From Interstate 5 (Los Angeles and Orange County), take the Pershing Drive exit and follow the signs. From Interstate 15 (Escondido and Riverside), take State Route 163 south to the Park Blvd./I-5 South exit. Exit at Park Blvd. Turn left on Park Blvd. and head north; Zoo parking entrance is off Park Blvd. at Zoo Place.

From Interstate 5 (Mexico), take the State Route 163 north exit, then the Zoo/Museums (Richmond Street) exit and follow the signs to the Zoo parking lot.

From State Route 94, proceed into downtown San Diego to 11th Avenue. Turn right on 11th Avenue and proceed north to A Street. Turn right on A Street, and then make a quick left onto Park Blvd. and head north; Zoo parking entrance is off Park Blvd. at Zoo Place.

Parking is free in the lot in front of the Zoo. Additional free parking is available throughout Balboa Park.

It’s easy to get here on public transit. Rapid 215 and Route 7 stop at the Zoo and are an easy connection in downtown from Amtrak and COASTER trains at the Santa Fe Depot, downtown hotels, the Cruise Ship Terminal, Blue, Orange, and Green Line Trolleys and other MTS bus routes. Guests with Disabilities

The San Diego Zoo welcomes all guests. We have several services to help our guests with disabilities enjoy their visit. The Zoo provides dedicated parking, restrooms, and access to experiences, tour buses, and habitat areas for guests with disabilities. Please note there are steep grades in parts of the Zoo.

Our ADA shuttle service is available on an on-call basis for our guests with mobility-related disabilities and can accommodate all standard wheelchairs and the types of electronic conveyance vehicles (ECVs) allowed on grounds.

Contact any Zoo team member or volunteer to request service and get directions to the nearest pickup location. Space is limited and reserved for those who need it most. Guests who use mobility assistive devices may also refer to the Zoo map for ADA pathways and elevators.

San Diego Safari Park

While tourists flock to the world-famous San Diego Zoo, its Safari Park—located 30 miles away in the San Pasqual Valley—is equally interesting. Spread over 1,800 acres, it’s home to more than 3,500 animals and 260 different species as well as a huge botanical garden. Massive, open-range enclosures re-create various habitats from around the world (don’t miss African Plains, which is larger than the entire San Diego Zoo itself), while interactive exhibits allow visitors to get up close and personal with lemurs, lorikeets, bats, and more. The Safari Park began as a breeding program to supply the zoo but, over time, has become a major conservatory project. In fact, its condor-breeding efforts are behind the almost extinct bird’s successful reintroduction to the wilds of California. Note: Early mornings are the best time to see animal activity. Avoid August, September, and October, which are the area’s hottest months.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park was one of the boldest wildlife preservation projects in the history of the United States, and continues to positively impact conservation efforts around the world. The Park’s 1,000 acres in Escondido’s San Pasqual Valley have been expertly transformed into diverse habitats for more than 3,600 animals and over 1 million plants, while preserving an additional 800 acres as an undeveloped Biodiversity Reserve—with large expanses of coastal sage scrub vegetation at the nexus of two regionally important wildlife corridors.

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION The Curator of Mammals leads and inspires their team as they look after the wildlife in their care each day. Partnership engagement on long term strategy that works toward sustainable populations with the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and other AZA facilities is integral for long term success of species worldwide. The Curator of Mammals is responsible for proper management and care of the mammal population at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. This position reports to the Safari Park Vice President of Wildlife Care.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Leads and inspires the mammal team to ensure their engagement. Duties include hiring, training and development, succession planning, and performance management.
• Partners with wildlife care team, wildlife health team, internal stakeholders, AZA and other organizations on species related tasks and strategies such as breeding, studbooks, TAGs, population management, and conservation projects.
• Ensures SDZWA is compliant with all legal requirements regarding domestic and international movement of wildlife including partnering with the Safari Park and other partners and agencies on wildlife welfare issues.
• Collaborates with the architecture and operations team on habitat design always considering our wildlife’s opportunity to thrive and flourish.
• Provides complex interpretation of policies and procedures with the wildlife care team, zoo leadership, and other stakeholders.
• Exercises fiscal accountability and responsibility for departmental budget.
• Ensures mammal care operations are in compliance with established protocols, professional standards, and government regulations.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

This position will join the existing curatorial team as an Ambassador, Animal Behavior Teams (Explorers, Discoveries, Connection) and The Elephant team at the Safari Park as well as support all of Wildlife Care in operant conditioning. Our current strategic plan supports expanding behavioral husbandry and our wildlife participating in their healthcare. We are looking for a candidate who has several years of AZA experience. A strong working knowledge of current behavioral husbandry skills is preferred, along with a track record of successful mentoring of Wildlife Care Specialists and empowering leaders to implement goals of behavioral programs. Experience managing ambassador animals and associated programming is preferred. Our behavioral conditioning program (BCP) is growing and needs an innovative leader focused on animal welfare, safety and guest experience. The successful candidate will have a collaborative work style, be open-minded, and focused on leadership and bringing out the best in others.

