Rock and roll hall of fame museum makes for an awesome ohio day trips activity.

If you are looking for an activity that is unique to Ohio, then consider heading to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum.

It is one of the most incredible things to do in Ohio because it is the only home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The museum is located in downtown Cleveland, right by Lake Erie.

Inside the massive 55,000 square foot building, you’ll find several levels of exhibits dedicated to the history of Rock and Roll.

The I.M. Pei-designed building also houses the offices of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and it’s where the artists who are inducted every year are decided on.

You’ll also find souvenir shops and a cafe, which means you can easily spend the entire day exploring this super-unique museum in Ohio.

Explore The Ohio Caverns

The Ohio Caverns are definitely one of the best hidden gems of the Midwest .

Visitors have been flocking to these cool underground tunnels almost since they were first discovered between 1897 and 1925.

Now, the caverns are known as ‘America’s Most Colorful Caverns’ and still attract thousands of visitors every year.

Depending on the time of the year, the caverns are open for tours at different times.

Visit Chateau Laroche

When you think of Ohio, castles probably don’t come to mind.

But they should!

Ohio is home to several castles , and one of those is Chateau Laroche.

Chateau Laroche is often called Loveland Castle by locals, simply because you can find it in the town of Loveland, Ohio.

The Chateau is a full-size replica of a European castle and features a mishmash of different architectural styles from different European countries.

You will see influences from English, French, and German architectural styles as well as four turrets, each of which has a different style.

The castle is now a museum, where you can tour the inside as well as the grounds, and learn about its eccentric builder.

Explore The German Village In Columbus

One of the best day trips in Ohio is a day spent in the German Village in Columbus.

The German Village is a charming neighborhood in Columbus.

You’ll find beautiful brick homes and buildings, many originally built in the mid-1800s by the area’s original German immigrants.

Just west of the German Village you can also find Columbus’ Brewery District.

The Brewery District was also originally built by the area’s German immigrants and was the hub of the city’s brewing culture.

The local Amish are very welcoming to visitors, but please be respectful of their lifestyle and religious beliefs.

Visit The Pro Football Hall Of Fame In Canton

Football fans will love this fun option for day trips in Ohio.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in Canton Ohio.

Inside, you’ll find tons of exhibits all relating to American football.

It’s no surprise that football fans travel from all over the world to spend the day exploring this really unique museum experience.

There are interactive exhibits and fascinating tours that teach you all about the history of football and some of its most iconic players.

You will even find exhibits dedicated to each Pro Football team, so you will be able to admire memorabilia from your favorite team.

Inside the Super Bowl Theater, you’ll also be able to view videos that highlight some of football’s superstars.

Step Into History At The National Underground Rail Road Freedom Center

You can find the National Underground Rail Road Freedom Center in Cincinnati.

It is specifically located along the banks of the Ohio River because the Ohio River used to be a natural divider between ‘free’ and ‘slave’ states.

The ‘free’ states were those above the Ohio River and the ‘slave’ states were those below the Ohio River.

So it was naturally one of the best crossing points for enslaved peoples looking to escape.

Now you can learn about the history of the Underground Rail Road in Ohio at the center.

The center highlights stories of those who helped enslaved peoples escape to Ohio as well as the stories of those who managed to find freedom in Ohio.

It is an incredibly moving museum.

While we believe that slavery ended in America with the end of the Civil War, that is sadly not the case.

Slavery continues to occur every day in the form of human trafficking, even in America.

Alongside the exhibits about the Underground Rail Road, you’ll also find exhibits that highlight and inform visitors about the modern-day slave trade.

Admire The Kelleys Island Glacial Grooves

The Kelleys Island Glacial Grooves are an Ohio natural wonder on Kelleys Island.

It is an island just off the coast of Lake Erie near Sandusky.

Kelleys Island is super tiny and you can only reach it via ferry.

So keep that in mind when you are planning this Ohio day trip adventure.

To get around the island you will need to walk.

There are no cars permitted, but at only four miles by two miles, that probably will not be a problem.

You can see a few things on the tiny island, but the most popular is the glacial grooves.

The grooves were created by a glacier slowly sliding on the landscape and carving the grooves over time.

It is one of the coolest places to go in Ohio.

Put-In-Bay For One Of The Most Romantic Ohio Day Trips

The small town of Put-in-Bay is a great spot for a romantic getaway or even just a romantic day trip.

Put-in-Bay is also home to Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial.

Hocking Hills State Park is a natural Ohio attraction that everyone should take the time to visit.

While you explore the park you’ll find gorgeous waterfalls , scenic hiking trails , and unique rock formations dotted throughout the lush forest landscape.

The area around the state park is also full of fun activities. There are shops, restaurants, and historic museums.

If you are looking to escape to the great outdoors for one of your next day trips in Ohio, then you can’t go wrong with a day spent at Hocking Hills State Park.

Explore Ashtabula Beaches And Parks

Ashtabula is an adorable small town, probably best known for its wonderful Lakeshore Park.

The Lakeshore Park is located on the shores of Lake Erie and is about 54 acres of trails, sandy shores, and park area.

What makes the park and the beaches of Ashtabula so popular are actually a few different things.

The beaches are very pretty, and Lakeshore Park is full of amenities.

There are grassy areas where you can picnic or relax and play some horseshoe, a playground for kids, volleyball courts, pavilions, and even a public boat dock.

You could easily spend an entire day in Ashtabula.

That’s what makes it one of the best small towns in Ohio for a day trip.

Westerville Is One Of The Cutest Small Towns In Ohio

If you are looking to explore one of the cutest small towns in Ohio , head to Westerville.

For those near Columbus, Westerville is just a short 20-minute drive away.

In the small town, you will find a great main street with unique shops and restaurants.

You can stroll through the Sharon Woods Metro Park or the Inniswood Metro Garden if you want to enjoy some beautiful small-town landscapes.

For those that are interested in history, Westerville is a cool place to visit.

A fun fact about the town is that it was called ‘The Dry Capital of the World’ because it continued the prohibition of alcohol long after the US rolled back prohibition laws.

While you are in town, history lovers should also make a stop at the historic Everal Barn and Homestead.

Waterfall road trip of Ohio

Ohio is full of scenic waterfalls, which makes for a fantastic road trip. We’ve included Ohio’s most popular waterfalls here, plus some of our favorites.

Starting from Columbus, check out Hayden Falls (in Dublin). It’s a gorgeous location, in a scenic gorge with a boardwalk and overlook area. From there, check out Indian Run Falls, also in Dublin, Ohio.

Heading to the north and east, just past Akron, make sure you stop at Brandywine Falls, which feature terraced waterfalls with boardwalk viewpoints. There are countless falls in this area to check out, including the Great Falls of Tinder Creek, (suburban falls in Viaduct Park), Chagrin Falls (easily accessible near the main street of Chagrin Falls town), and Columbia Beach falls, which cascade into the ocean. If you’re looking to do a little hiking, check out Buttermilk Falls, which are accessible by a hiking trail.

To the west of Columbus, you’ll find the gorgeous Charleston Falls, in the Charleston Falls Nature Preserve, with hiking trails, a nature boardwalk, and restrooms.

To the southeast of Columbus, check out the more remote Cedar Falls, with a shallow pool among cliffs and grottos. You’re not supposed to swim here, but that doesn’t stop most people.

Amish Country Byway

If you’re interested in taking in a little unique culture, the Amish Country Byway is a great choice.

Be sure to check out the Farmer’s Produce Auction during growing season, plus the Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center and Yoder’s Amish Home. Any time of year, there are fun tours, comfort food, and a relaxed vibe. A 76 mile drive, in northeast Ohio.

