Five tourists fined ₹ 25K for drinking during safari in Tadoba

Five tourists in the tadoba tiger reserve in india have been fined ₹5,000 ($68) each for consuming alcohol during a safari. the tourists were under the influence of alcohol while riding in a vehicle within the reserve. the tadoba tiger project aims to deter similar behavior by imposing fines and banning tourists from further visits. the reserve, home to over 130 tigers, is one of the oldest national parks in india..

NAGPUR: In a stern message directed towards tourists who engaged in hooliganism and other illegal activities within the Tiger Reserve area of Tadoba in Chandrapur district, wildlife management on Thursday imposed a fine of ₹ 5,000 each on five individuals for consuming alcohol during a safari in Tadoba.

According to the wildlife wing of Tadoba, the tourists departed from Moharli Gate in the Tadoba Tiger Reserve, with one of them, while riding in a gypsy, displaying a keen interest in spotting a tiger. Regrettably, it was reported that all the tourists who were riding in a gypsy in which he was there consumed alcohol while touring the forest area.

Upon noticing this behaviour, the tour guide intervened, advising against consuming alcohol in the gypsy. Despite the guide’s admonition, all five tourists within the gypsy vehicle persisted, prompting the guide to return the gypsy to Moharli Gate and inform the relevant forest officials of the incident.

Upon investigation, the management of the Tadoba Tiger Project confirmed that all five tourists within the vehicle were under the influence of alcohol. Consequently, they were fined and barred from further visits to the reserve forests. The forest department collected ₹ 25,000 from them as fines.

Nandkishore Kale, the deputy director of the Tadoba Tiger Project, declined to disclose the names of the tourists, citing concerns for their privacy and human rights. “They were from Chandrapur. This is not the first instance where fines have been imposed on tourists for consuming alcohol. Similar actions have been taken previously in the reserve forest areas,” he stated. Kale emphasised that such measures serve as a deterrent to prevent other tourists from engaging in similar behaviour.

Tadoba, one of the oldest national parks in the country, spans over 1,727 square kilometres and boasts some of the finest forest tracks teeming with diverse biodiversity. Designated as a tiger project in 1996, it is home to over 130 tigers and various rare Indian animals, including leopards, wild dogs, hyenas, wild boar, sloth bears, and bison.

Bombay Gin Prices Guide

Bombay Gin Prices Guide

Is it Made in India?

As is the case with many namesake brands, Bombay gin is not made anywhere near Bombay. In fact, it is made in Whitchurch, Hampshire in England. Bombay gin is named to recognize the popularity of gin during the British raj . It is the second most widely consumed gin in the world!

Three Offerings (Four in the UK)

Bombay gin has three different types - Dry, Sapphire, and Sapphire East. These three types offer blends of eight, ten, and twelve botanicals. The Star of Bombay special edition was released to the UK only in 2015.  Bombay Sapphire is arguably the most popular of the Bombay gins and it includes the following botanicals in its recipe:

  • Juniper Berries
  • Grains of Paradise

Bombay Sapphire East adds lemongrass and black peppercorns, adding a twist to the Sapphire recipe. Bombay Dry features the first eight ingredients.

Bombay Gin Pricing

Bombay Gin Pricing

As you can see in Table 1 below, it appears that the cost rises slightly as more botanicals are added to the recipe. With that said, Bombay gin prices are reasonably similar to other gins of a like quality. Have a look at Table 2, which includes gins in a similar price range.

Table 1: Bombay Gin Average Prices

Table 2: bombay gin versus comparable gins.

As evidenced in Table 2, Bombay Sapphire is quite reasonably priced given that it is the signature product in the Bombay line of gins. Bombay Sapphire also offers a beautiful presentation in its iconic blue glass bottle, allowing it to look like a more expensive gin than it is.

For a bottle in this price point, one could expect a lack of quality. However, Bombay Sapphire is rated particularly high by the Beverage Testing Institute . Its most recent rating was a 92, which is quite high on their scale. Of course, one must decide on their own if a bottle is worth its cost.

