Four Spots for an Incredible Small Farm Experience

Indiana's farmers produce food for the world, so it is only natural that city dwellers are curious to get a taste of rural life! These four Indiana destinations each give visitors an incredible small farm experience.

The Farm at Prophetstown State Park

The Farm at Prophetstown

3534 Prophetstown Rd., Battle Ground; 765-567-4700; prophetstown.org

See and do:  With a focus on sustainability, homesteading, heirloom gardening and farm-to-table fare, this 95-acre site on land leased from Prophetstown State Park near Lafayette takes visitors back in time to see how typical Indiana farms operated in the 1920s.

The Farm at Prophetstown State Park

For the kids:  This working farm lets little ones participate in daily chores like feeding the animals, gardening and gathering eggs. Say hi to Bojangles and Hope, miniature horses who arrived on the farm by way of Indiana Horse Rescue.

For the adults:  The grown-ups in the group will appreciate opportunities to learn about beekeeping, canning, seed saving, sheep shearing and other activities through a schedule of workshops, demonstrations and events.

Take it home:   Pop into the Gibson Farmhouse to browse a selection of farm-fresh eggs, Berkshire pork, Hereford beef and seasonal produce.

farm tours indiana

Cook’s Bison Ranch

5645 East 600 South, Wolcottville; 866-382-2356; cooksbisonranch.com

See and do:  The mighty bison reign supreme on this wide-open northern Indiana spread. Partly inspired by trips to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, third-generation owner Peter Cook launched the ranching operation with just 30 head of bison in 1998. Today, the family tends to more than 500 animals.

For the kids:  Covered wagon tours pull right up into the herd, where kids can help hand-feed the bison as they learn about what it takes to raise and ranch these majestic animals. An add-on lunch option provides the chance to sample a buffalo burger or brat.

For the adults:  Chuckwagon-style lunches and dinners deliver a look at the ranch followed by a down-home feast of roast bison and classic barbecue fixings served up in the barn.

Take it home:  The gift shop sells bison meat and jerky, along with other bison-related items and accessories.

Trader's Point Creamery

Traders Point Creamery

9101 Moore Rd., Zionsville; 317-733-1700; traderspointcreamery.com

See and do:  Sitting pretty on 130 bucolic acres just northwest of Indianapolis, Traders Point holds the title of first USDA-certified organic dairy farm in Indiana. Guided tours illustrate how milk gets from the grass to the glass, and a scenic 1.5-mile hiking trail winds through the fields skirting Eagle Creek.

Trader's Point Creamery

For the kids:  Visitors of all ages are welcome to observe the activity each night in the milking parlor. Belly up to the Dairy Bar for ice cream, milkshakes, smoothies and other frosty treats.

For the adults : The Loft Restaurant proposes scrumptious lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch menus with an undeniable farm-to-fork flavor, along with live music on Friday nights.

Take it home:  With cheeses, charcuterie, honey, crackers, jams, chocolates, baked goods, coffee and tea, the Farm Store holds all the makings of a perfect picnic.

Goat Milk Stuff

Goat Milk Stuff

76 S. Lake Rd. North, Scottsburg; 812-752-0622; goatmilkstuff.com

See and do:  Pit stop off I-65 in southern Indiana and pay a visit to the 200 resident goats — and chickens and rabbits — on this Grade-A goat dairy farm near Louisville. The 36-acre property includes three goat barns, a soap production facility, a milking parlor and edible treats for sale.

Goat Milk Stuff

For the kids:   Baby goat encounters let little guests coo and cuddle with the youngest, most adorable members of the herd. Helpful tips to keep in mind: Wear clothes you won’t mind getting dirty and tie back long hair so it won’t get chewed on.

For the adults:  Get your “om” on with yoga classes held outdoors or in the barn as curious baby goats wander in and out while you hold your poses.

Take it home:  The Farm Store carries a fragrant array of soaps, lotions, candles and skincare products; the Sweet Shop is where to find delicious gelato, milk, yogurt, fudge and other goodies.

Seven Farms to Visit Near Indy

  • Posted By Katy Mann

Add To My Planner 18

Farms aren’t like parks or other favorite hot spots for play, they’re usually about the business of feeding and caring for people. However, if you are looking for a place for your children to learn about life and sustainability, here are seven farms for families to visit near Indianapolis. Most of these locations offer wide open spaces for kids to run and explore and others offer pretty plants and animals to look at.

Willowfield Lavender Farm is a great place to visit during the summer months. It’s a beautiful place to let the kids explore and to pick up a few plants to begin your own lavender garden.

Tyner Pond Farm  is a great place for your family to get near pigs and cows and chickens. The farmers invite you to visit seven days a week and bring questions about the animals. Shop for farm fresh meats in the store.

Fair Oaks Farms

One of the most unique attractions you will find sits right here in Indiana - Fair Oaks Farms. Visitors are encouraged to spend a day exploring, questioning and learning about the dedication and practices that go into food production on the Fair Oaks Farms campus.

