Seminyak is a great place to visit all year round. No matter when you time your visit, you’ll find beautiful beaches, excellent shopping, and a lively beach club scene. Bali’s hottest (and busiest) season occurs between May and September, when temperatures regularly surpass 30 degrees. Expect busier beaches and higher prices.

The monsoon season occurs between October and April, but don’t let this put you off. Although you’re likely to experience some wet weather, it usually only rains for a few hours a day. You still enjoy the sunshine the rest of the day.

For the best conditions, visit in early May when the weather is warm and the lush countryside is looking its best.

What to do in Seminyak in the afternoon? Pick a perch with a view and watch the sunset.

Bali’s west coast boasts some of the most incredible sunset spots in Indonesia, and Seminyak is a great place to watch the last of the day’s rays hit the glittering water. There are photo opportunities galore on the beaches, especially during the rainy season, when the billowing clouds take on spectacular colours at the end of the day.

The beaches at Seminyak don’t offer many opportunities for diving (it’s more famous for surfing) but that doesn’t mean that you can’t learn HOW to scuba dive during your stay here. Seminyak is the perfect jumping-off point for visiting dive sites such as Nusa Penida and the Liberty shipwreck.

Several dive companies operate out of Seminyak, catering for beginners and advanced divers, so this is the perfect place to try your hand at scuba diving. However, be warned – after one trip in Bali’s rich and diverse waters, you’ll be hooked!

Bali is packed with beautiful temples – living sites of worship and an important part of the island’s heritage. Pura Petitenget is one of Seminyak’s most historic attractions. It’s an important Balinese sea temple built around the legend of the priest Niratha and his magic box.

To gain a deeper understanding of the culture you could also visit the temple complex at Pura Masceti, where farmers come to pray for fine weather and to ward off rat infestations.

15 Best Things to Do in Seminyak (Bali)

Seminyak sits a little way along the coast from the famous Kuta Beach in Bali and provides a welcome alternative to its brasher and more crowded cousin. Seminyak has its own pretty beaches and there is a feeling of more space here as the crowds that descend on Kuta are not as prevalent in Seminyak. As Seminyak has a beach it also has some good surf and you can also rent a board here and ride the waves or just stick to swimming or sunbathing.

One of the main reasons to come to Seminyak is to enjoy not only the beach but also the amazing beach bars and cafes that run along the coastlines and you will find a huge number of choices available which means that you will never go hungry or thirsty here. Many of the restaurants have foreign chefs in residence so if you want to try some fine dining then this is a great place to do it.

People also flock to Seminyak for its nightlife although it is a little tamer than neighboring Kuta. Whereas Kuta has a number of nightclubs, Seminyak is more focused on beach clubs where you can sip a drink with your feet in the sand, although there are also some clubs to be found in the area. As if all that wasn’t enough, Seminyak is also known for its shopping with some of the biggest names in Bali choosing to open up shop here. As such, you can walk along the main shopping arteries of this part of the island and shop until you drop.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Seminyak :

1. Spend the day by the pool at Potato Head Beach Club

Potato Head Beach Cub

Potato Head Beach Club is one of the premium venues in Seminyak and has a large infinity pool and beach front covered in bean bags and sun loungers.

It is the perfect place to come if you fancy a lazy day in Seminyak and you can also rent one of the cabanas here and stay all day sipping on cocktails and enjoying some of the poolside cuisine.

If you want a cabana you will have to get here early as many of them are snapped up by 10 am, and some of the signature nibbles here include tapas and huge cheese and meat platters.

There are also three restaurants here if you want some formal dining in the form of the Potato Head Bistro, Lilin which serves Asian fusion food, and Tapping Shoes which is a French take on upscale dining.

2. Have a cup of coffee at Revolver

Revolver

Locals and visitors alike will tell you that the best coffee in Seminyak is to be found at Revolver.

The small coffee shop sits at the end of an alleyway but it is worth seeking it out to sample the delicious beans here.

You will find a wide range of different coffee based drinks as well as a number of bean blends and the place is not short on character, particularly as it is styled to resemble a saloon in the days of the Wild West.

They also serve delicious food so try and time your visit to coincide with breakfast or lunch.

3. Try scuba diving

Adventure Scuba Diving Bali

If you are in Seminyak and want to get PADI certified then consider a trip to Adventure Scuba Diving Bali.

This Seminyak based diving school will teach you how to dive safely, or if you are already an experienced diver you can also sign up for a dive trip with them.

There is no diving in Seminyak itself but there are a range of dive spots just a short boat ride away so you can hop onboard and enjoy the underwater delights that Bali is famous for.

4. Check out the art at Nyaman Gallery

Nyaman Gallery

Nyaman Gallery is one of the best places to come in Seminyak if you are interested in art and want to support the arts scene in Bali.

Most of the pieces on show here are made by local Balinese and Indonesian artists with an emphasis on showcasing up-and-coming new talent.

There are a huge number of pieces on show here including wearable art, ceramics, painting, and sculpture.

There are also items from around Indonesia such as ornate carvings from East Nusa Tenggara as well as hand blown glass and oil paintings.

Almost all of the pieces are for sale, so you can also pick up your own piece of art as a souvenir of your trip to Seminyak.

5. Go horse riding

Seminyak Horse Ride

One of the most popular activities to enjoy on Seminyak Beach is the chance to go horse riding.

Trips along the beach usually take two hours to complete and you can ride along the beach from Seminyak to Canggu.

Each rider is assigned a horse and you will have professional guides to lead you along the sand to make sure that you can enjoy the ocean views in a safe and serene way.

This is also a great choice for those travelling with a family as children are welcome and there are a variety of ponies to choose from.

Suggested tour : Canggu: Horse Riding on the Beach and in the Rice Fields

6. Go surfing at Seminyak Beach

Seminyak Beach

Seminyak Beach is a lovely spot of golden sand and always feels less crowded than Kuta, even though it is equally popular.

The waves here provide some surfing opportunities although the surf can be a little inconsistent and this is also a good place to go swimming.

If you prefer, you can rent a sun lounger and just take in the atmosphere and there are a huge number of stalls here that will happily sell you some ice cold beer or a soft drink as the perfect complement to the spectacular Balinese sunsets.

Suggested tour : Bali: 2-Hour Surfing Lessons

7. Admire Pura Petitenget

Pura Petitenget

One of the only real ‘attractions’ in Seminyak as such is Pura Petitenget which is one of six important sea temples in Bali.

The temples line the coast from Pura Luhur Ulu Watu which is on the Bukit Peninsula and stretch to the most famous temple in Bali which is Pura Tanah Lot in the west of the island.

Petitenget means ‘magic box’ and this is a reference to a magic box owned by a priest called Nirartha who would have lived in the 16th century.

The priest regularly visited the temple which is why it was named after the magic box.

