All About the Pentatonix Members' Partners

The group has become like a family over the years, and that family is expanding as many get married and have kids

Meet the partners of the Pentatonix singers.

Since winning The Sing-Off in 2011, the group has developed an impressive career in the years since, including three Grammy Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

And the group's members, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Scott Hoying, Kevin Olusola and Matt Sallee, have developed a close-knit bond with each other over the years.

“The cohesiveness of our team has grown so much,” Olusola told EW in 2014 , with Hoying adding, “We’re like a family. We get along really well. And we’re able to work together really well.”

While the group has become like a family over the years, many of them have actually started families of their own. In addition to getting married, some have also become parents (and have even taken their broods on the road with them).

Here’s everything to know about the partners of Pentatonix.

Kevin Olusola

Leigh Olusola/ Instagram

Kevin Olusola is married to Leigh Weissman. The couple first met through a mutual friend in 2017 and tied the knot in September 2019 at the Hummingbird Nest Ranch in Simi Valley, California.

Olusola and Weissman were married over two days, first hosting 225 guests at the American-style wedding — including Olusola's group mates Grassi, Hoying, Maldonado and Sallee — and then 165 at the traditional Nigerian wedding. Their rehearsal dinner doubled as a traditional Nigerian ceremony to pay respect to the groom's heritage on his father's side.

Following their nuptials, the couple told PEOPLE they were most excited about "creating a legacy and a life together and starting a family in the next few years.” They added, “We are both just so excited to have our absolute best friend as a spouse as we enjoy this crazy journey we call life."

In April 2021, Olusola revealed that he and Weissman welcomed their first child together , a baby girl named Kaia Noelle. “I am so unbelievably proud to announce that I became a father this weekend,” he wrote on Instagram at the time. “Kaia, your mommy & daddy love you more than words can describe. And God, thank you for entrusting Leigh and me as her parents. We’re so excited for our new adventures officially as The Olusola Family!!”

Though the couple keeps their daughter out of the spotlight, Olusola has given a few sweet glimpses of their family life on social media. In addition to going on the tour with Pentatonix , Olusola’s little girl was by his side as the group was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .

Kirstin Maldonado

Kirstin Maldonado is married to filmmaker and photographer Ben Hausdorff. The two started dating in 2018 and Hausdorff has worked with Maldonado on various Pentatonix projects, including shooting some of the group’s music videos .

In June 2022, the couple welcomed their first child together, a baby girl named Elliana Violet. “After a bit of an unexpected and difficult delivery, we finally got to meet our beautiful baby girl 6/28/22 and have been so over the moon in love with her,” Maldonado wrote on Instagram at the time. “Your mommy and daddy feel so lucky to have you and love you SO much, it’s insane!! We had no idea our hearts could expand this much. You are worth everything and more. Welcome to the family, sweet Evie baby.”

In March 2023, Maldonado revealed that she and Hausdorff got engaged in Japan. “well now japan is forever cemented as the best place in the whole wide world!” she wrote on Instagram to announce the news. “will miss you all SO much! thank you for beautiful, heartfelt shows. can’t believe i got engaged in tokyo!!! minna saiko! munega candode ippai desu! @hausdo … aishiteru! Itsumo!”

A few months later, Maldonado opened up to PEOPLE about bringing her baby girl on the road with her, noting that one of the "coolest" parts was getting to witness her milestones across the globe. "We're in different places all the time which makes those memories stronger in a way," she shared. "Her first train was in Japan, the bullet train, and first crawls in Fiji. It feels like she is the most well-traveled baby at this age — maybe ever."

She added that her fellow Pentatonix members and Hausdorff, who is also the videographer on tour, had been super supportive about bringing her baby girl on the road.

"I feel like Kevin gives her love because he's a dad, so he's always engaging her. Matt's always picking her up and loving on her, and Mitch is always being sweet. Scott is, like, remixing all her baby tunes," she said. "They all get really awesome time with her. She's definitely a very loved baby, obviously, from parents, but also from the entire tour. It's awesome.”

On April 21, 2024, Maldonado and Hausdorff got married at D'Vine Grace Vineyard in McKinney, Texas. They were joined by 175 guests including Maldonado's bandmates. “I think we've finally caught up to our relationship or our relationship has finally caught up to where we are,” Hausdorff told PEOPLE exclusively of becoming husband and wife. “And I think there's something special about that. Just being like, yes, ‘My wife!’ and this is our life, and this is our daughter, and that's it.”

Maldonado agreed, calling the ceremony an “official stamp” on what’s always been there.

Matt Sallee

Matt Sallee/ Instagram

Matt Sallee is married to Sarah Bishop. The couple dated for over two years before tying the knot in January 2022 at Cielo Farms in Malibu, California. For the romantic ceremony, they were joined by their closest family and friends, including Sallee’s group mates.

"We both knew pretty much after our first date that the connection was rare and special," the couple told PEOPLE about their instant bond. "We'd both separately been praying for our life partners and knew that this wasn't a coincidence, and our walk on the moonlit beach that night solidified it."

Since becoming husband and wife, the couple has given many glimpses of their sweet relationship, including cheering each other on in their personal endeavors.

In May 2023, Sallee penned a sweet tribute to his wife as she graduated from law school, calling himself “One Lucky Husband.” Meanwhile, Bishop has been by Sallee’s side for many Pentatonix events, including the 2023 Grammy Awards and the group’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony.

In May 2024, the couple announced that they are expecting a baby girl together as they shared a cute video of them from their baby's sex reveal party.

Scott Hoying

Amy Sussman/Getty

Scott Hoying is married to Mark Manio. The couple first met in Los Angeles in 2017 at a friend's birthday party where it was love at first sight for Hoying. "We talked the whole night and really hit it off," he recalled to PEOPLE. "We started hanging every single day, and I remember being blown away at how warm, wholesome and sweet Mark was. It was such a refreshing energy that I couldn’t get enough of. People always say that six years later, we still haven’t lost our 'honeymoon phase,' and we couldn't agree more."

Hoying later popped the question in the Bahamas in April 2022, with the singer telling PEOPLE it was the “most nerve-wracking thing that I've ever done in my life ... Even though Mark and I had talked about [the engagement] a million times, I still put the pressure on myself to make it perfect."

When it came to planning their wedding , Hoying told PEOPLE he actually enlisted help from his group mates. “I keep asking Kevin and Matt for advice because they both had perfect, iconic weddings. They're like, ‘Yep, so many decisions to be made.’ But it's going well,” he said in May 2023.

“All of my fiancé Mark's 100 Filipino family [members] are going to be there and then all my 150 of my friends throughout my whole life, and then my bandmates," he added of the guest list. "It's going to be a really special moment where everyone I love the most is in one place to celebrate the biggest day of Mark and my life. I'm just so excited.”

The couple eventually tied the knot in July 2023 during a seaside ceremony in Santa Barbara, California. For their first dance, the couple asked Loren Allred to perform "Never Enough" from The Greatest Showman . Hoying also surprised Manio with a performance of his new song "Four," which the singer wrote for the model after their engagement.

"The song is one of my favorite songs I have ever written, as it is a love letter I dedicated to Mark after we had dated for four years, and I can barely sing it without crying," he told PEOPLE.

In addition to having his Pentatonix group mates in attendance, the wedding also included Colton Haynes, Adam Rippon, Brittany Broski, Randy Jackson and Betty Who.

Mitch Grassi

Gabe Ginsberg/Getty

Mitch Grassi keeps his dating life fairly private and his social media posts are predominantly about his music. Though Grassi doesn’t talk much about his romantic life, it does play a role in his music.

While discussing his solo EP Roses , which he released under the name Messer, he told Intersect Magazine the project was meant to be a “homage to romanticism, love, and knowledge of self.”

