Marshall Dodge’s classic humor recordings of “Bert & I” created a soundtrack to Maine lobstermen that is as accurate – and funny – today, as it was 60 years ago. If you’ve ever listened to “The Bluebird” and imagined yourself at the helm of a lobster boat, then it’s time to come to Maine. Lobster boat tours are a unique way to experience lobstering first-hand and learn how lobster fishermen preserve this vital industry.

A Family-friendly Excursion

Guests can pull up traps, and learn how lobstermen decide whether a lobster is good for dinner or needs to enjoy more time at the bottom of the sea. Kids delight in all the other creatures pulled from traps, too, like starfish and crabs.

You can often buy your catch and cook the freshest lobster imaginable or have a restaurant prepare it for you.

Tours go past lighthouses and other landmarks and the ocean’s mammals, like porpoises, seals and whales, can be seen.

You can have a lobster tour on a sail boat, traditional Downeast lobster boat or even ships with see-through floors!

Guide to the Best Lobster Boat Tours in Maine

A fun way to get out on the water is on a Maine Lobster Boat and/or Scenic Boat Tour. Departing from seaside villages and harbors are hourly or half day tours aboard authentic Maine lobster boats. Your Captain will take you on a narrated boat ride, show you lobster pots and even haul in a lobster trap for the day’s catch. This will whet your appetite for a  lobster dinner that evening .

You will also see the dramatic Maine coastline as part of your cruise. The Lobster boat tours from Kennebunkport cruise around Walkers Point, the so-called summer White House of former President Bush.

Lighthouse boat tours are another fun affordable adventure. The best way to see many of Maine’ s lighthouses is by water, the way sailors do. Your lighthouse tour guide will provide you seafaring legends and lore about  Maine’s historic lighthouses . Boat tours out of Portland bring visitors into Casco Bay, around Bug Light and Portland Headlight – Maine’ s first and foremost lighthouse.

An evening lighthouse cruise is spectacular as the sun sets on the Maine shore. Many charters let you byob so you can enjoy a cocktail cruise and sunset – Maine magic.

Lobster boat tours and Lighthouse tours during the day are more afforadable than a full day schooner sail for example, and typically take an hour or two so they are family friendly – kids will enjoy the boat ride and the chance to see a fisherman catch a real live  Maine lobster .

maine lobster boats

Everyone will appreciate the scenery of the beautiful Maine coastline from the deck of the tour boat. You will find daily and even hourly lobster boat tours and lighthouse boat tours in season in the Maine harbor towns of Kennebunkport, Portland, Boothbay Harbor, Camden, Rockland, and Bar Harbor.

Dress accordingly for your boat ride, sneakers or boat shoes, and a jacket or windbreaker as it is often much cooler on the water off shore. Warning, you may be craving a fresh Maine lobster after your boat ride, but that is an easily solved dilemma at any of Maine’s seafood restaurants.

The VisitMaine.Net team is the small team of authors and editors that research and write our in-depth guides throughout the site and update past articles to make sure they're still super valuable to you. We have one goal: to help you fall more in love with the state of Maine!

Maine Lobstering Tours

Come join us for an unforgettable excursion on the waters of Casco Bay while we guide you through the daily routines of a Maine Lobsterman. Participate in the excitement of hauling up the traps or sit back and relax as we cruise near picturesque lighthouses, historic civil war forts, and the “Seal Rocks”.

Each of our lobster tours lasts for 80-90 minutes and passenger numbers are limited to ensure that everyone gets an up-close and personal Maine lobstering experience.

You’ll see how these tasty treats get from the bottom of the ocean to your dinner plate and learn about lobster habits, conservation efforts and the difference between hard shells, shedders, shorts, culls, and keepers. Any lobsters we catch can be purchased after the cruise for wholesale “boat” price, and if you don’t have a pot at home, take them across the pier to the Portland Lobster Company restaurant for the freshest lobster dinner anywhere.

