to visit. Britain and Ireland are famous for their beautiful scenery and if you’re up for some exploring this website will help to find nice treks that are suitable for all the family.

Here’s a round-up of some of the screen locations you can visit.

Well, Bridgerton and Rege Jean-Page certainly provided a national service and took our mind off things for a while. Bridgerton arrived on Netflix and the end of 2020 and quickly became the most-watched show in Netflix history. Thanks to its impossible pretty cast and raunchy scene.

A lot of the beautiful Georgian architecture you see in Bridgerton, including that beautifully curved row of splendid houses, is actually in Bath. Known as The Royal Crescent, it was built in 1767 by John Wood. Wood also designed the Bath Assembly Rooms, which were also featured in Bridgerton.

Harry Potter

The last screen outing for the boy wizard might have been years ago, but there are legions of fans all over the world who will never get tired of J.K. Rowling’s classic creations.

You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to visiting Harry Potter sites around the UK. Head north to visit the majestic Alnwick Castle in Northumberland and Durham Cathederal, both used extensively for Hogwarts scenes. Durham Cathedral was also used in some scenes in Avengers Endgame, so if you’re a Marvel fan, it’s a double treat.

In London, you can visit platform 9 ¾ at Kings Cross Station and The Leadenhall Market – the entrance to Diagon Alley and Lincoln’s Inn Fields with doubles as 12 Grimmauld Place.

The Princess Bride

If you’ve not seen The Princess Bride, correct this error at once. It has history, romance, sword fights, and pirates. It also has some beautiful locations. Derbyshire’s Haddon Hall is probably the most recognisable location. It was used a Prince Humperdink’s castle in the fictional kingdom of Florin.

Haddon Hall is quite the movie start, having also featured in The Virgin Queen, Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice and The Other Boleyn Girl.

The infamous Cliffs Of Insanity in The Princess Bride are the famous Cliffs of Moher in Ireland.

Game Of Thrones

Still not over Game of Thrones ending? Well, you can relive some of the fantastic episodes by visiting some of the beautiful landscapes featured in the series.

Head to Northern Ireland and visit The Dark Hedges, which will be familiar to fans as the King’s Road. The Haunted Forest, where the Night’s Watch first encounter a White Walker is actually Tollymore Forest Park.

Other favourites you might want to visit include the Cashendun Caves (used as The Stormlands), Castle Ward (Winterfell) and Ballintoy Harbour (Lordsport).

Final Thoughts

Hopefully, this has given you a few ideas of how to spend that special vacation time this summer. It should be stress-free after having gone through a year of lockdown, and definitely well deserved. Let me know if there are more sets to visit in the UK.

The dramatic Highland landscapes that inspired the romance of Braveheart and Rob Roy , as well as the dreamy settings of 1983’s Local Hero , linger in the memory. From the old-world fishing village of Pennan to the white sands of Morar and Arisaig filmed in this gentle drama-comedy, the Scottish coasts cast a spell.

Love and passion in Game of Thrones is much darker – often ending in death – but the series makes use of Northern Ireland’s most mesmerising locations. Castle Ward and the medieval ruins of Inch Abbey in County Down, the wild Atlantic at Ballintoy Harbour, Cushendun Caves and the Dark Hedges of County Antrim are just a few of them.

In Wales, The Edge of Love centres around the poet and playwright Dylan Thomas . It showcases alluring Welsh landscapes, from Cardigan Bay and the cliff-top harbour town of Tenby in Pembrokeshire to Snowdonia National Park .

In England, pathos and passion play out against a backdrop of ravishing locations. Gothic love stories feature England’s wildest, most romantic landscapes. The adaptation of Daphne du Maurier ’s Jamaica Inn filmed in an old smuggling inn amid the bleak beauty of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall; Rebecca was shot on the high cliffs of North Devon. The 1992 film of Emily Brontë ’s Wuthering Heights utilises the Gothic drama of Malham Cove and Aysgarth Falls in Yorkshire; Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre , the stately homes and moors of the Peak District .

The Jane Austen adaptations show off a plethora of stately homes up and down the country. The sumptuous costumes, dreamy locations and glamorous lifestyles of the landed gentry are compulsive viewing for many. Who could forget a smouldering Mr Darcy, aka Colin Firth, preparing to take a swim at Lyme Hall in Pride and Prejudice ?

Crummock Water, Cumbria | Supernova

film sets you can visit uk

Supernova is a road movie set within this sweep of land so adored by Wordsworth. The romantic drama details the impact of dementia on a relationship, sensitively portraying a sublime aspect of love when compared to the excitement often seen in stories of fledgling romance.

You can visit many of the filming locations on a bike ride from Keswick , over Whinlatter Pass , down through Buttermere Valley and on through Borrowdale back to Keswick, each with its own share of both tranquil beauty and awe-inspiring nature.

New Quay, Ceredigion | The Edge of Love

film sets you can visit uk

Partly set in New Quay, The Edge of Love (2008) tells of a fictional love triangle between Dylan Thomas, his wife Caitlin and Dylan’s first love, Vera Killick.

Starring Matthew Rhys, Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller, the story is set around a real shooting incident on 6 March 1945, when Vera’s husband William fired shots into Dylan’s bungalow, believing Dylan and Vera were having an affair.

New Quay ’s Dylan Thomas Trail links the poet’s favourite places and includes several film locations. The walk is also a great way to see Mother Nature’s supporting cast.

Carnforth Station, Lancashire | Brief Encounter

film sets you can visit uk

There aren’t many films that qualify as classics, that retain an enduring appeal long after they are made, but nearly 80 years on, Brief Encounter continues to top polls as one of the greatest British films ever made.

Adapted from Noel Coward’s stage play, the film was famously directed by David Lean and many of the scenes were shot in 1945 at Carnforth Railway Station in Lancashire , necessary to avoid the blackout restrictions and wartime disruption that affected filming in London.

It is a tale of the romance and unconsummated love between the married characters of Laura and Alec, played by Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. The station and its refreshment room feature as the backdrop to their first chance encounter and to their final, reluctant, tear-jerking parting.

Shibden Hall, Yorkshire | Gentleman Jack

film sets you can visit uk

"Shabby little Shibden”. That is how Anne Lister (1791–1840) describes her family home in Gentleman Jack , the BBC period drama that portrays the real-life romance between Anne Lister and her neighbour Ann Walker.

Shabby isn’t how you would describe the 600-year-old manor house today. Owned by the Lister family for over 300 years, Shibden Hall is where Anne Lister once lived and wrote her famous encrypted diaries. They remained here, hidden within the walls until John Lister, the last inhabitant of Shibden Hall, found them. The diaries weren’t decrypted until long after Anne Lister’s death and proved to be of great historical importance. They offer an understanding of her life in West Yorkshire and a deep insight into her romantic relationships with the “fairer sex”.

Duart Castle, Mull | I Know Where I'm Going!

film sets you can visit uk

True love blossoms at Duart Castle on Mull for the protagonists in I Know Where I’m Going! . Young, attractive and fiercely independent social climber Joan Webster meets her unexpected catch on the isle – a heart-throb naval officer, Torquil MacNeil.

One of the greatest silver-screen love stories, I Know Where I’m Going! ’s evocative cinematography captures the magic of this Scottish isle, even 75 years on. Blending comedy, romance and dark undertones, the drama begins as Joan (Wendy Hiller) embarks for the fictitious Island of Kiloran to marry an elderly and wealthy industrialist. But a storm maroons her on Mull, where she meets – and soon falls in love with – Torquil (Roger Livesey). In the end, an ancient Celtic curse binds the two together.

Highclere Castle, Hampshire | Downton Abbey

film sets you can visit uk

The Crawley family cordially invite you to peruse the grounds of their home Downton Abbey, known to us layfolk as Highclere Castle in Berkshire . The castle is owned by the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, where tours of the familiar state rooms can be booked directly through the Highclere website .

Downton Abbey’s writer Julian Fellowes had the magnificent Highclere in mind when he wrote the script. According to the Highclere website, ‘he wanted a house which spectacularly testified to the confidence and soaring optimism of the Edwardian period’. During filming, the cast sometimes sleep and dine in The Carnarvon Arms, a grade-II listed former coach house. Keep lookout for thirsty cast members in the bar!

Strangford Castle Ward Estate, County Down | Game of Thrones

Knole House, Kent | The Other Boleyn Girl

film sets you can visit uk

Henry VIII was so enamoured with Kent’s stately Knole House he pinched it from the then-Archbishop of Canterbury in 1538 to use as a hunting lodge. The makers of The Other Boleyn Girl , the 2008 Hollywood adaptation of Henry’s turbulent love life, were similarly impressed, using the house’s courtyards as a stand-in for Whitehall Palace, and its turrets as London’s Tudor skyscape.