Since emerging in 2011, the three-time GRAMMY® Award-winning and Daytime EMMY® Award-nominated vocal quintet—Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Matt Sallee—have reached unprecedented heights, toppling charts, selling 10 million albums worldwide, generating billions of streams, and performing everywhere from The White House and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to The Hollywood Bowl. Their catalog boasts back-to-back #1 albums on the Billboard 200, namely the gold-certified Pentatonix [2015] and platinum-certified A Pentatonix Christmas [2016]. Internationally, these albums performed equally as well with five albums being certified gold, platinum, or double platinum in Canada and ranking in the top 40 albums six times in New Zealand. Their single, “Hallelujah” also reached international acclaim as a platinum-certified single in Canada and gold-certified in Germany and Switzerland. They notably made history as “the first a cappella act to win ‘Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella’ at the GRAMMY ® Awards” in 2015 and 2016. A year later, they earned another GRAMMY® Award in the category “Best Country Duo/Group Performance” for their duet with Dolly Parton on her song “Jolene.”  Along the way, the collective also graced the stage of The Kennedy Center Honors for Tom Hanks, covering “That Thing You Do” as President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama watched from the crowd. Plus, they have collaborated with Kelly Clarkson, Dolly Parton, Miley Cyrus, and Lindsey Stirling, to name a few. Beyond standout awards show and late-night television appearances, Pentatonix leapt onto the big screen with a cameo in the blockbuster Pitch Perfect 2 . Not to mention, they have supported organizations such as Make A Wish, Do it for the Love Foundation, and more. Following 2021’s Evergreen , which tallied over 100 million streams, they launched one of their biggest tours to date, Pentatonix: The Evergreen Christmas Tour . Pentatonix’s most recent album, “Holidays Around the World,” was released on October 28, 2022 and marked the group’s ninth Top 10 entry on Billboard’s Top Holiday Albums Chart. The group closed out 2022 with the completion of their largest U.S. arena tour to date.

Pentatonix Members: Get to Know the Founders and the New Additions to the Group

Reese Watson - Author

Feb. 6 2024, Updated 12:15 p.m. ET

Around 2010, a capella hit the United States hard . An already established form of vocal work that had seen brief popularity in the 1960s, a cappella went mainstream through different forms of media entertainment, most notably with the 2012 film Pitch Perfect .

Lasting effects of a cappella included a love for Anna Kendrick, the a cappella music competition program The Sing-Off , and the musical group Pentatonix .

'The Sing-Off' launched Pentatonix into fame and into our playlists.

For those who kept up with the music scene, you’ll recall that season three of NBC’s The Sing-Off resulted in the formation and popularity of Pentatonix, and ultimately their win.

Since their 2011 victory, they have released a total of six studio albums and sold over 10 million albums internationally. Each release has made it to the Billboard Charts Top 10 lists.

Pentatonix in 2011.

The group has been nominated for awards countless times, taking home three Grammys and two YouTube music awards.

They are best known for their renditions of “Hallelujah” and “Daft Punk,” and have become highly sought after Christmas music staples. The group even made a cameo in Pitch Perfect 2

So, who are the members of Pentatonix?

The members of Pentatonix have remained the same since the beginning, with the “exchange” of one new member in 2017.

Scott Hoying (Baritone)

Born September 17, 1991, in Arlington, Texas, Scott is a founding member of Pentatonix. He not only gave the group their name but also recruited its first two members, friends Mitch Grassi and Kristin Maldonado . He is also a member of Superfruit with Mitch Grassi, a comedy music duo.

Scott plays piano and was heavily involved in theater arts growing up. He recently made light of his difficult quarantine experience by performing a parody of “ I Dreamed a Dream ” from the musical Les Miserables.

Mitch Grassi (Countertenor/Tenor)

Mitchell (Mitch) Grassi was born on July 24, 1992, and is one of Scott’s childhood friends. He is a founding member of Pentatonix and the other half of Superfruit.

Mitch recently broke out into the DJ scene, debuting a series of dark techno tunes over the COVID-19 quarantine season. A fan of fashion, he discussed in depth in an interview with Paper how working with stylist Austin Macedo helped develop his own personal, experimental style. Mitch is vegan and a proud member and supporter of the LGBTQA+ community.

Like Scott, Mitch plays the piano.

Kirstin Maldonado (Mezzo-Soprano)

Kirstin Maldonado was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on May 16, 1992. She is a founding member of Pentatonix and one of Mitch and Scott’s childhood friends. Kirstin was part of the original “ Telephone ” video that brought Scott, Mitch, and herself internet recognition before The Sing-Off audition.

A year after the launch of her solo career in 2017, she landed her first Broadway role in Kinky Boots alongside Wayne Brady in 2018. She recently performed “Look What You Made Me Do” on Lip Sync Battle .

Kevin Olusola (Beatboxer)

Kevin Olusola is credited with developing the art of cello boxing, beatboxing while playing the cello. Born October 5, 1988, he attended Yale University and knows how to speak Mandarin. He was a lead cellist for the Yale Symphony Orchestra and has appeared on stage at Carnegie Hall playing both piano and alto saxophone.

Kevin was asked to join Pentatonix after the founding members realized they needed two more people. After his cello boxing version of “ Julie-O ” by Mark Summers went viral, he was contacted by Scott. He married Leigh Weissman in 2017.

Matt Sallee (Bass)

Matt Sallee joined Pentatonix as bass vocalist after the departure of Avriel “Avi” Kaplan in 2017. Matt was born on February 11, 1994, in Baltimore. He started singing at the age of four and is classically trained in voice. He has performed in choirs at the Kennedy Center and Apollo Theater, to name a few.

Matt just released a worship album titled Make Way from E58 Worship , and is a worship director at his local church.

Avi Kaplan (Bass)

California-born Avi was asked to join Pentatonix along with Kevin Olusola. He is trained in jazz and opera and plays guitar. He left the group in 2017 and pursued a solo career. He now tours under Avriel & The Sequoias and is signed to Fantasy Records.

After winning back-to-back-to-back GRAMMY Awards at the 57th , 58th , and 59th GRAMMY Awards , Pentatonix eased off the gas pedal long enough for Mitch Grassi and Scott Hoying to pursue their pop-duo side project, Superfruit and Kristin Maldonado to prepare for her Broadway debut . New Music Friday: Listen to Songs From Megan Thee Stallion, Camila Cabello & Lil Nas X, BTS' RM & More

May 10 is quite the stacked day of new music across all genres — from Post Malone & Morgan Wallen's country collab, to Stray Kids' team-up with Charlie Puth, to The Chainsmokers and Kings of Leon. Check out some fresh releases to enjoy this weekend here.

As the summer quickly approaches, artists from every genre continue to unveil new music for warmer weather. Friday May 10 is particularly packed with anticipated and surprise releases from both emerging talents and established names.

The new albums alone prove just that: pop songsmith Alec Benjamin 's 12 Notes , folk-rock band Judah & the Lion 's The Process , regional Mexican stars Grupo Frontera's Jugando a Que No Pasa Nada , and GRAMMY-winning R&B singer Andra Day 's Cassandra , to name a few.

Meanwhile, a big, cool glass of major rap releases is here to help wash down the piping hot Kendrick and Drake beef served up over the last week. Full album releases debuted from Gunna , Chief Keef , and Ghostface Killah — the latter featuring guest spots from Nas , Kanye West , Raekwon , Method Man and more. Hottie Megan Thee Stallion 's powerful new single, "BOA", sets the stage for her Hot Girl Summer tour which officially starts on May 14. New songs from Ice Spice , Kodak Black , NLE Choppa , Coi Leray , G-Eazy , Yung Gravy , Ski Mask the Slump God set the playlist for a weekend full of slappers.

