If you are feeling like a slightly more in depth walk you can take the service road beside the beach to the Gorliz Lighthouse .

Barrika is located between Sopelana and Gorliz, known for its two beaches. The larger beach can be accessed by using a gigantic staircase that takes you down the cliffside. From the beach you can see one of Basque County’s most impressive geological phenomena, Flysch .

One Day in Bilbao: How to spend the best 24 hours in Bilbao

Are you looking at spending one day in Bilbao? This guide will help you discover the best of Bilbao in 24 hours or less.

Located in the Basque Country, Bilbao is one of the most vibrant cities in Northern Spain.

There are many reasons why you should visit Bilbao – its exquisite gastronomy, beautiful green spaces, rich culture and relaxing atmosphere. Along with Santander, Bilbao is an underrated city with so many things to offer.

It’s a great city to spend a day or a short weekend because you’ll have plenty of things to do in the city centre and its surroundings, so you’ll never get bored.

Bilbao is also a great stop if you’re doing the popular Camino del Norte route that goes through some of the most scenic coastal towns in the north of Spain.

If you’re ready to visit this city, then read this one day in Bilbao travel guide where I share must-see attractions, where to eat, the best accommodation and short and easy day trips in case you decide to stay longer in the city.

How to spend one day in Bilbao

The Guggenheim Museum is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Bilbao, and it’s the number one place you can’t miss when you spend only one day in Bilbao.

This museum and art gallery is home to unique sculptures and pieces of art. If you love the modernism period, you must add the Guggenheim Museum to your itinerary. You’ll find popular modern art movements like cubism and surrealism.

The truth is that you can spend between 3 to 4 hours in this museum. There are many floors and exhibition rooms to explore, and if you opt to listen to the audio guide, you’ll definitely spend a big part of your day there.

In addition to this, don’t forget to explore the surroundings of the Guggenheim Museum because you’ll find other impressive sculptures, such as the Giant Spider.

Also, just outside the main entrance is my favourite sculpture, the Puppy, the world’s largest flower sculpture! It has over 38,000 flowers, so it’s definitely impressive to see.

The museum is very popular, and it’s not surprising to see school trips or guided tours on weekends, so booking your tickets online is the best option.

📌 Tip : If you’re hungry, I highly recommend getting a snack at the cafe just outside the Guggenheim Museum. The cafe has outdoor seating, and you can enjoy a view of the museum while having a drink of your choice. For me, freshly squeezed orange juice is the perfect drink on a sunny and warm day.

2. Wander Bilbao’s Old Quarter

There is something about Bilbao Old Town (Casco Viejo), also known as zazpi kaleak , which is Euskara for “seven streets” – its beautiful and colourful buildings, narrow streets, and relaxing atmosphere makes it a fantastic place to visit.

Not only can you find some of the main attractions in the city, but also some hidden gems and less explored paths. My number one piece of advice is to forget about your itinerary for a moment and give yourself some freedom to wander.

Alternatively, if you prefer to have a plan or learn more about the city, there are many free walking tours in Bilbao city centre . The local guides will tell you all about the secrets behind this place.

3. Discover the beauty of Biblioteca Central de Bidebarrieta

The truth is I had no idea of this beautiful library before visiting the city; it wasn’t on my itinerary. However, while walking in the Old Quarter, the facade of a building got my eye, and I decided to go inside to check it; it was the main library.

This library is one of Bilbao’s hidden gems. It was built at the end of the 19th century and has a stunning eclectic French design. It’s one of the most important cultural centres in Bilbao, as it’s home to 100,000 books.

Whether you love reading books or admiring the architecture of a building, visit this hidden gem.

4. Visit the Cathedral

One of the most emblematic places to visit in Bilbao is the cathedral, known as Catedral de Santiago in Spanish.

This building is an excellent example of Gothic architecture at the end of the 14th century in Spain.

The cathedral has impressive architecture on the inside too, and one of the best parts is the cloister, where you can walk around while popping your head through the beautiful pillars and windows to see a small courtyard.

When you buy your ticket for Bilbao’s Cathedral, you also get access to San Antón Church.

5. Have a coffee at Plaza Nueva

Plaza Nueva is a lively square in the historic centre of Bilbao. It is home to many cafes, bars, restaurants as well as alternating shops. It’s a great place to enjoy the atmosphere and people-watch while having some food and looking at the beautiful neo-classical architecture of this square.

If you’re visiting Bilbao on a Sunday, there is a street market that takes place here. Local merchants sell anything from antiques, such as second-hand CDs and books, to coins, stamps and crafts.

6. Relax at Doña Casilda de Iturrizar Park

One of the main reasons to visit Northern Spain is to contemplate the landscapes and the beautiful green spaces. This beautiful park isn’t far from the Guggenheim Museum and is worth stopping by.

The park has many benches to sit down and unwind, a pond with ducks, and beautiful fountains and sculptures. While visiting this charming park, you can’t miss the Pergola, a great spot to take pictures.

Inside the park, there’s also a small cafe with outdoor tables that is often frequented by locals.

7. Immerse yourself in the football culture at San Mamés Stadium

I’m not a football fan, but when you travel with others, you may compromise and visit places that you aren’t very interested in. This was my case!

Having said so, if you like football, San Mamés Stadium is a must-see attraction to add to your Bilbao itinerary. The museum is quite big and very modern, even if Athletic de Bilbao isn’t your favourite football team, it’s quite interesting learning how this football club is different from others in Spain.

In addition, it’s surprising how locals are so passionate about the football team, and if there’s a match going on, there’s always someone who will ask about the team’s results.

8. Cross the Zubizuri Bridge

When you walk around the Bilbao riverside, you’ll be surprised by how many bridges you’ll find.

The Zubizuri Bridge, also known as Calatrava Bridge, is one of the most popular bridges in the city. Its arched structure is very unique and resembles a sailboat above the river.

Crossing the Zubizuri is an experience – contemplating the beautiful views of the Nervion River while walking on a non-slip mat that doesn’t make you feel very stable.

9. Enjoy the best city view from Artxanda viewpoint

There is nothing better than enjoying a panoramic view of a city.

You can find several viewpoints across Bilbao, but the Artxanda viewpoint is the highest one. If you want to access it, you can take the cable car (Funicular de Artxanda), which is situated in Funikularreko Plaza , a few minutes’ walk from Zubizuri Bridge.

The return ticket costs €4,30, so to make the most of your time at the viewpoint, you can have a small picnic while enjoying the view, although it can sometimes be windy.

In the area, you can also go for a short walk to enjoy the different views of the city.

Here there is a church (Ermita de San Roque) which I was very excited to visit as I thought it would be a nice hidden gem. However, once I reached the church, I was disappointed – you couldn’t go inside, there was graffiti all over the church and the surroundings weren’t neat either.

10. Shop at Gran Vía

Gran Vía is Bilbao’s shopping district which has a combination of high-street and traditional shops. This is the perfect place to buy anything you need or want (clothes and accessories, gourmet products, etc.) or simply stroll through.

Where to eat in Bilbao

The best place to enjoy Bilbao’s local cuisine is La Ribera Market . Inside the market is a food court that is like heaven for any foodie – the smell of different food, the colourful stalls, the staff behind the stalls trying to convince you why you should try their pintxos…

Bilbao is known for its pintxos which are similar to a tapa, but they always come with a slice of bread underneath the meat, fish, egg or vegetables. The truth is that the combinations are endless!

When you walk into the food court, you’ll be amazed by all the pintxos you can find – from chicken skewers and fried squid to omelette with ham and cheese, which is very popular in Northern Spain. 

You have plenty of options to choose from, and the great thing about eating at the market is that not only is it affordable (each pintxo is often 2 euros) but delicious too.

In addition to all the savoury bites, make space for dessert. There’s a stall with traditional, irresistible Basque sweets. I ordered Carolina, a meringue on top of a rounded pastry filled with custard. It was delicious!

Where to stay in Bilbao

30 minutes from Bilbao, Bermeo is a colourful coastal town in the Basque Country.

This is a place to visit for anyone who loves tranquil and off-the-beaten-path destinations. Apart from colourful buildings, the town is well-known for having one of the most important fishing ports in the region.

Wander the town centre, have a walk in the port, visit Lamera Park or simply relax at Laida Beach on a summer afternoon.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a small island that seems out of this world. It’s located about 40 minutes by car from Bilbao, and if you have time, it’s definitely worth visiting.

If you’ve watched season 7 of Games of Thrones , you probably recognise this place which is referred to as “Dragonstone.” Regardless of this, there is no doubt that the raw beauty of Gaztelugatxe will impress you.

The island is connected with the mainland by a man-made stone bridge; then, it transitions into a path with 241 steps and zigzags to the top.

When you reach the top, you’ll find a church, and it’s said that you should ring the church’s bell three times to make a wish.

Santander is an incredible but underrated city located 1 hour and 30 minutes from Bilbao, which makes it an easy day trip by bus or car.

The largest city in the Basque Country of Spain , Bilbao is a spectacular destination that experiences a slightly unique Temperate Oceanic climate as compared to the rest of Spain, owing to its hilly location. This means that weather in Bilbao tends to be on the cooler side, even during the summer. Additional characteristics include overcast skies and light rainfall. The summer season period from June to mid-September is the best time to visit the city. This the warmest part of the year and the weather remains well-balanced throughout this period. Fogs do tend to occur during the autumn season as the weather transitions from the warmth of the summer. This is ideal for enjoying the city and outdoor exploration.

Winter Season (December – February)

This season is overall rather stable, characterized by periodic light showers. The temperature averages around 9° C as Bilbao is a hilly destination. Snowfall in the city is very rare, making it alright for visitors to venture outside to explore the city. However, they must remain well-clad at all times as weather can get quite windy post sunset.

Spring Season (March – May)

This weather during this part of the year is relatively cooler, a little overcast and can get a bit damp at times. The periodic showers and increase in wind speed and humidity can make the weather appear much colder than it actually is. Outdoor exploration can become quite a hassle due to this muggy climate. This is not the best time for visitors to explore the city.   

