G Adventures partnered with hostel booking service Hostelworld in 2021 to launch its Roamies itineraries. Its combination of backpacking and organized travel itineraries includes countries like Albania, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Vietnam. The trips are marketed to 18- to 35-year-olds, though like-minded individuals keen on budget travel and communal environments may enjoy these trips, too.

Best for True Solo Travel : Black Tomato

Black Tomato specializes in bespoke luxury travel experiences. For those interested in traversing around the world solo and willing to pay a premium for tailored itineraries, its adventurous or culturally immersive experiences may just be your ticket.

Your travels might look like hiking and biking in Patagonia, embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage through Bhutan and India, chasing glaciers and geysers in Iceland, or learning to cook Georgia and Armenia’s local dishes or Japan’s regional cuisine.

In 2017, Black Tomato launched its Get Lost adventure travel experience. With the support of a dedicated team, and without prior knowledge of where they're headed, Get Lost participants will find their way home from an undisclosed location. The location is selected based on a pre-travel questionnaire about which environment clients would like to immerse themselves in. Then, they show up at the airport and the adventure begins.

Best for Ages 25-39 : For The Love of Travel

With 80 percent of individuals traveling with For The Love of Travel jet -setting solo, each trip is packed with opportunities to meet fellow Millennial and Gen Z travel enthusiasts. For example, within your small “crew” of up to 14 people, make new friends doing snow sports and unwinding in saunas in Lapland or devouring tacos and sipping mezcal in Mexico City. Trips range from four to nine days, including weekends in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain wilderness or an extended weekend in Costa Rica where you’ll hike through rainforests, relax in hammocks, and hike, bike, or surf.

According to company feedback, the average FTLOT traveler is 30 years old and interested in meeting new people while traveling . The company bills itself as a mid-range travel company, where “​​we might stay in a more basic hotel for a couple of nights so we can include a Michelin-worthy meal and a private catamaran ride.” 

In 2022, FTLOT plans to offer at least 10 new itineraries including to Belize, Turkey, and Spain’s Basque Country. And for those with the flexibility, the company launched Sojrn in 2021 featuring month-long, themed stays in destinations like Cape Town—focused on biodiversity—and a fashion-oriented stay in Paris.

FTLOT requires an initial deposit and allows installment payments if not paid in full.

Best for 50+ : Overseas Adventure Travel Rates

Overseas Adventure Travel is primarily aimed at American travelers aged 50 and over. It offers guided itineraries to worldwide destinations, including Africa, Antarctica, Asia, and the South Pacific, with trips ranked by activity level and accompanied by a list of physical requirements to help select an itinerary that is best suited for you. For example, their Japan and South Korea itinerary advise that participants be able to carry their own luggage as the selected hotels do not have porter service.

Some of Overseas Adventure Travel’s most popular trips include 17 days of wending the Adriatic from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina (think a walking tour in Dubrovnik, sampling traditional Bosnian food in Sarajevo, and exploring the countryside near Zagreb). On another popular trip, you spend 15 days traveling through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, ending in Helsinki, Finland. All trips offer pre-and post-itinerary extensions, and either waive the single supplement entirely or offer a discount on a private room.

The company offers a free Roommate Matching Program which helps you find a like-minded, same-sex roommate. If they can’t find a match, your single supplement is deducted. Small group sizes typically average 13 travelers.

Overseas Adventure Travel won the Solo Travel Award for Best Tour in 2017 and 2018, thanks in large part to its policy of offering a limited number of single spaces for each itinerary.

Best Female : Wild Women Expeditions

It began as an all-women, Canada-based canoe tripping company in 1991, and Wild Women Expeditions is perfect for boundary-pushing women who want to travel independently and enjoy the safety and support of an organized tour. The company also prioritizes hiring female tour leaders and on-the-ground guides. It offers outdoor adventures for women of all ages and identities and with a range of physical abilities (“whether your greatest skill is tracking a storm or talking up a storm, summiting mountains or summoning courage, keeping your kayak in line or coloring outside the lines,” as the company describes).