There's tons of collaborations, too, including the much-teased pairing of Post Malone and Morgan Wallen with "I Had Some Help," a track that showcases Malone's furtherance into country in a catchy, reflective anthem. But country music lovers also have more to enjoy this weekend: Orville Peck 's duets project, Stampede Vol.1 , features the likes of Willie Nelson and Elton John ," while Scotty McCreery's Rise & Fall and Avery Anna's single "Blonde" fill the fuel tank for a rodeo-ready summer.

BTS 's RM delivers another solo track "Come Back to Me" and Stray Kids dropped a new collaboration with Charlie Puth , coming fresh off the K-pop group's appearance at the Met Gala earlier this week. And the electronic and rock scenes are not left behind, with A.G. Cook exploring a new twist on Britpop and Sebastian Bach's release of Child Within The Man .

Dive into today's releases from Megan Thee Stallion, The Chainsmokers , RM, Stray Kids with Charlie Puth , Camila Cabello with Lil Nas X , Post Malone and Morgan Wallen below.

Megan Thee Stallion, "BOA"

Megan Thee Stallion's new single "BOA" continues to play up the themes of empowerment and self-realization that define her current musical phase and comes just days ahead of her Hot Girl Summer Tour starting on May 14. The song's cover art features Megan with a striking snake, a recurring symbol of rebirth that has been significant in her recent work, appearing in tracks like the Billboard Hot 100 hit "Hiss" and the 2023 song "Cobra."

"BOA" is a continuation of Megan's snake-themed narrative, but serves as a saccharine homage to her favorite late-'90s and early 2000s anime and video game classics. The music video features references to Scott Pilgrim, One Piece, Dance Dance Revolution, and iconic 3D fighting games like Mortal Kombat, complete with visuals and Gantz-inspired outfits.

Speaking to Women's Health about her upcoming summer album, Megan discussed the personal growth and renewal she has experienced, inspiring this new era of music. "I was inspired to create this album about rebirth because I feel I am becoming a new person physically and mentally," she shared.

Camila Cabello & Lil Nas X, "HE KNOWS"

Camila Cabello teams up with Lil Nas X for the tantalizing new song "He Knows," delivering a radio-friendly track that's as catchy as it is lustful. The new music mirrors the infectious energy of their recent appearance at FKA Twigs' Met Gala afterparty, where they both were seen dancing the night away behind the DJ booth.

"He Knows" serves as a precursor to Cabello's highly anticipated fourth solo album, C,XOXO , — set to drop on June 28 — and teases a glimpse of Cabello's evolving artistic direction. The single follows on the heels of her recent hit "I LUV IT" featuring Playboi Carti, part of the  reimagining of her sound and artistic brand.

RM, "Come Back To Me"

BTS member RM has released a new single, "Come Back To Me," accompanied by a music video. The relaxed track gives fans a taste of his upcoming second solo album, Right Place, Wrong Person , set to release on May 24.

In the song, RM explores themes of right and wrong, capturing the complex emotions of wanting to explore new avenues while wishing to stay comfortable in the present. "Come Back To Me" features contributions from OHHYUK of the South Korean band HYUKOH, and Kuo of the Taiwanese band Sunset Rollercoaster. Additional credits include JNKYRD and San Yawn from Balming Tiger. RM first performed "Come Back To Me" during a surprise appearance at BTS bandmate Suga 's concert in Seoul last summer, noting it as a favorite from his forthcoming album.

The music video for "Come Back To Me" was written, directed, and produced by Lee Sung Jin, known for his work on the Netflix show "Beef." The video features actress Kim Minha from the Apple TV+ series "Pachinko" and faces themes of identity and self-reflection, showing RM confronting different versions of himself. Its cast includes notable Korean and American actors such as Joseph Lee, Lee Sukhyeong, and Kim A Hyun.

Post Malone & Morgan Wallen, "I Had Some Help"

Post Malone and Morgan Wallen blend their distinct musical styles in the much-anticipated release of their collaborative single "I Had Some Help." Merging Malone's versatile pop sensibilities while leaning into his country roots with Wallen's, well, help, the duet is a unique crossover that has had fans clamoring to hear more since the two first teased the song earlier this year.

Finally premiering during Wallen's headlining performance at Stagecoach Festival on April 28, the uptempo song explores themes of mutual support and shared experiences, encapsulated by the lyric, "It ain't like I can make this kind of mess all by myself."

The collaboration has sparked significant buzz and showcases the duo's chemistry and shared knack for storytelling. This single highlights their individual talents as well as their ability to bridge genre divides, already promising to be a hit on the charts and a favorite among fans.

The Chainsmokers, No Hard Feelings

Maestros of mainstream emotion, The Chainsmokers continue to master the art of turning personal reflections into global anthems with their latest EP, No Hard Feelings . The six-song project see Alex Pall and Drew Taggart exploring the emotional highs and lows of modern relationships, weaving their signature dance beats with pop sensibilities as they have since 2015's "Roses."

The duo's latest release serves as a soundtrack to both sun-kissed days and introspective nights. The collection includes the single "Friday," a collaboration with Haitian-American singer Fridayy, described by the duo as a direct descendant of "Roses." Other tracks, such as "Addicted," also underscore the Chainsmokers' knack for capturing the zeitgeist of contemporary love and loss.

Kings of Leon, Can We Please Have Fun

Kings of Leon return with their signature blend of rock and introspection on their ninth studio album, Can We Please Have Fun . The LP finds the band infusing their established sound with fresh, unbridled energy, reminiscent of their early days yet matured by years of experience. The album features standout tracks like "Mustang" and "Nothing To Do," which mix playful lyrics with serious musical chops, showcasing Kings of Leon's unique ability to combine rock's raw power with catchy, thoughtful songwriting.

The band is set to bring Can We Please Have Fun to life on their 2024 world tour, starting in Leeds, United Kingdom on June 20 and wrapping in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on Oct. 5. Fans can expect a high-energy series of performances that blend new tracks with beloved classics, all delivered with the Kings of Leon's legendary fervor.

Stray Kids & Charlie Puth, "Lose My Breath"

Stray Kids have teamed up with Charlie Puth for their latest release, "Lose My Breath," a track that blends K-pop dynamism with Western pop flair, written by Stray Kids' own producer team 3racha (Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han) along with Puth. The TK song details a whirlwind of emotions, describing symptoms of breathlessness and heart-palpitating moments encapsulated in the lyrics: "I lose my breath when you're walking in/ 'Cause when our eyes lock, it's like my heart stops."

"Lose My Breath" is described as a "warm-up" for Stray Kids' forthcoming album, set for release this summer. The track further highlights the global appeal of Stray Kids ahead of their highly anticipated headlining set at Lollapalooza in August. It also continues Puth's engagement with K-pop, following his previous work with other K-pop acts including his collab with BTS' Jungkook , "Left and Right," and "Like That," a song he co-wrote for K-pop girl group BABYMONSTER .

Meet 5 GRAMMY Nominees Who Started At GRAMMY U: From Boygenius Engineer Sarah Tudzin To Pentatonix’s Scott Hoying

For nearly 20 years, emerging music industry creatives have cycled through GRAMMY U, the Recording Academy’s program for young people aspiring to work in the music industry. Below, meet the five GRAMMY U alumni who are nominated at the 2024 GRAMMYs.

Cathryn Flores co-authored this article.

Since 2006, GRAMMY U has been dedicated to nurturing the next generation of music professionals by connecting aspiring members with the industry's brightest and most talented minds. With its recent membership expansion , GRAMMY U continues to grow and establish a diverse community of students and young professionals.

