Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova Review (Switch)

Jankom Pog abides

Version Reviewed: European

  • review by Gavin Lane Fri 14th Oct 2022

It's been a long road getting from there to here. Star Trek fans might have a whole new constellation of shows to enjoy (or complain about amirite ), but when it comes to video games the range of available options has been decidedly slimmer, especially on Nintendo systems . In fact, Star Trek: Conquest on Wii was the last time the franchise beamed onto a Nintendo platform, way back in 2007. After such a long leave of absence, it falls to Tessera Studios and the family-focused, licenced-IP-friendly publisher Outright Games to return to the final frontier with a cooperative action-puzzler based on Nickelodeon's franchise spin-off. The question is: Can Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova bring the series back to Nintendo consoles with a bang?

Well, yes and no. Any Trekkie worth their salt knows that the real appeal of the show and its umpteen spin-offs is not mapping stars or studying nebulae or modifying the main deflector to emit an inverse tachyon pulse but, instead, watching a tight-knit crew bonding over time and becoming a family as they problem-solve and perform their assigned roles with competence and camaraderie. Seeing positive examples of teamwork feels restorative and refreshing given the relative chaos of the world today, just one way in which Star Trek gives hope for the future. Tessera has done well to drill down on a key theme of Trek — working together to overcome adversity and find smart solutions to serious problems — and divert that power directly into Supernova's core.

Much of the game's charm relies on your familiarity with the characters from the show — so if you haven't caught up, you'll want to do so. In a nutshell, a motley bunch of youngsters led by 'Captain' Dal R'El commandeer the USS Protostar (a prototype Starfleet vessel they find mysteriously buried on a planet in the Delta Quadrant) and escape captivity with the help of a holographic version of Captain Janeway, of Voyager fame. This game is set in a mid-season gap and features a mystery centred around a star that's about to go nova, the evil robot Drednock, and the Protostar-hunting Diviner, who also happens to be the father of Gwyn, one of the stowaways onboard the ship and the character you'll be playing along with Dal.

Gameplay involves navigating 3D planet-based environments and switching between Gywn and Dal to solve various puzzles blocking your path, typically involving powerlines, switches, blocks, transporters, and more. Along the way, you'll rescue your other crewmates who return to the Protostar and periodically beam down to unblock your path when you open a channel. Jankom Pog, for example, uses his engineering nous to unlock jammed doors, while Rok smashes through big piles of stone. Progression is entirely linear, although you can revisit completed stages at any time to pick up items you missed, or ones that require assistance from a crewmember you hadn't rescued on your first run. Hitting 'ZL' activates a pulse from your Tricorder which highlights significant objects and shows the route to your next objective if you need a hand — a great help for younger players, although in practice we almost never used it.

Dal and Gywn have different abilities you'll have to employ in finding puzzle solutions. Dal, for example, can lift heavy objects for Gywn to crawl under and has a Chameleon ability which enables him to sneak past security cameras. Gywn can fire a tendril from her weapon to form a tightrope for Dal to traverse larger gaps they aren't able to get across with their standard dash abilities. And so on.

Drop-in co-op is available for a second player, and single players simply hit 'A' to switch between characters as needed. The AI for the one you're not controlling is relatively intelligent, fighting enemies as required and generally keeping up with you, although you'll have to switch to perform specific actions. Janeway awards scores and medals at the end of every mission, incentivising some light competition, and completing the game unlocks 'cheats' which makes going back to collect missing items and getting that 100% on your save file less of a grind.

Nothing Supernova presents — character abilities, environmental puzzles, upgrades — is revolutionary. If you've ever redirected beams of light or pushed blocks in a Zelda dungeon, you'll have seen everything Supernova has to offer before. However, it's all assembled cleverly and competently, and the puzzles really pick up in later levels as you start destroying power nodes, transporting light-directing blocks around the place, and encountering temporal ruptures which see each character occupying the same space in different time periods via split-screen. As a game aimed at younger players, there's nothing impossibly taxing, but we were pleasantly surprised by the depth and ingenuity on display in the latter half. Even if you know absolutely nothing about Prodigy's story or characters, there's still fun to be had here.

Various relics, creatures, and assorted plant life litter each level, which unlock health, dash, and weapon upgrades purchased with collectible crystals. You'll fire phasers at scorpion-like enemies known as Watchers. They come in several flavours — some with shields, some that throw mines, others which explode on death — but you're essentially fighting variants of the same foe over and over. This is the weakest part of the whole affair, with only the later levels providing any real challenge and combat itself being fairly limited. Enter an area, area locks down, dispatch all enemies that appear, continue to next area via an environmental puzzle, repeat. It's a familiar loop, with the combat being the weakest part.