8. Spend the evening at Ku De Ta

Ku De Ta

Ku De Ta is one of the most popular places in Seminyak and is a large beachfront bar which has some great views over the ocean.

They do a wonderful range of specialty cocktails and you can rent a lounger or sit on a bean bag on the beach and take in the scenery.

There is also a resident DJ here that keeps the party going in the evenings and an onsite restaurant where you can order some bar snacks or a full meal.

9. Relax at Seminyak Yoga Shala

Seminyak Yoga Shala

Bali is famous for its yoga and Seminyak is no exception.

New on the yoga scene here is Seminyak Yoga Shala which is located on the central artery of Jalan Seminyak and also has a raw food cafe onsite.

There are a range of different classes you can take every day that will suit a variety of levels of ability and you can also try different types of yoga such as Ashtanga and Mysore and there are also Qi Gong and Tai Chi classes available here.

If you want to de-stress and unwind you can buy a day pass or sign up for a longer course of yoga if you are in town for a while.

10. Visit Pura Masceti

Ceremony At Pura Masceti

Along with Pura Petitenget, Pura Masceti is another famous temple in Seminyak although it is also a more specific one.

Where Pura Petitenget is a sea temple, Pura Masceti is an agricultural temple which is used by farmers.

Anyone linked to agriculture can come here to pray for rain or for insect infestations to stop damaging their crops and it is even known as a spot for builders to lay offerings before they break ground on a new villa.

11. Spend the evening at Bali Joe

Bali Joe

If you are looking for some nightlife in Seminyak then Bali Joe is one of the few openly LGBT venues on the island.

While Bali is generally a permissive and open-minded place, some members of the LGBT community may feel more comfortable at a dedicated LGBT nightclub, and if this is the case then Bali Jo makes a great choice.

The party keeps going on long into the wee small hours of the morning here and there are shows that feature elaborately costumed drag queens and go-go dancers who get the crowd on their feet.

12. Go shopping on Jalan Laksmana

Jalan Laksmana

Jalan Laksmana is one of the main roads in Seminyak and is it known as a shopping haven not only in Seminyak but across wider Bali as well.

Here you will find a vast selection of big brands which include resort clothes like Saba and Mist and surf wear such as Drifter.

If you want to splash the cash then you can opt to shop at places like Milk & Roses or pick up some casual styles at Buddha Wear.

Whatever your tastes and budget however, there is no doubt that you will find something to wear here.

13. Have a massage at Bodyworks

Bodyworks

Some visitors may not know that Seminyak is famous in Bali for its sheer number of spas.

Massage parlors are dotted all over this part of the area and if you want to relax and unwind then one of the best places to come is Bodyworks which has been in the business of giving soothing massages for years and has an array of different spa treatments.

14. Enjoy Double Six Beach

Double Six Beach

Double Six Beach is also known as Blue Ocean Beach and is actually a smaller part of the wider Seminyak Beach.

Double Six Beach is notable however thanks to its pristine white sands and backs on to a range of bars and restaurants.

If you want to find the nicest patch of sand in Seminyak then this is probably it, and you can sit on a bean bag with a cocktail and enjoy the sunset.

15. Check out the Theatre Art Gallery

Theatre Art Gallery

When it comes to the Theatre Art Gallery, the clue is in the name.

The gallery focuses on showcasing beautiful Indonesian puppets called wayang that are used when performing traditional Balinese shows.

Fun Things to do in Seminyak

1) hit seminyak or double 6 beach.

Let’s start with the main thing to do in Seminyak – spending time on the beach! Now, don’t expect a paradisiac stretch of white sand, with calm turquoise water and gentle wavelets lapping the shore. If this is what you want, you’d better head to Raja Ampat!

Seminyak and nearby Double Six Beach are buzzing places, full of beach bars, locals selling kites, towels and other beach knick-knacks, surfers practising their moves and people swimming or sunbathing.

It’s a fun place to spend the day, with always something to do – and if you get hungry, there are a lot of beach restaurants to choose from!

2) Learn How to Surf

You’ll find people swimming on Seminyak and Double Six Beach, but these are really surf beaches . Joining a surf class or spending a day (or three) hitting the waves is next up on our list of things to do in Seminyak – after all, Bali is what it is because of surf!

Seminyak is a great place to learn how to surf – it’s not as busy as Canggu, and not as challenging as the legendary surf beaches in the Bukit Peninsula of Southern Bali.

This is definitely one of the most fun things to do in Seminyak! There are tons of cooking classes on offer, usually starting with a market visit where you pick the day’s freshest ingredients guided by your chef, and then followed by a lesson where you learn to make Balinese favourites like satay, gado gado, spicy salads and more.

After cooking, it’s time to savour the fruits of your hard work! Your cooking class will be followed by lunch or dinner , and you’ll be given a booklet with the recipes you’ve just cooked to take home, so you can surprise your guests next time you host a dinner party.

Take a look at the food tours below – but make sure to arrive hungry!

  • Seminyak: Cooking Class with a Balinese Family
  • Authentic Cooking Class in a Local Village

6) Take a Food Tour

Do you love to eat, but you’re not willing to work hard for your dinner? Instead of a cooking class, you can opt for a Seminyak food tour.

Don’t forget that Seminyak has a hip, luxury vibe – this is not really the place to head into any old warung , as you can do that anywhere in Bali. In Seminyak, you should treat yourself!

Here’s a great food tour including a market visit and a cooking class !

7) Visit Petitenget Temple

If you’re in Bali just for a short time and want to visit a temple , the closest one to Seminyak will be Petitenget Temple.

This is very much a locals-only temple , hidden away between the glitzy Seminyak hotels and eateries. A red brick and sandstone entrance with an elaborate Balinese portal surrounds a number of pavillions and shrines. As it’s the case with other temples in Bali, tourists are not allowed to enter the inner sanctum , reserved for locals and praying.

Right next to Petitenget Temple you can also see the smaller Pura Masceti , where locals worship asking the gods to protect their crops. Both temples are fun to visit during celebrations happening according to the Balinese calendar , when you can see dancing and locals in their best traditional clothing.

Try to visit with a local guide if possible , so you’ll be well versed in temple dos and don’ts. Definitely an unusual thing to do in Seminyak , as most visitors stick to the beach!

8) Get Your Coffee Fix

You can really find anything in Seminyak – including excellent coffee! If you’ve spent time in offbeat places in Bali or beyond and are craving that perfect latte from home, you’re more than likely to find it here.

Seminyak is second only to Canggu for that Insta-perfect blend of colourful walls , totally extra latte art and tasty cakes and slices – including plenty of raw and/or vegan options, bien sûr!

There are literally dozens of cafés in Seminyak – we recommend checking out Revolver (or Baby Revolver , depending where in Seminyak you are), Sisterfields, Coffee Cartel or Bottega Italiana in Petitenget.