GRAMMY U members have the unique opportunity to collaborate with GRAMMY nominees and professionals across various sectors of the music industry, including affiliates of the Recording Academy’s Producers & Engineers Wing and Songwriters & Composers Wing . Annual programming includes the Mentorship Program , GRAMMY U Fall Summit , activations at GRAMMY Week , and the GRAMMY U Conference as well as dozens of local programs nationwide.

During their time at GRAMMY U, members get the chance to connect with their peers and receive hands-on experience. A significant number of program alumni continue their journey in the music industry as voting members of the Recording Academy, featured panelists at future GRAMMY U events, and mentors.

Many alumni go on to become GRAMMY nominees and winners themselves — and the 2024 GRAMMYs highlight their successes. At Music's Biggest Night, former GRAMMY U Members Sarah Tudzin, who engineered for boygenius , and Pentatonix co-founder Scott Hoying are nominated at the 66th GRAMMY Awards .

From songwriters to producers, read on to learn about the five current and former GRAMMY U members who are nominated for the 66th GRAMMY Awards.

Scott Hoying

Nominated work: Pentatonix - Holidays Around The World (Best Traditional Pop Album)

Pentatonix co-founder Scott Hoying is in the running for Best Pop Traditional Vocal Album for Holidays Around The World . Hoying previously took home a golden gramophone with his hit a capella group at the 2017 GRAMMYs for Best Country Duo/Group Performance with Dolly Parton for "Jolene."

"Being able to collaborate with so many incredible artists around the world was a fascinating process and was so fulfilling. This was truly an experience where we got to feel the universal language of music first-hand," Hoying says. "It is one of our favorite albums, and to see it recognized and honored in such an iconic way from our peers in the music industry is a dream."

Hoying joined GRAMMY U while he was a music major at the University of Southern California.

"The second I was eligible to be a GRAMMY U member, I signed up immediately. I remember feeling so excited to be a part of the GRAMMY foundation," Hoying recalls. "Signing up for GRAMMY U felt like the first step towards manifesting that vision board.

"Fast-forward 10 years, three GRAMMYs and five nominations [later], it feels surreal. I just feel like the luckiest person in the world and we are so honored," he says.

Sarah Tudzin

Nominated work: boygenius - the record (Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical)

Sarah Tudzin joined GRAMMY U in college to learn more about the GRAMMY process at a professional level. Since, her band illuminati hotties has opened for acts such as Death Cab For Cutie and Carly Rae Jepsen . This year, she secured her GRAMMY-nominated status as a producer and engineer for her work on boygenius ' hit debut album the record, which is nominated for Album Of The Year and Best Alternative Music Album.

Tudzin didn’t know what to expect when boygenius called her into the studio session, but found comfort in the fact that its members are both her friends and her heroes. The musician sees her nomination as a measure of huge accomplishment, but also says that this is only the beginning of it all.

"To be a witness to boygenius' meteoric rise is such an honor and I feel deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to work with them and with number one production wizard, Catherine Marks ," Tudzin says. "I spent so many years cutting my teeth as an assistant and engineer and I'm so proud to have a credit of this caliber."

Elyse Victoria Johnson

Nominated work: Stanley Brown feat. Hezekiah Walker, Kierra Sheard & Karen Clark Sheard - "God Is Good" (Best Gospel Performance/Song)

Current GRAMMY U member and first-time GRAMMY nominee Elyse Victoria Johnson is nominated in the category of Best Gospel Performance/Song for her songwriting contributions to Stanley Brown ’s "God Is Good." Elyse’s background as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist led her to pursue a music industry major at the State University of New York College at Oneonta, where she also served as a GRAMMY U Ambassador.

" It was a great experience serving as an advocate for the GRAMMY U program to increase student membership on my college campus," the 22 year old says. "Now, in 2023. I am a GRAMMY-nominated songwriter. Every experience has played a part in where I am today."

"God is Good" is an uplifting anthem that radiates a message of positivity in difficult times.

"‘God Is Good’ comes from the popular call & response saying, ‘God is good all the time & all the time, God is good.’ It’s such a fun, inspirational, uplifting bop!" she shares. "This reflects my progression as a songwriter/artist because it gave me the opportunity to grow as a creative… I am constantly learning and growing, and there’s never a time where I am not a student!"

Whitney Wolanin

Nominated work: Tyler Childers - "In Your Love" (Best Music Video)

As a GRAMMY U member at Vanderbilt University, Whitney Wolanin had no idea she would be working in film after college. A musician herself, Wolanin transitioned to producing and directing everything from commercials to music videos. Wolanin expressed her gratitude for getting to tell stories in different audio and visual mediums.

Wolanin worked as the line producer and a general producer on Tyler Childers' video for "In Your Love," which is nominated for Best Music Video. The song itself is also nominated for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance.

Wolanin believes that finding a strong team is crucial to keep everything running smoothly.

"Producing ‘In Your Love’ felt really important, both in terms of story and its broader implications to society," Wolanin says. "This specific love story is just so beautiful and needs to be told in country music. It felt special from the get-go and I hope it makes everyone cry, just like it does for me each time I watch it. "

Nominated work: AleMor - Beautiful Humans, Vol. 1 (Best Latin Pop Album)

Manu Beker’s musical journey has gone full circle with the Recording Academy. In 2022, he won GRAMMY U's Masterclass Contest with his song "Cliché" and met his future collaborator, AleMor , on that same day.

Beker contributed to AleMor’s Beautiful Humans Vol. 1 ., which is nominated for Best Latin Pop Album at the 66th GRAMMY Awards. Beker hopes his work shows that Latin music can take form in any sub-genre and should not be constrained to a singular style.

"A lot of people pigeonhole music in Spanish and think it has to sound like a cliché… that it has to sound folky or like salsa/cumbia," Beker says. "But I'm hoping more people will listen to albums like [ Beautiful Humans Vol. 1 ] and realize that Latin music is as varied and diverse as any other genre."

Beker recognizes the importance of constantly adapting within the industry and creating impactful connections with the artists he works with. He described the entire GRAMMY U experience with AleMor as surreal and hopes to continue making contributions within the Latin music community.

Wicked Broadway Show

20 Years Of 'Wicked': On This Day, The Culture-Shifting, GRAMMY-Winning Musical Premiered

Twenty years after its premiere on Broadway, the deliciously corrupted musical 'Wicked' is still going strong.

Twenty years ago, the Broadway-shaking musical 'Wicked' opened its doors in New York City — and the theatre world was never the same.

Based on Gregory Maguire's book Wicked: The Life And Times Of The Wicked Witch Of The West — itself influenced by L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz — the musical debuted on Broadway on Oct. 30, 2003, six months after it premiered in San Francisco, California on May 28. Two years later, the musical was honored by the world's leading society of music people; it won the golden gramophone for Best Musical Theatre Album at the 2005 GRAMMYs. Fifteen years and numberless inspired performances after its premiere, Ariana Grande , Ledisi and Adam Lambert as well as GRAMMY winners Pentatonix performed with original cast members Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth to celebrate 'Wicked,' in a performance dubbed the "Wicked 15 Anniversary Concert."

Also back in 2018, the play about the green witch named Elphaba also garnered a special called A Very Wicked Halloween , starring the aforementioned musical luminaries.

"The themes of the show, the love and friendship aspects," "Wicked" star Kristin Chenoweth told the San Francisco Chronicle at the time. "We can look at these two characters looking forward to seeing everything."

For Mitch Grassi from Pentatonix, it was a full-circle moment for him to perform in the special. "It's a full circle moment, we grew up with this show and the [album] kind of shaped us as performers," Grassi told Playbill .