Summer Season (June – August)

This period is one the best times to visit Bilbao. The temperature tends to be pleasantly warm, with the weather cooling down significantly in the evenings. Extremely warm days are a rarity, with temperatures averaging between 20 to 30° C for most of the year. However, on occasion there may be a hot spell for a few days. Visitors are advised to dress appropriately and keep themselves hydrated at all times. The high visibility and overall pleasant climate makes this a popular period for tourism.

Autumn Season (September – November)

Up until the end of September, the favourable summer weather conditions tend to continue. However from October to November the weather tends to start shifting, with a rainier and cooler climate dominating this season. Overcast skies and a slight fog do tend to occur as we get towards the end of this season. Temperatures tend to hover around 21° C during this season.

The Guggenheim Museum (referred to as Gugg for short) is world famous for its past and modern interweaving harmoniously, this is the main attraction in Bilbao city, not only a mecca of world contemporary art, Gugg is also a Unique pioneering architecture and is the symbol of Bilbao, welcoming 1 million visitors each year.

A place that any visitor to Bilbao cannot ignore is the Guggenheim museum. This is a very popular museum and is considered one of the greatest architectural works of the 20th century. Art works on outdoor display in this area such as the giant Puppy made by flowers with 12m high, impressive big spider, La Salve red arc bridge… never without visitors. When night falls, Gugg’s giant steel petals create an extremely splendid sight…

The 50-meter-tall building, built between 1993 and 1997, is located on the banks of the tranquil Nervion River. The Guggenheim Museum impresses visitors with its unique spiral-shaped architecture in the styles of Deconstructivism, Contemporary architecture, Expressionist architecture, creating a visual impression that makes viewers have different feelings. Anyone who visits this museum must be in awe of its magnificence.

The outside work is covered with titanium, if you observe carefully, you will see the reflection of sunlight from different angles creating non-stop movements, extremely beautiful.

Casco Viejo Old Town

The next destination that you should not miss when coming to Bilbao is the old town of Casco Viejo. It is still considered one of the most charming old quarters in the world. It stretching from the San Anton bridge to the San Nicolas church. Casco Viejo Old Town consists of 7 interwoven streets. There are many cafes, restaurants, bars, churches here. Strolling around the old town and choose a restaurant, sip a cup of coffee and watch the peaceful scenery in the old town of Casco Viejo. You will feel like time is slowing down.

The must-visit places in this old town include the Paseo del Arenal arterial street, the Arriaga theater, the Santiago church and the new Plaza Nueva.

This is home to buildings, houses dating from 1849 – 1900 such as Arriaga theater, Florale palace, town hall, ancient churches on winding roads, in which Santiago Cathedral was built in the 14th century.

You can stroll along the narrow cobblestone lanes of Seven Streets on the banks of the Nervion River, one of the most famous neighborhoods of the old town, where many ancient architectures and craft workshops are concentrated.

At least 400 shops here will make you dizzy and will be a place for you to test your bargain ability! Near Seven Streets is the Ribera which is considered the largest covered market in Europe with colorful glass windows which also brings a lot of fun.

Especially you can walk on the narrow cobblestone alleys in Seven Streets area which is one of the most famous quarters of the old town where you can stroll on the narrow cobblestone lanes, visit many quaint architectures with craft workshops.

The church is located on the highest hill in the Begoña district and was built in the 16th century in Gothic style. Inside the church is kept a painting of Saint Begoña – the patroness of the city. The Basilica is the site of Bilbao’s once-yearly celebration dedicated to the Holy Virgin.

Bilbao Cathedral

The church is located in the heart of the Old Town, it is the oldest structure in Bilbao built in the 14th century and was renovated in the 19th century. The church has a massive bell tower structure, pyramidal, interior. The interior is magnificent, large with three naves, vaulted ceilings and many chapels.

Vizcaya Bridge

Address: Puente de Vizcaya Zubia, Getxo, Bizkaia, Spain

Also on the Nervion River, a strange image took place before our eyes: A”mobile” suspension bridge gliding across the water, carrying passengers and vehicles across the river in 1 minute 30 seconds. It is the Vizcaya bridge – a transshipment bridge that residents in the region often call a suspension bridge, although its structure is completely different from the suspension bridge.

Vizcaya Bridge is 164 meters long, 43 meters high, with a boat hanging below to carry goods and passengers. Vizcaya is the oldest conveyance bridge in the world. The people of Bilbao are still very proud of their unique form of transportation, which is a combination of an iron bridge and a hanging boat.

Ribera Market

Ribera Market, built in 1929, is Bilbao’s famous local market. Ribera Market is located in the heart of the Old Town, with a space of 10,000 square meters. The market has a bright and bustling space, colorful glass windows and an impressive transparent floor. This is a place that attracts a lot of tourists looking to buy high-quality Basque products and cuisine, from fresh fruits and vegetables, seafood and delicious, typical foods of the region.

Ribera Market is nearly 100 years old and is considered one of Bilbao’s oldest markets. Coming to Ribera market, you can not only visit and shop but also enjoy the attractive dishes of Bilbao in particular and of Spain in general.

The market is housed in a historic building, designed by Pedro Ispizua and built in 1929, on the site of an old market that dates back to the 14th century. You will not only find stalls here, but also shops, bars, restaurants and live music performances, making it a great place for a lively night out. Covering over 10,000 square meters, it is the largest indoor market in Europe.

Explore Gaztelugatxe

If you want a short break from city life, head to the beautiful coastline around San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. About 50 minutes from downtown Bilbao Spain but well worth the trip if you want to see the beautiful Bay of Biscay.

On the small island (connected by a bridge to the mainland) there was a small house that acted as a shelter in the 9th or 10th Century. Now to get here you will need to climb a few hundred steps, but It’s well worth the experience. And Gaztelugatxe was the place to shoot Dragonstone in Game of Thrones with a very impressive setting.

Theater Arriaga

Address: Arriaga Plaza, 1, 48005 Bilbo, Bizkaia, Spain

The Arriaga Theater is the oldest theater in Bilbao, located next to a bridge connecting to Casco Viejo. The theater is named after the young local composer Juan Crisostomo Arriaga who died at the age of 19 and has been referred to as the ‘Spanish Mozart’. The interior of the theater still retains 19th-century furniture, making you feel felt like stepping back into the past.

Climb to the top of Mount Artxanda for amazing city views

If you’re a fan of breathtaking city views, take a ride to the top of Mount Artxanda on the old cable car railway, dating back to 1915. At the top, you’ll find more than just the stunning mountain views but also beautiful walkways and some great restaurants.

Perhaps due to its cooler climate, the north of Spain is often overlooked as a holiday and retirement destination. In this region lies Bilbao, a pleasant city with a rich history, which is well-worth a visit. And who knows? You may end up staying longer than you anticipated.

Bilbao is nestled in the Basque Country, a region spanning an area in the north of Spain and the south of France. Although Bilbao is a Spanish city, it has a culture unique from the rest of Spain. Here, you will not find Moorish buildings nor hear the sound of Flamenco heels, but what you will find is a proud city, boasting an incredibly rich and unique history.

The city has relied on the abundance of natural resources available in the area for hundreds of years, but after the economic crash of the iron and steel industries at the end of the 20th century, investments were made in redeveloping and restoring Bilbao into what it is now: a sophisticated, modern yet traditional city which still holds strong roots to its Basque culture. The striking balance of the new, urban Bilbao and the old, industrial Bilbao is truly something to be experienced. Bilbao is now the largest city in the Basque Country, and the new face of the region.

During this period of urban transformation, many of Bilbao’s iconic constructions were built, including the Metro system, designed by Sir Norman Foster and what could be Bilbao’s most famous landmark, the Guggenheim Museum.

Retire in Bilbao, Spain

Speak to expats in Bilbao and they will tell you that no matter how long you stay, the city remains just as charming as the first time you visit. Although many exciting and upbeat areas exist in Bilbao, it is a city that believes in the importance of taking it slow and enjoying the moment. This is evident in the siesta culture, whereby shops are typically closed from around midday to late afternoon, and the culture of going for a coffee and a break. This pace of life makes Bilbao a fantastic place to retire.

If you are looking to retire in Spain, or in Europe in general, here are seven reasons why you should consider Bilbao as the retirement city for you.

7 Reasons to Retire in Bilbao, Spain

1. Cooler Climate

If Spain appeals to you but heat is an issue, then Bilbao might be the city for you. As Bilbao lies in the north of Spain, the climate is generally cooler than the country’s most popular cities such as Madrid, Granada, Seville, Valencia, and Malaga. Although temperatures can soar in the hotter months, the average July and August temperatures are 77 F and 79 F respectively.

2. Cheap and Reliable Public Transport

Bilbao has efficient and reliable bus, tram, and subway services to boast, as well as train links to other cities. Bilbao’s public transport is affordable and with the Barik (Metro card), it is even cheaper. In a study published by the WHO surveying participants aged 60+, 73% said that subway drivers are polite and take passenger’s disabilities into account. Bilbao’s tram is comfortable, quick, and eco-friendly, and a typical tram ride will feature beautiful views along the river.

3. Safe City

Although Bilbao is a vibrant city, it is still a safe place to visit and live, and the closer you go to the town center, the safer it is. Although pickpockets do operate in touristy areas, they do not pose any more risk here than in other areas of Spain.

4. Clean City

Bilbao is known for its street cleanliness and eco-friendliness. In the latest survey by the Organization of Consumers and Users (2019), Bilbao ranked as the second cleanest city in Spain with 77 points out of 100, taking into account graffiti and cleanliness of streets, public parks, and rubbish container areas.

This is not surprising as Bilbao has excellent recycling schemes and street cleaning vehicles sweep and sanitize the streets constantly. 25% of these vehicles are now electric, meaning they clean the streets sustainably and quietly.