JOB EXPERIENCE

• 7+ Years experience in responsible zoo/animal management and habitat development
• Previous curatorial experience

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s Degree Bachelor’s Degree in biological or natural sciences or a related field Or
• Equivalent specialized training with mammals

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

• Strong working knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act and mammal conservation landscape.
• Strong working knowledge of mammal population, welfare and emergency protocols.
• Demonstrated ability to prepare and present to large audiences.
• Able to operate moderately complex computer software programs.
• Demonstrated ability to lead highly effective, diverse teams.
• Able to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION

The Banquet Manager is responsible for all internal and external banquet operations. This responsibility includes, but is not limited to event operations, leadership of the team, food and beverage execution, and coordination of catering events.

This position reports to the Associate Director of Retail Operations.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

In addition, will provide oversight to other operational areas as needed including quick service restaurants / retail.

Is responsible for inventory control, ordering, managing supplies, and storage and maintenance of equipment / supplies.

Manages employee cash control and register functions.

• 2-3 years experience managing large and small catered and VIP events
• Experience working with represented labor unions

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's Degree in hospitality, business administration or a related field
• Servsafe Certification within 90 Days

• Outstanding customer service skills and the ability to diffuse complex situations with a high level of tact and diplomacy
• Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and motivate a team in a diverse environment

Rotary holds Bowling Fundraiser

The La Mesa Sunrise Rotary Club will host its annual Bowling Fundraiser from 5:30 to 8:45 p.m. May 10 at Parkway Bowl, 1280 Fletcher Parkway, in El Cajon. Art, Garden & Studio Tour for Mother’s Day

The nonprofit San Dieguito Art Guild hosts its 27th annual Mother’s Day Weekend Art, Garden & Studio Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May-11-12. Animal shelter waives pet adoption fees for older pets

The Rancho Coastal Humane Society will waive adoption fees for dogs and cats 6 months and older through May 15 as part of the Bissell Pet Foundation “Empty the Shelters” drive. The shelter, at 389 Requeza St., is resuming Thursday adoption hours. The kennels, Cattery and Rabbitat are open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays, and by appointment on Wednesdays. The shelter is closed Tuesdays. Visit sdpets.org .

The shelter also offers programs that reduce pet adoption fees for people who qualify:

Better with a Buddy: Adopt one cat, kitten or dog and get the second one (within a year) for $25. This program does not include puppies.

Seniors-For-Seniors: The adoption fee will be paid by a RCHS donor for any senior person (60 years or older) adopting a senior pet (7 years or older).

‘World of Orchids’ at San Diego Botanic Garden

The San Diego Botanic Garden hosts its annual spring orchids showcase, “World of Orchids,” from May 4 through May 27 at 300 Quail Gardens Drive. The immersive display will be in the Dickinson Family Education Conservatory, an 8,000-square-foot, glass-enclosed conservatory. The show includes plants from members of the San Diego County Orchid and Palomar Orchid societies along with orchids and supplies from local businesses. Vendors will be at the garden on certain weekends selling plants, potting supplies and other items. The garden is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (except Tuesdays). The walk starts at the Mission Hills Nursery, 1525 Fort Stockton Ave., where participants pick up their wristbands and booklets. Trolleys will be available to transport attendees along the route. Proceeds go to the club’s community college scholarship program, Mission Hills Summer Concerts in the Park and neighborhood beautification projects. Tickets are $40, free for kids younger than 10, at missionhillsgardenclub.org . There is a $15 garden club membership discount for attendees with tickets.

Posh on Prospect set for May 11

Posh on Prospect spotlights the fashion scene in La Jolla on May 11, featuring La Jolla’s boutiques and designer brands of Fashion Week San Diego. Attendees can browse through La Jolla’s boutiques throughout the day. Free museum admission

Along with free general admission to the exhibits at the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park on the third Tuesday of each month for San Diego County residents, the museum offers another free day on the second Thursday of each month for all visitors, regardless where they live. The next such free days are May 9 and May 21. Also, students, veterans and active-duty military can now get in the museum free any day with valid identification. Big Exchange for museum admissions

Spring tours celebrate architect james hubbell.

The Ilan-Lael Foundation hosts spring tours celebrating artist and architect James Hubbell at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, May 10-17. Visitors can explore the blend of art and nature in the hills of Santa Ysabel and wander through the sculptures, gardens and structures of Ilan-Lael, seeing Hubbell’s visionary creations. The tours are limited to small groups and last about 90 minutes. The tours give a rare opportunity to see Hubbell’s creations up close. Tickets are $90 with a two-person minimum per booking. The Vista Optimist Club holds its Larry Cooke Memorial Friends of Youth Golf Tournament on May 13 at Shadowridge Golf Club, 1980 Gateway Drive, with shotgun start at noon. How great is Lion Country Safari? Zoo made this USA top 10 list for the seventh time!