** 'Wicked' is still on Broadway — and is about to be on the silver screen! On Nov. 27, 2024, Cynthia Erivo and Grande will star in Wicked: Part One , a film adaptation of the play. (The sequel, Part Two , is scheduled to release on Nov. 26, 2025.) **

And on the stage proper, the team behind 'Wicked' is plotting a special anniversary show at the Gershwin Theatre — and on Oct. 30, the anniversary proper, the Empire State Building will light up green in commemoration of the show.

On Halloween, the New York Public Library will hold a free panel discussion about the musical, featuring panelists in book writer Winnie Holzman, producer David Stone and composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz.

And after spooky season concludes, traveling iterations of the show will continue to roll on throughout the world — with a home base in London providing the (slightly altered) experience for Wicked fans in the United Kingdom.

Whether or not you're able to catch the film, these celebration shows, or just a good old performance, keep a little wickedness in your heart in tribute this Halloween!

GRAMMY Rewind: Kendrick Lamar Honors Hip-Hop's Greats While Accepting Best Rap Album GRAMMY For 'To Pimp a Butterfly' In 2016

Upon winning the GRAMMY for Best Rap Album for 'To Pimp a Butterfly,' Kendrick Lamar thanked those that helped him get to the stage, and the artists that blazed the trail for him.

Updated Friday Oct. 13, 2023 to include info about Kendrick Lamar's most recent GRAMMY wins, as of the 2023 GRAMMYs.

A GRAMMY veteran these days, Kendrick Lamar has won 17 GRAMMYs and has received 47 GRAMMY nominations overall. A sizable chunk of his trophies came from the 58th annual GRAMMY Awards in 2016, when he walked away with five — including his first-ever win in the Best Rap Album category.

This installment of GRAMMY Rewind turns back the clock to 2016, revisiting Lamar's acceptance speech upon winning Best Rap Album for To Pimp A Butterfly . Though Lamar was alone on stage, he made it clear that he wouldn't be at the top of his game without the help of a broad support system.

"First off, all glory to God, that's for sure," he said, kicking off a speech that went on to thank his parents, who he described as his "those who gave me the responsibility of knowing, of accepting the good with the bad."

Looking for more GRAMMYs news? The 2024 GRAMMY nominations are here!

He also extended his love and gratitude to his fiancée, Whitney Alford, and shouted out his Top Dawg Entertainment labelmates. Lamar specifically praised Top Dawg's CEO, Anthony Tiffith, for finding and developing raw talent that might not otherwise get the chance to pursue their musical dreams.

"We'd never forget that: Taking these kids out of the projects, out of Compton, and putting them right here on this stage, to be the best that they can be," Lamar — a Compton native himself — continued, leading into an impassioned conclusion spotlighting some of the cornerstone rap albums that came before To Pimp a Butterfly .

"Hip-hop. Ice Cube . This is for hip-hop," he said. "This is for Snoop Dogg , Doggystyle . This is for Illmatic , this is for Nas . We will live forever. Believe that."

To Pimp a Butterfly singles "Alright" and "These Walls" earned Lamar three more GRAMMYs that night, the former winning Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song and the latter taking Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (the song features Bilal , Anna Wise and Thundercat ). He also won Best Music Video for the remix of Taylor Swift 's "Bad Blood."

Lamar has since won Best Rap Album two more times, taking home the golden gramophone in 2018 for his blockbuster LP DAMN ., and in 2023 for his bold fifth album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers .

Watch Lamar's full acceptance speech above, and check back at GRAMMY.com every Friday for more GRAMMY Rewind episodes.

From Nov. 27 to Dec. 23, Scott Hoying , Mitch Grassi ,  Kirstin Maldonado ,  Kevin Olusola  and  Matt Sallee will sing your favorite hits for the season in venues across the country.

"It's one of our biggest shows we've ever done," Scott teased to E! News. "It's our longest Christmas setlist and we do all the big powerful ballads and then we also have a lot of fun doing classic Christmas moments. It's going to be a lot of fun."

As Pentatonix 's Evergreen Christmas tour takes off, the group is giving E! News an exclusive backstage pass to all the fun. "We started out just doing it for fun as friends," Scott Hoying told E! News. "We were just choir nerds. It was weird that just one thing after another kept happening and ironically, I think because we just did it as friends, it came across so organic and amazing and I feel like still we're living this dream."

"We have an amazing stylist named Candice Lambert  and she kind of helped put everything together and she's really good about letting us all shine in our own individual styles, but also keeping it pretty seamless," Kirstin Maldonado told E! News. "I love the tour outfits!"

"I love the Christmas shows because we do get to wear more gowns, we get to dress a little more elegant and I think for this particular tour, we've had brief conversations about kind of making it maybe feel retro at times,"   Scott teased to E! News. "Maybe some '70s looks."

"We'll also find any fun thing that we can do at each venue," Scott explained. "If they have a ping-pong table. we're having a full-on ping-pong tournament. If they have a little arcade machine, we'll spend time with that. It feels like a summer camp where we just do whatever we're feeling in the moment and we laugh, we hang out, we try to soak in the fact that we're living this dream life."

"I think that this show is for everyone," Scott said. "We have moments that are for kids. It is very warm and fuzzy feelings. It's great for families. It's also great for a date night. I've always been really proud being in Pentatonix because of the multigenerational pull that we have at shows."

"We always love seeing families anyway at any of our shows, but I feel like this year in particular is going to be really, really beautiful," Kirstin told E! News. "So we hope we can make everyone happy."

Pentatonix is an American a cappella pop/soul group from Arlington, Texas consisting of Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstie Maldonado, Avi Kapian and Kevin Olusola.

Pentatonix was formed when Martin High School friends, Kirsten “Kirstie” Maldonado, Mitch Grassi and Scott Hoying came together to enter a contest to meet the cast of the television show, “Glee.” Together they arranged a version of Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” and even though they did not win the competition, they gained attention both locally and globally when they posted their version of the song on youtube.

After graduating from high school, the three members parted ways for separate colleges. While attending classes a University of Southern California, Hoying joined an a capella group called SoCal Vocals. It was during his time in this group that he heard about a television singing competition called “The Sing-Off.” This inspired Hoying to persuade Maldonado and Grassi to join together once again and enter the competition; however, the rules required a minimum of four people. This led to Hoying recruiting Kaplan, who had a highly recognized bass voice, to join the group as well. Eventually they also added Olusola, who had garnered attention through his youtube video of him simultaneously playing the cello and beatboxing. The group met the day before the competition and successfully auditioned for the show, eventually taking away the title.

After winning season three of the show, they were signed to Sony-owned Madison Gates Records. During the recording process, the group would post up some of the cover songs to their youtube account, some of which went on to go viral. By January 2012 they released their first EP entitled “PTX, Volume 1,” which sold 20,000 copies in its first week. They followed up with a Christmas album later that same year, and they made many television appearances to promote both albums, and went on tour for most of early 2013. They released a second EP while on tour, all while simultaneously posting more videos of their cover songs on youtube. The release of their third studio album, “PTX Vol. III,” which was released in fall 2014, debuted at Number 5 on the Billboard Top 200 album charts.

Live reviews

I saw them in Syracuse, NY only about two hours from my town. I had the VIP Meet and Greet and I was so excited that I was literally shaking. The opportunity to talk with and take selfie's individually with each of the band members was amazing. They sang a song for us off mic such amazing a cappella and it was so wonderful!! We had an opportunity to have each of them sign one item. I had downloaded a candid picture from a Facebook post printed it out and had them sign it. What made this even more special was Matt telling me that that was a picture taken at their first gig when he joined the band.