5. Peaceful City

Although Bilbao is an urban, vibrant city, it is a city that highly values green spaces, pedestrianized areas, and peaceful corners. There are plenty of areas to have peaceful walks, the most beautiful arguably being along the river, as it has wide pavements and you can walk past the Guggenheim museum. There are lots of smaller green spaces, as well as some larger parks including Etxebarria park, Miribilla park, and Doña Casilda park.

The city is also surrounded by beautiful natural areas that are easily accessible by public transport. You can go to the beach in the neighboring town of Algorta in under half an hour via the subway. If hiking is more your thing, you can take a walk in the lush countryside surrounding Bilbao; you can even go for mountain walks.

6. Large Elderly Population

Bilbao is a part of the ‘WHO Global Network of Age-Friendly cities and Communities’, meaning they are striving to ensure that the city is designed for people of all ages, and that it harnesses the potential that elderly people represent in their communities. The city has a very large and active elderly population. As Bilbao places emphasis on communal areas such as parks, squares, and cafés, it is incredibly easy for the elderly to meet up with friends and go for walks, coffee, and food together (or alone). This is something that is very often seen and is viewed as important by locals. Additionally, benches and seating areas are peppered all over the town, meaning you can always count on finding somewhere to sit outside.

7. English is Widely Spoken

Many Bilbainos (people from Bilbao) are multilingual, and it is common for people to speak English as well as Spanish and Basque, particularly in official spaces as Bilbao is a major business center. If you learn some basic Spanish or Basque words, it is unlikely that you will have issues settling in and getting around.

What is the Best Time of Year to Visit Bilbao, Spain?

The best time of the year to visit Bilbao depends on the season you prefer to travel in and whether or not you like traveling in busy periods. For nine days in August, Bilbao celebrates their ‘big week’, named ‘la semana grande’ in Spanish or ‘Aste Nagusia’ in Basque. It is celebrated annually and begins on the first Saturday following the 15th of August. This is a period of festivity for the locals, during which traditional Basque sports, music, and dance are celebrated throughout the day. Stands lining the streets serve food and drinks in the daytime and during the night, they act as on-the-street nightclubs. If you would prefer a more peaceful visit, I recommend avoiding the ‘big week’.

10 Things to do in Bilbao, Spain

1. Funicular of Artxanda

For a stunning panoramic view overlooking all of Bilbao, you can take the funicular up Mount Artxanda to the viewing point or ‘mirador’ of Artxanda. You will have fun spotting the city’s landmarks, from the Guggenheim museum to the San Mamés football stadium. If you purchase Bilbao’s rechargeable public transport card, the Barik, your fare will be under $1. If not, a return ticket will cost you $4.

2. Go for Pintxos

Pintxos are typical bar and café foods in the Basque Country. They are small bites to eat that are similar to Spanish ‘tapas’. Pintxos usually are atop a piece of bread and get their name from the fact they are held together with a toothpick. Common pintxos include Spanish omelette on bread, cured ham on bread, or croquettes on bread. There are so many different types of pintxos; there is one for everyone.

3. Explore the Old Town

The old town, called ‘el Casco Viejo’ in Spanish, refers to the old Bilbao district. It is made up primarily of seven streets, named ‘las siete calles’. Although it is called the old town, it is far from abandoned; it is still a popular, thriving area and could be referred to as the heart of Bilbao. There are plenty of shopping opportunities in the old town as the seven streets are primarily stores and restaurants, and you can even pick up a souvenir or two.

4. Go for a Drink or Bite to Eat in the Plaza Nueva

The Plaza Nueva, or the ‘new square’ is a square of Neoclassical style, nestled in the old town. Completed in the mid-19th century, each side of the square is lined by bars, cafés, and restaurants which give the square a unique, lively atmosphere. If you have good weather, you can choose to sit in an eatery’s outside seating area.

5. El Mercado la Ribera

Ribera market, located beside Bilbao’s estuary in the old town, is a two-floored indoor marketplace that won the record for the largest indoor marketplace in Europe by the Guinness Book of Records in 1990. On the top floor you will find the actual market, and on the ground floor are restaurants and cafés. El Mercado la Ribera is a fantastic place to eat if you are in a group, as you can pick and choose what you want to eat from different places while being able to sit together as a group.

6. Make Sure to Have a Café Con Leche

Like the rest of Spain, Bilbao has an important coffee drinking culture. Taking time out of one’s day to go for a coffee and a pintxo or sweet treat is a valued thing in Bilbao. The most common type of coffee is a ‘café con leche’, a coffee with milk, but you can order a ‘cortado’ if you would like less milk, or a ‘café con hielo’ for an iced coffee. In Bilbao, try finishing your meal with a coffee like the locals, you might find they help fight the post-meal slump.

7. Guggenheim Museum

Arguably the most well-known structure in Bilbao, the Guggenheim museum is an architecturally stunning building made up of titanium panels, shaped like a distorted ship. Designed by Frank Gehry, the museum features mostly modern art, but the art is not just limited to the inside of the museum. Famous works of art including the giant spider Mamen, by Louise Bourgeois and The Tall Tree and the Eye by Anish Kapoor can be found around the outside the museum. Jeff Koons’ huge sculpture of a dog made out of flowers, lovingly referred to as ‘el Puppy’ by the locals is something to not be missed. If you do not want to enter the museum, you can have a café con leche sat outside on the terrace, from where you can admire the dog of flowers.

8. Spend Time on Bilbao’s Estuary

Bilbao’s river estuary runs through the city of Bilbao and is part estuary and part tidal river. You can take a boat ride tour along the river, but if you do not wish to go on the water, you can still take a peaceful walk along the riverbank’s wide walkways and appreciate the architecture of Bilbao’s many bridges. The most famous bridges in Bilbao are La Salve, San Antón Bridge, and Zubizuri Bridge.

9. San Mamés Football Stadium and Museum

If you are a football/soccer fan you might be interested in visiting Bilbao’s football stadium, San Mamés. Here, you can take a tour of the stadium and visit their museum. If you’re not interested in taking a tour, you can have a drink and bite to eat in their football-themed bar overlooking the football pitch.

10. Vizcaya Bridge

Although not strictly in Bilbao, this transporter bridge lies in between the neighboring towns of Portugalete and Getxo. The bridge was built in 1893 and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it is the oldest transporter bridge in the world. In order to allow people to cross the bridge, a shuttle carrying pedestrians and cars hangs from the bridge and travels from one side to the other. Along the top of the bridge is a pedestrian walkway which you can walk along to get beautiful views and to read information about the bridge’s history. With Bilbao’s fast and cheap metro system, you can reach the town in 20 minutes from Bilbao for $1 using the rechargeable travel card.

Whether you decide to go to Bilbao for a holiday or for something more permanent, I’m sure you will be impressed with the city’s warm and welcoming nature.

Bilbao lies on either side of the river Ría de Bilbao and the old shipyard area known as Abandoibarra, is now a modern riverbank lined with iconic buildings with its most staggering feature being the Guggenheim Museum designed by Frank Gehry, a rippling and undulating metallic structure and buildings like the Azkuna Zentroa, redesigned by Philippe Starck.

Bilbao was once an industrial mining city until the Ria de Bilbao flooded in 1983 and submerged most of the medieval buildings in the Old Town, also called El Casco Viejo.

A few years after the Basque government decided to repossess the former industrial areas and reconstruct a new waterfront. This later became modernised to the riverside area you say today.

The best time to visit Bilbao

Bilbao is in the North of Spain and weather in the North is less consistent than in other parts of Spain and weather is often cooler than other parts of Spain as well as significantly more rainfall especially outside of summer months. The best time to visit is in May, June, July and September where you have the least rainfall.

August is also a dry month but is the peak tourist season, which is usually best avoided due to crowded beaches, expensive hotel rates and crowds.

If you want to experience the vibrant spirit of Bilbao you may well want to consider travel in August for their annual festival called Aste Nagusia or Great Week in Basque.

This is Bilbao’s biggest festival and lasts a whopping 9 days! In 2019 the festival will be held from Saturday August 17 th to August 25 th .

A rocket is launched into the air to open the festival and all the revelry begins with lively parades, food fights, fireworks, Basque dancing and traditional Basque sports competitions such as wood chopping. Be aware that this is a busy and crowded period and prices for hotels will be at their highest.

How to get around Bilbao

Bilbao is a city that is built for cycling. As it is relatively flat it is easy to traverse by bicycle and some hotels have bicycle rental services. Bicycles will allow you to cycle down the river and visit some areas just outside of the city centre.

For public transport including bus and metro you can buy a transport card, which can be topped up at any station called the Bilbao Bizkaia Card. A 24-hour card costs only €10, whilst a 48 hour card is only €15. You can also purchase your card online .

Bilbao’s metro service with only two lines, which will take you to the nearby beaches and also charming villages within metropolitan Bilbao. Sir Norman Foster, the famous architect, created the iconic styling of the metro station entrances.

The metro runs from 6am to around 11pm from Mondays to Fridays and open all weekend until 11pm on Sunday.

Bilbobus is the urban bus network in the city, running daily from 6am to 11pm with a frequency between 10 to 30 minutes between buses. There are also night buses known as Gautxoris, running until 2am on Fridays and all night long in the weekends. You can find out more on the Bilbobus website .

Where to stay in Bilbao

Bilbao has attracted a lot of tourism since its revamp and prices for hotels are not as cheap as they once were. There are still many budget options from around €50 upwards per night.  

Hotel Bilbao Jardines – This hotel is a short stroll from the Santiago Cathedral and an excellent choice for budget conscious travellers. Prices range from €59 per night for a double room which are clean and contemporary. The hotel also offers bicycle rental for free.

Casual Bilbao Gurea – This centrally located hotel is situated in the Casco Viejo and a few minutes walk from the Santiago Cathedral. Rooms have large windows that allow sunlight in; there is also parking on site for an additional cost as well as an airport pickup service that can be organized by reception.

