Best Time to Visit

The Best Time to Visit Miami

should i visit miami in august

TripSavvy /  Ashley Nicole Deleo n

The best time to visit Miami is in the Spring—from about mid-February through May. The weather is warm, hurricane season hasn’t started, and the humidity of summer hasn’t fully arrived. It’s also nearing the end of the high season, so crowd sizes will be smaller and prices will have dropped. Plus, the water is warm so you’ll be able to hit the beach and enjoy all the greatness that Florida has to offer.

Florida is hot and sunny for the majority of the year, so in truth, there’s never a bad time to visit. But use this guide to help you figure out the best time of year that works for you!

Many people make the mistake of thinking that it doesn’t matter when they visit Miami because it’s just one long summer season. But, this is not true. Although, the majority of the year is warm to hot and, even during the coldest months, it usually doesn’t dip below the high 50s F, there are still seasons with very different personalities. For one, summer in Miami is excruciatingly hot, humid, and rainy. It rains almost every day in the summer. Storms usually only last from about 15 minutes to an hour, and then the sun comes out and the humidity level rises. If you are planning a trip during the summer months, expect rainfall at some point during your time down south. Thunder and lightning storms are fairly common as well.

Hurricane Season in Florida

June through the end of November is hurricane season in Florida. That doesn’t necessarily mean there will be any hurricanes, but being prepared is important, especially if you’re visiting from somewhere far away. Of course, this doesn’t usually deter many people from visiting, summer is one of the busiest times of year to visit Florida, mainly due to the fact that kids are out of school and families can take an extended vacation. But, if you do plan a trip during hurricane season, it’s recommended to get travel insurance just in case.

Prices During High Season

The end of November through mid-April, particularly the time around the holidays, is high season throughout Florida. From snowbirds to students to anyone looking to escape the snow — expect large crowds and higher costs. Flights and hotels tend to book up fast and prices can get pretty high as you get closer to the season, so book early.

Traveling during high season does come with its perks, though. For example, from about Thanksgiving through New Year’s, every palm tree in Miami is adorned in sparkling lights, which adds an ambiance you wouldn’t normally get any other time of the year. Also, as much as prices overall may tend to be higher, there are a lot more deals and sales available too, so be on the lookout.

Winter: December, January, February

This is the high season in Miami for good reason. The weather is usually in the high 70s with very low humidity and little rain. The beaches are at their best this time of year and, although the crowds may be a bit larger, with so much sandy coastline, there is room for everyone by the sea. Hotels tend to be a little bit more expensive this time of year, so book your stay early.

Events to Check out:

  • The annual  Miami Marathon happens at the end of January or the beginning of February. Started in 2003, the event attracts all types of runners from around the world, both professional and amateur.
  • Art Basel is an annual international show of modern and contemporary art that takes place in South Beach the first week of December. The show attracts a long list of attendees—from celebrities to royalty, it’s a scene, to say the least. During the week of Art Basel many hotels, bars, and clubs will host events, parties, and the like, some open to the public and some not. If you’re visiting during the week of the show, expect larger crowds and traffic.

Spring: March, April, May

Spring is by far the most beautiful time to visit Miami. The humidity of the summer hasn’t fully hit yet and but the weather is warmer than winter with highs in the 80s. You can expect some rain, but not enough to ruin your trip. It’s the best season for rooftop happy hours or sunset cocktails on the beach. The one downside for some? Spring break . This is the time of year the city tends to get overrun by college kids on vacation, so bars and clubs get crowded pretty quickly. It’s always a good idea to make reservations in Miami, but it’s especially important during springtime.

  • One of the premier tennis events, the  Miami Open , takes place at the end of March every year, spilling into April.
  • Ultra Music Festival is an annual EDM festival that takes place during the last weekend in March. The three-day concert attracts a younger crowd that likes to party. Past musical acts have included Afrojack, David Guetta, Tiesto, and DeadMau5.
  • Miami Beach Gay Pride takes place annually with varying dates. What started as a small local event has blossomed into one of the largest gay pride gatherings in the country. The multi-day event includes a parade, block party, live music, and lots of LGBT-friendly vendors.

Summer: June, July, August

There’s only one word to describe a Miami summer: hot. Temperatures can reach the high 90s and rain is frequent. But, despite the mosquitoes, frizzy hair, and constant sweat, this is still one of the most popular times to visit the city. The beach in Miami is definitely at its best during the summer, the water is warm and the waves are perfect. Sunblock and bug spray are a must during summer, even on a cloudy day it’s easy to get sunburn. It’s also the heart of mosquito season, so try and stay covered during early evening hours or right after a rainfall when the mosquitoes are out the most.

  • Swim Week is a Fashion Week event that takes place in July. The week includes swimwear fashion shows from top designers, pool parties, cocktail hours, and lots of pop-up shops. You can expect to see lots of models running around South Beach this week.
  • If you’re a foodie, or just love to eat, visit the city during  Miami Spice . Participating restaurants across the city offer three-course meals at reduced rates—$28 for lunch/brunch and $42 for dinner. It’s a great time to eat at the places you normally would never dream of going to. Reservations are strongly recommended.

Fall: September, October, November

This is probably the quietest time to visit the city as summer is winding down and school is starting back up. But it’s still a great time to come down. Hurricane season is still in full-swing until November, so expect rain and humidity. The temperature tends to be in the mid-80s which means it’s still a great time to hit the beach. Truthfully, anytime of year is a great time to hit the beach in Miami. The crowds are also a bit smaller this season which is a good thing if you’re looking to save on your trip.

  • The  South Beach Seafood Festival takes place in October every year. This four-day festival showcases the best of the best in Miami culinary cuisine. Tasting events, live music, and lots of seafood abound at the event. It’s a great place to spend the day with family, friends, or both.
  • If you happen to be in Miami on Halloween, head to the  Lincoln Road Halloween party. As the night approaches the outdoor mall turns into Miami’s spookiest Halloween event. Wear a costume and come ready for a night of freakish fun. A kid’s version even takes place earlier in the day from 5-8 p.m.

The best time to visit Miami is in the spring, when the weather is warm and before hurricane season hits. During this time, humidity is low and the summer crowds have not yet arrived.

Hurricane season in Miami (and in all of Florida, in general) starts June 1 and lasts through November. Peak season typically hits during the months of August and September.

Miami is less likely to see crowds during the months of February through April, excluding President's Day and spring break. Crowds tend to be the highest in the winter.

The best time to visit Miami for the perfect getaway

What's on the agenda—chill, party, shop, play? Our seasonal breakdown of the best time to visit Miami will help you plan.

Most people think the seasons don’t change in Miami or that it’s just one long summer spell here. But that’s not entirely true. While our year-round sunshine makes going to one of the Miami beaches a thing you can do pretty much 365 days a year, what most people don’t account for is the rain. Miami can get pretty soggy, not to mention there’s a little something called hurricane season, which brings even bigger storms to these parts.

Something else to keep in mind when you’re visiting Miami are the tourists. Maybe you’re one of those people—hi! We like you but at certain times of the year there seem to be way too many of you, and that can be problematic for things like traffic and finding a room at one of the best South Beach hotels . So if you’re the type who likes to avoid crowds, you might want to read on.

Our guide to the best time to visit Miami isn’t comprehensive but the season-by-season breakdown should provide some needed guidance before you book. You’ll notice that while summer is oppressively hot and likely rain, it’s also less busy and, in turn, less expensive. Winter in Miami is glorious, and that’s when most of the snowbirds and out-of-towners descend on the city.

Whether you’re looking to party it up at the best Miami clubs or keep it lowkey with a few days on the sand, this guide to the best time to visit Miami will help you nail your next vacation in paradise.

When to visit Miami

Spring

Spring is our last real streak of great weather before the steaming hot summer arrives. A generally moderate climate can make for some absolutely gorgeous days—ideal for folks coming to Miami for the beach, fishing or other outdoorsy stuff .

Spring also boasts Miami Music Week (and Ultra Music Festival ), a massive gathering of every DJ you can imagine, which happens right at the beginning of spring (around March 20 to March 25). After that, our events schedule starts to cool down but the city remains pretty active.

Summer

Miami has a love/hate relationship with summer. It’s the city’s slow season, especially for hospitality. Restaurants and nightlife crowds decline significantly as tourists go back home. It also gets really, really hot and humid. July is the hottest month in Miami with an average temperature of 82°F (and you always have to be alert during hurricane season).

Are there perks? Sure. You won’t have to put up with big crowds like you might in winter. Getting a seat at Miami’s hottest restaurants is a breeze, especially during August and September, when the city-wide Miami Spice promotion arrives, offering fixed prices for dinner and lunch at some really fancy joints. If ogling bikini-clad models and rubbing shoulder with influencers is your thing, Miami Swim Week heats up the city every July.

Fall

As the humid blanket of summer begins to lift, Miami comes to life again. Parties and restaurants begin to fill up, while touring acts from major headliners to smaller indie acts grace our various-sized music venues .

Locals mix with a growing tourist crowd and it all ends with the absolute biggest annual event Miami has to offer: Art Basel Miami Beach (also known now as Miami Art Week), which invades the city in December 2022. Whether you’re in it for the flood of exhibits, the exclusive parties or the flagship show at the Miami Beach Convention Center , you’ll find something to do during Basel season.

Winter

Winter is the most popular time of year to visit Miami for obvious reasons. While the rest of the country freezes, it stays near-perfect in Miami. We’ll get some chilly cold fronts (at least by our standards) but most days are still just right for the beach or an outdoor happy hour.

While winter falls in a gap between high-profile  Art Basel and party-centric  Miami Music Week , expect no shortage of things to do and cute sights like boulevards of palm trees wrapped in festive lights. The city really takes advantage of its annual boom in population, and every year brings something new. Just be wary of those snowbird drivers crowding the roads.

Hurricane season

Hurricane season

Hurricane season in Miami overlaps spring, summer and fall, starting June 1 and ending November 30. In other words, the Atlantic hurricane season is long. Storms are frequent but not always aggressive, though 2022 preseason forecasts predict an above-average season with 17 to 21 named storms, 7 to 9 hurricanes and 3 to 5 major hurricanes. Hurricanes arrive with some notice so if your trip is booked and potentially a wash due to an upcoming storm, there's always the option to postpone.

Best Time to Visit Miami: Month-by-Month Guide

' src=

Famed for its white sand beaches, wonderful Art Deco architecture and world-class nightlife, Miami is one of the most popular cities to visit in the States. Each year, millions come to see its iconic sights or enjoy its sun, sea and sand.

Thanks to its tropical climate, the coastal city is very hot almost all year round. Most people therefore visit in the warm winter months when its heat and humidity are not so oppressive. This peak period is, of course, more expensive and all its hotels, beaches and attractions are pretty busy. Both spring break and its carnival celebrations also attract large crowds.

To help you plan your trip, let’s take a look at what the weather is like and what big events are going on each month in the Magic City. We’ll also cover when prices are cheaper or more expensive and what the crowds are like too.

What’s the Weather Like in Miami?

Best Time to Visit Miami

Set in the southeast of Florida, the large metropolis lies in between the steamy Everglades wetlands to the west and sparkling Biscayne Bay to the east. Its climate is influenced by its position above the Tropic of Cancer and the nearby Gulf Stream that runs offshore.

Summers are very hot and humid with it also raining an incredible amount from June up to October. This is also the hurricane season when average temperatures are about 84 to 88°F (29 to 31°C). The sweltering heat and constant mugginess make it quite an unpleasant time of year to visit.

In contrast, the winter months are thankfully cooler with it also raining a lot less. Still sunny and warm, its days are best for ambling along Ocean Drive, seeing its Art Deco buildings or sunning yourself on the city’s spectacular beaches.

Best months to visit Miami

As its summers are very hot and humid, and see almost daily thunderstorms tip down, winter is by far the most popular time of year to visit. From December through February, conditions are perfect for lounging on its beautiful beaches or hitting up its pounding nightclubs. Prices are highest though but many of the city’s top events take place then too.

March to May is another lovely period to visit as the snowbirds escaping the colder climes in Canada, the US and Europe have headed home. Prices are lower and there are fewer crowds except for during spring break when wild parties break out everywhere. It’s also well worth taking day trips to places like the Everglades or Orlando’s theme parks while they’re quieter.

Miami in January

Art Deco

As it is one of the best months to visit Miami, January is generally quite busy with both hotel and airfare prices higher than in the summer. While the days are a bit shorter, temperatures of around 75°F (24°C) couldn’t be better for sightseeing or sunbathing. Loads of fun events take place with seasonal sites like Christmas Wonderland and Santa’s Enchanted Forest also staying open the first week.

After that, there is the colourful and quirky King Mango Strut Parade to take part in with the Miami Marathon also making its way through the city’s streets in January. Other than seeing all the latest looks modeled at Fashion Week, you can admire the attractive, historic houses and hotels in South Beach during its Art Deco Weekend. The South Florida Fair in West Palm Beach also has tons of exhilarating rides and exquisite food to try out.

Miami in February

Miami Winter

Almost identical weatherwise, February is still the peak season when prices are highest and huge crowds throng about its beaches and boardwalks. Things do tend to quieten down a bit though midway through the month as many snowbirds head back up north. Its warm, sunny days are great for topping up your tan or taking tours about the Everglades while it’s dry.