Hocking Hills Scenic Byway

Looking for the most scenic highway in Ohio? Hocking Hills Scenic Byway is generally considered the most scenic drive from Columbus.

You can access the start of the Hocking Hills Scenic Byway at the intersection of state Route 374 and U.S. 33 in Rockbridge. It’s a 30 mile drive, which lets you take much of what Ohio has to offer, including valleys, rolling hills, meadows, and charming small farms. You can do this drive year round.

Though Hocking Hills is known as the most scenic day trip from Columbus, there are plenty of other options.

Cleveland is a busy city on the shores of Lake Erie, and only just over two hours drive from Columbus.

This is the place to get your rock and roll on at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or record a jam session at the Garage. The family friendly Christmas Story House and West Side Market are perfect to round out your itinerary.

Only an hour and a half away from Columbus, Cincinnati is packed with fun things to do, whether you’re into sports, performing arts, culture, or just great food and drink.

Are you planning a getaway or day trip to Ohio?

If you're not, maybe you should. The Buckeye State doesn't always get the best rap as an exciting place to visit, but the state is actually home to plenty of unique and charming small towns worth checking out.

Here's some of the best towns and villages you can visit throughout Ohio (in no particular order):

Yellow Springs

Yellow Springs, located 30 minutes outside of Dayton, is renowned for being one of the coolest towns in the state. The town, just under 4,000 residents, is known for its unique culture, art scene and thriving downtown area.

Yellow Springs is home to many independent businesses, from art stores to restaurants to comic book shops. The town is also just miles from John Bryan State Park and Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve, which are among the best natural areas in the state.

Yellow Springs is also along the Little Miami Scenic Bike trail, a 78-mile paved bike path that connects cyclists to dozens of towns throughout southwest Ohio.

Another stop on the Little Miami Scenic Bike trail is Loveland, a historic town 20 minutes north of Cincinnati.

Loveland has a quaint (but bustling) downtown area settled right along the Little Miami River, which has businesses like restaurants, bike and kayak rentals and even a popular record store .

Another local attraction is the wacky "Chateau Laroche," also known as The Loveland Castle. Today a museum , the castle was built by hand beginning in 1929 by a World War I veteran who had seen castles in Europe and wanted his "Knights of the Golden Trail" to have a home.

Athens is a southeast Ohio pick on this list and holds a certain special place in the hearts of Ohio University alumni everywhere.

Besides being the home of OU, the city boasts multiple breweries (including the famous Jackie O's and a ciderhouse ), art shops and a slice of college life in a town nestled in the foothills of Appalachia.

Athens is also in a perfect position for some short drives to some of the best hiking trails in the state, including Hocking Hills State Park and Conkle's Hollow State Nature Preserve (both are around 30 minutes from Athens). There are also even closer options like Stroud's Run State Park and Radar Hill.

Granville is another college town that brings its own New England-style charm to the table. The town is the home of Denison University and features unique architecture throughout the campus and town.

Granville features shaded main streets with shopping and dining options as well as historic lodging options.

Only 10 minutes away from Granville are the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks in Newark, which were recently placed on a UNESCO World Heritage Committee list, which puts it alongside the Pyramids of Giza, the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal, The Dispatch previously reported . There is also a mound located in Granville itself.

Chagrin Falls

You may not believe this, but the centerpiece of Chagrin Falls, a town located 40 minutes from Cleveland, is the natural waterfall in the center of its historic village.

Today, Village of Chagrin Falls residents and visitors enjoy a walkable and architecturally intriguing historic village with its natural waterfall and dam located in the center of town.

The village has over 50 storefronts, offering many dining and shopping choices to guests. The waterfall is also a year-round attraction , freezing in the winter and cascading in the summer.

Founded in 1788, Marietta gets the unique status as not just the first United States settlement in Ohio , but in all of the Northwest Territory.

In addition to the downtown neighborhood, which features shopping and dining, centuries of history seems to be in the fabric of the city. Historic Harmar Village, just across the Muskingum River from downtown Marietta, gives visitors a taste of middle class Victorian-era life in Ohio.

There are also a number of museums in or around town detailing the centuries of history. A good museum to consider visiting is the Campus Martius Museum , which sits on the the original site of the stockades of Campus Martius , the civilian fortress that would later become Marietta.

Vermilion, located on the south shore of Lake Erie, was once known as the “Village of Lake Captains," and today, many of those captain's homes are still beautifully preserved and give the town a New England feel.

The maritime tradition of Vermilion is still on display (as seen by the functioning lighthouse on the harbor), and residents and visitors can take advantage of the public boat docks and boat and paddle craft rentals. There are also beaches, shops, dining and more to check out while in town.

15 Best Day Trips from Columbus (Ohio)

Columbus is the capital of the mid-western state of Ohio, and also its largest city.

Known for its numerous parks and world famous university, Columbus is also centrally located between Ohio’s two other big cities: Cleveland and Cincinnati.

It is in the perfect location to be used as a base to gain access to the entire state.

Within reach of Ohio are many opportunities for day tripping, with many historic mid-west cities and towns, such as Newark and Dayton, just a short drive away.

Nature lovers will find plenty of State Parks with hiking trails, cascading waterfalls and beautiful woodland scenery to explore.

Far north of Ohio lies the huge Lake Erie, along with the state’s only National Park: Cuyahoga National Park.

Around the state there are underground caverns, caves and even ancient Native American earthworks: lasting relics from a time long ago that have survived to this day and are an important part of the region’s long history.

1. Hocking Hills

Just southeast of Columbus is the Hocking Hills State Park, a must do day trip from the city that takes you to some of the most unusual rock formations in Ohio.

Hocking Hills is the site of caves, cliffs and crevasses, with short and long hikes connecting different parts of the park, as well as opportunities for kayaking, rock climbing and even zip lining.

The real highlight of the Hocking Hills is the cavernous Ash Cave, which forms a huge open recess in the rock that can be walked in and around.

Aside from the Ash Cave, there are many other rock formations to visit; don’t miss out on Cedar Falls, a spectacular waterfall which plunges over giant rocks.

2. Cuyahoga National Park

Cuyahoga National Park is Ohio’s only National Park.

Found north of Columbus and close to the city of Cleveland, it is a stunning area of natural beauty that follows the course of the Cuyahoga River, containing walking and cycling trails, waterfalls, and caves to discover.

The National Park also has an historical canal that can be traversed on foot.

This was the first canal in the state, stretching to Lake Erie in the north.

It allowed Ohio to be opened up to the rest of the country and the world by providing a means of entry and exit for people and goods.

The small, unassuming city of Dayton has played a huge role in the history of aviation.

This is where the Wright Brothers came from, and where they built their first aircraft; going down in history as the pioneers of modern flight.

Dayton, just a day trip away from Columbus, should be visited to see where flight really began.

Today it is also home to the National Museum of the United States Air Force, a very fitting location for one of the largest aviation museums in the world.

Newark is just 40 miles away, and is a great retreat from the big city.

Here you can find the world’s largest basket, which is actually a huge, company headquarters building shaped and designed to look like a basket.

There is also the interesting Works Museum: a museum dedicated to Newark’s industrial and technical history, where you can learn about glass blowing and canal building alongside the history of the region.

Around Newark there are also numerous ancient earthworks: huge mounds constructed by old Native Indian civilizations, that have survived to this day.

5. Miamisburg Mound

The Indian mounds aren’t only found around Newark, but exist in most of the state of Ohio.

One of the most interestingly shaped is the towering, conical Miamisburg Mound, raised on a high ridge and visible from miles away.

