Trip Overview

Welcome to new zealand.

"Kia ora" & welcome to Christchurch, the adventure capital, and gateway to the South Island of New Zealand.

Learn about New Zealand’s cultural cuisine on a Kai Safari Tour. "Kai" means food in Māori language. You'll be taken on a food tour in Christchurch by a local Māori guide who will give you a glimpse into the local and New Zealand's culinary scene.

Close out your first day in New Zealand and get ready for your upcoming adventures!

TranzAlpine Train Journey

Board the TranzAlpine Scenic Rail Journey, named one of the world's greatest train rides.

Experience the island’s most magnificent natural landscapes on a trip you will not forget. Have your cameras ready as you travel to the edges of the ice-fed Waimakariri River, climb the Southern Alps, and see hundreds of miles of native beach forest.

Upon arrival, your Trip Leader will guide you through Franz Josef. Stop for a hike through the temperate rainforest and soak in the sights of the Wild West Coast by foot.

Get settled into your accommodations and walk through the small mountain town on your way to a delicious group dinner.

Experience Glacier Country

Enjoy a cup of coffee in New Zealand’s stunning Glacier Country.

Depart on a group hike through glacier-formed valley with incredible views of this spectacular world heritage area.

Take advantage of our #bucketlist optional activities like the guided Heli-hike. Those who choose this adventure will chopper and hike the magnificent Franz Josef glacier. You can also jump out of a plane, ride an ATV, kayak Franz Josef’s glaciers, or opt for one of several free hikes in the region.

Wind down and relax before dinner.

Glamping in Wanaka

A day full of picture-worthy moments as you experience secret spots on the way to Wanaka, a beautiful destination surrounded by towering mountains and a glacial blue lake.

Become immersed in nature as you explore waterfalls, lakes, and beaches on this scenic drive through New Zealand’s South Island.

Visit #thatwanakatree on the stunning lake and soak in the vibes as you're surrounded by epic mountain backdrops.

Arrive on the Wanaka lake for a night of glamping under the stars. Enjoy a DIY BBQ with your group at the campground.

Rob Roy Glacier Track

Arrive at Mount Aspiring National Park with your Trip Leader and experience one of the most scenic alpine hikes in the world.

Traverse through New Zealand's mountains, river valleys, and lakes before coming face to face with Rob Roy Glacier.

Test your nerves and opt to go skydiving from 15,000 feet as you overlook six lakes, the Southern Alps, Mt. Cook, and the South Island's longest river.

Via Ferrata Waterfall Climb

Prepare for an adventure of a lifetime! Today you will scale a waterfall using an "iron climbing road" called Via Ferrata.

No climbing experience is necessary as you venture into the heart of a waterfall, discover hidden pools, and cross suspension bridges hundreds of feet above the ground.

After an adrenaline-packed morning, you'll have the rest of the afternoon to explore Wanaka's boutique museums and art galleries.

Arrowtown & Queenstown

As you make your way to Queenstown, the adventure capital of New Zealand, stop at historic Arrowtown and explore this quirky gold rush village nestled alongside a sparkling river.

For the brave souls, you will have the opportunity to jump from the World’s First Bungee at the famous Kawarau Bridge.

Once we arrive in Queenstown, take a walking tour with your Trip Leader as you marvel at epic mountain backdrops and scenic lake views.

End another amazing day with a delicious dinner next to Lake Wakati.

Mountain Bike Queenstown

Discover Queenstown's off-the-beaten path wonders with a laid-back mountain biking experience along the shores of two iconic lakes.

Learn about the European and Maori cultures from your Kiwi guide, before being awestruck by the Remarkables Mountain Range.

In the afternoon, choose to parasail off a mountain cliff or take an exhilarating jet-boat ride in Skippers Canyon. Enjoy a scenic gondola ride and give luging a try overlooking the city of Queenstown.

Enjoy a final closing dinner with your group of friends and reflect on the incredible adventure you all had in this awe-inspiring country.

Goodbye New Zealand

Today is your final morning with U30X in New Zealand, you can depart at anytime. Take the morning to do some last minute shopping in Queenstown.