The company travels to 31 destinations around the world like Egypt, Tanzania, and the Azores islands. Itineraries are typically adventure-based and are filtered on their website by activity, with options ranging from sailing to cycling and horse riding. Imagine yourself sea kayaking and snorkeling in the Galapagos or scaling glaciers in Alaska. 

Most guests are solo travelers and there’s no single supplement to worry about as accommodation is typically in a shared room or cabin. Though if privacy is a priority, you can usually snag your own room for a nominal extra fee. Group sizes are kept small and social with between six and 14 women, depending on the itinerary you choose. The average group size is eight. 

Wild Women Expeditions also takes care to curate trips that avoid or minimize the disturbance of wildlife; supports environmental education and advocacy projects; and partners with social justice and women’s rights organizations.

Best for Solo Parent Travel : Intrepid Travel

Intrepid ’s family-themed holidays welcome adults traveling with children, including solo parents looking to travel with their kids without the stress of planning and coordinating a trip. Since each family’s travel needs and preferences are different, every itinerary includes an “essential trip information” section where Intrepid outlines whether the trip would be a good fit for you and your kids, as well as a physical rating from least to more strenuous activities. 

For example, an itinerary through part of the Amazon Jungle in Peru advises the jungle can be very hot and humid, and that the weather can be unpredictable in the Andes. On the other hand, an 11-day trip to Borneo island in Southeast Asia lists a minimum age of 5 and outlines a range of accommodations from hotels to guesthouses and jungle camps; on a few occasions, travel times between destinations range between four to five hours. Trips to Costa Rica, Tanzania, China, and Morocco are also listed.

Individuals under 17 years typically receive a 10 percent discount, and the company requires that adults have at least one child under 18 years traveling with them. Stuffy coaches, flag-touting tour guides and ‘seeing the sights’ isn’t our vibe. We prefer culturally-rich experiences – led by a local – that take you behind the scenes of a destination. Our itineraries are packed with unique insights into local life. We're talking hands-on pastry-making classes with local Macedonian women, watching a traditional dance performance on the sand dunes in Pushkar or sleeping in a lush eco-resort in the Amazon.

We’ve found that it’s not always about the places you go but the people you meet along the way. Our trips are designed for people of all ages and with all sorts of life stories. With an average group size of 10, you'll get to know each other beyond the pleasantries over long dinner conversations and shared experiences. With a little luck, the friendships you make on your trip may last long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase at home.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers. 

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over. 

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website. 

I’m traveling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport. 

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you. 

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you. 

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you. 

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information. 

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you. 

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

European Delight

Overall I, and my companions, enjoyed the trip however there were some significant elements which we were not happy with. On the TWO itineraries we received for Rome the following was noted: "08.30hrs- In the morning, we have a scenic tour of the city, which will be a great introduction to “The Eternal city”. We enter the tinystate of the Vatican. The Vatican City is a principal centre of Christianity in the world. You will be able to visit St. Peter’s Basilica. And wehave also included admission to the Roman Coliseum, the principal symbol of Rome.’ Day 2: Rome TODAY’S HIGHLIGHTS: City tour of Rome. Roman Coliseum (admission price included). It’s clear from the above two notes that we would visit the Coliseum – admission included! Yet, we did NOT visit the Colosseum but walked through the less interesting and impressive Forum. We were very disappointed as the Colosseum was one of the sites we were looking forward to visiting. We were not aware of Europamundo's 'circuit' format which required we frequently changed coaches, drivers and tour directors. This was somewhat disconcerting as we were required to remember which bus we were on and who our director was at a time when we were on holidays and looking for something of a stress free vacation. Most of the tour directors were excellent, though we found the second director, who travelled with us from Innsbruk to Prague, was at times brusque and seemed to prioritise Spanish-speaking travellers when they joined us. We were disappointed that most of the options were not raised with us - except the option to Moulin Rouge because tickets had not been pre-booked. Similarly, we waited hours to access the Eiffel Tower because tickets had not been pre-purchased despite the fact that it was part of the trip rather than an option. We had pre-paid for a canal trip in Amsterdam, however it wasn't mentioned by the director and so we missed out on that. We were reimbursed. Though we enjoyed the trip and cities we visited, for the reasons above I wouldn’t choose Europamundo for future vacations,.

