Whether moody and grey, or clear and blue, the scenery around Valdez is stunning. This day cruise takes passengers deep into that beautiful landscape for six hours of glacier and wildlife viewing.

The largest tidewater glacier in southcentral Alaska.

The day tour starts in Port Valdez and slowly cruises into the Valdez Arm of Prince William Sound. The sound is surrounded by the Chugach Mountains and an intricate coastline of fjords, rock beaches, and craggy sea stacks. A trio of barrier islands protect from the more tumultuous water in the Gulf of Alaska. The sound's calm waters are home to a variety of marine wildlife. Passengers often see puffins and cormorants, sea lions and seals, Dall sheep and brown bear, and sometimes even orcas.

Rounding Heather Island, the catamaran soon enters Columbia Bay. Pouring from an elevation of 10,000 feet, the Columbia Glacier is the one of the largest tidewater glaciers in southcentral Alaska. It is also one of the most active glaciers in the world. This makes for exceptional glacier viewing, with guests routinely able to photograph huge chunks of ice breaking away and crashing dramatically into the otherwise still water. After a lunch of chowder and bagels, the tour returns into Valdez.

The Columbia Glacier Cruise is a great choice for guests staying at the Copper River Princess Lodge . Valdez is about 100 miles or two scenic hours away by car.

The tour boat has two levels with heated cabins on each, wrap-around exterior walkways, and viewing decks at the bow and stern. There are also power outlets for recharging cameras and phones. No smoking is allowed on the boat.

The onboard meal includes a hearty bowl of clam chowder, a bagel, cream cheese, and cookies. A vegetarian lunch option is available when requested in advance. Complimentary coffee, hot tea, lemonade, and water are available throughout the cruise.

What to Bring

It is important to dress in layers for this day tour. Bring a rain jacket, hat, and gloves. Wear rubber-soled shoes. Even on a sunny day the air coming off the glacier can be in the 40s. Be sure to bring a camera and binoculars. Seasickness is not generally a problem in the calm water of Prince William Sound, but if concerned, air on the side of caution and take preventatives before departing.

Special Instructions

Check in at the tour office on the west side of the Valdez Small Boat Harbor one hour prior to departure.

Explore Glaciers Near Valdez

Visitors looking to experience the grandeur of glaciers on their next trip to Alaska should set their sights on Valdez. Located in Southcentral Alaska, Valdez is situated between the towering Chugach Mountains and bountiful Prince William Sound.

There are a variety of ways to experience both tidewater and valley glaciers, as well as options for every budget. Read further to learn how to get to these glaciers and when and where to see a glacier near Valdez.

Alaska Glaciers you can Visit without Taking a Cruise

Worthington glacier.

Worthington Glacier is one of the most accessible glaciers in Alaska. Located in Thompson Pass along the Richardson Highway, this glacier is unmissable if you are driving to or from Valdez. The glacier may be seen from the road while driving, or you may opt to stop at the Worthington Glacier State Recreation Site to walk to the glacier for an up-close experience.

The Recreation Site is located at Milepost 29 on the Richardson Highway and is open until closed by winter snow and ice conditions.

Note: Worthington Glacier also has a wheelchair-accessible trail.

Valdez Glacier

Valdez Glacier is located on the outskirts of town and includes a tale of human history as well as natural beauty. Known as the All-American Route, gold seekers traveled over Valdez Glacier into the interior of Alaska during the Gold Rush of 1898. Recent years of retreat have resulted in Valdez Glacier moving out of sight from the parking area and now requires a kayak in the summertime to view the glacier face.

In winter, when the glacial lake is sufficiently frozen, you can hike, snowshoe, ski, or fat bike across the ice to see the glacier as well as the stunning icebergs and ice caves that have frozen into the lake. Valdez Glacier is an excellent option in either season.

To get to Valdez Glacier, take Airport Road out to Valdez Glacier Lake. Kayak tours of Valdez Glacier and Valdez Glacier Lake are available with our local Valdez kayak guides .

Shoup Glacier

Shoup Glacier is tucked away in Shoup Bay and is accessible by boat, kayak, and helicopter or on foot. Experienced hikers can take the 8.5-mile hike to Shoup Bay for fabulous views. Alternatively, visit Shoup Glacier on a combo boat and kayak tour. This is an amazing way to get up close to the face of a glacier.

Hogback Glacier

Hogback Ridge is a mountain ridge located in the Chugach Mountains just outside of Valdez along the Lowe River. Hogback Glacier (sometimes called Hogsback Glacier) is located on the ridge. Snowmelt and glacial melt from Hogback Ridge feed Horsetail Falls and the Lowe River.