At 65-feet tall, it features a staircase through the center of the grassy mound which takes visitors to the top for panoramic views out over the surrounding area.

The Mound is one of thousands that have been discovered, the relics of lost civilizations, but Miamisburg is unique because of its height; few other surviving mounds can match it for size.

6. Olentangy Indian Caverns

If you are interested in Native American history, then another great day trip from Ohio is a journey to the Olentangy Indian Caverns.

This natural cave system was used by the local native Huron people as shelter.

The caverns stretch over three floors and would have provided a refuge and safe haven in times of war, being difficult to find from above ground, let alone enter.

The caverns can be explored on underground tours led by local guides.

7. Tecumseh

Tecumseh is not a place, but a historical show that has to be seen when visiting Ohio.

This is an outdoor drama set in the hills of Ohio, and it tells the story of the local Indians; in particular the chief Tecumseh, who tried in vain to defend his land and people from colonization in the 1700s.

Because it is held outdoors, the show is only performed in the summer months, but it is worth scheduling your Columbus trip to coincide with a showing, as it receives accolades worldwide.

8. Amish Country Ohio

Northeast of Ohio is Amish Country, made up of several towns and cities, the largest of which is Millersburg.

This is a completely different world, where the Amish communities live in varied ways according to their beliefs in the Bible, meaning there is little technology and lots of faith.

You will see horse drawn carriages on the roads and traditional houses in the towns, while many of the communities actually speak Pennsylvania Dutch as their first language, rather than English.

9. Seneca Caverns

Seneca Caverns is a huge underground cave system with miles of passageways and underground rivers that feed the region’s entire water system.

The cave is multi-layered and to date there are seven underground levels which can be explored.

Guides will take intrepid visitors through the system; exploring the caverns and narrow passages that lead further and further down.

It’s not known how deep the system really goes, but it’s certainly a long way.

10. Ludlow Falls

Ohio has an abundance of beautiful waterfalls due to its rocky landscape, but Ludlow Falls stands out amongst them as a spectacular cascade.

Located near Dayton, not far from Columbus, Ludlow Falls is in fact hidden away beneath a bridge, making it difficult to spot.

The walk there is easy as long as you know where you are going, and it’s a quiet, secluded spot to enjoy Ohio’s enticing natural scenery.

11. Clifton Mill

Clifton Mill is a beautifully scenic piece of Ohio heritage which dates back to 1802. The Mill is on the banks of the Clifton River, and is spectacular to see, with man-made waterfalls cascading down from its position above the river.

The Mill is water powered, and these days is more of a tourist attraction than a working mill.

There’s an on-site restaurant, and at Christmas time they put on an extravagant light display that’s famous across the state.

12. The Wilds, Cumberland

The Wilds is a unique, open-air Safari in Cumberland Ohio, where the animals roam free and visitors are taken around on big safari trucks to see rare and endangered wildlife in natural settings.

The Wilds is a non-profit organization; they put the animals first, and that’s why the facility is so popular.

They have species from across the world and educate people on conservation and responsibility rather than just providing entertainment at the expense of the captive animals.

13. Salt Fork State Park

Salt Fork State Park is the largest of Ohio’s state parks, covering huge areas of forest east of Columbus.

It’s a beautiful place to hike, bike and get into the heart of Ohio’s natural environment, but it’s also known locally for the legend of Big Foot.

Believe what you will, but local lore says that it’s the home of this mythical creature.

Reported sightings have been made all across Salt Fork since the first European settlers arrived in the 1700s.

Documentaries have been filmed here and hardcore explorers head out into the wild to try and find this legendary creature.

They even hold a Big Foot conference here to celebrate this monstrous legend.

14. Cincinnati

An hour and a half south of Columbus is the city of Cincinnati: the third largest city in Ohio.

It’s the home of the Cincinnati Reds, the oldest baseball team in America.

Once just a sprawling industrial city, Cincinnati has reinvented itself as a tourist destination, offering great food and a growing cultural scene, all spread along the banks of the Ohio River.

The cityscape itself is one of the best reasons to visit, as the center has a huge concentration of distinct, 19th century architectural buildings from Cincinnati’s industrial boom days.

15. Cleveland

Cleveland, Ohio’s second largest city, is found in a beautiful setting on the banks of the huge Lake Erie.

It is a culturally and historically significant city, dating back to the early days of European exploration of the Great Lakes.

Sometimes the avid travelers among us forget to look around and see the joy of exploring closer to home. As (fairly) new Ohioans, we’ve been amazed at just how many interesting places surround us! We’ve made it a project to go on – and document for you – the best day trips from Columbus, Ohio.

This quest has truly been a delight so far, and we have even more planned for the coming months and years. I’ll keep adding them as we go so that I make sure to give you the real deal on whether or not these places are worth your precious weekend days.

It’s also been surprising to discuss some of these Columbus day trips with local friends and colleagues who have lived here for decades without knowing what’s in their own backyards – hopefully you’ll find some unexpected gems. Some of these are awesome family day trips from Columbus Ohio, while some of these day trips in Ohio are better for couples or kid-free adults. Have a read and find something interesting!

Best Day Trips From Columbus OH Within 1 Hour

Hocking hills.

Distance from Columbus to Hocking Hills: 55 miles/55 minutes

Hocking Hills State Park is surely one of the most popular day trips in Ohio. In fact, I first heard about it from my random seatmate on our relocation flight!

This is a great place for hiking in Ohio. The most popular trails are Old Man’s Cave (about 1.5 miles and rated moderate) and Ash Cave (about 0.5 miles whether you make a loop around the rim or go through the middle of the gorge and back out, though the gorge trail is paved for accessibility), which are great for preschoolers through adults. If you visit during the rainy season, you’ll be wowed by the waterfalls on these trails. We went in mid-October and unfortunately it’s was almost totally dry and didn’t yet have fall foliage.

For a more rugged hiking experience, try nearby Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve. The rim trail there sits atop massive sandstone cliffs and offers at 2.5 mile loop trail. There are places where this trail is narrow, rocky and slippery – use caution! Many parents opt not to do this with their kids until they’re older.

Distance from Columbus to Dayton: 75 miles/1 hour

If Hocking Hills is the first day trip from Columbus you take, a day trip to Dayton should be your second. There are too many things to do in Dayton to detail in this roundup! I’ve actually been visiting since my own childhood, but we make several trips each year now and keep finding new, unique activities.

Of course Dayton is best known as the home of the National Museum of the US Air Force . It’s truly impressive! There are great displays covering the history of aviation and space travel as well as Ohio’s role in both. You can’t beat the cool factor of the Museum’s collection of retired Air Force One planes that you can walk through . See how leaders from Roosevelt to Clinton rode in style! In recent years they’ve added a lot more hands-on exhibits and simulators for kids, so visitors of all ages will be engaged. Did I mention that admission is FREE ?

If you’re visiting when the weather is nice, Dayton also has plenty of lovely gardens to visit. We especially love Aullwood Gardens Metro Park and look forward to visiting Wegerzyn Gardens and Cox Arboretum – all three of those are totally FREE as well since they’re part of the fantastic Five Rivers MetroParks system.

One of our favorite hidden gems in Dayton is Sunwatch Indian Village . This is an active archeological site, and there’s also great recreation of the Fort Ancient village that stood on the site 800 years ago. You’ll enter through the small but excellent museum that houses both artifacts as well as representations of the Fort Ancient culture. We visited on a gorgeous Saturday and were the only people there, so this is a great place to avoid crowds – but please tell your friends to visit too so that we can support this excellent site.