"I just got back from my 2nd trip with Under30. I can not say it enough.. this group is incredible. True authentic experiences in some of the most amazing places. Under30 allows you to truly enjoy a new place without the stress of planning activities & transportation. Under30 also welcomes you to a great community, full of great people. I have had the pleasure of meeting some extraordinary people on both of my trips. Special shout out to Lindsey (my Bali trip leader). Lindsey you are awesome! Under30 is lucky to have you (as well as everyone on all of your trips)." -Joanna M

"Under30experiences has been such an incredible life changing experience! There's so many positive things about this fantastic group of people. That said, I've love to travel but it's not easy finding people to join you internationally. Under30experiences has allowed me to fulfill my wanderlust by having an array of destinations you can go and you'll meet like minded people from around the country that accompany you on these trips. The trip leaders are fantastic as well, truely the most caring and unforgettable people. The trips are very safe, organized and packed full of adventure from the time you step off the plan until departure. I've already been to Bali and Colombia and I'm excited for Peru, France and Iceland this year with the group. Additionally, what's nice about these trips, is you do them in just a few days if you don't have a lot of vaca and over a holiday. Definitely recommend Under30Experierces to anyone who loves to travel and needs great people to experience it with." -Ashley H.

"I wouldn't be the man I am today if it weren't for following my gut and going on the trip to Costa Rica. I have met so many amazing and influential people through my association with U30X. Matt And Jared and the rest of the team make trips that are 100% designed to bring a small group of likeminded people together so they can experience the world in a different way. I have been to Costa Rica, Belize and Iceland with U30X. I have also travelled to Lake Tahoe, NYC, Nicaragua, San Francisco and Amsterdam with people I have met through trips. Friends for life that I can count on. If you're new to travel, check them out. Pura Vida and Go Slow!!!" -Andrew M.

I feel really bad as I went on this trip a few years ago however, since the pandemic, I've seen images of NZ and it reminded me of my amazing experience. I really can't praise Flying Kiwi highly enough. Everyone from the staff who helped me with my online booking to everyone throughout the 3 week trip. You really feel like a family, everyone is so nice and welcoming. I have too many highlights to mention. NZ is one of the most breathtaking places I've ever visited. When we are past the Covid-19 pandemic please book a place and go. You won't regret it.

Day by Day Itinerary

Fly north to the beautiful bay of islands.

The sub-tropical region of the Bay of Islands is a stunning Maritime Park with 144 islands, secluded bays, and an abundance of marine life including marlin, whales, penguins, dolphins, gannets and many other species. Being somewhat sheltered, the area is ideal for yachting, fishing, kayaking and diving. Rolling countryside, tidal estuaries, mangroves, sparkling and long silvery beaches abound. It is an area of considerable historical significance, and is the place where Maori and European signed the Treaty of Waitangi that joined them as one nation. Long considered the cradle of Polynesian and European settlement in New Zealand, the area is rich in history and natural beauty.

After arriving at Kerikeri Airport we will transfer you to your hotel and the rest of the day is free to explore.

Accommodation Paihia - 1 Night

Raglan (Little Hawaii) For Some Bohemian Tranquility

The ruggedly beautiful West Coast is where the mighty surf of the Tasman Sea tumbles and crashes onto vast black sandy beaches. The untamed natural beauty you’ll find here nourishes the soul; isolated and wild, you’ll feel worlds away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Famous for surfing, music, artisans, cafés and bohemian lifestyle’s, the Raglan community is set on the beautiful west coast. This is a relaxing isolated place where you can spend time at one of the many beaches swimming, surfing, kayaking and body-boarding.  Raglan is home to one of the best left-hand breaks in the world and is the perfect place to sit on the beach, eat fresh fish & watch the sun go down. Approximate Distance:   381 kms | 237 miles   Total Driving Time: 5 hours 20 mins Accommodation Raglan - 2 nights

Sunset in Raglan.

Surf, Learn to Surf or Relax on the Beach

Whether you want to learn surf or you have already master the sport, Raglan is definitely the place for you to come and enjoy surfing. Learn all techniques thanks to an innovative system of dry land surf board model that allow you to experience surfboard dynamics prior to entering the water. Whether in a group or individual lessons, the emphasis is put on fun and safety for a pleasurable and safe ocean experience. In just a few lessons, you can be taken from riding the whitewater to gliding along open faced ground swells!