Hogback Ridge may be viewed from the Richardson Highway when driving to or from Valdez. The ridge may also be viewed from Thompson Pass via the Thompson Pass Pack Trail. Viewing access to Hogback Glacier is available via the "Out of Town" Trail system.

Alaska Glaciers You Can View from a Cruise

Columbia glacier.

Columbia Glacier is one of the largest tidewater glaciers in North America and the largest in Prince William Sound. Impressive any way you look at it. To see the remote Columbia Glacier , you have to take a cruise or travel by helicopter. Joining a day cruise from Valdez is by far the most popular way to experience Columbia Glacier.

Cruises out of Valdez operate every summer for the entirety of the summer. As an added bonus, many of these glacier cruises also see wildlife such as sea birds, various marine mammals, and occasionally whales!

Meares Glacier

Meares Glacier is unique among local glaciers. While most glaciers throughout the world are retreating, Meares Glacier is actually advancing. It is one of the few advancing tidewater glaciers in North America. Witness the thundering force of nature as seracs calve off the face of the glacier, falling to the sea below to form icebergs. Meares Glacier is furthest from Valdez, so join a Prince William Sound glacier cruise with this as the final destination. Summer is the only season day cruises operate.

Anderson Glacier

Anderson Glacier is situated in the Chugach Mountains around Port Valdez. Look for it at the western end of Port Valdez, near the Valdez Narrows. It feeds Anderson Falls, an impressively long waterfall. Viewing Anderson Glacier is not possible by road or hiking trail but only via glacier cruise. Your cruise narrator will point out Anderson Glacier as you sail past.

Brilliant Glacier

Brilliant Glacier is located within Unakwik Inlet in Prince William Sound. The easiest way to view Brilliant Glacier is by taking a glacier cruise out of Valdez. Any day cruise heading out to Meares Glacier will pass by Brilliant Glacier along the way. Summer is the best time for viewing Brilliant Glacier and the only time of year glacier cruises run.

Visiting 8 Glaciers Near Valdez

With our spectacular natural location in Southcentral Alaska, we are blessed with access to eight magnificent glaciers. Visitors can drive to Worthington Glacier and walk the paved path to the incredible vantage point. Or take a glacier and wildlife cruise or kayaking expedition to get an up-close encounter with some of the largest and most picturesque tidewater glaciers in Prince William Sound, like Meares Glacier, Columbia Glacier, and Shoup Glacier. Helicopter tours offer yet another way of glacier viewing for visitors to have an unforgettable trip.

Welcome to valdez and prince william sound..

Stan Stephens Glacier & Wildlife Cruises (SSC) respectfully acknowledges that we live, work, and operate on the traditional land of the Alaska Native Alutiiq/Sugpiaq peoples. It is because of their stewardship that we are able to share the wonders of Prince William Sound today. We encourage our guests to take time to learn about the history of our region’s Alaska Native people and their living culture.

Valdez – our home since 1971

The Stephens family and coworkers have enjoyed working with and in the community of Valdez since 1971. We love our home and take great pride in being able to employ residents of Valdez. When you visit Valdez, consider making time to enjoy our teams’ favorite things to see, do, eat, and drink in town.

Here are a few suggestions:

We live in a rainforest! Captain Amanda likes to remind folks that the rain is only a problem if you are not prepared. Pack some rain gear or get out the umbrella and plan to enjoy our home. Amanda likes to hike our many trails, and her favorites are the Dock Point Trail, Meals Hill Trail, and Homestead Trail. Find maps to our local trails here .

After a fantastic day on the water, what better way to wrap up the day then with a cold brew from one of our local craft brewers. As a home brewer, Captain Alan enjoys sampling custom brews and flavors at Valdez Brewing or Growler Bay Brewing .

Solomon Gulch Fish Hatchery is recommended by Captain Chris as a place everyone should visit at least once while they are in Valdez. While visiting the hatchery you can walk the paths and learn about our local salmon fisheries and have a chance to see seals, sea lions, sea otters, and bears that enjoy feasting on the returning salmon.

Captain Caleb starts his day of at one of our local coffee shops before coming to get the boat ready. A Rogues Garden is a favorite stop for a fresh cup, bagel, or pastry. However, if he needs something closer to the harbor you may find him at The Coffee Co., Klondike Coffee, or Sacred Grounds.