Springfield

Distance from Columbus to Springfield: 50 miles/50 minutes

Springfield, Ohio is a new one for us but I’m so glad we visited! This is a must-do Ohio day trip for architecture fans thanks to the presence of Frank Lloyd Wright’s incredible Westcott House . It’s the only Prairie house he built in Ohio and sadly it fell into disrepair in the second half of the 20th century. Thankfully in recent years it was lovingly restored by the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy and it opened to the public for tours in 2005 – that’s part of the reason many Ohioans don’t know about it! Weekend tours can and do sell out, so get your tickets a day or two in advance if you’re particular about timing.

While you’re there, swing by the cute Hartman Rock Garden . It’s free and located in someone’s backyard, but don’t let either of those stop you. Ben Hartman’s hand-made creations are absolutely incredible and are still going strong a century later.

While you’re in Springfield, be sure to grab lunch at Guerra’s Krazy Tacos. The Texas-born founder is from a Mexican family and makes high-quality, budget-friendly staples along with creative takes, all served up surrounded by fun decor.

Yellow Springs

Distance from Columbus to Yellow Springs: 55 miles/50 minutes

Looking for a great spring or fall day trip from Columbus? Get to adorable Yellow Springs in under an hour!

The biggest draw is Glen Helen Nature Preserve , which offers a lovely Inman Trail loop hike through the woods that takes you to the yellow spring that gave the town its name. Just up the street in town, grab a slice of pizza from Benito’s – some people claim it serves up the best pizza in Ohio.

If you’re on a day trip with kids, be sure to stop at Young’s Jersey Dairy on your way back to Columbus. This dairy farm has been in the family for over 150 years, but it’s evolved a lot in that time! Today they serve up delicious homemade ice cream and more in their shop. If you want a longer visit, spend time visiting the farm animals, testing your skills at batting cages and mini golf or going down the “fast slide”.

Licking County

Distance from Columbus to Newark: 50 miles/1 hour

Neighboring Licking County is one of the most overlooked places to visit near Columbus, Ohio. There are plenty of options for visitors of all types, all year long! I’ve grouped its towns together here because they’re all close enough that you can mix-and-match for a full day of fun.

We actually opted to do a little winter staycation at the excellent Cherry Valley Hotel and I can’t recommend it enough! Hotel itself is lovely and it’s in a nice central location. This was the prefect place to try out igloo dining when we were looking for fun things to do in Columbus in winter .

The town of Newark is lovely for a walk on a nice day – don’t miss the gorgeous Licking County courthouse at its center. You’ll want to snag a table at Elliot’s Woodfired Pizza , but be prepared for a little wait if there’s a game. Hop across the street on nice days for dessert at Drip Dreams Ice Cream .

For families, flash your COSI card for free admission to The Works . This museum is small but excellent, with high-quality hands-on experiences everywhere you look. The lower level is focused on science and technology, plus a glass studio that has both gaffer demonstrations and optional workshops on Saturdays for older visitors. The upper level is focused on Ohio’s history and development and includes a mock village to explore. We stayed for three hours and had to drag the kids out!

The adorable New England-esque Village of Granville was established in 1805 and its main street, Broadway, shows that age in all the right ways. It’s perfect for a stroll and lunch, or you can even catch a show at the Eisner Center for the Performing Arts at Denison University. Nearby Lynd Fruit Farm (on the way from Columbus) always has something going on to extend your time in the area.

Buckeye Lake

Want a taste of “lake life” close to home? Pop over to Buckeye Lake and spend an afternoon walking on the lovely path next to the shore. You can also rent a kayak or boat, or take a pontoon tour if you don’t feel comfortable navigating on your own. It’s a great summer day trip from Columbus OH!

The Dawes Arboretum

The Dawes Arboretum is just outside of Newark and spans nearly 2000 acres. It’s massive! This hilly property has plenty of variety to warrant repeat visits, including a peaceful Japanese garden, ample hiking trails, periodic sculpture installations, an observation tower and more. You can even tour the property’s historic home during the warmer months.

Ticket prices are very reasonable at $10 per adult and $5 per child, but Dawes also accepts reciprocal membership from other AHS gardens like Franklin Park Conservatory.

This is definitely one of the most fun day trips in Ohio for families, especially in late summer and early fall. Kick off your day with fruit picking at Branstool Orchard or Legend Hills Orchard . Both typically open in July for peaches and then continue for apples through mid-October. Branstool also has one of the nicest pumpkin patches near Columbus Ohio in fall! Legend Hills has a market on-site and is open year-round.

Once you’ve picked your fill, drive 5 minutes around the corner to Velvet Ice Cream at Ye Old Mill. This old-school scoop shop also has a fun little museum built into the seating area, but after exploring families will want to head out to the large grassy meadow in front. There are tables to sit at or you can bring picnic blanket – I keep this one in my trunk at all times. It’s a lovely place to spend an afternoon tossing a frisbee, playing on the playground or watching the swans in the pond.

Schnormeier Gardens

Distance from Columbus to Schnormeier Gardens: 50 miles/1 hour

Garden lovers absolutely must visit Gambier’s Schnormeier Gardens at least once in their lives. This spacious private garden is open annually on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in June. Visitors will fall in love with the in unique and diverse landscapes, from the Chinese Cup Garden to the shady Woodland Garden.

While the Gardens used to be free and drop-in, there’s now a $50 per vehicle charge. Feel free to load up the van! Do make sure to book your tickets in advance as it sells out nearly every year – particularly toward the end of June.

Columbus Ohio Day Trips Within 1.5 Hours

Distance from Columbus to Mansfield: 65 miles/1 hour 15 minutes

I can’t believe it took us nearly four years living in Columbus to get up to Richland County! There are so many things to do in Mansfield OH that we’ve recently gone up a few times – and we still have more to see. You can easily enjoy two of these sites in a single day if you get an early start, as they’re all fairly close together.

The Ohio State Reformatory aka “Shawshank Tour”

When we were recently looking for a couples day trip from Columbus, a trip up to The Ohio State Reformatory was at the top of our list. This defunct prison was the primary filming location for 1994’s “The Shawshank Redemption”, based on Stephen King’s novella “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” – I read it as part of his Different Seasons collection and recommend that you do as well.

Though both the story and movie are set in Maine (like most of King’s work), Mansfield and the surrounding area of Richland County are reasonable stand-ins. During our tour of The Ohio State Reformatory, our guide did an excellent job sharing the history of the Reformatory and and its eventual decline while also weaving in elements of the movie.

While there’s an option to visit the Reformatory on a self-guided tour, I strongly recommend reserving in advance for a guided tour of “the Shawshank prison”. We learned so much and our guide was very engaging!

Pro tip: Because of the understandable lack of climate control in the cell block, dress for temperature extremes if you visit in Winter or Summer.

Kingwood Center Gardens

Kingwood Center Gardens is a lovely place to visit if you enjoy the more refined things in life. This 47 acre estate has beautifully manicured ground that are perfect for a Spring visit. You can also tour the stunning mansion on the property, Kingwood Hall, which still has many of the original furnishings from a century ago. Keep your eyes peeled for the peacocks who live on-site!

Note for Franklin Park Conservatory and other local AHS members: Your membership is not value for reciprocal admission to Kingwood Center Gardens. I believe this restriction also applies to members of The Dawes Arboreturm and Hywet Hall.

Ohio Bird Sanctuary

If you’re looking for a great family day trip from Columbus, OH be sure to put the Ohio Bird Sanctuary on your list. This rescue and rehabilitation facility does great work both with animals and with their educational programs

In my experience it’s a great place for budding naturalists thanks to the diverse species in residence. It started as a raptor rescue so you’ll see plenty of hawks, falcons and even bald eagles! There are also several species of owls as well as a free fly aviary with more docile birds that have been turned over. Our kids loved hand-feeding the blue jays.