Bombay Gin Tasting Notes

Bombay Dry: a traditional gin with a strong juniper taste and a dry finish.

Bombay Sapphire East: mellow juniper with a strong black pepper note

The entire area of the national park forms approximately 20% of Mumbai’s geographical area.

History of Sanjay Gandhi National Park Mumbai

The history of Sanjay Gandhi National Park dates back to 4th Century BCE when ancient civilizations of Sopara and Kalyan had a 45-kilometre trade route between each other and kingdoms of these trade capitals exchanged trades with Greece and Mesopotamia.

The trade route between Sopara and Kalyan passed through Kanheri Caves which was a site of learning as well as pilgrimage for Buddhists. The caves were sculpted out of one single basalt rock by Buddhist monks between 9th and 1st Century BCE.

What was earlier known as Krishnagiri National Park during the pre- independence era (1942), was later known as Borivali National Park in 1974 and was spread across an area of 20.26 square kilometres only. This was done in 1942 under the Bombay National Park Act.

However, later on the park area was expanded twice. Once in 1976 and later again in 1981. During the expansion of 1981, the area that came under the National Park measured 82.25 Square kilometre.

The park was named as Sanjay Gandhi National Park, after the elder son of ex- Prime Minister of India, Ms. Indira Gandhi in 1996 and the park area was further expanded to 103 square kilometres simultaneously.

Established in the late 19th Century by migrant Iranians, these cafés are recognizable by their chequered tablecloths, dark wooden furniture, bentwood chairs and loudly whirring ceiling fans. 2. Samovar Café

Samovar café.

Not technically a bar, when speaking of beverages and culture, you cannot fail to speak of Samovar Café . Established in the 1970s in a long narrow corridor, with brightly coloured décor and looking out onto the lawns of the Prince of Wales museum, Samovar is attached to Jehangir Art Gallery and was a refuge for many of the greatest artists of the city and country, who scribbled on its walls and contributed to a commemorative coffee table book. Its significance to the art scene is unrivalled, as both a casual space to work in and a venue in which to share culture and tea. If this doesn’t take your fancy, try a beer, or a glass of chaas, jeera lassi or guava juice. Their stuffed parathas – pan-fried flat breads – and pot kulfis – ice-cream made from evaporating and sweetening milk – are particular favourites. Samovar Café, 161-B, Jehangir Art Gallery, MG Road, Kala Ghoda, Mumbai, India, +91 22 2284 8000

The SKKY Lounge at Powai will appeal to those who love nature, inventive cocktails and a good game. At SKKY, seating is delicately placed between a symmetrical arrangement of plants and still-water pools. The venue, viewed from above, resembles the ornate geometry of India’s Mughal gardens . There’s also a wide-screen TV placed high above the lounge, allowing you to keep track of a sports game even in this surreally beautiful environement. Rock music, affordable drinks, motor and hubcap décor together with a charming and informal crowd make this a friendly local that is a must-see for visitors. Toto’s Garage, Lourdes Heaven, Pali Junction, Pali Hill, Bandra West, Mumbai, India , +91 22 2600 5494

Woodside Inn

Over the charming bar at Woodside Inn are beer bottles set in ornate box picture frames. This is just a flavour of the carefully considered décor, from the inside, the beautiful gothic arch appears like the outline of a fireplace, welcoming in the punters. These and other touches fill Woodside Inn with references to English culture and evoke feelings of an English pub. What makes Woodside Inn even more interesting is the enthusiastic range of cultural events they run. They have hosted musical and comedy gigs, an Old Mumbai Bicycle Tour, conversations during their Late Night Beer Sessions, (with restaurateurs and food bloggers) and a night with Gateway Brewery . Woodside Inn, Wodehouse Road, Colaba, Mumbai, India, +91 22 2202 5525

6 of the best whisky bars in Mumbai

Whether you have it neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail, whisky is undoubtedly India’s most loved spirit. And if you know where to go, you can get your hands on some of the rarest, most coveted whiskies in the world, along with some delicious cocktails featuring everyone’s favourite alcohol.