Hotel Photo Zabalburu – The hotel is situated in the South of Bilbao has a photography theme, with each room decorated with a large image of different parts of the city. There is a bicycle rental service, library and a photography exhibition.

Basque Boutique – This hotel can hold its own against some of the more expensive hotels in Bilbao. Situated in the centre of the Casco Viejo, the eight themed rooms are decorated with handmade wooden furniture and the rooms have gorgeous wooden beams and exposed brick walls. Themes include the Txakoli room, the Gernika room and Basque language room.

Things to do in Bilbao

Wander the seven streets of casco viejo.

Casco Viejo is the historical old city, established in the 14 th century. Siete Calles or Seven Streets in English is full of small shops, haberdasheries, boutiques and cut bakeries.

There are also a lot of bars where you can enjoy a nice cool glass of white sparkling wine known as Txakoli or enjoy a small beer also known as a “zurito”.

Float down the River Nervión

The Nervion river is lined with promenades, impressive bridges such as the Zubizuri Bridge and can be explored by kayak, paddleboard or by river cruises.

For kayak and paddleboard rental you can visit Bilbao Kayak, and organize guided tours included a night paddleboard tour.

Eat Pintxos

Basque country is famed for its pintxos, their answer to Spanish tapas. Pintxos are small pieces of bread topped with delicious ingredients that can include meat, blood sausage or morcilla, fish and more.

The best place to experience pintxos is at the various pintxo bars situated in the Neoclassical Square of Plaza Nueva.

Here you can find many bars with counter tops laden with delicious pintxos for you to graze on as you barhop from one bar to another. Head to Gure Toki, in your bar crawl to try out their inventive and creative pintxos.

Visit the Mercado de la Ribiera

A visit to Bilbao’s art deco market is a must, to see the local produce on offer and sample different bites. There is also a bar called La Ribera Bar , which is a great venue for live music in the evenings.

Take a trip on the funicular

Visit the Artxanda Mountain with the funicular railway, which has been in operation since 1915. The three-minute ride only costs less than a euro and at the top you will find excellent panoramic views of the city and cafes and a swimming pool

Ride the Hanging Bridge gondola

The Puente Colgante was built in 1893 and has a gondola that was suspended form the 61m high towers on cables to connect Getxo suburb with Portugalete port whilst making way for the passage of tall ships.

You can pay for an individual trip for 40 cents or enjoy a tour for €9, which includes walk along the 45m-high walkway. Not for those who have a fear of heights!

Explore Bilbao’s street art paradise

Bilbao has a burgeoning street art scene and you can find interesting graffiti, political messages and vibrant colourful art all around the city, especially along the Ibaizabal River.

The Basques produce excellent fine wine , you can visit the Bodegas Ados Basarte in Bakio, just outside the city, to enjoy a wine tasting experience whilst being surrounded by countryside.

Guggenheim museum.

The jewel in the crown of Bilbao’s art scene is the Guggenheim museum on the riverside. You can explore open air sculptures such as Jeff Koon’s flower adorned “Puppy” and Louise Bourgeois’ “Maman”, a giant looming spider.

The Guggenheim makes for great instagram photos. King Juan Carlos I of Spain inaugurated the museum in 1997 and the gleaming titanium clad museum was built on a site of an old port that exported raw materials such as iron ore and coal to European cities.

Aside from art, there is also music at the Guggenheim and you can listen to live music and dancing one Friday a month.

Visit the Azkuna Zentroa

This cultural and creative space was designed by Philippe Starck, whose signature style is evident in the 43 unique columns supporting the first floor.

This structure was a refurbished old wine warehouse. Here you will find a cinema, rooftop pool, café and shops.

You can enjoy a city view whilst taking a swim and the pool has a glass bottom, which means that passers-by below can see the swimmers overhead.

Take a walk in the Casco Viejo

The old town is known as the Casco Viejo and is full of narrow undulating streets and colourful buildings as well as countless bars and shops.

Here you can visit the Catedral de Santiago de Bilbao, sample pintxos in the numerous bars in Plaza Nueva and visit the churches of San Nicolás and San Antón.

This tour to the nearby town of Kortezubi, outside of Bilbao, will take you to the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve.

Where the artist and sculptor, Agustín Ibarrola, created a magical painted forest, full of vibrant geometric shapes and figures with over 47 works painted across the forest for visitors to discover.

This forest can be visited by car, being the easiest transport method to get there. You can also visit by Train on the Gernika service on Euskotren and then walking 7 km on foot. There is also a bus called the Bizkaibus with a service to Koretezubi followed by a 3 km walk.

Visit Dragonstone from Game of Thrones

For diehard Game of Thrones fans , a visit to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a must! This hermitage was built in the 11 th century on the stone crag and the stone paths were said to have been established by the Knights Templar. 

The ancient bridge to the church and the hundreds of stairs attracts swarms of tourists every year who make the hike from the hill to the hermitage. The site has become more popular since it was used as a setting for Dragonstone.

The best way to get there is by Bilbao bus line A3518 Bilbao (Moyúa)-Bakio or by car (the easiest method).

48 Hours in Bilbao

Here is a guide to 48 action packed hours in Bilbao:

Day One in Bilbao

Start your day off with a great breakfast in the sleek and stylish Sua San, just opposite the Guggenheim museum. They have excellent cakes, pastries and smoothies and on weekends they have a full brunch menu including eggs benedict or bagels for only €12.50 including a juice and a coffee.

From here you can head to the Guggenheim Museum, spend some time seeing the sculptures outside and spend some time wandering around taking in the art inside the museum. After taking in the art and culture you can go across the river to the Funicular de Artxanda, ride up to the top and take in the views of the river and the city.

After descending from the top of Artxanda you can explore the Casco Viejo, barhopping in Plaza Nueva from one bar to another to sample different types of pintxos and enjoying some good Basque wine.

You can spend some time wandering around the Casco Viejo and exploring the seven streets, taking in the sights of the Old Town which dates back over 700 years. Here you can visit the Cathedral of Santiago de Bilbao, the UNESCO heritage site dating back to the 14 th and 15 th century.

In the evening you can visit the La Ribera food market, designed in 1929 by the architect, Pedro Ispizua, which at night becomes a live music venue at La Ribera, if you want to catch some Jazz and take in the music scene of Bilbao.

Day Two in Bilbao

Start the day with a trip to Azkuna Zentroa, the culture and leisure centre with a rooftop infinity swimming pool with a glass bottom, so you can see the swimmers from below. The visit should only take around 30 minutes to one hour.

From here you can hop on the metro and head to the beach at Getxo, just 20 minutes away by metro. Getxo is an area where the wealthiest people from Bilbao built their mansions and you can take a stroll on the “Camino de las Grandes Villas” to see some prime period architecture until you reach Marina El Abra, a marina with a promenade and plenty of cafes and restaurants. Here you can enjoy some grilled meat at El Abra Grill situated just on the marine, a popular restaurant.

From here you can also visit the Old Port of Algorta, a fishing port where sailors once lived. The streets are narrow and steep with charming little white houses and this old port is the perfect place where locals gather to catch the sunset.

On the way back you can head across the Vizcaya Bridge through the gondola that is suspended from the bridge itself, giving you an incredible view of the river. The bridge is a UNESCO world heritage site and was considered one of the most important constructions in Europe during the industrial revolution.

To end your evening, you can have some tapas in one of Bilbao’s most popular streets Calle Ledesma, lined with bar after bar, and then take a short three minute stroll to one of the trendiest bars of Bilbao called Kafe Antzokia, it has a restaurant, bars, concert stage and regularly hosts cultural events.

The venue was once a cinema and the antique theatre atmosphere is one of the places to be seen in Bilbao. This will be the perfect goodbye to the vibrant city of Bilbao and leave you with the desire to return and explore more of this hidden gem in Spain.

#1 Guggenheim Museum

Visiting the Guggenheim Museum is a must-do when spending a day in Bilbao. Bilbao used to be an industrial city that had fallen into disrepair, due to the construction of the Guggenheim Museum in 1997, the entire city has been transformed into a hip city.

The unique design of Frank Gehry’s building stands out among the riverbank and offers one of the best views of the city. Upon entering, you will be taken aback by its spectacular galleries that feature an array of local and international art. Take a stroll around the museum and admire its twelve-meter-high flower dog, the spider, and luminous crystal balls outside. Make your way up the stairs at the river for an even more impressive view of Bilbao. The Guggenheim Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm and tickets can be purchased for €13 / $14 per person via the official website of the Guggenheim Museum .

#2 Historic Center

Exploring one day in Bilbao’s historic center, also called Casco Viejo, is one of the highlights to visit in Bilbao. It is located on the banks of the Nervión River, it houses centuries-old city walls that helped defend this medieval neighborhood during its trading days. Today, you can wander around seven main streets, each of which still holds some of the same craftsmanship and culture that was present when it was first built.

The great thing about Casco Viejo is that, unlike many cities, it doesn’t just consist of tourist hot spots. You can still find plenty of local boutiques, bars, and restaurants to explore. Make sure to visit both during the day and night to get the full experience. During the day, you can be a tourist and admire the architecture, and when you visit it in the evening you are like a local and can enjoy the food with a great atmosphere. 

Pintxos is a typical food from the north of Spain. Pintxos are similar to tapas, the difference is that tapas are small versions of a main course and pintxos are small dishes, often with a skewer on a bun. Pintxos are mainly eaten on social occasions. Pintxos are delicious because, like tapas, they are very diverse. It is great when you enjoyed a menu of the day (menu del dia) in the afternoon so that you don’t have to eat a lot in the evening. You can eat a few pintxos and that is enough.

The best thing is to walk into a bar and order a drink with pintxos. Our favorite place in Bilbao to eat pintxos is the cafe Iruna. Café Iruna has a great atmosphere because it is built in an Andalic style, therefore, you have the feeling that you are suddenly in the south of Spain. It is a traditional Basque cafe where it is very cozy. The food is delicious, for €2 / $2.15 per pintxos you don’t have to spend much money to eat. At the bar, you can see and order the pintxos. The pintxos you see in the photo below are highly recommended, and very tasty!