A diverse variety of marine life will enter a lobster trap, and some common visitors include rock crabs, snails, starfish, and hermit crabs. Our see-thru “live tank” offers a chance to watch these little creatures until the end of the day when all are thrown back into the sea.

In addition to lobstering, the Lucky Catch can provide a wide selection of private charters including birthdays, corporate outings, cocktail cruises, bird watching and island dining transportation. If you have an idea for a custom charter, let us know and we’ll try to make it work for you!

It’s time to pull the lobster gear! On our Maine lobster tours, we head out to check some traps, where everything is as hands-on or hands-off as you would like. You will learn about lobsters, as well as the billion-dollar lobster industry. We don’t always catch just lobster, there is a chance for sand dollars, starfish, crabs, fish, and even a sea horse. You will be allowed to keep up to one legal lobster per person.  If time allows a short scenic cruise will finish the trip off.

*6 person max

Lobster Tours Common Questions

It’s typically about 15 degrees colder on the water. Make sure you bring sunglasses, sunscreen, jacket/sweatshirt and rain gear. Wear waterproof shoes or sandals there is chance your feet may get wet. If you have any sort of medications for allergic reactions please bring those with you, as well as your food and drink.

The maximum number of people allowed on our Maine Lobster Tours is six people and each person gets to bring home a lobster!

Hard alcohol is not allowed on board. Beer and wine for those over 21 years old are allowed but the captain may cancel the trip at any time if he feels someone’s behavior is no longer safe for themselves or other passengers. Illegal drugs are prohibited and will result in immediate cancellation. Cancellations due to drugs or alcohol will not result in any form of a refund.

Every person reacts differently to the ocean. If you have never been on the ocean or if you know you get sea sick make sure to take motion sickness pills like Dramamine or Meclizine before arriving at the dock or as the directions state or they will have no effect. Keep in mind alcohol can make the likelihood to be sea sick much higher.

We are adding more boats to our fleet and with the increased bookings we rolled out a very easy to use online booking system where you can schedule your Maine Lobster Tour in a few clicks. This allows Captain Derek to spend his time providing great lobster tour, fishing charter , sunset cruises , and boat tour experiences.

All our charters are private to one group and our pricing is based on per boat versus per person. This is a lobster tour, educational trip, site-seeing cruise, and fun time on the water for you and your family or friends.

Keep in mind our captains have their USCG Masters Captains license .

All prices are per boat NOT per person and only your group will be on the boat. Clients usually tip the same way as they do in a restaurant. 15-20% is the norm if you feel your captain did what he could to make sure you had a fun time on the water. We do our best to go above and beyond for all clients. All trips require a $100 deposit that will be made upon booking your trip through our online booking system.

All cancellations must be made 7 days before the scheduled trip to receive a refund on deposit. If the cancellation is less than 7 days you will not receive a refund for your deposit and you will also be charged for the full charter if we cannot book the cancelled date.

The captain has the right to cancel a trip at any time for weather or mechanical failure. If the trip is canceled before it leaves the dock the trip will be fully refunded if arrangements for another day cannot be made. With your safety in mind rain and cold are not normal grounds for cancelations of trips. If you choose to cancel a trip for your comfort, you will be charged the full trip rate. If a trip is terminated mid trip it will then be charged as an hourly rental rate.

With that said, rain typically is not a reason to cancel a trip as the fish are already wet so they don’t care if it’s raining! We do sometimes make exceptions however for kid’s trips and sunset cruises. The wind/marine forecast is what matters to us.

The lobster won't be the only big draw for the 77th Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland this summer.

Organizers announced Wednesday that the USS Delbert D. Black (DDG-119) will be visiting during the festival. The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer will anchor in Rockland Harbor and there will be free tours available to the public. Organizers said exact tour dates and times will be announced later.

The ship is named for Master Chief Petty Officer Delbert Black, the first Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON), who died in 2000. MCPON is the Navy’s most senior enlisted rank and Black is known as a trailblazer for his initiatives that improved quality of life for the Navy’s junior ranks, and established the importance and value of having an empowered enlisted force in the Navy.