9) Go Scuba or Helmet Diving

Bali is home to great scuba diving, and even though Seminyak itself doesn’t have any dive sites, it’s a very convenient place to arrange scuba diving trips.

Dive shops organising fun dives in places like Padangbai’s Blue Lagoon and Tulamben Bay (home to the famous USAT Liberty wreck!) will also include pick up and drop off from Seminyak hotels.

If you’re not certified but still want to experience the thrill of being underwater, opt for a helmet diving session – you’ll be walking on the seabed without even getting your hair wet, I guarantee it’s super fun!

Here are some of the best diving excursions from Seminyak:

  • Bali: Tulamben Bay and the USAT Liberty Wreck Dive
  • Bali: Padangbai Blue Lagoon Beginner’s Dive Experience
  • Bali: Tulamben Bay Beginner’s Dive Experience

10) Go Shopping!

Do you think shopping in Bali is all about Bintang t-shirts and knock-off batik? Think again – Seminyak is a real shopping paradise , with a multitude of boutiques where you’ll find kaftans, sarongs, camisoles and more of that boho-chic style that’s become synonym with Bali, plus swimwear, surf clothing and accessories, leather goods, and more.

In Seminyak you’ll also find two shopping malls , Seminyak Square and Seminyak Village – the latter has more upmarket shops compared to the former. Yet, the real deals to be had in Seminyak are at boutiques – the best ones are on Jalan Kunti and Jalan Laksmana.

There are plenty of wonderful boutiques to check out in Seminyak – here are some!

  • Drifter Surf Shop –  with custom surfboards and high-quality surf apparel
  • Thaikila –  all sorts of swimwear, including some beautiful crochet bikinis
  • Uluwatu – minimalistic (but super stylish) beachwear
  • Canaan – artisanal accessories plus yoga clothes and wraps made with hand-loomed fabrics

11) Hunt for Bargains at a Seminyak Market

Ok, I know what you are thinking. All those boutiques along Jalan Laksmana sound brilliant, but who has that much money? Well, I have the solution for you – go shopping at one of Seminyak’s markets instead!

The best known is probably the Flea Market Oberoi , not far from Seminyak Village. You’ll soon notice the ‘flea’ attribute is just in the name – prices are lower than at shops , but definitely not as low as you’d expect from a market. There are some nice boho-chic flowing dresses and accessories though, making for nice souvenirs.

You’ll also find market stalls along the road leading to Double Six Beach and Jalan Raya. Prices will definitely be inflated so feel free to bargain, but don’t forget to be respectful. Those 10K IDR will mean nothing to you, but will definitely make a difference for a local family!

12) Visit an Art Gallery

If you’re into art, another fun thing to do in Seminyak is going to visit an art gallery and maybe even picking up some exclusive souvenirs to remember your time in Bali.

The best known art gallery in Seminyak is definitely Nyaman Gallery – the word ‘nyaman’ means ‘cozy’ in Indonesian, as the gallerists aim to recreate a welcoming environment to showcase the work of emerging Bali-based artists. You’ll find a variety of paintings, sculpture, tribal art with beads and feathers, plus artworks made from natural materials like wood and stone.

Other art galleries in Seminyak include Purpa Art Gallery , also focusing on Indonesian artists with pieces for every budget, Positive Negative Visual Gallery also selling prints, and Syah , where you can also have a portrait done in real time!

13) Have a Massage

Bali is a true paradise for massage lovers – everywhere you go, you’ll find massages and beauty treatments on offer, and even the fanciest spas are affordable by Western standards.

This is also true in Seminyak – every upmarket hotel will have treatments and massages on offer, and if you’re staying in a villa it’s usually possible to have a therapist visit. Balinese massage makes use of scented herbal oils , and it’s usually quite gentle, but if you like deep-tissue stimulation you can always ask for a stronger massage.

Finding the best spa in Seminyak is probably a subject for another post, so here are three options if you want to add ‘have a massage’ to your list of things to do in Seminyak. AWAY Spa is known its oxygen treatments and the fact that it’s open 24/7, Moroccan-themed Prana Spa offers Ayurvedic treatments and is super Instagrammable, and Bodyworks has cool therapy rooms and great value for money.

14) Visit a Cool Museum

If you happen to be in Seminyak on a rainy day , you may find yourself wondering what to do – true, a yoga or massage is always a great idea, but what if you just want to do something fun?

You could head to the DMZ 3D Art Museum , where Korean artists have created more than 120 optical illusions that will make you feel as if you were walking through the Pyramids, diving underwater, or visiting some of Bali’s best known sights.

It’s the perfect place to visit in Seminyak on a rainy day , especially for a family!

Best Day Trips from Seminyak

16) explore the rest of bali on a day trip.

Seminyak is a great first stop in Bali , and the great choice of transport options also make it a good base, especially if you’re in Bali only for a few days.

From Seminyak, it’s easy to arrange day trips to other locations in Bali – for example, to Nungnung and other waterfalls around Bali , or to the Jatiluwih rice terraces .

Another amazing thing to do would be heading to Nusa Penida – although we recommend staying for longer than a day trip!

Here are some amazing day trips you can take from Seminyak!

  • Rafting and Quad Biking in Bali
  • Bali Instagram Tour – The Most Scenic Spots
  • Snorkeling Day Trip to Nusa Lembongan and Penida

16) Climb Mount Batur at Sunrise

My favourite day trip from Seminyak was to Mount Batur , one of Bali’s three active volcanoes. If you are into hiking and don’t mind waking up a little early, definitely add a Mount Batur sunrise hike to your list of things to do in Seminyak!

You’ll be picked up around 1 am from your accommodation and driven to a location in Central Bali. From there, you’ll meet your guide and start hiking in the dark – the aim is reaching the summit in time to see the sunrise.

Hiking up takes about 1 hour and a half , and it’s totally achievable if you are reasonably fit. Seeing the sun rise behind Mount Agung, the tallest volcano in Bali, will be worth the effort and the early wake up call – especially if Mount Agung happens to be erupting!

17) Spend a Day in Ubud

A day trip to Bali’s spiritual capital is also a must do while in Seminyak – unless you’re planning a longer stay, something we wholeheartedly recommend.

There are so many things to do in Ubud and surrounds – from hiking rice terraces to visiting temples, going on yoga retreats and meeting shamans, going shopping and experiencing water purification ceremonies…

Ubud is truly a special place. Don’t miss it!

Things to do in Seminyak at Night

18) enjoy the foodie scene.

So much to eat, so little time! This is particularly true in Seminyak – from uber-fancy conceptual eateries to bare-bones warung , and everything in between, the restaurant choice is almost endless.

A lively expat scene means that Seminyak is also a good place to enjoy your favourite food – be it ramen, burgers, pizza or whatever else, you can be sure to find it in Seminyak.

bottega italiana semonyak

Choosing the best restaurant in Seminyak is likely to be a formidable task, so here are 6 of your favourites – if you know of any more, feel free to let us know and we’ll add them!