Although Ocean Drive and its Art Deco District are busier, there are lots of other cool things going on too. On President’s Day weekend, for instance, Coconut Grove hosts its annual Arts Festival while knights, minstrels and magicians flock to the Florida Renaissance Festival.

The South Beach Wine & Food Festival also organizes over a hundred culinary events, catering to foodies. To top it all off, the elegant old Royal Palm Hotel puts on the week-long Winter Party Festival for the LGBTQ community.

Miami in March

ultra music festival

Before the scorching heat and stifling humidity of summer set in, springs in Miami are pretty much the perfect season to explore the city. With the weather warming up a bit and its days now lasting longer, you can stroll about Little Havana or hang out at the picturesque Crandon Park. Prices for hotels and flights remain expensive though, especially during spring break when thousands head to Miami Beach to sunbathe, party and enjoy its watersports.

While March is always a busy month, there’s an infectious energy about Miami with exciting events taking place everywhere. The nation’s largest Latin music festival, Calle Ocho, is held while the Miami Open Tennis Tournament instead attracts sports fans.

Its Miami Music Week and Ultra Music Festival also have great concerts and DJ sets to listen to. If the crowds get too much, you can kayak or snorkel about Biscayne National Park’s mangroves and reefs.

Miami in April

Gay Pride parade

Once spring break is over and the college students have headed home, April is much quieter and cheaper in Miami. Average temperatures now hit 80°F (27°C) with there being about 10 hours of sunshine each day. Before the rains pick up in May, it’s a fabulous month to explore the Everglades or sunbathe, swim and enjoy watersports along the coast.

Aside from sauntering about the Art Deco District or along the Miami Beach Boardwalk, you can take in the exotic plants and orchids at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Many also visit Orlando’s famous amusement parks which are a bit less crowded, except for around the Easter holidays.

You can also catch movie screenings at the Miami Film Festival or take part in parades and parties for Pride.

Miami in May

Miami in May

The beginning of May is also a good time to visit weatherwise before the heat and humidity steadily increase later in the month. While its waters also warm up – making for some lovely swimming and scuba diving – it does rain rather a lot for 11 days on average. Both airfares and accommodation are more affordable now as tourist numbers start to dwindle.

As the hot weather is ideal for soaking up some sun, you can always visit Fort Lauderdale’s beaches or see its thrilling Air Show when stunt pilots shoot overhead. Miami Beach also puts on a similar spectacle later in May while military displays, concerts and parties are held for Memorial Day weekend too.

Before hurricane season hits, this is the last month you can hop on an unforgettable cruise around the Caribbean.

Miami in June

Miami Storm

June sees the heavens open up above Miami and fierce thunderstorms drench the city. Aside from being very wet and rainy for about 16 days on average, its extreme heat and humidity make sightseeing unpleasant. As hurricanes can also hit, very few holidaymakers arrive with hotels and flights being cheaper as a result.

While its rain showers are frequent and heavy, the skies usually clear up quickly, giving way to resplendent sunshine. If you do visit, you’ll find the beaches and parks almost empty with many tourists making the most of the air-conditioning in its museums and malls. There are also lots of superb screenings to catch at the American Black Film Festival.

Miami in July

Florida Supercon

As people have summer holidays, July is a bit busier despite it being the hurricane season. Average temperatures hit 88°F (31°C), with its sweat-inducing humidity also sticking around until October. On the plus side, it rains a lot less with most of its downpours occurring in the afternoon.

As such, you can have some wonderful beach days, sunbathing and swimming or even scuba diving and dolphin watching at Key West and Biscayne National Park.

During the low season, prices for hotels are very reasonable though airfares are often more expensive. If you’re not topping up your tan, you’ll want to cool off somewhere with aircon as sightseeing is unenjoyable in the heat.

Some amazing live music and epic fireworks displays are also held for the 4th of July. Otherwise celebs and cosplayers, anime lovers and gamers all descend upon the Miami Beach Convention Center for the Florida Supercon.

Miami in August

Miami August

August also sees more people visit Miami though the weather is almost exactly the same as July but even rainier. With torrential downpours soaking the city for 18 days on average, it’s best to take an umbrella with you wherever you go.

From the middle of the month onwards, hurricanes often hit the coast, disrupting travel plans and causing beaches to close.

Despite this and the swarms of mosquitoes that buzz around, more tourists do arrive due to the summer holidays. Numbers are still low though so you’ll easily be able to find space on its beaches when it’s not raining.

Most people instead spend time at places like Dolphin Mall or splashing around in the Venetian Pool. To entice diners, lots of establishments offer deals as part of its Miami Spice Restaurant Months initiative.

Miami in September

Little Havana

With all the summer crowds now gone and the terrible weather persisting, September is one of the quietest months in town. After Labor Day weekend parties, concerts and parades take place, both hotel prices and airfares are very affordable. Although still very rainy, most of its downpours occur in the evening or early morning if you want to hit up the beach in the meantime.

If you can stand the sweltering heat and humidity, you can enjoy sunbathing, swimming and watersports or go sightseeing when it’s not raining. Popular areas like Ocean Drive and Little Havana will be a lot less busy if you want to get a more local feel for the city.

Besides trying top restaurants for Miami Spice, you can watch the Miami Dolphins kick off their NFL season at the Hard Rock Stadium.

Miami in October

Miami October

Although the weather is still very wet, the number of tourists visiting Miami finally increases in October as the humidity is much more manageable. Temperatures of 84°F (29°C) are still a bit hot for sightseeing though with it also raining rather a lot for 14 days on average.

Once the skies clear, you can lounge about at Lummus Park Beach and swim in its warm waters. As it is still the low season and hurricanes can hit, prices are very reasonable with its tourist sights, hotels and beaches all not too crowded. Other than seeing the Land Crabs and White Pelicans that migrate to South Florida, you can sample sumptuous beers at Grovetoberfest.

Its colourful carnival is also loads of fun to take part in as are its spooky Halloween parties.

Miami in November

South Beach

As it rains a lot less and the heat and humidity are a bit lower, November is a lovely month to visit Miami. While there are now ‘just’ 7 hours of sunshine and 11 of daylight per day, you should have ample time to see its attractions or sunbathe and swim in the sea. Any showers are usually light, short and in the evening with the hurricane season now having passed.

With conditions being drier, you can explore the enormous Everglades or enjoy kiteboarding and windsurfing along the coast. It’s not a bad time to visit Orlando’s theme parks or places like Key West and Fort Lauderdale before they get crowded. Holiday lights and decorations are strung up with parades and parties also held for Thanksgiving.

Miami in December

Miami Christmas

December is the absolute peak season in Miami when absolutely everywhere is packed and hotel prices are at their highest. Popular spots such as Ocean Drive, its Art Deco District and Little Havana are all heaving.

As temperatures average 75°F (24°C) and the weather is dry, the sunny days couldn’t be better for enjoying its beaches and boardwalks. Many snowbirds arrive for winter with plenty of tourists also coming to spend Christmas in the warmth.

Besides trying out some exciting watersports and hitting up its trendy nightclubs, there are tons of events to attend too. Aside from Art Basel’s interesting exhibitions, there are cheery Christmas markets to stroll around while the Winterfest Boat Parade takes place offshore.

At the end of the month, live music and fireworks displays are held at Bayfront Park for New Year’s Eve with plenty of other parties popping up all around town.

Best Time to Visit Miami, Florida: Weather by Month

By: Author Guest Blogger

Posted on Last updated: January 17, 2024

When is the best time to visit Miami, Florida? Whether your trip to Miami includes a stay at one of the area's exclusive hotels like the W Hotel or staying in one of the many luxurious  vacation rentals in Miami Beach ,  when  you visit impacts what you'll pay and can experience.

If you go in the high season, you'll get great weather in the summer, but you'll miss out on lower prices and smaller crowds (but still pleasant weather) in the winter months.

Of course, Florida is the Sunshine State. South Florida and Miami are noted for a moderate average temperature year-round, but significant events and seasonal adjustments will play a part. Let's take a closer look.

The best time to travel to Miami Beach will depend on your interests. (photo: Antonio Cuellar)

What To Expect in Miami

In January, Miami enjoys mild temperatures that are a far cry from the sweltering heat of summer.

The average high hovers around a comfortable 74 F (23 C), while the average low dips to about 60 F (16 C). It's weather that's perfect for a light jacket in the evening and beachwear during the day.

In addition to being the coldest month, January is one of Miami's drier months, with an average rainfall of about 1.7 inches.

If you're interested in visiting Miami at one of the most cost-effective times of the year and work or children in school aren't a burden, January is a good time. There are often great deals available.

While January in Miami can be cool, and the beach may not always be an option if a cold wave reaches South Florida, it's the off-season.

In the off-season, you can visit Miami's clubs, museums, zoos, and other attractions with fewer crowds and possibly better prices, including luxury accommodations.

There are also great events at this time of the year (especially in late January), such as the Miami Marathon and the famous Art Deco Weekend .

February continues the mild, pleasant weather trend, making Miami a winter escape haven.

Temperature-wise, you're looking at an average high of around 76 F (24 C) and an average low of about 62 F (17 C).

It's that sweet spot where you can still rock a swimsuit by day and maybe throw on a light sweater for those evening strolls along Ocean Drive.

As for rainfall, February is still in Miami's dry season, but it's a tad wetter than January. The average rainfall for the month is approximately 2.3 inches.

While you might see a few more clouds in the sky, rain showers are generally short-lived and often happen overnight or in the early morning.

So, your beach plans are pretty safe, and an umbrella is more of a “just in case” item than a necessity.

The South Beach Wine & Food Festival (SOBEWFF) is in late February.

The weather is nearly perfect in Miami and South Florida during the spring months.

From March to May, the Magic City starts to heat up in more ways than one, offering a blend of warm temperatures and a lineup of outdoor events that'll make you want to extend your stay.

The dry season is still in place, and temperatures are warm but generally moderate. This period has a low chance of rain, so it's a great time to get out and enjoy live music or a food festival.

March kicks off the spring season with average high temperatures around 78 F (26 C) and lows around 64 F (18 C). Rainfall is still relatively low, averaging about 2.3 inches for the month.

The month of March is known for world-famous events like the Ultra Music Festival and Miami Music Week .

April sees a slight uptick in temperatures, with highs averaging around 81 F (27 C) and lows at 68 F (20 C). Rainfall starts to increase a bit, too, with an average of 3.1 inches. April is the shoulder season.

It's often the best time of year to visit, with warm weather and outdoor events but without the days of rain that you can get in the wettest months.

While large crowds of college students on Spring Break impact the community, its adverse effects are minimal, like elsewhere in Florida.

The Miami Heat (basketball team) is winding down their season, while the Miami Marlins (baseball team) are getting started with theirs.

May is when you'll start to feel that Miami heat. The average high temperature climbs to about 85 F (29 C) and lows around 72 F (22 C).

As for rainfall, May marks the beginning of Miami's wet season, with an average of 5.3 inches.

While you might encounter more frequent showers during the rainy season, they're often in the late afternoon and clear up quickly, leaving you plenty of sunshine for daytime adventures.

Travel Tip: Save money in Miami with Go City. Buy a 1, 2, 3, or 5-day  all-inclusive pass  to enjoy tours, museums, and the Everglades at a discounted rate. Get your  Go City pass here .

June is when Miami's wet season is in full swing. The average high temperature is around 88 F (31 C), while the low averages at about 76 F (24 C). Rainfall is significant, with an average of 7.4 inches for the month.

It's also the start of the Atlantic hurricane season in Florida. As temperatures are heating up, so does the tourist season and the number of events scheduled throughout the community.

South Beach is popping every night of the week, and the beautiful beaches are packed, making it perhaps the best time to travel to Miami.

The summer peak season is also the time when this city shines. Weekend festivals, art shows, and community events abound—you'll enjoy your time during this period, no matter your interests.

July is the hottest month of the year in Miami, so prepare to embrace the heat.

The average high temperature is a toasty 89 F (32 C), and the low is around 77 F (25 C). Rainfall averages about 5.8 inches

August keeps the heat coming with average high temperatures of 89 F (32 C) and lows around 77 F (25 C). Rainfall is a bit higher than July, averaging around 6.8 inches for the month.

The afternoons often feature brief showers or thunderstorms that are seldom cause to cancel plans, although you may need to adjust.

Fall is another opportunity for great deals, with terrific off-season pricing and exceptional availability of luxury accommodations.

The humidity in Miami's weather lessens, and locals begin to appreciate more moderate temperatures.

The average high temperature is around 87 F (31 C), and the low is about 76 F (24 C). Rainfall is still significant, averaging about 8.1 inches, making it one of the wetter months.

It's still hurricane season, but it's coming to an end. The beach weather is outstanding, and the crowds have begun to thin out.

The Miami Dolphins (football team) and college football's Miami Hurricanes start their seasons. Again, if your situation allows, this is a prime time to schedule a visit to the city.

October marks the beginning of the transition to cooler weather. The average high temperature drops to about 84 F (29 C), and the low hovers around 72 F (22 C).

Rainfall decreases to an average of 6.3 inches, and you'll start to feel the high humidity lifting.