If you're not a surfing fan then Ocean Beach is a fine place for a swim or a body boarding session. Lifeguards patrol the western end of the beach during the summer months - it's safest to swim between the flags.

Après-beach... And after beach time, the area offers plenty of possibilities, like a zipper line “Flying Fox”, hiking trails on Mt Karioi, mountain biking or glowworm caves or sip a great espresso. This lively surf town has an interesting creative culture and a wonderful choice of cafés and arts and craft boutiques.

Lost World Epic Caving Adventure - Waitomo

We consider this to be Waitomo’s best caving adventure and it’s dramatic! You start with a 100 meter abseil (330ft) into the depths of the ‘Lost World’ – this is considered the world’s longest commercial caving abseil (rappel) and it takes some fifteen minutes to get you down – and that is just the beginning! In the company of a very experienced guide, you start your journey.

Once down, you embark on a journey back to the surface through one of the worlds most incredible cave systems. Climbing upstream you follow a challenging underground river by whatever means, so its: swimming, climbing ropes, wading, exploring vaults the size of cathedrals, up waterfalls and monolithic stalactites, squeezing through tight cracks and jumping into deep black pools!

This is a full on caving experience and you need to be fit and you are going to get very very wet, but fear not you’ll be in the safe muddy hands of some of New Zealand’s most experienced guides. (minimum age is 15 for the Lost World)

Not quite your cup of tea: We have   a great selection of alternative caving adventure's from sedate glowworm viewing, black water rafting (floating on an inner tube through a cave) Just ask about our selection of beginner to moderate underground adventures. Approximate Distance: 102 kms | 63 miles    Total Driving Time: 1 hour 20 mins Accommodation Waitomo - 1 night

Waitomo Lost World

These Wilderness Cottages were built to capture the unique beauty of its surroundings. This farm is a fantastic example of what Waitomo is renowned for: subterranean caves with glowworms, rough limestone out-crops, lush green fields and friendly people. There are a number of walking tracks through our native bush. There are also a number of rock climbing areas which are mapped out for those interested.

Rotorua Rafting & Natural Hot Pools

The great thing about the Kaituna River is that it is not only one of the most popular whitewater runs in the country, with the distinction of being the world's highest commercially rafted waterfall, but it is also very scenic and takes you through the depths of a magnificent bush-lined gorge steeped in Maori history. The exhilarating seven metre drop of whitewater is the ultimate rafting experience in New Zealand! The Kaituna is classified as a grade five river because of its seven metre waterfall, however it is suitable for all people who are reasonably comfortable in water.

Too scary?  We have various rafting options available from Grade 2 to 5

Spend your afternoon soaking in Rotorua's  Polynesian Spa . Very relaxing thermal hot pools with onsite massage therapies.

Approximate Distance: 137 kms | 85 miles   Total Driving Time: 1 hour 50 mins

Accommodation Rotorua - 1 night

Rafting in Rotorua.

Geothermal Rotorua / Queenstown

Wai-O-tapu Thermal Wonderland Just south of Rotorua lies Wai-O-tapu, a wonderland of stunning geothermal activity and a really exciting place to visit. Wai-O-Tapu means 'Sacred Water' and it is easy to see why as the hot pools range in colour from turquoise blue, rich green and gold to an almost olive/yellow, make the water a dazzling kaleidoscope of natural colour.

The steaming vents with New Zealand’s largest bubbling mud pool while being surrounded by huge volcanic craters make the experience very other worldly - but wait, there is more... the Highlight is the Lady Knox Geyser that spectacularly erupts daily at around 10.15am (ish)

Alternate excursions in and around Rotorua:

Fly to New Zealand's Adventure Capital - Queenstown Accommodation Queenstown - 2 nights

Geysers at Rotorua.

Free Day in the Adventure Capital

It is well known  Queenstown is New Zealand’s ‘four season’ resort town and arguably the adventure capital of the world. There are certainly enough crazy activities here to challenge the teens – Sure jump off a bridge, try skydiving or roar down a river in a jet boat, but Queenstown offers much more as you can just as easily go fishing, golfing, gold panning, wine tasting, or boating. One thing is certain your family won't run out of things to do.

Recommended Queenstown excursions:

Jet boating in Queenstown.