  • Bottega Italiana – excellent Italian restaurant with the best pizza and pasta in two locations in Seminyak! The owner is a friend of mine from Milan.
  • Wacko Burger Cafe – the best burgers in Seminyak, period! There are also vegetarian and vegan burgers.
  • Naughty Nuri’s Warung – the Seminyak outpost of the original Naughty Nuri in Ubud, famous for its sticky ribs and dirty Martinis.
  • Motel Mexicola – this fun restaurant/bar with a retro vibe is worth visiting for its excellent Mexican food, but make sure you also stay for the party!
  • Mama San – delicious Pan-Asian cuisine and cocktails plus classy interiors.
  • Merah Putih – THE place to go for upscale Indonesian food! The eye-catching architecture and great prices will make you want to return time and time again.

19) Go to a Beach Bar

beach bar double six beach

Well, having fun on the beach is definitely the best thing to do in Seminyak , and the reason why many visit! We’ve already seen above that Seminyak and Double Six beaches are buzzing during the day – after dark, the fun just keeps on going.

Most revellers start their night with a sunset beer (or six) at a beach bar, before moving on to a club. Both Seminyak and Double Six beaches are full of beach bars with colourful umbrellas and bean bags , plus a choice of simple meals and plenty of chilled beverages.

La Plancha is a long-running favourite, but loud music and hefty prices mean it’s probably better to look for alternatives. Taris Bali and D’Joglo are just a short walk away and just as fun!

20) Or Party at a Beach Club!

beach club double six beach

There’s one more unmissable thing to do in Seminyak at night – party away at a beach club! If you’ve never heard of Bali beach clubs, I’m sure you have seen pictures on Instagram – they’re those paradise places with beachside infinity pools, daybeds and beanbags to lounge on during the day while you snack on Bali bowls and sip fruit cocktails.

When sunset comes, the party begins . There are live shows, music ranging from EDT to smooth lounge tunes, international DJs visiting, swanky restaurants, and more. Start your night with sunset beers at a beach bar and then move onto one of Seminyak’s historic clubs like Ku De Ta or Potato Head.

Otherwise, hit one of the new kids on the block like Tropicola (from the same management as Motel Mexicola!) or Sugarsand , known for its rooftop lounge and Peruvian/Japanese menu.

How to Get to and Around Seminyak

Seminyak is only about half an hour away from Bali airport , so it’s a great place to stay as a first or last stop on the island.

The best way to get between Seminyak and the airport is by Bluebird taxi or private driver – expect to pay about 150K IDR for the ride, more at night.

To get around Seminyak, or between Seminyak and other towns in Bali, you have several options:

-Scooter Rental

This is the most popular way to get around Seminyak and the rest of Bali. Scooter rental is about  60K IDR per day , and approx 600/700K IDR for an entire month.

PLEASE exercise extreme caution if you have never ridden scooters or motorbikes before, and make sure you’re covered by travel insurance.

-Ride Sharing Apps

Ride sharing apps like Grab/Go-Jek are very popular with visitors that don’t want to rent scooters and don’t want to battle with taxi drivers every day.

They work exactly like Uber – if you need a car, opt for Grab , while  Go-Jek allows you to hitch a ride on the back of a motorbike, which is usually cheaper and faster.

The only issue in Seminyak and other tourist hotspots is that taxi drivers prevent Uber and Go-Jek drivers from operating , and you may find it hard to get a ride. If that’s the case, a taxi will be your only option.

You’ll find taxis everywhere in Seminyak, but if you hop on a random taxi on the street, you almost certainly will get ripped off.

The best way to prevent this is using Bluebird taxis , which are safe and always use a meter. They’re easy to spot as all their cars are the same bright blue colour, but pay attention to the sign on the door and make sure it says says BLUEBIRD and not ‘Blue Bali’ or something similar, as there are plenty of copycats!

-Private Driver

Hiring a private driver may not be so convenient for short hops around Seminyak, but it’s definitely a good idea if you’re planning to go on day trips around Bali including several stops, or to get between the airport and Seminyak.

Rates are convenient at about 600K IDR for a day –  if there is four of you, it means less than €10 each for the day! A ‘whole day’ means 10 hours, if you need your driver for longer it usually costs an extra 50K per hour.

If you are looking for a reliable private driver, get in touch with Yung  – her phone number is +62 811 5997 995

Where to Stay in Seminyak

Where to begin? Are you after a resort-style hotel, a swanky villa, or some moderately-priced accommodation? There are literally hundreds of hotels, villas and guesthouses to choose from in Seminyak , so it all depends on what you’re after.

courtyard marriott seminyak

We stayed at Courtyard Marriott Seminyak , a resort-style hotel just steps away from Double Six beach, with a large swimming pool with three sections (including one with a swim-up bar!), a lounging area, and THE BEST BREAKFAST I’ve ever had in my life. Honestly, I’ll stay there again for the breakfast alone!

Here are other great accommodation option in Seminyak!

  • Peppers Seminyak – luxury Balinese-style villa just steps away from the beach!
  • Equilibria Seminyak – expect minimalistic style, a top spa and infinity pool in this luxury villa!
  • Chandra Bali Villas – plenty of style and peace in this family-friendly villa, also offering yoga classes.
  • Katamama – architectural edge meets eco-friendly policies in this stunning Bali hotel! Rooms come with a daybed at Potato Head (deal!)

  • Alila Seminyak – sleek luxury stay and the best infinity pool in Seminyak!

Hit the beaches

Seminyak, though a popular area for travellers, is lucky to have beaches that feel less crowded. Seminyak Beach has golden sand and is an optimal place to catch sunset.

During the day you can try the waves with some water activities or chill out on a lounge chair. The beach is good for swimming too. There are plenty of places for you to grab a drink and some food so you can spend the whole day without leaving the beach.

Other beaches in Seminyak include Double Six Beach and Legian Beach. Kuta Beach is also not far but busier.

Enjoy the beach clubs

Seminyak is home to one of Bali’s best beach clubs, Potato Head (also known as one of the top places to see in Seminyak) is great if you want a day to just chill out either in the sand or by the pool.

The beach is lined with umbrellas and bean bags while around the pool there are cabanas where you can lounge and sip on cocktails all day long.

Be sure to get in early though as many of the cabanas are often claimed for by 10am. You can snack on tapas and large meat and cheese platters or move to sit-down Seminyak restaurants that are available within the beach club.

Another popular beach club is Cocoon on Double Six Beach that has become known as the beach with the best nightlife in Seminyak. Cocoon Beach Club is very inviting with a pool right in the centre and serving funky cocktails all day and night.

Ku De Ta is also another popular choice.

You can also book beach club transfers so you can avoid any hassle with the taxis and not have to drive yourself if you drink!

To counter all that partying and beach lounging time there are a number of options to keep up your health regime (or start one) while staying in Seminyak. You can even keep fit on the beach with boot camps right by the water.