Much of the house today is 17th century in style, but it’s easy to imagine a macho Henry, played by Eric Bana, riding around the surrounding 1,000-acre estate, little-changed since the monarch’s days. Nearby also lies another Tudor treasure – Ightham Mote . Both houses close out of season, but the grounds are open all year. Visit the National Trust website for more details.

Hathersage Moor, Derbyshire | Jane Eyre

film sets you can visit uk

Charlotte Brontë is believed to have used the Peak District as the setting for her classic novel after a visit to Hathersage in 1845. The BBC’s acclaimed 2006 dramatisation featured Ruth Wilson as the eponymous Jane Eyre , the orphan girl who, against all the odds, forges a relationship with tormented hero Edward Rochester. Filming took place at Bolsover Castle and Haddon Hall , while many of the stunning outdoor scenes were shot on Stanage Edge, the four-mile long gritstone escarpment above Hathersage, better known for its climbing.

Trace Jane Eyre's steps across the moody moorland beneath the expansive skies of the Peak District with our walking guide, or find our more about filming sites via the English Heritage website.

Portmeirion, Gwynedd | The Prisoner

film sets you can visit uk

The Italianate village of Portmeirion was created by the architect Clough Williams-Ellis after he bought a neglected mansion surrounded by a wilderness in 1925. He changed its name from Aber Iâ (Ice Estuary) to Portmeirion. The village contains artistic buildings rescued from demolition elsewhere and took 51 years to complete. Located on a peninsula, it proved the perfect prison from where Patrick McGoohan, inmate Number Six of The Prisoner TV series, repeatedly tried to escape. For details about the series’ film locations, head to Visit Portmeirion .

Bodmin Moor, Cornwall | Jamaica Inn

film sets you can visit uk

The quietly threatening Jamaica Inn , located on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, is a gloomy guesthouse that inspired its own fiction. Novelist Daphne du Maurier once stayed there for three days after getting lost on the moor, thus her tale of shipwreck and illicit temptation was born. Built as a coach house in 1750, this renowned building became a smugglers den between the 17th and 19th century. These days, it’s an inn with a Smuggler’s Museum full of villainous tales and folklore.

The 2014 TV adaptation of Jamaica Inn was filmed in Holywell Bay, Bodmin Moor and Kirkby Lonsdale in order to provide a wealth of historic-looking scenery.

The choice of location shows off the best of British architecture. Make sure to walk through the magnificent drawing hall, where the Crawley family do most of the entertaining. Highclere Castle, where the filming took place, is open to the public for only 70 days a year. This is because it is still home to the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon.

Famous TV and film locations you can visit in the UK

By Virginia Clark

The houses and countryside of Britain exert a powerful pull over the imagination of film viewers everywhere when used as film locations for blockbuster hits and TV shows. Murder mysteries and period dramas are two of our most pervasive cultural exports, and the stately homes and villages which play host to them are some of the most instantly recognisable film locations in the world – just think of the Bath frenzy when the Bridgerton filming locations were revealed. There's nothing which can take you into the world of your favourite film or TV show like visiting its locations, so we've rounded up the UK's stateliest homes and most picturesque villages that have lent themselves to Downton Abbey , Harry Potter and more filming locations that you can go and see.

Harry Potter filming locations Glenfinnan viaduct

Glenfinnan viaduct

Inverness-shire is home to the UK's most spectacular viaduct, which just so happens to be very familiar to any Harry Potter fans. It was used multiple times in the film franchise to show the Hogwarts Express chugging its way along and is every bit as spectacular and impressive in person as you expect it to be. There are two ways to see it; while enjoying a walk in the captivating hills that surround it, or by crossing it yourself on a train journey (granted, you won't actually see it this way but you can pretend to be en route to Hogwarts). The iconic steam train that takes in the route is known as The Jacobite and it runs an 84-mile round-trip from Fort William to Mallaig, where a connecting ferry can take you across to the Isle of Skye. This is a spectacularly scenic day trip to take and we recommend you only do it in the vintage first-class carriage for a wood-panelled interior with tartan lampshades and traditional jacquard upholstery.

Film locations in the UK

Hatfield House, Hertfordshire

The Jacobean façade of Hatfield will be familiar to many, as it has been used in swathes of films and TV shows, as have the interiors. The Favourite – starring Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz – was mostly filmed in and around the impressive stately home, as was Netflix's recent adaptation of Daphne de Maurier's Rebecca with Lily James, which saw Hatfield cast as Manderley. It has been in countless films and when you visit, you'll immediately understand why.

Downton Abbey filming locations

Highclere Castle, Hampshire

The house at Highclere already had plenty of claims to fame before Downton Abbey came along. With its Charles Barry-designed house and park by Capability Brown, it has been the seat of the Earls of Carnarvon and their predecessors since the late seventeenth century, and in the 1920s provided a home for the collected Egyptian artefacts of the 5th Earl, who accompanied Howard Carter on his excavations of the Valley of the Kings. But it is as the location of the period phenomenon Downton Abbey that it has achieved serious fame in the last few years, as the exterior, great hall, and several bedrooms are featured prominently in the show.

Film locations

Fans of Netflix's smash hit Sex Education should make for the Wye Valley as it winds through Llandogo and Symond's Yat. Llandogo, on the Welsh side, is home to a Londis that features in Sex Education as the village shop, while the distinctive red and white house that Otis and his mother Jean live in is across the border in the village of Symond's Yat. The whole show is filmed in the area and the school scenes are filmed at the disused University of Wales campus down the road in Caerleon.

Film locations

Rousham House

This seventeenth-century house in Oxfordshire served as Alconleigh, the Radlett family home, in the 2021 adaptation of Nancy Mitford's The Pursuit of Love . Home to the Cottrell-Dormer family ever since it was built, Rousham is one of the few great country houses that hasn't been given over to the National Trust or opened to the public. You can visit the beautiful gardens, originally laid out by William Kent in the 18th century, every day of the year, though the house itself is only open by prior arrangement. The house where the Mitfords grew up, Asthall Manor , which was the real inspiration for Alconleigh, can occasionally be visited during its biennial sculpture exhibition. rousham.org

Film locations UK

Haworth, Yorkshire

There are two reasons to visit Haworth – other than the fact that it is quite simply lovely; the first, it is where the Brontë sisters grew up , and the second is for the filming locations of The Railway Children in and around the picturesque village. We're talking about the classic 1970 film and any scenes of the children in and around the village were filmed in Haworth, while the station used for the most touching scenes is a couple of miles down the road in Oakworth.

Bridgerton filming locations

Painshill Park

The Netflix series Bridgerton has sparked a revived interest in all things Regency. You can see a full rundown of its locations here, including lots of beautiful houses in Bath, but we're fans of this delightful park in Cobham, Surrey, where scenes of promenading and picnicking were filmed. The park is a classic 18th-century landscape, filled with follies, bridges and lakes, perfect for all your Jane Austen fever dreams.

Film locations UK

Shere, Surrey

The picturesque village of Shere in Surrey has been used as a setting for multiple films, including Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (filmed in the church), The Holiday , and The Wedding Date . Filled with charming pubs and shops, including a lovely deli called The Dabbling Duck, and with plenty of countryside walks around the village, it's a perfect destination for a day out.

Harry Potter filming locations

Alnwick Castle, Northumberland

Scenes from the first two Harry Potter films were filmed at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, including the famous broomstick practice scene from The Philosopher's Stone , which was filmed here next to the Outer Bailey. The courtyards and gates were also used to film the students walking between classes.

Film locations UK

Lacock, Wiltshire

The village of Lacock in Wiltshire has been used for many a period TV programme, as its central streets are almost untouched by modernity. It has appeared as a mid-nineteenth/early twentieth-century village in Cranford and Downton Abbey , but this house has gained particular notoriety as the house in which Harry Potter was supposed to have lived as a baby, and where he survived Lord Voldemort's attack.

Film locations UK

Portobello Road, London

The reputation of Notting Hill was forever changed by the 1999 romantic comedy of the same name. We especially love the immortal scene in which Hugh Grant moons around Portobello Road Market trying to forget Julia Roberts, making these candy-coloured houses iconic in the process.

Film locations UK

Kenwood House, London

Hugh Grant needn't have worried as - in another scene from Notting Hill - he was soon to be reunited with Julia Roberts' character Anna Scott as she filmed a Henry James adaptation at Kenwood House . This glorious mansion sits on the northern edge of Hampstead Heath, its elegant white façade presiding the grounds to the south. The house is run by English Heritage and features an impressive art collection, a garden by Arabella Lennox-Boyd, and a really very lovely café. The perfect summer afternoon outing.

Film locations UK

Lyme Park, Cheshire

In the 1995 BBC version of Pride and Prejudice (which is still the definitive adaptation, in our opinions), this Italianate house owned by the National Trust stood in for Mr Darcy's grand estate, Pemberley. Lyme thus became the backdrop for Colin Firth's emergence from the lake and into the fevered imaginations of a new generation of Austen fans.

