The best time to visit Burgundy is between September and November when the weather cools and the vineyards feature an array of autumn colors. Winters in Burgundy are cold and dark (average lows hover in the 30s), though December, January and February tend to be the best times to find deals on flights and accommodations. Spring is another sweet shoulder season, while June to August are considered peak season thanks to the warm, dry weather. Keep in mind: Temperatures can vary widely across the region; you'll want to pack layers if you plan to visit multiple towns.

• Stick to one city Burgundy is filled with marvelous cities and villages, from regal Dijon to the cathedral-dominated Autun, but the transportation costs of bouncing around will stack up quickly.
• Travel in the low season Wintertime can be cold and bleak in Burgundy, but the money you can potentially save on accommodations and airfare should cheer you up.

Culture & Customs

Burgundy has a rich history that dates back to the 5th century, when the Burgundians – a Scandinavian people from a southern stretch of the Baltic Sea – settled the region. But it was not until the 9th century that the region really started to flourish, with cities like Dijon on the rise and what would be famous works of art and architecture being produced. 

The official language in Burgundy is French, and though you'll find that many in the tourist industry speak English, it's best to learn a few phrases or even pick up a phrasebook to help you get around. "Merci" is thank you and "s'il vous plaît" is please. If you're at a loss for words, politely ask the waiter or shop attendant "Pouvez-vous m'aider?" (Can you help me?) or "Parlez-vous anglais?" (Do you speak English?). Another helpful phrase: "Excusez-moi" (Pardon or excuse me). 

In France, the currency is the euro (1 euro equals about $1.23), and travelers can exchange their dollars for euros at the airport exchange booths or kiosks throughout Burgundy. Since the euro to U.S. dollar exchange rate fluctuates, be sure to check what the current exchange rate is before you go. When it comes to tipping, visitors should note that service charges are usually included on restaurant bills, though it is common to round out the bill with a small tip. Tipping hotel staff a euro or two for their services is also customary.

What to Eat

Burgundy is known for a number of culinary delights, including its famous Dijon mustard, which mustard-maker Jean Naigeon first created back in the 1750s. Boeuf bourguignon , a traditional Burgundy-style beef stew later popularized by famous chef Julia Child, is another staple. And arguably the world's most pungent cheese, Époisses, hails from a Burgundy city by the same name. 

Many travelers make Dijon their home base since it provides easy access to the towns and villages that spool out from the region's capital. Some of Dijon's traveler-approved eateries include Les Pré aux Clercs , L'Arôme and La Maison des Cariatides for a fancy French meal, and Café de l'Industrie and Café Gourmand for bistro fare. Of course, no matter where you base yourself, you're bound to stumble upon a memorable gastronomic experience thanks to the region's rich ingredients and Michelin-starred chefs. 

Of course, Burgundy is also a center for winemaking – and there are tens of thousands of acres devoted to vineyards growing chardonnay and pinot noir grapes across Burgundy's Côte de Beaune, Côte de Nuits, Chablis, Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnais regions. Driving the historic 37-mile Route des Grand Crus is a great way to get an overview of some of the heavyweights, though taking a curated wine tour is another way. If you consider yourself an oenophile, you'll want to take time in Beaune to visit the Musée du Vin to learn about the region's wine-making tools, tradition and art. Beaune's Marché aux Vins is another must-see if you're looking for a more low-key tasting or tour than a full-day wine tour can provide. Tastings start at 9 euros (around $11) per person.

Getting Around Burgundy

The best way to get around Burgundy is by car and train. These quick and efficient modes of transportation will get you where you want to go on your own timetable. There are also networks of buses throughout Burgundy, and taxis are an option, too, though they are far from affordable. Cycling is another increasingly popular and scenic means of traveling between villages or wineries. 

To reach Burgundy, many travelers fly into Paris ' Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), Paris Orly Airport (ORY) or Lyon-Saint Exupery Airport (LYS), and either take trains to the Burgundy region or rent a car and drive. Burgundy sits about 200 miles southeast of Paris and about 120 miles north of Lyon. If you're hoping to take the train into the region, you'll find a high frequency of trains running from Paris to Dijon, the region's capital. Trains from Paris to Dijon take approximately 90 minutes, with tickets starting at $18. From Dijon, you can hop local trains to other hot spots within the region, including Mâcon, Beaune and Montbard, among others.

Burgundy Itinerary – 3 Days In Burgundy, France

I love visiting France, and although I travel there regularly to visit family in the Alsace or to ski in the Alps, I have to admit I had seen very little of the rest of the country. However, I have recently visited visit two new areas; Provence and Burgundy. I knew of the famous Burgundy wines, but really knew nothing else about the region as a holiday destination, so I was excited to explore this lesser-known area of France and enjoy 3 days in Burgundy.

If you’re into history, then Burgundy is a great area to visit. It was once wealthier than the whole of France, and Dijon was home to the Dukes of Burgundy, who built beautiful palaces and castles across the city and region. In fact, there are more chateaus in Burgundy than in any other region in France!

3 Day Burgundy Itinerary

Where to stay in burgundy.

Burgundy is made up of four ‘departments’: Côte-d’Or, Saône-et-Loire, Yonne and Nièvre, with the Morvan Regional Park in the centre. If you have 3 days in Burgundy, then I recommend staying in Côte-d’Or for at least part of the trip, as this department contains both Dijon and Beaune. Depending on how much you like changing accommodation, you can base yourself in one location and take day trips to the other towns and villages, or you can travel around the region staying in different areas (or do a bit of both!). This 3 day Burgundy itinerary stays in a different location each night, to maximise your time in the region, with an optional 4th night if you have time.

How to Get to Burgundy

Burgundy is situated slightly east of the centre of France. The closest airport is Dole-Jura, which is 50 km southeast of Dijon, Burgundy’s capital. I took the train from London St Pancras, changing in Paris to the high-speed TGV train, which takes an hour and 40 minutes to reach Dijon. There is also the option to change trains in Lille. You can book tickets on thetrainline.com .

Getting Around Burgundy

This is a 3 day driving itinerary for Burgundy, and I really do recommend hiring a car to see the most of the region, as many of the small villages have limited public transport. There are car hire companies at Dijon station and airport, making it convenient to pick up a car as soon as you arrive.

If you don’t want to drive, the train between Dijon and Beaune takes 20 minutes and costs €8, so it’s easy to get between the two without transport.

3/4 Day Burgundy Itinerary

Day 1 – Dijon

Arrive in Dijon and collect your hire car . Head to your accommodation, park the car, check in and spend the rest of the day exploring the city on foot. The city centre is full of gorgeous buildings, many of which are open to visitors including the Cathedral, the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Fine Art Museum) and The Church of Notre Dame. The Market des Halles building was designed by Eiffel Tower creator Gustave Eiffel, and is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, selling produce from across the region.

In the middle of the city is the Place de la Libération, a gorgeous semicircular plaza with fountains in the centre and restaurants surrounding it. A good spot for lunch or an evening meal.

A short walk from here is the Tour Phillipe du Bon, a tower with impressive views over the city.

Night 1 – Dijon

Spend the night at Hotel des Ducs , which is in a great location, right in the heart of the city.

Day 2 – Beaune

On the second day of your Burgundy trip, drive to Beaune. The pretty town is one of Burgundy’s most popular destinations. Its main attraction (other than the quaint cobbled streets), is the Hotel Dieu , a hospital built in 1443 to treat the poor of Burgundy. It’s an incredibly beautiful gothic-style building and was treating patients until 1970. It’s now a museum, telling the story of over 5 centuries of care for Burgundian residents.

One of Burgundy’s most famous exports is Dijon Mustard, which takes its name from the city of Dijon. The Fallot Mustard factory in Beaune is open to visitors and shows you the process used to make the mustard, as well as giving you the opportunity to make some yourself and try the many varieties they produce.

Beaune is also home to a Wine Museum, which offers an in-depth history of the region’s winemaking, including the old machinery used to produce wine.

Night 2 – Beaune/Abbaye de la Bussière

If you’ve enjoyed a little wine in Beaune, then spend the night here. There are some lovely hotels including the 4-star Hotel Le Cep. Alternatively, drive 35 minutes to Abbaye de la Bussière .