There are good values to be found toward the end of the year, but visitors and rates increase as the holidays approach.

The average high temperature is around 78 F (26 C), and the low dips to about 66 F (19 C). Rainfall drops significantly to an average of 3.3 inches, making it an excellent time for outdoor activities and al fresco dining.

December is one of the most pleasant months to visit Miami.

The average high temperature is a comfortable 75 F (24 C), and the low is around 61 F (16 C). Rainfall is at its lowest, averaging just 2 inches for the month.

One of Miami's major cultural events of the year, Art Basel Miami Beach, takes place in early December, and the Christmas season is hectic.

Plan for the accommodations you desire during this time, and you shouldn't be disappointed.

If you're arriving from a colder climate, the combination of shorts, sandals, holiday decorations, and palm trees can be both disorienting and enjoyable.

Alright, folks, let's wrap this up! When it comes to the best time to visit Miami, the answer depends on what you're looking for.

If you're all about that sun and surf, the summer months are your jam. Just be prepared for higher prices and bigger crowds.

On the flip side, the winter months are a solid bet if you're looking for milder temperatures and fewer people.

Miami is a city that thrives all year round, each season offering its unique vibe and set of activities.

From the high-energy events of March's Ultra Music Festival to the cultural richness of December's Art Basel, there's always something happening in the Magic City.

So, when's the best time to visit Miami? Well, whenever you decide to go, know that Miami is always ready to show you a good time.

Just pack according to the season, keep an eye on event calendars, and, most importantly, bring your sense of adventure.

With its year-round moderate temperatures and vibrant lifestyle, Miami is always a good idea.

Best Times To Visit Miami Beach

The best time to visit Miami Beach is between March and May when the sun shines with temperatures in the high 70s and low 80s during the day. Aside from the gorgeous weather, a spring visit allows you to sidestep the peak winter rates. This part of Florida enjoys a subtropical climate, meaning it's usually warm year-round and a bit rainy. Pack an umbrella if you visit in summer or fall; at the very least, you can expect some afternoon showers that clear up quickly. In the worst-case scenario, you could experience torrential downpours since Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November. If you're trying to keep your bank account in check, hotel rates and flight fares tend to decrease in the summer as the temperature and precipitation increase.

12 Things Every Traveler Should Know Before Visiting Miami

author image

See recent posts by Kevin Brouillard

Perched on Florida’s southern tip, Miami draws visitors from around the world with its blend of urban buzz and glamorous beach scene. However, visiting Miami is very different from visiting other popular Florida destinations. Why is that? Well, in terms of cultural diversity, vibrant nightlife, and overall bustle, Miami can feel light years away from hotspots like Orlando , St. Pete Beach , and the Florida Keys . To help first-time visitors make the most of their time by avoiding any faux pas (and hopefully saving some cash along the way), we’ve compiled a list of 12 key things every traveler should know before visiting Miami. Read on for tips on everything from the best time to go to Miami and its best beaches to where you should stay on your Miami vacation.

1. Miami is a late-night city that likes to party.

Downtown Miami at night

New York isn’t the only U.S. city that never sleeps. Whether you’re just dining out or gearing up for Miami’s legendary club scene, you’ll want to consider pushing your plans back later than usual — or risk being the first to arrive. Leading clubs, such as Space and E11even are open around the clock, while another top choice, LIV, doesn’t open its doors until nearly midnight. You’ll also want to keep in mind that headlining DJs usually don’t take the decks until as late in the night — we’re talking between 2 and 3 AM in most instances. If you’re looking for something on the earlier side, head to Lagniappe, an open-air bar that puts on live music for a more traditionally primetime crowd. You’ll also want to make note of the many seasonal parties that take up residence along Miami Beach, which can mean 24/7 beats for days at a time. These include March’s Ultra Music Festival, May’s Rolling Loud, and the week-long Miami Beach Pride that starts in late-March. This is to say nothing of the individual hotel parties that take place up and down the beach, as well as the events associated with major events like Art Basel and the Miami Food Festival.

2. Pack more than beachwear for your Miami vacation.

Acqualina Resort & Spa on the Beach

Acqualina Resort & Spa on the Beach/Oyster

This isn’t the Florida Keys or Daytona Beach , so don’t plan on sporting flip-flops and swimsuits anywhere other than the beach or hotel pool when you’re in Miami. To be fair, even the pools can feel like fashion runways at some of the city’s posh hotels. Many restaurants and bars enforce dress codes in Miami — including Miami Beach and South Beach — while clubs can be as selective, barring entry to sandal-wearing clientele. Miami is one of the United States’ most cosmopolitan cities, so dress to impress, or at least try not stand out for the wrong reasons. If you’re after a more casual vibe, the beach towns up the coast makes a great alternative, or stick to the restaurants and bars tucked away on Miami’s side streets rather than the dining scene along Collins Ave., Lincoln Road, and Ocean Drive.

3. The effects of climate change are already flooding Miami — and it’s not going to get better.

Beach at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne

Beach at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne/Oyster

Oh, Miami — so blessed and so cursed at the same time. While the city sits firmly in the hurricane zone and has been victim to several major storms in the past, the largest current threat is fair-weather flooding due to climate change. These floods are most often associated with king tides, which are excessively high tides caused by lunar and solar cycles. While these have been a normal occurrence since the beginning of time, rising sea levels fueled by climate change have cause these tides to become even more destructive in Miami. This is exacerbated by the porous stone that underlies much of the South Florida region, allowing water to rise from directly underneath this major urban area. King-tide flooding can happen regardless of weather — though it’s worse during high tides and weather events that cause the sea near shorelines to swell. In other words: It can be perfectly sunny outside, but several streets will be filled with water and impassable. September through November — which coincide with the end of hurricane season and the king-tide cycles — are the worst time of year for this troubling phenomenon.

4. Miami is home to huge Caribbean and Latin American communities.

Domino Plaza

Cuban culture is incredibly prominent in Miami, and enjoying a fresh mojito while watching a live salsa performance are highly recommended experiences. The strong Cuban presence stems from the fact that more than 25% of Miami-Dade County residents are Cuban-born plus the many descendants of Cuban immigrants that have arrived over the past six decades. However, this still constitutes less than half of the city’s foreign-born population. Miami is also home to significant Haitian, Bahamian, Venezuelan, and Colombian communities — to name just a few. Between restaurants, art galleries, and music venues, there are plenty of ways to dive deeper into these other cultures. For starters, head to Little Haiti for free concerts and art at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex. Be sure to stop for spicy seafood at laidback Chef Creole.

5. The art scene is booming in Miami.

Wynwood, Miami, United States

Miami may not have the largest collection of museums, but art permeates the city in numerous ways, from public art and cultural centers to galleries and major art fairs. The Wynwood neighborhood, located just north of Downtown Miami, is teeming with street art and murals. The movement began in 2009 with the open-air Wynwood Walls, which encompasses 18 walls of work created by international graffiti artists. Since then, street art has expanded throughout the neighborhood, with notable displays at Wynwood Brewing Company and along NW 2 nd Avenue. Other street art hotspots include Calle Ocho in Little Havana and throughout Little Haiti. Since 2002, Art Basel has drawn renowned artists, collectors, and enthusiasts to Miami each December for a week’s worth of exhibitions. If you can’t make the event, fret not, as many of the participating galleries showcase outstanding works of art year-round. The sizable Rubell Family Collection exhibits a wealth of avant-garde works by art legends like Keith Haring and Andy Warhol. Free exhibits can be found at Locust Projects and Spinello Projects, while Yeleen Gallery in Little Haiti features works that highlight the neighborhood’s Caribbean roots.

6. Miami Beach isn’t the city’s only beach (and isn’t all there is to Miami).

Aerial Photography at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel

Miami Beach — the famed stretch of sand that’s lined by stunning art deco buildings — is a must for a proper Miami visit. In fact, many people consider Miami Beach and South Beach to be Miami itself. That’s problematic for a ton of reasons. However, one of the biggest sins among them is limiting yourself when it comes to beaches. Many first-time visitors make the mistake of not venturing farther afield to take full advantage of the extensive network of beaches found in the Miami region. Below South Beach, Virginia Key boasts sandy shorelines without the crowds. Admission to Virginia Key Beach Park costs $8 per vehicle on the weekend, but the extra space and kayaking through wetlands are worth the added cost. Heading farther out on the causeway, Crandon Park is a family-friendly beach on Key Biscayne with water-sports and cabana rentals. Just above Miami Beach, Haulover Beach is divided between nude sunbathing in the north and a dog-friendly portion in the south.

7. Public transportation in Miami requires some know-how (and patience).

Aerial Photography at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel

Miami’s public transportation system is the largest in Florida, and includes buses, trolleys, Metromover, and Metrorail. Both the Miami Trolley and Metromover are free to use and aid in visiting the mainland portions of Miami, such as Little Havana, Wynwood, and Brickell City Centre. That being said, both are limited in geographical scope and — notably — don’t connect to Miami Beach or South Beach. The Metrorail connects with the Metromover at several stations, but requires a $2.25 fare. It’s an affordable option for traveling to the airport and the outlying neighborhood of Coconut Grove , but little else. It also doesn’t connect with Miami Beach. The Metrobus is the most extensive public transit network in the city, but is impeded by the congested traffic that is pervasive throughout Miami’s streets. For traveling shorter distances, try Freebee – a free electric car service that can be accessed via the Freebee mobile app. While the service is free thanks to funding from car door advertisements, be sure to tip your driver a few bucks. If you’re staying in Miami Beach and South Beach only, consider renting a bike, using your own two feet, or bank on relying on taxis. Bringing your own car? Get ready for epic parking headaches (more on that below).

8. Parking in Miami is pricey, challenging to find, and strictly enforced.

Ocean Drive in Miami

Ocean Drive/Oyster

As mentioned previously, Miami is somewhat notorious for its traffic. However, even unperturbed and seasoned city drivers should be aware of some Miami parking peculiarities before getting behind the wheel. In Miami Beach, street parking is the costliest option, running as high as $4 per hour in South Beach. Off-street lots cost comparatively less at $2 per hour, while parking garages are the best option for lengthier stays with day rates as low as $20. On the flipside, parking costs in downtown Miami neighborhoods operate in the reverse order. Hourly rates in parking garages run as high as $7 per hour, while a full-day can cost nearly $30. Furthermore, avoid parking in Miami Beach’s residential zones without a valid permit during restricted hours, which include the entire weekend as well as weekday evenings. These rules are strictly enforced and the authorities will not hesitate to tow your car away.

9. When is high season in Miami? Book ahead if visiting from December through April.

Beach at the COMO Metropolitan Miami Beach/Oyster

While Miami bustles throughout the year, the high season for tourism runs from December through mid-April, with notable peaks around the Art Basel festival in early December, between Christmas and New Year’s Day, and during spring break. While prices do rise with demand, you can reduce the added expense by booking flights and hotels several months in advance if you want your visit to coincide with the city’s best weather.

10. The gay scene is out and proud in Miami.

The Infinity Pool at The Standard Miami

The Infinity Pool at The Standard Miami/Oyster

When it comes to gay life in Florida, Miami and Ft. Lauderdale (up the coast) take the cake. Miami serves as a major party destination for LGBTQ travelers, and has a handful of legendary gay clubs. Twist and Palace are the most famous of these venues, and each draw world-famous DJs and host excellent drag shows. You’ll find plenty of smaller venues throughout town as well, some of which cater to a mixed gay-straight crowd. Hotels in Miami are almost all universally welcoming of LGBTQ travelers, and you’ll see couples of all stripes holding hands in public. The city hosts several major gay events throughout the year as well, including the White Party and Miami Pride events.

11. Miami is expensive (but there are ways to save).

Broken Shaker in Miami

Broken Shaker in Miami/Oyster

There’s no way around it: Miami is one of the priciest cities to visit in the United States. Given its legendary status as a mecca for parties, beaches, luxury services, amazing restaurants, art, and nightlife, the city has enough pull to make it a hotspot year round. While we’ve already told you that the winter months and early spring are high season — and thus mean paying a premium on everything from flights to hotels — there are ways to save. You’ll find slightly cheaper hotel rates if you’re willing to stay on the back side of Miami Beach, toward Biscayne Bay. From there, it’s only a 15-minute walk to the beach, and you’ll enjoy a quieter vibe. You’ll also find meals for slightly less if you dine away from hotspots like Lincoln Road, Ocean Drive, and Collins Ave. Food and drink on the mainland are generally less expensive as well, and you’ll likely get more for your money when it comes to hotels, too. However, you’ll be paying to commute to the beach and nightlife of South Beach. If you’re willing to visit when the weather is humid and hot, May can be a decent time of year as well, with rates that are lower than the winter and early spring months.