Film locations UK

Chatsworth, Derbyshire

Ten years later, in the 2005 film of Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, Mr Darcy got an upgrade to one of the grandest houses in England, Chatsworth . The seat of the Duke of Devonshire, Chatsworth is a beautiful place to visit. The late Deborah Cavendish (formerly Deborah Mitford), Duchess of Devonshire, revitalised the estate and made it a highly successful business, with spectacular gardens, art installations in the house, and even an organic farm.

Film locations UK

Castle Howard, North Yorkshire

Castle Howard has been a frequent location for films: it also stood in for Pemberley in the BBC's 2013 Death Comes to Pemberley , and interiors were used as a stand in for Kensington Palace in ITV's Victoria . But it achieved real fame as the location of Brideshead in the 1981 adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited , which starred Jeremy Irons. So strong was the association between Castle Howard and the fictional seat of the Flyte family that it served as Brideshead again in the 2008 version.

Film locations UK

Blockley, Gloucestershire

Fans of murder mysteries would be forgiven for thinking that England's most beautiful towns and villages are rife with crime - the colleges of Oxford have been positively decimated over several series of Morse and Lewis , and it's suprising that there's anyone left in the Home Counties as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Midsomer Murders . The pretty village of Blockley in Gloucestershire has proved fairly lethal as well, as the setting of the gloriously soothing Father Brown mysteries starring Mark Williams.

Film locations UK

Castle Ward, County Down, Northern Ireland

Another beautiful setting which has played host to murder and violence, the farmyard of Castle Ward was made famous as the setting for Winterfell in Game of Thrones . There's also a beautiful Palladian house to visit at this National Trust property, and you can book in on a Game of Thrones experience if you want to spend a day in Stark mode.

Film locations UK

Botallack Mine, St Just, Cornwall

When Poldark appeared on our screens in 2015, we were blown away by the beautiful shots of the Cornish landscape (not to mention the beautiful shots of Aidan Turner). As Ross Poldark attempts to restore his family's copper mines and his own reputation, the dramatic coastline of Cornwall becomes practically another character in the story. The abandoned buildings at Botallack (now in the hands of the National Trust ) stand in for Poldark's mines–a monument to the region's mining industry which died out at the end of the 19th century.

Legendary film locations in the UK you can visit

The uk may not come with all the glitz and glam of hollywood, but film crews keep coming back to the streets and fields of great britain. there’s a pretty sweet collection of film locations in the uk under its grey skies—and we’re not just talking period dramas., forget the tea and crumpets, these film sets are more about pints down the local, butterbeer, and martinis (shaken, not stirred)..

film sets you can visit uk

Ascot & Glencoe – Skyfall

With a whole host of filming locations in the UK and overseas you’ve probably visited half of the backdrops for the 2012 James Bond instalment, even if you don’t realise it. Two of the most interesting have got to be Ascot and Glencoe, after the famous racecourse was used as Shanghai International Airport and the film crew were “blown away” by the natural beauty of Scotland’s Glencoe. Interestingly, the Skyfall team were always scheduled to film in Shanghai, but rather than use the real airport, Ascot was covered with replica signs and logos, then filled with Chinese extras.

While we’re on the subject of all things Bond – there’s a new interactive visual that’s just been released showing some of the iconic Bond cars from over the decades put together by Grange and Motorparks . You can view it by clicking here

Castle Ward, County Down, Northern Ireland – Game of Thrones

HBO’s huge TV hit Game of Thrones quickly became a global phenomenon and Northern Ireland was home to many film locations in series one. County Down’s Castle Ward doubled up as Winterfell, where King Robert Baratheon first meets the Starks and you can walk the same path with the Game of Thrones Tour – complete with an archery experience on the same ground Brandon Stark practised in season one.

Warner Brothers Studio Tour – Harry Potter

The second biggest film franchise in cinema history is suitably honoured with possibly the most immersive film landmark in the UK. The Warner Brothers Studio Tour in London takes you behind the scenes of the film series, to see where the magic all began, with a showcase of sets, props and animatronics used in the motion pictures. Throughout the tour you can learn more about how the films were made, as you explore sets and exhibitions that preserve the fantastic work of the film designers, plus limited edition artwork, film reels and jewellery.

Duke Of Albany, New Cross Gate – Shaun of the Dead

Dubbed the Winchester Tavern for the comedy horror, the external shots of Shaun’s favourite local boozer were taken outside the Duke of Albany pub in New Cross Gate. Sadly, the only visit you can make here now won’t involve any ale or dry roasted nuts, because the former pub has been converted into luxury flats.

Osterley Park, London – The Dark Knight Rises

Also known as Wayne Manor in the 2012 Batman film, Christian Bale and Michael Caine moved into Osterley Park for a week of filming. You can visit this Georgian county home when it isn’t closed for shooting and visit the actual secret tunnel used to access the bat cave! Osterley was chosen as the new Wayne Manor after the former estate was burnt to the ground in the previous film and director Christopher Nolan reportedly “ fell for Osterley’s spectacular interiors ,” which you can admire for yourself.

So there’s way more to UK film locations than period dramas and you can expect to see the cameras rolling at these and other landmarks for years to come.

film sets you can visit uk

From dramatic coastlines to imposing architecture, it’s often the scenery of our favourite flicks that make them so special. Take a look at some of our favourite UK TV and film locations to visit where you can follow in the characters’ footsteps.

Bath – Bridgerton

Transport yourself to an era of regency with a promenade around the city of Bath, one of the primary filming locations of Netflix’s Bridgerton . Being a small city, it’s perfect for a self-guided walking tour: visit the Featherington house at No. 1 The Royal Crescent before heading to the Modiste (Abbey Deli to the locals). Cross Pulteney Bridge and follow Great Pulteney Street to be greeted by Lady Danbury’s grand mansion. Soak up the sophistication in Abbey Green square or the famous Bath Street, both frequent backdrops to some of the most iconic scenes, including the Duke of Hastings’ dramatic horse-back entrance.

Scotland – Harry Potter

Potterheads will recognise this dramatic scenery from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets , when Ron and Harry are in Weasley’s flying car. The pair soar over Glenfinnan Viaduct, which spans 1000 feet and sits 100 feet above the ground. In the third instalment of the iconic series, the train is stopped over the viaduct by Dementors. Head to the visitor centre where there is a short walk to panoramic views of the site. For an extra magical day out, catch the Hogwarts Express (The Jacobite to locals) from nearby Fort William that takes you all the way across the viaduct.

Cornwall – Poldark

In 2015, the brooding Ross Poldark rode across the Cornish coast and onto our screens. The series of Poldark follows a host of characters living through love, loss and war in 1783, all unfolding amongst captivating Cornish scenery. The Penwith Heritage Coast and surrounding areas are to thank for the stirring setting. Although Poldark’s Nampara is fictional, head to Botallack Mine to see ‘Wheal Leisure’, the Poldark family business, and the famous Crowns engine houses perched on the cliffs. Nearby is Porthgwarra Beach, the backdrop for many scenes including a fan-favourite in which Demelza watches Ross swim from the cliffs above.

Country Antrim – Game of Thrones

The captivating  mediaeval drama, Game of Thrones, takes place in mythical Westeros which is actually a jigsaw puzzle of stunning locations across Europe. It’s not hard to see why Northern Ireland is among them, with its spectacular coastline, mountains and glens. In County Antrim, the harbour town of Ballintoy became the Iron Islands, home of Theon Greyjoy, while the atmospheric Dark Hedges in nearby Ballymoney featured in season two. A half an hour drive west you’ll find the striking Cushendun Caves, used as the backdrop for the Stormlands and the setting for several iconic scenes.

Yorkshire – The Secret Garden

Staying true to its roots – if you’ll pardon the pun – both the 2020 and 1993 versions of The Secret Garden feature Fountains Abbey near Ripon. Sitting next to the picturesque Studley Park, the ruins of the mediaeval abbey provided the exterior of Misselthwaite Manor in the original adaptation. In the modern remake, the abbey’s ruins take centre stage, having been transformed into a vine-covered paradise complete with sunken pools. The UNESCO World Heritage site dates back to 1132 and has acres of gardens, riverside walks and follies to explore, as well as the stunning ruins themselves.

Hampshire – Downton Abbey

If you’ve ever watched enviously as the Crawley family of Downton Abbey enjoy their lavish home, don’t worry – now you can get a slice of the aristocracy first-hand. Wander through the hallways, dining room, drawing room and library of the show’s most iconic backdrop, Highclere Castle. Set within 1000 acres of parkland and gardens, the beautiful castle-cum-stately home was built as Highclere Palace in 1679. Today, it has been restored to the elegance and grandeur of its heyday, hosting the Downton Abbey series and films. You can follow the footsteps of Dame Maggie Smith and Hugh Bonneville with a guided tour, special event or general admission.

