How Def Leppard Ended the ‘Pyromania’ World Tour on a High

When Def Leppard completed their Pyromania World Tour on Feb. 7, 1984, there was no doubt they'd made it to the big time.

After 178 shows over almost exactly a year, they had moved from a support act playing medium-sized venues to a headline attraction selling tens of thousands tickets a night. However, it wasn't all smooth sailing.

The road trip had kicked off on Feb. 9, 1983, with two warm-up club shows in London and Dublin before commencing a full run of 177 performances that included a total of 115 in North America. The first 24 of those had been as opening act for Billy Squier, but as sales of their third album, Pyromania , took hold, and MTV A-listed their video for lead single “Photograph,” things changed rapidly.

The second-to-last show took place at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, with Eddie Money , Uriah Heep and rising stars  Motley Crue in support, and 55,000 fans in attendance. At that point, the band reported, Pyromania was selling 100,000 copies a day in the United States and kept off the No.1 spot by Michael Jackson’s Thriller .

“From a professional point of view, it was probably one of the best times of our lives,” bassist Rick Savage said later. “Looking back, and hearing old mixing-desk tapes, we were fucking atrocious most of the time! For some reason, though, it didn't really matter. That is when hype will work in your favor, because when you're hot, you're hot.”

Contributing to that heat was a 17-song set that usually included six tracks from their latest LP: "Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop),” "Photograph,” “Foolin’,” "Rock of Ages,” "Billy's Got a Gun" and ”Stagefright.” Pyromania had marked a move away from their heavy metal beginnings and, with the help of producer John Robert “Mutt” Lange, their move toward a hard rock sound that blended pop with as many other influences as they could fit in.

It was also their first album with guitarist Phil Collen , who’d replaced Pete Willis partway through the recording. “Phil is more jazz-rock oriented than Pete ever was,” Savage reflected at the time. “He’s what we call a speed freak. Occasionally he tries to see how many notes he can put in a five-second solo. And with him being more jazz-rock-oriented, he does have a stronger background of chords and what have you. He and Steve [Clark] complement each other really well because they have contrasting styles.”

Collen recalled his debut appearance at the tour warm-up show at London’s Marquee Club, noting that the Jack Murphy Stadium concert had taken place less than a year later. “That was really exciting, to go from no one knowing who you are to getting mobbed and escorted out of a restaurant, stuff like that,” he said. “It’s never really been like that since then. So that was a very exciting, very strange period.”

“We were really good as a band by the time we finished the Pyromania  tour," he told UCR  in 2013. "So the whole thing, I don’t want to say it was like a blur, because I remember all of it, but it was probably the most exciting period of the whole career. ... I think the first time you make it and the first time you go platinum, double platinum and quadruple platinum, it’s unbelievable just how everything changes around you, even though you’re exactly the same.”

For singer  Joe Elliott , the tour featured the highest highs and lowest lows of his career up to that point. He later told Classic Rock that “Photograph” and the follow-up singles “Rock of Ages” and “Foolin’” received so much airplay that he “turned the radio off ‘cause I got sick of hearing us every 20 minutes!” However, it also put Elliott through a couple of careful-what-you-wish-for moments.

Def Leppard, "Rock of Ages"

In June 1983, he began experiencing throat problems that forced the band to drop eight shows; all but one were rescheduled. He admitted to MTV  he was ordered into complete silence and had to communicate with a writing pad. “I ended up putting tape on my mouth, because I'm like that once I get going," he explained. "It's really difficult. I've still got this pad. I actually filled a full pad up. Everything I wanted to ask anybody I had to write down. It was terrible."

Asked if he was doing something wrong with his voice, he replied, “No – what it is, basically, it was four and a half months nonstop. An hour and a half a night. And it just needed a rest.” He added he was relieved that two nights in Detroit were going ahead because, with ticket sales of 28,000 both nights, they’d beaten a record previously set by Led Zeppelin .