Abbaye de la Bussière is a 12th-century abbey that has been converted into an upmarket hotel. Surrounded by stunning gardens and filled with impressive sculptures, the hotel also has a Michelin star restaurant.

Day 3 – Châteauneuf-en-Auxois

Check out of your accommodation and drive to Châteauneuf-en-Auxois for day three of your Burgundy holiday.

The impressive Chateau de Chateauneuf is located up on a hill in the fortified village of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois, with spectacular views of the countryside below. The village is incredibly picturesque and is listed as one of ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages De France’ – the most beautiful villages in France. A visit to the castle costs €5 and includes the opportunity to see the bedrooms, bathrooms, and lounges as well as learn about the history of the chateau.

At this point, you have two options:

Option 1: Drive back to Dijon via Flavigny-sur-Ozerain (details below), drop off the car and take the train back to London.

Option 2: Add an additional day to your trip and continue the itinerary below:

If you’re a big foodie, now is the opportunity to visit a 2 star Michelin restaurant. One of France’s most famous chefs, the late Bernard Loiseau ran a hugely successful restaurant Relais Bernard Loiseau in Saulieu before he died, which has now been taken over by his wife Dominique.

It’s approximately a 40 minute drive from Chateau de Chateauneuf and just seven minutes from your accommodation for the night.

Dominique has since opened two other restaurants under his name in Burgundy, in Beaune and Dijon, so if you’re doing the three-day itinerary you can choose one of these instead.

Night 3 – Morvan Regional Park

Drive to Morvan Regional Park and stay at Domaine de la Pierre Ronde .

Domaine de la Pierre Ronde is located on a gorgeous lake in the Morvan and has Teepees, Yurts and Hobbit houses. I stayed in the latter, and I absolutely loved it.

The detail that has gone into the houses is amazing and they are incredibly furnished. I stayed in the two-person house, which has one large room consisting of a double bed, roll-top bath and lounge area. The toilets and showers are separate, as is the breakfast yurt! This is a great base to explore the 173,000-hectare park.

Alternatively, stay in Salieu, so you don’t need to drive after lunch. Relais Bernard Loiseau has beautiful accommodation and is part of Relais & Châteaux. There is a spa and wellness complex and an outdoor swimming pool.

Day 4 – Flavigny-sur-Ozerain & Dijon

After a restful sleep, make your way to Flavigny-sur-Ozerain. This is another ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages De France’. In fact, it’s so beautiful, it was chosen as the filming location for the 2000 film ‘Chocolate’ starring Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche. The tiny village is home to an old abbey, which has been used for centuries to make aniseed candy. Now a successful factory , you can take a tour of the abbey ruins and watch the candy being made.

Continue onto Dijon, drop off your car and head back to London on the train. Or alternatively, continue your French road trip and drive to another region in France.

What to Drink in Burgundy

Burgundy is renowned for its wine , and the region produces some of the most expensive wines in the world. But there are plenty of affordable wines too. Burgundy has two grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The wines made from these two grapes are then categorised into four classifications:

The majority of the wines are called ‘Regional’ wines and are labelled ‘Bourgogne’. These are made from vineyards across the region.

The next level up is ‘Village’ wines or ‘Communal’. These are usually named after the town or village where the grapes are grown.

Premier Cru

Premier Cru wines are grown in special plots known as ‘climats’, which have recently been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status.

Grand Cru is regarded as the highest classification, and these wines are of course the most expensive. There are 33 Grand Cru vineyards and these produce only 1% of Burgundy’s wines.

Finally, there are five wine growing regions within Burgundy: Chablis, Côte du Nuits, Côte du Beaune, Côte Chalonaise and Maconnaise. If that all sounds a little confusing, you can take a wine tasting course to brush up on your wine knowledge (and to enjoy sampling all the different wines!). Sensation Vin in Beaune offers a variety of classes or you can head straight to the vineyards, who will happily teach you about the wines of Burgundy.

The 60km ‘Route des Grands Crus’ (Road of Great Wines), runs from Dijon to Santenay, passing through the Cote du Nuits and Cote du Beaune regions. You can drive the route, stopping off at vineyards along the way, or if you don’t fancy driving (and want to enjoy a little more of the wine!) then you can also hire bikes and cycle the “véloroute” – 22km of bike trails through the vines.

What to Eat in Burgundy

The French are renowned for their cuisine, and there is certainly no shortage of restaurants in Burgundy, with 29 Michelin star restaurants in the region. Including the aforementioned restaurants by Bernard Loiseau.

When it comes to local produce, Burgundy also has a great deal to offer. The region produces excellent meats, including Charollais beef, which is often used in the region’s famous dish – Beef Bourguignon. This is a stew made with red wine, mushrooms, bacon and onions. Similarly, another popular dish of the region is Oeufs en Meurette, which is poached eggs served in a bourguignon sauce.

For the more adventurous, snails (escargot) are regularly found on the menu across the region, and there are freshwater fish, pates, wild mushrooms and delicious cheeses in abundance!

I visited Burgundy with very few expectations and I really fell in love with the region. Considering the amazing food and wine, stunning castles and beautiful scenery, I can’t believe more people aren’t heading to this part of France. But in a way, that’s another thing that makes it so lovely as there are few tourists and it feels like a very authentic region of France.

Mention Burgundy – or Bourgogne as the French call this enticing chunk of la belle France – and whittling away hours sipping velvety reds and aromatic whites spring to mind. But there is far more to the nation’s premier wine-producing region than savoring prestigious vintages between vines or reveling in cloud wine over gourmet lunch pairings. 

Handsome towns, Instagram-star medieval villages and ancient abbatial communities begging slow exploration pepper this predominantly rural region. To navigate Burgundy’s natural green labyrinth of emerald vineyards, shimmering mustard fields and dense dark forests, plug these ‘best places to visit’ into your device and hit go.

Explore Burgundy’s capital

Best city for art and architecture.

Multi-colored patterned tiled roofs have been a status symbol in Burgundy since the 13th century and craning your neck upwards to gorge on the shiny tapestry of zig-zags. diamonds and other geometrical motifs crafted in ceramic-glazed terracotta is a Dijon highlight. Signature rooftops aside, the regional capital overflows with striking medieval and Renaissance architecture. Municipal museums offer free admission and one of France’s best fine-arts museums languishes inside the monumental Gothic-to-Classical palace where Charles the Bold and other Burgundy dukes partied in their heyday. For a city overview, scale the neighboring Tour Philippe Le Bon .

Burgundian wine culture seeps out of every handsome nook and cranny in Beaune , a celebrated wine town in the vineyard-carpeted Côte d’Or, even more beau (beautiful) than its name suggests. The centerpiece Hôtel-Dieu des Hospices de Beaune , created as a charity hospital in 1443, is a Gothic architectural masterpiece. Its dazzling polychrome tiled roof alone is enough to stop you in your tracks and drool, while some of the world's most expensive wines repose in its wine cellars.

The entire town feels like a living wine cellar in fact, with winetasting and cellar-tour options galore: the informative Maison des Climats is an excellent introduction. Watch for the much-anticipated opening of the Cité des Vins et de Climats de Bourgogne – split across wine towns Beaune, Chablis and Mâcon – in summer 2022. Beaune’s other ‘Don’t Miss!’ is a poke around Burgundy’s last remaining, family-run mustard maker where mustard seeds are milled by stone to make Real McCoy, Dijon AOP mustard.

Time-travel in Pays d’Axois

West of Dijon, the picturesque towpaths of the Canal de Bourgogne meander into Pays d'Auxois. An unspoiled honeypot of uber-pretty hilltop villages, this rolling land of mustard fields and wooded hills begs a road trip – on foot, by bicycle, e-bike or four wheels. King of ‘les plus beaux villages’ (the most beautiful villages) is fortified hilltop Semur-en-Auxois, teetering on a granite spur in a hairpin bend of the meandering Armançon River. Châteauneuf-en-Auxois is another gorgeous spot to get lost in a cobweb of cobbled lanes laced with attractive houses.

Tucked into this verdant landscape is a twinset of exceptional historical sites: the tranquil, end-of-the-road Cistercian abbey of Fontenay (a Unesco World Heritage site no less) and the sensational MuséoParc Alésia , located on the very spot where Julius Caesar defeated Vercingétorix, chief of the Gauls, in 52 BCE.

Feel sweet in Flavigny

Best village for epicureans.