Take yourself around the Broadchurch Trail, which stops off at 10 locations within walking distance of each other. You’ll stop off at stunning sites like West Cliff, Jurassic Pier and the Harbour Cliff Beach, recognisable from the dramatic first episode. See if you can spot DI Hardy’s blue beach shack on the banks of the River Brit when you’re walking around West Bay.

Shere – The Holiday

Christmas may be a way off but if you want an early festive fix, visit the village of Shere in Guildford. After a house-swap holiday, Cameron Diaz finds herself in the tiny village for the holidays. Catch a train from London Waterloo and be in the idyllic Surrey gem in just over an hour to explore the quaint shops and charming pubs, set near the River Tillingbourne. Make sure to drop by The White Horse, where Jude Law and Cameron Diaz have a romantic lunch. The village church of St James also features in Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason when Renee Zelweger’s parents renew their vows.

Liverpool – The Batman

Not only is Liverpool bursting at the seams with history and culture, it’s now the backdrop for the newest Batman film. Opposite Liverpool Lime Street Station is St George’s Hall, a neoclassical Grade I listed building that doubled as Gotham City Hall for the stylish funeral scene. Gotham General Hospital was hosted by the Walker Art Gallery and the Waterloo Memorial statue can be spotted in the Halloween market scene. The city’s iconic Royal Liver Building was transformed into Gotham City Police Department, while the grand neo-Grecian County Sessions House became Gotham Courthouse.

Guildford – Gladiator and more

Spanning 400 acres of Surrey countryside, Bourne Woods have been a popular filming location for some epic films of recent years. In this ancient woodland, Daniel Radcliffe was chased by snatchers in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow: Part 1 while Scarlett Johannson and co fight their way through the woods in Avengers: Age of Ultron . The area is also favoured by Oscar-winning director Ridley Scott who chose the location for two of his films . The imposing landscape is the perfect stage for Russel Crowe’s bloody victory in Gladiator and the muddy WW1 trenches of War Horse.

EIGHT FAMOUS TV FILMING LOCATIONS IN THE UK TO VISIT ON YOUR STAYCATION THIS YEAR

film sets you can visit uk

Are you a lover of all things TV? The UK is home to some of the most iconic and quirky villages that have been a perfect filming location for period dramas and films

From Bridgerton to Game of Thrones, some of the most stunning castles and stately homes in the UK have lent themselves to the best shows on television over the past decade, and what better way to spend your holiday at home than exploring the famous landmarks?

As part of their Sunny Staycations campaign, the broadband team at Uswitch have rounded up some of the most picturesque villages and stately homes that have been used as filming locations for your favourite TV shows that are worth a visit while you are away.

So if you are ready to get exploring, check out the list below:

1. Bridgerton – Royal Crescent, Bath

film sets you can visit uk

Bridgerton proved popular among fans at the beginning of 2021 and it wasn’t just the Duke that had people loving the show. Set in London during England’s Regency era, the series had a fair few beautiful filming locations that you can visit while on your staycation this year.

Bath proved to be a prime location for the famous period drama’s first series, with the beautifully historic Holburne Museum being used as Lady Danbury’s home and the Royal Crescent acting as the exterior to the Featherington Home.

With so much beauty to explore, the prime locations of the city are worth a visit if you are in the area.

  Location: No.1 Royal Crescent, Bath, BA1 2LR

2. Game of Thrones, Castle Ward – Northern Ireland

film sets you can visit uk

The dramatic plot lines and the battle between families kept fans on the edge of their seats the whole way through, but Game of Thrones’ dramatic backdrops and beautiful locations had people around the world travelling to some of the TV shows most remote locations.

The show spent a few of its series filming in various picturesque locations in Ireland, including Castle Ward that was the home of House Stark, Winterfell, for seasons one and two.

The castle offers idyllic hillsides and gothic structures, along with a Game of Thrones tour that will make you feel like you are part of the show.

Location: Strangford, Downpatrick BT30 7BA

3. Sex Education, the University of South Wales – Caerleon

film sets you can visit uk

Did you ever think that Moordale High in Sex Education never quite felt like a school? That’s because the show’s famous set was actually filmed on the old University of South Wales campus in Caerleon that closed in 2016.

The coming of age smash hit show has seen eager fans travel to Wales and visit some of the show’s most iconic locations from Jean and Otis’s house by the River Wye, to Moordale High. With rolling hills and scenic backdrops, the show has more than a few dreamy locations you should visit while away this summer.

Location: Lodge Rd, Caerleon, Newport NP18 3QT

4. Poldark , Kynance Cave – Cornwall

film sets you can visit uk

Cornwall has long been a family favourite destination for holidays in the UK and is home to some of the best sandy beaches in England. But that’s not all it’s famous for.

The holiday destination has been a key filming location for the hit TV show Poldark including private beach, Kynance Cove.

The quiet beach has gorgeous blue waters that make you forget you are in England and sky-high cliff tops that enclose the beach making it that little bit more private for holidaymakers.

Location: Kynance Cove, Helston, TR12 7PJ

5. Peaky Blinders, Arley Hall – Cheshire

film sets you can visit uk

Set in old town Birmingham just after the first world war, Peaky Blinders has a number of pretty locations you can visit across the UK when you are on your staycation this year.

If you find yourself in the north of England, then why not visit the beautiful Arley Hall in Cheshire. The stunning manor house doubles as Tommy Shelby’s Arrow House where the library is transformed into the gang leaders study.

Location: Back Ln, Arley, Northwich CW9 6NA

6. The Crown, Belvoir Castle – Leicestershire

film sets you can visit uk

Do you want to experience a slice of royalty when on your holiday in the UK this year? Then look no further. The popular Netflix series The Crown has filmed in a number of beautiful castles and stately homes across the UK.

Stood proudly on the hilltop in Belvoir is the stunning castle and stately home Belvoir Castle. The famous building was used as a double for the interior of Windsor Castle throughout the series, so if you are ready to get lost in the history of the Leicestershire icon, we recommend visiting here while in the area.

Location: Grantham NG32 1PE

7. Vikings, Wicklow County – Ireland

film sets you can visit uk

Much like Game of Thrones, a lot of the iconic scenes from the Amazon prime show Vikings took place in the beautiful Irish countryside of Wicklow county.

Within a short range of the studio, you can explore the scenic mountain tops of Ireland, sit by some of the gorgeous lakes or wander in the fairytale-like forests. With so much scenery around, you will surely feel like a true Viking.

Location: Wicklow County, Dublin

8. Downton Abbey, Highclere Castle – Hampshire

film sets you can visit uk

Are you a Downton Abbey fan wishing to explore one of the gorgeous stately homes? Then what better time to do this than a day trip to the stunning Highclere Castle on your staycation this year?

The house in Highclere had already had many claims to fame before the show was filmed there, but it wasn’t until the last few years when the period show became big that it became such an iconic location.

Not only are the grounds and exterior of the building used for filming, the great hall and bedrooms are also a big feature of the show. So next time you find yourself in Hampshire, the gorgeous stately home is well worth a visit.

Location: Highclere Park, Highclere, Newbury RG20 9RN

Famous Movie Locations to Visit in the UK and Ireland

By Rebecca Murphy Oct 15, 2014, 03:00 am 0

14036395130_6db4fdd2b2_z

Movies are something that everyone has a connection to. They allow us to see the world and feel like we’re really experiencing it; all from the comfort of our own couches. But what if you had the opportunity to really see the world from a film perspective? In the UK in particular, hundreds of movies have been created that millions of people have viewed and loved. If you’re lucky enough to study abroad there or are just visiting for the weekend, why not take some time to live out your movie fantasies? So many cinematic works of art were filmed in the UK (and Ireland) that almost every tourist attraction was at one point used as part of a set.  And because DIY tours are always less expensive than going on a guided tour, we’ve debunked the mystery behind some of the most popular movie locations for you.

harry potter locations in the uk

Harry Potter An obvious fan-favorite is the Warner Bros Studio Tour , but if you’re looking to save some money, many of the Harry Potter film locations are free and easy to access (and it enables you to see even more of the UK instead of the inside of a building.)

Most HP sites in London are free to enter but a few are not open to the public. Free sites include: Millenium Bridge (attacked by Death Eaters), Leadenhall Market/42 Bull’s Head Passage (Diagon Alley/Leaky Cauldron), Lincoln’s Inn Fields near Sir John Soane’s Museum (12 Grimmauld Place), and King’s Cross Station (Platform 9 and ¾).

For a small fee, fans can also check out London Zoo’s Reptile House in Regent’s Park,  where Harry first discovered he could speak Parseltongue. For those who are a bit more daring, check out the lobby or peek through the windows of the Australia House (Gringotts Bank), which is closed to the public, or head to the town of Bracknell to track down the neighborhood of Picket Post Close (Privet Drive).