You can find these classes at 2BeFitBali. Another option is a sunset run where you’ll be spoiled with excellent and colourful views.

Join a yoga retreat

There are a number of yoga retreats in Seminyak that are the perfect length to add onto your Bali holiday. Many are only a couple of days while some are a week long. Either way, joining a yoga retreat could be the perfect way for you to start or end your trip feeling relaxed and calm.

Take a cooking class

You can’t leave Bali without taking a cooking class. Seminyak is one of the best areas to take a cooking class as there are a number of options available.

Balinese dishes are different from others in Indonesia with their own complex and unique flavours. It’s very interesting to learn about and you’ll have the pleasure of making multiple dishes from soups to dinners and desserts.

Go shopping

There are few Seminyak attractions but shopping is one of them as its a top shopping destination in Bali. Since so many expats choose to set up base here they open boutiques ranging from clothing to home furnishings and more.

The area is definitely known to be more high-end with trendy pieces and the latest fashion. Big brand names also open up shops too that include surf shops and fashion. You can find the majority of shopping in Seminyak on Jalan Laksmana which is one of the top shopping streets in all of Bali.

Spend the day at Tropicola

This is a beach club but deserves a mention on its down because it’s one of the trendiest (and brightest) beach clubs there is in Bali!

Tropicola is great as a daytime hangout on the striped lounges and under the bright yellow umbrellas. Some days there are giant watermelon floaties in the pool and big balls being thrown around. At night the upstairs turns into a dance floor and the beat drops.

The food is yummy, the cocktails colourful and the entire space is awesome not just for a fun day but also for the perfect Insta pic. It’s one of the places to visit in Seminyak.

Get cultured

Though Seminyak is most known for being a high-end holiday destination, there are still local things to see in Seminyak as culture is still present. It’s often masked by the shops and villas throughout Seminyak but visiting one or two of the temples will give you a glimpse into Balinese life.

Pura Masceti is an agricultural temple which is used by farmers. Pura Petitenget is a sea temple. Both fend off evil spirits and if you’re lucky you might catch a celebration at these places to visit in Seminyak!

Pamper yourself

Is it really a proper holiday if you didn’t spend some time pampering yourself? Allow yourself some time to truly relax with a visit to the spa for a manicure, pedicure, massage or to get your hair done.

Spas are really attractions in Seminyak with how beautiful some are! A traditional Balinese massage uses oil and is not as rough as a Thai massage but still enough to work the deep tissue.

Prices at spas are very affordable, starting at 90,000 and going up, but you can also choose to splurge and get a luxury treatment. Luxury treatments are still very affordable, typically 250,000 at a high-end spa.

Check out Nyaman Gallery

Art lovers need to head to Nyaman Gallery where they can find art from up and coming Balinese and Indonesian artists. The gallery is great to check out because of the range of art available. Paintings are prominent but there is also hand blown glass, sculptures, ceramics and even wearable art.

All of the pieces that are displayed are for sale so stop by here if you’re looking to decorate with something unique and to support local artists.

Try the waves

Get yourself active in the water by surfing , windsurfing, wakeboarding or kite surfing with these Seminyak activities. You can hit the waves just off of the beach which makes the water conditions ideals for kite surfing.

Though the waves aren’t as consistent as other areas in Bali, you’ll still have a good chance of getting some. There are several surf schools in Seminyak or you’re able to rent your own equipment along the beach.

Enjoy water sports

If surfing or kite surfing isn’t your thing, try a change of activities in Seminyak. There are a few options to enjoy that are less active and more leisurely water sports such as jet-skiing, sea walking (those big yellow helmets you wear to go underwater), parasailing or banana boating.

Get your caffeine dose at cute cafes

Along with the boutique shops, expats have opened plenty of cafes for you to get your daily caffeine dose from. Honestly, the cafes are some of the best places to visit in Seminyak!

Either way, you won’t be disappointed with the cafe scene in Seminyak as they’re pretty much Seminyak tourist attractions that you can’t miss. Some good places to check out are Revolver, Cage Organic and Grain Bali.

Visit Escape Room Bali

Just in case you need a break from the beaches or you hit an especially rainy day in Bali, you can hide from the heat or rain with some indoor entertainment at Escape Room Bali. There are four immersive escape rooms where groups of 2-6 figure out puzzles and use clues to escape the rooms in a limited amount of time.

Experience the Seminyak nightlife

This is one of the best things to do in Seminyak. Nightlife in Seminyak varies from wild club parties to chilled out lounges to relaxed fine dining restaurants. Whatever you choose, there is an option for you.

Clubs often bring in well-known DJs from around the globe so for a night of dancing hit up these hot spots: Ku De Ta Bali, Potato Head Beach Club, Red Ruby Club, OPIVM Bali Nightclub, Mirror Bali Lounge and Club or Motel Mexicola.

For dining or lounge options that are relaxed visit La Favela, Single Malt Bar, Sarong Bali, La Lucciola or Barbacoa Bali.

Visit Tanah Lot

Tanah Lot is one of the most famous temples in Bali not only because of its scenic location but also because it has significant religious meaning to the Balinese.

A Hindu shrine sits atop of a rock that juts out of the water which is only too fitting as Tanah Lot translates to “land in the sea.”

Tanah Lot is most spectacular (and popular) during sunset so if you wish to avoid the crowds then visit during the day. It is about a 30-minute drive away, making it popular for things to do near Seminyak. Transfers are available, and the entrance is 65,000 rupiah.

Take a day trip

Seminyak has plenty to do but it’s also a great place to base yourself because of its central location. Taking a day trip is a great option to see more of Bali and many tours and trips have pick ups in Seminyak so you can see even more beautiful parts of Bali!

A few popular day trips are to Ubud , the culture hub of Bali that’s also known for its nature and Nusa Penida , the island made famous because of Kelingking Beach (T-Rex Cliff), it’s extremely blue waters and manta rays!

Canggu is also the area next to Seminyak and has even more trendy cafes and beach clubs (and is my personal favourite area of Bali because I live there part of the year!).

Seminyak Accommodation

Read my detailed Seminyak accommodation guide to find the best places from budget to luxury, hostels to hotels and villas.

How to Get to Seminyak

Seminyak is a 40-50 minute drive from the Bali airport. To get from the airport to you can hire a taxi which will be the most expensive option, a private driver transfer or book a transfer through your accommodation. I recommend booking a private driver or arranging something through your accommodation to avoid the hassle of taxis at the airport.

From other areas in Bali, you can also choose to use a taxi or private driver. Or you can choose to use Grab, Uber or Go-Jek (the Indonesian version of Grab and Uber). Be aware that these apps don’t pick up in all spots because of the taxi mafia but they do drop off everywhere.

I recommend booking a private driver as they usually around the same price or a little bit higher than the ride sharing apps without any hassle.