Visiting the family-run Anis de Flavigny sweet factory in the quaint village of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, a one-hour drive northeast of Dijon, is as much about lifting the lid on a centuries-old epicurean tradition as stuffing yourself silly with the hard-boiled, aniseed-flavored bonbons (sweets) for which the abbatial village is famed.

First crafted by Benedictine monks at 16th-century Abbaye de Flavigny in 1591, Les Anis de Flavigny still has its HQ at the abbey. The traditional sweet-making process, using natural ingredients (aniseed, beet sugar, plant extracts) remains unchanged. Fascinating guided visits explore the abbey’s Carolingian crypt and chapels, vaulted halls where the sweets were crafted in the 19th century, an interactive ‘laboratory of aromas’, and a museum displaying the sweet’s gorgeous trademark tins and packaging over the centuries. Tasting throughout is a given.

Catch the sunset in Noyers

Best village for a medieval vibe.

Watching the sun sink below the medieval battlements of the multi-turreted, walled village of Noyers-sur-Surein, 30km (18.6mi) southeast of Auxerre, is pure romance à la française. Nineteen of its original 23 defensive towers from the 13th century still stand and the enchanting cobbled lanes, gabled houses and archways ensnared within its ancient stone ramparts are straight off a movie set.

Mooch between art galleries and artisan workshops selling handcrafted leather accessories or illuminated parchments penned in vintage quill. In July catch a music recital in the church. Lunch on traditional Burgundian coq au vin and jambon au Chablis (wine-infused ham) at Les Millésimes or vegetarian at La Vieille Tour . End on a natural high with a walk from outside the clock-topped southern gate to Noyers’ ruined hilltop chateau: the bird’s eye view of rolling pastureland, wooded hills and the River Serein dancing below is spectacular.

Go green in Morvan

Best park for outdoor action.

When urban monuments and museums begin to exhaust, throw yourself into green Burgundy in its serene Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan. Brimming with flora, fauna and fantastic wildlife, this nature park is the place to take your foot off the pedal and slow right down in woodlands, lakes, farmland and frolicking hills. Begin in the main village, St-Brisson, where a scattering of small, well-considered eco-museums raise the curtain on local traditions, customs and landscapes.

The Maison du Parc in St-Brisson has all the gen on running wild in Morvan’s protected 3220 sq km (1243 sq mi). Hike, mountain bike, saddle up on horseback, try your hand at orienteering or fish for trout in the park’s smattering of lakes and rivers. Owl spotting tours after dark and boat trips on Lac des Settons are family favorites, as is a day out at the ancient Gaul-meets-modern-Burgundy, archeological site of Bibracte .

Get spiritual in Vézelay

Best village for mindful moments.

Follow pilgrims to Vézelay, a honeypot hilltop village of teeny doll-house proportions and Unesco world heritage. One of the main routes to Santiago de Compostela in Spain begins on the steep cobbled lanes here and that first heady glance of medieval Basilique Ste-Madeleine teetering on a rocky spur is enough to reboot faith in the most jaded of souls.

To escape the crowds, hit the signposted trail hidden behind the basilica to Chapelle Ste-Croix , nicknamed 'La Cordelle' after the rope belts of Franciscan monks who adopted this spot in the 13th century. The beautiful stone chapel, cloaked in climbing grapevines, was built to commemorate Bernard de Clairvaux' preaching of the Second Crusade here in 1146. It is a sublime place today for peaceful meditation in the deep Burgundian countryside.

Find Colette in La Puisaye

Best region for literary heritage.

French literature fans will enjoy the off-the-beaten-track journey in La Puisaye, a rural idyll of woods, winding creeks, canals and dark hills, 40 km (25mi) southwest of Auxerre. The area is best known as the birthplace of French writer Colette (1873–1954), author of La Maison de Claudine and Gigi and 50 other novels. Much of her work explores her rural Burgundian childhood, beautifully evoked in the Musée Colette , at home – as the enviably stylish French do so effortlessly well – in the village chateau in St-Saveur-en-Puisaye.

While you’re here, it would be remiss not to nip 7 km (4.3mi) south to Chantier Médiéval de Guédelon , an intriguing building site where artisans are rebuilding – as one does – a fortified castle using only 13th-century building techniques.

Burgundy is a beautiful wine region in eastern France with few cities and plenty of rural towns, chateaux and hiking trails. While you can easily spend a relaxing week discovering the whole region, our 2 or 3 days in Burgundy itinerary will cover the main highlights that you can experience in this gorgeous area.

From wine tasting and mustard-making to pottering around the old towns and discovering unique local treasures, Burgundy has plenty to offer visitors.

How Many Days in Burgundy?

Burgundy is a small region so you don’t need to spend weeks in the area to get a feel for the place or discover everything, so how many days to spend in Burgundy depends on your style of holiday.

If you’re short on time, you can have a fantastic time over just 2 days in the area, filling each day with a cultural and gastronomic experience in the city of Dijon or the town of Beaune, each bursting with exceptional food and history.

Those who have a bit more time to spare, 3 days would be ideal to see the main sights of the largest towns, and spend one day wine-tasting or visiting a picturesque chateaux that’s off the beaten track.

If you can take the time, over one week in Burgundy you can have a relaxing trip, visiting small villages such as the picturesque hilltop town of Vézelay, or the renowned white wine vineyards of Chablis from a base out in the countryside, or moving from campsite to campsite as you tour through the area as part of a Burgundy road trip.

Getting To & Around Burgundy

While famous for wine-making, Burgundy is not so famous internationally for tourists and isn’t as easily accessible as other major cities in France.

If you’re reaching Burgundy from afar, your best option is to fly into Paris , Geneva or Lyon and rent a car or take the train into the region.

Cities like Dijon, Auxerre and Maçon are all well connected with public transport, so you won’t have a problem taking a train over from the airport, whichever one you choose to fly into. You can view schedules here .

Plus, there are regular trains to smaller towns such as Beaune, and buses available for even shorter excursions to smaller villages. However, if you’re spending longer than a few days in the region, it’s advisable to rent a car.

There are wineries, quaint villages and chateaux scattered all over the Burgundy countryside, so if you want to discover some of its best kept secrets, you’ll need a car to get around and turn your holiday into a Burgundy road trip. You can browse car rental options here .

With your own car, you can then feel free to stop anywhere that piques your interest along the way, as well as stop by local boulangeries for fresh bread, and markets for your cheeses and meats, so you can have delicious picnics as you travel and keep your costs down.

2 to 3-Day Burgundy Itinerary

From mediaeval streets and colourful tiled roofs to exquisite pinot noir, mustard and, of course, beef bourguignon, Burgundy has everything for a wonderful trip over a few days to eat and drink at your leisure or have a packed itinerary of activities.

Our itinerary will take you around the region’s largest city of Dijon, complete with quaint old town and gastronomic heaven, to the smaller town of Beaune to the south with historic buildings and cultural activities.

We’ll then offer you a few day trip ideas so if you’re lucky enough to have 3 days to explore the region, you can choose whether food, history or culture wins out for your final day.

Day 1 – Dijon

Dijon is a beautiful mediaeval-turned-university city with plenty of vibrant activity taking place within the historic streets lined with half-timbered houses.

Whether you simply amble around the city on your first day, join a walking tour or get involved in a cooking class, you’re sure to have a great time.

Vieux Dijon

The best place to explore Dijon is on foot, wandering around the beautiful streets of the old town. From the iconic Place François Rude with its half-timbered houses and classic carousel to the central square Place de la Libération and all of the small streets in between.

Dijon’s tourist office offers maps of the city’s Owl Trail which you can follow to discover all of the hidden gems of the old town, marked by numbered plaques of owls, or you can simply wander around the pretty streets, discovering the city for yourself and following your nose and ears as the bustling city and mouth-watering treats are sure to draw you in.

You can wander from the enormous gothic Cathédrale Saint-Bénigne de Dijon and its neighbouring Romanesque Abbey now housing the Archaeology Museum of Dijon.

You can also follow the popular Rue de la Liberté, usually bustling with locals and tourists perusing the shops, into Place François Rude where you can stop for the famed pictures of Dijon as well as a coffee or lunch in a brasserie, before heading down Rue des Forges, with ornate buildings and boutique shops galore.