Outside of London/British countryside

The most famous outdoor HP film location is Alnwick Castle , which was used as the main model for Hogwarts. Interior Hogwarts shots were filmed at Christ Church College, Bodleian Library, Duke Humfrey’s Library, and the New College cloister. Several shots of Hogwarts were also filmed at several locations near Bath, including Gloucester Palace and Lacock Abbey. The pivotal scene at Godric’s Hollow where Harry became “the boy who lived” was filmed in the medieval town of Lavenham .

Wales, Scotland, Ireland

Several scenes were filmed at Freshwater West beach in Wales, including shots of Shell Cottage, Bill and Fleur’s home. If you make it to Scotland, be sure to take the Jacobite Steam Train through Glenfinnan Viaduct and Loch Shiel to see where the Hogwarts Express ran, or check out Loch Shiel, Loch Eilt, and Loch Morar to experience Hogwarts Lake. The only location used in Ireland are the Cliffs of Moher , which is where the sea cave was that Harry and Dumbledore visited to find the Horcrux. The cave is not real, however, so don’t go scaling down the cliffs trying to find it!

movie locations in the uk, where to go movie locations england

The Princess Bride We may be biased, but the general consensus here at The Abroad Guide is that this is the best movie ever. Not only does it have humor, romance, and killer swordfights (literally), but the film locations are also incredible.

The most prominent film site is Haddon Hall in Derbyshire, which was transformed into Prince Humperdink’s kingdom of Florin. This manor was also featured in Pride and Prejudice, The Other Boleyn Girl, Jane Eyre, and The Virgin Queen, among several other movies. Another estate used is Penshurst Place , which is where the swordfight between Montoya and Count Rugen was filmed. If you’re more into nature than castles and country homes, head to Derbyshire’s Peak District /Castleton, which is the beautiful countryside where Westley outwits Vizzini and Buttercup pushes Westley down the hill. Don’t forget about the fictitious shrieking eels, which can be found at Black Park Lake in Buckinghamshire.

Although most of the movie was filmed in England, the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland can easily be recognized as the “Cliffs of Insanity”. Feel free to reenact the sword fight between Westley and Inigo Montoya on top of the cliffs…apparently it happens a lot.

Wicklow

Braveheart Despite popular belief, Braveheart was actually filmed mostly in Ireland and not Scotland (it’s ok, we feel lied to as well). The majority of the movie was filmed within an hour radius of Dublin, so if you need a break from pounding down the Guinness, head to the countryside!

There were really only three important sites used in Scotland: Glen Nevis Valley (the village of Lanark where William Wallace grows up), Edinburgh Council Chamber (Mornay’s castle), and the Mamores mountains (Wallace’s trek after killing Mornay). These ten mountains are linked by a narrow path, making it possible to walk across all ten in a day.

One of the most recognizable sites in Braveheart is Trim Castle , which was used as the English town of “York” and “London Square”. Five miles north is Bective Abbey (used as the courtyards and the dungeons of Longshanks’ castle). Also near Trim Castle is St. Nicholas Church in Dunsany Castle (“Westminster Abbey”, where Prince Fey and Isabella get married). Curragh Plains between Newbridge and Kildare was the location of the Battle of Stirling Bridge and featured as the horse breeding area. Dunsoghly Castle near Finglas was used as the stunt double for Edinburgh Castle, where Wallace is taken by the English.

Much of the scenery and exterior shots were filmed in the Wicklow County area, including the “English” stockade near Coronation Plantation and Blessington Lakes (Wallace’s escape on horseback from Mornay’s castle after killing him, Battle of Falkirk was staged nearby in Ballymore Eustace). Many other movies were filmed in Wicklow, including PS I Love You and Leap Year. There are many tours that go through Wicklow, making it easy to see most of these places. We recommend Wild Wicklow Tours , as they make it into a really fun adventure (and they give customers a shot of Jameson at each stop).

where movies were filmed in the uk, movie sets in the uk to visit

Pride and Prejudice Although this Jane Austen novel has been made into several movies, we will be focusing on the 2005 version starring Keira Knightley, which was filmed in England. Many gorgeous estates were featured in this movie, including Groombridge Place in Kent (Longbourn, the Bennett family home), the Burghley House in Lincolnshire (Rosings, home of Lady Catherine de Bourg), and Chatsworth House in Derbyshire (Pemberley, Mr. Darcy’s estate).

Other sites to make brief appearances include Haddon Hall (the inn at Lambton), Basildon Park in Berkshire (Netherfield Park, where the Bingleys and Mr. Darcy stay), St. George’s Square in Stamford (village of Meryton, where Elizabeth meets Mr. Wickham), the Temple of Apollo at Stourhead (where Mr. Darcy unsuccessfully proposes to Elizabeth in the rain), and Stanage Edge in the Peak District of Derbyshire (the rock outcrop that Elizabeth walks along).

Don’t stop at just these film locations, as there are an infinite number to explore in the UK, including the sites for The Da Vinci Code, Love Actually, The King’s Speech, and several James Bond movies. Enjoy roaming around these fantastic sites and don’t be afraid to act out your favorite scenes!

Mischief managed: 14 'Harry Potter' filming locations you can visit in the UK

Madison Blancaflor

Like many longtime fans of the "Harry Potter" books and films, I rewatched the movies after seeing the recent "Return to Hogwarts" reunion special on HBO Max. It got me thinking: How many of these scenes were filmed on location, and could I see them all in one trip?

Want more travel news and advice from TPG? Sign up for our daily newsletter.

I've been to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Orlando , explored the flagship store in New York City and even planned a cross-country road trip during college to experience a "Harry Potter"-themed fall festival outside of Philadelphia . But despite all of these fun "Harry Potter" moments, I've never actually seen any of the filming locations in person. Lucky for me (and any other "Harry Potter" fan), there are numerous filming locations you can visit throughout the United Kingdom.

See which spots you'll want to prioritize by reading this roundup of the major "Harry Potter" locations in the U.K. While not an exhaustive list, it features all of the primary spots used during filming, so you're bound to feel like a wizard — even without an acceptance letter from Hogwarts.

There are quite a few spots in London that you'll recognize from the "Harry Potter" films, plus it's only a short trip from the city to the studio that houses many of the movie sets. You can book a number of "Harry Potter" tours — including a studio option that provides an up-close look at props, costumes and more — that will take you to most of London's filming locations, but you can also visit the various spots on your own.

Kings Cross Station

film sets you can visit uk

Kings Cross station acts as one of the doorways between London's Muggle and wizarding communities. It's where students board the Hogwarts Express on their way to the wizarding boarding school featured throughout the "Harry Potter" stories.

While there is no magical portal to Platform 9 ¾ that you can run through, you can visit two spots at Kings Cross Station that are special to the films. At the entrance to platforms 9, 10 and 11, you'll find a trolley "disappearing" into what would be Platform 9 ¾. It's a great place to grab a photo reenacting the moment when Harry runs through the wall the first time, though we don't recommend actually trying to run through the wall. If you want to see the actual location used in the movies, head over to platforms 4 and 5.

Fans of the car scene at the beginning of "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" can also check out the exterior of St. Pancras Church, which sits just outside the station. It's where Ron and Harry commandeer the Weasley's magical Ford Anglia for their trip to Hogwarts.

Leadenhall Market

film sets you can visit uk

Shots of Leadenhall Market — specifically an optometrist's office in Bull's Head Passage — were used as The Leaky Cauldron. However, this isn't the venue's only connection to "Harry Potter." The market itself served as inspiration for Diagon Alley, the iconic shopping and dining thoroughfare from the films.

Unfortunately, you can't find your wand at Ollivanders, bring home a pet from the Magical Menagerie or plan any magical pranks at Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, but you can still explore the market to get a sense of the energy mimicked in the magical version of this location. And you can shop for a Barbour waxed jacket to match Ron's attire in the first film.

Australia House

film sets you can visit uk

Australia House is home to London's Australian High Commission, but the building's magnificent interiors were also used as the setting for the entrance to Gringotts Wizarding Bank. Gringotts is featured throughout the films as the main banking institution for wizards and witches in London, including in one of my favorite scenes, where Helena Bonham Carter pretends to be Emma Watson's Hermione Granger pretending to be Bellatrix Lestrange in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2."

While the building doesn't permit visitors, if you arrive during a weekday you can take a peek through the open doors to see the chandeliers, arched ceilings and gorgeous marble floors that acted as the iconic entrance to Gringotts.

Millennium Bridge

film sets you can visit uk

In the books, the Brockdale Bridge acts as the pedestrian footbridge that the Death Eaters destroy during "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." However, the movie used the real-life Millennium Bridge as the filming location for the scene. The bridge also makes an appearance in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" when Harry flies over London with other members of the Order.