Selah , our Marketing and Reservations Manager, encourages travelers to dine at one Valdez’s many locally owned eating establishments. While there are many delicious options, Selah enjoys the local fish and sushi served at Fu Kung , a quick bite at The Potato , The Nat Shack , or any of our seasonal food trucks, and she loves planning her evenings around the live music and theater at Magpies on the Fly . Menus for the restaurants, food trucks, and coffee shops can be found in our office and on board each boat.

Valdez has many shorter scenic drives that you enjoy before or after a cruise. Our founder Mary Helen loves to venture out the road to Keystone Canyon to see beautiful waterfalls, Thompson Pass to take in the vistas of the Chugach Mountains, Dayville road to look for bears, and to Valdez Glacier Lake to see icebergs.

Scupper and Hitch , our company dogs, know how many of our Valdez travelers like to bring their four-legged friends along for the journey, and want to make the following suggestions so their furry friends stay healthy. Valdez is full of dog friendly paths such as the bike trail and harbor walks, back country routes such as Mineral Creek Trail, Wagon Trail, and John Hunter Solomon Lake Trail, and one of their favorite places to visits and sniff other dogs is the Shana Anderson Dog Park. Every weekend is an adventure

A weekend boating/sailing gippsland lakes: things to do and tips.

  • Post published: 31 January 2020
  • Post category: Australia / Oceania/South Pacific / Victoria

The Gippsland Lakes is a perfect destination to spend time on the water near Melbourne. Known for being the largest inland waterways in the southern hemisphere, it may even be one of Australia’s best spots for recreational boating. Sailing Gippsland Lakes was my favourite way to explore the region, but there are many other things to do in Gippsland Lakes if you aren’t a sailor!

There are different ways to explore the waters at Gippsland Lakes that will suit all budgets and levels of boating experience.

gippsland lakes cruises

This article is focused on ways to explore Gippsland Lakes from the water. If you want to stick to land activities, you may find Gippsland Lakes relaxing but overrated. It’s a lovely place, but the cruise opportunities make it special. There are better coastal places near Melbourne to explore by foot or by car, such as the Mornington Peninsula or Wilsons Promontory.

In three days, we were able to sail on Lake Victoria and Lake King, with a few stops to enjoy the coast. The Gippsland Lakes is a good area to gain sailing experience as it’s easy to navigate and hard to get in bad situations: there are no hidden rocks and we could quite easily see the shallow areas.

Visiting Gippsland Lakes after the 2020 bushfire disaster

Unfortunately, the East Gippsland region became famous for other reasons than its beautiful landscapes. The entire world talked about how Australia was on fire. Although the bushfires were tragic and destructive, it wasn’t quite right to say that the entire country was hit by the disaster.

The bushfires did affect Gippsland Lakes: there was a lot of smoke, and holidaymakers were asked to leave the area because of the high fire dangers. However, Gippsland Lakes didn’t burn and it looked lovely when we visited late January 2020. There was sometimes a bit of haze, but nothing too bad that would justify not going. The road was open – but most of the roads further east were still closed.

The bushfires happened during the peak tourist season. Local businesses need tourists to come back to the region and support the economy. If you’re hesitating: check the roads are open , check there’s no warning … and book your trip! You’ll have a great time.

Different options to explore Gippsland Lakes

See gippsland lakes on a sailing boat.

Those who follow my blog regularly won’t be surprised that I chose a sailing adventure to explore the Gippsland Lakes. We are always on the lookout for sailing holidays and bareboat charters in Australia . For me, sailing is a fantastic way to connect with nature. Plus, one of the good things about sailing is that it’s also fun when the weather isn’t that good – as long as there’s a bit of wind! Considering the weather forecast isn’t often sunny in Gippsland Lakes, that’s something to consider.

We hired a sailing boat from Riviera Nautic in Metung and spent our first night in Bunga Arm and the second night in Harper’s Bight (see map at the end of the article).

Responsible travel tip : Sailing holidays are eco-friendly as you limit your use of resources. Using the sails and a small motor reduce fuel use and water onboard is limited.

gippsland lakes cruises

See Gippsland Lake on a motorboat

It’s also easy to hire a motorboat to explore Gippsland Lakes, even without a licence.

Stay in a villa or room with a view and explore the lakes on a small boat

If you don’t like the idea to spend the night on the boat, or prefer to do a day trip, you can easily hire small day boats. Staying in a villa on the lake could be an excellent option. Check out these ones that have a jetty:

  • The Moorings at Metung *
  • Captains Cove Resort *
  • McMillans of Metung Resort *
  • A Window on the Bay *

Airbnb lists many accommodations with lake views *.

If you are a big group, check out Fraser Island Retreat *.