Milford Sound Overnight Cruise

When the last day-boat ties up in early evening and the visitor’s leave a silence descends... An overnight cruise amidst the spectacular Milford Sound is a "once in a lifetime" experience and certainly one the most beautiful places in New Zealand. It's no wonder it was described by Rudyard Kipling as the 'eighth wonder of the world'.

Cruise the full length of Milford Sound to the Tasman Sea before anchoring for the night in the sheltered Harrison Cove. Then it’s of exploring with the nature guide in the ships tender crafts and kayaks spotting the resident seals, dolphins and penguins, before enjoying a delicious evening buffet meal in the spacious dining saloon, before retiring to your cabin.

Approximate Distance:   289 kms | 180 miles   Total Driving Time:   4 hours  Accommodation Milford Sound Cruise - 1 night

Milford Sound Cruise

Penquins, Seals & Dolphins

Dolphins such as Dusky, Bottlenose and Hectors are regularly seen swimming in Milford Sound , while lay about on the rocky shoreline enjoying the sun are the inquisitive New Zealand Fur Seals. Penguins are numerous throughout the fiords. Two species predominate, especially the rare yellow-eyebrowed Fiord-land crested penguin and the Little Blue Penguin.

Once back on land its time to return to Queenstown. Approximate Distance:  289 kms | 180 miles   Total Driving Time:   4 hours  Accommodation Queenstown - 3 nights

A cute seal.

Shotover Jet

The Shotover Jet is another adrenaline thrill you'll never forget. From the moment the accelerator hits the floor, your adrenaline hits the roof as you power through the Shotover River and deep into the Shotover River canyons! It's an amazing ride, as the Shotover Canyon walls tower over you, and your driver skilfully whips the boat past rocky outcrops, and skims around crags and boulders.

Shotover Jet

The Iconic Bungy Jump

Celebrate the end of your tour with a Bungy jump from the Kawarau Bridge.

Take the leap of a lifetime off the100 year old Kawarau suspension bridge. Kawarau Bridge was the first full-time bungy jump site in the world and is the place where adventure tourism began in New Zealand. The bridge platform is 43 metres above the Kawarau River and the jumper has the option of a head and shoulders splashdown in the river if you feel like cooling off.

How to Choose a New Zealand Tour

Choosing a travel tour requires careful consideration to ensure that it aligns with your interests, preferences, and physical capabilities.

Research Tour Operators

Start by researching reputable tour operators that specialize in tours for mature travelers. Look for companies with a track record of positive reviews, responsible travel practices, and experienced local guides.

Tour Itinerary

Review the tour itinerary in detail. Ensure it covers the destinations and experiences you are interested in, whether it’s cultural immersion, scenic beauty, wildlife encounters, or a combination of activities.

Consider the group size. Smaller groups often provide a more personalized experience and allow for meaningful interactions with fellow travelers and guides.

Physical Demands

Assess the physical demands of the tour. Some tours may involve extensive walking or more adventurous activities, so choose one that matches your fitness level and preferences.

Inclusions and Exclusions

Check what is included in the tour package, such as accommodations, meals, activities, and transportation. Compare the value offered by different tour companies.

Flexibility

Look for tours that offer a balance between structured activities and free time, allowing you to explore on your own or take a break when needed.

Travel Style

Identify the travel style that suits you best. It could be a leisurely-paced tour, an adventure-focused one, or a blend of both.

Travel Insurance

Ensure that you have appropriate travel insurance that covers your age and the activities included in the tour.

Reviews and Recommendations

Read reviews and testimonials from other travelers who have taken the tour to get a better understanding of their experiences and satisfaction levels.

How to Prepare for a New Zealand Tour

Obtain necessary documents.

Ensure you have a valid passport with at least six months of validity from your planned departure date. Depending on your nationality, you may also need to apply for a visa before traveling to New Zealand.

Check Health and Vaccination Requirements

Consult your doctor or a travel health clinic to ensure you are up-to-date with vaccinations and to get advice on any specific health precautions for New Zealand.

Pack Appropriately

Pack comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing, including layers for varying temperatures. Don’t forget essentials like a hat, sunscreen, sturdy walking shoes, and any specialized gear required for specific activities.

Learn about the Culture

Familiarize yourself with New Zealand’s customs, traditions, and etiquette to show respect for the local culture.