At the end of the street is another Gothic architectural wonder of Dijon, the Cathédrale de Notre Dame de Dijon, its facade lined with gargoyles and its interior covered with impressive historic paintings and stained glass windows.

At the back of the cathedral you’ll find the 16th-century owl sculpture that has become symbolic of Dijon, and the most important stop on the Owl Trail – don’t forget to stroke the owl’s head with your left hand while making a wish!

Just behind the cathedral is Dijon’s central marketplace, Les Halles. Take a look at all of the local produce before stopping by one of the neighbouring bars and restaurants for a fantastic and scenic lunch spot.

Place de la Libération and Palais des Ducs et des États de Bourgogne

Surrounded by restaurants and bars on one side and the Palace of the Dukes and Estates of Bourgogne on the other, Place de la Libération is a must-see stop on your itinerary for Burgundy.

The heart of Dijon since the 17th century, the square has seen many changes over the centuries yet still remains a popular spot for tourists and locals alike to meet and spend an afternoon in the sun or an evening with a glass of wine.

Next to the square is the beautiful private mansion Musée Magnin which is open to the public, but the highlight of this area is the incredible Palace of the Dukes and Estates of Bourgogne.

Having been rebuilt in parts and been extended over many centuries from its original construction in the 1300s to the final additions of the 1800s, the palace has a mix of architectural styles visible as you wander around the outside, creating the unique appearance that stands proudly in the square today.

Since the palace is so large, it has been transformed into two sections, the town hall of Dijon to one side, and the city’s Fine Arts Museum on the other, both of which can be visited.

The Fine Arts Museum is well worth a visit and not just because it’s free to enter and gaze upon the 1500 works of art contained within.

From the tombs of the former Dukes of Burgundy and Egyptian antiquities to Renaissance works from the likes of Rubens and more modern collections including Monet and Manet – the Fine Arts Museum contains a huge number of impressive paintings and sculptures that you can easily spend a whole afternoon in awe of.

The palace also has access to the Philippe Le Bon Tower, built in the 15th century and standing at 46-metres high to give incredible views over the city.

International Cité of Gastronomy and Wine

If Fine Arts Museums aren’t your cup of tea and you want to get a more unique experience while in Dijon, then head down to the Cité Internationale de la Gastronomie et du Vin for one of the city’s more modern attractions.

This complex of boutique shops, luxury hotels and marketplace hosts a number of events aimed at educating visitors on the local gastronomic and wine-making traditions.

You can book a cooking class on location, or book tickets to attend a talk or wine tasting event to learn more about the food and wine history of Burgundy and the wines from the nearby Côte de Nuits region.

Or, simply take in the exciting sights and smells of the space that was once a hospice, and now offers some of the most delicious artisanal produce of the region.

It’s best to book classes and talks in advance to ensure a space, but if you have a few days in the area and fancy staying at the onsite four-star hotel, you may get lucky and attend a talk on the spur of the moment.

Day 2 – Beaune

Nestled in the heart of the Burgundy wine region, Beaune is a charming town renowned for its rich history, exceptional wines, and vibrant culinary scene.

With its picturesque streets, mediaeval architecture, colourful rooftops, cultural attractions, and warm hospitality, Beaune offers a quintessential Burgundian experience that captivates everyone seeking a blend of history, gastronomy, and wine culture.

Hôtel-Dieu Museum

The Hôtel-Dieu Museum (also referred to as the Hospices de Beaune) is the highlight of any trip to Beaune, and possibly Burgundy as a whole as the incredible architecture, history and art combine into one extraordinary location.

Founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor to the Duke of Burgundy, and his wife Guigone de Salins, the Hôtel-Dieu was originally established as a hospital for the poor and sick. Its iconic architecture, characterised by colourful tiled roofs and intricate Gothic details, shows off the philanthropic endeavours of its founders and makes for fantastic photo opportunities.

Today, the Hôtel-Dieu Museum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and showcases a wealth of historical artefacts, artwork, and medical instruments, located within expertly restored wards and kitchens providing a glimpse into the daily life of those living and working in the Hospice during the Middle Ages to gain a better understanding of the evolution of healthcare over the centuries.

One of the museum’s highlights is the magnificent ‘Last Judgement’ artwork over several panels by Flemish artist Rogier van der Weyden, located in the hospice’s chapel and considered one of the masterpieces of early Northern Renaissance art.

You can also explore the museum’s tranquil courtyards and gardens for more incredible photos of the immaculate coloured tiles and cobbled ground.

Mustard-Making

Dijon mustard is world-renowned, yet the oldest traditional mustard manufacturer in the area is located in Beaune and offers both tours and experiences to make mustard in the traditional manner, by grinding mustard seeds in a mortar.

La Moutarderie Fallot has a shop in Dijon you can visit if you simply want to take some souvenirs home with you.

However, the factory tour is well worth visiting to learn about the history of mustard-making in the area. This includes what herbs and aromatic spices they use to flavour their mustard as well as the incredible Burgundy cuisine that has been influenced by the exceptional local mustard production.

Book your tour before your arrival to ensure you have a guide speaking your language, as the factory receives many visitors and offers tours in various languages throughout the day.

Patriarche Wine Tour

Burgundy is synonymous with medium-bodied red wines, so you have to visit at least one vineyard or wine cellar while in the area for a few days.

If you’re not able to get out to a vineyard over just 2 days in Burgundy, fear not, as Beaune has one of the most remarkable wine cellars in France located just below the street, which offers tours and tastings as well as a small shop for souvenirs.

Patriarche Père et Fils has 5 kilometres of vaulted caves below Beaune, filled with around 2 million bottles of wine!

You can wander around the caves yourself, admiring the sheer quantity of high-quality wine, and be joined by a wine expert at the end of your trip who will discuss the 6 wines you’ll taste and answer any questions you may have.

The Patriarche tour is an excellent stop for any trip to Burgundy, especially if the weather is unfavourable, but if you want to get outside and enjoy some sunshine, you can take an organised tour to a nearby vineyard to see how the producers collect the grapes and turn them into liquid gold.

Day 3 – Chalon-sur-Saône, Savigny-lès-Beaune or Wine Tasting

There are plenty of delightful Burgundy day trips to take, from visiting the lesser-known villages and towns, to excursions to see the amazing chateaux, wine tasting or hiking; so choose your activity for your final day wisely!

Chalon-sur-Saône

Chalon-sur-Saône is a small pretty town to the south of Beaune and worth a day trip if you’re staying in Burgundy for 3 days or more.

As a significant Roman settlement, you can explore the historic centre with quaint mediaeval streets filled with colourful half-timbered houses before stopping in various caves for wine tasting opportunities, and exceptional traditional Burgundy cuisine.

Located on the Saône River, you can also enjoy pleasant strolls or boat rides along the river to see the town from another perspective, enjoy picnics of local wines and cheeses and end your trip to Burgundy in a state of relaxation.

Just outside of Chalon-sur-Saône, easy to reach in 10 minutes by bus or by car on your Burgundy road trip, is the unique Nicéphore Niépce Museum of Photography.

This museum is named after the inventor of photography and is located in the inventor’s studio, the oldest photography lab in the world, where he took and developed the first-ever photograph.

For fans of photography and history, this museum offers an experience to delve into the traditional techniques of the practice and understand its significance in the world of art.

Savigny-lès-Beaune

If you’re staying closer to Beaune or have a keen interest in vehicles, then you shouldn;t miss out on a trip to the epic Château de Savigny-lès-Beaune which has been transformed into an amazing museum of motor vehicles.

With reportedly the world’s biggest collection of fighter jets, as well as helicopters and fire engines in the grounds, and numerous rooms filled with all kinds of motorbikes, there is plenty to take in on a day trip to the Château, just 10 minutes driving north of Beaune – not to mention the entire room dedicated to Fiat Abarth race cars.

You can then spend your afternoon ambling around the very small town, and stopping for wine tasting in one of its many cellars.

Wine Tasting

For a full day of wine tasting, you’re not stuck for choice in Burgundy, with renowned locations like, the Route de Grand Crus, Gevrey-Chambertin and Meursault right on your doorstep around Beaune for those with expensive tastes or just looking to experience the finer things in life.

Those who prefer white to red wine are also in luck, as the town of Chablis is located in the northwest of Burgundy, towards the town of Auxerre, and offers some excellent choices for sipping chardonnay and vineyard day trips.