In November 1983, Elliott was forced to deal with backlash over comments he made onstage two months earlier. Known among fans as “the El Paso incident,” it took place on Sept. 7 in Tucson while the singer encouraged the crowd to clap along during “Rock of Ages.” “Last night we played in El Paso, that place with all the greasy Mexicans, and they made a lot more noise than that!” he told them.

Word soon spread to the point that band manager Cliff Burnstein received news that “they're burning Def Leppard records and breaking them over the air in El Paso.” Until then, no one knew there was a problem – and only drummer Rick Allen had actually known about Elliott’s words. “I tried to crouch lower into my drum kit, looking over the tops of the drums, thinking, 'No you didn't say that. You couldn't have,’” he said in the band memoir Animal Instinct . “Fortunately, nobody in the audience seemed to notice it.”

But the “greasy Mexicans” remark was reported in the press, and by November it was beginning to seriously impact the band’s image. “That comment, I swear, was aimed at five Hispanic kids who were spitting at us, throwing Jack Daniels and kung fu stars at the band," Elliott explained. "It was aimed at those five kids, not at anybody else in El Paso itself. I was slagging off those five bastards.”

He added that the phrase itself wasn’t intended to be so incendiary, and that it had come into his head “purely because I'm a Cheech & Chong fan, and they use it all the time.” The backlash prompted the cancellation of a proposed tour date in El Paso in 1988, and the band didn’t return there until 2000 (though they toured Mexico in 1993 without any problems).

But there was no doubt the Pyromania World Tour was a massive success. “When I watched Marc Bolan on Top of the Pops , I just wanted to be up on that same stage, covered in glitter and wearing women’s shoes,” Elliott said later. “I dreamed of being the singer in the biggest rock ’n’ roll band in the world. Pyromania made it happen.”

While more turmoil was in store for Def Leppard, unimaginable further success also waited, as producer Lang began thinking about their fourth album and suggested that, since every other rock band in the world was trying to make a “Pyromania 2,” they should instead look at chart rival Thriller for inspiration. A great deal of Hysteria was the result.

How Def Leppard’s ‘Pyromania’ Tour Changed Everything

When Def Leppard's Pyromania was released in 1983, the Sheffield band was still playing club-sized venues in the U.K. As radio and MTV leaned heavily into the album's singles, the band's popularity exploded, and, in turn, the venues they played expanded, too.

Four decades years later, the group is looking back at its career, starting with its earliest days, in a new book, Definitely: The Official Story of Def Leppard . The band digs deep into its archives, working with Genesis Publications over the past two years to sort through piles of photos and band-related ephemera.

The book is loaded with photos; you can see some of them below. But there's also an extensive oral history that covers Def Leppard's timeline album by album. "It was like doing a documentary," guitarist Phil Collen tells UCR in a recent conversation. But, he adds, "Most books are past tense. We're still current, touring and actively putting out records."

Collen, who joined the band during the Pyromania sessions, outlines some highlights from the era when Def Leppard became worldwide stars below.

The success of Pyromania "When that album got going, it exploded so quickly. The first gig at the Marquee [ on Feb. 9, 1983] ... I’m from London, so I’d played there so many times with [my previous band] Girl. We actually had a residency there. So it was like playing my front room with my buddies. I knew all of the guys in Def Leppard, so it was cool. It definitely wasn’t intimidating. But when we got going, we were shocked at the success of it, especially when we got to the States. My first American show was the Omni in Atlanta, Georgia, opening up for Billy Squier . But we were still an opening act, so I’d done that before. I’d opened for Kiss , UFO , ZZ Top and lots of different bands before that. But it was shocking more than anything else, the rate that things went [with Pyromania ]. With MTV, we kind of looked more like Duran Duran than we did Judas Priest . So you had this different appeal going. A lot of things clicked when that record came out."