The Best of Eastern Europe

Very well planned and organized. CEO was round-the-clock attentive to the trip and each individual. Lodgings were excellent and well selected geographically. My only criticism would be that the name of the tour should be Central and not Eastern Europe. Would definitely recommend Gadventures to fellow travelers.

Best of Central Europe

To be honest, part of what made the trip fantastic was our group of 12- could not have had a better group to travel with- which is clearly luck, but a piece of our group being so cohesive was Nejca, our guide. She was perfect! Available but not pushy. Laid back, but willing to assert herself to make our experience the best. She made each person in the group feel special and appreciated. Thank you, Nejca! The itinerary was quite good as well. Although there were places I could have stayed for a day longer, I think it’s important to not stay too long and feel like time is wasted on a certain place on the tour. Transportation was efficient and Nejca did a great job getting us to our destinations easily and without rushing. Accommodations were very good- with the exception of Prague. Although our apartment was nice, it was clear that the residents of Prague feel that their space is being taken over by tourists- which is clearly true. I would have preferred to have stayed in a hotel in Prague-honestly, I would have paid more for it. Other than that, cannot day enough good things about the trip! Thank you!!

The Great Adventure

Eva and Rene were amazing tour guides. Disappointed that we didn't see the Eiffel Tower at night. Several times we were dropped in town at night with not enough time to get a meal before being taken to the hotel. Some hotels were out of town with nothing within walking distance. Thank you to Rene for arranging for a group of us to go to the Moulin Rouge.

Good route which covered the main attractions of Mid Europe. The trip is compact and efficient and the optional excursions add on the contents. Tour leader Matt is full of knowledge about various area’s history and events, he also looked after the team well and tried to accomodate customers’ needs, A really caring and professional tour leader. Pascal is not only a brilliant driver who tried to park the coach as close as possible for group’s access, he was also taking care of the team in many ways and his warm greetings and kind words won our hearts. If you haven’t or only seen a couple of European countries, this trip will be the one to open your eyes or the one to expend your European experiences. This trip exceeded my expectations. It was a great way to see many places in Europe within a short time and to give a taste of those places. After after visited, I would like to explore these destinations further. Our guide again was fantastic!

Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik or Split: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days

This tour exceeded our expectations. The history of these countries is very interesting. The cities and towns we visited were fascinating. The scenery of mountains, lakes and coast was beautiful. We saw wonderful churches, mosques, monasteries, bazaars, castles, forts and walled cities. Our guide Sokol was great fun to be with. Before booking this trip, we had lots of questions, which were answered by Sirma from the CHOOSE BALKANS team promptly and with the information we had requested. As tourism is increasing in these countries, visiting at this point in time was magical. The use of local hotels was nice. This was a special trip that we highly recommend, and will stay in our minds for a long time.

Croatia and the Balkans

A really interesting trip; beautiful countries with interesting histories. Sarajevo a highlight for most as so surprisingly attractive and enjoyable. Several good tours and activities included. Nice range of fellow travellers from 30-80 including couples and singles.

What people love about Europe Solo Tours

It was a great cruise. The food was amazing, the crew was really helpful, and the tours and tour guides were great. The only thing to imporve on if the WiFi which only worked half the time.

So honestly when we were assigned to this company through Tour Radar and looked at the reviews we were a little worried. I tried to hope for the best and assume that people who DO NOT have great experiences write more reviews. I was absolutely correct. We had AMAZING tour guides. Knowledgeable, kind, helpful. I think this company does an amazing job of moving people from one destination to another especially when it seems that itineraries overlap offering everyone the trip they desire. The hotels far outweighed our expectations. Of course there were small hiccups with time losses and changes in plans for the day but for the price and to get a brief view of Europe I would call it an outstanding tour.

Very good tour , something’s we didn’t find out right until the moment. But, overall good tour.

Start your tour of the city in the taproom of New Belgium Brewing (the company behind Fat Tire) and follow it with a pint at a few lesser-known breweries — we recommend Zwei Brewing Co. , Maxline Brewing , and Black Bottle Brewery . By the end of the day, you'll have your own beer-loving posse to explore the city with. Solo travelers will love the atmosphere of the downtown area, which is so charming it was the inspiration for Walt Disney when designing Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland.