Here are six of the best whisky-centric bars in Mumbai.

The Sahib Room & Kipling Bar stocks over 100 whiskies, ranging from the familiar to the rare, and includes some magnificent 30-year-old varieties. The bar staff is happy to take you through the list if you find the spread daunting (which, let’s face it, many of us might). Decked out in old-world charm and lit by gilded chandeliers, this is a posh venue—the kind of place you come to savour a great dram rather than kick-start a wild night. To add to that, the restaurant is also well known for serving delectable Indian dishes.

This iconic bar has been serving the city since the 1930s. Besides being privy to the most stunning view of Mumbai’s best-known landmark, the Gateway of India, Harbour Bar is stacked high with an enviable selection of bottles from the best whisky regions in the world—from Scotland to Japan. Choose from The Royal Salute 62 Gun Salute (the oldest whisky ever released by Royal Salute), Glenmorangie Signet (believed to be among the distillery’s oldest and rarest stocks) and an exquisite Glenfiddich Excellence 26 YO.

Regular pours of whisky are served in Glencairn snifters with spherical ice and soda from Franklin & Sons UK to enhance the flavour and drinking experience. Don’t miss the cocktail ‘Berty's Rob Roy’, which fuses scotch whisky with raw mangoes and cardamom-infused dry vermouth. With plush seating, mood lighting and jazz music, Harbour Bar is a rather irresistible proposition for the malt lover.

John Leese of Bastian Hospitality Pvt. Ltd.

Rare finds include the Glenfiddich Project XX and Glenmorangie Signet.

Bar honcho John Leese also makes an exquisite whisky sour with a dash of date syrup and bitters. Fresh apple muddled with Jim Beam bourbon is another power-packed cocktail to indulge in. Bastian’s small plates—including sushi and grills—make the perfect accompaniment for the drams.

Mumbai is located on the northwest coast of India, roughly 1200km (750 miles) south of Delhi and 400km (250 miles) north of Goa.

Known up to 1995 as Bombay, the modern city of Mumbai is the largest in India (roughly equally with Delhi) and the seventh largest city in the world, with a population of around 20 million people.

The city is set on a cluster of seven islands and the surrounding mainland, centred around a large natural harbour.

The history of Mumbai goes back thousands of years, it being one of several ports along this coastline which linked the inland kingdoms of Rajasthan and Central India to trade throughout the Indian Ocean.

In 1534, under threat of invasion by the Mughals, local leaders signed a treaty with the Portuguese, who increasingly took control of the coast. In 1661, the marriage of King Charles II to Portuguese princess Catherine of Braganza saw control of the islands pass to the British crown, who subsequently leased them to the English East India Company in 1668.

A major land reclamation and redevelopment project in the 1840s saw Bombay emerge as a major trading port, followed by the construction of some truly impressive colonial edifices.

Bombay was one of the epicentres of the independence movement in the 1940s and has since grown into an extraordinary economic powerhouse, accounting for 25% of the total industrial output and 70% of maritime trade in India.

Modern Mumbai is a vast and frantic place, an incredible hive of human activity. It is a place of huge contrasts, from the graceful architecture grandeur of the colonial centre, to the incredible wealth of the financial centres, to the desperate poverty of the endless slums, all sharing the same interminable traffic gridlock.

This cosmopolitan metropolis is also home to the famous Bollywood film industry and it is sometimes possible to visit the sets to see a movie being shot.

Many international visitors are obliged to transit through the international airport at Mumbai and most find a reason to stay for at least a couple of nights, in order to explore this remarkable city.

Places of interest

Mumbai contains a wealth of historic buildings, interesting temples and cultural centres. Here's a few notes on the best known locations ...