The OBS is open year-round Sunday through Tuesday so it’s a nice Columbus day trip option all year long, though you’ll find bigger crowds as the weather gets warm. But please learn from my mistake: stay off the Wood Duck Trail if it’s been rainy!

Downtown Mansfield

While Mansfield is a small town, it’s worth a stop whether you’re an adult or a kid.

For adults, there are several noteworthy on the “Shawshank trail” located in downtown. You’ll find them clearly advertised with signs, but some popular ones include the Bissman Building (the Brewer Hotel in the movie) and Mansfield Antiques Gallery (which played the role of the pawn shop). They’re fun photo ops for movie lovers!

Though it was closed due to damage, Richland Carrousel Park is back open to entertain young visitors. The carousel looks old but it was actually built in 1991 as the first new hand-carved carousel in the US in almost a century.

For a fun throwback, stop in Operation Fandom & Blackbird Records. It’s full of Gen X through Millennial favorites like Star Wars collectibles, rare Pokémon packs, Garbage Pail Kids… and of course vinyl.

Downtown Mansfield even offers two delicious bakeries: Blackbird Bakery and Buckeye Bakery . I’ll let you sample both and decide which one you like best!

Malabar Farm State Park

We haven’t made it yet but one of the most popular things to do near Mansfield Ohio is visit Malabar Farm State Park . The site offers plenty to explore for lovers of both nature and history.

In summer and fall you can tour the farm by wagon, golf cart or hay ride. There are also guided tours of the Big House for adults in April through December. If you’re more interested in exploring nature, there are plenty of hiking trails or you can drive up to the top of Mt. Jeez for great views of Pleasant Valley.

Distance from Columbus to Athens: 75 miles/1 hour 15 minutes

For another wonderful spring day trip from Columbus head down to Athens, home of Ohio University. Just outside of the Convocation Center you can enjoy one of the best places to see cherry blossoms in Ohio! There are more than 200 flowering cherry trees here. It’s not Japan or Washington DC , but it’s still absolutely lovely for a picnic.

You’ll want to follow the updates to make sure you choose a great day to visit, but usually generally late March to mid-April is ideal. While you’re there, be sure to take a walk around the charming historic part of campus as well as the adjacent town.

Distance from Columbus to The Wilds: 75 miles/1 hour 15 minutes

Want to travel overseas and see exotic animals? Me too, but sometimes that isn’t in the cards.

Thankfully right here in Ohio you can see several dozen endangered and threatened species at The Wilds, one of the world’s largest conservation parks at almost 10,000 acres. Witness everything from these southern white rhinos to cheetahs to batengs and more.

This is a wonderful Ohio day trip for the whole family, as the general tour is conducted in an open-air school bus. It feels like an adventure but requires minimal walking so it’s fine for babies through seniors.

We loved our visit to The Wilds so much that we became members – the Family Plus membership covered all six of who visited and parking for less than the cost of a single visit. We look forward to visiting again for one of the specialty tours, like the horseback sunset safari.

The season for The Wilds open-air safari is somewhat limited, running from early May into October. The beginning and end are ideal to avoid the hottest times, but I don’t recommend visiting on a day when rain is in the forecast. We all had fun but wound up soaked and muddy even though we were covered on the bus.

Day Trips from Columbus Ohio Within ~2 Hours

How far you can go on a day trip is like asking the length of a piece of string. There’s no single answer.

But I can tell you that I’ve seen some downright silly far suggestions for day trips from Columbus, Ohio. Barring a special event, there’s not much that makes it sensible to take a road trip that requires driving 3+ hours each way in a single day.

However, there are a few options that are about two hours from Columbus and special enough to warrant visiting even if you can’t stay overnight. Prepare for a long day, but know that it’ll be worthwhile and you’ll have a great time on these fun day trips in Ohio!

Cincinnati Zoo

Distance from Columbus to Cincinnati Zoo: 110 miles/1 hour 45 minutes

While I’d normally advocate spending a weekend in Cincinnati , if you can’t make that happen it’s still pretty easy to pop down for the day to see the excellent Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden . The Cincy Zoo isn’t as big as the Columbus Zoo, but it offers a different vibe and is home to some animal celebrities like Fiona the baby hippo. The Cincinnati Zoo also has lots of keeper chats and animal encounters included with the price of admission – be sure to check the daily schedule – don’t miss Wings of Wonder on a summer visit.

After the zoo, you can stop at Findlay Market for an early dinner. This is one of the best one tank trips from Columbus for families!

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Distance from Columbus to Cuyahoga Valley National Park: 130 miles/2 hours

We’re lucky to have one of America’s 63 National Parks right here in Ohio! It’s preserved to showcase both the area’s natural beauty and the unique historical significance of the Ohio & Erie Canal. While there’s plenty to fill an entire weekend with things to do at Cuyahoga Valley National Park, you can get a taste on a day trip as well. Even better, admission to the Park is free!

The crown jewel of the Park is Brandywine Falls. You can take the gorge trail if you want some good exercise, but the best view of the falls is down the stairs (many of them) from the parking lot in the lower viewing area; the upper viewing area isn’t quite as dramatic but thankfully it offers an accessible option. Keep in mind that the parking lot at Brandywine Falls can get very crowded on beautiful days in the summer, but the falls are most impressive right after a big rain. We had no trouble parking here on an overcast day in April!

Be sure to spend some time hiking around The Ledges, which is a moderate 2 mile loop. The area’s geology is on full display and kids will love running up and down some of the massive boulders. I do recommend waterproof hiking shoes or boots with good tread for the trails in CVNP, as it’s a moist area so there are plenty of spots that are slick with either mud or moss – my kids both wore these boots , while I prefer these low-tops .

If you visit Cuyahoga Valley National Park in the summer, build time into your schedule to watch demonstrations of the canal’s lock system by historical reenactors, enjoy a free concert and take a ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway.

For snacks to refuel during the day, you can snag some Cleveland-made Mitchell’s ice cream cups at Boston Store (adjacent to the visitors center) or stop at The Crooked Kettle Popcorn Company in Peninsula.

If you’ve ended your day at the Canal Exploration Center, it’s easy to pop up to adorable Chagrin Falls for strolling and dinner. We had a great meal at Ponyboys just outside of town, or for fancy dinner with a view you can wipe the mud off and visit 17 River Grille overlooking the lovely Chagrin Falls waterfall.

Distance from Columbus to Vermillion: 120 miles/2 hour 15 minutes

Can’t make it all the way to the ocean or the Gulf of Mexico? One of the best summer day trips in Ohio is to the Lake Erie beach in Vermillion. Main Street Beach offers just the right amount of sand and water to get your fix. At just over 2 hours, it’s the closest beach to Columbus Ohio.

The drive is at the edge of day tripping for most people, but totally manageable for a day at the beach. You can leave Columbus after breakfast and you’ll arrive in Vermillion in time to stroll around the charming town, admire the sailboats on the river and grab a bite to eat before you go relax.

Explore the Old Athens Lunatic Asylum

The eerie mysteries that shroud the Athens Lunatic Asylum have intrigued and peaked curiosities for years. Now known as The Ridges, the Athens Lunatic Asylum operated from 1874 to 1993. The Asylum saw various patients, including civil war veterans, children, and those deemed mentally unwell.

It was meant to only house 550 patients when it opened; the Athens Lunatic Asylum surpassed nearly 2,000 patients by the 1950s. Later, small housing units were built to create small communities for patients to live in.