We got a chance to have a picture taken with all 5 of them. I have not gotten access to it yet but that too was amazing. Then they did a sound check on stage with all of us in the pit area, followed by a Q&A session. I had the best time. Then the whole concert was amazing! I would so recommend seeing them live, and if you can save up and do one of the VIPs please do. I saw them once before in Pennsylvania for Avi's next to last show in the pouring rain after a 6 Hour drive. Obviously I loved it enough to go again.

Hugs to the band! This was AMAZING!

If you need a pick me up and want original sound and lyrics then go see Pentatonix live in concert. They are so awesome and amazingly good. I cannot believe how many original songs can come out of one group. They sing from their heart and you can honestly tell. Being as there is only one female in the group, it is easy to hear how angelic her voice really is. The other guys are amazing as well. The harmonies fit together so well. Pentatonix is just a down to earth group that is not looking to go over the top. Their concert stage is nothing more than the average stage.

They can capture the attention of a crowd on the first note that they sing. I remember standing there and hearing that first note and being like WOW! Such big voices and beautiful melodies. I get chills just thinking about the music they make. I enjoy all of their music and especially like when they sing covers of other artists. I m so glad that I decided to see them that day because it gave e a whole new experience and it was well worth the money. I definitely think everyone needs to see Pentatonix because they are very original and will not let you down.

Pentatonix is the collective name of the Texan acapella musicians who rose to prominence after their victory on the third season of The Sing-Off. The platform not only won them a huge prize fund, but also global recognition and a readymade fanbase. Their upbeat, jovial personalities and pop based songs could make even the most cynical person smile and tap their feet as their personality and music is simply infectious.

Although they are exclusively a cover band, the group still has chance to showcase their specific vocal abilities due to the range of tracks covered. Tonight they include classic songs such as 'Hit The Road Jack' and juxtapose this with a Lorde mash up of 'Team' and 'Royals'. This shows versatility and skill and really demonstrates how the five musicians all work together onstage, reacting and listening to each other. The highlight is a note perfect rendition of 'We Are Young' by Fun which sounds textured, dramatic and solid despite being made up entirely of acapella vocal notes. It is a type of singing that is lesser known nowadays yet Pentatonix seem intent on bringing it back.

After missing out on tickets last year (Trix/Antwerp) I was able to book tickets this time.

I've been a fan ever since I saw them on The Sing Off and last night I finally got to see them live.

My daughter had been nagging to tag along, and although it was a school night and she's not allowed to go out, I thought Pentatonix was the perfect exception.

What an experience, the songs we've been singing along with in the car for so long, finally we heard them live! And what a show! I just loved loved loved it and my daughter is an ever bigger fan than before last night.

Eventhough they're not that well known over here (yet), the venue was pretty packed and everyone was singing along and screaming. What a night.

I hope they'll come back next year, we'll certainly buy tickets again.

Pentatonix were amazing. It was great how they included the ordinance in their performance by choosing people to go on stage with them, it's a shame I wasn't picked but hey, at least someone else had the chance to. The only problem I had with it was that I knew nothing about a meet and greet and I would of loved to meet them which is a real shame. They were amazing live, sounded just like they do on the CD. I also like how they included other things other than A Capella like Kevin beat boxing with his Chello. My favorate bit was when they all put their microphones down and sang without them. It made me feel closer to them in some wierd way. Overall AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING. Definatley worth going. ❤️

Disclaimer: I'm probably biased because Pentatonix is my FAVORITE group ever! But, with that being said, the show was fantastic. We did the VIP with Meet & Greet and Sound Check before the show and it was such an experience. The members of Pentatonix are so humble and down to Earth, and they were so sweet to my 7 year old who was very nervous about meeting her idols. THe show itself was beyond amazing. Their voices are like nothing else, and their is no speaker in the world that can substitute hearing Avi's bass voice live. Of course, they were all on point and their energy was impressive. ANd, being the day before Halloween, they were all dressed in costumes, which just added to the fun :)

Absolutely amazing show. Production was great from the sound to the lights. Would recommend everyone to experience this show. For new and old fans alike this is a truly memorable event that cannot be forgotten. For a longtime fan like myself I was very pleased with the setlist and openers for the show. The combination of Rachel Platten and a capella band Citizen queen made the overall vibe of the show very happy and inspiring. To sum it up, do yourself a favor and attend this concert and let it blow your mind with how great it is.

When I got to the concert I thought it would be like the other concerts but what I didn't know was that they were going to sing a few songs from their 4th album and I can't wait for it to come out. This concert was different, in a good way. They changed the songs up a little and they just make everything better and all the nice things they say on stage, especially having the honor of them saying that we were all like Beyonce. They are just so amazing that I have no words to describe how amazing they are.

As one of the most innovative, inventive, and inimitable vocal groups of all time, Pentatonix reimagine, reinvigorate, and redefine a cappella. Since emerging in 2011, the three-time GRAMMY® Award-winning and Daytime EMMY® Award-nominated vocal quintet—Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Matt Sallee—have reached unprecedented heights, topping charts, selling 10 million albums worldwide, generating billions of streams, and performing everywhere from The White House and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to The Hollywood Bowl. Their single, “Hallelujah” also achieved international success as a platinum-certified single in Canada and gold-certified in Germany and Switzerland. They notably made history as “the first a cappella act to win ‘Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella’ at the GRAMMY® Awards” in 2015 and 2016. A year later, they earned another GRAMMY® Award in the category “Best Country Duo/Group Performance” for their duet with Dolly Parton on her song “Jolene.”

Scottie Scheffler's 41-round par-or-better streak ends with substitute caddie on bag at 2024 PGA Championship

The world's top-ranked golfer was without a crucial member of his team on saturday in louisville.

scottie-scheffler-2024-pga-championship-preview-g.jpg

Scottie Scheffler had answered just about every question thrown his way in 2024. Would he putt well enough to start winning tournaments? Yes. Would he claim another major championship? Yes. Would he play and contend the week following his Masters triumph? Yes. Would he be able to balance his personal and professional life with a new child on the way? Yes.

This week at the 2024 PGA Championship, he was thrown two more. How will he compete after being arrested and released following a chaotic traffic incident ahead of Friday's second round? Will he be able to play as well Saturday with his usual caddie missing from his bag for 18 holes?

Scheffler answered the former in the affirmative, shaking off that arrest to post a 5-under 66 on Friday and shoot his way up the leaderboard. As for the latter? Well, it's a bit of his unknown.

Whether it was the change in caddie, built-up exhaustion from his chaotic Friday or (likely) a combination of the two, Scheffler finished Moving Day with a 74. Shooting 3 over, he ended a streak over which he scored par or better across 41 straight rounds dating back to Aug. 26, 2023.

"I was definitely not feeling like myself today, for sure," Scheffler told CBS's Amanda Balionis after the round. "Yesterday happened, and I did my best to recover from it, and come out here and compete today. I did a great job yesterday of coming out and competing, riding the adrenaline. This morning was definitely not my usual routine for a round, if that makes sense. … I wasn't able to get it done, which is pretty frustrating, but I'll come back and try again tomorrow."

Steve Stricker set the PGA Tour record at 55 rounds last year, surpassing Tiger Woods' achievement of 53 straight rounds earlier in his career.

Scheffler revealed Tuesday that his bag man since late 2021, Ted Scott, would not lug his sticks around the par 71 Valhalla Golf Club on Saturday as Scott would instead attend his daughter's high school graduation. Scott flew out of Louisville on Friday evening after the second round with a plan to celebrate his daughter's achievement Saturday before return at some point in the evening evening to resume his duties for the final round Sunday.

"That's something we talked about from the beginning of our relationship was family always comes first, and it's the same thing for me as it is for my caddie," Scheffler explained. "It was a pretty easy decision. He told me at the beginning of this year that was the date that it was, so I got a backup caddie lined up. One of my buddies is going to carry the bag on Saturday, and then Ted will be back for Sunday's round."