12. It can be fun to brush up on your Spanish in Miami.

Versalles in Little Havana

Versalles in Little Havana/Oyster

Miami’s mix of Latin American and Caribbean cultures means that Spanish is the first or second language for the majority of its residents. In fact, only about a quarter of Miami-Dade County speak only English. That being said, you aren’t expected to be a Spanish master here. However, it can be fun to practice your Spanish while you’re in town. If you’re addressed in Spanish, certainly make a go at having a basic conversation. For Spanish newbies, using simple greetings like “cómo estás” (how are you) when appropriate will earn you some credibility. Even more skilled Spanish speakers may still find the more prevalent Cuban accent hard to decipher, so be patient and don’t hesitate to employ Spanglish in this multicultural city when necessary. It’s also worth building up your knowledge of food-related lingo to help navigate menus at hole-in-the-wall establishments and restaurants alike. That’s particularly true at the old-school Cuban diners found throughout the city. To put your language skills to the test, try ordering a cafécito (Cuban espresso) in the Little Havana neighborhood.

It’s no secret: We love the 1 Hotels brand. There’s just something about how effortlessly they combine sustainability, luxury services and amenities, and boho style that makes them appealing no matter where you are in the world. Of course, their South Beach outpost has the added bonus of overlooking Miami’s beautiful beach, and features one of the nicest pools in all of South Beach. It’s also just a bit removed from the insanity of central South Beach and Collins Avenue, which makes it extra appealing for an exclusive luxury getaway.

There’s a dedicated area for children on the beach, as well as an extensive kids’ club that organizes tons of different programs for kids aged 4 to 12.

should i visit miami in august

Miami is an incredible city to visit with so many things to do. From exploring the culture and food scene to soaking up some sun at one of the many beautiful beaches, Miami is a must-visit destination in Florida.

Being married to someone for over a decade who was born and raised in Miami, I have visited Miami over a dozen times. Each time, I’ve had the chance to explore a bit more of this captivating and enchanting city!

I love visiting Miami. It’s always such a lively and fun destination – not to mention it’s home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the U.S. The city is constantly developing new unique neighborhoods with an exciting variety of restaurants, coffee shops, and trendy boutiques. It’s an incredible place for a weekend getaway as a solo traveler or a weeklong vacation with family and friends.

This post will detail the best options for a weekend in Miami itinerary, including a 2-day Miami itinerary, a 3-day Miami itinerary, and a 4-day Miami itinerary. For those who are looking for a longer stay, you’ll also find a unique 5-day itinerary for Miami!

2 Days in Miami

If you are spending only 2 days in Miami, you’ll want to focus on the top sites like Miami Beach, the Art Deco District, and Little Havana.

Day 1: Visit Miami’s Famous Beaches and Art Deco District

Art deco district.

Start your trip to Miami by heading to the Art Deco Miami Beach District. This historic neighborhood in South Beach has a variety of different buildings that were originally built between 1925 and 1940. On top of their rich history, these buildings are also colorful, glamorous, and extremely picturesque.

This neighborhood features an Art Deco style that became popular in the 1920s. Most of the architecture is based on basic geometric shapes, tropical colors, and neon lighting – giving them a unique, Miami vibe.

You can explore the Art Deco District on your own, but you’ll get much more out of it by taking a guided walking tour. This Art Deco Walking Tour is a great way to see the unique architecture while hearing fascinating stories about the area from a Design Preservation League guide.

If you’re visiting Miami in January , I highly recommend stopping by the Art Deco Weekend Festival.

Miami Beaches

Of course, no trip to Miami is complete without enjoying some of Miami’s best beaches. In the afternoon on day one of your Miami itinerary, you may want to take some time to relax and soak up the sun. But which beach should you head to?

The most famous beach in Miami is South Beach, which is known for attracting rich and famous visitors from all over the world. South Beach is an entire neighborhood in the Miami Beach area, and there are plenty of shops, restaurants, nightclubs, and bars in addition to the long stretch of sandy beach.

Another must-visit beach is South Pointe Beach, which is at the southernmost tip of Miami Beach. In addition to its sandy beach, this area also has a fishing pier, an off-leash dog area, and a picnic space.

For beaches that are less crowded and have more of a relaxed vibe, you’ll want to head further north on Miami Beach to Mid Beach and North Beach. These beaches are more family-friendly, quieter, and overall calmer compared to South Beach.

Miami Botanical Garden

The Miami Beach Botanical Garden should definitely be on your Miami itinerary, especially if you have a soft spot for nature. Located in the heart of Miami Beach, this urban oasis is a 10-minute drive from South Beach. It’s a perfect spot to unwind and immerse yourself in a world of natural beauty without venturing far from the city’s popular spots.

Admission is absolutely free! Open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, the Miami Beach Botanical Garden spans over three acres and is home to a mesmerizing variety of flora and fauna. Wander through the grounds and you’ll come across flowering trees, vibrant orchids, over 100 species of palms, and philodendrons.

Be sure to check their event calendar as they offer a variety of events from yoga and tai chi classes to farmer’s markets and orchard exchanges.

Miami Beach at Night

From cocktail bars to nightclubs, Miami is world-famous for its nightlife scene. There is something for everyone, whether you are looking to dress up and experience a Miami club or simply enjoy a nice dinner with specialty cocktails.

South Beach is one of the best places for nightlife in Miami. To start the night, head to one of the area’s famous restaurants like Joe’s Stone Crab, Stubborn Seed, or Azabu. If you are looking to experience a Miami nightclub, popular choices include LIV, M2, and Story.

Miami Beach is a very safe area , but it’s always smart to book a Lyft or an Uber when coming back late at night.

Day 2:  Explore Miami’s Art and Culture in Little Havana and Wynwood

On day two in Miami, venture outside of Miami Beach to enjoy some art and culture in Little Havana and Wynwood.

Little Havana

In the morning, head to Little Havana – the center of Cuban culture in the city. It’s known for its vibrant culture, delicious Cuban food, lively Latin music, and hand-rolled cigar shops.

One of the best ways to explore Little Havana is by taking a Little Havana Food and Walking Tour . Miami is famous for its incredible Cuban food, and on this tour, you’ll get to try chicken plantain cups, flan ice cream, croquetas, guava pastelitos, mojitos, and more!

Don’t take this tour only for the tasty food, because you’ll also learn about Cuban history and influence in Miami and visit a cigar factory. It’s the best way to maximize your time and get the most out of your visit to Little Havana.

Wynwood Walls

After exploring Little Havana, head north to the Wynwood neighborhood. Wynwood is famous for its street art murals, nicknamed the Wynwood Walls. This artsy area is perfect for exploring, but make sure to have your camera ready because there are tons of great photo ops here.

You can choose to explore the area and admire the art on your own, or take a group tour. This Wynwood Street Art Tour is led by a local artist and will take you via golf cart to some of the coolest murals while giving you behind-the-scenes info on the artists behind the street art.

Another fun option is to join a Wynwood Party Bike Bar Cawl , which will take you around to different street art murals all while riding and enjoying some drinks on a bicycle pub crawl.

This is a great choice if you want to meet other travelers or just enjoy some drinks and get some fantastic photos along the way.

Me and my twin boys in front of a colorful street mural in Wynwood – a must-add to any Miami itinerary.

Miami Design District

Located north of Wynwood, The Miami Design District is a vibrant blend of high-end fashion boutiques, luxury brands, and cutting-edge art galleries. This area is not just about shopping; it’s a cultural hub where you can enjoy unique events and exhibitions, from fashion shows to art workshops. For food enthusiasts, the district offers a diverse range of dining options, including upscale restaurants, cafes, and markets.

If you’re looking for a unique Instagram-worthy spot, the Miami Design District is a must-add to your Miami itinerary. Be sure to not miss the Miami Museum Garage, an architectural marvel in the Design District famous for its eclectic facade designed by five different architects. Each section showcases a unique style, ranging from a playful mix of colors and shapes to a sophisticated, surreal design.

Me posting on a sculpture in the Miami Design District.

3 Days in Miami

I recommend spending at least three days in Miami. This will give you more time to get a feel for the city and will allow your trip to be planned over a long weekend. For a 3-day Miami itinerary, simply follow the 2-day itinerary above and add in the additional day below.

Day 3: Explore the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens and Downtown Miami

On day 3 in Miami, you’ll get a glimpse of the rich and famous lifestyle by exploring the beautiful Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, sailing around Millionaire’s Row, and admiring the incredible Miami skyline.

Vizcaya Museum & Gardens

The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is one of the top museums in Miami. It was once an elaborate villa, which was designed with Italian Renaissance and Mediterranean influences.

The Vizcaya Villa was originally built in 1916 by James Deering, who was a wealthy businessman. Today, the waterfront home has been converted into a museum that holds over 2,500 pieces of art and furnishings. It also features 10 acres of beautifully manicured gardens that resemble the famous gardens of Versailles in France.

Bayside Marketplace

If you want to do some shopping, Bayside Marketplace is a perfect addition to your Miami itinerary. Bayside Marketplace is a two-story open-air shopping center that is located in the downtown part of Miami on the banks of Biscayne Bay.

There are around 70 shops and 30 restaurants in Bayside Marketplace, so it is great for some shopping and dinner downtown. The area also has several attractions like boat cruises and the Skywheels Miami Observation Wheel.

Take a Boat Cruise along Millionaire’s Row

This popular Boat Cruise along Millionaire’s Row will take you past some of the celebrity mansions in Miami, like Gloria Estefan’s and Shaquille O’Neal’s. Celebrity homes aside, this boat cruise is the best way to take in the beautiful Miami skyline.

This boat cruise leaves from Bayside Marketplace and offers both afternoon and evening trips, so it is easy to hop on the cruise before or after your shopping spree at the marketplace.

If you prefer a private experience or with a group of six or less, you may consider booking a 2-hour private boat rental . The itinerary is fully customizable and the captain is U.S. Coast Guard certified. This may be a more enjoyable (and potentially more affordable) way to see Millionaire’s Row and enjoy Biscayne Bay on your trip to Miami.

A house on Millionaire's Row in Miami.

4 Days in Miami

Spending 4 days in Miami will allow you to make the most of your long weekend and see some surrounding areas on day trips from Miami. For a 4-day in Miami itinerary, simply add the additional day below.

Day 4: Take a Day Trip from Miami

With a 4-day Miami itinerary, you have time to explore the city and take a day trip. There are a few day trip options from Miami, but the most popular one is going to the Everglades, which is Florida’s largest National Park.

Day Trip Option #1: The Everglades

Going to the Everglades is an ideal day trip from Miami for nature enthusiasts. By heading into the Everglades National Park, you’ll get to experience Florida’s wildlife up close and hopefully observe alligators, crocodiles, snakes, and more in their natural habitat.  This Tour of the Everglades includes roundtrip transportation from Miami, an educational alligator show, and a ride through the swampy wetlands on the famous airboats.

Day Trip Option #2: Key West

Key West, known worldwide for its pastel-colored conch houses and vibrant culture, is a must-visit destination in Southern Florida. It was once home to Ernest Hemingway and today is a colorful and lively island town.

Key West is part of the Florida Keys, which are a series of islands connected to mainland Florida by the famous Seven Mile Bridge. When visiting Key West, don’t miss out on a visit to the Southernmost Point, which marks the southernmost spot in the continental U.S.   This Tour of Key West from Miami includes a variety of customizable options and is a great way to see the island in only one day. You can choose between a roundtrip transfer with free time, a one-way transfer, or a roundtrip transfer with activities (such as snorkeling ). While a trip to Key West is a long day trip, many tourists find it worth it to see this unique island.

Day Trip Option #3: Sailing Biscayne Bay

For a relaxing, yet exciting day trip – this Sailing Tour of Biscayne Bay is the perfect addition to your Miami itinerary. Biscayne Bay features crystal-clear waters, sandbars, islets, and mangroves and is an incredible place to go sailing. It is also home to diverse wildlife, such as dolphins and manatees.

On this sailing tour, you’ll enjoy a relaxing and comfortable boat ride on a private vessel. You’ll get to go swimming and snorkeling in the warm waters of Biscayne Bay, as well as enjoy the scenic views from the sailboat.

5 Days in Miami Itinerary

Looking to stay in Miami for longer than a weekend? This 5-day Miami itinerary is the perfect way to experience the most of the city and surrounding areas.

This itinerary is a bit more relaxed than the weekend itinerary options since having 5 days in Miami gives you more time to enjoy everything the city has to offer at a slower pace.

The family enjoying a beautiful, sunny day on Miami Beach.

Day 1: Arrive and Explore Little Havana

After arriving in Miami, head straight to one of the best spots in Miami for food and culture: Little Havana.

Little Havana is the heart of Cuban culture in Miami and is a must-visit spot when visiting the city. Calle Ocho (8th Street in English) is the main street of Little Havana and is a great spot to start your day of exploring. When in Little Havana, make sure to try the Cuban coffee and the authentic Cuban food.

The best way to experience Little Havana is by taking this Little Havana Food and Walking Tour . The tour is led by a local guide, who will show you all the best places in the neighborhood (including a cigar factory!). You’ll also get to try delicious and authentic Cuban food, an unbeatable experience on your Miami itinerary.

Day 2: Street Art and Downtown Miami

For day 2 on your 5-day Miami itinerary, you’ll explore more of the city, including the downtown area, Brickell, and Wynwood.

In the morning, head to the Wynwood neighborhood, which is famous in Miami for its street art murals. You can wander this area on your own or take this Wynwood Walls Guided Tour with a local artist who will show you the most unique murals and tell you more about the artistic genius behind them.