Domaine William Fèvre is one of the most prominent producers in Chablis, known for its wines that reflect the unique characteristics of local limestone soils, which visitors can enjoy tastings of, including their range of Premier Cru and Grand Cru Chablis wines.

Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard is another well-known producer of Chablis, although with a focus on organic and biodynamic practices to produce more expressive and vibrant Chablis wines. Here you can taste a variety of Chablis, experiencing the vast range of flavours on offer in the area.

Otherwise in Burgundy, Domaine des Comtes Lafon is a beautiful vineyard situated in stunning surroundings in Meursault, perfect for an afternoon of wine tasting in the sun, while further north, towards Dijon is Domaine Armand Rousseau in Gevrey-Chambertin famous for its outstanding and elegant red Burgundy wines, including its Grand Cru Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze.

Have More Time?

If you have more than 3 days in Burgundy, you should definitely deviate one day to vineyard tours and wine-tasting, while spending a couple of other days visiting the other, larger towns in the area.

While the small valley between Dijon and Beaune is ideal for shorter breaks, over at least 4 days, you can travel further in the region, visiting Auxerre and Chablis to the northwest, or Maçon to the south.

Hiking in the Gorges de la Canche in Burgundy offers an ideal day out for nature enthusiasts seeking stunning scenery and outdoor adventure.

With its dramatic limestone cliffs, meandering streams, and lush greenery, the gorge provides a picturesque backdrop for hiking, catering to all skill levels with a variety of trails which are clearly marked.

With plenty of wildlife and plants around, hikers can delight in trekking around this area, coming across ancient ruins and mediaeval landmarks along the way.

Hiking in the Gorges de la Canche promises a memorable and enriching experience, blending natural beauty, cultural heritage, and outdoor recreation in the heart of Burgundy.

Mâcon is located in the far south of Burgundy and offers ample opportunities for wine tasting and exploration of local vineyards. The city itself has a charming historic centre with picturesque streets, lively markets, and architectural gems such as the towering and ornate Saint-Pierre Cathedral.

Mâcon is also a lovely place for riverside walks as it’s situated along the banks of the Saône River, providing scenic riverfront promenades and opportunities for boat rides.

Food enthusiasts will also appreciate the city’s gastronomic delights, including regional specialities like Poulet de Bresse (Bresse chicken) and the famous Mâconnais cheeses.

Auxerre is a charming town in Burgundy, France, offering a rich tapestry of historical and cultural attractions worth exploring.

One standout site is the Clock Tower, originally a Gallo-Roman tower turned prison in the 15th century, now restored and housing a fascinating clock mechanism dating back to 1483. Its unique solar and lunar hands not only tell time but also indicate moon phases, making it a captivating piece of heritage.

The town is also graced by the tranquil Canal du Nivernais, known as the “stop Vineyard,” offering scenic paths for boat rides, biking, or leisurely walks through picturesque wine villages along its banks.

Renaissance châteaux and medieval castles stand tall amongst the vineyards: Ancy-le-Franc, Bazoches, Sully or Châteauneuf-en-Auxois . If you fancy something really different, take a trip to the Puisaye and visit Guédelon where a medieval castle is being constructed using nothing but period techniques.

From the fortifications at Bibracte to the temple of Janus in Autun, a number of historical treasures bear witness to the region’s influence over the centuries. In Cluny, Vézelay, La Charité-sur Loire and Fontenay, you can contemplate the spiritual heritage of the Cluniac and Cistercian orders. In the region’s historic capital, Dijon , take time to admire the glazed tile roofs and Ducal Palace.

Whether on holiday or just passing through, be sure to savor a gourmet meal in a Michelin starred restaurant. Try out some of the local specialties such as Charolais beef , snails, Bresse chicken or the famous Dijon mustard .

Land of adventure

Burgundy offers the very best in river tourism, having the largest network of inland waterways in France. Sail along the renowned Canal de Bourgogne or take a trip on the Canal du Nivernais where you can admire the ingenious series of locks known as the “échelle de Sardy.”

There are many different bike paths offered on the “voies vertes.” Along five different routes, from the banks of the Yonne to those of the Saône, guesthouses and hotels with the Tour de Bourgogne à Vélo © quality label pull out all the stops for touring cyclists. Freewheel to the spa town of Bourbon-Lancy in the Saône-et-Loire , the Renaissance châteaux of Tanlay in the Yonne and Cormatin in the Mâconnais, or take time to explore the Romantic poet Lamartine’s house in Milly .

Thrill seekers can try driving on the legendary race track at Magny-Cours or night time bungee jumping at the grotte de Champ-Retard in the Yonne. After, if you are in need of somewhere peaceful yet unusual to stay, check out a gypsy caravan, yurt or house boat. You can even spend the night in a tree-top hammock amidst the rivers and lakes of the Morvan!

Year round festivities

Burgundy hosts a wide range of activities all year round, from the Fleurs de vigne in Auxerre to the Journées gourmandes de Saulieu in the Côte-d’Or, not forgetting the Chalon dans la Rue street festival at Chalon-sur-Saône , and historical spectacles and other wine events, many of which also involve outdoor performances and exhibitions.

Music lovers can enjoy the vibrant jazz scene in Nevers. If Blues is more your thing, don’t miss Le Creusot festival. Dijon attracts world-wide audiences for its Sacred Music festival. The International Festival of Baroque Opera takes place in the impressive courtyard of the Hospices de Beaune.

2 Days in Burgundy: Itinerary for 48 Hours in Beaune & Cote d’Or (+ Map)

Three words: French. Wine. Country! Burgundy is one of France ’s greatest wine regions, dotted with grand chateaux and biscuit-coloured villages where it seems that time stands still. We spent two days in Burgundy in June this year, which was the perfect introduction to this exceptional corner of France. You could spend so much longer exploring the region, but 48 hours in Burgundy is a great place to start for first time visitors. 

It is the birthplace of France’s famed haute cuisine, as well as iconic French dishes like coq au vin and boeuf bourguignon, making it the perfect destination for slowing down and embracing the French joie de vivre.  Below, I’ve shared our itinerary for 2 days in Burgundy, including our favourite wineries & restaurants.

We visited Burgundy halfway through our one month trip in Europe & the UK. We’d come from 5 days in Paris , and after Burgundy we went to Alsace – another spectacular surprise. It was my fifth time in France (& Paris !), but Burgundy was new to me. I was so excited to discover a new corner of France!

In the 15th century, Burgundy was one of the richest & most powerful states in Europe, a legacy which has provided the foundations for its rich gastronomic culture. Today, Burgundy is part of Bourgogne-Franche Comte, and is one of the most influential wine regions in France. 

Burgundy is home to some of the grandest wine chateau estates in France, which produce a number of Grand Crus and Premier Cru wines, along with dozens of revered regional and village appellations. A number of Burgundy regions are household names, like Chablis and the Macon villages (both known for its white burgundy, chardonnay) and revered in the wine world, like Cote de Beaune, Cote de Nuits and Nuits-Saint-Georges appellations. The vineyards of Burgundy have achieved UNESCO World Heritage status, for their humanity and exceptional universal value. 

Burgundy predominantly produces chardonnay and pinot noir; only wines made from either of these grapes, produced in burgundy can use the name “burgundy.” 

Burgundy is also the birthplace of haute cuisine, France’s greatest cultural export. It is only natural that a place with such superb wine, perfected a cuisine to go with it. 

The film Chocolat is set in Burgundy, in a town called Flavigny sur Ozerain. It was a little too far out of our way to justify stopping in, but it was chosen because it was emblematic of a typical Burgundian village!

We stayed in Beaune, the primary town in Burgundy’s Cote d’Or. Beaune is a beautiful and historic walled down, and is the perfect base for exploring the best wineries in Burgundy. 

The Cote d’Or, a small region which is home to some of Burgundy’s most prized appellations, like Pommard, Meursault, Nuits-St-Georges and Volnay. 

We stayed at Hotel Belle Epoque in Beaune, which is a former wine merchant house, converted into a charming small hotel with traditional Burgundian style. The rooms are large, and felt like we were staying in a large country house. Would recommend!