A generous auto-lock when you fire your phaser(s) makes offing Watchers a simple case of firing, waiting for your phasers to cool down, and then firing again. Dal can switch between three phaser types: standard dual hand phasers, a rifle, or a cannon , but we stuck resolutely dual wielding the first option, upgraded to the max, and used Gwyn for her melee attacks only when necessary. Melee combat lacks punch so we stuck to our guns when possible. Once you've rescued crewmates, you can choose one at the beginning of a mission to assist in combat via aerial assault once an unseen meter has filled — although these AOE attacks never felt terribly effective. Murf's slime attack seemed to chip the most HP away, so we stuck with that once we'd unlocked it.

All the voice actors from the show feature here, and for the most part their work is excellent, bar a couple of odd line readings ("I'll take it from here!") and some repetition for which they can't be blamed. If Tessera wants to patch out the grunts Dal and Gwyn make every single time they dash, we'd welcome it. Every switch between characters is accompanied by one of a small handful of remarks, too, which begin to grate.

Other minor annoyances and wrinkles crop up here and there. The dash move ('B') also being the context-sensitive button is one of them, meaning that if you're standing beside a sign and dash away, you're going to start reading rather than running. We also encountered a little jank in one level where Dal got pushed off a ledge and fell through to a lower part of the level with a lift that required both characters to operate. We couldn't replicate the fall with Gwyn, so we had to restart that section. Glowing stones function as save points, but some levels are surprisingly lengthy, especially given the target demographic. Although the later levels are broken up with save points, you'll need 45 minutes or more to get through a couple of them.

We have to say that, despite its imperfections, Supernova grew on us the longer we stuck with it. We probably spent around ten hours going through its 12-stage campaign, but there were plenty of relics left to find in previous levels (including several famous items from Star Trek lore) and Holodeck missions to complete. If you're a parent looking for something to play with your kid while also indoctrinating them into a strange new world, Supernova offers a good Trekkin' time. It's Star Trek, but with the odd Baby Shark reference thrown in to make it more relatable to people born after 1973. To say Tessera's work here is competent sounds like we're damning with faint praise, but we did enjoy ourselves.

As with all other aspects, the performance on Switch is fine, with snappy loads, a frame rate which held steady for us, and visuals that remained crisp in handheld or docked mode. Things get a little fuzzy on the Protostar if playing portable, but Tessera has done a decent job scaling this Unreal Engine game for the platform. Don't get us wrong, this is hardly a flagship visual vessel, but given the relative distance from which you view the action, it does the job of conveying the show's CG style well, with budget-conscious, comic book-style montages rather than CG for the game's intro and outro cutscenes. With stages set across just three planets, we would have liked a little more variety, but what's here is pleasant enough.

For Trek-starved fans with Nintendo consoles, Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova does a good job — far better than you might expect — of channelling the show's essence and appeal into a light, kid-friendly co-op adventure with plenty of puzzles. By tapping into those Trek tenets of friendship, cooperation, and problem-solving, Tessera Studios has created something far closer in spirit to the series than any dry space sim, even if (much like the inexperienced crew running the Protostar) it can often feel a little rough around the edges. It's not set to stun, then, but it shows plenty of promise, especially if you have young cadets eager to enlist.

This one's release came out of nowhere...but I think at some point I'm going to pick it up.

Nice! I binged the show when the game was announced so I am ready! There’s coffee in that Nebula!

  • nessisonett

@RogerRoger Seems decent enough!

@nessisonett That it does! Thanks for the tag!

Honestly, even though I pre-ordered a physical copy as soon as Terranly possible, I was expecting to be all...

...so this review was a pleasant surprise! Should run and look even better on PS5, too. Tomorrow can't come fast enough!

Reading the review just makes me wish there was a Lower Deck game.

Terrible graphics, looks so bland, i would never say that to someone who received this game as a present though, I wouldn’t want to hurt their feelings, it just doesn’t look good that’s all

It looks more like Star Trek Parody.

  • SonOfDracula

I get that devs are on an ever-evolving quest to make unique experiences, but they should seriously consider firing their character designer.

  • OldManHermit

I haven't watched the show, seems like it's aimed more towards younger audiences, but the Protostar is one of the coolest looking star trek ships.

As an old, hearing that a licensed game is decent is great news. A tie-in was typically shovelware that was nigh unplayable back in the day.

  • Sun 16th Oct 2022

@SonOfDracula I didn't like the visuals too, but It's based on a show, so we should blame the artists who did that. Putting that aside, seems interesting enough. Never played a Star Trek game, even though I've always enjoyed the franchise

Star Trek: Prodigy: Supernova Game Review

A Star Trek video game geared toward a younger demographic that the whole family can enjoy.