Responsible travel tip : Although sailing holidays are more eco-friendly, staying on land and going to cafes and restaurants is a better way to support the local economy.

Go camping with a small boat

If a villa is out of your budget and you only have a small boat, you may want to have a look at camping. Bunga Arm campground has seven scenic campgrounds that are only accessible by boat. You’ll need to book in advance .

Boats in front of Bunga Arm Campground

Go kayaking

The Gippsland Lakes system is huge, so you’d only see a small part of it when kayaking for a day. Still, it’s a fun way to be on the water and explore some places that are only accessible via the water.

Join a tour

If you want to fish or try to spot dolphins without going through the hassle of hiring a boat, you can simply join a tour. Most of them leave from Lakes Entrance. Going on a tour is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the region and spot wildlife. The locals always have a better eye and know what to look for!

Things to do in Gippsland Lakes when boating or sailing

At the end of the article, you’ll find a map of the things I recommend and our itinerary.

If like us you’re lucky with the weather when you go sailing Gippsland Lakes, you may want to refresh with a dip. A lot of jellyfish were floating around the lake which wasn’t appealing for jumping out of the boat. But they weren’t at the few spots reputed for swimming: in Duck Arm (at the start of the Banksia Peninsula) and Barrier Landing. As it’s close to the entrance where the lake system connects with the ocean, the water at Barrier Landing is clearer than anywhere else in the lake system which makes it the most popular swimming spot in Gippsland Lakes. It’s also a short walk away from Ninety Mile Beach, on the ocean side.

Responsible travel tip : Use the poles on the beach or anchor in the sand rather than using trees to secure your boat.

Ninety Mile Beach

Ninety Mile Beach is one of the longest stretches of sand in the world. Wherever you stop on the lakeside and walk to the ocean, you end up on Ninety Mile Beach. And it’s so long that you don’t see the end of it.

Except for the length, I didn’t find it particularly special and preferred staying on the other side, enjoying being on the boat more than on a beach.

gippsland lakes cruises

Bioluminescent zooplankton

During our second night at Harper’s Bight, the bioluminescent zooplankton was spectacular and without a doubt my biggest surprise and highlight during this sailing trip. It looked like fairy dust!

I am unsure of how common it is to see this when sailing Gippsland Lakes. But we had all the ingredients for it: there was a lot of rain a few days before our visit, and we were visiting during the warm season.

I’ve seen beautiful photos of the bioluminescence in Gippsland Lakes taken after a series of bushfires in 2008 when ash and nitrogen-rich soil washed up in Gippsland Lakes and attracted the bioluminescent zooplankton. We visited when a part of Victoria , including a part of East Gippsland, was declared as a disaster zone because of the terrible bushfires, which might be the reason why we got to see incredible bioluminescent zooplankton in Gippsland Lakes.

I highly recommend moving the water once it’s all dark. Maybe nothing will happen. But maybe it will be magic!

Unfortunately, being on a rocking sailing boat didn’t allow us to take long-exposure photos and capture the stunning bioluminescence.

Bird watching

Bird watching in Gippsland Lakes was fantastic.

Have you heard of the black swan theory ? It’s based on the fact that Europeans believed for a long time that black swans did not exist. It was a symbol of something impossible like we’d say nowadays chickens with teeth or flying pigs. Black swans are actually widespread in Australia , but they’re still a rare sight for Europeans. In Gippsland Lakes, they are everywhere, mixing with a few pelicans and cormorants.

We also saw white-belly sea eagles and many terns.

Black swan on the water in Gippsland Lakes

Visiting pubs

There aren’t many places in Australia where you can sail in beautiful nature from one pub to another. We weren’t ready for a pub crawl during our weekend, but it sounds fun to go to the pub straight from the boat. It can also be very convenient if you haven’t organised food in advance.

Spotting wild koalas

If you haven’t had a chance yet to spot a koala in the wild, then don’t miss Raymond Island. More than 200 koalas live in residential streets around the island, between houses and in inhabitants’ gardens. The koala trail gives you an opportunity to learn more about the marsupial during the 1.2km walk.

To reach Raymon Island, you’ll have to take a short ferry ride from Paynesville. It’s free for pedestrians.

As we had many times the opportunity to see koalas in the wild (on the Great Ocean Road , on Stradbroke Island and on Magnetic Island ), we skipped Raymond Island to escape to more natural areas on Gippsland Lakes.

Internet research describes Gippsland Lakes as a popular fishing destination. With Australia’s largest fishing port located in Lakes Entrance, some even say it’s Australia’s fishing capital.