British Colonial Bombay

Within the walls of Fort St George, at the southern end of the peninsular, the British built a magnificent colonial city, filled with superb examples of Gothic revival, neo-classical and Indo-Saracenic styles.

A guided walk around this area is highly recommended, with highlights including the Gateway of India, the Chhatrapati Shivaji (Victoria) Railway Terminus, the Municipal Corporation Building, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Vastu Sangrahalaya (Prince Of Wales) Museum, the High Court, the University of Mumbai and the Taj Mahal Hotel.

There are also some modestly impressive Art Deco buildings in the area around Marine Drive, including the Eros and Regal cinemas.

Museums and galleries

Mumbai contains some of the most impressive museums and galleries in the country, including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (Prince of Wales) Museum and the National Gallery of Modern Art.

Markets and slums

If you want to experience the incredible human concentrations of Mumbai, then you may consider a guided tour to one of the remarkable markets or extensive slum areas.

The enormous fish market and the attractive flower market are of particular interest.

The Dharavi slum, which famously featured in the Bollywood movie Slumdog Millionaire, is home to a remarkable one million people, all crammed together it’s really incredible. The place is smelly and dirty, but the people are remarkably good-natured and there is such a hive of small-scale industry taking place in every narrow alleyway. Tours are carried out by charitable organisations and you are encouraged to act with sensitivity and not to take photos.

Elephanta Island

The island of Elephanta lies in the main bay, around 10km east of the waterfront and contains an impressive labyrinth of cave temples, filled with religious sculptures, which are thought to date from around 650 AD.

A ferry operates from the city waterfront. Once on the island it is a short walk or a miniature train ride into the heart of the island and the caves.

With an incredible output of almost 1000 movies each year, Bollywood is an important part of Mumbai culture.

Two of the most prolific studios, Sankraman and Balaji, open their doors to visitors and, depending on the filming schedule, you may get to actually witness the filming of scenes or go behind the scenes to the dress and make-up departments.

Seasonality

The best time of year to visit the Mumbai area is generally considered to be during Oct-May, although there are considerable climatic variations over that period.

October is the transition period between the end of the monsoon rains and the start of the cool dry season.

During October the daytime temperatures usually rise to around 33C/91F, whilst the nighttime low temperatures hold up around 23C/73F. However the rainfall is much lower, dropping to around 75mm (3”) during the month. Sunshine is around 8 hours per day (around 70% of daylight hours), meaning that skies are quite often clear.

October usually hosts the glamourous Mumbai International Film Festival.

Nov-Feb is the main cool dry season.

During Nov-Feb the daytime temperatures usually rise to around 31C/88F, whilst the nighttime low temperatures plunge to around 18C/64F. Rainfall remains quite low, at around 25mm (1”) per month. Sunshine is around 9 hours per day (around 80% of daylight hours), meaning that skies are usually clear.

The Elephanta Festival takes place in February, with classical music and dancing taking place in front of the Gateway of India.

Mar-May is the hot season, the often uncomfortable build-up to the main monsoon.

During Mar-May the daytime temperatures can climb steeply to around 33C/91F, whilst the nighttime low temperatures are up around 24C/75F. Rainfall remains low, increasing from almost nothing in March to around 25mm (1”) in May. Sunshine is around 9 hours per day (around 85% of daylight hours), indicating that showers tend to be occasional, set against a usually clear sky.

Jun-Sep is the main monsoon season and is generally considered to be the least favourable time to visit

During Jun-Sep the daytime temperatures drop off slightly to around 30C/86F, whilst the nighttime low temperatures remain up at a stifling 25C/71F. Rainfall climbs to an extremely high 550mm (22”) per month. Sunshine drops to around 3 hours per day (around 25% of daylight hours), meaning that skies are very often heavily overcast.

Late August or early September witnesses the ten day Ganesh Chaturthi Festival, with various ceremonies and celebrations, reaching a crescendo with a major parade.