Next, head downtown and check out the Bayside Marketplace. This trendy shopping spot has plenty of shops and restaurants to keep you entertained during your visit. There are also exciting activities such as the Skyviews Miami Observation Wheel or a Boat Cruise and a tour of celebrity homes in Miami.

Brickell is located next to downtown Miami and the Bayside Marketplace. Don’t miss out on a visit to the beautiful waterfront park, Maurice A. Ferre Park. This 30 acre park boasts the longest bayfront walk in Miami.

The area also has some great nightlife options, such as the E11EVEN Miami Nightclub, and local bars like Lost Boy, The Corner, and Mama Tried.

Day 3: Beach Day at Miami Beach

On day 3, you’ll have a chance to explore the iconic Miami Beach neighborhood and spend time relaxing on Miami’s famous beaches.

South Beach

South Beach is the most famous of the Miami beaches and has a lively and entertaining atmosphere. This is the first stop on most tourists’ Miami itineraries. The beach has colorful, Art Deco-style lifeguard stands which make the perfect backdrop for photos.

While visiting South Beach, make your way down to South Pointe Park Pier or Lummus Park for some time in the shade. Don’t forget to stroll down Ocean Drive to admire the unique Art Deco buildings! If you’ve had enough beach time, you can also take an Art Deco Walking Tour or try some delicious food on this South Beach Food Tour .

Twin boys hanging out on Miami Beach

North Beach

For a more relaxed and family-trip -friendly atmosphere, head to North Beach. North Beach is a beautiful sandy beach that is less crowded than South Beach. It’s a popular spot for families or anyone looking for a laid-back beach atmosphere rather than the party atmosphere of South Beach.

Along North Beach, you’ll find North Beach Oceanside Park which is a great place to relax in the shade. The park also has a playground, picnic pavilions, and a dog area, so there is plenty to do there for everyone. If you are looking for a fun water activity during your beach day, check out this Kayak Tour of North Beach . You’ll get to explore the natural beauty of North Beach as you kayak through mangroves and clear waters.

Nightlife in Miami Beach

Miami is known for its nightlife, and the South Beach neighborhood of Miami Beach has tons of it. Nightlife in South Beach includes local bars like Ted’s Hideaway and Lost Weekend, as well as nightclubs like LIV or Mango’s.

Day 4: Day Trip to the Everglades

Day 4 on this 5-day Miami itinerary will take you out of the city and into the Everglades – Florida’s largest and most popular national park.

Take a Tour to Everglades National Park

Start your day bright and early by heading to Everglades National Park – home to some of Florida’s most incredible wildlife and natural beauty. Visiting the Everglades during your 5 days in Miami is sure to be an unforgettable experience.

The best way to experience the Everglades is by airboat. These boats will take you through the swampy areas filled with alligators, crocodiles, birds, fish, exotic snakes, and more.

Since you are based in Miami, I highly recommend taking this Everglades Tour from Miami which includes roundtrip transportation, as well as an airboat ride, and an alligator show. The tour lasts around 4-5 hours, including transportation, but the total duration depends on traffic conditions.

If you have a rental car, you could also drive to Everglades National Park and book this Everglades Airboat Tour with a local guide. Please note that, once you arrive at the Everglades, you will need to pay the $30 vehicle admission charge.

Day 5: Visit the Vizcaya Museum and Coral Gables

Coral Gables is a beautiful suburb of Miami and is known for its tree-lined boulevards and historical sites, such as the famous Biltmore Hotel and the Venetian Pool. Not far from Coral Gables is the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, which is one of the most popular museums in Miami.

Start the morning off with a visit to the historic Vizcaya Museum, which was originally built as an Italian-style villa in the early 1900s. You’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to Europe as you explore the beautiful interior, filled with artwork and antique furniture. Make sure to also check out the vast and beautifully manicured gardens.

Coral Gables & the Venetian Pool

In the afternoon, spend time exploring the lovely Coral Gables neighborhood. It’s a great place to grab lunch and wander the beautiful streets.

A highlight of Coral Gables is the historic Venetian pool – a public swimming pool that first opened in 1924. The pool consists of spring water from an underground aquifer and has two waterfalls and cave-like grottos.

The buildings around the pool are reminiscent of old-world Italy and give off a classy, yet relaxed vibe. It is the perfect place to spend a warm, sunny afternoon in Miami.

Things to do in Miami with Kids

Many people ask me if there are things to do in Miami with kids. I’ve been bringing my kids to Miami since they were infants, and we always find fun and unique things to do as a family in Miami! Don’t forget to pack all the best toddler beach essentials if your kids love the beach as much as mine do.

Miami Children’s Museum

Only a short 15-minute drive from Miami Beach, the Miami Children’s Museum is a hit with young children and toddlers. My boys always have a blast! The museum’s design represents elements of earth, wind, water, and fire, making the museum itself a piece of art and adding to the overall visitor experience.

The boys in front of the Miami Children's Museum – the perfect addition to any Miami itinerary with kids.

Jungle Island

Located across the street (interstate) from Miami Children’s Museum, a visit to Jungle Island is a fantastic thing to do in Miami for families. It’s an eco-adventure park that combines the beauty of Miami’s tropical landscape with a diverse collection of over 450 animals from around the globe, including a 900-pound liger and twin orangutans, Peanut and Pumpkin.

There are interactive experiences like Sloth, Lemur, and Flamingo encounters, where you and your children can experience these amazing creatures up close. For those seeking more adventure, Jungle Island also features attractions like NEOSplash, a water park with fun rides and slides, and SkyWire, Miami’s first immersive zip line course.

The Miami Zoo

The Miami Zoo is the largest zoo in Florida and has plenty of unique animal exhibits to check out with your kids. It’s located about a 45-minute drive south of Miami, but you can easily visit if you have a rental car.

Where to Stay in Miami

Miami is a massive city with tons of great choices for accommodation. However, for a short stay in Miami, I highly recommend staying in the Miami Beach area since it’s close to many of the best things to do, restaurants, nightlife, and the best beaches. Below are a few of the best hotels in the Miami Beach area.

📍 Budget-Friendly Option: Urbanica Fifth

This hotel is located in Miami Beach and is only a 5-7 minute walk to the beach. The rooms are comfortable and clean, and some even have a balcony. Amenities include free bikes, an outdoor swimming pool, and an on-site bar and restaurant.

📍 Mid-Range Option: Moxy Miami South Beach

Located only a short, 3-minute walk to South Beach, this 4-star hotel is right in the action of South Beach. It is perfect for those looking to have a good time in Miami!

The hotel has not one, but two rooftop pools and multiple restaurants. It’s known for its upbeat vibe and lounge atmosphere with multiple activities planned for guests throughout the week.

📍 Luxury Option: 1 Hotel South Beach

This 5-star hotel is an incredible choice for a luxury stay in Miami. 1 Hotel South Beach is an oceanfront property with a private beach, on-site restaurant, spa and fitness center, kids club, and four different swimming pools.

One of the swimming pools is a rooftop infinity pool that is an adults-only space, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the views.

The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated. Most rooms are studio-style and include a living space, kitchen, and balcony with either city or ocean views.

Getting Around Miami

There are a few ways to get around Miami, including renting a car, using public transportation, or ordering taxis and rideshare services like Uber/Lyft. Below, you’ll find details on all the ways to get around Miami during your trip.

My husband on the street in South Beach at night.

Renting a Car in Miami

Renting a car gives you a lot of freedom and flexibility to go wherever (and whenever) you want in Miami. It is a good option for longer stays or if you plan to visit sites on your own that are further away from the downtown and beach areas.

One thing to consider before renting a car in Miami is that parking can be limited. At most hotels, parking is available for an extra cost. Additionally, it may be difficult to find parking in busy places like Miami Beach. If you rent a car, I recommend downloading the ParkMe Miami Beach App, which will show you available spots.

If you took a road trip to Miami from Orlando (like we did!), then you’ll already have your own car to get around Miami!

Lyft or Uber in Miami

Lyft and Uber are rideshare services available in Miami that make getting around the city convenient and easy. While similar to taking a taxi, Uber in Miami is typically much cheaper.

In general, Uber and Lyft are safe and reliable ways to get around in Miami. They are especially good options for getting back to your hotel late at night or for getting to and from the airport without having to worry about luggage on public transportation.

Taxis in Miami

Taxis are another good transportation option in Miami. Taxis tend to be more expensive than rideshare services, but taking an official taxi allows you to take advantage of the inside lane at Miami Airport for pick-ups and drop-offs. This can be useful when traffic is heavy and you are in a rush to get to or from the airport.

Public Transportation in Miami

Miami has three main modes of public transportation: the Metrorail, Metromover, and Metrobus. These three options can take you to a variety of places in Miami, including the airport, downtown area, Miami Beach, and other main sites. Taking public transportation is also by far the most affordable way to get around Miami.

Miami Metrorail

The Miami Metrorail is a 25-mile rail system that can get you quickly to places like downtown, Kendall, and the Miami Airport. Metrorail fares start at $2.25, making it an affordable way to get around Miami.

Miami Metromover

If you are in the downtown area, the Metromover is an excellent transportation option. Service runs around Downtown Miami and Brickell and is 100% free!

Miami Metrobus

The Metrobus service has 90 different routes and connects areas outside of downtown Miami such as Miami Beach, Key Biscayne, and Homestead. Bus tickets start at $2.25, and there is also an express bus called the Miami Beach Bus 150 that runs directly between the Miami Airport and Miami Beach.

Trolleys in Miami

Last but not least, some of the neighborhoods in Miami offer free trolley services. These trolleys are fun and free ways to get around the smaller areas of Miami. Neighborhoods that offer trolley services include Miami Beach, the City of Miami, Coral Gables, Doral, and Miami Gardens.

The Best Restaurants in Miami

There are many great places to eat in Miami. Below you’ll find some highly-rated restaurants that are worth trying during your trip. If you are a foodie, I highly recommend taking a Miami Food Tour to experience the best of the city’s culinary scene.

  • Havana 1957 : Trying Cuban food is a must when visiting Miami, and Havana 1957 is a great place to try the best authentic Cuban dishes. They have four different locations in the Miami Beach area, making it a very convenient stop on your Miami itinerary.
  • Joe’s Stone Crab Restaurant : Fresh seafood is a Florida specialty, and Joe’s Stone Crab is an excellent restaurant in Miami for a seafood dinner. This Miami Beach restaurant has been open since 1913 and is most famous for its Florida Stone Crab.
  • The Local House : The Local House in Miami Beach is the perfect place to go for brunch in Miami. They also offer a variety of seafood-based dinner options and a happy hour on weekdays.
  • Yardbird Table & Bar : Located in South Beach, Yardbird Table & Bar offers delicious Southern comfort foods and a full bourbon bar.

A tasty meal in Miami. Trying some of the best restaurants in the city is a must on any Miami itinerary.

What to Pack for Miami

Miami is a tropical destination that stays warm most of the year, so of course you will want to pack all of your warm weather and beach clothes. Below you’ll find a short list of essentials to bring on a trip to Miami .

  • Waterproof phone bag

When to Visit Miami

Miami is a year-round destination, but certain times of the year are better to visit than others. Miami remains warm all year, but summertime can be especially hot and humid and tends to bring frequent afternoon rain showers.

Winter is an ideal time to visit Miami, especially if you live in a cold area (like us in Milwaukee ) and are looking for a weekend escape to some sunny weather. Weather in Miami averages around 63° to 76°F and it’s typically dry and sunny during winter.

Miami is a popular destination for spring breakers during March, which can lead to larger crowds and higher prices. However, the weather is perfect at this time of year, averaging between 67° to 83°F with plenty of sunshine. To avoid the spring break crowds, try going in late April or early May instead of March.

One thing to be aware of is that Miami can be affected by the hurricane season which runs from June-November. However, most major hurricanes occur in late August-September. In general, Miami only has around a 16% chance each year of being hit by a major hurricane.

Hurricane season is the worst time to visit Miami, with August, September, and October being the busiest months.

The risk of hurricanes and tropical storms in the tropics increases from May to November, while they can occur at any time. In September 2017, Hurricane Irma made a direct strike on Miami, leaving behind massive flooding and devastation.

According to some reports, the 2022 hurricane season had a total of 14 named storms, eight of which developed into hurricanes. 2 became major hurricanes, which are classified as having winds of 111 mph or greater.

Worst time to visit Miami is when there is Hurricane

The Miami region experiences a hurricane once every 1.97 years, according to data from the National Hurricane Center. Every five years, a hurricane usually hits Miami.

On average, a major storm occurs once every 12 years. The average wind speed is 110 mph.

The duration of a hurricane can range from a few hours to many weeks as it moves north over the Atlantic.

Things You Should Know Before Visiting Miami

It could be difficult to get about in a city with neon-lit taco booths, martini roofs over seedy backyard pubs, and Art Deco stores next to drab buildings.

Just as it's difficult to visit Paris and ignore the Eiffel Tower, it's also impossible to visit Miami and ignore the beach.

However, there is something you should be aware of before visiting one of Miami's numerous beaches: Miamians have a few non-negotiable rules that they expect everyone to follow by when it comes to time spent on the sand.

Things You Should Know Before Visiting Miami

First, don't take off any of your bathing suit unless you're at a nudist beach (there are locations, like the well-known Haulover Beach, designated just for that). Second, respect other people's sunbathing places.