The hospital became known for its infamous lobotomy procedures along with electroshock therapy, hydrotherapy, and the use of psychotropic drugs.  I would recommend  pairing this with a progressive brewery making this a great couple or friends weekend getaway from Cincinnati

Discover The Historic Side Of Lexington

A great day trip from Cincinnati is Lexington, KY. Lexington is home to plenty of fascinating history. With several of the historic homes and places, visitors to the area can go on a self-guided walk through downtown Lexington to scout out these historic landmarks.

Discover Preble County’s Historic Bridges

A well-kept secret of Preble County, Ohio, has been preserving eight historic covered bridges. Many of which are still in use today.  Each covered bridge has a story to tell, or should I say each person in Preble County has a story about a covered bridge.

Many bridges have overcome fires, tornados, and oversized trucks, but the more romantic side of the covered bridges captures visitors’ attention. Take a day to explore all of the covered bridges in Preble County .  Nearby Hueston Woods is a great spot to stay the night or do a little hiking.

Visitors to this Guinness Book of World Records Holding attraction can add a layer to the ever-growing ball. The attraction is free to the public; however, you must call ahead and schedule a time.

The World’s Largest Ball of Paint is at the Carmicheal home and is open by appointment only. A quick google search will yield the current phone number to contact to set up your tour.

Go Swimming at an Old Quarry in La Grange, KY

Another great day trip within two hours from Cincinnati is La Grange, KY.  Adults can cool off at Falling Rock Park .  It is an old rock quarry that is maintained solely through rainwater! Anyone over 18 can bring a pool raft, noodle, kayak, or paddleboard and relax.

While you are visiting, be sure to visit Mainstreet La Grange, one of the few places in the country where the train runs right down the middle of the road.

Hartman Rock Garden

Catch The View From Rising Park

Soak in breathtaking views of Lancaster, Ohio, by climbing to the top of Rising Park’s Mount Pleasant. Arguably one of Ohio’s most spectacular views, Mount Pleasant overlooks the city of Lancaster with the surrounding foothills in the distance.

To get to the top of Mount Pleasant, visitors enter through Rising Park. A parking lot is adjacent to the trailhead, directly past the tennis courts. If you’d like to see a 35-foot waterfall surrounded by endangered plants, take the boardwalk to the overlook at Hayden Falls Park.

With over 25 miles of trails, Hocking Hills Park is a great place to spend your day exploring. The number one attraction at the park is Old Man’s Cave , which is known for its easy access and picturesque waterfalls and gorge.

Ash Cave is another fan-favorite, with multiple trails and different scenic views. The most appealing of the trails is the one that takes you to the cave floor. There you’ll see the pool of water formed by the waterfall up above. 

Cedar Falls may not be the region’s tallest waterfall, but it’s definitely the widest – and the hike here is a little under a mile. 

After a day of adventure, head over to Millstone BBQ and enjoy some delicious smoked meats.

3. Sharonville

Established in 1962, Sharonville is a hidden gem for museum lovers and nature enthusiasts. 

As one of the oldest parks in the state, Sharon Woods is rich with history and outdoor activities to keep you busy for days. The visitor center has exhibits that you can walk through to learn about the park’s past as well as the wildlife that resides there. The 2.6-mile trail around the lake is popular for joggers and bikers looking for their daily dose of exercise. 

Located within the park is the Heritage Village Museum where you can learn about Ohio’s first settlers and take guided tours. 

Trammel Fossil Park , named after the family who donated the 10 acres to the state, is one of the very few places open to the public for avid fossil diggers. Spend the day hunting for unknown artifacts. 

Overflowing with charm, Newark is a real eye-pleaser with art scattered around the town in all different forms.

Explore the Ohio Center for History, Art, and Technology and see the best of what central Ohio has to offer as you hop between the 13 buildings.

Admire one of the world’s largest geometrical earthworks at The Newark Earthworks , originally created as a collaboration of a cemetery, temple, and observatory. 

Dawes Arboretum is a wondrous outdoor museum made up of exquisite trees,12 miles of trails and a driving trail for those who’d prefer not to leave their vehicle.

At the National Heisey Glass Museum , you can see the remnants of glass art pieces that were created between 1896-1957. 

Renovated to recreate its original look from 1928, the Midland Theatre is an active theater; Travel back in time while you sit to watch the latest blockbusters. Tours are also available for history buffs. 

The beauty doesn’t stop here. Check out the Cherry Valley Hotel , even if you don’t plan on spending the night, to appreciate its splendor.

5. Olentangy Indian Caverns

Formed over a million years ago thanks to an underground river, the caverns are said to have once been used as a shelter by the Wyandotte tribe. At the entrance of the caverns, you can see the initials of J.M. Adams who rediscovered the caves in 1812. You can choose to go on a guided tour of the caves or go under and explore on your own.

Surprisingly, there is more to Olentangy Indian Caverns than just exploration. Visit the Richard F. Leitch Museum to learn more about the history of the caverns and check out the bones of an Ox that fell to its death in 1818. Some family-friendly activities include a treasure hunt maze, a petting zoo, gem mining, and a mini-golf course.

Stop by the gift shop before you leave to buy a keepsake to remember your trip. 

6. Ludlow Falls

The village of Ludlow Falls actually hides a stunning 15-foot waterfall that spills into a vast river. The crest of the waterfall is about 60-feet, making it one of the widest of its kind in the state of Ohio. 

The best time to visit the falls is at the beginning of spring -when the winter snow has begun to melt and the waterfall is at its fullest. 

To see more of what the town has to offer, head over to the Brukner Nature Center for an afternoon stroll.

There are two easy-going hikes here, averaging at about 2 miles, that take you through thick woods, around bodies of water, and gives you a chance to mingle with the wildlife. 

Finish up with a tasty dinner at Laura’s Country Diner , and be sure to try their fried chicken!

7. Muncie, IN

Nicknamed “Little Chicago” in the 1920s, Muncie was once a hotspot for gambling and liquor during the prohibition era. Since then, the city has gained a reputable status for its growing development of museums.

Bring the whole family and head over to the Muncie Children’s Museum where kids can learn about trades including how to build a house and repair a car. 

Grab lunch at the former grocery store, Cammack Station , for a delicious selection of fried foods and the fan-favorite root beer float. 

You can easily spend your entire day exploring the Minnetrista Cultural Center and its local history, splendid gardens, exquisite art and connection to nature. The museum revolves around 5 mansion-like homes that were once owned by the Ball Brothers in the late 1800s. 

Although the homes are reserved for special events, you can admire the architecture as you walk through the gardens that surround them. You can explore the grounds free of charge, but if you would like to enter the museum there is an admissions fee. 

Every trip to the museum is different with an ever changing display, so you’ll get a completely new experience each time you visit.

8. Cumberland 

Take a trip to Africa without ever leaving the state of Ohio at Cumberland’s number one attraction, The Wilds . With over 9,000-acres, this open-air safari tour gives you the authentic feeling of African exploration at an affordable rate. 

The Wilds was created to help with animal preservation and to educate about Africa’s different species and their importance.  The two hour tour will take you through a grassland of endangered species like cheetahs, African painted dogs, zebras, and more. 

Arrive for your tour about thirty minutes early and walk through the Discovery Field Station until it is safari time. For an even more exciting adventure, opt for the Zipline Safari Tour to check out the grounds from a birds eye view.

When you stop at the Carnivore Conservation Center , grab a quick lunch from the Terrace Café . 

9. Salt Fork State Park

With over 20,000 acres and tons of outdoor activities, there’s something for everyone at Salt Fork State Park. Home to one of the largest inland beaches in Ohio, the park is the perfect place to spend the day swimming, boating, and bathing in the sun.