Option 1 great location: Hesperia Bilbao Close to the Guggenheim Museum is located Hesperia Bilbao . This modern hotel has beautiful rooms, a very good breakfast, and a roof terrace with a beautiful view of the Guggenheim Museum and the river Nervión. #4 Catedral de Santiago

In the historic center is the Cathedral of Bilbao located which is built in the 14th century, the cathedral is an important place for pilgrims who are walking the northern route of Camino de Santiago. The cathedral is the oldest building in Bilbao and the most important Gothic building in the province of the Basque Country. The best part of the cathedral is its impressive columns and stunning courtyard, as well as the beautiful statues that adorn the entrance. The square with the old well in front of the cathedral is very romantic and atmospheric.

The cathedral is open daily from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm and entry fees are €6 / $6.46 per person. #5 San Mamés

Whether or not you are a football fan, a visit to the football stadium of the Athletic Club is a fun activity. Among football enthusiasts, the San Mamés stadium is also called the cathedral of football. This is because San Mamés is one of the oldest stadiums in Spain and everyone at the stadium is greeted with laughter and applause regardless of whether you are a friend or an ‘enemy’.

#6 Cross the Zubizuri bridge

As soon as you walk along the Nervión river, you will come across the iconic Zubizuri bridge. This bridge is about 7 minutes away from the Guggenheim Museum and is one of the most unique bridges you have ever seen. Its arched shape sets it apart from other bridges, and taking a stroll across it is a must-do for anyone who has 1 day in Bilbao. Once you reach the middle of the bridge, take a moment to enjoy the view of the river. Most travelers skip this sight as they walk directly from the Guggenheim Museum to the historical center.

#7 Teatro Arriaga

If you like theaters or if you just like to see a historical building, then a visit to Teatro Arriaga is recommended. The theater is located on Puente del Arenal and overlooks the Nervión River. When you enter the historic center, this is the large building on your right.

The Arriaga theater is built in the 19th century in a neo-baroque style. You can only visit the theater through a guided tour or by going to a performance.

A tour can only be followed on the weekends. For current timeslots check the official Teatro Arriaga website. Tickets are €5 / $5.38 per person.

#8 Viewpoint Artxanda

At the top of mountain Atxanda, you have a beautiful view of the entire city. To get to the top you need to take the funicular (cable car). Cross the bridge Zubizuri and walk to Plaza del Funicular. To make use of the cable car you need a Bilbao Bizkaia Card, which you can purchase at the Bilbao Tourist Office. The Bilbao Bizkaia Card costs €10 / $10.77, with this card you can use public transport in the city for 24 hours unlimited and visit some cultural buildings for free. The address of the tourist office is Plaza Circular number 1.

The cable car is open daily from 7:15 am to 10 pm and the tourist office daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

#9 Plaza Nueva

Visiting Plaza Nueva is an absolute must-do when exploring Bilbao in a day. Located in the heart of the city, this monumental square dates back to 1851 and offers visitors a unique atmosphere with plenty of terraces, bars, and restaurants for people to enjoy. Not only that but every Sunday morning local vendors flock to the square for a flea market making it the perfect destination for antique lovers.

Tip: during our trip to Bilbao we received tips from locals to visit this flea market, so when you are possible try to travel also on a Sunday to Bilbao to visit it!

#10 Bicycle tour

When you are short on time and want to see as much as possible, taking a 3-hour bicycle tour is the perfect way to experience all that Bilbao has to offer in one day! With an experienced local guide, you’ll be able to cover most of the activities on this list as well as explore lesser-known places and attractions in the city.

#11 Shopping on Gran Vía

You can see that Bilbao has developed in recent years when you walk along the Gran Vía. In this large shopping street, you can see brands from all over the world. It’s nice to walk through the beautiful shopping street and enjoy all the large buildings.

We personally did not go shopping because we wanted to visit the cultural highlights of the city. But if you like to go shopping you have the possibility to do so. The most beautiful part is Plaza Mayor. It is surrounded by old buildings and in the center, you see a fountain that is illuminated in the evening. 

#12 Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park

If you want to relax in the city for a while, visiting Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park is a must. This park is Bilbao’s largest park and is very popular among the locals. This is because the park is built in English, making everything very playful. You can see various fountains, ponds, trees, flowers, and animal species.

For travelers with children, this park is recommended because of the animal meadow and play equipment. The park is located near the Guggenheim, about a five-minute walk away. In the summer evenings, it is also nice to walk through this park because everything is nicely lit.

#13 Other activities

If you only have one day in Bilbao, you can do the 12 activities we listed. Of course, you can not visit all the highlights if you one have 1 day in Bilbao. Below we recommend five activities to do when you have more time in Bilbao, or that you can switch with one of the activities listed in the previous 12. You can add some of these activities to your Bilbao itinerary, but be careful not to add too many things.

#13.1 Puente de Vizcaya

Puente de Vizcaya is a bridge that is a World Heritage Site. The transport bridge was built in 1983 and carries vehicles and pedestrians from one side to the other. You can enter the gondola for €0.45 / $0.48 per person. Another option is to walk on top of the bridge and cross the river. From the bridge, you have a great view of the industry of Bilbao. Tickets are €9 / $9.69 per person.

Puente de Vizcaya is located in Getxo. The best way to arrive at the bridge is to take the metro to Areeta station. Travel time is +/- 20 minutes from the center. You can visit the bridge daily.

#13.2 Walk along the Nervión River

One of the best things to do in Bilbao is to walk along the Nervión river. It is recommended to start at the San Mamés stadium and to walk till Puente del Arenal, this is the bridge you cross to visit the historic center. During this walk, you will come across many sights that are on this list, such as the Guggenheim Museum and Zubizuri.

If you walk along the river, visit the historic center, and visit the new part of Gran Via you see the best parts of Bilbao. The walk from San Mamés to Puente del Arenal takes +/- 40 minutes. This is just the walk itself, if you take the time to discover the sights you encounter during your walk you need all morning. Take into account +/- 4 hours.

#13.3 Boat tour

If you want to discover the Nervión River uniquely, a boat tour is something for you. During the 2.5-hour boat tour, you will cruise the river and see all the important buildings of Bilbao. The nice thing about the boat tour is that you learn about the history of Bilbao through the guide who is present. Read more information here .

If you have access to a car, visiting San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (Bermeo), Zumaia & Ermita de San Telmo, and San Sebastian is highly recommended. It is also possible to do this with a tour.

#13.4 Zumaia & Ermita de San Telmo

Zumaia & Located between Bilbao and San Sebastian, Ermita de San Telmo is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the Basque Country. Zumaia is known for its special rock formations which are very impressive to see. On top of this rock is located Ermita de San Telmo a chapel from which you have a magnificent view over the beach. Park your car at the village of Zumaia and walk to Ermita de San Telmo, then go to the beach for a good view of the rocky coast of Zumaia.

If you do not have access to a car, you can book this tour to visit Zumaia & Ermita de San Telmo.

#13.5 San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in Bermeo is a must to visit. Here you can visit a church built on a peninsula. The hike, environment, and nature are impressive, for nature lovers this is one of the best things to do in Spain. The reason it has become so popular in recent years is that it was a filming location on Game of Thrones. It is important that reserve your ticket upfront, it is not possible to do this at the entrance. Be on time with your booking because tickets run out quickly!

#13.6 San Sebastian

Bilbao is a big city, in 1 day / 2 nights you have enough time to do most of the activities from this list. If you have the opportunity it is strongly recommended to stay 2 days / 3 nights in Bilbao. This allows you to take all the time you need to discover the Guggenheim Museum, visit the historic center during the day and evening, walk along the Nervión River, and more from this list! We were 1.5 days in Bilbao and found it perfect to discover Bilbao.

If you are planning to do day trips that are mentioned in this list, we recommend that you extend your stay in Bilbao by the number of day trips you will do.

Where to stay in Bilbao?

There are many accommodations to choose from. It’s hard to find one with good value for money. In addition, your options are often limited because many accommodations are fully booked quickly. This is because Bilbao is very popular because of the Guggenheim Museum. Where to eat in Bilbao?

At #3 we mentioned that eating at Cafe Iruna is the best place to try pintxos. Café Iruna has a great atmosphere because it is built in an Andalic style, therefore, you have the feeling that you are suddenly in the south of Spain. It is a traditional Basque cafe where it is very cozy. The food is delicious, for €2 / $2.16 per pintxos you don’t have to spend much money to eat. At the bar, you can see and order the pintxos.

At Markina restaurante you can enjoy a menu del dia in the afternoon. We have eaten a lot of Menú del día during our trip through Spain, but we can tell you that the quality here is great. As a starter, we recommend the gazpacho soup or Fabada. The fish is recommended as the main course because it is nice and crispy due to the preparation of the grill. You also get dessert and a drink for a price of €15.65 / $16.86 per person, which is really cheap when you consider what you get.

If you want to eat a sandwich in the morning or afternoon, Panadería Bertiz is recommended. Here you can get a whole baguette for €5 / $5.39 with toppings of your choice. The cappuccino and milkshakes are also good here.

If you want to have a drink on a terrace, Sorginzulo at Plaza Nueva is a must. A nice place to enjoy the imposing buildings and the cozy atmosphere of the old square. One of the nicest places to have a drink.

How to get to Bilbao?

The best way to reach Bilbao is by plane, car, or train. Bilbao has an international airport so you can easily fly directly to this city. Bilbao is close to the French border, making it an acceptable distance by car from different places in Europe. If you are in a city in Spain you can easily travel by train to Bilbao, train tickets can be bought here (you can also buy other public transport tickets via the link). It isn’t recommended to travel by train from cities outside Spain to Bilbao due to the long travel time.

What is the best period to visit Bilbao?

The best time to visit Bilbao is from April to September. This period, although considered the high season, offers the most pleasant temperatures and the widest range of activities. The city’s mild maritime climate makes this the ideal time for a city trip. However, if you’re looking for a more peaceful experience at a lower price, then autumn and winter are the perfect time to visit.