The Mumbai area can be accessed in a number of different ways …

Mumbai Central Station is located 4km north of the main waterfront area and is the terminus usually used by most luxury train services.

The Mumbai area is rarely connected to the rest of the country by road, since it’s a very long way to the main places of interest. It is far more common to fly to another location (notably Udaipur or Delhi) before starting a road trip.

Where to stay

Unfortunately the range of accommodation in Mumbai is rather limited, with a distinct shortage of decent boutique hotels. Most likely you will end up choosing from one of several very large and rather conventional city hotels, or the historically notable Taj Mahal Palace Hotel ...

Bombay HC Lifts Ban on Liquor Sales in Mumbai on June 4, Allows Sale After Declaration of Election Results

Read Time: 04 minutes

This decision arose from two petitions filed by the Association of Owners of Hotels And Restaurants (AHAR), challenging the orders from the Mumbai city and suburban collectors that had mandated a dry day on the said date

The Bombay High Court on Friday lifted a ban on the sale of alcohol on June 4 due to the parliamentary elections, ruling that hotels and liquor stores in Mumbai could sell alcohol on the day votes are counted for the Lok Sabha elections, following the announcement of the general election results.

A vacation bench of Justice N.R. Borkar and Justice Somasekhar Sundaresan , with its decision, has overturned a previous mandate designating June 4 as a 'dry day'. This decision arose from two petitions filed by the Association of Owners of Hotels And Restaurants (AHAR), challenging the orders from the Mumbai city and suburban collectors that had mandated a dry day on the said date.

The High Court ruled in favour of AHAR, stating that the collectors' orders essentially banned liquor sales for the entire day, despite the vote counting likely concluding by the afternoon and results being announced shortly thereafter.

The petitioners had initially requested the collectors to reconsider the dry day order but were informed that it was based on directives from the Election Commission of India (ECI). According to ECI guidelines, liquor sales are prohibited starting 48 hours before voting day and on the day of vote counting.

AHAR argued that shutting down authorised liquor outlets leads to a surge in illegal liquor sales, resulting in significant profits for illicit businesses. They sought a modification of the restrictive orders.

The bench raised concerns about inconsistencies between the actions of different collectors, noting that media coverage and premature victory celebrations by liquor vendors could cause confusion. Additional government pleader Jyoti Chavan urged the court to ensure consistency with previous decisions to prevent such issues.

Ultimately, the court decided to lift the ban on liquor sales in Mumbai after the election results are declared, ensuring parity and addressing the petitioners' concerns about illegal liquor trade.

Where to eat in Mumbai, the Indian megacity that's obsessed with food

Inventive chefs are sharing their stories through food in India’s ever-evolving west coast metropolis, but the city’s appetite for street food, thalis and Parsi dishes remains a comforting constant.

A shop front of a traditional chaat spot in Mumbai. The front is painted pink a man is sitting whilst preparing the dishes while patrons wait.

“I’ve been here 40 years,” says Satinder Singh. “Everyone wants a glass of sweet, salty nimbu pani .” Standing in the baking sun at Satinder’s street stall in South Mumbai’s historic Fort neighbourhood, his rehydrating lime soda cannot come quickly enough.

I’m touring the downtown Colaba area with Pooja Madan Kathuria, a guide of nine years who was born and raised in Mumbai. We’re on the Bombay (as the city is still known by many) Express walking route arranged by A Chef’s Tour, a company specialising in group and private street food tours around Asia. “People are often sceptical about street food,” says Pooja. “And most do this tour on their last day. They should do it on their first.”

I couldn’t agree more. Street food is a defining feature of Mumbai culture and a deep-dive into its myriad forms is essential to understanding the city’s intense appreciation for food. Pooja leads me to a vada pav stand by the Telegraph Building at Churchgate Station. Now run by second and third generations, it’s been dishing up deep-fried mashed potato dumplings ( vada ) in a bun ( pav ) with garlicky chutney and green chilli to Mumbaikars since 1971. The dish dates back much further, however. Locals will tell you it was vada   vendor Ashok Vaidya who first spotted a fellow seller serving omelette pav   in 1866 and championed a combo of the two.