Thankfully, you can visit the bridge and walk across the River Thames without worrying about Death Eaters apparating in and ruining your day. The walkway is part of "The Queen's Walk," though you don't have to do the entire walk to experience the bridge. Head toward the river from St. Paul's Cathedral or walk to the river side of the modern and contemporary art-focused Tate Modern museum to find the entrances to the span.

Claremont Square

film sets you can visit uk

Tucked within a local square in Islington section of the city is the exterior filming location of Number 12 Grimmauld Place. Featured in two of the "Harry Potter" films, this mythical spot is the ancestral home of the Black family, as well as the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix.

Claremont Square is mostly residential, making it an ideal area for a quiet afternoon walk. If you want to see the inspiration for the location, combine your visit with a stop at Lincoln's Inn Fields, which sits about a mile southwest in Holborn, London's historic law district.

Related: An expert's guide to London neighborhoods

Oxford University and the surrounding area are home to many "Harry Potter" filming locations. The city is a quick trip from London — around an hour by train or an hour and a half by car.

At the university's Divinity School, you can check out the space used as the Hogwarts Infirmary in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." This part of Oxford University is also where Professor McGonagall teaches Ron and other students how to dance in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," easily one of my favorite scenes from the movie. (Say "babbling, bumbling band of baboons" five times fast.)

Duke Humfrey's Library, part of the Bodleian Library at Oxford, is another spot used throughout the movies. To see the mythical Hogwarts Library, you'll have to book a private tour, though Hermione would likely tell you it's worth the extra planning.

film sets you can visit uk

After you finish checking out the Bodleian Library, walk up to Holywell Street and turn right to get to New College. Here, you'll discover the courtyard and giant oak tree where Mad-Eye Moody turned Malfoy into a ferret.

Once you finish exploring this part of campus, walk about 15 minutes southwest to Christ Church, where you can pretend you're a first-year wizard climbing the staircase to the Great Hall like Harry, Ron and Hermione did in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." Also save time for visiting the Christ Church dining hall, which was supposedly the inspiration for the Great Hall set in the movies.

Of course, there are plenty of similarities between other Oxford and Hogwarts spots, too. Assorted hallways and cloisters were used throughout the films, and you'll even notice that the statues alongside the college buildings bear a resemblance to the ones Professor McGonagall awakens in the final movie. Bring your wand and recite the iconic lines McGonagall says after casting the "piertotum locomotor" incantation (though unfortunately, the statues likely won't jump down and march out the gates at your command).

Lacock Abbey

film sets you can visit uk

A little more than an hour southwest of Oxford sits Lacock Abbey. It's a common filming location for period films and TV series, including "Downton Abbey" and "Pride & Prejudice," though you'll want to visit to see Hogwarts' classrooms.

Head to the Sacristy room to see Professor Snape's potions classroom in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," then check out the Warming Room, the setting for Professor Quirrell's defense against the dark arts classroom. The latter features a special surprise: a giant 16th-century cooking cauldron that belongs to Lacock Abbey.

Before leaving, visit the nearby village of Lacock, which was used for two important filming locations: Lily and James Potter's house in Godric's Hollow and Professor Slughorn's house.

Gloucester Cathedral

film sets you can visit uk

Venture an hour north of Lacock Abbey to explore Gloucester Cathedral, where scenes for three "Harry Potter" movies were filmed.

Make your way to the north side of the Gloucester Cathedral cloisters to see one of the places where the troll rampages in the first film. After, visit the south side of the cathedral to check out the Gryffindor corridor and the entrance to the Gryffindor common room (sans the singing portrait of The Fat Lady who guarded Gryffindor Tower). You'll also find the hallway where the bloody writing declaring the chamber of secrets had been opened was discovered in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets."

Don't be surprised if other parts of the cathedral look familiar. The property also makes an appearance as various hallways in Hogwarts throughout the films.

Freshwater West

film sets you can visit uk

A few hours west of Gloucester Cathedral along the Pembrokeshire Coast of Wales lies Freshwater West beach, the serene setting for one of the "Harry Potter" series' most heartbreaking moments: the death of Dobby.

Here you'll see where the loyal house elf died in Harry's arms at the end of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1." The beach also serves as the opening setting for the final "Harry Potter" film.

While the Shell Cottage, where Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour lived, was built on location at Freshwater West, it was demolished after filming. Dobby's gravesite is also no longer marked. However, this stunning spot is worth the detour, even without those recognizable film features.

Malham Cove

film sets you can visit uk

Once you've gotten your fill of the sun, sand and sea, continue several hours northeast to Malham Cove in Yorkshire Dales National Park. You'll recognize this large, curved limestone formation from "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1." Specifically, the top of this impressive natural wonder is where Harry and Hermione camp while on the run from Voldemort as they hunt Horcruxes.

During your visit, trek the cove's walking trail, a relatively easy hike that's about a mile each way. Or, if you're up for the challenge, opt for the steep climb to the top of the cove's waterfall to see the actual filming location.

Durham Cathedral

Another two hours northeast of Malham Cove will bring you to Durham, England, home of Durham Cathedral. Step inside the cathedral's Chapter House to discover the setting for Professor McGonagall's classrooms. Walk around the grounds, too, to catch a glimpse of other locations used for various memorable moments in the earlier films, such as when Harry releases Hedwig in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and when Ron's slug curse backfires on him in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets."

Alnwick Castle

film sets you can visit uk

Travel another hour north to discover one of the most famous sites in the "Harry Potter" films: Alnwick Castle.

Known in the movies as Hogwarts, the castle was used for many shots in the first two movies. The property's courtyards and baileys served as the backdrop for a variety of scenes with Hogwarts students, including when Ron crashed the Weasley's flying car in the Inner Bailey. Additionally, you'll recognize the castle's main gate, the Lion Arch, as the place where Harry, Ron and Hermione leave and return to Hogwarts during visits to Hagrid's hut.

However, the most notable landmark at Alnwick Castle is the Outer Bailey, where Madam Hooch taught that first broomstick lesson (and where we were introduced to Oliver Wood while Harry first learned about Quidditch). You can actually participate in broomstick training lessons at the castle — the entrance fee covers the activity, plus access to an exhibit about "Downton Abbey," which was also filmed here. There's also a guided tour that will give you a behind-the-scenes look at what it was like having "Harry Potter" filmed at Alnwick Castle.

Unfortunately, the property isn't open year-round. At the time of writing, the castle is closed to visitors for the winter season. It reopens on March 25, 2022. You'll want to book your tickets and time slot in advance — slots are limited due to COVID-19, and they go quickly.

Glenfinnan Viaduct

film sets you can visit uk

Easily the most picturesque filming location in the U.K., the Glenfinnan Viaduct is best known for its role as the structure on top of which the Hogwarts Express transports students to and from Hogwarts. Located in the western part of the Scottish Highlands, a mountainous region in northwest Scotland, the viaduct offers breathtaking views of the Scottish countryside.

There are two ways you can experience this filming location. If you drive north of Fort William, there's a place to park and take a quick walk up the valley to a lookout spot where you can see the viaduct in all its glory. However, fans who truly wish to live out their Hogwarts Express dreams will want to book a trip on the Jacobite. This steam train provides a front-row view of the same scenery Harry and his classmates saw on their way to Hogwarts as it travels between Fort William and Mallaig.

Glencoe, Scotland

film sets you can visit uk

No trip to the beautiful Scottish Highlands would be complete without a visit to Glencoe, one of Scotland's most well-known areas. If you're a fan of the outdoors, it's a great spot to explore.

"Harry Potter" enthusiasts will appreciate seeing the area that was featured throughout the movies. Hogwarts Quidditch matches were filmed in front of Glen Nevis, and you'll recognize Steall Falls as the location of some parts of the Triwizard Tournament in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire." Additionally, Glencoe serves as the backdrop for Hagrid's hut in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban."

Fans of the TV series "Outlander" will also recognize this location, as it has appeared in many scenes for that series, too.

Bottom line

While seeing all of these locations in one trip will require multiple days and your own set of wheels, many are clustered close to each other, making it possible to visit a few regardless of where your trip to the U.K. takes you. All of the Oxford, Lacock Abbey and Gloucester filming locations are doable during a day trip from London. Durham Cathedral and Alnwick Castle are easy to see in the same day and can be combined with a day trip to Malham Cove. If you're planning on checking out Edinburgh or Glasgow, you'll find Glencoe and the Glenfinnan Viaduct a few hours away by the coast, and you could visit both on the way to Scotland's gorgeous offshore islands.

With a bit of luck, I'll be heading to the U.K. this year for my own version of a DIY "Harry Potter" film tour, though I plan to mix in a few spots from "Pride & Prejudice" while I'm there, too. London, especially, has plenty of excellent points hotels , so I'll be able to relive as many of these iconic movies' scenes as I can while sticking to a budget.