We traveled in September to Bilbao and loved it. Our impression is that no matter when you choose to go, Bilbao has something to offer for everyone at any time of the year.

Is Bilbao worth visiting?

People often have to choose between here and San Sebastian, but if you’re after a proper city break, Bilbao is the one. Things to do in Bilbao

1.  The Old Town

What is it?  A picturesque, cobbled-street kind of town, and Bilbao’s oldest neighbourhood.  Why go?  As the oldest part of Bilbao (founded 700 years ago), this is where it all began, and the neighbourhood still rings with the same traditional charm it always has. But it’s far, far from being a tame sort of place; the old town is alive with plenty of restaurants, bars and shops, and new spots are popping up all the time. It rides with the times. Come here for a pintxo at the lovely Santa Maria , sip on glasses of wine at Los Jardines bar, and take your time exploring the trinket shops in the area. The old town in Bilbao is also called the ‘siete calles’, which means seven streets in English, and it’s a must-see in Bilbao. 

2.  Guggenheim Museum

What is it? One of the most important cutting-edge contemporary art museums in Spain Why go? For travellers and locals, art lovers and curious minds, the Guggenheim is unmissable. Despite being barely open 25 years, the Guggenheim has become a staple landmark in Bilbao and an essential point of reference for global contemporary art. The experience starts by simply walking towards the brilliantly odd-shaped, metal-looking façade: everything around it is art, from the building itself to the two famous statues outside the museum: Puppy the dog and Mamá the spider. Once inside, the breathtaking spaces host appropriately spectacular exhibitions.

3.  Bilbao's bridges

What are they? Connecting both sides of the Nirvión estuary that cuts the Bilbao in half, the city’s bridges are a great way to get acquainted with the Basque capital. Why go? Bilbao has grown around its river and the bridges are essential to the city’s functioning, but you can also appreciate Bilbao’s historical evolution through its bridges. From the fourteenth-century San Antón bridge and the recently-opened Frank Gehry to the Calatrava-designed Zubizuri and the Puente de Deusto (a drawbridge that opens up the city centre to vessel traffic), bridges of all kinds connect Bilbao’s two shores.

4.  Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao

What is it? One of the best art museums in town. Why go? Even before the Guggenheim, Bilbao’s art gallery scene was excellent. The Bellas Artes Museum opened its doors at the start of the twentieth century and is home to fascinating collections of nationally renowned painters like Goya, El Greco, Murillo and Gauguin, and works from other influential Spanish and Basque artists. It might be a little older and less famous than the shiny, modern Gugg, but the Museo de Bellas Artes continues to delight art enthusiasts.

5.  Hucha de los Txikiteros

What is it? A piggybank to throw your spare coins into at the end of the day. Why go? Txikiteros are groups of people who frequent the old town bars and drink txikitos (small glasses of wine). Before making their way home, they approach this ‘piggybank’ in Pelota Street, marked by an ‘x’ on the floor. Here they place their spare coins, and every October 11, the money is collected and donated to charity. It’s also the only place in the old town from where the Basílica de la Virgen de Begoña is visible.

6.  Mercado de la Ribera

What is it? Europe’s biggest covered market. Why go? Basque cuisine is admired worldwide, and this market is one of its hallowed grounds. Anything can be found here, from fresh regional produce shining under the light of the market’s stained-glass roof to a hospitality area where visitors can experience local cuisine while enjoying views of the river. Oh, and don’t miss the chance for a slow jazz boogie in the new bar downstairs.

7.  Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Begoña

What is it? The basilica dedicated to Bizkaia’s patron saint. Why go? Legend says the basilica was erected on the very spot where the Virgin Begoña once appeared. Dubbed a ‘temple of the people’ (because its construction was funded through community donations), the late-Gothic style basilica took more than a century to build. The big feast days are August 15 and October 11, when believers visit to worship the ‘amaxu’ ('mother' in Basque). Be warned: there are 316 steps to conquer before reaching the basilica.

8.  Plaza Nueva

What is it? A flea market where you can buy and exchange pretty much anything you can imagine. Why go? There’s something very special about Plaza Nueva. Every Sunday, the square hosts a market that smells like old times and nostalgia – perhaps because most of the furniture, books, albums or clothes sold here are, indeed, rather old. On a morning walk, you can also pop by the flower market on El Arenal, with all its vibrant colours and delicious smells.

9.  Zorrotzaurre

What is it? An old industrial area now a manmade island with loads of events and buzz. Why go? Zorratzaurre has become the Basque country’s very own Manhattan. Starting as a peninsula, it has become an island – and it’s packed with stuff that keeps the area vibrant and buzzing. Every Sunday morning, there’s an open market called Open Your Ganbara in the old Artiach Factory, where spaces like Pabellón 6 also organise theatre shows. This ‘underground’ neighbourhood will undoubtedly have a big say in Bilbao’s future.

10.  Riverside docks

What is it? Docks where people gather to have a drink and enjoy riverside views. Why go? When the sun goes down and people start roaming the streets looking for fun, here’s where they find it. Whether you’re after a glass of wine at the end of the day or a spot for a vibrant weekend night out, the docks are the place to be. There are two top-notch, totally atmospheric options for both nibbles and blending in seamlessly with the locals: Muelle Marzana, behind Mercado de la Rivera, and Muelle de Ripa, in front of the Arriaga Theatre.

11.  Quiosco de El Arenal

What is it? A circular kiosk dedicated to music. Why go? Walking through the big trees that populate El Arenal, you’ll find a small and quirky kiosk. The circular shape with no pillars and huge windows provides an uninterrupted view of the Art-Decó stage and its performers. Be sure to check out the underground café and the Sunday performances by local musicians.

12.  Teatro Arriaga

What is it? A majestic neo-baroque theatre. Why go? Teatro Arriaga is one of the most majestic buildings in all of Bilbao. Inspired by the Paris Opera, it’s dedicated to local musician Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, generally known as the ‘Spanish Mozart’. The theatre is known for having suffered various mishaps (it burnt down in 1914 and flooded in 1983) but, despite all that, it still boasts one of the city’s biggest arts and culture programmes. If you want to unmask all the quirks and secrets of Arriaga’s 125-year history, the theatre’s guided tours are the way to go.

13.  Rascacielos de Bailén

What is it? Bilbao’s first skyscraper. Why go? As the first building in Bilbao to stand higher than 40 meters, back in the 1940s the Rascacielos de Bailén was an architectural marvel. These days, with its nineteenth-century Chicago-style design, it’s considered quite an odd building – but it’s worth visiting if only for its rooftop, which offers spectacular views of the old town.

14.  Parque Casilda Iturrizar

What is it? The city-centre park. Why go? There’s no better way to get away from the city without actually leaving it than by visiting Bilbao’s lungs: Casilda Iturrizar. Featuring several sports areas, a fountain that hosts water shows, and a music pergola, people from Bilbao have named it ‘el Parque de Los Patos’ (the duck’s park) because its beautiful pond is home to several bird species. It’s also perfect for a relaxed, shaded picnic.

15.  Mirador de Artxanda

What is it? A mirador offering peerless views of the city. Why go? Monte Artxanda has long been one of the locals favourite places to spend their free time. A cable car, built at the start of the twentieth century, remains the easiest way to access the top of the hill. Once at the top, the first thing to do is enjoy a bird’s eye view of the city before settling down with a Txakoli con gilda in one of the nearby restaurants.

16.  Vizcaya Bridge

What is it? The world’s first metal-structured ferry bridge. Why go? The Vizcaya Bridge is one of the most remarkable constructions in northern Spain. With more than a century of history behind it, this was a real engineering milestone. It can be crossed by car, foot, bike or train, but our top tip is to walk along the 50-metre-high footbridge and take in the views of the Nervión river and the Cantabrian sea.

17.  Grúa Carola

What is it? A crane belonging to the old Euskalduna shipyard. Why go? So the story goes, one of the most beautiful women in Bilbao used to cross the estuary on a boat every day, driving all the shipyard workers mad. A foreman saw the effect this woman had on his workers, and decided to buy her a car so she wouldn’t have to cross the estuary every day. The woman’s name was Carola, and this crane was named after her.

18.  Mural Soñar

What is it? An enormous mural painted on a building in Olabeaga. Why go? Soñar means ‘to dream’ in Spanish. Very few words, no matter the language, have the same impact as soñar and this mural invites you to close your eyes and simply believe. Created by an artist group called SpY, the mural became one of Bilbao’s most iconic landmarks overnight and gave life to the Olabeaga neighbourhood. The mural is visible from many places in the city, but its size and characteristic font make seeing it up close worthwhile.

19.  Estadio de San Mamés

What is it? The home of one of the world’s most iconic football teams. Why go? A place of worship of a different kind, San Mamés is a holy site for those who worship at the altar of Athletic Bilbao. Fans gather every other week in the hope of seeing their beloved team win at a stadium that blends modern facilities with traditional passion. And even if you don’t happen to be in the city when there’s a match on, the stadium has its own museum where you can learn about the legendary club’s history and successes.

20.  Parque Etxebarria

What is it? Bilbao’s biggest park. Why go? Located on the surrounding hillsides, Parque Etxebarria offers amazing views out over the city. To get to the top, you can take an elevator, drive or climb the 300 steps from Plaza Unamuno. The park still features an original factory chimney symbolising the city’s industrial past, though it’s better known for its huge patches of grass and picnic areas. It’s the perfect place to get away from the city noise and watch the sunset behind the hills.

21.  Gran Via

What is it? The city’s main street. Why go? Bilbao’s Gran Vía is one of the most beautiful boulevards in Spain. Magnificent buildings, shops, trees and bars full of delicious pintxos are all part of its beauty. Despite being the city’s most important street, a significant part of it is restricted to pedestrian access: there’s no traffic from Plaza Elíptica to Plaza Circular, so strolling is a total delight. The boulevard’s full name (Gran Vía de Don Diego López de Haro) is in honour of Bilbao’s founder, so be sure to look out for the statue of Don Diego López holding the ‘Carta Constitucional down the boulevard’s eastern end.