Plan for Free Time

If your tour includes free time, research activities or places of interest you’d like to explore during those periods.

I very much enjoyed the shout out to New Zealand, it’s been on my list for some time. However, I would have appreciated it even more if you could mention the tours that have no single supplement. I’m sure I’m not the only one who struggles to find group tours that are affordable as a newly single woman.

Sue

I live in Australia and have visited NZ several times. It’s a beautiful place and well worth seeing. Another way of traveling is on a cruise and there are several cruise companies that sail from Sydney or you can join one in Auckland. My husband and I traveled with Princess Cruises on a Christmas cruise a few years ago. It’s a perfect way to see both islands as they usually travel around the circumference calling in at most of the cities, where you can disembark and go on excursions to the mountains, lakes and wineries. The Maori culture is very interesting and the people are very welcoming. Of course the scenery is spectacular and the wineries and Te Papa museum in Wellington well worth a visit. Just do it…you won’t be disappointed.

Janne Perry

Thank you for promoting our lovely little country 😊 I’m in New Zealand and all of the tours above look fabulous! We’re a pretty friendly bunch and it’s a safe place for travellers. Lovely place for foodies to visit too! The weather can be very much ‘four seasons in one day’ so packing for layering is a good suggestion. Bring the swimsuit regardless of season as there are hot springs in many places and a LOT of coastline! Come on over…

Liz Robertson

I live in New Zealand too. I agree with Janne, please come and visit. It might be a long way for many, but you won’t be disappointed in any way. I have travelled the world and now I’m older I’m seeing more of my own beautiful country and just amazed at our diverse and gorgeous scenery. There’s something for everyone here, the pace is slower than many places and even our biggest cities are smaller than most large cities in the world. Febuary/March will give you the best summer and July/August will give you a mild winter in most place, except for our winter wonderland Skiing areas.

In conversation with Jacqueline Schadeck and Chris Corinthian, hosts of ‘My Money Mentors’

WABE is set to launch a new reality series called “My Money Mentors” on June 17.

According to a press release, the docuseries is meant to make financial literacy palatable and understandable for Millennials and Gen-Z. Throughout the series, financial experts Jacqueline Schadeck and Chris Corinthian will team up to lead young adults through financial milestones and challenges.

The show is set to premiere on June 17 with two 30-minute back-to-back episodes on WABE-TV. Two more episodes will play on June 18. The show is produced by WABE Studios as well as with support from Delta Community Credit Union.

Both Schadeck and Corinthian have very personal reasons why they wanted to get into financial planning in the first place. Ahead of the premiere of “My Money Mentors,” Rough Draft Atlanta spoke with both of them about their journey to finance and the making of the show.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

I wanted to ask you both – how did you come to financial planning in the first place? You’re both labeled as financial experts, but do you have a specialty in that regard?

Jacqueline Schadeck : I have been helping people with their money for the last decade now. I got into the profession because my mother was taken advantage of by a financial advisor, which caused her to lose everything including the house that I grew up in. I came across the Certified Financial Planner designation and decided that was what I was going to do. Now my specialty is actually in helping women retire, so a little bit different from the “My Money Mentors” focus.

Sometimes, we joke about me being a financial fortune teller, because I’ve seen the end, right? I’ve seen the retirement, and I’ve seen the legacy plays, and I’ve had clients pass before, and I’ve had clients that have passed wealth on to the next generation and some who haven’t. So there’s a lot of instances, especially with “My Money Mentors,” where we can see exactly where someone is and what they’re doing, and know the trajectory from that.

Chris Corinthian: I’ve worked for nearly 20 years in higher education with a focus on financial aid and financial literacy. I was a financial literacy coordinator for several years. One of the things that really got me interested in this subject and personal finance was when I was in my 20s, I worked a corporate job. I was taught, go to school, get good grades, get a high paying job, and then that’s the recipe for success, and nothing else – other than put something away for a rainy day. But the day after my son was born, my supervisor called me. She said, “Congratulations, Chris. But we gotta let you go.”

So my wife wasn’t working, I’m now not working. I have this newborn, and then two months later, we lost everything in an apartment fire, and no renter’s insurance. Everything that we did have saved up, we spent on baby clothes and everything that we needed for our newborn. Everything else we did have at the time, we lost in an apartment fire. I was unemployed for 11 months out of those two years – during that time period when there was economic turmoil across the country.