Within the park is the Salt Fork Golf Course , which is popular amongst golfers for its extensive greenery and stunning views. 

There are 13 hiking trails to enjoy,  ranging from easy to moderate, each with diverse views and a chance to see thriving wildlife. 

The park is a birdwatchers dream with songbirds like the scarlet tanager, cardinal, and Kentucky warbler. 

Visit the Stone House Museum to learn about the land’s plentiful history and take in the view of the beautiful lake. 

10. Cincinnati

Known as the “Queen City”, Cincinnati is located right on the north bank of the Ohio River and surrounded by rolling hills. Stunning views isn’t the only thing the city has to offer. It’s growing economy makes it a cultural hub with a fast growing social scene. 

Established in 1990, the Cincinnati Museum Center is home to the Cincinnati Union Terminal , and is made up of three exquisite museums:

Grab lunch at Wind’s Café and enjoy a delicious meal from the seasonal menu on the outdoor patio.

Partake in afternoon shopping at stores like Urban Handmade and Super-Fly Comics & Games.

Before you leave, stop by Young’s Jersey Dairy for some freshly made ice cream – and don’t forget to thank the cows for their contribution. 

14. Ohio Caverns

Known as “America’s Most Colorful Caverns”, Ohio Caverns is the largest in the state, boasting with picture perfect scenes. 

According to Ohio Caverns, Ohio’s Outstanding Natural Wonder , the caverns were accidentally discovered by a 17 year old boy back in 1897.

There are over 2 miles of passageways to explore that go as far down as 103 feet. The guided tours are usually about one hour in length and teach you about the wonders of the cave and how it came to be. 

The caverns are open year round, so there is no wrong time to come and enjoy. But, if you come during the warmer months, you can stop by the park above the caverns for a picnic. 

Powell may be a small town, but its main attraction is bound to keep you entertained all day long. 

Repeatedly ranked as the number one zoo in the country, Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is fun for the whole family, with a zoo experience like no other. 

There are 650 different species – over 9,000 animals – within the zoo, and its nonprofit status means a visit here helps support over 70 conservation projects worldwide.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is located between Cleveland and Akron along the Cuyahoga River. It’s one of the nation’s 61 National Parks and the only National Park in Ohio . Inside the park, you’ll find forests, hills, hiking trails , and waterfalls. Highlights include Beaver Marsh, Brandywine Falls, The Ledges, Blue Hen Falls, and The Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail.

2. The Wilds 

The Wilds, located in Cumberland, is one of the most unique places you’ll find in Ohio . Without leaving the midwest, you can experience an open-air safari tour at this 9,000+ acre non-profit wildlife park and conservation center (which is a partner of the Columbus Zoo ). You’ll get to see some incredible animals, including zebras, rhinos, antelopes, giraffes, cheetahs, and more.

3. Hocking Hills State Park 

Hocking Hills State Park in Logan is a gorgeous area for enjoying the outdoors and one of the most popular day trips from Columbus, Ohio . You’ll find plenty of hiking , mountain biking, and camping. If you want to make this an overnight trip, there are lots of great cabins to choose from. I enjoyed the private cabins at the Inn and Spa at Cedar Falls and Cherry Ridge Retreat for a romantic getaway.

4. Mad River Mountain

Mad River Mountain is Ohio’s largest ski and snowboard resort . Located in Zanesfield, it’s a great spot to learn to ski for the first time or to hone your skills close to home. As part of Vail Resorts, you can even use your Epic Pass here.

5. Ohio Caverns 

Ohio Caverns has crystal stalactites, stalagmites, and other amazing formations. The caverns are the largest in the state and are recognized as “America’s Most Colorful Caverns.”

You can take a guided tour that lasts about 1 hour, and don’t forget to bring a jacket — the caverns remain at a constant 54 degrees throughout the year.

6. Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park and Museum

Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park and Museum, located in Hamilton (in Butler County ), is a fantastic 300+ acre outdoor sculpture park that you can drive through in your car, or you can rent a golf cart (I highly recommend this). Be sure to stop into the Ancient Sculpture Museum to see the Greek, Roman, Etruscan, Syrian, and Egyptian sculptures that date back to 1550 B.C.

7. Young’s Jersey Dairy

Young’s Jersey Dairy in Yellow Springs is a great spot to visit with young kids. You’ll find different events and activities throughout the year, including mini-golf, goats and cows, rides, pumpkin picking, and more! If you’re visiting in late summer, be sure to check out the sunflower field in Yellow Springs, too.

8. Newport Aquarium

The Newport Aquarium isn’t in Ohio, actually. It’s located across the river from Cincinnati in Newport, Kentucky, but it’s still close enough to make a great day trip.

My favorite parts were the giant Pacific octopus (seriously, the trip is worth it to see this guy alone!), the 2 white alligators, and the huge tank that features sharks, a sea turtle, a giant 300lb grouper, and shark rays.

9. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland is a must-visit for anyone who loves music. The museum features traditional exhibits along with The Garage, a hands-on area featuring 12 instrument stations with instructional videos to try. The museum’s building and iconic glass pyramid were designed by famed architect I.M. Pei , who also designed the pyramid in front of The Louvre in Paris, France.

10. Salt Fork State Park

This isn’t just another state park. Salt Fork State Park, located in Guernsey County , is legendary for its ties to the legend of Bigfoot . It’s also Ohio’s biggest state park , covering over 17,000 acres of land. At the park, you’ll find a walk-through archery course, a lake for fishing and boating, a dog park, golf and mini-golf, a beach for swimming, over 14 hiking trails, and more.

11. National Museum of the U.S. Air Force

The National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton is the world’s largest military aviation museum . It houses over 360 aerospace vehicles and missiles and features exhibits illustrating military aviation history. There’s also a flight simulator and 3D theater.

12. Kings Island

King’s Island is an amusement park located just north of Cincinnati in Mason, Ohio. It’s been around since the 1970s and was even featured on The Partridge Family and The Brady Bunch ! Highlights include thrill rides, Planet Snoopy, and Soak City Water Park.

13. Pro Football Hall of Fame

The Pro Football Hall of Fame, located in Canton, is a mecca for football. You can wander the Hall of Fame at your leisure or take a guided tour.

14. The Farm at Walnut Creek 

The Farm at Walnut Creek, located in Sugarcreek, Ohio, is a working farm that features over 500 animals, including giraffes, camels, zebras, and kangaroos. You can drive along the 2.3-mile trail or take a horse-drawn wagon ride to feed the animals.

15. Loveland Castle

Did you know that you can visit a castle — in Ohio?! Loveland Castle is located in Loveland and was built in the 1920s. You can take a self-guided tour, explore the grounds, play games, or enjoy a picnic by the river.

16. Ohio Bird Sanctuary

The Ohio Bird Sanctuary, located in Mansfield, is home to over 30 different species of birds who, because of injuries, can’t live in the wild. The 90-acre preserve also has hiking trails, a children’s play area, and picnic areas.

Sure, Ohio might not be on a short list of beach havens in the United States. But that doesn't mean you can't find somewhere to soak up the sun this summer!

We've compiled a list of beach spots within driving distance of Ohio's major cities, including Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland.

Some are closer than others, but either way, it's time to start planning your beach trip and hitting the road to find sandy shores.

Ohio has a fair share of beaches where you can soak up the sun, so we'll start our journey in the Buckeye State before looking beyond state borders.