Listen to Def Leppard's 'Stagefright'

The guitar solo for "Stagefright" was recorded in a single take " Mutt Lange is an honor to work with. It’s like going to school with your favorite subject. He would just know things and he’d get you to sing things that were out of your range. He’d get you to play stuff that you couldn’t actually normally play. He’d [be encouraging] and go, 'Yeah, you can do that. I heard you sing that before. You can sing that. So more than anything else, you ended up not wanting to disappoint him. There was this wonderful vibe and groove going. I’d met Mutt before because I knew the guys [before  Pyromania ]. I think they were doing High ‘n’ Dry when I first met Mutt. They were in the rehearsal room just working some songs out. So I knew the vibe, and that was kind of cool, you know? It slotted in straight away and he was so friendly and inspiring. He’d say, 'Have a listen to this song.' It was 'Stagefright' and he said, 'Take it home and think of a solo.' I came in the next day and that was the only first take on the album apparently. I just plugged my 50-watt head into the speaker cabinet that they already had miked up and boom, away you go. The next thing I know, we’re on tour. It was crazy."

Def Leppard played with two drummers before  Hysteria  was released "It was all about making Rick [Allen] feel comfortable [ after his accident ]. Jeff Rich [from Status Quo], who Rick chose, it was just in case the electronic stuff broke down. Because we didn’t know back then. Jeff missed one of the shows - he missed a flight and got there late, and Rick just carried on and it was totally fine. The [shows with both drummers] were cool. It was a little bit weird. It was cool playing with two drummers, but it was even better when it was just Rick, obviously. It was like, 'Ah, the gang’s back together!'"

How a motel burglary made Phil Collen stop wearing a shirt onstage, leading to a new look "It was in Ft. Myers, Florida. I was in a motel-type thing on the beach and someone just walked up, knocked the door down and took all of my shit. I had no clothes, nothing. I borrowed things - I had a pair of flip-flops and Union Jack shorts, and that was it. These kids at the next show said, 'We’ll take you to the mall.' So I went to an Army surplus store and got some camo pants. That was it. That was the kind of look, really, for a while. It just felt more comfortable. And you know, I’ve always stayed in shape, so that wasn’t a problem. Also, I used to sweat a lot. I don’t seem to sweat as much now. I’ve kind of got it down, but I’d be dripping [after the shows]."

Watch Def Leppard's 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' Video

The magic moment when Phil Collen found his chemistry with guitarist Steve Clark "I think the main thing is that there’s so many guitar players in two guitar bands that both play exactly the same thing and it’s a little bit amateur. If you see an orchestra, they’re playing counter-rhythms, countermelodies, everything [in that vein]. So we decided to do that. We obviously took a leaf out of Brian May’s book. You know, the Queen stuff was orchestrated. We got into this guitar orchestration thing and especially with Mutt Lange there, he’d be pushing that agenda forward. We’d be doing, like, 16 guitar parts on one thing. Not gratuitously, but making them work with the vocals and the song. We kind of set out on a mission. There was so much of that on Hysteria . It was really great to utilize two very creative guitar players that you would think would play very differently, but you could actually put them together and you’d get all of these different things coming out that would support the vocal and the narrative. It was really cool. Once we hit on that, it was like finding gold, for both of us."

def leppard pyromania tour dates

The 40th anniversary edition of Def Leppard's Pyromania: Come for the originals, stay for the "utterly fierce" unreleased live album

Def leppard's difficult third album, which lit the blue touch-paper for the band, now expanded with demos and live albums.

Def Leppard: Pyromania 40th anniversary edition artwork detail

You can trust Louder Our experienced team has worked for some of the biggest brands in music. From testing headphones to reviewing albums, our experts aim to create reviews you can trust. Find out more about how we review.

Not long after the album was released in January 1983, Pyromania looked to be Def Leppard ’s ultimate hit. Next album Hysteria changed that, but Pyromania remains their second-biggest seller. Sales of just over 10 million – only a couple of platinum discs behind its follow-up – paint Pyromania as Hysteria ’s snotty little brother. Fewer hits, less time on MTV for sure, but… rockier. The one that it’s cooler to love.