Austin, Texas

The quickest way to bond with a stranger? Shared musical taste. Austin has plenty of opportunities to bump into fellow music lovers. Stay on or near South Congress Avenue, where trendy properties like the Hotel Magdalena provide the ideal base for visiting the street's iconic venues. Other ‘hoods you can easily get to include East Austin, booming with hipster bars and food trucks; South Lamar with its great shops; and Rainey Street, beloved among college students. Visit March through November to see the bats flying under the Ann W. Richards bridge — it's one of the best things to do in Austin , as is indulging in the city's incredible food.

Islamorada, Florida

Of all the towns in the Florida Keys , Islamorada has the homiest feel. Locals are happy to regale you with tales of family squabbles and fishing exploits at any of the seaside watering holes. For an elevated dining experience, snag a barstool at Chef Michael’s and order the whole lionfish. It's a big but manageable dish, made from an invasive species that Floridians pride themselves on removing from local waters and serving as a tasty dinner instead. When you're done, rest your head at one of the cozy cottages at Moorings Village.

Louisville, Kentucky

Kentucky is known for its hospitality and Louisville for its bourbon , meaning solo travelers can find good friends and good drinks while exploring this Southern city. NuLu is the most happening neighborhood, but Old Louisville is the place to hunker down if you’re a sucker for history and architecture. Solo travel is not a new concept — gap-year students and sabbatical-taking professionals spring to mind — but recent events have catapulted the individual journey, especially in the luxury sector, to new heights.

Following the onset of Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdowns, it made sense that an emerging trend of group travel came about once travel restrictions were lifted; multigenerational families and friend groups making up for lost time with a vacation together.

But, in the last 12 months, luxury solo travel has boomed — in 2022, Google Trends data indicated that solo travel searches had risen by an astronomical 761%.

The luxury travel industry is paying attention, with a whole host of exciting itineraries that are tailored specifically to the lone ranger. A number of cruise companies have also ditched the solo traveler fee, and even some yacht charters are available by the cabin with no additional fee if you travel alone.

Perhaps this trend was spurred by the realization that life really is too short to wait for the perfect time to go on that trip you’ve dreamt about. Or, maybe your travel companion is not keen on the location of your heart’s desire, and so you decide to go it alone instead.

In 1958, Geoffrey Kent, who was a teenager at the time, drove his motorbike from Nairobi to Cape Town . During the journey, he experienced his first-ever hotel stay — and chose one of the grandest hotels in Africa for the occasion. 1. Quebec City

• Auberge du Tresor room rates start at $129 per night. Rates likely go down in winter.

The Carnaval de Quebec is a good alternative to New Orleans' Mardi Gras, and at Christmas, the medieval choristers sing carols through the Old City, according to Elizabeth Avery, founder of the site SoloTrekker4U.com . Quebec City offers skiing, dog sledding and skating in the winter, and an abundance of unique shopping and sights all year round.

2. Loire Valley, France

• Clos d'Amboise room rates start at $211 per night.

There are many castles to see in the Loire Valley, including the Azay-le-Rideau, Blois, Chinon, Chenonceau and Amboise. Visit them to see the beautiful architecture and to take in the vibrant history of France's Golden Age, according to Avery. When not exploring castles, cruise the Loire River, rent a bike or go for a hike to enjoy the beauty of the valley.

3. Siena, Italy

• Tuscan country lodging at L'Aia Country Holidays starts at $133 per night.

Siena, Italy's central piazza might just be one of Europe's finest medieval squares, according to the Telegraph. When not taking in the museums and ancient architecture, Avery suggested enjoying the Tuscan countryside by hiking, biking, horseback riding or playing a few rounds of golf at a nearby course. With just 11 rooms, L'Aia Country Holidays country house offers solo travelers ample opportunities to get to know others staying there.

4. Corfu, Greece

• The Siorra Vittoria boutique hotel room rates start at $248 per night.

Corfu is more than just a beach destination. There are plenty of activities both indoors and out, Avery said. The island offers museums, ancient ruins, Byzantine and classic architecture, in addition to wind surfing, sailing and other outdoor activities. You can also see castles, fortresses and the Old Town and central square, among other attractions, according to SoloTrekker4U.