We took the high speed train, the TGV , from Paris to Beaune, with a change at Dijon. Dijon is the capital of Burgundy, and I’ve always wanted to visit. We had all of our luggage with us, so I was tempted to find a luggage locker and spend an hour or so walking around the city, but it would have cut more into our time in Burgundy which was already brief. 

We had purchased our ticket from Paris to Dijon in advance on the TGV, which is advisable since they can sell out. The TGV is amazing. We had the cheapest seats and they were still more like Business Class than economy. Super clean, comfortable and so efficient! I loved travelling around France by train.

We changed trains at Dijon, and bought our tickets on the regional train at Dijon station. There’s no need to book local train tickets in advance.  The TGV takes 90 minutes from Paris to Dijon, and the local train from Dijon to Beaune takes 30 minutes.

Our time in Burgundy was spent in the Cote d’Or, which is the most prestigious of Burgundy’s winemaking regions, and contains the famous subregion, Cote de Nuits. We  spent the first day exploring Beaune, which is the regional centre in this part of Burgundy, and is a beautiful, historic Burgundian town.

Exploring Beaune

We walked from Beaune Station to our hotel, Hotel Belle Epoque , which is located outside the walls of Beaune. Beaune is tiny, so the hotel is actually very well located. There weren’t any taxis at the station when we arrived, so we walked to our hotel. We were hiring a car in Burgundy, but we’d only hired it for the following day, because we planned to spend our first day exploring Beaune.

Beaune is a historic walled town in the centre of the Cote d’Or’s winemaking region, and is the wine capital of Burgundy (the official capital is Dijon). There are still pre-Roman and Roman features that can be found in Beaune, but most of the city is from Medieval, Renaissance and later periods. The 15th century Hospices de Beaune is Beaune’s crown jewel, and home to the most important wine auction in France every year. Beaune is surrounded by some of the most famous villages and vineyards in Burgundy, and many of the wineries have tasting rooms in Beaune.

We spent the afternoon exploring Beaune, wine tasting and enjoying the beautiful weather. 

Beaune Wine Tasting at Marche aux Vins

Our first wine tasting was at Marche aux Vins , a boutique wine market with self guided wine tastings, near the Hospices de Beaune and Place Carnot. This is a perfect spot for an introduction to Burgundy wine, especially as it’s located centrally, carries a range of wines and the self guided tour is not intimidating at all. The first part of the tasting explores white burgundy, in the caves underneath the March aux Vins. We had the caves to ourselves, and self-pouring was a fun novelty. 

The second part of the tour is upstairs, where the red burgundy tastings are a little more tightly controlled. They’re dispensed from a machine, and you scan the QR code on your ticket to get your allotted tastings.

Afterwards we went to another tasting room & boutique, a few doors down, where the manager was so warm and friendly, and so patient with my slow French! Naturally, more wine was purchased.

Place Carnot in Beaune

Place Carnot is impossibly pretty and impossibly French. Lined with restaurants and bars with outdoor seating, this was my favourite spot to spend the warm summer evenings in Beaune. We had a glass of wine and shared a cheeseboard at Aux Hospices Bar a Vins, which has since closed. I am a massive cheesehead, and had been picking up local cheeses for a picnic lunch everywhere on our trip so far – in Dublin, Edinburgh, London and Paris. I was finally defeated by the cheeseboard we shared in Burgundy, which was enormous and quite rich. It cured me of my cheese addiction for the rest of the trip!

We’d had an early start, so we had a nap back at the hotel before wandering back into town for dinner. There are more historic sights to see in Beaune, like the Hospices de Beaune, but for me, part of being on a holiday is not having every minute scheduled. An afternoon nap & wandering around to find dinner is an A+ holiday evening in my books!

In the evening, we spent a while exploring the streets of Beaune before settling on drinks at Les Chevaliers followed by dinner in Place Carnot at Maison Jules , which I can highly recommend.

Our full day in Burgundy was spent exploring the winemaking villages of the Cote d’Or, including visits to Chateau de Meursault, Caveaux Moillard, Chateau du Chassagne-Montrachet and Chateau Pommard. My favourites were our first and last stops, which combined a magnificent chateau setting with warm and attentive hosts. We stumbled upon one of the greatest meals of our life in Meursault, where we stopped for lunch, and had a beautiful dinner at a popular local restaurant in Beaune in the evening.

Booking wine tastings in advance is advisable, but we had decided to risk it on this trip. I was reluctant to have a tight itinerary on this part of the trip, and wanted to be able to slow down, explore and enjoy Burgundy at a leisurely pace. I also wanted to have time for surprises and local recommendations. Surprisingly, this strategy worked perfectly and there was only one winery which we had really needed a reservation for.

Chateau de Meursault

Chateau de Meursault is one of the best wineries that we visited in Burgundy, and had one of the best tasting experiences. Chateau de Meursault has more than 100 plots, including 5 Grand Crus, 18 Premier Crus and a dozen village and regional appellations. It is one of the grandest wine estates in Burgundy, and can trace the history of it’s site for the last thousand years, when the Duke of Burgundy conceded the fiefdom, now the estate, to one of his squires in the 11th century. 

We walked in without a reservation, and were immediately looked after. It was not too busy, as we arrived just after opening. The wines were beautiful, and we bought a bottle of white burgundy to gift to our friends we were staying with in Zurich, later in the trip. I wish we could have shipped a case of it home, but the international shipping and custom duties in Australia are prohibitively expensive.

Le Caveaux Moillard de Nuits-Saint-Georges

The Caveaux Moillard tasting room is located separately to the winery, and is a modern, purpose-built space for wine tastings & sales. The host who guided our tasting was so friendly and knowledgeable, and was wonderful at explaining the region works, as well as details about the Moillard wines. This was a great stop, and I’m pretty sure we bought a bottle here too.

The lunch we had in Meursault is one of the most memorable meals I’ve had in my life. When we did a bit of research online, another restaurant was recommended in the centre of town. It was busy, and there would be a long wait. It was full of what mostly seemed to be tourists, and to be honest, I wasn’t overwhelmed by the setting or what I was seeing on the tables. Instead, we kept looking and found this quiet courtyard restaurant at Hotel Le Globe . This was not your typical hotel restaurant!

It really should be no surprise that one of the greatest and oldest wine regions in the world, has a rich and sophisticated gastronomy. We found that even at small, relaxed restaurants, the food was of an exceptional standard. Even if you’re not a drinker, I would argue that Burgundy is worth a visit for the food (and the villages) alone!

Beyond the food, and warm service, the sunny courtyard setting was heaven. I think nearly all of my favourite meals have been in a sunny courtyard on a leisurely afternoon!

Chateau de Chassagne-Montrachet

We drove on some lovely tiny back roads between the vineyards from Meursault to our next stop at Chateau de Chassagne-Montrachet . This is the only cellar door we visited where we really did need a reservation. We waited for around 10-15 minutes while the manager was with an American couple who were buying a lot of wine, which was fine. We had a brief tasting of the entry-level wines, which was nice but honestly felt a bit awkward and rushed. It was fine, but I would recommend making a reservation at this one if you do want to visit. For us, since we couldn’t ship any wine home anyway, we preferred to have the flexibility and opportunity for spontaneity than to have a tight itinerary, so it was okay.

We stopped briefly in Volnay, but couldn’t find what we were looking for – I think we were looking for a cellar door, and it was closed or we couldn’t find it. The town seemed to be asleep in the late afternoon, which is typical of small towns in regional France, and other parts of Europe. We had a brief look around, before hopping back in the car for our final winery of the day, Chateau Pommard.

Chateau de Pommard

Chateau de Pommard was one of my favourite wineries that we visited in Burgundy, and easily the grandest. Established in 1726, Chateau de Pommard is one of the oldest wine estates in the Cote d’Or, and the 300 year old chateau and clos are both UNESCO protected.

If a winery is a Chateau, it means the land and the winery was formerly the property of the King. Not surprisingly, these are some of the most prestigious wineries in France, and have some of the best conditions for producing premium wines. We only had to wait for 15 minutes to begin the tasting, which is a private guided tour and tasting. There was a brief introduction to the chateau’s history, and the seven different types of soil found within Clos Marey-Monge. It was discovered relatively recently that within the single clos, there were 7 different types of soil, in different areas. They still offer wines in their original style, using grapes taken from across the clos, but now also create wines that are produced only from a single plot within the clos, from a single soil. You can taste the difference!