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle will also be in Rockland for some of the festival. The training vessel will be in Rockland from Aug. 2 to 5.

Known as “America’s Tall Ship,” Eagle is a 295-foot, three-masted barque used as a training vessel for future officers of the United States Coast Guard. It is the largest tall ship flying the Stars and Stripes and the only active square-rigger in U.S. government service

The Maine Lobster Festival is scheduled for July 31 to Aug. 4 in Rockland. About 30,000 people attend the festival each year and they will eat 25,000 pounds of lobster. It takes about 1,300 volunteers to pull off the festival.

WMTW

One of the most popular events of the festival each year is The Big Parade on Main Street. The Big Parade this year starts at 10 a.m. on Aug. 3 and the theme is "Through the Years."

The first festival in 1947, held in Camden, offered all-you-can-eat lobster for $1. The festival lost money and organizers in Camden decided not to bring it back for a second year. That's when the Rockland Junior Chamber of Commerce decided to bring the festival to Rockland. The 1948 festival featured a parade, hot lobster and was expanded from one day to two and held in July.

Funny — you don’t look two years old! This new, ‘olde’ Rockport, Maine, hotel is full of surprises

The Rockport Harbor Hotel was designed to be welcoming for the community — and fit into the look of Rockport Village.

ROCKPORT, Maine — ”I’m amazed at the number of people who walk in and say, ‘How old is this building?’ and I say ‘Two years old.’ They gasp. ‘Not 200?’” says Rockport Harbor Hotel’s general manager Sarah McLean. Apparently, this new “olde” hotel has done a dandy job of blending into the neighborhood.

This site on Rockport’s Central Street, right across from the harbor, once held the Rockport Ice Co. and a dry goods store, and later, a gas station. Following a nor’easter in the 1970s, the building was torn down. Now, that vacant lot/eyesore is home to a stylish, looks-like-it’s-been-here-forever, 20-room hotel.

Looks are deceiving

The bricks on the hotel’s façade came from northern Maine, and were chosen to match the color of the Rockport Public Library, McLean says. The beautiful wood bar in the Oak Room, the hotel’s casual eatery, is more than 100 years old, while the bar in the newly opened Atrium, the fine dining restaurant, was sourced from the old Point Lookout hotel in Northport. The sepia-toned prints on the walls came from the Rockport Historical Society. Oil paintings throughout the hotel, with a style suggesting John Singer Sargent, were done by one of the hotel’s owners, Marianne Smith.

Forget the minimalist hotel style we’ve all been seeing lately, with top sheets gone missing; here, they pile brocade quilts atop beds with oversize headboards. Guest rooms are large, and every room has a gas fireplace, a balcony (some overlook the harbor, others offer views of the Camden Hills), and a coffee closet with a Keurig machine, mini-fridge, and microwave. (Yay to microwaves, from those of us who love warming up our restaurant leftovers for breakfast.) Bathrooms are spa-like, with double sinks and mirrors that offer three settings of lighting. An actual spa will open sometime in the next few months; for now, guests can get in-room massages.

There’s a luxurious old-school vibe in the hotel’s guest rooms, thanks to dark wood and lush bedding. No minimalism here.

Outside the hotel, “There’s an endless amount of outdoor activity here,” McLean says of the Rockport-Camden area. Hiking, biking, kayaking, and boat tours are just some of the options. The hotel has a relationship with Maine Sport Outfitters, so guests can rent bicycles, kayaks, and e-bikes to explore. This will be the hotel’s first summer season; it opened for guests in December of 2023.

This luxury comes at a price, of course. Room rates will range from about $499 to $999 in peak season. (Rates will start at $300 off-season.) The Rockport Harbor Hotel is part of the Bay View Collection; the other hotels in the group are all located in neighboring Camden and include the Lord Camden Inn, the Grand Harbor Inn, and 16 Bay View Hotel.