Review: Star Trek: Prodigy: Supernova

It’s a rare treat when fans have new Star Trek video games to look forward to. Besides the ever-present and generally great Star Trek Online , standalone Star Trek video games just aren’t that common. Just think: the last such game was Star Trek: Bridge Crew , and understandably not everybody wanted to find a few people to play with while wearing VR headsets. Before Bridge Crew , it was Star Trek, released for consoles and PC in 2013 — and that game was only okay and it actually is no longer available for purchase on digital storefronts. Thanks, licensing.

Now, a new arrival on the scene gives gamers something to latch onto, and although Star Trek: Prodigy: Supernova is geared toward a younger demographic, we still walked away pleased enough with the result that we can say it’s worth picking up, especially if you have young ones using the second player control.

Supernova is published by Outright Games, a company known for kids games of various IPs, and developed by Tessera Studios, a Spain-based studio that previously released Intruders: Hide and Seek , a VR-compatible stealth game. Supernova features the voice cast of the TV show, namely Kate Mulgrew as Hologram Janeway, Brett Grey as Dal, Ella Purnell as Gwyn, Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk, Angus Imrie as Zero, Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog and Dee Bradley Baker as Murf. Having the entire cast on board is a huge plus and generally makes the game feel like it belongs in the Prodigy universe.

The game sees players try to repair the Protostar after crashing in a Dyson Sphere and finding the rest of the Protostar crew as they try to avert a star from collapsing. Not a bad plot as far as Star Trek goes, and we could easily picture such a scenario happening in any one of the Star Trek shows. We do recommend you watch or re-watch the existing Prodigy episodes, as this story references previous events in important ways.

The first thing you’ll notice about this game is that it feels like Prodigy . Besides the cast, the animation style of the TV show translates well enough to video game graphics, although don’t expect this game’s visuals to rival the gorgeous animation as seen on TV. Besides the introductory graphic novel-esque cutscene, the rest of the animation has that Prodigy feel.

Regarding the game’s presentation, there are a few cut corners – things like generic lip synch, oft-repeated voice lines (you’ll be hearing a lot of “Captain Dal, ready for action!”), some typos in the subtitles, video settings not saving, and buggy animations at times, but such polish generally falls by the wayside when targeting younger minds. Although we should note most of these minor criticisms are likely easily patchable should Tessera Studios care to do so.

One thing that hits the game’s presentation is the lack of icons for controllers. On the PC version, we were playing with an Xbox controller, but the game always showed generic white icons for the Xbox’s A, X, Y, and B buttons. More than a few people likely rely on seeing the color or letter of the button as much as its position on the controller, so this is a disappointing design choice.

Aiding the game’s presentation is a surprisingly great musical score. Sure, the Prodigy theme song is present when you first start the game and at key points during gameplay, but a sweeping orchestral score helps add moodiness and emotion to the game. Having a notable score is something we totally didn’t expect from this “kids’ game,” so it’s a welcome addition.

For those more serious gamers, we just want to note how unexpectedly happy we were at how well Supernova performs. Our review code was for Steam, and we found Supernova works easily with ultrawide setups right from the start, and the game supports high frame rates no problem. While keyboard/mouse support is available, we found the twin-stick style gameplay feels better on a controller, and you can swap between the two forms of input on the fly.

As you could gather from various trailers, Supernova is a top-down twin stick shooter, where, if playing solo, you can switch between Dal and Gwyn as they shoot, slash, and puzzle-solve their way through the environment. If you are playing co-op, which we highly recommend you do, one player controls Dal and one controls Gwyn. Local co-op is a rarity nowadays, so we are thrilled to see Tessera build their game around this feature. If you’re not playing co-op, the game’s AI does a decent job of controlling the other player when needed, although you’ll be switching between the two characters fairly often and won’t have to rely on AI to progress through the game.

star trek supernova game

While there is not too much in the way of gameplay variety, there’s enough to occupy younger gamers. Dal is stronger with his ranged weapons than his melee weapon, and Gwyn is vice versa, so that helps inform how you can approach battles. These battles usually contain multiple forms of Watchers, an enemy familiar to Prodigy fans. You can also explore the environment to discover collectibles and harvest as many crystals as you can to upgrade your weapons. When you aren’t on one of three planets, you can explore the Protostar. We would have loved to see an Elite Force Virtual Voyager-esque free roam option, but unfortunately Supernova limits you to three rooms: the bridge, a room that houses all your collectibles, and the holodeck.

As you progress through the story, your crew can help you in combat, which is a neat touch that helps the feeling of comradery among the Protostar crew. However, if Tessera Studios makes another Prodigy- based game, we would love to see the crew more equally represented. For now, this is definitely a mostly Dal and Gwyn affair, as they are the only playable characters.