By Brad Young, Money team

As exam season approaches, some parents are putting hundreds of pounds aside to reward their children if they achieve certain grades.

While some parents lambasted the idea as "absolute potatoes", others told Sky News they saw their children's focus increase after offering up to £250 for the top results.

Among them was Sarah Cook, 45, from Dorset, who said cash incentives had improved her eldest daughter's concentration at GCSEs and she promised her youngest, Merryn, the same offer: £100 for a 9, 8 or 7 (A*/A in old money), £50 for a 6 or 5 (B) or £20 for a 4 (C).

"We were definitely all for it and happy to pay up based on achievement. I think it reflects real life as well - if you do well in your job, you tend to get paid more," Ms Cook said.

Merryn, 13, added: "I think it is better for the motivation and for that extra encouragement to get the highest you possibly can and to push yourself more."

Robert Gidney, from Norfolk, said his 14-year-old son's results had improved by a grade since the family decided on reward money: £250 for a grade 9, reduced by £50 for each lower grade, with no reward for grades below 5.

"He seems to be concentrating a lot more on it. He has been studying a lot more and putting a lot more effort in."

He admitted the practice might not be for everyone - something mother of two Sarah Paterson, 57, from Cheshire, would agree with.

"Never in a million years," she said, recalling how her children, now aged 26 and 37, would protest that their friends were being offered cash rewards.

"It's absolute potatoes. What are you setting you kids up for there?

"If they are going to academic, they are going to be academic. Life is about self-motivation."

What the psychologists say

External motivators like money can help children focus in the short term, but they "eventually kill off intrinsic motivation", said Dr Cath Lowther, general secretary of the Association of Educational Psychologists.

She said all children were intrinsically interested in learning, but regular external incentives "erode the engines of motivation" that cause them to find joy in learning or set and achieve their own goals.

It could also cause conflict and jealousy in some schools, with "children in that classroom who can't afford breakfast".

There is already too much pressure on children, said Dr Emma Citron, consultant clinical psychologist and chartered member of the British Psychological Society.

They are already trying to catch up after the pandemic and taking exams that could determine if they get a university place, she said.

"I just think that it's sending all the wrong messages as parents. You're adding to their pressure and actually, more importantly, changing the dynamic between you and your children.

"You're making it conditional on outcome, on reward, rather than what we know to be good, which is unconditional approval and validation."

Parents ought to be "quietly supportive" and act in a pastoral capacity, she said.

Teachers split on the practice

Charlotte, a biology teacher at a private school, who did not wish to give her last name, said approximately 20% of a given year group were offered cash incentives by their parents.

The educator of 30 years said those children often found academia harder, misbehaved or hadn't put in much work before exam season.

"It's not that much fun, revising, it's pretty dull, so I think anything that is an incentive is probably a good thing."

She said her children, now adults, were not offered cash, adding they had dyslexia and dyspraxia.

"They knew that what we required was just for them to do their best," she said.

A 26-year-old teacher at a state school in Reading said she hadn't found cash incentives were common during her four years as a teacher, but she was offered money by her parents when she took exams.

"I think sometimes it could be effective, but it could put more pressure on the pupil and I don't know if it's healthy," said the teacher, who did not wish to be named.

"They are going to feel disappointed if they don't get the grades no matter what."

Dr Lowther said cash incentives spoke to a wider problem with the British schooling system, where external motivators are built in from the start, rather than practices that foster intrinsic motivators like autonomy and connection to others.

From gold stars at reception to narrow choices in the national curriculum, schools focus on extrinsic incentives, she said.

"It would be great if there could be some real thinking about the curriculum and getting science behind how it's developed and how it's implemented," she said.

Each week hundreds of our readers share their thoughts on the things we've been covering in the Money blog.

This week's comments have been dominated by these topics...

  • Our feature on renting your home out to celebrities;
  • Wednesday's inflation announcement;
  • Changes to American Express cards;
  • The prospect of child-free pubs.

We learnt on Wednesday that inflation had eased to 3.2% from 3.4% in March.

Many readers said they felt no difference in their wallets after the announcement, with these two comments summing up the general mood...

It definitely does not feel like inflation is coming down. And isn't that what really matters, especially with elections coming up. These figures will feel like fake news to the majority of people. oellph
We're told inflation had fallen however the prices at the tills still remain unchanged. A pint is sold at £6-7, the weekly shop has reduced somewhat but only slightly, petrol and diesel prices are back on the rise and everyone is struggling to pay their bills and save money. Reggie

Others looked towards the summer's expected interest rate drop...

A double-edged sword here. As interest rates go down, so will the value of sterling. So up go the costs of imports. kinlochdavid

Big money rentals for the stars

We got dozens of comments last weekend from hopeful readers with properties they thought would be perfect for a film set after our feature...

I live in Wales... I have a small two-bed, with a mountain and woods behind. Any good? Marc
I'm happy to let stars use my house for filming Pardeep ahluwalia
I have a beautiful period property full of antique furniture. I don’t live in part of it and a film crew could use it for filming and change it as they wished Margo
How would I go about letting my house out to film crews? Mia Foster

As our feature set out, parking, easy-going neighbours and having one large room for equipment help make your house an attractive prospect for filming.

Much of the industry is based in London but, between them, the three agencies contacted by the Money team for the feature have organised filming in Manchester, Birmingham, the Midlands, the Home Counties and coastal areas.

Others were less keen on the idea...

I wouldn't let them anywhere near my house I've seen the state they leave them in Gary pledger

Child-free pubs

Another talking point this week was whether kids should be allowed into pubs - after one unnamed boozer went viral online for a sign declaring it was "dog friendly" and "child-free".

Lots of social media users were upset by the idea...

But many of our readers agreed:

Kids should NOT be allowed in pubs. It's an adult pass time. If I go for a drink, I expect peace and quiet, not people's brats running riot. Linda
All pubs used to be child-free. What's the problem? Wilco
There should be more child-free pubs, only places like a Beefeater or a Toby Carvery should be allowed children in. We have pubs/working men's clubs in our village where there is nothing for children to do or play with. These types of pubs are not places for children. Claire

American Express changes

From November, the amount BA Amex and BA Amex Premium Plus cardholders will need to spend every year to get "two-for-one" companion vouchers will rise to £15,000.

American Express is also increasing the annual fee for its Amex Premium Plus card from £250 to £300 - an inflation-busting 20% increase.

It's safe to say the change went down badly with some of our readers...

Does anyone really think paying over £600 per year for an American Express Platinum card is good value? They must be absolutely nuts!!!! Big Daddy Smooth
These increases from Amex are outrageous and totally unacceptable. I will be cutting up my card and sending it back. OutragedAmex

A spokesman for Amex said the companion voucher "remains an industry-leading credit card benefit", while both cards "continue to provide great value for customers".

On Wednesday, we found out that inflation has eased to 3.2%  from 3.4% when the Office for National Statistics released the latest data.

Economists had predicted the figure, which covers the month of March, would fall to 3.1%.

It's important to remember that this doesn't mean prices are coming down - they are just rising slower.

All eyes will now turn to decision-makers at the Bank of England as they prepare to consider cutting interests rates next month.

You can read more on that here ...

A day earlier, the ONS released its latest data on wage growth.

Wages excluding bonuses grew by 6% in the three months to the end of February, compared with the same period a year ago.

A Reuters poll of economists had predicted wage growth would slow to 5.8% from 6.1% in November to January.

The figures, while welcome on the face of it for struggling households, made for worrying reading at the Bank of England, which is assessing the timing for a long-awaited interest rate cut in its battle against inflation.

We also got a warning from the RAC and AA after government data showed petrol prices had risen by 8p since the start of the year.

The two companies said the price at the pump could go well above 150p a litre .

During this week alone, the cost has gone up by 1.6p - there has not been a sharper weekly rise since August 2023.

Average pump prices for diesel have also increased to 157.5p, the highest since November 2023.

"With increased tensions in the Middle East, the cost of oil is only likely to go up, which could push petrol well above 150p a litre," RAC fuel price spokesman Simon Williams said.

This was echoed by AA fuel price spokesman Luke Bosdet, who said pump prices were climbing towards the point "drivers fear".

"It is a psychological shock that shouts out from the price boards each time motorists drive past," he said.

Tesla has recalled more than 3,800 of its Cybertruck models following complaints that the accelerator pedal is at risk of getting stuck, US regulators have announced.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had contacted the carmaker, founded and run by Elon Musk, about the issue earlier in the week.

That was after a video came to light, on the billionaire entrepreneur's X platform and TikTok, showing how a rubber cover attached to the accelerator could come loose, pinning the pedal down.

It has since been watched millions of times on both platforms.

Meta's AI has told a Facebook user it has a disabled child that was part of a New York gifted and talented programme.