Getting Around Seminyak

To get around Seminyak you have the same options are you do for getting to Seminyak. Hire a taxi, private car or organize transport through your accommodation. You can also hire a Grab, Uber or Go-Jek. These ride-sharing services also offer motorbike drivers too so you can get around even cheaper than a driver with a car.

Lastly, you can hire a motorbike to get around for 50,000 per day. Be careful driving! There is a lot of traffic in Bali so I recommend learning in a parking lot before you head out if you’ve never driven before.

Enjoy your time sightseeing in Seminyak and enjoy Bali!

Continue planning your Bali holiday…

Santo Mikael Church

The surrounding which is enthralling and made beautiful with the presence of lush green trees and enjoyable fragrance of island flowers, St Mikael Christian Protestant Church is a must visit when you come to Bali. A picturesque haven that conducts weddings like in heaven, the church seems to be very attractive and peaceful. The gothic style of the church has been a point of discussion in the past but it continued serving the protestant community in Bali for last 30 years pleasantly. Flanked by the nature in a superb manner, this church has unnoticeable features carved on the walls of it.

Highlights:  Since the church is quite famous for wedding, a lot of believers come to partake in the most auspicious ceremony in one’s life and to seek the unending blessings of God. Oberoi Flea Market

Oberoi Flea Market

For a quick shopping in Seminyak, you can run into the vast arena of multiple items ranging from clothes to leather bags to shoes. Among the menagerie of shopping that can be seen in Bali, selecting the flea market is a choice to be made out of a dice but it is worth spending some time before you return to your native. You can stroll around and find the colourful designs printed on clothes and similar items.

The shops are arrayed in a beautiful way so that you will feel at ease to cover all of them in one go. You are free to bargain and grab the best summer and beach fashion collections from here.

Pura Tanah Lot

About 20 kilometers northwest of Kuta, Pura Tanah Lot ("Pura" means temple in Balinese) is one of Bali's most iconic temples. Its spectacular seaside setting, on a rocky islet surrounded by crashing waves, is a major wow factor.

For the Balinese people, it is one of the most sacred of all the island's sea temples. Every evening, throngs of tourists from Kuta, Legian, and Sanur find their way through a labyrinth of lanes lined by souvenir sellers to watch the sun setting behind the temple.

Pura Tanah Lot was built at the beginning of the 16th century and is thought to be inspired by the priest Nirartha, who asked local fishermen to build a temple here after spending the night on the rock outcrop.

Although foreigners can't enter any of the temples in the complex, you can walk across to the main temple at low tide. It's also fun to wander along the paths, taking photos and soaking up the magnificent setting.

Batu Bolong

From Tanah Lot, you can stroll along tropically landscaped pathways to beautiful Batu Bolong , another sea temple perched on a rock outcrop with an eroded causeway connecting it to the shore.

After viewing the various temples and shrines, save time to relax at one of the clifftop restaurants and cafés here and sample the famous Kopi luwak (civet coffee) . In some of the cafés, friendly civets snooze on the tables, offering fun Instagram-worthy photo ops.

When visiting any temples in Bali, be sure to dress respectfully, and wear a sarong and sash.

Mount Batur at sunrise

Every day in Bali's predawn darkness, hundreds of visitors begin the trek up the 1,700-meter summit of Mount Batur. Once at the top, they watch the sun rise above the lush mosaic of mist-shrouded mountains and the caldera far below. If you're looking for romantic things to do in Bali for couples, this should be top on your list.

This sacred active volcano lies in Kintamani District in Bali's central highlands, about an hour's drive from Ubud. The hike, along well-marked trails, is relatively easy and usually takes about two to three hours. Guided treks typically include a picnic breakfast, with eggs cooked by the steam from the active volcano. On a clear day, the views are spectacular, stretching all the way across the Batur caldera; the surrounding mountain range; and beautiful Lake Batur, the island's main source of irrigation water.

Sturdy hiking shoes are essential, and it's advisable to wear layers, as the temperature can be cool before sunrise.

You can also combine a trip here with a visit to one of Bali's most important temples, Pura Ulun Danu Batur, on the lake's northwest shore, and a therapeutic soak in hot springs at the beautiful village of Toya Bungkah on the banks of Lake Batur.

Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu) is one of the Bali's most famous temples, thanks to its magnificent clifftop setting. It presides over plunging sea cliffs above one of Bali's best surf spots.

In Balinese, "Ulu" means "tip" or "land's end," and "Watu" means rock, a fitting name for the location of the temple on the Bukit Peninsula, along the island's southwestern tip. Like Pura Tanah Lot, sunset is the best time to visit , when the sky and sea glow in the late afternoon light.

Archaeological finds here suggest the temple is of megalithic origin, dating from around the 10th century. The temple is believed to protect Bali from evil sea spirits, while the monkeys who dwell in the forest near its entrance are thought to guard the temple from bad influences (keep your belongings securely stashed away from their nimble grasp).

A scenic pathway snakes from the entrance to the temple, with breathtaking viewpoints along the way. Only Hindu worshippers are allowed to enter the temple, but the beautiful setting and the sunset Kecak dance performances that take place here daily are more than worth the visit.

The temple lies about 25 kilometers from Kuta.

Ubud Monkey Forest

Visiting the Monkey Forest, also known as the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, is one of the top things to do in Ubud, Bali. It's also one of the best places to visit in Bali if you're an animal lover or photographer. You can walk here in about 10 minutes from the town center in Ubud.

Besides the entertaining troops of grey long-tailed macaques that make their home here, a large part of the appeal is the evocative jungle setting where the monkeys roam free. Paved pathways lead through thick forests of giant banyan and nutmeg trees, where moss-covered statues and ancient temples loom through the dense foliage, imparting an almost mystical feel.

The forest is intended to represent the harmonious coexistence between humans and animals. It also conserves rare plants and is used as a location for researching macaque behavior, particularly their social interaction.

On the southwest side of the forest is one of the three temples found here: the 14th-century Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal . Here, hundreds of monkeys swing through the trees and clamber over the walls.

Carved deities in the Ubud Monkey Forest

In the northwest of the forest, an ancient bathing temple, Pura Beji , nestles next to a cool stream and makes a beautiful backdrop for watching the monkeys' antics.

While visiting the forest, make sure to secure your belongings, and avoid direct eye contact with the animals (and smiling), as this can be interpreted as a sign of aggression. It's also a good idea not to bring any food into the area.

Puri Saren Royal Ubud Palace

Made famous by the book and movie Eat, Pray, Love , Ubud is also the epicenter of Balinese art and culture. This is where the modern Balinese art movement was born, with the surrounding royal palaces and temples acting as the main patrons.

Today, several excellent local museums and galleries celebrate its evolution and traditions. Art gazing is particularly rewarding here, as many collections are housed in traditional Balinese buildings surrounded by serene tropical gardens.