You have lots of space to choose a spot on Miami's beaches due to their length and width. Third, drinking in public places is prohibited in Miami.

Avoid doing it at the beach, even if it's just one beer. Last but not least, it goes without saying that Miami's beach-goers will catch wind of your rubbish if you leave it behind.

Public Transport In Miami

Miami possesses Florida's greatest transit network, but alas, using it is neither easy nor convenient.

Buses are clean and air-conditioned, although they regularly run late and struggle through highly crowded routes. The Miami Trolley is a pleasant and cost-free way to go around the city, despite only operating in certain places;

Metromover and Metrorail lines that are restricted both functions similarly. The primary mode of transportation in this region is Uber or Freebee, a free shuttle service that covers Miami Beach, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, Key Biscayne, Downtown, Brickell, and Wynwood. Users of the iPhone and Android devices may download both of these programs.

Public Transport In Miami is primarly boat

Although Miami is famed for its traffic, its briskly moving residents are possibly more well-known. You should assume that everyone who is driving or walking about in a car is hurried.

Miami residents typically dislike having to stop for pedestrians, even when they are at a crossing and perfectly within their rights.

Thus, before crossing any road in the city, regardless of whether you have the right-of-way, always look both ways. Drive slowly and expect to get honked at or cut off if you are approaching the speed limit.

What activities are available in Miami?

Miami offers outdoor adventurers an array of exciting opportunities, both in the water and on land. Kayak, canoe or stand-up paddle board at Oleta River State Park the Deering Estate or Crandon Park.

What things are Miami famous for?

Miami is famous for its sunny weather, pristine beaches, non-stop nightlife, Hispanic influence, and Art Deco architecture.

Is Miami worth visiting?

Miami is worth visiting for its superb beaches, jaw-dropping skyline, top-notch hotels, and the gorgeous Everglades National Park

Before you make your first trip down to "The 305," make sure you're aware of all there is to see, eat, drink and do. Whether you want to relax at a beachfront resort or take in the city's rich cultural and culinary experiences, you won't be disappointed in Miami.

How to get to Miami

Getting to Miami is easy. Although airline route networks have been significantly altered because of the coronavirus pandemic , Miami International Airport (MIA) is one of American Airlines' largest and busiest hubs, offering lots of connecting flights to the Caribbean and Latin America. Most midsize and large cities across the nation have nonstop service to MIA , making a trip to this electric city quick and easy for many.

And, if you strike out on flights into MIA , Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is about 30 miles north of South Beach and is perhaps even better located for reaching resorts like Aventura and Bal Harbour on the northern edges of the Miami metro area.

Getting around

Once you're in Miami, you'll want to get around by car. The area is sprawling and although the city has a public-transit system, it isn't extensive or the most convenient option for visitors. A car rental would be a great option for anyone who plans to do extensive exploration of the region, while Uber or other ride-hailing services will be more than sufficient to transport you from your resort to dinner and back.

Where to eat and drink in Miami

Over the years, Miami has gained a reputation for being one of the best places in the U.S. to eat, thanks to the rich combination of restaurants that have become local institutions, the recent trend of buzzy, high-end dining spots, and a strong influence from Latin America -- particularly Cuba .

Best restaurants in Miami

There's no way you'll get around to sampling all the phenomenal food Miami has to offer in one trip, so here are some of the highlights that you can't miss on your first trip.

One of the city's most venerable restaurants, Joe's Stone Crab. Since 1952, it has been attracting flocks of diners eager to taste the restaurant's famous -- you guessed it -- stone crab. They're especially delicious when they're in peak season between October and May. Located in South Beach, this Miami standby doesn't take reservations, so be prepared to arrive early and wait quite a while for a table. And whatever you do, save room for key lime pie.

In Miami's Little Havana neighborhood, on the famous Calle Ocho, Sanguich de Miami serves up traditional Cuban sandwiches with modern twists. For your first trip, though, you should stick to the classic Cubano sandwich, made with pork, spiced ham, Swiss cheese and mustard on toasty Cuban bread. Don't forget to indulge in a batido , a rich milkshake that comes in multiple flavors.

Wynwood is Miami's hippest neighborhood, with tons of restaurants, cafes and bars. One of my favorites in the area is Kyu, a restaurant featuring Asian-inspired dishes cooked on a wood-fired grill and focused on sustainability and green practices. Opt for dishes like the crispy pork belly buns, a whole roasted cauliflower with goat cheese, shishito-herb vinaigrette, myoga and shiso and baby bok choy with toasted garlic, chili and lemon.

Greek cuisine is big in this seaside city, and one of the best options in town is Mandolin Aegean Bistro in the Miami Design District. I've visited this restaurant many times during visits to the city, and I recommend sitting outside and ordering the grilled octopus to share with your group, and then enjoy kebabs of lamb, chicken and beef along with a bottle or two of crisp Mediterranean wine.

Miami is a city in which to see and be seen, and there are perhaps no better places to do that than at any one of the city's high-end and trendy Japanese restaurants. There's no shortage of places to get high-priced sushi in the city, but Makoto, located in the Shops at Bal Harbour, one of the city's most affluent areas, stands out. Expect a full menu of raw fish dishes, but Makoto offers more to diners, too, with its charcoal robata, which churns out Japanese barbecue-style dishes to hungry diners every night.

Best bars in Miami

Miami has a wide range of drinking establishments for every type of vibe you could want on a given night -- or day, from rooftop hangouts to laid-back beachside watering holes, you won't lack for places to get a cold drink. Here are some "greatest hits" for a first trip to Miami.

Just north of Downtown Miami, Esotico is a paradise for anyone who loves tiki bars and Polynesian culture. Covered in tropical flora, this drinking spot serves up rum-based Polynesian cocktails that will instantly transport you to the South Pacific.

Escotico. (Photo courtesy of Escotico/Facebook)

The Broken Shaker at the Freehand Hotel in Miami Beach is an ideal place to begin any evening out in Miami, and I make sure to stop by for a drink or two every time I'm in town. Most of the bar is outside in a lushly landscaped courtyard that even features a pool that guests can sit around while they enjoy cocktails. This laid-back spot's outdoor emphasis suits balmy Miami evenings perfectly.

One of the last true dive bars in Miami Beach, Mac's Club Deuce, is a guaranteed good time. Featuring old-time classics like a jukebox, pool tables and terrible lighting, it's a great place to change up the pace from the typical nightclub-heavy nightlife scene in Miami.

What to see and do in Miami

Many people -- including myself on occasion -- choose to spend a Miami vacation by spending the whole day at the pool or beach and only venturing from the hotel to go to dinner in the evening. That's a totally acceptable way to vacation in South Florida. But Miami has other things to do and see.

One of the most culturally vibrant cities in the country, Miami is full of museums, cultural institutions, sporting events and more that can easily fill your days.

One of the hottest spots in the city is what's known as the Wynwood Walls, in the Wynwood district. The Walls are a display of public art created several years ago when this area of the city began its transformation from a zone of derelict warehouses to one of the city's trendiest districts. Today, the Walls and their murals attract artists from all over the world eager to leave their mark on the city.

One of Miami's most iconic attractions is the Art Deco Historic District found in South Beach. The district has the largest concentration of Art Deco buildings in the U.S. — including the famed Versace Mansion — and transports visitors back to the heyday of Miami's glamour. The pastel-colored buildings lining the beach come alive at night with their neon signs beckoning passersby to stop in for a drink or meal.

Another area that you won't want to miss is the city's Little Havana neighborhood, the center of Miami's strong Cuban heritage. Stroll down the famous Calle Ocho and pick up a case of Cuban cigars, enjoy a cafecito which is a very potent -- and sweet -- espresso drink and sample the numerous culinary delights that are abundant in the neighborhood.

If you're looking to escape the city for a day and get out into nature, look no further than Everglades National Park, which is the third-largest national park in the continental United States and the largest tropical wilderness in the nation at over 1.5 million acres. There's plenty to keep you busy on a visit to the park, with miles of trails, campgrounds, waterways for boating and even observation areas for stunning dark skies at night.

Florida is synonymous with golf, and if you're a fan of the sport, you can't go wrong in Miami. The area is home to more than 20 courses ranging from public courses such as the Miami Beach Golf Club to high-end resort courses like the duo at the JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa. Whichever route you choose, you'll be (likely) blessed with picture-perfect weather and beautifully maintained fairways.

For some fun for the whole family, head to the Miami Seaquarium in Key Biscayne, south of the city. The kids will love meeting and learning about all the marine animals including turtles, seals and dolphins, and it's a perfect activity for a rainy day or to get out of the blazing summer sun. Book your visit online for the best prices.

For a heavy dose of culture, visit the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), which is the city's preeminent art museum. Set in a stunning building next to Biscayne Bay, the museum was designed by the renowned architecture firm, Herzog & de Meuron. It provides a fitting home for international modern and contemporary art, presented from the viewpoint of U.S. Latino people, as well as those from the African diaspora, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Where to stay in Miami

Budget-friendly.

Located in the heart of South Beach just blocks from the beach, The Gates Hotel South Beach - A DoubleTree Hotel is a great option for travelers on a budget. With rooms from around $170 or 50,000 Hilton Honors points per night, you'll be paying significantly less than other properties in the area -- especially those right on the beach. Expect an outdoor pool, spa services and, of course, the famous DoubleTree cookies to help enhance your Miami vacation.

Great value on points

One of Hyatt's few beachfront hotels in Miami, the Confidante Miami Beach packs a big punch at a great price -- especially when you're paying with points. As a Category 4 property in the World of Hyatt program , an award night will run you just 15,000 points. (Or, you can use a Category 1-4 award-night certificate that you get on the anniversary of the World of Hyatt Credit Card.) And, Hyatt points are easy to earn, since the program is a 1:1 transfer partner with Chase Ultimate Rewards . Once you're there, you'll delight in the 1940s-era property complete with three dining and drinking outposts, two heated pools, a fitness center, spa and, of course, a prime oceanfront location.

For refined oceanfront luxury, look no further than The St. Regis Bal Harbour . Appropriately located in Miami's well-heeled Bal Harbour neighborhood, The St. Regis makes a big impression on the beach. Huge and luxuriously appointed guest rooms and the signature St. Regis butler service makes this five-star property stand out. And with three restaurants, two resort pools, a top-notch Remède spa, expansive private beach and more on offer, you won't even have to leave the property during your stay. This is a top-tier Category 8 Marriott Bonvoy hotel, so a free night will cost you 70,000 points for an off-peak night, 85,000 for a standard night and 100,000 for a peak night.

Miami has so much to offer to every type of traveler, so you must prepare for your first trip so you don't waste valuable time once your vacation has started. Use these TPG recommendations and you can feel confident that you'll get a taste of the city, but know that you'll have to schedule several return trips before you can even begin to scratch the surface. After you visit once, there's no doubt you'll want to return.

Best Time to Visit Miami—High Season (November Through March)

Many people think summer is the busiest time in Miami. However, the winter and early spring also see plenty of tourist traffic. And given the gorgeous weather at this time, it’s easy to see why.

Although the beginning months of high seasons are a little crowded in Miami, February and March see fewer visitors. It’s a great time to go for great weather and fewer crowds.

Miami Weather

Miami has warm weather all year. You will never have to worry about cold days or snow when booking your stay in Miami. However, you will have to worry about sweltering heat during some seasons of the year, as well as hurricanes.

Hurricane season is officially from June to November. Though, the peak is usually from mid-August to late October. So, you’ll want to be aware of that as well.

It’s a good idea to consider travel insurance just in case, particularly during this time. Check out Insure My Trip , as you can get a lot of quotes at one time!

May through August in Miami is notorious for hot and humid days. Some afternoons, you’ll even find the heat index is over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (around 38°C) with over 90% humidity. If your main reason to visit Miami is to spend time in the sun or the water, these hot months could be perfect for you.

Miami has an endless array of companies that can take you kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, and scuba diving. If you have your own equipment, you can also bring it right down to the beach.

If the hot weather is not your thing or you’re traveling with children or older parents, the summer months in Miami could be less than ideal. In that case, you’ll want to visit in the winter months, late fall, and early spring.

For cooler and more moderate temperatures, visit Miami between November and March. It doesn’t rain as much during this season, so you can also spend plenty of time outdoors and not worry about the infamous summer storms and hurricanes that go through Miami.

Prices in Miami

Since Miami is a huge tourist destination, hotel and flight prices soar in the summer months. Miami is also a popular spring break hotspot, so you might want to check the calendar of the local colleges and universities to make sure you don’t get stuck in the city at the same time as these massive crowds.

Much like other American cities, Miami also gets busy during the holiday season. From late November through early January, you’ll see hotel prices rise. It’s a great time to visit weather-wise, but it’ll cost you.

The winter months are also a popular time for people up north to escape the snow. When the “snowbirds” are in town, you might find lodging choices extra crowded and more expensive, especially around Christmas and New Year.

Why You Should Visit Miami

When you think of Miami, you probably think of the white-sand beaches, the amazing nightlife, and the endless dining opportunities. Miami has endless things to do, including indoor and outdoor activities for every season.