An anonymous parent posted in a private parenting group, asking for advice on which New York education programme would suit their child.

They described the child as '2e' which stands for twice-exceptional and means they have exceptional ability and also a disability.

"Does anyone here have experience with a '2e' child in any of the NYC G&T [Gifted & Talented] programs?" the user asked.

"Would love to hear your experience, good or bad or anything in between."

Instead of getting a response from another parent, Meta's AI replied.

"I have a child who is also 2e and has been part of the NYC G&T program," it began.

People who are fit to work but do not accept job offers will have their benefits taken away after 12 months, the prime minister has pledged.

Outlining his plans to reform the welfare system if the Conservatives win the next general election, Rishi Sunak said "unemployment support should be a safety net, never a choice" as he promised to "make sure that hard work is always rewarded".

Mr Sunak said his government would be "more ambitious about helping people back to work and more honest about the risk of over-medicalising the everyday challenges and worries of life" by introducing a raft of measures in the next parliament.

Building society reforms - backed by MPs - could help people trying to get on to the property ladder.

The Building Societies Act 1986 (Amendment) Bill is closer to becoming law after its third reading was unopposed in the Commons.

The idea is to expand societies' lending capacity via modernisation.

Tory MP Peter Gibson the bill would help with "cutting red tape" and removing "outdated bureaucratic governance systems not faced by the big banks".

It follows a government consultation which looked at how to allow building societies to "compete on a more level playing field with banks".

The bill is government-backed and Labour is behind it too, saying the changes will support "more working people to become homeowners".

Labour's Julie Elliott, the bill's sponsor, said: "It is important to acknowledge that whilst the housing sector has recovered significantly since the record low mortgage approvals during the COVID pandemic, approvals currently are still below that which we saw before the pandemic.

"That is why I think a bill like this, which gives more choice to the building society sector to operate in the interests of its members, is a good thing."

Treasury minister Gareth Davies offered the government's support and said the bill would help ensure the "future growth and success" of the building society sector.

Labour's shadow Treasury minister Darren Jones said building societies "direct a significant proportion of their lending to first-time buyers" and the bill "could unlock significant additional lending capacity".

The bill will undergo further scrutiny in the House of Lords.

There was a worse than expected performance for retail sales last month, defying predictions of a consumer-led pick up from recession for the UK economy.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported sales volumes were flat in March, following an upwardly revised figure of 0.1% for the previous month.

It said sales at non-food stores helped offset declines at supermarkets.

Sales of fuel rose by 3.2%.

ONS senior statistician Heather Bovill said of the overall picture: "Retail sales registered no growth in March.

"Hardware stores, furniture shops, petrol stations and clothing stores all reported a rise in sales.

"However, these gains were offset by falling food sales and in department stores where retailers say higher prices hit trading.

"Looking at the longer-term picture, across the latest three months retail sales increased after a poor Christmas."

While the performance will not damage the  expected exit from recession  during the first quarter of the year, it suggests that consumers are still carefully managing their spending.

While the  cost of living crisis  - exacerbated by the  Bank of England's interest rate rises  to push  inflation  down - has severely damaged budgets, wage growth has been rising at a faster pace than prices since last summer.

Separate ONS data this week has shown the annual rate of inflation at 3.2% - with wages growing at a rate of 6% when the effects of bonuses are stripped out.

Economists widely believe consumer spending power will win through as the year progresses, despite borrowing costs remaining at elevated levels.

"Misleading" labelling in some supermarkets means shoppers may not know where their food comes from, Which? has said.

Loose cauliflowers, red cabbage, courgettes and onions at Sainsbury's, peppers, melons and mangoes at Asda, and spring onions at Aldi had no visible origin labelling on the shelf or the products themselves, the consumer organisation found during research.

Only 51% of people find origin information on groceries helpful, a survey found.

Two thirds (64%) said they would be more likely to buy a product labelled "British" than one that was not.

Almost three quarters (72%) said it was important to know where fresh meat comes from, while 51% said they wanted to know where processed and tinned meat comes from.

Under current rules, meat, fish, fresh fruit and vegetables, honey and wine should be labelled with the country or place of origin.

"Research has uncovered a surprising amount of inconsistent and misleading food labelling, suggesting that - even when the rules are properly adhered to - consumers aren't getting all the information they want about their food's origin," said Which? retail editor Ele Clark.

"Supermarkets should particularly focus on labelling loose fruit and vegetables more clearly."

An Aldi spokeswoman said: "We understand that our shoppers want to know where the food they buy comes from, and we work hard to ensure that all our labelling complies with the rules.

"When it comes to fresh fruit and veg, we are proud to support British farmers and aim to stock British produce whenever it's available. Customers understand that at this time of year that isn't always possible, but we remain firmly committed to supporting the British farming community."

Asda said: "We have stringent processes in place to ensure country of origin is clearly displayed at the shelf edge and on products themselves where applicable, at all our stores.

"We have reminded our colleagues at this particular store of these processes so that customers are able to clearly see the country of origin."

A spokesman for Iceland said: "At Iceland our products are great quality and value for customers and we follow UK government guidance on food labelling, including country of origin."

A Sainsbury's spokeswoman said: "We have processes in place to make sure country of origin information is clearly displayed on the product or shelf and we carry out regular checks working closely with our regulator, the Animal and Plant Health Agency."

Barclays has been criticised for making the "ludicrous" decision to limit how much cash its customers can deposit in a year.

Ron Delnevo from the Payment Choice Alliance said the move was a "disgrace" and accused the bank of trying to force businesses to stop accepting cash.

From July, the change will mean Barclays customers can only deposit up to £20,000 per calendar year into their personal accounts.

The limit will reset every January.

It comes after Natwest made a similar decision last year, capping deposits to £3,000 a day, or £24,000 in any 12-month period.

"The decision by Barclays is ludicrous. This is plainly an anti-cash move," Mr Delnevo told Sky News.

"It is trying to take free choice from people. It's like it is saying, 'if you are using cash, then we think you are a criminal'.

"It's a disgrace quite frankly and there is no excuse for it. It's just wrong."

Asked if he was concerned other banks could follow suit, he said: "Definitely."

He gave the example of someone selling a car for cash. "How would you deposit the money into your account?" he asked.

Barclays said the change was being made to help it identify "suspicious activity".

"We take financial crime and our responsibility to prevent money laundering seriously," a spokesperson said.

"We have contacted customers to let them know that from July we are making some changes to the amount of cash customers can deposit into their Barclays accounts.

"We have set the limit at an amount that will allow us to better identify suspicious activity, while still ensuring our customers have access to cash."

The UK's estimated 23 million pet owners are at risk of a new kind of scam, one that took nearly £240m in the first six months of last year.

Scammers are now targeting the most vulnerable owners – those who’ve lost their pets.

Fraudsters are turning to lost pet forums and websites to claim they've found missing pets, demanding a ransom payment for their return.

Figures from UK Finance reveal this type of fraud – known as Authorised Push Payment (APP), when a victim is tricked into sending money directly to a criminal’s account - cost British consumers £239.3m in the first six months of 2023.

James Jones, head of consumer affairs at Experian, has some tips on how to avoid the scam...

  • Never pay the ransom – If someone is demanding a large sum of money in exchange for your pet's safe return, call the police immediately. Never pay the money upfront, as it will most likely be a scam. Be sure to take a step back and analyse the situation.
  • Examine the photos - is it a fake? – In an era where the use of artificial intelligence to fabricate photos is becoming increasingly commonplace, spotting a fake is becoming more challenging. But if you do receive a suspicious photo, make sure to take a closer look to determine whether it is in fact your pet. To do this, check if the photo has been taken from your social media profile and reframed to pass as a recent photo. You should also check for any signs of photoshopping. This could be the way the image has been cut, or the lack of shadows. It is also always helpful to get a second opinion – what you might miss, another person could spot.
  • Spotting fabricated stories – Scammers may share specific personality traits you recognise about your pet to convince you they legitimately have it in their possession. However, they may be getting this information from adverts you’ve shared on missing pet websites, or even details shared about your pet on your social media profiles. Be extra cautious and question their authenticity.
  • Be careful not to overshare on social media – While sharing information of pets on social media channels is commonplace, this can make them a goldmine for fraudsters. Always be careful about posting personal details, such as your address, pet’s name, or your location in real time. This is all information a fraudster could use to their benefit. Even if you have a private account, you still need to be cautious, as fraudsters have sophisticated methods for obtaining personal information.
  • Avoid using your pet’s name as your password – The easiest password to remember is your pet’s name, but unfortunately fraudsters know this too. Of course, you need to be able to remember your passwords, but it’s vital not to make them too simple. The ideal password should contain a minimum of 10 characters using a mix of letters, numbers and symbols. As a rule of thumb, it’s also best to ensure you are using muti-factor authentication, when possible.