5. Placencia Village, Belize

• The Laru Beya Resort offers rooms starting at $167 per night.

Placencia Village, located on a peninsula, has some of the best beaches in Belize. That also makes it a popular tourist destination, according to SoloTrekker4U. The destination is great for solo travelers because there are many budget-friendly eateries.

Visitors can go snorkeling, diving, sailing or fishing. They can also explore Mayan ruins and visit Laughing Bird Caye National Park, which offers an abundance of wildlife.

6. San Juan, Puerto Rico

• The Mar del Norte offers rooms starting at $122 per night. 

In San Juan, local attractions include the governor's residence and historic fort, La Fortaleza, as well as the Cristo Chapel and the San Juan Bautista Cathedral. Travelers can also bargain at the local markets, or rent a car to travel to the El Yunque National Forest and observe wildlife. If you want to spend a day at the beach, Avery recommended avoiding the Friday afternoon crowds.

7. Trinidad and Tobago

• Travel packages offered by Travelocity include seven hotel nights and airfare from New York City, starting at around $700 per person.

Trinidad and Tobago offer two islands with their own distinctive attractions. "The island of Trinidad is home to the country's capital, Port of Spain, [which] offers visitors shopping, culture, trendy restaurants, tasty street food, architecture and history," said Warren Solomon, general manager of marketing at the nation's tourism agency . "Only a 20-minute plane ride from Trinidad is sister-island Tobago ... home to beautiful beaches, the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere, stylish villas and resorts, and unique local culture and cuisine."

• Buddha Zen Hotel Chengdu offers rooms starting at $122 per night. 

Chengdu, China is home to several panda conservation centers, such as the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. These centers provide an opportunity to see adorable pandas up close and learn about conservation efforts. Visiting these centers is not only affordable at about $8 for a visit but also supports panda conservation.

Bianca Hodge of QueenB Travels has lived in China for five years and shares that, having visited 17 of the 24 provinces, she can confidently say that China is an incredible experience for the solo female traveler. "It is cheap, convenient, futuristic, and most of all, safe," she says.

Hodge emphasizes how inexpensive things are. "Unless you actively try to splurge here, nothing is really going to break the bank. Didi, or China's version of Uber, is quite cheap with a 30 minute ride usually running you about $4-5. Public transit is much cheaper -- a ride on the metro will usually run 0.57 cents!"

• Prices for a five-night Royal Caribbean cruise leaving from Cape Liberty, N.J., start at $410.

Coach tours like the Yolo offerings aren't for everyone, said Epperly. "For older travelers, who might enjoy relaxing a bit more than a coach tour would allow, many of the major cruise lines will waive single supplements for solo guests on select sailings," she said.

For example, Royal Caribbean offers super studio ocean-view staterooms with balconies that don't require a single supplement on two of its ships, which travel to a variety of destinations, including Bermuda.

10. Washington, D.C

• Rooms at the The Normandy Hotel start at $143 per night; Woodley Park Guest House offers some single-occupancy rooms with shared baths starting at $200 per night.

Visit monuments and memorials, not to mention the 19 Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo. The capital city's robust Metro system also means it's easy to get around on the cheap, making D.C. one of the country's coolest solo trips for women -- or anyone else. The Embassy Circle and the Woodley Park are also currently offering a half-price Sunday night special.

11. Bucks County, Pa

• The Golden Plough Inn's Family Fun package offers room rates starting at $189 per night, admission to Giggleberry Fair, plus a $20 voucher for any of the property's four restaurants.

Bucks County offers a respite from urban life for city residents, or a second destination for solo travelers visiting New York City or Philadelphia.

"Bike tour with Bear Bicycle Touring Co., kayak down the Delaware River, explore and shop in downtown New Hope, see a play at the Bucks County Playhouse [or] sip and savor along the Bucks County Wine Trail," suggested Alexa J.

12. Minneapolis

• Summer room rates at the W Minneapolis -- The Foshay and Le Méridien Chambers Minneapolis start at $206 per night.

Minneapolis offers plenty of culture, while also being one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. If you're up for a ride but don't want to go solo, consider staying at either the W Minneapolis--The Foshay or the Le Méridien Chambers Minneapolis.