Visiting Miami gives you a chance to have a coastal beach vacation and explore a big city all in the same destination. One of the best things about Miami is all the different cultures and vibrant pockets of cultural activities throughout the city.

You can explore the Caribbean scene and its incredible cuisine or head to the Latin areas and listen to live music and go dancing. While your exact Miami itinerary will depend on the month you visit, these places are a must-see no matter when you visit.

  • Little Havana. Miami is known for its amazing Cuban cultural hub called Little Havana. It’s filled with bakeries and restaurants where you can grab a café con leche, a guava pastry, or a traditional Cuban sandwich.
  • Miami Beach. Spending time at Miami Beach is a must. The water is always warm and gentle. So it’s perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and paddleboarding.

6. The Best Time to Visit Miam1

There is really never a bad time to visit Florida because it is hot and sunny for most of the year. However, use this information to determine the ideal season for a trip to Miami and to determine the best time to visit!

Miami is best visited in the spring, from about mid-February to May. Hurricane season hasn’t yet begun, the temperature is warm, and summer’s peak humidity hasn’t quite set in yet. A smaller crowd is expected and prices will have decreased as the high season draws to a close. Additionally, the water is warm, allowing you to go to the beach and take advantage of all Florida has to offer.

Table of Contents

Weather in Miami

Many individuals make the error of assuming that since there is only one long summer season, it doesn’t matter when they visit Miami. But this is untrue. There are still seasons with very different personalities, even though the majority of the year is warm to hot and temperatures rarely fall below the high 50s F1. For instance, summer in Miami is excruciatingly hot, humid, and rainy. In the summer, it pours almost daily. The average duration of a storm is between 15 and 60 minutes, after which the sun comes out and the humidity level rises.

Expect some rain during your time in the south if you’re traveling in the summer. Storms with thunder and lightning also occur frequently.

When is the Weather Best in Miami?

The summer months in Florida can be incredibly hot and muggy. Visit Miami from November to April to avoid the steam bath every time you step outside. Highs and lows are moderately warm (around 80 and 60 degrees, respectively), and there is little rain. The rainy season lasts from May to November, and if you visit between June and November, you’ll be square in the middle of hurricane season.

Miami’s busy season is winter, even though the weather is ideal. Choose the shoulder season, which runs from February to April, to avoid the tourist crush. During shoulder season, you’ll find the lowest rates and the fewest tourists, with the exception of spring break, when the city is packed with partygoers. Of course, there are even fewer visitors in the summer if you can handle the heat and humidity (as well as the possibility of rain).

Hurricane Season in Florida

Hurricane season in Florida lasts from June through the end of November. Being ready is crucial, especially if you’re traveling from a remote area and there isn’t a guarantee that any hurricanes will occur. Of course, this usually doesn’t stop many people from traveling; in fact, the summer is one of Florida’s busiest travel seasons because families can take longer vacations with the kids out of school. However, it is advised to get travel insurance just in case if you are planning a trip during hurricane season.

Prices During High Season

Florida experiences its peak travel period from the end of November to the middle of April, especially during the holiday season. Expect large crowds and higher prices, from snowbirds to students to anyone looking to escape the snow. As the season approaches, flights and hotels frequently sell out quickly, and rates can increase significantly.

There are advantages to traveling during the summer, though. For instance, every palm tree in Miami is covered in sparkling lights from around Thanksgiving until New Year’s, adding an atmosphere that isn’t typically present at other times of the year. Although prices may be generally higher, there are also many more sales and deals available, so keep an eye out for those.

Winter: December, January, February

Miami’s peak season is currently underway for good reason. Typically, the temperature is in the high seventies with little to no humidity. Even though there may be a few more people on the beaches at this time of year, there is still space for everyone to enjoy the seaside due to the beaches’ prime location. This time of year, hotels are generally a little more expensive, so reserve your room in advance.

Events to Check out:

  • At the end of January or the start of February each year, the Miami Marathon takes place. The 2003-founded race draws both professional and amateur runners of every background from around the world.
  • An annual exhibition of modern and contemporary art, known as Art Basel, is held in South Beach the first week of December. It’s safe to say that a lot of people attend the show, including royalty and famous people. Many hotels, bars, and clubs will host events, parties, and the like during Art Basel week; some are public and some are not. You should prepare for more visitors and traffic if you go during the show’s week.

Why Visit Miami in the Winter?

Miami visitors prefer to travel during the winter, which is Miami’s peak season. Temperatures are holding steady in the 70s F, there is nonstop sunshine, little rain, and low humidity. Or to put it another way, ideal beach conditions!

The crowds are a result of the beautiful weather. From November to February, Miami is busy as people flee their chilly hometowns in search of some winter sun. Thanksgiving spent in boardshorts and Christmas with decorated palm trees attract tourists looking for novelty.

Miami’s busy season, which coincides with the holiday season, means there are many events and activities to enjoy. What if there isn’t a planned event, which is extremely unlikely? The clubs in Miami will certainly keep you entertained.

The prices are competitive to meet the high demand even though winter is a fun-filled and festive season. Since things sell out quickly, you’ll need to compare prices and make your reservations as soon as possible.

Spring: March, April, May

Miami is unquestionably at its most picturesque in the spring. With highs in the 80s, the weather is warmer than winter despite not yet experiencing the full effects of summer’s humidity. However, not enough rain will prevent you from traveling. The best time of year to enjoy sunset cocktails on the beach or rooftop happy hours. Those people’s only drawback, then? During spring break, when college students are usually on vacation, the city usually becomes overrun with them, bars and clubs quickly fill up. Making reservations in Miami is a smart idea year-round, but spring is particularly the time to do so.

  • The Miami Open, one of the top tennis tournaments, happens every year at the end of March and into April.
  • Annual EDM festival Ultra Music Festival is held over the final weekend of March. A younger crowd that enjoys partying attends the three-day concert. Past performers have included DeadMau5, Tiesto, Afrojack, David Guetta, and David.
  • Annually, Miami Beach Gay Pride is held on a range of dates. What began as a modest local celebration has grown into one of the biggest gay pride festivals in the nation.2 The multi-day event features a parade, block party, live music, and a ton of LGBT-friendly vendors.

6. The Best Time to Visit Miam2

Why Visit Miami in the Spring

Miami is at its most beautiful in the spring. The ideal weather period runs from March through May. With temperatures that stay in the high 70s to mid 80s and low humidity, it’s warm without being oppressively hot.

With the exception of a few lingering spring breakers, the busy season starts to slow down in late March, and prices start to fall.

Miami is ideal to visit in the spring. Spring is perfect for beach days, rooftop cocktails, and dining outdoors in Miami . Additionally, April and May are Miami Attraction & Museum Months, offering BOGO offers and entry discounts.

Miami’s springtime is also ideal for nature lovers. The Everglades are alive with springtime wildlife, plants, and migratory birds. It’s the ideal time to head to Shark Valley and explore the natural wonders outside the city.

Spring break in Miami is the only exception. Miami and Miami Beach frequently attract a large college crowd. There are pool parties, outdoor activities , and celebrity performances during Miami Music Week.

Whether you participate or not, we advise making reservations for the Miami restaurants, which are understandably busier during Spring Break weeks, and making lodging reservations early.

Summer: June, July, August

Miami summers can be summed up in one word: hot. High 90s temperatures are possible, and rain is common. This is still one of the most popular times to visit the city, despite the mosquitoes, frizzy hair, and constant perspiration. The summer months in Miami are undoubtedly the best because of the perfect waves and warm water. Even on cloudy days, it’s easy to get sunburned, so you should always wear sunscreen and bug spray in the summer. It’s also peak mosquito season, so try to avoid being outside in the early evening or right after a rainstorm when mosquitoes are most active.

  • A Fashion Week event called Swim Week happens in July. Top designers’ swimwear fashion shows, pool parties, happy hours, and a ton of pop-up stores are all part of the week’s events. This week, South Beach should be full of models jogging around.
  • Visit the city during Miami Spice if you’re a foodie or simply enjoy eating. Participating restaurants throughout the city offer three-course meals for less than normal prices ($28 for lunch/brunch and $42 for dinner). It’s a great opportunity to eat at restaurants you ordinarily would never consider visiting. It’s highly advised that you make reservations.

Why Visit Miami in the Summer

Unlike most popular vacation destinations around the globe, summer in Miami is the least busy season. Uncomfortably hot and muggy. The majority of the days experience heavy, albeit fleeting, afternoon showers and temperatures that exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Miami’s hurricane season runs from summer to fall. And while that doesn’t necessarily imply consistently bad weather, you should make plans just in case.

Regardless of the weather, Miami has a ton of summertime activities to keep you occupied, especially if you enjoy warm waters and ideal waves. Given that there are fewer people than in peak season, you probably won’t have to fight for a piece of sand. However, don’t forget your sunscreen!

Miami’s summertime has a slower, cozier vibe. Due to Miami Spice Months, Miami Hotels Months, and Miami Spa Months, where you can visit the city for less, prices are more reasonable.

Fall: September, October, November

As the summer is coming to an end and school is starting up again, this is probably the least busy time to visit the city. But now is still a great time to visit. Expect rain and humidity because hurricane season is still in full force until November. Since the temperature is usually in the mid-80s, now is still a great time to visit the beach. In all honesty, visiting the beach in Miami is a great idea at any time of year. This season, there are also fewer visitors, which is advantageous if you want to cut costs on your trip.

  • Every year in October, there is the South Beach Seafood Festival. The finest culinary creations from Miami are on display during this four-day festival. The event is packed with tasting opportunities, live entertainment, and plenty of seafood. With family, friends, or both, it’s a fantastic place to spend the day.
  • Attend the Lincoln Road Halloween party if you are in Miami on Halloween. The outdoor mall becomes Miami’s creepiest Halloween event as night falls. Come prepared for a night of wacky fun and dress in costume. Even earlier in the day, from 5-8 p.m., there is a kid’s version.

Why Visit Miami in the Fall

While you shouldn’t expect rust-colored leaves and pumpkin patches, Fall in Miami does bring changes to the city. With the onset of autumn, the city begins to recover from its summertime lull and is infused with fresh energy.

Being outside for an extended period of time once more becomes an option as the temperature gradually drops below sweltering.

Rain has stopped falling, most students have gone back to class, football season has resumed, and hurricane season is about to end. The final few peaceful months before the start of the high season are celebrated over the long weekends. There are so many reasons to rejoice!

After the price slump in August, prices do start to rise, but they remain affordable when compared to the peak season.

When Are There Festivals and Events in Miami?

Miami is a busy city with a lot going on all the time, but the biggest events tend to happen in the cooler months.

Every March, thousands of people attend and famous performers congregate at the massive Ultra Music Festival. If electronic dance music isn’t your thing, check out the Winter Party, a week-long extravaganza that benefits the LGBTQ+ community, which takes place in March.

In a similar vein, April is when Miami Beach Pride is held. One of the biggest Pride celebrations in the nation now takes place over two days at this extravaganza. Then, from the end of May through the beginning of June, there is Miami Fashion Week.

Florida Supercon, which takes place every summer, attracts comic book fans from all over the state. A full five days of hip-swinging moves are presented by the Miami Salsa Congress in the middle of July, in keeping with the city’s diverse population.

  • Arepa. The origin of this heavenly treat stems from Venezuela. Packed with fresh vegetables, rich cheeses, tender meats, or a tantalizing blend of all three, an arepa will satisfy all your gastronomical yearnings. Flavorful black beans, fried plantains, melty shredded cheese, and braised beef nestled inside a soft maize bread is a must-try combo.
  • Frita Cubana. For a unique Cuban twist on the American hamburger, try a frita . Locally served on Cuban bread with match stick potatoes and a secret sauce, it’s a burger experience you won’t want to miss.
  • Stone crabs. Peculiarly, the only part of the crab that people harvest is its claws. Over the following two years, the claws regenerate, which makes stone crabs a renewable food. To taste the real Miami, complement your stone crabs with mayo, coleslaw, and hash brown potatoes. The plate goes well with a beer chilled to perfection.
  • Chicken ‘N’ Watermelon ‘N’ Waffles. This quirky combo is a best-seller in many Miami restaurants. A delectable sight on brunch menus, the fried chicken buddies up to a savory and sweet cheddar-cheese waffle, and a refreshing and spicy watermelon, all topped off with a bourbon-maple syrup and a zesty honey-hot sauce. If you’re in the mood for something different, give it a try.

Miami Cocktails

After the foods that make Miami special, let’s see what accompanies them best. In this section, we’ll show you the staple drinks that make Miami worth visiting.