Fair Oaks is a working dairy farm - and one of the largest in the nation - but also provides fun ways to learn with their Dairy Adventure, Pig Adventure and Crop Adventure. An on-site restaurant, café and the seasonal Mooville are also located on the Fair Oaks Farms campus.

Farm Adventures

Fair Oaks Farms Dairy Adventure

Dairy Adventure

Here, families will learn about the innovative process of dairy production. The adventure is interactive, educational and fun for the whole family.

Jump on the tour bus to see the cows in the barn and then head down to learn how they are milked as they ride around the carousel.

Before or after your tour you can climb on a magnetic wall, practice milking a cow and watch their 3D/4D movie. You may also witness the miracle of life in the birthing barn, where 80-100 calves are born each day then top it off with fresh, velvety ice cream at the Cowfé.

Fair Oaks Farms Pig Adventure

Pig Adventure

This adventure opens the doors to conversation between producers and consumers, helping visitors understand the practices that pig farms live by to ensure the safest food possible.

The Pig Adventure tour take visitors through the entire life of a pig, one of America’s most important sources of food. Inside the Pig Adventure young and old not only learn about pig farming, but have the opportunity to play in the Adventure Center and enjoy a challenging ropes course inside.

Fair Oaks Crop Adventure

Crop Adventure

The newest adventure to join Fair Oaks is the Crop Adventure. The importance of farming in America is explained within the walls of the Crop Adventure in fun, innovative ways.

Here, guests can burrow deep underground to see bugs and roots, witness the future of farming and discover how your food is produced - from seed to table.

The Crop Adventure is included in the cost of the Pig and Dairy Adventures.

Mooville

Fair Oaks Farms Mooville

Mooville is the place kids can catch some air on the “Dairy Air” jumping pillow, climb a 25-foot milk bottle and more. Mooville is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, weather permitting. The cost is included in the Dairy Adventure or a pass can be purchased separately.

Dining Down On The Farm

Farmhouse Restaurant at Fair Oaks Farms

Live Your Sweetest Life At This Awe-Invoking Indiana Honey Farm

farm tours indiana

Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.

Windmill Farm Tour

  • July 14, 2015

Meadow Lake Wind Farm near Chalmers

Driving north out of Lafayette on I-65, the roadway rises from the Wabash River valley towards the flatlands of corn and bean fields.

Something catches the eye just over the last rise, the tip of an immense airplane propeller, then another, and yet another appear just above the trees.

Fortunately, it’s not a jumbo airliner coming your way, it’s the beginning of wind farms with hundreds of wind turbines that stretch away for miles from east to west.

The first wind farms in Indiana were built west of White County in Benton County where economic development director Kelly Kepner noted the height of the columns for Orion’s 87 turbines is 240 feet. Add the height of the generator at 22 feet, and the length of the blades at 110 feet, and the total height is 372 feet from the ground up.

Energy supplied by wind farms goes a long way in diminishing the environmental impact of power production from fossil fuel sources and offers a valuable source of renewable energy.

Meadow Lake Wind Farm alone provides enough energy to power 138,000 Indiana homes. Like the companies in Benton County, EDP Renewables is also planning to add another phase of wind farms.

For a close-up look at a working wind farm, Kepner’s organization offers tours in Benton County.

“We do offer tours and our season runs from April to October,” Kepner said. “We have done very well with our tours.”

Kepner can accommodate different sized groups, with groups of 20, or the cost is $5 per person and $3 per child or student with an ID. Groups under 20 are charged a flat $75 fee.

Tours began in 2010, and since then more than 3,600 visitors have come through Kepner’s doors. She said tours have brought in over $16,000 in revenue that goes back into marketing and presentations.

“Most people have come out of curiosity, but we get a lot of schools, a lot of educational tours,” Kepner said.

Groups come from all over. One group of homeschoolers came from Washington State on an educational vacation, and others come from Purdue University classes and other institutions.

Tours begin with a video presentation developed by the tour leader–a retired teacher–with footage of sections of tower and turbines arriving on trucks, and aerial footage of power lines being installed. The video also covers overall information about wind farm developers, how the turbines are built, and how energy from the turbines is turned into power for homes.

The next stop is a hands-on look at a turbine blade outside the building before heading to the Orion wind farm. “They sign a waiver, then are allowed to walk up to within about 50 feet of a running turbine,” Kepner explained. “They can hear the sound the turbine makes, and get great pictures laying on their backs looking up at spinning turbine blades.”

Kepner said tours take about an hour and offer a great look into those spinning propellers in the sky in northern Indiana.

For information about tours contact Kepner at (765) 884-2080, or [email protected] .

While you’re there:

The Western Indiana Sustainable Energy Resource (WISER) group, a BioTown USA educational outreach, offer additional Wind Farm and Clean Energy Tours. Groups can select touring a Wind Farm, Liberty Landfill, Norway Dam, or an Anaerobic Digester site.