Colorful sarongs at the Ubud Art Market

For an overview of Balinese art, your first stops should be Agung Rai Museum of Art ( ARMA) and the Neka Art Museum, which lie within a short stroll of the Ubud Monkey Forest. Collections at both include works ranging from traditional to contemporary, including kris (ceremonial daggers), photography, and classical wayang (puppet-figure) paintings.

Other art galleries and museums in the Ubud area that might be of interest to art lovers include Setia Darma House of Masks & Puppets featuring ceremonial masks from Asia and beyond; Museum Puri Lukisan, spanning a range of Balinese artistic styles; and the Don Antonio Blanco Museum, at the artist's former home and studio.

If shopping for art is more your style, don't miss the Ubud Art Market. This labyrinth of stalls brims with carvings, sculptures, jewelry, sarongs, paintings, and homewares and is one of the top tourist attractions in Ubud. Bargaining is essential, and a good rule of thumb is to counter with half the asking price and barter upwards from there, always with a smile.

Ornate carved door in the Puri Saren Royal Ubud Palace

Opposite the market, the Puri Saren Royal Ubud Palace is also worth a visit. Attending a traditional Balinese dance performance during the evening here is one of the top things to do in Bali at night – especially for families. The colorful costumes and hypnotic music will dazzle young and old. During the day, it's a beautiful place to photograph some of the architectural features, and stroll through the gardens.

Looking for things to do in Bali with kids to soak up the local culture? Sign up for an art workshop at a local village. Traditional painting, mask-making, and jewelry making are just some of the activities that might appeal to creative young minds.

Jatiluwih rice terraces

Want to visit the beautiful emerald-hued rice fields that you see on all the Bali tourist brochures and Instagram posts? The Tegallalang or Jatiluwih rice terraces should be at the top of your sightseeing list — especially if you're a photographer.

About a 30-minute drive north of Ubud, Tegallalang Rice Terraces are one of the most famous areas to photograph these iconic landscapes and absorb their timeless beauty. Be aware that locals ask for donations along the most popular trail through the rice fields here, and many request fees for entrance and parking along the road. A relaxing way to enjoy the lush landscapes is at one of the many restaurants and cafés overlooking the fields.

About a 90-minute drive from Ubud, the Jatiluwih rice terraces cover more than 600 hectares of rice fields along the hillsides of the Batukaru mountain range and tend to be less crowded than Tegallalang. You'll also find fewer tourist touts here, so it's easier to walk around and explore without being hassled.

Both of these locations use the traditional water management cooperative called "subak," a UNESCO-recognized irrigation system that dates to the 9th century .

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan

The 17th-century Pura Ulun Danu Bratan is one of Bali's most picturesque temple complexes. It sits on a small island along the western shore of Lake Bratan, in the cool highlands of central Bali. Set against the imposing backdrop of Gunung Bratan, the thatched temples reflect on the lake, and when the water levels rise, they seem to float on its surface.

Lake Bratan is one of Bali's main sources of irrigation and drinking water, and the temple complex is dedicated to Dewi Danu, goddess of the sea and lakes.

An unusual feature is the Buddhist stupa on the left of the entrance to the first courtyard, with figures of Buddha meditating in the lotus position in niches on the square base. The stupa reflects the adoption of Buddhist beliefs by Balinese Hindus.

The best time to visit this sacred Hindu temple complex is early in the day, before the tourist buses arrive. The temple is especially picturesque in the soft morning light, when cool mist sometimes cloaks the lake and the mountains beyond. You can also hire a canoe and paddle out on the lake to explore the meru (thatched shrines) at close range.

Not far from the temple complex, the Bali Botanic Garden (Kebun Raya Bali) is also worth a visit, with its beautiful bamboo forests, begonias, orchid collection, and medicinal plants.

Address: Jalan Bedugul - Singaraja, Candikuning, Baturiti, Kabupaten Tabanan

Seminyak designer fashion

Bali is known for its flamboyant designers and fabulous shopping, and you'll find the best examples of Balinese design along the busy streets of Seminyak. Cutting-edge designer fashion, surf and swimwear, jewelry, furniture, and homewares are just some of the items you can buy at the chic shops and busy market stalls here.

Top boutiques include Biasa , Magali Pascal, and Bamboo Blonde . Sea Gypsy is a favorite for jewelry, and Drifter Surf Shop & Cafe offers a collection of surf and skateboard gear.

The two main shopping malls are Seminyak Square and Seminyak Village , but you'll probably find better deals in the smaller shops lining the streets.

Looking for a real bargain? Head to the Seminyak Flea Markets near Seminyak Square, where you'll find stalls crammed with clothing, jewelry, carvings, and handicrafts.

Seminyak is also home to some of Bali's best beach resorts, restaurants, and art galleries.

Nusa Dua Beach

Want an escape from Bali's urban buzz? Nusa Dua Beach is your answer. Here, you can recline on a comfortable sun lounger, cool drink in hand, and listen to the gentle slosh of surf on silky, white sands. You won't get that cultural hit you'll find elsewhere in Bali – this is a gated resort area on its own private peninsula after all, but if it's peace and relatively pristine sands you seek, you'll find it here, at one of Bali's best beaches .

Some of Bali's best luxury beach resorts preside over this sweeping stretch of shore, and resort staff work hard to keep the sand clean and clear of trash. Popular things to do at Nusa Dua include strolling for miles along the shore, swimming, surfing, parasailing, and sunbathing, but you might need to pay a fee or eat at one of the resorts to use their sun loungers. Still, if you're after a top Bali beach experience, Nua Dua ticks the box.

When you tire of the beach, you can sign up for some pampering at a posh resort spa or browse the chic shops at Bali Collection, an open-air shopping mall. A paved promenade skirts the shore for off-sand strolling between the resorts and attractions. With all this relaxation on tap, no wonder Nusa Dua is one of the top places to visit in Bali for a honeymoon.

Pura Besakih

More than a thousand years old, Pura Besakih is known as the Mother Temple for a reason: It's the holiest Hindu temple complex in Bali – and the biggest.

Set in a spectacular location on the southern slopes of Mount Agung, at an altitude of 1,000 meters, Pura Besakih is actually a series of many different temples, which serve as the spiritual center for the Balinese people. Pura Penataran Agung is the largest.

Lush rice paddies and forests ring this temple complex, and many important festivals take place here; you might be lucky enough to see one during your visit.

Plan to spend about three hours touring the temples. It's also a good idea to wear comfortable walking shoes – you'll need to walk a fair distance and climb many stairs.

Insider's Tip: Locals trying to sell sarongs, incense, guiding services, and various other items bombard visitors at the gates here, but your ticket includes everything that you'll need during your visit. The best time to visit Pura Besakih is early in the morning before the tourist buses arrive.