Lobster with a twist

The culinary side is a major focus here; already, guests come in off the street to the Oak Room for smashburgers and pizza from the brick oven. Open for lunch and dinner, this lobby-bar-restaurant offers outdoor seating, and some indoor tables with harbor views. It’s a low-key vibe, and the fact that there’s a children’s menu tells you all you need to know. The menu also includes some sharable plates and seasonal dishes; everything is made in-house, according to the hotel’s executive chef, Travis Nestor.

Soon, Atrium will be open for breakfast and dinner. On the hotel’s fourth floor, it’s a light-filled space, with a retractable skylight and massive sliding glass doors that overlook Rockport Harbor and Penobscot Bay. “Elevated coastal cuisine” is the theme. An oyster bar hints at Atrium’s seafood-centric soul.

“We want to put out high-quality cuisine that isn’t fussy and overwhelming,” says Chef Travis, originally from Philadelphia but a Maine resident for the past dozen years. It’s a scratch kitchen, and the seafood comes from Maine, mostly the mid-coast. Much of the produce is sourced from local farms as well; eventually, the chef would like to have his own gardens. He’s loving local produce like ramps, fiddleheads, and radishes — ”Every year I find something new to play with,” the chef says.

Chef Travis Nestor brings a lot of intention to classic Maine ingredients, like lobster and blueberries. He doesn’t plan to play it safe in the kitchen at the Rockport Harbor Hotel.

Of course, lobster will be on the menu, but Nestor will give it a surprising tweak. Like … maybe … lobster poached in tonka bean extract? (Serving actual tonka bean is illegal in the United States because large quantities have been linked to health problems, but the diluted extract is OK to use, and lends a nutty, vanilla-like essence.) “People wouldn’t expect it, but as an aromatic, it works brilliantly with the natural flavor and texture of lobster,” Nestor says. (Don’t be surprised if people still ask for melted butter, chef!)

Another Maine standby, blueberries, will come through in a variety of ways, in desserts, salads, and other dishes, he says. Think blueberry cardamom gelato with saffron anglaise. The best way to experience the chef’s whimsy is to book a table for his three-course tasting dinner, held before regular dinner service and featuring drink pairings and a visit with the chef and wine vendors.

Every menu item has been designed to be adjusted on the fly, he says, to address dietary restrictions and preferences. Whether you order a pizza in the Oak Room, or a lobster-something in Atrium, “I want to leave people speechless,” the chef says. “When no one is talking in the dining room, that’s a good sign. You know the food is good!”

Pro tip: If you’re a doughnut lover, plan your trip for June 7-8 for the Rockport Donut Festival; https://rockportmaine.gov . Apparently, the doughnut hole was created here by one Captain Hanson Crockett Gregory, lending street cred to the doughnut scene.

Rockport Harbor Hotel, 20 Central St., Rockport, Maine; 207-230-7211; www.rockportharborhotel.com . Rates from $499 in season; two-night minimum on summer weekends; pet-friendly.

Chris cash named executive director of umaine lobster institute.

Photo of Chris Cash

Maine native and University of Maine alumna Christina Cash has been named executive director at the UMaine Lobster Institute, effective May 17.

Cash has been with the Lobster Institute since 2021, serving as the assistant director of communication and outreach, and more recently as interim director. Before joining the institute, Cash served as an advancement officer at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in Boothbay Harbor, as well as program and development director at the Frances Perkins Center and director of outreach at the Institute for Broadening Participation, both in Damariscotta.

“It is an honor to be in this position as a liaison between industry and the university,” Cash said. “There’s so much going on in the lobster world right now and I look forward to collaborating with partners from industry, management and academia on research that can help the fishery. I hope to expand Lobster Institute’s programs and student opportunities based at the Darling Marine Center.”

Cash is a former first mate, captain and lobster boat owner/operator and holds an active captain’s license. In her new role, Cash will oversee the creation of a new executive committee, with subcommittees planned for outreach, research, workforce and other focus areas.

“We are excited about the next stage for the Lobster Institute, broadening its reach and impact across the UMaine campus, state and national and international lobster fishery partners. I know Chris will help effectively lead this broad coalition with strategic vision and continue the legacy of the Lobster Institute into the future,” said Dean Diane Rowland of the College of Earth, Life, and Health Sciences, where the Lobster Institute resides.