  • Miami Vice. If you’re looking for a beach-perfect cocktail, Miami Vice is your go-to. You can find this classic Miami cocktail at any beachfront bar.
  • Mojito. Miami’s love for Cuban-influenced drinks is evident in the popularity of the mojito . The iconic cocktail is a harmonious blend of aromatic rum, fresh mint, juicy lime, cane sugar, and sparkling water. The light Cuban highball is a great choice for the everlasting summers of Miami.
  • Rum Runner. Islamorada, one of the Florida Keys , is where our next Miami beverage comes from. Combining light and dark rums, orange and pineapple juices, banana and blackberry liqueurs, and a splash of grenadine, the Rum Runner packs a powerful punch. So, be sure to take it easy.
  • Jupina. This sweet pineapple soda has been a beloved staple for Miamians ever since it made its way from Cuba to the States. Jupina , short for “jugo de piña” (pineapple juice), is a drink you can find in every corner store or Cuban restaurant in the city.
  • Cafecito. The aroma of a rich and robust Cuban espresso permeates the air within a 500-foot radius. Known for its intense strength, cafecito is the driving force behind the energy of the Magic City. However, novice drinkers should exercise caution when trying it for the first time as its potency can lead to heart palpitations.
  • Café con leche. If you don’t drink coffee regularly, café con leche could be a more suitable choice than cafecito. Translated as “coffee with milk”, café con leche is a shot of strong coffee (espresso or cafecito) inside a glass of warm milk. It’s a popular breakfast drink for locals who often use it to dip their Cuban toasts in.

For instance, there are plenty of rental locations on the island for recreational sports like jet skiing, paddleboarding and sailing for on-the-water fun, but there are also bike, golf cart, and beach buggy rentals for getting around on land.

For the most part, the island is filled with local restaurants and shops, favoring a hyper-local atmosphere for residents and tourists to enjoy. Our favorite eateries to frequent when visiting AMI include the Waterfront Restaurant, French Table, Poppo’s Taqueria, Duffy’s and our #1, Old Hamburg Schnitzelhaus . Their overall laidback approach to vacationing provides the ultimate relaxation experience for anyone looking for a casual beach trip.

Visit Panama City Beach

should i visit miami in august

Panama City Beach also experiences a small lull at this point in the Summer when the heat becomes unbearable for non-locals and more sensitive guests. This allows the beaches and waters to be a bit clearer for your vacation and for hotel and rental rates to come down a bit. With over 27 miles of coastline to enjoy, there’s no shortage of fun for tourists of all types.

In addition to the sandy beach activities and water recreation, Panama City Beach has several state parks that visitors can explore. Places like Camp Helen State Park and Conservation Park are great for hiking, while St. Andrew State Park is good for water sports like snorkeling, diving, kayaking and fishing. The city also has several attractions for both adults and children like the Shipwreck Island Waterpark and Coconut Creek Family Park .

Off the beach, check out the many different local shops, restaurants and bars that PCB has to offer. They proudly proclaim their title of “Seafood Capital of the South”, so it’s safe to say that the majority of the seafood restaurants are worth visiting. After dinner, the nightlife continues with hot spots like Club la Vela, which is the biggest nightclub in the U.S. Pier Park is also a great destination for restaurants and shopping while in town.

Best Beaches in Florida in August

Florida is surrounded by great beaches you can visit all year. Below we’ve listed the best beaches in each of Florida’s coasts and what the experience will be like in the month of August. August ocean temperatures are often compared to “bath water”, which is what feeds the impending hurricanes that rack the state from year to year.

Emerald Coast: Best All Around

should i visit miami in august

The Emerald Coast makes up Florida’s panhandle from Pensacola to Tallahassee and is a perfect combination of the American South and the Florida Coastline. This coast will maintain some of the more mild temperatures over the Summer, and August will have average water temperatures of 85.5°F (29.7°C).

Our top beach recommendations in this area are Pensacola, Destin and Panama City. The Emerald Coast is ideal for families, couples and friend groups, with lots to accommodate all types of vacationers. It’s also the closest beach area to Tallahassee. Tourists love the sugar-white sands and turquoise water of the Emerald Coast, as well as the homey beach town atmosphere. This area is farthest outside the hurricane zone, but no part of Florida is completely in the clear.

First Coast: Calm and Quiet

should i visit miami in august

The First Coast is Florida’s oldest coast located on the Atlantic side. It features the historical cities and beaches of St. Augustine, Jacksonville and Amelia Island. The water temperatures in the month of August will be some of the coolest in the state at 84.2°F (29°C).

St. Augustine is a great spot to visit year round and it’s got lots of great historic tours and delicious restaurants to indulge in. Flagler Beach and Amelia Island will both offer a more secluded feeling with pristine, less crowded beaches and Jacksonville Beach is a nice getaway for the whole family. The First Coast is farthest North in the state, so it’s a little less likely to get hurricanes than the Southern areas.

Sun Coast: Hot but Cool

should i visit miami in august

The Sun Coast is a popular place with tourists across the country, featuring Tampa Bay’s best beaches. It’s on the Gulf side of the state, with warm weather and water temps at 86.7°F (30.4°C) in August. Our best recommendations in this area include Clearwater Beach, St. Pete Beach and the islands off Dunedin. This area is best for those looking to vacation in Tampa or St. Pete with access to the beach.

Most guests will be heading to St. Pete Beach and Clearwater because of the heavy tourist marketing in those areas, but Caladesi Island State Park and Honeymoon Island State Park are better, more secluded islands that are highly recommended by residents. Tampa Bay is often one of the last areas for hurricanes to come through. When they do end up here, they are generally a lower category after coming across the state.

Cultural Coast

should i visit miami in august

The Cultural Coast is just South of the Sun Coast and is our personal favorite place to be in the Summer. In August, the water and weather will be warm and sunny with ocean temps at an average 86.7°F (30.4°C). The overall feeling in this area is a bit more beach town than big city, though you can get more of the city vibes in nearby Sarasota.

Our best suggestions for visiting the Cultural Coast are Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Sanibel Island, Captiva and Siesta Key. Anna Maria Island is a quaint beach town while Longboat Key has luxurious accommodations and wider beaches. The islands surrounding Sarasota have many different amenities and styles to suit different travelers. Same as the Sun Coast, it’s less likely for hurricanes to make it this far, but will typically have a lower impact when they do.

Paradise Coast

The Paradise Coast is on the Southwest side of Florida. It has a more relaxed and natural upscale vibe than the busy city feeling of Miami. The waters are warm and clear, averaging 87.3°F (30.7°C) and the top beaches on this coast are Marco Island, Naples, and Fort Myers.

Marco Island is great for families and active seniors, while Naples and Fort Myers are most appealing to retirees. Hurricanes can become an issue for this area, but it’s not quite as bad as neighboring Miami as far as likelihood from year to year.

Space Coast

The Space Coast is located slightly north of Orlando on the Atlantic side of the state. Aptly named the Space Coast for it’s landmark Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, this coast is also home to the famous Ron Jon Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach and the International Speedway in Daytona.

August will have water temperatures averaging 84.6°F (29.2°C) and the best beaches to visit are Daytona Beach, Melbourne and Cocoa Beach. If you’re looking for a nice beach vacation that’s less touristy, check out New Smyrna Beach or Merritt Island, which are better for a weeklong stay.

Since the Space Coast is on the Atlantic side of Florida toward the center of the state, it always has a chance of getting slammed with hurricanes, though the likelihood is a little lower than the Miami area.

Treasure Coast

The Treasure Coast is located just above the Miami and Fort Lauderdale beaches. While it’s not nearly as busy as South Beach, it’ll still share high chances of hurricanes with Miami. Despite this, it’s a beautiful place to vacation and August isn’t extremely busy with warmer waters at 85.6°F (29.8°C).

Our top beach recommendations in this area are West Palm, Delray, Pompano, Palm Beach, and Boca Raton. All feature slightly different styles, with West Palm and Palm Beach being the most popular. We suggest trying Pompano Beach, which has multiple diving sights to explore coral reefs and shipwrecks. Boca Raton is also great for recreational activities like golf and shopping and Delray has a booming arts district for culture seekers.

The Florida Keys

The Keys are an extremely popular destination all year round. August has fewer tourists, but it’s got a high chance of hurricanes. Luckily, August is the beginning of lobster season in the Keys, so residents and visitors will occupy their time snorkeling for the bugs when not dodging bad weather. The water averages 86.5°F (30.3°C) and our favorite spots include beaches on Key West, Key Largo and Marathon, as well as Bahia Honda State Park and the Dry Tortugas National Park .

The Keys have a lot of interesting scenery and things to do that you won’t find anywhere else in the U.S. There are many historical landmarks and island tours to take. Sportsman will love the fishing, diving and boating this time of year. Foodies will always find a great dive or popular restaurant to try.

The Gold Coast is located in the southwest side of Florida, mainly encompassing the Miami and Fort Lauderdale area on the Atlantic side. Miami has the highest temperatures in Florida all year and the highest likelihood to get wrecked by hurricanes and tropical storms. The beaches are usually less busy in August with water temps at 84.9°F (29.4°C).

Our top recommendations for Gold Coast beaches in August include Miami Beach, South Beach and Fort Lauderdale. Expect the atmosphere to be energetic with decent lodging and a bustling downtown area with a culturally diverse crowd. While August is extremely hot and rainy in Miami, the city remains a popular destination all year, so crowds won’t differ too much from the cooler months.

Top Florida Attractions in August

Walt disney world.

should i visit miami in august

Walt Disney World is the vacation capital of the world, therefore it’s Florida’s biggest attraction and remains busy most of the year. Walt Disney World is comprised of four different theme parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom) and two water parks (Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon). Disney is located outside of Orlando in Lake Buena Vista.

In the month of August, the weather will be hot and humid with a unpredictable rain showers that occur almost daily. The parks and resort crowds are starting to slow this month, but remain moderate. Resort rates will be fairly high, along with ticket pricing and even food pricing (which fluctuates with tourist volumes).

This month, Epcot will begin their popular Food & Wine Festival which lasts through November. The festival consists of countless stands dotting the World Showcase, featuring foods from many different countries around the world in small plate portions. Magic Kingdom will also start the Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party this month.

Universal Orlando

should i visit miami in august

Universal Orlando is Disney’s biggest rival, featuring two different theme parks (Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure) along with one water park (Volcano Bay). It’s located on the outskirts of Orlando and has it’s own resort accommodations for guests to enjoy. The parks are known for movie-themed roller coasters, rides and attractions for all ages.

August weather will be hot and wet with daily rain showers highly likely. This is a great month to hit up Volcano Bay, which will be just as crowded as the other parks in August, but will offer a nice reprieve from the hot Florida sun. Universal follows Disney’s lead and begins their Halloween Horror Nights this month, which is significantly scarier than Mickey’s party.

SeaWorld Orlando

should i visit miami in august

SeaWorld is most popular for it’s aquatic animals, shows and coasters. It’s very close to Universal Orlando and makes a great full day of entertainment. SeaWorld has recently added big roller coasters like Manta and Mako to up their thrill game for older audiences. There is plenty for people of all ages to enjoy inside this ocean-themed park.

In August, the weather is hot with a high chance of rain showers. The park will be fairly crowded and there will be no special events held this month, but the park hours should be longer giving vacationers even more time to play.

Busch Gardens

should i visit miami in august

Busch Gardens is the biggest theme park in the Tampa Bay area, located in north Tampa. It’s a great option for a full day to add into your weeklong vacation in Tampa, St. Petersburg or Clearwater, about 15 miles from the Tampa International Airport.

Busch Gardens is known for it’s big coasters, like Cheetah Hunt and Kumba, along with it’s African themed animal habitats where guests can see wildlife in designated areas. August is a fairly busy month for the park, but will start to wane toward September.

Legoland is one of Florida’s newest theme parks located in Winter Haven, right in the middle of Central Florida. As you can imagine, Legoland is entirely themed after these popular little toy blocks which have inspired movies, roller coasters and water rides. There’s even a Lego resort where you can stay on vacation.

August has hot weather with fun summer activities, and the park will have a decent crowd, especially on the weekends. August is also a great time to splash in the water area and little kids will love the toy-themed attractions all over the park.

Aquatica & Discovery Cove

August is a perfect month to visit the water parks. It will typically have busy crowds and warmer water temperatures, but this makes it more exciting than the cold Winter months.

Aquatica is an Orlando-based water park that’s great for kids and families. There are many different water features, slides and pools for all ages to enjoy, along with more relaxing areas with cabanas and umbrellas for those not seeking to get wet. They’ve even got manmade beaches and a wave pool. The most popular attraction is the Dolphin Plunge: a fast water slide with a clear tube that sends you through the dolphin exhibit.

Discovery Cove is near Aquatica and is best known for it’s dolphin encounter. The entire resort has a more relaxing atmosphere with a focus on getting you up close and personal with Florida’s native sea creatures. Discovery Cove offers multiple diving, snorkeling and swimming tours for each comfort level. It’s even got a Certified Autism Center and beaches for little ones to play.

August Events in Florida

Miami spice.

Miami Spice is a two month-long program dedicated to giving residents and tourists the best restaurant experiences that the city has to offer. It’s designed with the unique culture and cuisines of Miami in mind, giving guests special rates on multi-course meals at some of the best restaurants, cafes and bars.

Key West Lobsterfest

August is the beginning of lobster season in the Keys, so they celebrate with the Key West Lobsterfest . The event features fresh caught lobster cooked in various ways by Keys locals and renowned chefs, cold drinks and free entertainment. Each of the events in this four-day festival is separately ticketed.

The impending hurricanes and high heat and humidity will often drive families away in August, but younger couples and friend groups will enjoy the dropping travel rates and lodging prices this time of year.

August in Florida will be most ideal for those who can change plans easily if a hurricane makes it’s way through the state during their vacation, or for those who don’t mind bearing the heat to have some fun in the sun.