I learn more as we walk and talk en route to Churchgate station, taking in Mumbai’s eclectic architecture. There are art deco cinemas, colonial-era stations and grandiose fountains constructed by Indian labourers during British rule. We also pass the landmark hotel Taj Palace with its flourish of Islamic, European and East Asian influences. At A Taste of Kerala restaurant, we sample thali served on a banana leaf before stopping at Volga Pan House, a kiosk where Subhash Chandra has been filling pan   (betel leaves) with ingredients such as rose, dried dates and desiccated coconut for 40 years. “I don’t know how many I make,” says the panwala   ( ‘wala’ meaning person of specific service). “But I chew two to four a day,” he says, deftly rolling the traditional mouth-freshner.

A one-stop train ride from Churchgate takes us to Marine Lines (soon to be renamed Mumbai Devi as part of an initiative to decolonise place names). The area is populated by Parsis, who fled religious persecution in the Persian empire more than a thousand years ago, and Iranis, Zoroastrians who left Qajar-era Iran for British-ruled India in the 19th and 20th centuries. At Parsi Dairy Farm, a 119-year-old institution, we try mithai (sweets) and kulfi (ice cream) and the rose-fragranced drink-dessert falooda .

Around the corner, one of Mumbai’s oldest Irani cafe-bakeries, Kyani & Co, founded in 1904, is a time capsule of vintage signage and photos. It’s Irani cafes such as these that inspired the UK’s ever-expanding Dishoom restaurant group. I eat a wonderfully aromatic keema pav (mutton curry in a bun) and guzzle Parsi brand Pallonji’s raspberry soda.

There are far too many chaat   (street snacks) to choose from but Pooja homes in on my favourite, bhel puri at nearby Jambulwadi Bhelpuri House, to finish. Originating in Gujarat, the state north of Maharashtra and my ancestral homeland, it’s a perfect tangy mix of puffed rice, fried lentils, chutneys, crunchy gram flour sev noodles and mango.

The next day, appetite recovered, it’s off to Lalbaug Spice Market. At the Chavan Brothers stall, where you can have spices pounded, ground and blended, I help stir a fresh batch of the 50-plus ingredients for malvani , a spice blend from the west-coast Maharashtra’s Malvan region. I’m here with Chandana Abkari, a guide with The Explorations Company, which designs trips focusing on unique local experiences. We step back to watch the grinding machines in action, and I stock up on some of the complex blend, redolent of cumin and turmeric.

Fragrant bag in hand, we move on to Bhaji Gully market by South Mumbai’s Grant Road Station, where we find kand   (purple yam) and the brown, caramel-sweet chikoo   fruit, alongside non-traditional produce like wild garlic, lemongrass and avocados.   “The market shows the changing palates of a new generation who want ingredients to cook — say, Thai or Italian food,” says Chandana. A firm Mumbai favourite, she tells me, is ‘Chindian’, or Chinese-Indian fusion.

It’s Ramadan, and as evening beckons, Chandana recommends the food stands off Mohammed Ali Road, where Muslims are breaking the fast. I start with dessert, a custard-apple ice cream inside a coconut with malai   (coconut flesh), before joining a communal table for fried chicken and rumali-roti (thin unleavened flatbread).

For many visitors, ‘Mumbai’ means South Mumbai and Colaba’s historic sights. But the suburbs are integral to the city’s food scene, from the juice bars of Juhu Beach to Matunga’s South Indian Udupi cafes and especially Bandra’s restaurants. All are connected to South Mumbai’s peninsular thanks to the Coastal Road project that’s been installing bridge and tunnel links over the past decade.