Chateau de Pommard balances heritage and tradition with innovation and sustainability, having begun the transformation into a sustainable vineyard in 2016, and has been certified biodynamic since 2021.

La Moutarderie Fallot

We tried to make it back into town in time to do the tour at Patriarche Pere et Fils , a winery with more than 5km of tunnels underneath Beaune, but we arrived 30 minutes before closing and they wouldn’t let us in. I read mixed reviews about this online so I wasn’t too disappointed, but it’s probably something I’d try and do next time I was there, out of curiosity. 

Instead, we visited La Moutarderie Fallot , an artisanal mustard factory, museum and tasting room.  I love mustard, and so I was very keen to pick up some from the source. Fallot was established in 1840 and is the last independent, family-owned mustard mill in Burgundy. Entry to the gift shop/tasting room, or “boutique-atelier” as it is called, is free. It was near our hotel so it was a fun way to spend half an hour before dinner. 

I nearly blew my head off tasting some extremely hot mustards, and bought a couple of take home. Unfortunately the larger jar was confiscated in Zurich airport because they considered it a liquid (despite having grams listed on the bottle, not mL!).

Dinner & drinks in Beaune

We returned to Place Carnot, which was buzzing in the early evening and last hours of sunshine for the day. We had a glass of wine at Bar 66 , a very popular wine bar with patio seating. I really liked this spot & would recommend it!

We walked a couple of blocks to Au Coq Bleu for dinner, a very charming and cosy restaurant that serves traditional Burgundian cuisine and was full of local diners. We had the loveliest meal, including the traditional Burgundian entree oeufs en meurette (eggs in red wine)  before ambling back to our hotel.

Next Stop: Alsace!

The next morning, we returned to the Beaune train station, to catch a train to Colmar (again, via Dijon), for the next leg of our trip in Alsace . It was not easy to leave Burgundy, but we were both completely spellbound by the Alsatian villages we’d discover over the next few days.

Best Burgundy Wine Route: Route des Grands Crus

The Burgundy Wine Region in Eastern France  is a fascinating area to visit, especially if you like wine! The Burgundy Wine Region is divided into five wine regions:  Yonne  (Chablis and Auxerrois),  Côte de Nuits ,  Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise,  and  Mâconnais.

The Burgundy wine country is best explored by following one of the  Burgundy Wine Routes . This Burgundy itinerary by car will follow the  Route des Grands Crus , combining culture, sightseeing, and wine.

The Route des Grands Crus  is a narrow strip of land, 60 km long and 2 km wide, that stretches out on a north-south axis from Dijon to Beaune in the department of Côte d’Or. This Burgundy wine route is well marked with brown background signs showing a white grape cluster. The trail crosses small wine-growing villages, visits two cities, and allows you to discover beautiful landmarks in France while tasting some of the best Burgundy wines.

With the Route des Grands Crus , Bourgogne invented  wine tourism in France ! This Burgundy wine trail was inaugurated in 1937, and it was the first wine route created in France.

The Route des Grands Crus, Burgundy, is divided into two parts. The first part, Côte de Nuits  (from Dijon to Corgoloin), contains a string of the greatest red wines in the world, including 24 of Burgundy’s 33 Grands Crus such as Romanée-Conti, Clos de Vougeot, or Chambertin. The second part,  Côte de Beaune  (between Corgoloin and Beaune on to Santenay), produces some of the finest dry white wines in the world, with Corton Charlemagne, the wines of Meursault, or Montrachet.

From Beaune to Dijon, our proposed Burgundy road trip takes four days, and it covers some of the Route des Grands Crus’ main sights in Côte de Nuits, with several wine-tasting suggestions. The road distances are short, but there’s no rush: the Burgundy Wine Region is a beautiful and relaxing area to explore, and because wine tastings + driving are not easy to combine!

The Burgundy Wine Region

La Bourgogne , Burgundy in English, is a historical region that is today part of the French region  Bourgogne-Franche-Comté . This region has soil and climatic conditions particularly favorable to viticulture, and it produces some of the best wines in the world.

The Burgundy Wine Region is spread over three French departments:  Yonne , Côte d’Or , and  Saône-et-Loire , with commonalities of limestone and clay soils and lots of sun. The climate is continental, oceanic, and Mediterranean.

The region that comprises the Burgundian vineyard cannot be extended, and it represents only 3% of the   wine regions in France   and a mere 0.3% of the world’s wine production. That’s one of the reasons why buying a bottle of Burgundy wine is a luxury!

The main Burgundy grape varieties are chardonnay for the whites and pinot-noir for the reds.

Traditionally, Burgundy winegrowers are known for their humble and traditional spirit. However, the rarity of certain exceptional cuvées arouses a real passion on the international scene.

Burgundy appellation wines  are classified into three levels. At each level, the appellations must follow specific production specifications.

• AOC* Grands Crus:  33 AOC, 1% of the volume of Burgundy wine produced;
• AOC Villages (Villages Premiers Crus, and Villages): 44 AOC, 46% of the volume of Burgundy wine produced;
• AOC Régionales (different sub-classes): 7 AOC, 53% of the volume of Burgundy wine produced

*AOC: Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (controlled designation of origin in English).

TIP:  If you are planning to bring a few bottles home (who could resist?!), make sure you pack your wine properly  so it arrives safely home!

Day 1 | Beaune

Beaune  is a pretty medieval town, compact and very easy to explore on foot. Be sure to visit  Les Hospices de Beaune for your day in Beaune; it is one of the most famous landmarks in France and a jewel of Burgundian architecture. Funded by their renowned wine estate, the Hospices have provided treatment and support for the elderly, sick, and destitute since the Middle Ages.

Then, head to  La Maison des Climats  (Porte Marie de Bourgogne, access is available through the Tourism Office ) , the must-place for anyone wanting to understand the  climats vine-growing lands of Burgundy , which have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2015.

THE CLIMATS OF BURGUNDY: Climat is the specific term used in Burgundy for a wine-growing plot. Climats are the worldwide birthplace of  terroir-based viticulture . Over the centuries, local winegrowers have patiently identified each terroir and revealed them through the wine they produced. They collected and used the many rocks and stones present in the vineyard to build huts (known as  cabottes ) and walls to separate the vineyards into more than 1,000 climats. Nowhere else in the world has man shown such determination to precisely link a wine to its place of origin and production in Burgundy. Each climat was given a name, which is now cast in stone in the  Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC)  system, and they reflect both its place of origin, the winemaker’s skills and expertise (or ‘savoir-faire’ as we say in France). The climats of Burgundy were recognized as a treasure for Humanity and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.

By now, it’s wine time, and luckily Maison Champy  (5 Rue du Grenier de Sel, Beaune) is not far away. Maison Champy (est. 1720) was the first winery to have been established in Burgundy. Today, it is internationally recognized for the quality of its Grands Crus from the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune vineyards, and in particular for its Corton Charlemagne wine. The Maison organizes tours and tastings with the opportunity to buy your favorite wines on-site.

Day 2 | Beaune to Vougeot (Côte de Nuits)

After a good breakfast in the château’s garden, this Burgundy wine route leaves Beaune in the direction of Vougeot , where you will spend one night. For a gloriously unique stay, book a room at Le Clos de la Vouge , a superb hotel that occupies an ancient mill by the river in the heart of a Burgundy vineyard. Château de Gilly is a good, less central, alternative. This 14th-16th century château is one of the best château-hotels in Burgundy , with moats, French-style gardens, and a dining room with a magnificent vaulted ceiling.

THE CÔTE DE NUITS is a hillside vineyard in the Burgundy Wine Region where almost all of the vines are exposed to the southeast, which allows the perfect maturity of its most important grape, pinot noir. With more than 90% of red wine production, this part of Burgundy is particularly well known for its 24 appellations Grands Crus. The Grands Crus are the highest vineyards, so they are more exposed to the sun. They are also the oldest vineyards in the Côte de Nuits, with the best soils. No wonder then that the most expensive wine in the world is a Burgundy wine, particularly a Côte de Nuits!

Morning at Nuits-Saint-Georges

On the way to Vougeot, the landscapes of this wine route Burgundy are beautiful, with plenty of photo opportunities, and nobody will blame you if you decide to stop a couple of times to get a closer look at the vines. Then, drive to Nuits-Saint-Georges, a small town with a long history of winemaking.