22.  Azkuna Zentroa

What is it? A cultural and leisure space in Bilbao’s city centre. Why go? Housed in La Alhóndiga, a ground-breaking modernist building, Azkuna Zentroa was initially designed as a wine storage facility. Architect Philippe Stark reinvented the space into the leisure and cultural hotspot it is today: an original and dreamy structure where more than 43 pillars take you on a journey through the relationships between art, culture and everyday life.

23.  England in Bilbao

What is it? An English-style street with facades painted in lively colours. Why go? One of Bilbao’s best-kept secrets, Zubeola Avenue in the Irala neighbourhood features a mosaic of colourful facades. While some of the houses are built in a French style, the English-style houses are better known. The neighbourhood emerged after a local baker wanted to improve working-class living conditions, so he reproduced housing styles of other European countries. A century later, the houses are no less remarkable.

24.  Puerto Viejo de Algorta

What is it? A traditional fisherman’s neighbourhood. Why go? Located in Getxo, a village 10-minute drive from Bilbao, Puerto Viejo is a unique and picturesque sight. Once a fishing village, nowadays it serves as a leisure hotspot where people often eat quisquillas and caracolinos while enjoying the views of Ereaga beach. Narrow streets, white houses, small squares and secret corners make it one of Bizkaia’s most beautiful neighbourhoods. The Basque Country has long had strong connections with the sea, so walking through Puerto Viejo can feel like travelling back in time.

25.  San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

What is it? A small chapel on an island, accessible only by a bridge. Why go? Gaztelugatxe might be best known to some for its role as Dragonstone – home of Daenerys Targaryen – in Game of Thrones. For everyone else, it’s still the Basque Country’s crown jewel: an absolute must if you’re in Bilbao and the most visited tourist attraction in the city after the Guggenheim Museum. A tiny island linked to the cliffs by a narrow stone bridge, the chapel at the top is only accessible via 241 stairs. Once you’ve made it to the top, ring the bell three times and make a wish. Trust us; it is worth the effort.

Bilbao is a vibrant port city located within Northern Spain’s Basque Country and is widely known for its impressive mix of art, food, and culture. That said, the city is on the lesser-known side as most tourists opt to visit Madrid and Barcelona instead. Thus, you might be wondering, “Is Bilbao worth visiting?”

As someone who has explored the vibrant streets of this Spanish gem and delved into its unique cultural offerings, I’ll share my honest thoughts and experiences with you. By the end of this post, you’ll hopefully have all the information you need to determine whether or not Bilbao is worth adding to your travel itinerary!

I’ll cut to the chase, my genuine, albeit subjective, perspective is that Bilbao is absolutely worth visiting! Even after visiting 25+ countries, this city is still easily within my top 10 favorite cities that I’ve been to in Europe… ( Nice and Stockholm are two others in case you were wondering LOL)

That said, I know that countless travel bloggers will say a place is worth visiting without explaining why or why not to visit. I don’t know about you, but I don’t think it’s particularly helpful since not really every place is worth visiting. I mean we all have different interests right?

So, in the spirit of painting a full picture of the city and helping you make an informed decision, let’s delve into some cases where Bilbao may or may not be worth visiting.

Bilbao Is Worth Visiting If…

You are an art and architecture lover . For me, this was the main reason I initially wanted to visit Bilbao. I had learned about some of the artwork in the city in an art history class and wanted to see it in person.

Little did I know, the city is full of contrasting colors and whimsical designs. Oftentimes, I would just be walking around the city and find myself captivated by the innovative and contemporary design of a bridge or the Gothic architecture of a cathedral. There’s such an eclectic mixture of architectural styles.

Another reason Bilbao may be worth visiting is if you want to venture beyond the typical tourist path. I know Bilbao isn’t exactly Andorra or Liechtenstein small, but it does provide an enchanting escape from more popular Spanish destinations like Madrid, Barcelona , and Seville.

And whereas those cities can be a bit overwhelming with all the noise, Bilbao is pretty tranquil and peaceful to walk around. I won’t go as far as to say you won’t hear any noise and cars honking, but there’s a nice balance of being an urban setting without too much commotion.

Similarly, Bilbao offers a refreshing and authentic experience. I’m not implying that you won’t get that in other places. But, if you’re in a huge city like Paris or Montreal , it’s basically mission impossible to see everything in a shorter trip. With Bilbao, you just need a few days in the city to feel as though you’ve actually experienced the local culture.

So, if any of these scenarios resonate with you, then I’d argue that Bilbao would most definitely be worth visiting. But, even if they don’t, there are still tons of other reasons to visit, which I’ll dive into later! 😉

Bilbao Is Not Worth Visiting If…

As much as I enjoy Bilbao and its unique allure, I know it’s not the place for everyone. So aside from the scenarios above not interesting you, here are some other cases where Bilbao may not be worth visiting.

If your ideal vacation revolves around sun-soaked beaches and coastal relaxation, Bilbao may not be the ideal destination for you. While it is technically considered to be located on the coast, the city itself does not offer expansive beaches for leisurely sunbathing or water activities. Therefore, if you’re after a beach-centric vacation, I’d recommend San Sebastian , Barcelona, or even nearby locations that are outside of Spain, like beautiful Biarritz , Marseille, or Nice .

Likewise, for those seeking adrenaline-pumping adventures and exhilarating activities, Bilbao is probably not going to be what you’re looking for. While the city does offer outdoor pursuits such as hiking, biking around the city , and exploring nearby natural landscapes, it’s a far cry from a thrill-seeker’s paradise. A better option would be Interlaken, Switzerland , or Austria if you crave high-intensity adventures.

Finally, if you’re in search of a bustling metropolis with an endless array of activities and attractions, Bilbao might be a bit boring for you. I mean the city has its fair share of cultural landmarks, museums, and vibrant neighborhoods to explore, but it is not on the same scale as Paris or even Lyon . So, if you thrive in an environment brimming with non-stop action, you might find Bilbao’s relatively smaller size and laid-back atmosphere less appealing.

Ultimately, this is just my take on the city based on my experiences. It’s more than possible you’ll have a completely different perspective.

Thus, I’d encourage you to keep researching until you can comfortably and confidently decide whether or not Bilbao is worth it for you!

For those who aren’t sure where Bilbao is located, here’s a little map you can reference. The purple pin represents Bilbao, and directly to right of the Bilbao is the idyllic town of San Sebastian. Since San Sebastian is only a little over an hour away by car, it’s a pretty popular day trip from Bilbao. Just above that pin is Biarritz , which is a beach town in France that’s less than a 2-hour drive away. It’s often referred to as the surf capital of France since it has a thriving surf culture and pretty decent waves year-round!

The uppermost pin on the right side is Toulouse, the capital of France’s Occitanie Region . The city of Toulouse is about 4.5 hours away from Bilbao via car and is commonly referred to as the space capital of France since a couple of space agencies and companies are based there.

The pin below Toulouse is Andorra. This is not a city, but a very small country that I discovered most people don’t even know exists 😂. Andorra is known for being a tax haven and offering visitors gorgeous views of the Pyrenees mountains. That said, its mountainous location makes it harder to access, but you can still reach it easily from Barcelona . Then on the bottom right, we have Barcelona, which is 6.25 hours from Bilbao. This is the most visited city in Spain , and I like to say Gaudi has his finger wrapped around Barcelona since lots of his works are featured across the city LOL. Finally, the bottom left pin represents Madrid, Spain’s beautiful capital city. It’s ~4.25 hours from Bilbao. Therefore, it would be doable to transit between the two for a weekend trip!

Alright, so remember when I said there are plenty of reasons to visit Bilbao… Well, I can give you quite a few more…like I said, it’s a city I really enjoy. 😅 So if you need more excuses to travel, simply want to learn more about Bilbao before planning your trip, or are just curious about the city, here are 10 additional reasons why I think Bilbao is worth visiting!

1. The Iconic Guggenheim Museum

Without a doubt, one of the biggest draws to the city is the iconic Guggenheim Museum ! This is Bilbao’s most famous landmark and is a true testament to the city’s dedication to art and innovation.

It was designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, who is also attributed with designing the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Prague’s Dancing House, and the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris — all of which I’ve seen in person and are truly spectacular!

But out of all his pieces, the Guggenheim is my absolute favorite. This architectural masterpiece boasts a striking titanium exterior that features deconstructionist architecture and glistens in the sunlight, mesmerizing visitors from the moment they lay their eyes on it.

And, of course, there are many exhibits within the museum. Inside, you’ll be treated to an ever-changing collection of thought-provoking contemporary art. When I visited, my friend and I spent 3 hours just wandering through the different halls and engaging with some of the more interactive areas.

So, if you’re an art enthusiast with an appreciation for innovative designs, the Guggenheim Museum alone is reason enough to make Bilbao a must-visit destination!

And I know that sounds dramatic, but this museum was genuinely the main reason I was so keen on visiting. The Guggenheim is my favorite art history piece I studied and proved to be everything and more.

The Economist even created a term known as “The Bilbao Effect ,” which essentially describes how a striking and “imaginatively designed museum” can drastically improve a city through increased tourism. So if you end up coming just to see the museum, you wouldn’t be alone lol. Over a million tourists visit Bilbao to see the Guggenheim!

2. Tasting the Culinary Delights

Another reason to visit Bilbao is that it’s a food lover’s paradise, where every meal becomes a feast for the senses.

And speaking from seeing all the awards hanging on the walls of restaurants, the city is widely celebrated for its exceptional Basque cuisine, offering some of the finest in Spain!

From delectable pintxos, which are the Basque version of tapas to more than 10 Michelin-starred restaurants concentrated in this city, Bilbao offers an array of flavors and culinary experiences that will leave your taste buds in awe.