Its creation, though, was ridiculously fraught. Producer Mutt Lange ’s legendary quest for perfection led to constant re-recording and overdubs that drove every member of the band crazy at some point. Equally painful was taking the decision midway through to sack founding guitarist Pete Willis for his increasingly dysfunctional behaviour. Fortunately the choice of Phil Collen as replacement proved inspired – meaning that Pyromania still sounds stunning 40 years on.

The deluxe version, in a vinyl albumsized box, includes four CDs, a largeformat book (ace notes by Classic Rock ’s Paul Elliott) plus a Blu-ray (containing Atmos/5.1/ Stereo/instrumental mixes, and five promo videos). CD1 presents the original 10-song album, remastered. Rock Rock (Till You Drop), Photograph, Stagefright, Too Late For Love, Die Hard The Hunter, Foolin’, Rock Of Ages, Billy’s Got A Gun … sheesh, what a hot streak. Even ‘the other two’, Comin’ Under Fire and Action! Not Words , hold up well.

CD2 is the cherry here, though. On it are 22 rarities including ‘the long lost unfinished eleventh track’ No You Can’t Do That , with a swaggering melody but, sadly, no vocals. Equally intriguing are six short untitled instrumental demos that reveal the band riffing, searching, digging for diamonds. Then come demos of five songs that emerged, raw but laden with promise. Finally, rough mixes of all 10 Pyromania tracks, in album order. ‘Rough’ is a relative term, given that they are Mutt Lange works-in-progress, but some reveal where Leppard actually dialled back on his embellishments.

Also in the box are two live CDs. One of them – a 15-song set from the LA Forum in September 1983 – is great, but was previously released in 2009 as part of the Pyromania Deluxe Edition. The other – a six-song set from December 1983, when Leppard were halfway up a seven-band festival bill in Dortmund, Germany – is previously unreleased, and utterly fierce.

As well as various vinyl configurations, there’s also a two-CD version that pairs the remasters with just 11 of the Rarities and four LA Forum tracks… But the four-CD box is ‘only’ £75, so spoil yourself.

Def Leppard’s ‘Pyromania’ Gets 40th Anniversary Editions

def leppard pyromania tour dates

Def Leppard’s 1983 blockbuster, Pyromania , has been expanded for its 40th anniversary with previously unheard demos and live performances from the era. The album launched the band into rock legend status, with the global hit singles, “Photograph” and “Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)” and “Rock of Ages.” The new editions, available on 2-CDs , a 4-CD/Blu-ray Super Deluxe Edition and half-speed master LP arrived April 26, 2024, via Island Records. [The U.K. editions are available here .] Listen to many of the previously unreleased performances and watch Joe Elliott explain how “Rock of Ages” came about, below.

Pyromania , their third studio album, saw the band—Joe Elliott, Steve Clark, Phil Collen, Rick Savage, Rick Allen and Pete Willis—embrace a more radio-friendly sound. And although it peaked at “only” #2 in the U.S., it ultimately earned Diamond certification, representing sales of more than 10 million copies in the States. It was Def Leppard ‘s second collaboration with producer Robert John “Mutt” Lang. The 2024 deluxe edition has been executive produced by Elliott and Ronan McHugh.

The Super Deluxe Edition includes a Blu-ray containing an ATMOS mix of the album overseen by Giles Martin and a book with rare photos by Ross Halfin and new interviews with band members.

Elliott explains how the lyrics to “Rock of Ages” came about and says they knew they had a hit on their hands because it has such an unusual arrangement. “The song was written in the most unconventional way possible,” he says.

Def Leppard have a co-headlining tour with Journey in 2024. Their special guests at various shows are the Steve Miller Band, Heart and Cheap Trick. Tickets are available here  and here .