Cash will be based at UMaine’s Darling Marine Center.

“In her time at the Lobster Institute, Chris has already proven adept at fostering communications within the industry and advancing research to help benefit the lobster fishery as a whole,” said Marianne LaCroix, executive director of the Maine Lobster Marketing Collaborative and chair of the Lobster Institute advisory board stated. “She is ideally suited to furthering the Lobster Institute’s mission of supporting a sustainable and profitable lobster industry.”

Since 1987 the Lobster Institute has been a center of discovery, innovation and outreach at UMaine with the goal of promoting, conducting, and communicating research focused on the sustainability of the American lobster fishery in the U.S. and Canada.

UNE undergraduate receives BioME grant to study rare lobster larvae

A UNE student poses in front of the Saco River on UNE's campus

A University of New England undergraduate student has received a $5,000 grant from the Bioscience Association of Maine (BioME) to fund their summer research on the genetic basis for rare lobster coloration.

Ruby Motulsky ( Marine Sciences , ’25), who uses they/them pronouns, is a recipient of a BioME Summer Internship Award, which supports scientific achievement by financially assisting students who are interested in developing careers within the life sciences.

The grant funding will allow Motulsky to remain on UNE’s coastal Maine campus for the summer to research the early developmental stages of the American lobster by studying UNE’s famed orange lobster, Peaches, once her eggs hatch later this spring.

A local lobsterman donated Peaches to UNE in 2023 , and she is currently harboring thousands of eggs that, once hatched, may or may not share her rare orange coloration. Orange lobsters are estimated to be a one-in-30 million find.

“I’m very excited to spend my summer researching in UNE’s Arthur P. Girard Marine Science Center , and I’m grateful to BioME for this incredible opportunity,” Motulsky said. “This project will help me narrow down my research interests with valuable, hands-on experience that will inform my future research and educational pursuits.”

Working with their research advisor, Markus Frederich, Ph.D., professor of  marine sciences , and research assistant Aubrey Jane, M.S. Marine Sciences ’24, B.S. ’20, Motulsky aims to raise Peaches’ offspring through all five early developmental stages to examine the number of lobsters that share her orange color — the study of heritable traits known as epigenetics.

Motulsky and Jane also hope to create a histological atlas documenting the early development of the American lobster to reference in future research projects.

Motulsky’s work is part of a larger initiative launched at UNE this winter to  decode the molecular basis for rare lobster coloration through noninvasive methods.

With UNE’s reputation for excellence in the marine sciences , the University has become a magnet for these rare lobsters in recent years, housing an impressive lineup including blue, orange, yellow, split-colored, purple, and calico varieties — each with rarity ranging from 1-in-1 million to 1-in-50 million.

“We are fortunate to have amazing students like Ruby here at UNE who take on an exciting project, spend all their free time on it, and produce high-quality research,” Frederich remarked. “Securing their own summer funding is taking this project and Ruby’s involvement in this project to another level.”

Nearly 41% of the UNE’s undergraduate students participate in hands-on research with real-world applications , compared to just 23% of students nationally. UNE is unique among prominent research universities, where students often must wait to obtain a bachelor’s degree before even seeing the inside of a lab.

Motulsky said such student research opportunities are what drew them to Maine — 3,000 miles from their home in Los Angeles — to study at UNE.

“I knew I wanted to be somewhere that allows undergraduate students to become involved in research, particularly as a first year,” they said. “At UNE, I could get into research right away and discover the different areas of marine science there were to explore. I think getting this experience as an undergraduate student allows me to find my little niche within the scientific community.”

While they had to quickly adjust to Maine winters, Motulsky said the experience has been invaluable.

“This has also affirmed that I actually do want to pursue research as a career and, even though it’s a lot of hard work, it’s worth it,” they reflected. “It’s worth it to me to do this hard work and be a part of this community.”