So, if you love Basque food or would like to discover the culinary delights of this city and region, then I’d say you have a pretty good reason to visit.

Oh, and there’s really an eclectic mix of tapas bars all over the city! I suggest taking a culinary tour with a local to easily navigate through the city’s vibrant streets, sample the best traditional dishes, and savor all the rich Basque flavors. Plus, since wine and food go hand in hand, you’ll get to sample a few regional wines, beers, and ciders at each place as you learn about the city’s history !

3. Bilbao Is a Cultural Hub

Beyond the Guggenheim Museum and discovering Basque culture through its food, the city is dotted with galleries, theaters, and music venues. This offers visitors the opportunity to participate in an array of artistic and cultural experiences. For instance, you can immerse yourself in the vibrant arts scene by attending concerts, theater productions, dance performances, or any of the many art exhibitions. I’d even recommend stopping by the beautiful Teatro Arriaga, or Bilbao Opera House, just to admire the architecture! Alternatively, spend some time strolling through the many stalls at the Ribera Market. As one of Europe’s largest covered markets, it has been a bustling center of commerce since the 19th century and holds a great amount of historical and cultural significance. My friend and I even found ourselves just appreciating the architectural beauty of the market building itself and soaking up the lively atmosphere!

This 16th-century basilica is dedicated to the patron saint of Biscay, the Virgin of Begoña, and is an emblem of Bilbao’s religious devotion. And the basilica itself showcases a mix of architectural styles, including Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque.

So whether you are keen on delving into the arts or the historical side of the city, Bilbao is a diverse cultural hub.

4. Array of Fine Wines

For those who don’t know, Bilbao is the gateway city to the prolific wine region of Rioja. This picturesque area is home to over 550 wineries, ranging from boutique and family-run wineries to wineries that are famous for their striking architecture.

And with just a short 1.5-hour drive, you can immerse yourself in this prosperous wine region and savor the rich flavors and aromas of Rioja wines.

Plus, you’ll pass through a medieval town or two on your way, allowing you to experience more than just Bilbao.

So, if you want to learn about the unique winemaking processes, tour some incredible wineries , and of course, indulge in tastings of exquisite vintages, I’d recommend adding Bilbao to your itinerary because of its proximity to Rioja. Oh, and this isn’t to say you can’t taste fine wines without leaving Bilbao. Many of the food tours in Bilbao offer at least one wine tasting, if not a few.

5. Surrounded by Natural Beauty

Situated in the heart of the Basque Country, Bilbao is surrounded by gorgeous natural landscapes. And for those looking for a little reprieve from the urban environment, you can find one in the nearby mountains.

For example, a popular tourist attraction is the Monte Artxanda. This small mountain range is about 300 meters above the city and offers sweeping views of the cityscape below. To reach the top, visitors can either hike up by food or take a convenient ride on a funicular to the top .

Upon reaching the top, you’ll find a lovely park and some benches perfect for an afternoon picnic. There is also an art piece referred to as “Fingerprint structure” and a couple of designated observation decks that offer the best panoramic views of the city. And if you get hungry, you can walk beyond the park to find some restaurants and bars.

Either way, Bilbao is nice in that you can experience the best of both worlds—urban city life and serene nature!

6. A Riverfront Promenade

Along with the mountains that encompass Bilbao, the Nervión River is another feature of the city I enjoyed. It gracefully winds its way through the heart of the city and offers a pleasant setting for leisurely strolls. You’ll also notice that both sides are lined with cafes, restaurants, and parks, creating a serene atmosphere where you can relax, people-watch, and soak in the city’s ambiance. Not to mention, strolling along the river provides an easy way to see a lot of the city’s best highlights. For example, just next to the river, you’ll pass by the Guggenheim Museum, Zubizuri Bridge, and Palacio Euskalduna .

Personally, I enjoyed running along the river early in the morning and seeing so many other runners out there. And since I could just follow the river and bike paths, I didn’t have to worry about navigating winding streets.

So, whether you choose to take a leisurely walk, join a bike tour along the riverfront , or embark on a boat ride , the riverfront promenade offers a delightful environment to unwind and enjoy the city’s charm.

7. Excellent Transportation Network

When it comes to transportation, Bilbao has a fantastic transportation network, making it incredibly convenient for visitors to explore the city and its surroundings.

The city’s public transportation system includes a modern metro network, trains, trams, and buses. Therefore, getting around Bilbao is a breeze, allowing you to effortlessly navigate the city’s various attractions, neighborhoods, and cultural sites.

Even getting from Bilbao International Airport is easy since there’s a specific bus line. It runs between the airport and the city center every 20 minutes and only takes 20 minutes.

And knowing what a pain it is to go from Paris’s Charles de Gaulle Airport to the city center via public transport, I love Bilbao so much for this.

8. Convenient Location

Bilbao’s convenient location is another reason the city may be worth visiting. Its prime location provides the perfect opportunity to do a day trip or two!

The most popular day trips from Bilbao are to San Sebastian . San Sebastian is known for its beautiful beaches and thriving culinary scene . Meanwhile, as I mentioned previously, the Rioja wine region invites visitors to sample a wide array of prestigious wines.

But, if you want to travel to even smaller towns, you can visit the charming coastal towns of Gaztelugatxe and Santander. Gaztelugatxe takes less than an hour to reach while Santander is 1.5 hours outside of Bilbao.

Alternatively, you could opt to spend a day exploring the idyllic Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. This coastal region is about an hour and 20 minutes outside the city via public transport.

Here, you’ll find an abundance of golden sandy beaches, perfect for surfing and relaxing. You’ll also have the chance to spot lots of wildlife in the wetlands and along the coastal cliffs.

Whether you prefer a coastal adventure, a mountain retreat, or an exploration of Basque culture and heritage, Bilbao’s excellent location allows you to access a diverse range of experiences easily!

9. A Clean City

Ok, something that I think is very underrated and underappreciated is how clean Bilbao is. Maybe it just had to do with the time I was visiting or something, but it was remarkably clean when I visited. At one point, my friend and I were sitting at a café and sipping on some drinks. Moments later, we see a city worker vacuuming the streets. There weren’t even a bunch of leaves or lots of trash. It was the first time I had seen someone literally vacuuming the streets… So in my books, Bilbao is basically the gold standard for cleanliness. Again, maybe it was just the time I was there, but the city was remarkably clean.

10. Festivals and Celebrations

Finally, Bilbao comes alive with an array of festivals and cultural events throughout the year that showcases the Basque spirit and traditions.

For example, Aste Nagusia, which means “The Great Week,” is the largest annual festival that celebrates Our Lady of Begoña. It begins the first Saturday after August 19th and goes on for 9 days, filling the streets with music, dances, and fireworks.

Another major festival is Bilbao BBK Live, which takes place in early July.  This pop and rock music festival features some of the largest artists in the music industry. As a result, the 3-day festival receives more than 100,000 attendees, making it one of the biggest festivals in Spain.

For the 2023 season, Florence + The Machine, Arctic Monkeys, and Chemical Brothers are some of the artists headlining. See the full lineup and event details here . And then, there’s the festival of Santo Tomas! On 21st December, locals flood the Plaza Nueva as 200 local farmers who generally live outside of the city come to sell their goods! It’s a tradition that dates back to the 19th century and helps bring the city together just before the holidays!

If you’re feeling convinced that you should visit Bilbao, I would recommend going between June – October.

During this time of the year, the weather is usually mild, with average high temperatures in the high 70s °F (21°C) and average low temperatures in the low-mid 50s°F (10 °C). Thus, the temperatures are pleasant for exploring the city’s attractions and the days are long.

Plus, rain is at its least during this period. That’s not to say there won’t be any rain because even during the summer months, Bilbao sees a fair amount of rain. But, if you get lucky, you may have a completely sunny trip.

And then, as I mentioned in the previous section, Bilbao truly comes alive in the summertime with festivals and concerts! Just remember that summer is often the busiest and most crowded time in Bilbao. So, be prepared for larger crowds and higher accommodation prices.

In the beginning, I mentioned one of the best parts of Bilbao is that you only need a few days to feel like you’ve actually seen the city… Well, with this in mind, I’d recommend spending a minimum of two full days in Bilbao! This is the ideal amount of time to see most, if not all, of the city’s main highlights without feeling pressed for time.

But, if you want to fit in a day trip or two, I’d aim for four full days. In fact, if I were planning the perfect trip for a friend with the knowledge I have now, I’d recommend spending 4 days in Bilbao, with a day trip to Rioja and Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. And then I’d tell them to spend a couple of days in San Sebastian. But, that’s just me because I’m a sucker for small coastal beach destinations with amazing food. 😅

Also, you’ll be happy to know that housing is pretty affordable in Bilbao, at least compared to a LOT of other Western European places. So, if you’re looking to stay in a fancy hotel, this is a pretty good place to do it! 👀

As the unofficial capital of Basque Country, Bilabo is known for many things. But, to name a few, the city is known for being home to the Guggenheim Museum, its tasty gastronomic food scene that features all kinds of pintxos, and for being an industrial hub. After all, the city was created around its steel and shipbuilding industries.

Yes! Bilbao is a very flat and walkable city. The only thing is that if you have mobility and want to go to the top of Monte Artxanda, you should opt to use the funicular. And if you want to spend less time in transit, you can always opt to use the public transit system!

Honestly, it depends on your interests. Bilbao is better in terms of its art culture scene and accessibility in going to other places since there’s an international airport. But, San Sebastian is better suited for those looking for a beach destination or who want to intimately experience Basque culture.

Overall, Bilbao is a city filled with colorful and innovative architecture, delicious Basque food, and gorgeous views. It promises visitors a serene urban environment and a rich cultural experience.

And with its efficient and expansive transportation network, you should be able to explore Bilbao and its surroundings with ease.

That said, I know the city doesn’t fit every traveler’s specific desires. So regardless of whether you think Bilbao is worth visiting or not, I hope this post has been insightful and you’ve learned a little more about what this lovely city can offer.