I got back into higher ed after that time, and I just started helping people build those foundational principles when it comes to personal finance, so that they can avoid some of the things that I wish I’d known. Things like setting up your emergency fund, how to really budget, some of the best strategies for budgeting. That’s why I’ve been on this path to help others. Not just kids that are going to college or coming out of college, but their parents too. I was a young adult at the time, and there are a lot of adults who make a certain amount in their income, but they still don’t know how to manage their personal finances. That’s why I really focus on the relationship aspect, or the mindset centered around money.

How did you both come to “Money Matters?” Had you met before?

Schadeck: It was interesting, we were actually cast separately. I don’t even love the word cast, because I feel like it’s docu-reality, so we’re just kind of doing what we do in our everyday lives. But it was interesting, because Chris and I had actually met at a conference a year or two prior. So we exchanged social media, but that was it. We hadn’t had any communication since then. So it was just interesting that we were both cast for the show.

Interesting, kind of coming full circle a little bit.

Schadeck: Yeah, and I think the way they found us was through social media.

The concept of the show is you two helping Gen Z and Millennials with financial planning. What do you think are the differences between advising younger generations versus older? What are the different obstacles that you might have to approach with younger generations?

Corinthian: I think one of the things is that technology can be a blessing and a curse. What I mean by that is that because it’s just ease of use for everything, right? You want to pay for something, you can just take out your phone – [imitates beeping sound] Boop!  If you want to purchase something that costs a lot of money, then you can just set it up on a payment plan – buy now, pay later type of thing. There are so many choices when it comes to money, that it doesn’t take a lot of steps to get what you want. If you have a lot of financial maturity, as I like to call it, then you can think through these things and really delay that gratification, to see if you really need what it is you’re trying to purchase.

That, combined with – you know, one of the episodes is going to talk about somebody who just lost their job unexpectedly, and how they had to start over, right? There’s one end, where it’s the ease of use when it comes to spending money, just spending everything that you have for maybe psychological reasons … or you might be trying to fill a void, there are various reasons. And then you have the other side, where it’s somebody who may have been responsible in that job, they lose everything, and now they have to come up with a plan to build it all back up to sustain their lifestyle. Those are just some of the things that we focus on.

Schadeck: I would say if you kind of zoom out, big picture, you have those generational differences. I think the biggest generational difference is the phone. It’s the phone, it’s the social media. There are a ton of studies that have been done that social media has changed the way that we perceive money. It has changed the way that we spend money, and it has changed the way that we’ve had a relationship with it. On the one hand, it’s been really good, right? We’re able to promote “My Money Mentors” and financial literacy via social media. But at the same time, we have a lot of people who are very anxious about their financial situations … We have to advise and work with [younger generations] a little bit differently than we would work with somebody like my main clientele, who’s age 50. They have different wants and different needs, and I would say social media has been a really big catalyst for that.

How was the filming process? Did you guys choose the people that you advised, or did you have a say? How was it behind the scenes?

Corinthian: Actually the production team and staff from WABE, they got together and they found the people that had the situations. What I believe they did was, they were trying to find situations that can cover a multitude of situations that were relatable to the masses, especially in Atlanta and the surrounding areas. Because if there were situations where they were too specific, then a lot of people can’t relate. But then, you may have or know somebody that lost a job before, right? Or, you may know somebody that’s a single parent of young children, and they’re trying to get their finances together. So when you find these stories that are common among a lot of people, those are the types of stories that are relatable.

We didn’t find them. The organization found them, and that’s what kept it authentic, I believe. Because we didn’t know them. They give us maybe a few bullets about their story and their situation,  and then we go in and we really analyze what’s going on.

You mentioned the struggle of trying to find financial situations that are relatable to a lot of people within the Atlanta region. What would you say are financial situations or financial problems that might be particular to Atlanta or its surrounding areas?

Schadeck: Atlanta is a unique city, right? So there’s quite a bit of history there, especially around the Civil Rights Movement, which we do highlight in the show. If you even go back to history before Civil Rights, just the whole history of Georgia and how it became a state, a lot of that nature is still ingrained in it today. We still see that today. We were able to highlight that on the show, which was exciting. We’re planning to do some more of that in the next season, to take that a little bit deeper.