ADRENALIZE - The Ultimate Def Leppard Experience Announces Outdoor Summer Tour Dates

Starting in July, enjoy all the chart-topping anthems that made Def Leppard an iconic force in arena rock.

pixeltracker

On the heels of multiple sold out shows at premier indoor venues in the Northeastern U.S., Adrenalize - The Ultimate Def Leppard Experience is bringing their high-energy recreation of a live Def Leppard concert to outdoor stages beginning in July at Wicker Memorial Park in Highland, Indiana.

Drawing their name from Def Leppard's fifth studio album (which debuted at No. 1 on both the UK Albums Chart and the U.S. Billboard 200), Adrenalize recreates the chart-topping, chest-thumping anthems that made Def Leppard the iconic and dominant force in arena rock of the '80s and beyond.

Performances are packed with all of the much-loved, hook-laden radio and MTV mega-hits like "Foolin'", "Rock of Ages," "Photograph," "Hysteria," "Rocket," "Animal," "Armageddon It," "Love Bites," and "Pour Some Sugar On Me," along with deep cuts like "Wasted," "High 'n' Dry," and "Switch 625!"

Def Leppard, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019, is one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold more than 100 million records worldwide. They also hold the honor of being the top UK hard rock touring act, grossing $514 million worth of tickets since July 1980. This places them as the highest UK rock band earner in the last 42 years ahead of Iron Maiden.

No rock band epitomized the spirit of the '80s more than Def Leppard. Fusing the hard edge of heavy metal to a melodic pop sensibility, the British rockers dominated that decade with two classic albums- 1983's Pyromania and 1987's Hysteria- whose massive sales were fueled by the band's near-constant presence on MTV.

Adrenalize - The Ultimate Def Leppard Experience is already garnering the attention, admiration, and accolades of well-seasoned "ears" in the music industry. Multi-platinum, Grammy Award winning engineer/mixer Peter Moshay, who mixed both of the band's sold out shows at Daryl's House and whose list of credits includes Hall & Oates, Barbra Streisand , and B.B. King, was quick to offer praise: "Adrenalize brings a high energy, professional and totally fun show that people really love. The audience sang along all night to all their favorite Def Leppard hits."

This summer, Adrenalize will bring the swaggering, electrifying stage personae of the Lads from Sheffield to outdoor stages in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York, along with a multitude of indoor venues throughout the U.S.

Def Leppard recently re-released their album Pyromania as a deluxe edition for superfans. The band’s third full-length was made available in April in a number of variations, including those that came with multiple CDs, vinyl records, Blu-ray discs, and more.

Longtime lovers of Def Leppard were quick to support the album’s fortieth anniversary release. They purchased the title in huge numbers, and all that love has sent it back to a number of Billboard charts. The set reappears on a number of lists this week, and it even manages to debut on one it’s never landed on before.

Pyromania sold 5,720 copies in America throughout the past tracking period, according to Luminate. That’s a 684% increase from the week before, when it sold just 729 copies.

All those purchases help Pyromania return to the Top Album Sales chart at No. 17. That’s a new best showing on that tally for the title, which has now spent a lucky 13 frames somewhere on the ranking of the bestselling full-lengths and EPs in the U.S.

Pyromania is also back on the Billboard 200, though it doesn’t come close to its previously-set peak on that tally. The set re-enters the competitive roster at No. 173–a far cry from its No. 2 high point. Looking at total units, and not just sales, Def Leppard’s project moved 8,499 equivalent copies in America–though more than half of those were pure purchases.

The newly-expanded Pyromania debuts on the Vinyl Albums chart, thanks to its new deluxe edition. On that format-specific ranking, Def Leppard’s ‘80s classic starts at No. 16. It’s the band’s fifth appearance on the roster, and Pyromania is now tied as their third-highest-charting project ever.

Of course, Pyromania can also be found on two of Billboard’s rock-only lists. It returns on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart at No. 43 in just its second frame ever. Over on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart, the title narrowly misses out on finding its way into the top 10, as it settles at No. 11.