Nuits-Saint-Georges  gives its name to the  Côte de Nuits vineyard, and its patron Saint Georges gives his name to its most famous wine. Most of the vines grown around this village are pinot noir, but some plots are planted with chardonnay. The  Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin , Bourgogne’s most famous wine fraternity, was founded in Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1934.

This small but lively town is good for a short visit and perhaps more wine tastings.  Maison Moillard  (2 Route de Dijon, Nuits-Saint-Georges) is an excellent place to go, with commented tastings in French and English, detailed explanations, and a good wine quality /price ratio.

Take an early lunch at the town’s main square, under the shadow of its intriguing belfry, before heading to Cîteaux.

Afternoon at the Abbey of Cîteaux

The next stop of this Route des Grands Crus road trip is  Cîteaux . Visit the Abbey of Cîteaux and learn the history of this fascinating and important place for Burgundy’s wines. Founded in 1098, the Abbey of Notre Dame de Cîteaux was the cradle of the Cistercian order in France and a model for numerous monasteries that were placed under its control.

The first vineyards in Burgundy date back to the Celts and later the Romans. However, it was the Abbot of Molesmes, founder of Cîteaux, who identified the best kind of soils and selected certain grape varieties, improving with it the quality of the Burgundy wines. Cîteaux’s wine estate was huge until the French Revolution and the nationalization of ecclesiastical property.

Day 3 | Vougeot to Dijon

Morning at Château Clos de Vougeot

After a good breakfast, drive to the  Château Clos de Vougeot , one of the musts of the Burgundy Wine Region.

In the Middle Ages, wine-growing developed under the impetus of the Benedictine and Cistercian abbeys. In 1336, the monks of the Abbey of Cîteaux established the principles of winemaking. They built the first walls separating vineyards, known as  clos , contributing like this to the promotion of the region’s wines. The first of those clos,  Clos de Vougeot , is today the most iconic château of the Burgundy Wine Region.

Wander around the château’s different rooms and halls; the visit reveals the monks’ winemaking genius in the Middle Ages. It was the monks of Cîteaux who, in the 12th century, built the magnificent cellar and winery in the clos. Today the cellar houses two monumental wine presses.

In Clos de Vougeot, the  Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin  meets 16 times a year to celebrate the Burgundy wine (and good food!). During these spectacular dinners, the Confrérie also knights new Chevaliers du Tastevin.

For lunch, head to Gevrey-Chambertin for more good food and wine. On the way, you can stop at the unique Maison Vougeot , a building signed by Jacques Garcia dedicated to the house’s wines. A hidden gem in this Burgundy itinerary, Maison Vougeot offers tours in French and English and wine tastings à la carte.

Afternoon at Gevrey-Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin  is another small wine-growing village on this Burgundy wine trail that enjoys a worldwide reputation: Gevrey-Chambertin is home to 9 Grands Crus, the most famous of which is Chambertin.

Wine beginners may be interested in visiting  La Halle Chambertin (1 Rue Gaston Roupnel,  Gevrey-Chambertin) in the heart of the village. In May 2020, the former covered market opened a new space for tasting some of the Grands Crus, Villages, and Régionales wines of Gevrey-Chambertin. For 20 euros, take a wine-tasting session of 4 Gevrey wines (Régionales and Côtes-de-Nuits), where you’ll also learn the basics of wine tasting.

More experienced wine lovers can go to  Domaine Quivy (7 Rue Gaston Roupnel, Gevery-Chambertin) for wine tasting and good shopping. This charming 18th-century private townhouse is listed as a Historical Monument and has its own cellars, vat house, and testing cellar.

After the visit, it’s time to head to Dijon, the last stop on this Burgundy road trip. In Dijon, the  Grand Hotel La Cloche Dijon  is a good option, conveniently located close to all the main attractions. Book for one night.

Day 4 | Dijon

Dijon is one of the most beautiful cities in France  and the capital of the historical region of Burgundy. It was home to the Dukes of Burgundy, and as such, it has a fascinating cultural and architectural heritage.

After the monks, the powerful  Dukes of Burgundy  dominated art and culture across Europe. With their help, the Burgundy region and its wines gained considerable economic and cultural standing. Burgundy wines were shipped all over Europe, and winegrowers began ranking their wines according to their provenance and quality in a precise hierarchy.

DID YOU KNOW? In 1935,  Duke Philippe le Hardi  uprooted all the garnay grapevines, which he described as ‘ very harmful to human beings.’ He ordered pinot noir to be the only authorized grape for producing Burgundy wine.

The list of fun things to see and do in Dijon includes:

• The Hotel de Ville
• Jardin des Ducs
• Musée des Beaux-Arts, in the Palace of the Dukes
• The Old Town
• Notre Dame Church
• Central Market

Follow the owl!  In Dijon, brass plaques engraved with owls (the city’s symbol and unofficial talisman) lead visitors to the main sights of Dijon. Don’t miss the Hôtel des Ducs de Bourgogne, an elegant palace built in the 14th-15h century with a beautiful art collection about the history and expertise of the vine and wine, from Antiquity to the present day.

Road Trip: 3 Days in Burgundy, France

You could nerd out and book a bunch of tastings at wineries, but frankly, ducking into cellars at every stop would get a little repetitive and rob you of the nonvinous pleasures of this pretty and remarkably untouristed wine country.

Getting There:

You’ll want to fly nonstop to Paris’ Charles de Galle Airport on Air France , like we did when following Chef Ludo Lefebvre on this wine-scouting road trip. If you can swing business or first, the airline serves dishes created by chef Daniel Boulud and a cheese course (naturally), and pours excellent champagne. Come on, you are going to Burgundy after all, your food and drink game should be strong out of the gate.

Rent a car at the airport to skip the arduous escape from the city center. Drive about two hours to the river town Auxerre for lunch at the unpretentious Le Rendez-Vous , where Ludo's first kitchen boss cooks up local dishes like pinot-hued oeufs en meurette and tomato-spiked jambon chablisienne . Toast the beginning of your sojourn with a bottle from the impeccably curated wine list. Afterward, head east on the D965 for 30 minutes to Chablis for a tasting and a tour of the vineyards at the stately Château de Béru with winemaker Athénaïs de Béru. Be sure to book ahead. Wind your way back to Auxerre and sleep off your jet lag at the riverside three-star Hôtel Le Maxime , just a short walk from the old town, full of the city’s iconic half-timbered medieval houses.

Today you’re heading south to the heart of Burgundy. Stop 45 minutes in at the medieval hilltop town of Vézelay for a visit to the aptly named Vézelay Abbey and sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. The abbey marks one of the French starts of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela . If you don’t mind taking the long road, get on the A6 heading south and east and you’ll wind through the forested Morvan Regional Nature Park before reaching the town of Gevrey-Chambertin (home of legendarily rich pinot noirs) at the tip of the Côte d’Or. The rustically elegant La Rôtisserie du Chambertin is perfect for a light lunch of jambon persillé . Keep going south for about 30 miles to reach your room at La Poste in Beaune, a gracious, delightfully friendly, old-fashioned hotel with crisp service, hyperclean and comfortable rooms, and a Graham Greene sort of vibe. Have dinner in town that evening at Caves Madeleine (where all the winemakers eat), a welcoming little restaurant with a chalkboard menu offering classics like meat terrines and buttery pommes purée alongside prettily plated fish carpaccios and roasted meats with delicately prepared vegetables.

Visit the Hospices de Beaune , the stunning 15th-century almshouse that’s a museum for much of the year but transforms into the home base of the grandest wine auction in the world on the third Sunday of every November. Drive the nearby stretch of the D974 slowly and peer up at the tiny Grand Cru and Premier Cru plots of the vineyards Richebourg, Échezeaux, and La Tâche that yield the priciest wines in Burgundy. You’re not here to drink such highfalutin pours, but it’s some of the most expensive real estate in the world and worth a look. Back in Beaune, have lunch at Maison du Colombier , a casual, supersmart gastronomique tapas bar serving Franco-Catalan small plates (baby sardines on toast, Iberico ham of the highest grade) and a serious and wide-ranging wine list with a mix of old-school and innovative bottles. Order the groaning board of a charcuterie plate before you get on the road back to Paris.