Nusa Lembongan beach

Craving a slower-paced Bali, without the crowds, traffic, and tourist touts? The Nusa Islands are where you'll find it. They are also a great place in Bali for couples who crave a little more serenity than they might find on the mainland.

The most popular of the three islands is Nusa Lembongan, about 20 kilometers offshore from Sanur and easily accessible by speedboat. Surfing, snorkeling, diving, kayaking, and stand up paddleboarding are the main activities here, and the top attractions include beautiful Dream Beach ; Mushroom Bay ; and the Devil's Tears rock outcrop, with views of crashing surf erupting over the rocks. Many locals still make their living from seaweed farming, and you can watch them harvesting it by the shore.

The neighboring island, Nusa Ceningan , lies just over a bridge from Nusa Lembongan, with a beautiful blue lagoon.

The largest of the island trio, Nusa Penida , is a quick boat ride away. Rock formations, caves, and a bird sanctuary are Nusa Penida's top draws, and diving is one of the most popular things to do here, with the chance to see manta rays, sunfish, and turtles. Don't miss the steep hike down to Kelinking Beach , also known as T-Rex Bay, to bask on your own slice of golden sand, backed by soaring sea cliffs – it's one of the top beaches in Asia .

Accommodation on the islands ranges from rustic huts to luxury villas.

Surfer at sunset in Kuta Beach

Yes, it's crowded and persistent hawkers stalk the beach, but this famous stretch of sand, along with neighboring Legian and Seminyak Beaches just to the north, is one of the most happening places to visit in Bali. You'll have a fun day out here – especially if you're a beginner surfer or you just want to soak up the scene.

You can book surf lessons and rent surfboards, boogie boards, sun loungers, and umbrellas directly from vendors set up on the sand, and plenty of cafés and restaurants border the beach. Beach vendors are easily dissuaded with a polite "no thank you," but an icy cold coconut sloshing with juice served directly to your sun lounger can be a blessing on a sultry day.

Kuta Beach is one of the best places for young travelers who are looking for a livelier vibe than the sleepy beach resorts offer.

Fisherman on Kuta Beach

For a more peaceful slice of coast on the island, head to the soft sands of Sanur Beach , Jimbaran Beach, or Nusa Dua ( Geger Beach here has public access ) .

Surfers should check out Dreamland , Canggu , Balangan , Bingin , Padang-Padang , or the cliff-fringed hidden coves of Uluwatu .

Lempuyang Temple (Pura Lempuyang)

If you've ever seen the famous Instagram photo of people at the Gates of Heaven and wondered about the location, Pura Penataran Agung Lempuyang is where they posed. Often just called "Lempuyang Temple" (Pura Lempuyang), this famous structure is actually one of a series of temples peppering the highlands of Mount Lempuyang. Tourists come here to capture a photo standing between the towering dragon staircases, which frame the misty peak of Mount Agung.

If you have time, it's worthwhile visiting the other temples while you're here. Pura Luhur Lempuyang is one of Bali's most sacred temples, and one of the hardest to access. Ready for some exercise? The temple lies at the top of a calf-sculpting hike up 1,700 steps through the steamy jungle to almost 1,200 meters above sea level. Keep an eye out for the grey long-tailed macaques scampering around the forest along the way.

The hike to Pura Luhur Lempuyang usually takes around 1.5 to two hours, depending on your fitness level, but once at the top, you'll be rewarded with the mystical beauty of an ancient relic – and spectacular views. Not up for the hike? You might be able to pay a local to whisk you to the end of the asphalt road on a motorbike to shorten the trek.

Insider tip: Try to visit on a clear day for the best views, and bring a sarong, otherwise you might have to rent one at the temple. Also note that local villagers request "donations" at this famous spot.

Sidemen Valley

About 90 minutes' drive northeast of Ubud, the emerald-hued Sidemen Valley evokes the feel of Old Bali, before the tourist throngs descended on the island. Sleepy villages snuggle in the valley amid cascading rice terraces, and cloud-capped Mount Agung looms in the background like a benevolent sentry.

A highlight of a visit here is strolling around the small villages. This is where the locals still tend to their traditional activities, surrounded by farmland and rice paddies. You can also hike through the countryside to the summit of Mount Agung, or trek through the rice fields and lush countryside past cocoa and coffee plantations.

Other popular things to do here include rafting the rivers; yoga retreats ; and taking part in cultural activities such as dancing, carving, or traditional weaving.

Bali homestays and B&Bs are particularly popular in this area, but you'll also find some luxury villas overlooking the rice fields.

Sekumpul Waterfall

Sekumpul Waterfall is considered by many to be Bali's most beautiful waterfall . Located in the Singaraja region, about 66 kilometers north of Ubud, this tucked-away tourist attraction is actually a series of about seven falls, cascading like long misty veils over the lip of a lush, jungle-clad cliff.

Note that if you choose to drive yourself here, locals might try and stop you well before the entrance, demanding exorbitant entrance and parking fees. It's a good idea to hire a local guide who knows how to negotiate these roadblocks and access the correct trailhead to the falls.

The three- to four-hour round-trip trek passes by rice terraces and local villages rimmed with rambutan and durian trees, and continues through dense tropical jungle. It can be strenuous in parts, as you need to hike down slippery steps and slosh through a river, but once you arrive, you can cool off with a refreshing swim at the base of the falls.

This is a great adventure for nature lovers who want a taste of wild Bali far from the touristy resorts.

Tirta Empul Temple

Dating from around 960 CE, Tirta Empul Temple (Pura Tirta Empul) in the lush tropical forest of Central Bali, offers a glimpse into a sacred purification ritual.

This important temple complex, a national cultural heritage site , is divided into three courtyards. The focal point is the large, rectangular pool, fed by a holy mountain spring, where locals come to pray and soak in the healing waters that gush from a series of sculpted spouts.

If you wish to join the locals in the cleansing ritual, it's best to ask an experienced guide first to make sure you respect the customs. You must enter the water fully clothed, wearing a sarong and sash, and it's best to explore the temple complex first, as you are not allowed to drip water in the courtyards.

Waterbom Bali

Wondering about places to visit in Bali with the family? Plan a day at Waterbom Bali. This action-packed water park, in the heart of Kuta, has something for every member of the family. Kids can splash in the swimming pools; drift down the Lazy River; or zoom down one of the many twisting water slides and rides, with names like the Python, Green Viper, and Super Bowl.

Moms and dads can relax with a reflexology session, manicure or pedicure, or fish spa therapy. Restaurants and cafés cater to a range of different diets, and the grounds are landscaped with large, shady trees and beautiful tropical gardens, making this a refreshing respite from the heat on a hot tropical day.

Ever wanted to try wakeboarding, waterskiing, kneeboarding, or skurfing (a cross between surfing and waterskiing) in a relatively safe environment? Bali Wake Park is the place to visit for this and more exhilarating water park fun. Kids will love Aqualand here – it's a giant inflatable obstacle course on the lake.