In Bandra West, I find the retro-chic Bombay Sweet Shop reinventing traditional Indian mithai   (sweets). “We try to evoke fond memories while creating fresh and modern experiences with our sweets,” says Girish Nayak, the store’s chief mithaiwala . The bhel puri chikki , a combination of salty nuts and sugary jaggery, is so good I buy 10 packets as gifts. Savoury treats, which I devour on site, include beetroot tikki chaat   (a beetroot patty with sev , chickpeas, green chutney and masala powder) and dhokla   (spiced, spongy, steamed gram flour ‘cake’) with avocado and cherry tomatoes. I have no room for their latest creation, churros made with gulab jamun (cardamom, rose and saffron-infused fried dumplings), but I return later to try them.

I ask the sous chef, Tulsi Ponnappa, what her favourite item is: “Our cherry gola   (granita), available exclusively here,” she says. “Nothing beats a street gola , but I think we’ve come pretty close with this dessert. It holds a special place in my heart because as a kid, I used to save my school bus money to buy gola .”

A person is sitting at a restaurant wearing an olive green blazer with a tapered tall wine glass. There are several dishes of food on the table in differing coloured plates.

Later on, I head for Sequel, a gluten-free, farm-to-fork restaurant that’s located in the Bandra Kurla Complex helmed by Kashmiri-born Vanika Choudhary. Inspired by her grandmother, who made 40 pickles a month, the almost all-female restaurant champions indigenous, fermented and foraged ingredients. It’s here, over a kombucha shake and vegan protein bowl of oven-baked millet and green pea falafel, that I meet Mumbaikar food writer Roshni Bajaj Sanghvi.

Old and new converge in the Worli district at Ode. It’s the latest restaurant from Rahul Akerkar, the Maharashtrian-German credited with bringing fine dining to Mumbai in 1999 with his restaurant Indigo. This venture uses traditional techniques, such as pickling and smoking, to create modern fusion dishes.

“I use as much local food as I can. From flour and seafood to spices,” says Rahul over lunch. The charred cabbage is surprisingly light, while the walnut onion cappellacci pasta in Kashmiri morel broth is warming, and the dark chocolate Khandeshi kala masala mole sauce is a gamechanger on pork ribs, perfect with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc from Indian winemaker Sula. As for chef Ash Moghe’s aged manchego cheesecake: I’d have eaten it twice.

When I ask Rahul what he craves after time away from Mumbai, he says, without hesitation: “Street food.” For all the city’s excellent restaurants, it’s heartening that a third-generation recipe for vada pav or bhel puri is what endures, even for a top chef.

I think back to my Colaba tour with Pooja, which ended at Mumbai’s main railway station sipping masala chai from a chaiwala   under grand gothic buttresses. In a city with an insatiable appetite for change, street food stands as firm as its architecture. Mumbai just isn’t Mumbai — or Bombay — without it.

Must-try restaurants in Mumbai

1.   Jimmy Boy This family restaurant in Colaba has been dishing up mutton pulao dal (mutton with rice and lentils; pictured), keema pav (mince in a bun), and masala chai in a Fort district heritage building since 1925. Enjoy a Parsi breakfast of keema gotala (mutton mince with scrambled eggs), and specialities such as saas ni macchi, sweet-and-sour fish. From 300INR to 950INR (£3 to £9). No alcohol.

2.   Bombay Canteen This Lower Parel brunch spot serves regional dishes with a twist. Try pani puri, hollow fried pastry puffs, filled with prawn and avocado, and street food-style tikki chaat patties made with turnip. South Indian-inspired Telangana chicken curry dishes are generous and cocktails are creative — try the tamarind whisky shake. Mains from 1,000INR (£9.50).

3.   Shree Thaker Bhojanalay Who can resist an unlimited thali? This vegetarian Gujarati institution in Kalbadevi serves plentiful platters of savoury farsan (snacks), warmly spiced daals, chutneys and flatbreads in a no-frills but air-conditioned dining hall. No alcohol. From 600INR (£5.70).