In Scott's place, Brad Payne assumed the role as Scheffler's right-hand man for the third round. Payne currently serves as a PGA Tour chaplain after having played collegiate golf at Pepperdine University.

"It's one of my older friends who travels week to week out here," Scheffler said. "He's the Tour chaplain. His name is Brad, and he's caddying for me on Saturday. I trust him to rake a bunker more than my buddies."

The Rolling Stones Rehearsed 60 to 70 Songs for ‘Hackney Diamonds' Tour

Since 1982, when the Rolling Stones launched a European leg of their Tattoo You tour, lighting designer Patrick Woodroffe has gotten both a front-row seat and a backstage look at how Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and the rest of the band work on the road.

"The real privilege is to see them in rehearsal," he tells Rolling Stone on an early May Zoom from Arizona, a day before a Stones gig. "It's thrilling still, even after all this time. They always get together for at least three or four weeks to rehearse for a leg of the tour. No costumes, no stage set, no smoke and mirrors, no audience of course. They arrive separately in their own cars … They say hi and pick up their instruments, and somehow, they just start to play."

And they play and play and play, rehearsing decades-old concert staples like "Satisfaction" and "Gimme Shelter" as well as running through songs they can swap in and out of set lists on the fly. For the group's Hackney Diamonds Tour , which kicked off in Houston in April, the band spent a month practicing 60 to 70 songs in Los Angeles.

"It's crazy, isn't it?" says Woodroffe, who is creative director and lighting designer at Woodroffe Bassett Design. "They've always had really high standards, particularly about rehearsing, even during some of the more chaotic periods of their career. I see them in rehearsal as a small group of players just wanting to make their music."

Woodroffe's perspective on the Stones, of course, is starkly different to how the rest of the world sees the group. For the Hackney Diamonds run, concertgoers will watch Jagger on the production's nearly 46-foot-tall digital screens, as he and his bandmates traverse around a stage that's approximately 180 feet wide by 65 feet deep. In total, there are close to 2,300 square feet of high-resolution LED screens.

The stage itself, designed by Stufish Entertainment Architects, weighs 485,072 pounds - about the same weight as 71 of those angular, Tron -like Tesla Cybertrucks , to pick one comparison. The tour requires 200 touring personnel, 14 of whom are on the video crew, including six camera operators who make the Stones look literally larger than life.

The production concept for Hackney Diamonds was to create a "virtual stage" that can adapt as the show goes on. Where the look of the band's late-Eighties Steel Wheels tour was meant to evoke a dystopia and their mid-Nineties Voodoo Lounge tour reflected internet culture for the entirety of the concert, Hackney Diamonds changes from song to song, almost like sliding TikToks. Every song has its own custom-made look, from the visuals to the lighting.

"We've freshened up everything," Ray Winkler, CEO and design director at Stufish Entertainment Architects, says. "The stage is embellished by all of the digital media around them, and that, by default, makes it very contemporary. It's very clean-edged. It's not about the physical presence of a stage set but the continuing, evolving, and developing imagery that you see on the screens."

"In one minute, it's a very simple, geometrical building; nature takes over the next; and then it's sort of a Jasper Johns American flag ," Woodroffe says. "We can change the way the stage looks in a virtual way."  Still, Woodroffe says he worked with the band to connect everything into a cohesive statement.

During its month of rehearsals, the band ran through about half of the 12 tracks on Hackney Diamonds ; they've played four of them at concerts so far. By preparing for more, the crew could be ready for the band to surprise them at a moment's notice and keep the production running seamlessly.

The songs on this tour are arranged into distinct acts: openers, Richards' songs, the "home run" (as Woodroffe calls main-set closers), and then the encore. "The thing is quite well structured to the point that you can change out a song – if it has the same sort of feeling, the same sort of tempo – and not lose the flow or the way that the set works," Woodroffe says.

"It's a team effort," Winkler says. "It's a massive endeavor to get a project like this from an idea on paper into reality. There's a lot of unsung heroes that contribute toward the success of it."

Traditionally, Woodroffe worked closely on the look and feel of a tour starting about half a year before the first gig with Jagger and drummer Charlie Watts , who died in 2021, as well as Stufish founder Mark Fisher, who died in 2013. This time, after starting with Jagger and Winkler in the fall, Woodroffe ran the concept by Richards and Wood, who gave input. From there, they designed the stage sets, worked with costume designers, and commissioned videos from a studio called Treatment to play along with the songs. Eventually, they teamed up for rehearsals and got it all working together.

For Hackney Diamonds , the look of the tour began with the album launch last September in London, and they continued test-driving some of the looks at the band's New York City pop-up concert in October. There was still no firm commitment for tour dates at that point, but Woodroffe and the creative team figured it was coming, so they started formulating what a stadium tour could look like. Around that time, they started working with Winkler and Stufish and the company that makes the films for them. From there, it was just a few months of production. The tour announcement came in November, giving them time to refine the look of it.

"I never want it to look too slick," Woodroffe says. "This band is really authentic. Audiences will always be able to spot whether a performance is the real thing or not. It may be the soundtrack for the lives of the people in the audience, but it's also the soundtrack of the Stones' lives. They gift us their music, and that's the real embrace. That's the real thing."

Winkler strikes a similar note. "At the end of the day, you want everything we do to come together," he says. "You want that to be a catalyst to enhance the performance of the Stones in front of a very large crowd."

Woodroffe programmed the lighting for the tour in Chicago and met up with the band in Houston for five days of rehearsals. "It was very exciting seeing it all up in Houston for the first time and feeling that we kind of got it right," Woodroffe says. "When you get over that first hurdle that it's actually going to work, then the fun part is finessing it and marrying it with the music and the visuals to make something special." After overseeing the kickoff show, Woodroffe traveled with the band for their special appearance at Jazz Fest in New Orleans and made sure everything was working well again at the Glendale, Arizona, gig before flying home to England.

If and when the band is ready to design another tour after this one, Woodroffe says he's ready, because he never knows when the call is going to come. "You will never know when the Stones are going to do their last performance," he says. "None of us will. And not because there's any mystique about it, it's just the way they work. They finish a tour and go off on holiday and the tour promoters will offer them some new dates, they'll go, ‘Yes,' and off we'll go."

The Rolling Stones Rehearsed 60 to 70 Songs for ‘Hackney Diamonds' Tour

Suga of BTS’s World Tour Is Pop Subversion at Its Finest

In the U.S., the first member of the group to stage solo concerts delivered a thrilling declaration of artistic individuality.

Suga sings in a dark arena, with five spotlights on him.

Four hooded figures seemed to float down the stage, through the soft exhalations of a fog machine. On their shoulders, they carried a body clothed in black. Rain and lightning flashed a clean white on the screen behind them. When the man was finally laid on the ground, what followed looked like a resurrection: The spotlights found him, screams rose, and at last he stirred. Then he raised a microphone to his mouth.

This rock-star Lazarus was Min Yoongi, better known as the rapper and songwriter Suga of the Grammy-nominated, chart-topping South Korean group BTS. But none of his bandmates were onstage that night at UBS Arena, on Long Island, New York, because it was the first date of his solo world tour. Since last summer, the members have been focusing on individual projects as each prepares to complete his mandatory military service. The first in BTS to do a solo tour, Suga was also performing as Agust D, the name he adopted in 2016 for making music that was darker, more raw, and more personal than his group work. Last month, he released his studio album D-Day , the powerful conclusion to his trilogy of Agust D records, which delivered social critique and meditations on trauma, fame, mental illness, alienation, and forgiveness.