The results are in and once again Palm Beach County's Lion Country Safari has been named one of the top 10 Safari Parks in the country.

Taking seventh place on the list (which was released March 13), this is the seventh year in a row that the park has been named to the USA Today's "10Best" Readers' Choice list.

Opened in 1967 and situated on 600 acres, Lion Country Safari is Florida's largest drive-through safari and is home to hundreds of animals roaming wide open, natural habitats in large herds, prides and troops.

The four-mile-long, drive-through safari is divided into seven different habitats.

What animals are in Lion Country Safari?

Those areas include Las Pampas, Ruaha National Park, Kalahari Bushveldt, Gir Forest, Gorongosa Reserve, Serengeti Plains and Hwange National Park.

Some of the animals that guests see during their trek through the seven zones include aldabra tortoises, alpacas, Brazilian tapirs, greater kudus, impalas, ostriches, gemsbok, wildebeest, Asiatic water buffaloes, blackbucks, African lions, common elands, impalas, giraffes, zebras, southern white rhinoceros and many more.

The park features the largest herd of zebra on record in the western hemisphere, one of the largest herds of giraffe in the United States and a large herd of rhinos with a long history of breeding success.

Lion Country Safari not just a drive-thru zoo — best things to do on foot at this Palm Beach County park

Though the drive-through safari is the star of the park, there are many other fun things to do. Some of these include:

Kids can hop on some rides: Who could resist a Flying Elephant Ride? Also check out the Carousel and the Rio Grande Train.

On a hot day, get wet: A waterpark with fun features for cooling off including the Safari Splash Sprayground, Safari Water Slides and Safari Falls.

Feed the giraffe : At the Giraffe Feeding encounter, guests can stand on a platform (the better to get on giraffe level) to hand feed these majestic animals and maybe even get some great pictures.

Feed the birds: Check out the Lorikeet Feeding where participants can give these beautiful, charismatic birds a couple treats.

Get on a boat: A trip on the Safari Queen Pontoon Boat tour on Lake Shannalee and closer view of some of the park's birds and primates.

Get lost? : The park has a Safari Maze.

Play a round: This safari park has a 16-hole miniature golf course.

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION The Curator of Mammals leads and inspires their team as they look after the wildlife in their care each day. Partnership engagement on long term strategy that works toward sustainable populations with the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and other AZA facilities is integral for long term success of species worldwide. The Curator of Mammals is responsible for proper management and care of the mammal population at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. This position reports to the Safari Park Vice President of Wildlife Care.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Leads and inspires the mammal team to ensure their engagement. Duties include hiring, training and development, succession planning, and performance management.
• Partners with wildlife care team, wildlife health team, internal stakeholders, AZA and other organizations on species related tasks and strategies such as breeding, studbooks, TAGs, population management, and conservation projects.
• Ensures SDZWA is compliant with all legal requirements regarding domestic and international movement of wildlife including partnering with the Safari Park and other partners and agencies on wildlife welfare issues.
• Collaborates with the architecture and operations team on habitat design always considering our wildlife’s opportunity to thrive and flourish.
• Provides complex interpretation of policies and procedures with the wildlife care team, zoo leadership, and other stakeholders.
• Exercises fiscal accountability and responsibility for departmental budget.
• Ensures mammal care operations are in compliance with established protocols, professional standards, and government regulations.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

This position will join the existing curatorial team as an Ambassador, Animal Behavior Teams (Explorers, Discoveries, Connection) and The Elephant team at the Safari Park as well as support all of Wildlife Care in operant conditioning. Our current strategic plan supports expanding behavioral husbandry and our wildlife participating in their healthcare. We are looking for a candidate who has several years of AZA experience. A strong working knowledge of current behavioral husbandry skills is preferred, along with a track record of successful mentoring of Wildlife Care Specialists and empowering leaders to implement goals of behavioral programs. Experience managing ambassador animals and associated programming is preferred. Our behavioral conditioning program (BCP) is growing and needs an innovative leader focused on animal welfare, safety and guest experience. The successful candidate will have a collaborative work style, be open-minded, and focused on leadership and bringing out the best in others.

JOB EXPERIENCE

• 7+ Years experience in responsible zoo/animal management and habitat development
• Previous curatorial experience

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s Degree Bachelor’s Degree in biological or natural sciences or a related field Or
• Equivalent specialized training with mammals

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

• Strong working knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act and mammal conservation landscape.
• Strong working knowledge of mammal population, welfare and emergency protocols.
• Demonstrated ability to prepare and present to large audiences.
• Able to operate moderately complex computer software programs.
• Demonstrated ability to lead highly effective, diverse teams.