4.   Joshi House Dishes served at this Rajasthani-style mansion in Pali Hill, include truffle ravioli and risotto, inventive street food such as broccoli and green pea samosa, mutton biriyani, and prawns cooked in homemade masala. The paan kulfi ice cream infused with sweet spices and gulkand (rose petal paste) is alone worth the trip. Mains from 750INR (£7.10).

Five foods to try in Mumbai

Vada pav Served across the city, the king of Mumbai street food is the original ‘veggie burger’, a deep-fried potato patty with tangy chutneys, packed into a soft white bread bun.

Chindian cuisine Try pan-fried chicken Manchurian with soy sauce, chilli, coriander, ginger and garlic, a hit since Kolkata-born Nelson Wang founded Mumbai’s China Garden in 1975.

Maska & chai Mumbai’s Irani cafe-bakeries such as Yazdani, near Flora Fountain in the Fort neighbourhood, sell fresh maska; a soft, slightly sweet bread served with homemade butter and masala chai.

Green chilli thecha A favourite with Mumbai food writer Roshni Bajaj Sanghvi, thecha is a spicy Maharashtrian chutney often served with crispy bhakri, millet flatbread.

Bombay sandwich The beloved buttered toastie synonymous with Mumbai street food is a must, where grilled sliced bread is filled with chutney, vegetables, cheese and chaat masala spice blend.

Cannabis is in and alcohol is out. Is Gen Z driving the change in preference?

By Nikki Battiste

May 23, 2024 / 8:00 PM EDT / CBS News

With recreational marijuana now legal in 24 states , the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is moving to reclassify the drug to a less dangerous category under the Controlled Substances Act.

This comes as daily marijuana users now outnumber daily drinkers for the first time ever, according to a new report from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University.

The change in preference is largely being driven by young people. Of people aged 18 to 24, 69% prefer marijuana to alcohol, according to a 2022 survey by New Frontier Data, a cannabis research firm.

Work 'N' Roll, a shared workspace in downtown New York City, is among the organizations hoping to capitalize on the trend among young workers. For as little as $15, guests can toke while they type.

"Here we smoke, because it enhances our work. That's our secret sauce," Matthew Everett, a Work 'N' Roll patron, said.

"I transitioned over into cannabis cause I saw that there's limitless possibilities with the flavors," he added. "And I found like, hey, I don't have a hangover the next day, too."

Marijuana sales among Gen Z women in particular have more than doubled since the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in 2020, according to Headset, a cannabis analytics firm.

At Work 'N' Roll, alcohol is prohibited, but it's perfectly fine to bring your own cannabis or have it delivered to your door.

But not everyone sees the uptick in marijuana use as positive, including addiction psychiatrist Colin Reiff.

Reiff points to a recent National Institute of Health study that associates schizophrenia with excessive cannabis use among some young people, especially young men, at an age when their brains are still maturing.

"The legalized age for cannabis should be around 33 years old, when people are outside the window of developing schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and a lot of other things," Reiff said. "Or most certainly it should be after 26, once the prefrontal cortex is done developing."

Cannabis has also become more potent over the years. The average level of THC, the main compound in marijuana that triggers its psychoactive effects, jumped from 4% in 1995 to more than 15% in 2021, a four-fold increase, according to the latest figures from the University of Mississippi's potency monitoring project.

But for Everett, those numbers don't tell the whole story.

"Over time, as I started educating my parents more, they started to understand that cannabis was less destructive to my lifestyle than alcohol, and I even got them to try cannabis," Everett said.

When asked how that went, Everett said, "They enjoyed it. My mom, she had cancer and it helped to alleviate some of her symptoms, and for my dad's part, he thought it was pretty fun."

For Golda Moldavsky and Ellis Sudak, two other Work 'N' Roll patrons in their twenties, alcohol just isn't missed.

"I never thought about it not being here, honestly," Moldavsky said.

"I don't miss it," Sudak said.