Suga’s ongoing tour, also titled D-Day, is the first real showcase of his oeuvre, and, on the sold-out U.S. leg of his tour, it felt like a declaration of artistic individuality more than a decade in the making. His concerts exploded with frontman energy and auteurist flourishes. But his most striking achievement was embracing pop music’s empathy-fueling potential while resisting its dehumanizing effects.

All 11 of his U.S. tour dates, which wrapped Wednesday night in Oakland, California, began with a short film that ended with Suga lying on a road in a thunderstorm. This was a reference to when he was hit by a car while working in Seoul part-time as a delivery boy to support himself while training to debut with BTS. The crash left him with a painful shoulder injury that continued to dog him even as BTS went on to achieve international fame. The segue from the video to the real-life Suga being carried onstage, seemingly lifeless, was smooth yet jarring—a reminder of the human vulnerability of a pop star whose fans camp outside concert venues for days.

When I saw Suga on that first night, at UBS Arena, as well as the final U.S. night, at Oakland Arena, his show challenged expectations of what a pop concert can do. On one level it was a dynamic hip-hop show, put on by a technically proficient rapper who as a kid would sample the Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto’s music to make his own beats. Suga set the tone for the evening with “Haegeum,” whose title refers both to a Korean string instrument and to the notion of lifting a ban on something that was forbidden. “Endless influx of information prohibits freedom of imagination / And seeks conformity of thought,” Suga rapped in Korean. “Slaves to capitalism, slaves to money, slaves to hatred and prejudice / Slaves to YouTube, slaves to flexin’.” The haegeum ’s haunting strings and a deliciously grimy bass vibrated the air. Though the track was written entirely in Korean, the crowd roared the lyrics back to him. He practically entered a hypnotic state while running through a rap-heavy opening sequence with the defiant “Daechwita” and the earlier fan favorites “Agust D” and “Give It to Me.”

Before the audience could get too settled, Suga brought out his acoustic guitar, its body decorated with messages and drawings from the other six BTS members. He’d only learned to play the instrument during the pandemic , so his unplugged version of “Seesaw” cut a sharp contrast to previous performances of the song, which featured choreography, backup dancers, and an elaborate set. His effortless swagger during the earlier hype songs gave way to the quieter spectacle of Suga in singer-songwriter mode. Later, he sat down at an upright piano and performed his own version of the 2020 BTS track “Life Goes On” and, in a particularly emotional moment, a solo rendition of the song “Snooze,” which features the singer Woosung and the late Sakamoto. A clip of Suga and Sakamoto’s sole meeting, from late 2022, played beforehand on the big screen—the older musician playing the song on a grand piano while the younger man tries to contain his joy. Sakamoto’s presence on “Snooze,” one of his final collaborations, was especially poignant to Suga, who idolized him and wrote the song to comfort younger struggling artists.

Again and again, D-Day allowed Suga to experiment in ways that he hadn’t been able to with BTS, and it was thrilling to see. Yes, he was still clearly a seasoned entertainer, who knew how to command the attention of tens of thousands of people , who could jump around a stage rapping without appearing to take a breath, as during the exhilarating medley of BTS rap songs in the middle of the concert. And at two Los Angeles shows, he welcomed guest appearances by the American singers Max and Halsey for their respective collaborations. But his subversive choices stood out too. The concert was interspersed with short films that evoked the dream logic of David Lynch and the grainy aesthetic of grind-house movies, telling the story of the musician’s three identities: the pop idol Suga, the shadow self Agust D, and the human Min Yoongi. The ultimate artistic aim of the concert seemed to be to clarify each of these distinct selves to the audience while recognizing that they must all exist together. Seeing him perform his solo BTS songs, including “Interlude: Shadow,” as well as his verses from tracks with the other BTS rappers , affirmed that he wasn’t looking to reject his past but instead was proud of it. After all, it had taken him to South Korea’s Blue House , America’s White House , the United Nations General Assembly, and the Grammys stage.

In another fascinating production choice, throughout the show, pieces of the extended stage were pulled to the ceiling by chains, giving Suga less and less space to perform, requiring him to navigate the platform more carefully. For his last pre-encore song, “Amygdala,” he stood on a lonely-looking square as fire blazed all around him, a terrifying prison. The centerpiece of the D-Day album, the emo-rap track serves as an origin story for the alter ego of Agust D, referencing his life’s defining traumas—the car accident, his mother’s heart surgery, and his father’s liver-cancer diagnosis—and how they shaped him. During the song’s final lines, apparently depleted, he collapsed on the ground, and the hooded figures returned to carry him away. Only this time, he wore all white, as though he’d been cleansed, his catharsis complete.

By the encore, all of the stage pieces had been removed, revealing the technical equipment that had been hiding beneath it. Scattered about were fire extinguishers, electrical cords, pyrotechnic devices. No longer elevated above the crowd, Suga performed his last few songs at ground level, right in front of fans, sometimes grabbing their phones and filming himself. These last moments were bittersweet: Much of the audience knew that after the tour ended in Seoul in late June, Suga would begin his military service for at least 18 months. That reality made the concerts feel like a temporary farewell. Fans’ glowing lightsticks rippled like a single wave throughout the arena. Every so often, carried by a feral energy, the crowd would start barking, making Suga gawk or laugh. In Oakland, he told the audience that he would return with the rest of the BTS members, asking fans to wait just a little longer.

On the tour’s first night, one more surprise awaited. I had assumed that the final song would be something sentimental or light-hearted. Instead, Suga walked over to an ominous circle of video cameras, stood right in the middle, and began murmuring the opening bars of “The Last.” This song, off his first mixtape, is one of his best and one of my favorites. It’s also a song I have a hard time listening to these days. On “The Last,” Suga raps about his OCD, depression, and social anxiety. His delivery starts out low and subdued and gradually grows more desperate; by the end he sounds like he’s somewhere between screaming and crying. When I first heard it years ago, I recalled my own unceasing panic attacks and the suffocating desire to die. The song lodged itself in my heart, a welcome shard.

Read: I wasn’t a fan of BTS. And then I was.

In recent years, Suga has made more music about growth, about self-love and being okay with uncertainty and suffering. He spoke early during the concert, in English, about wanting to perform with less anger, highlighting songs such as “SDL,” “People,” and “People Pt. 2”; these tracks painted a portrait of someone with a great capacity for measured reflection, forgiveness, and humility in the face of life’s challenges. I understand that too: The relief of no longer hurting so badly, of discovering healing on your own terms. So when I heard the first lines of “The Last” (“On the other side of the famous idol rapper stands my weak self, it’s a bit dangerous”), I froze. What was he doing? Those cameras—arrayed like a surveillance system, transmitting the videos to the screen above him—devoured and projected the anguish he was performing, suggesting that I was devouring it too.

But after a minute, I understood. Though he rapped with the same breathless passion he did as a striving 23-year-old, I realized that he wasn’t performing with pure fury but with an anger tempered by time. This emotion was no less powerful or sincere, but it was less damaging to the person communicating it. These days, he could stand in the flames and feel their heat, but not be consumed by them. He could connect with his younger self without fully becoming that person again.

Then the spell was over. The moment the song ended, the house lights went up so that we could see him walking in silence offstage. No goodbye, no drawn-out thank yous and waves to the cheering audience. Not even a glance backward. On the first night, people exchanged confused looks, shocked by his sudden exit. You could perhaps see this whole finale as a quiet confrontation with an audience, a grand assertion of the self by a beloved artist. But if it was a confrontation, it was one rooted in trust rather than condescension. Trust that the audience can sit with discomfort, that they’re self-aware enough not to be offended or horrified by what he’s showing them.

It was the perfect ending. A concert that began in darkness and mythmaking ended in light and exposure. Suga started the show being carried by others; he ended it by carrying himself out. What more could we want? He had just shown us everything.