"Both properties are walking distance from art galleries, museums, bars and other local attractions," said Sydney Feldman, a hotel spokesperson. "Throughout summer, the properties' general manager leads weekly cycling tours around picturesque Lake Calhoun."

13. Mystic, Conn

• Room rates at the riverfront Steamboat Inn start at $300 per night.

Connecticut offers a variety of activities within easy driving distance of each other, and it's close to big-city hubs like New York and Boston.

"Getaways are not only affordable but also highly varied -- from active and relaxing opportunities to historical and cultural experiences," said Emily Pangakis, spokesperson for the Connecticut Office of Tourism .

Active tourists might consider sailing, kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding classes at New England Science & Sailing in nearby Stonington.

14. New Hampshire

• Rooms at the Coppertoppe Inn and Retreat Center in Hebron start at $225 per night in August.

Depending on where you visit in New Hampshire, the state offers everything from NASCAR racing to quilting and knitting shops, said Sheila Oranch, innkeeper at the Coppertoppe Inn and Retreat Center . 

"As a woman who has traveled solo many times, I sincerely recommend taking a B&B tour of New Hampshire," she said. "Hosts know their areas well and can suggest interesting activities and sights, scenic drives and quiet beaches or hikes. Because owners live on-site, B&Bs are safer for solo travelers, and usually quieter."

15. Mineola, Texas Retreat

• Retreat in the Pines prices start at $599 for an all-inclusive weekend.

Wellness retreats offering yoga, massages, cooking classes and more can be expensive, especially when they're set near big cities. However, retreats that are far off the beaten path are often more serene -- and affordable.

"Our retreats are for women only, and usually at least half of the attendees are solo travelers," said Theresa Polley, founder of Retreat in the Pines , in Mineola, near Tyler, Texas. "Many of our solo travels stay connected with each other, and even come back to the retreat together."

16. Australia's Blue Mountains

• Rooms at the Fairmont Resort Blue Mountains start at $1225 per night in August.

Jim Campbell, the CEO and Founder of Honeymoon Goals , recommends the Blue Mountains are one of Australia's most beautiful natural landscapes -- and one you can visit on a budget. "The area is known for its vibrant colors and rolling hills, which make it an ideal place to go if you want to get away from it all. Plus, you can book a tour that takes you into the mountains themselves so that you can really explore their beauty up close!"

• Friendly Planet offers a five-day trip with double-occupancy pricing starting at $1,999. The single-occupancy upcharge starts at $249.

Travel opportunities to Cuba are opening up and some tour and cruise operators are offering affordably-priced options with activities that offer an overview of the once off-limits island. The Friendly Planet trip flies to and from either Miami or Fort Lauderdale.

The trip offers cultural and culinary highlights, including a Cuban cooking class. The cruise features dedicated guides and escorts at every stop, which some solo female travelers might view as a big plus.

18. Lima, Peru

• Nightly room rates at the Hilton Lima Miraflores start at $253 in August.

If you opt for a tour, it pays to look for package deals. For example, travelers who stay at the Hilton Lima Miraflores, and book a room and tour directly through the Hilton website get 20 percent off any Lima city tour offered by Turibus. Depending on which tour you choose, you could see sights including the Huaca Pucllana, a ceremonial and archaeological site built in the fourth century, B.C., or Lima's Magical Water Circuit.

19. Kilkenny, Ireland

• Contiki Vacations offers an eight-day trip to Ireland with prices starting at $1,883.

On a recent vacation of her own, Johnson, the Bucks County spokesperson, took a trip to Ireland, which she booked through Contiki.

"My favorite sight in Ireland was probably the Blarney Castle," she said. "The view from the top is stunning Irish countryside, and kissing the stone is an age-old tradition you have to take part in. I also really liked the town of Kilkenny. I did a bike tour through it, and it is very scenic and charming."

Explore Bali's ancient shrines and temples, or visit the Elephant Safari Park to ride a beast or watch an elephant paint works of art. Although less expensive accommodations are available, this destination is affordable enough for some solo travelers to justify splurging.

22. Dilijan, Armenia

• The rate for a medium room at the Old Dilijan Complex's Ananov Guest House starts at around $60 per night.