[Georgia], on a scale of all of the U.S. stages, isn’t one of the highest paid … so I’m excited that we’re able to have the conversation of home ownership with a lot of people. That’s a conversation that a lot of Millennials and Gen Z have not been able to participate in, especially with the most recent run up. Atlanta has some very unique qualities to it that I think are making it a good show.

So is there going to be a season two?

Corinthian: You’ll have to wait and see! [Laughs] I don’t know. I mean, there are possible talks about it. We’ll probably find out right around the same time you do. We’ll see what the people say. A lot of times, when people give us their honest feedback on what the show is about and how they feel about it … that usually determines if we’ll move forward or not. But from what I’ve seen, trying to be objective looking at it – even though I’m in it – I really like the way that it was produced, put together. It really exceeded my expectations from what I thought it was going to be

What’s been the most fulfilling part of this for you, whether it’s directly related to “Money Matters” or your work in financial planning in general?

Schadeck: I would say the most fulfilling aspect of it is very closely aligned with what I do for work, but genuinely being able to provide support for somebody else. It’s the ability to be an advocate for another person, their financial advocate. Our mentees, I wouldn’t say that they are bad with money, right? I think you have a lot of people who are  not necessarily bad with money, but they need further clarification and understanding as to how exactly money works for them. It’s easy to get online and find a bunch of financial content, right? We can all find financial content, but who is there to put the context to the content. That’s my favorite part of this, being able to help people understand exactly how money is going to work for them instead of just on a general scale.

Corinthian: One of the things that I appreciated the most about this experience is being able to make a true impact. Being able to witness transformation … from seeing the “aha” moments to them actually getting some personal finance strategies that they can implement right away. This is not something maybe, two, three, five years down the line they can implement, but that they can implement right away. While we’re working with them, we can see them putting [those strategies] to work, testing them to see if what we taught them is actually going to work. When we see that, that gives us the greatest joy, to know that what we’re doing truly matters and this isn’t just for show. Pun intended [laughs].

And then through my experiences – going from being fired, to having a fire, to now being financially independent, being a full-time entrepreneur – has been a journey for me. So being able to relate to people on all those different levels … both Jacqueline and I have stories where we can relate to having the bare minimum, and then we can also relate to ways and strategies on how to grow wealth. Being able to reach people on that wide spectrum, I think, is what gives us a unique perspective and a unique approach. Because there are some who have just been on one side or the other, but I believe because we both have been through different journeys to be able to experience all those different levels of money, we’re able to really impact those on a different level.

Millennials and Gen Zers want human connection, so they're choosing travel tours with strangers to cure their loneliness

  • Intrepid Travel said young people are seeking immersive, non-traditional vacation experiences.
  • Millennials share more travel similarities with Gen Z travelers than previous generations.
  • Young travelers are prioritizing interest-based travel over destination-based travel.

Insider Today

Young people are seeking more human connection in the post-lockdown era, so they're embracing small-group travel.

Modern technology and social media apps have created a hyper-connected world, but many millennials and Gen Zers say the focus on screens has caused an epidemic of loneliness .

While New apps and local community groups are trying to address this "social distance" problem, some young people are choosing to book their vacations with strangers to find more face-to-face camaraderie.

Intrepid Travel, which organizes small-group experiences in over 100 countries, including Morocco and Sri Lanka, says it's seen a growing interest from young people in these kinds of group tours.

"They're prioritizing travel over buying houses, mortgages, and other expenses," Matt Berna, Intrepid Travel's president of the Americas, told Business Insider.

Group travel can be hit-or-miss with people. They can conjure an image of 40-plus tourists being led off a bus to an overcrowded attraction by their shouting tour guide.

But Berna said Intrepid Travel's focus on small group experiences is the opposite. The average Intrepid Travel group has 10 people.

"It allows us to travel like locals," Berna said. "We eat in small local restaurants. We stay in family-owned hotels. We typically avoid mass market tourism, hotels, or experiences."

It also allows people to form new bonds in a tight-knit setting, which young travelers crave, after the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Camaraderie in a group is so special because you make great friendships and share laughs and stories," Berna said.