Play pingpong between trips among food stations at Punch Bowl Social in downtown Cleveland, where $3 “Momosas” will be offered against a jazz background, or amble among the butterflies in the Cleveland Botanical Garden’s Costa Rica glasshouse in University Circle, where brunch reservations with a choice among three seatings are due by May 4.

Or cut a lilac bouquet from the yard, set out your best cutlery and china on a freshly ironed tablecloth to frame a delectable brunch or dinner picked up hot and ready to eat from La Vera Party Center in Willoughby Hills. Have your Mother’s Day meal in the dining room, make it an outdoor meal in the garden if the weather is nice or choose another favorite location for your feast.

Lakeside dining with Lake Erie views is the promise kept at The Lodge at Geneva–on-the-Lake, where made-to-order omelets and other treats are offered for Mother’s Day at Horizons Restaurant. The morning-to-midday brunch menu also is served through the early evening at the Lounge. Helen Bresee's Trip around the World

The Columbus Women’s Travel collection captures the travels of three Columbus women and highlights a trip one of them, Helen Bresee, took around the world with two of her friends, Fran and Gilbert Olsen, between 1936 and 1937. Helen Bresee’s portion of the trip lasted 11 months. During that time, she recorded her daily activities in four separate diaries. These diaries allow her story and experiences to live on. Additionally, Helen and Fran both captured footage from their trips. They then pieced it together into a video. This video is now part of the collection and available for viewing.

Helen’s trip began on August 24, 1936, when she departed from Berwyn, Illinois by train and headed west. On August 26, 1936, Helen observed the Great Salt Lake in Utah: " This afternoon we crossed miles of salt beds, then the Great Salt Lake and finally the desert... For miles there was no sight or sign of a living thing except sage. " From Utah her train tip took her to San Francisco where she met up with her friends Fran and Gilbert and sailed to Hawaii. The departure from San Francisco was scheduled for August 28, 1936. Helen lamented that the boat would not set sail until nighttime. This disappointed her as she wanted to get good footage of the then-under-construction Golden Gate Bridge, “ we learned that the boat wasn't to sail until midnight. This was a great disappointment to me as I can't take good movies for our departure ... After we passed the Golden Gate and under the cables for the new bridge. I went to bed. ”

They departed from San Francisco and sailed Hawaii, at this time a United States territory and not a state, where they toured the dole pineapple plant on September 12, 1936. Helen remarked that “ the pleasant reception room had 3 faucets - one of cold water and two of pineapple juice. ” Many of her entries commented on the foods she ate during her travels. She was especially fond of fruits and sweets. After departing Hawaii Helen and her friends sailed to Japan and then to Korea which was occupied by the Japanese military. They observed the life and diets of the Korean people. Helen’s diary entry for October 18 mentioned that “ Every house has huge jars in front of it. They are called kimchi and are used for pickle jars. ”

Helen's trip took place during a pivotal moment in world history. Much of her journey took place just before the outbreak of war between China and Japan, a conflict which grew into World War II by 1939. This tension can be seen in her work. She recounts traveling through China and noticing the presence of soldiers and warships. On November 7 she writes, " For the first time since leaving home the men's and women's washrooms are separated. However, an armed soldier sits out in front of the woman's [SIC]. At every station too the soldiers are on guard. " Later, while in Nanjing, China on November 11, she comments on the presence of colonial warships in the harbor, " a Japanese warship was anchored at one side of the harbor and a mile away two British warships. " The war in Asia began on July 7, 1937, shortly after Helen returned to the United States of America.

They left China on November 21, 1936 and sailed to Indonesia. On December 2, Helen described her experience eating mangosteens for the first time, " They are fruits with hard thick shells and small white sections in side [SIC]. The tasted is indescribable but delicious. " While sailing through Indonesia Helen wrote about the presence of  sharks following their ocean liner, " I saw a dark object swimming in the water. I knew at once that it must be a shark. Then we saw several. They were attracted by the garbage the ship had thrown out... One was at least 8 feet long. There was also a 3' baby. One came to the surface and opened his mouth where we could see his rows of teeth. "

In late January the traveling trio arrived in India, a British colony at the time. The visited Calcutta and later, on January 29, they were in Darjeeling and took a day trip to see Mt. Everest. Helen expressed that she was not sure which of the mountains was the famous one, " Several people pointed out Mt. Everest. we saw various peaks, but weren't quite sure which was the world famous one. " They left India in early February and made their way by boat to Egypt. While passing Aden, modern day Yemen, on February 15, Helen watched an Italian movie, " After dinner there was an Italian movie. we sat thru two reels of it and then went to bed as I really hadn't much idea what it was about. "

Helen and her friends spent a week in Egypt and the middle east. They visited the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Sphinx by camel on February 21, 1937, " Our cars could take us but we preferred to ride a camel... We passed the largest pyramid which with the two others we had been seeing for some time. The size was really astounding. We continued on to the Sphinx. " While visiting these historic structures Helen also complained about her clothing, " My skirt was much too tight but every one [SIC] else was having the same trouble. " Her experiences are tied together by such comments. She recalls the feelings of discomfort as often as she comments on new experiences. The diaries chronicle the frustrating elements of travel. They left Egypt and visited the Dead Sea where Helen remarked, " The water felt very sticky and was so salty it made one's lips pucker. "

After the Middle East they sailed to Italy. They remained in Italy from March 9 to April 17, 1937. While in Florence, on March 27, Helen commented on a meal she had, "We had wine, potatoes, peas, and ice cream with chocolate sauce. I liked it all but the peas which were choked in garlic. "  In between her commentary of local food she also remarked on the state of the world. During a visit to the Doge's Palace in Venice she remarked that, " Here [Doge's Palace] Mussolini and Hitler met and departed enemies. Now they are said to be good friends again. " Hitler and Mussolini's alliance, which later included Japan, was the basis of the Axis Powers of World War two. After visiting Italy Helen and the Olsen's went separate ways for the remainder of the trip. Helen continued to Yugoslavia, Hungary, Switzerland, and Germany, while the Olsen's headed north to Scandinavia. Their journey is captured in the collection's video footage. The rest of Helen's journey is recounted in her diaries.

Upon arriving in Berlin on May 27, Helen observed a demonstration of German troops, " German troops and a a band were marching up and down the center terrace of Unter den Linden.... Outside [the palace] there was a little garden in which the Kaiser and his chancellor made the decision about the last war. [World War I]" Her statement of the "last war" feels especially ominous as the second World War had not yet begun. However, she seems aware of the tension over Europe during her time in Berlin. In that same vein, on May 28, she commented on the 1936 Berlin Olympics and what became of the stadiums and athlete housing, " After breakfast this morning I started out alone for the Reichssportfeld.... Of course the place was rather deserted now. They estimate that about 2,000,000 people came to Berlin for the Olympics last year.... All the male participants were housed about 20 miles away and brought by military trucks. The houses are now used for soldiers. "

On May 31, Helen left Germany and traveled through Belgium. She arrived in Paris, France on June 2, 1937. On June 8th she visited Notre Dame which she felt " was splendid from the outside. The inside I found less impressive ." She also observed the cemeteries at Belleau Wood and commented on the scars left from World War I, " The woods still have considerable debris in them. There are twisted pieces of metal belonging to airplanes, pieces of shell, and scrap iron. Trees with shell holes are still to be seen. A number of German machine guns are still standing. " Helen left France on June 18 and sailed across the Atlantic to return home. She arrived in New York City on June 25, 1937. The last line of her diary reads " ...my trip is over. May I get another chance to go again before too long! " She got that chance. She went on nearly forty more trips between 1937 and 1981. She visited countries that no longer appear on the maps and saw enough sights to last a lifetime. But those stories are as of yet unread.