Dilijan is a small resort town in northeastern Armenia that's popular with backpackers, eco-tourists, history buffs, foodies, art enthusiasts and more, said Jackie Abramian, a media strategist and travel writer who has written a nonfiction book on Armenia.

"For outdoor enthusiasts, Dilijan is hugged by lush natural forests of preserved national park, and crisp, alpine mountain air ideal for trekking and hiking," she said.

24. Danube River

25. Malawi, Africa

• Visitors to Liwonde Safari Camp in Liwonde National Park can pitch a tent for $10 per night, or stay solo in one of the camp's luxury tents for $40.

Malawi offers friendly locals and natural attractions, including Lake Malawi, Mount Mulanje and Liwonde National Park, home to abundant wildlife, including more than 400 different kinds of birds.

"I know some women might worry about visiting Africa, but after visiting 13 different African countries -- and now living in Ethiopia -- I couldn't suggest a better destination for female travelers," said Valerie Bowden, founder of the website Backpacking Africa for Beginners .

26. Leon, Nicaragua

• Nightly rates at the four-star Hotel El Convento start at $131.

Megan Stetzel, founder of the travel blog Forks & Footprints , recommended volcano boarding, which entails sliding down Nicaragua's Cerro Negro volcano on a specially designed board. The country "is also home to some incredible volcano hikes, perfect beaches for surfing or just sunbathing," she said. 

"Nicaragua is one of the most affordable countries for travel in Latin America," adds Becca Siegel of Half Half Travel . "Staying in a hostel is a fun way for solo female travelers to meet other solo travelers as well. Hostels come at a big bargain price point in Nicaragua, so visitors can save money and splurge on things like excursions."

27. Morocco

• Explore Worldwide's Grand Tour 20-day tour starts at $2,100, with the single room option starting at $440.

Morocco offers everything from mountains to deserts to coastal climes. Visitors to the country can see the sights of Rabat, Meknes, Fes and Marrakech. The package also includes a visit to thermal pools, two nights in a country hotel and breakfast.

When in Reykjavik, the Blue Lagoon spa offers saunas, steam baths, silica mask treatments and a man-made waterfall, among other amenities. Standard admission into the Blue Lagoon starts at 40 euros if you book in advance online.

29. Munich, Germany

• Room rates at Motel One start at around $85 per night.

The dollar is standing at one of its strongest points compared with the euro, making travel to Germany and other euro-zone countries more affordable than in years past. If you opt for Munich, Travel and Leisure recommended bellying up at the local biergarten for a pint, or scouting the aisles of the Christmas markets for a hot mulled wine stand.

30. Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

• Nightly rates at the Tzampoc Resort  start at $165 -- including a free breakfast.

Travelling with a Travel Companion on Train no.2 - worth it?

I have been travelling solo for a number of years now and I was pretty comfortable doing so.

However, of late, I have veered around to the view that if your travel companion is OK, the holiday could turn out to be lot cheaper but also full of fun having some body to share your thoughts.

As I am planning a long train journey on Train No. 2 from Vladivostok to Moscow on the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia, I am coming to the view that travelling with a Travel Buddy , Possibly from my own country, could not only cost lot less but also help overcoming the monotony of the almost week long train travel in a foreign country where language is a major problem.

Am I right ?

You may be right for you.

That doesn't make it universally right for everyone else.

Not everyone is suited for solo travel (even if they can do it) and those people should try to find travel companions.

Those who prefer solo travel and can make it work will continue to travel solo.

For me, a long train journey with people from all over the world would be an interesting challenge and a potential delight. Going with a travel buddy, for me, would dilute the adventure but obviously the balance falls differently for the OP.

I got remarried, and I'm raising 3 boys in a blended family. Kid-free travel helps us bond as a couple.

Last Christmas, my youngest son got me a "Wonder Mom" coffee mug from his school's holiday fair. It's red and blue with yellow stars and makes me smile whenever I see it in the cupboard. While I appreciate the sweet gesture, the gift didn't come with any superpowers. If it did, they would come in handy on school days. Allow me to explain.