From our experience, don’t rely on fishing for your meals. You may have more luck than we did if you try fishing on the ocean side. Although white breams and flathead were mentioned by a few locals, we didn’t even see one fish in the lake system.

Gippsland Lake Fishing Sunset Sailing

Spotting dolphins and seals

We weren’t lucky enough to see dolphins or seals during our sailing trip in Gippsland Lakes. The endangered Burrunan dolphins live in the bay, and there are tours organised to spot them.

Watersports

While sailing Gippsland Lakes, we saw many locals having fun water-skiing.

How many days do you need for boating or sailing Gippsland Lakes?

We used a three-day long weekend for our sailing adventure in Gippsland Lakes. It was a good length, although we wouldn’t have minded staying one more day to visit a few more spots and take more time sailing.

If you live in Melbourne and can travel to Gippsland Lakes on Friday night, it could be worth going even just for a weekend. We could arrive the night before to stay on our sailing boat at no extra cost.

Things to bring for your Gippsland Lakes sailing/boating trip

Warm clothes and shorts.

Even during summer, the nights were cold on the lake. If you’re lucky during your sailing trip, you’ll have a bit of wind. It also means more risks of being cold! We had lovely weather during our summer weekend in Gippsland Lakes, but we all put on a jacket when the wind picked up one afternoon to more than 20 knots!

Even during the colder months, you want to pack shorts. In many places, we had to beach our sailing boat to access land. Most jetties are private or too busy. We were going off the boat from the front, with a ladder. The water wasn’t too high, but we’d still get wet to the knees.

gippsland lakes cruises

Rain jacket

I never go sailing or boating without a rain jacket. Even if it doesn’t rain, it can be used as a wind stopper and keep me warm.

When you’re on the water, it’s important to apply sunscreen regularly – even when it’s cloudy.

Responsible travel tip : Did you know your sunscreen can pollute the water and harm animals? The best way to protect your body from the sun is to cover it with long sleeves and pants. If you do have to use sunscreen, choose a mineral one (like zinc) to avoid harmful substances (see the full list here ) and apply it at least 20 minutes before entering the water.

Polarised sunglasses

Some parts of the Gippsland Lakes look a lot more beautiful when you’re wearing polarised sunglasses. These types of sunglasses are also excellent for spotting better shallow areas.

The map above is a summary of the places I recommend in the article, and of our itinerary during our three-day sailing adventure in Gippsland Lakes. While sailing, we used this map . It was also useful to have a phone app to help with navigation as our sailing boat didn’t have a GPS.

We hired our boat in Metung, and it took four hours to drive there from Melbourne . We flew to Melbourne on Friday night after work and drove to Gippsland Lakes early on Saturday morning. With the time difference in summer, we could fly back to Brisbane on Tuesday morning and still arrive on time for work.

Don’t take our word for it – here’s what our guests say:

Had a wonderful boating holiday thanks to Riviera Nautic. Fantastic service from Cam and the team. Highly recommended!

Haolei, Tanjil 41

On behalf of my entire group, I would like to extend our greatest appreciation to Riviera Nautic for helping us with our little getaway last weekend.

Both families in our booking had an outstanding time using the Crusader, jetting around to some different areas on the lake to enjoy some fun watersports. We did everything from kayaking, paddleboarding, jumping off piers and the boat, fishing, swimming and just chillaxing on the beaches and on the top deck of the boat.

Your friendly and professional team delivered an excellent service from start to finish. The wonderful communication leading up to the event made it easy to plan and address our questions and the support and guidance throughout the briefing and whilst away on the trip was fantastic.

We have recommended your company to a number of our friends and we would happily re-book with you again in future.

Again, thank you all for making our getaway so memorable and enjoyable.

Tania, Bulls Mariner 10

We recently booked a 7-day sailing holiday with Riviera Nautic and had the ABSOLUTE BEST time.

We were able to sail our own boat and enjoy the stunning natural beauty of the Gippsland Lakes. Our yacht was well-maintained, clean and super comfortable. I was worried how we’d go with 2 kids and 2 adults on a boat for a whole week, but it didn’t feel cramped at all, and it was amazing to dock next to a jetty or pull onto a beach and swim, walk, fish, play and explore to our heart’s content.

We got to hang out as a family and spend proper quality time together – sailing during the day and playing board games on the boat at night – away from our usual screens and devices!

The Riviera Nautic team gave us plenty of guidance and were always available to answer questions both before we arrived and once we were on the water.

Highly recommend a boating holiday and with Riviera Nautic, it was so easy and so, so much fun. Thanks RN team!