Related stories

Berna said these unique experiences are popular with 18 to 29-year-olds — Intrepid Travel's core audience. Experiences are designed with young travelers in mind, offering more free time to explore on their own and more active outings.

Berna said Intrepid Travel began receiving requests from people in their 30s looking for adventures off the beaten path. Millennials traditionally valued experience-driven opportunities , and that desire hasn't waned with time.

"It became clear that millennials are aging, but the style they want to travel is immersive," Berna said. "If anything, they resonated more with Gen Z than the generations above them."

American Express Travel's 2023 Global Travel Trends Report found nearly 80% of millennials and Gen Zers respondents said they want to "partake in a day in the life of locals in the destination they are visiting," pointing toward activities like visiting local cultural sites and "hole-in-the-wall" attractions.

Airbnb, owned by millennial billionaire Brian Chesky , reported in 2020 that it also found that "immersive encounters" were becoming more popular with this generation, with interest up 102% year-to-year.

Older generations, Berna said, book vacations based on destination. Older travelers tend to plan vacations around conventional tourist spots — think the Eiffel Tower in Paris — because it's popular.

However, younger travelers don't have the same sense of FOMO — or "the fear of missing out" — that their parents do. Instead, they book vacations by interest.

At Intrepid Travel, that includes cycling enthusiasts traveling to Vietnam to peddle through the local sites. Experiences based on camping, festivals, and food are also options travelers can explore.

"They want to be a trendsetter going to the next cool place," Berna said. "It will be something new you can share with your friends, so you get the bragging rights. It's a bit more adventurous instead of following the crowd."

After conducting consumer research among its more than 300,000 travelers, Intrepid Travel formally expanded the young trip age range to 35 in February.

"Intrepid identified an opportunity to better cater for an expanded age range after experiencing a rise in inquiries from travelers in their early 30s wanting to join Intrepid's young adult trips," a press release said. "The company conducted extensive consumer research which showed that most travelers aged 18 to 35 prefer to travel with those of a similar age."

As for where travelers are going, Berna said South America has emerged as a top contender, with Peru gaining traction. The country closed its tourist attractions amid political unrest from late 2022 to early 2023, but they reopened in February 2023, according to Travel Weekly .

Another top spot is South Korea, which Berna said is typically more affordable than Japan. Intrepid Travel said they saw 172% increase globally in bookings to South Korea from 2022 to 2023.

"People want to go away and have these stories. They've settled back post-pandemic into feeling life, wanting to travel again, and seeking connection," Berna said. "Not just with other travelers in groups but with destinations."

Reviews of new zealand family tours.

I thoroughly enjoyed my tour. The guide, Isobel, paid very good attention to details and the comfort of her tourists.I felt safe and secure in the bus as Mark's driving was very competent and Isobel was delightful, patient and full of fun, a real people person. She and Mark worked well together, meal times, departure times and other important information was provided well in advance. Good provision was made for frequent stops to allow for toilet breaks and the purchase of refreshments. I liked their attention to time keeping. For me, everything worked smoothly which made the tour relaxed and stress free. I would highly recommend Isobel and Mark.
Isobel was an outstanding tour guide, full of amazing and interesting information, funny, down to earth, a wonderful story teller, competent, organised, nice to everyone. We've done two other Trafalgar bus tours and she has been our favourite tour guide. Darrell was a superb bus driver, always calm, navigating different terrains and weather with ease. We felt 100% safe in his competent hands. I liked that so much of the good stuff was included in the tour, e.g. the cruise on Milford Sound, and the wonderful ferry ride and dinner on the farm in Queenstown. It was fast paced, but we did cover an incredible amount in 8 days.
Everything was great with the except of the hotel accommodations in Wellington and Christchurch. The mattresses were absolutely awful. The beds were very springy and offered zero support. Woke up very sore each morning in those cities. Other than that, very very satisfied with Tour Radar.

"The tour went really well. The co-ordination of the drivers everywhere we went was amazing. They were prompt, kind and very helpful. I could not fault them. So whoever organises the tour did a great job. We were unaware that we were the only people going on this tour but once we adjusted it was great. I would like to comment on the huge distance we had to do to get to Piahia. If I could suggest maybe a stopover at another place of interest on the way would be great. I would recommend this tour if you want to get an overview of the North Island of New Zealand