My husband and I are raising a blended family with three boys — 8, 13, and 15 — who each go to a different school with slightly different start times. We have one car, so ensuring they arrive before the last bell rings requires Swiss time-keeping precision.

To beat the clock, I get up at 6:30 a.m. and head downstairs to cook breakfast for the five of us while my husband takes care of waking up the kids. Most mornings, I make a few variations of breakfast because we have a mix of picky eaters and food allergies to accommodate, and I want to make sure they have something healthy-ish in their stomachs before leaving. There are medications and vitamins to remember, school IDs and water bottles to pack, and the dog needs to be fed, too.

Once the boys are off, my husband leaves for work, and I get started on my to-dos from the home office. After school, there are pickups, extracurricular activities, dinner, and bedtimes to juggle. My husband and I finally take off for the night around 9:30 p.m., assuming there isn't any last-minute laundry to do.

Parental burnout is on the rise

We aren't the only ones with a schedule like this — to say nothing of dealing with work, financial and other pressures — which is why it makes sense that parental burnout is so high .

A 2023 study by the American Psychological Association found that parents of children under 18 reported a significant increase in stress levels compared to pre-pandemic times. To be exact, 33% of parents now rate their stress between 8 and 10 on a 10-point scale, a 9% increase since 2019.

The APA also looked at the impact of parental burnout and recommended various strategies to "enhance resilience in parenting" such as going on vacations without the children or simply taking "microbreaks" throughout the day. This can be as simple as listening to a guided meditation in the car after running an errand.

While the microbreaks idea was a new one that I might try, my husband and I were already well-acquainted with the relationship-strengthening remedy of getting away sans kids. It makes me a better mom, too. Here's what I mean.

A balance of family vacations and solo getaways

Since my husband and I blended our households last year, we've been intentional about doing activities and outings with all three of the boys to create family memories and build some lifelong bonds.

So far, we've gone on some fun ones, including a long weekend in Colorado Springs for our wedding with the boys last summer. This fall, we're looking forward to a Caribbean cruise for a nephew's wedding.

However, between orchestrating the travel logistics to refereeing flare-ups along the way, it can feel like we need a vacation from our family vacation when we get home.

Then, there are the realities of reentry: unpacking everything you packed before, washing the dirty clothes, putting away the laundry and luggage, and catching up on all the other stuff you missed while you were away. For us, multiply that by five.

Getting away as a couple ? It's a comparative breeze. Even just staying for a Friday or Saturday night in nearby Denver allows us to reconnect and recharge, making us better able to handle the ups and downs of modern-day parenting.

We weren't together, pre-kids

My husband and I were never a couple before having kids; we were with other partners. Now, because we share custody with our exes , there are times we are without all three of our sons. Missing them can be tough, but we cherish the opportunities we have to be as "cringe-y" as we want — a term used by our youngest regarding too much PDA — and have some non-parental fun.

Spring break this year was a blast, for example. We spent half the time soaking up the Florida sunshine, seeing family and friends in our shared hometown. Then, we hopped over to New Orleans to enjoy the French Quarter revelries and basically eat our way around town — minus any dietary restrictions from the kids.

Last fall was another adventure, hitting the streets of my old stomping grounds in New York City for five days. Stay up late, wake up late, rinse, and repeat. They don't call it the city that never sleeps for nothing.

Sure, there are heart-twinging moments when we think about the boys — what they might enjoy or find overwhelming about where we're visiting — but we wouldn't trade our kid-free trips for anything.

We learn about ourselves

One of my favorite things about travel, in general, is coming back a whole new person. Getting out of your comfort zone can transform the way you think or see the world. I have experienced this phenomenon in varying degrees at different times in my life, from the summer in high school when I stayed with a friend's family in France to the seven years my son and I lived in Singapore and had the chance to travel around Southeast Asia .

There are so many places my husband and I want to visit together, and we're eager to cross them off our now-shared bucket list.

Speaking of the list, we realize we probably have fewer years ahead of us than behind us, and we aren't waiting for retirement to enjoy the here and now. It's also wonderful to know I can explore the world with my favorite person at my side, holding my hand.

Traveling without our kids is not about abandoning ship, it's about refilling our cups. Child-free vacations might not be an option for everyone, but even a staycation can do wonders.