Supernova offers a standard action-adventure game progression system that kids might already be used to based on their previous video game exposure. Explore enough of the environment and you’ll be rewarded with upgrades and collectibles. While fighting, you need to keep an eye on your ranged weapon to make sure it doesn’t overheat. While adults may not find the game too involved, the important thing is that these systems are easily digestible and won’t be an impediment to young players. There is even reason to go back and replay the game’s levels, as each mission awards you accolades for completing certain challenges, including beating a level in so many minutes, something you won’t likely do the first time around.

Taken together, Supernova is a respectable entry point for kids in the Star Trek gaming space. The spirit of the show is carried pretty well into this game’s story, and younger and older players will surely have fun tackling missions together. Don’t expect an AAA-level of polish here, and there are some critiques we would hope Tessera addresses in a future patch.

So, let’s revel in a new Star Trek game arriving on our hard drives, and enjoy some time with our younger family members. Supernova seems to fit the bill in this way.

Star Trek: Prodigy: Supernova is available now digitally on the respective PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch storefronts, and on Amazon for Xbox (digital code), Xbox (physical), Switch (physical), and PlayStation 4 (physical). There doesn’t seem to be a PS5 Amazon listing for the game at this time.

Disclosure: We reviewed Star Trek: Prodigy: Supernova on PC with a pre-release code provided by Outright Games.

We’ll definitely want to check this out in October.

We’re giving UbiSoft’s Bridge Crew a try at the moment.

uhg, again, why do we get poor star trek games? the graphics look like ps2.

i agree, this game is almost laughable. In terms of both gameplay and graphics, it looks like something i would’ve expected to see on 3DS seven years ago.

I’ll probably still buy it anyways tho, just ‘cuz it’s trek. but i don’t expect it to be good lol

I’ll be looking forward to seeing reviews on this, would really like to have a good Trek game for my Switch. Hopefully not ‘too’ juvenile.

I would imagine that it is about as juvenile as the show is.

Perhaps even more.

I think if it’s like 25th anniversary where it has puzzles and exploration on the planet with a good story and some starship combat to mix things up, will be a good game. If it is just a top down shooter well, I don’t think it will compete with Minecraft Dungeons.

I feel harsh judging the game given the show its based on and its intended audience. I just feel like it might fall through the cracks where the market is concerned. Good move putting it out on Switch though.

I’m still very much looking forward to ST: Resurgence, although it’s all gone quiet on that front in recent months. Resurgence looks like a step in the right direction, but there’s a still a long way to go to get back to the golden era of Trek gaming. I can only hope SNW does so well that it allows for a big budget Trek game to be developed somewhere along the way.

Star Wars definitely wins between the two franchises when it comes to gaming currently. Although, to be fair, it’s a lot easier to translate into a game, with all that pew pew-ing etc.

Good point about Resurgence.

We’d been looking to see if a release date was confirmed for PC gaming and realized that there’s been radio silence.

It was originally supposed to be a Spring release, but I guess we’re passed that now. Would they release two Trek games within the same Fall release window? Seems unlikely. Hopefully we hear something soon though.

where is Resurgence?! i hope this doesn’t come out before STR….ugh i don’t want a fisher price star trek game

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova Review

Dave Ozzy

I’d call myself a mid-level trekkie (loved Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, can’t get into Discovery or Picard), but I’m now questioning that label thanks to Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova. Honestly, I had no idea that Star Trek Prodigy, the TV series that this game is based on, even existed. But it’s there, squirreled away on Paramount+ and aimed at younger viewers. I hang my head in shame and hand in my Starfleet lapel pin.

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova is the latest game to come from the collaboration between Paramount+ and Outright Games, a deal that has already produced Dreamworks Dragons: Legends of the Nine Realms . It’s also the twenty-millionth game that Outright seem to have unleashed in the past few months, having furnished the holiday period with L.O.L Surprise! B.B.s BORN TO TRAVEL , PAW Patrol: Grand Prix and the previously mentioned Dragons game, among DLC to their other games. But rather than spreading themselves thin, Outright Games are onto something of a quality run. And Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova, rather than bringing the run to a screeching halt, keeps it going.

star trek prodigy supernova review 1

It’s the age-old tale of a starship crash-landing on a planet about to be subsumed by a supernova. Even more thrillingly, the crew of said starship has been teleported out, willy-nilly, across various planets before the crash. It leaves you, Dal R’El and Gwyndala, racing against time to save the crew, fix the Starship Protostar, and yeet out of the system before everyone becomes stardust. But that’s not all! This system has been enslaved by an old nemesis of yours, and they’re harvesting the planets for as much energy as they can before it’s not there anymore.

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova attempts to straddle the grown-up themes of conventional Star Trek, and the attention levels of your average teen, and it gets there, just about. We’re personally not fans of the Marvel-like tone, with everyone quipping like there’s no tomorrow, defusing any potential drama by joking about it (the simmering romance also makes us wince), but there’s a surprising epicness to proceedings, and the themes of slavery and isolationism are a little heavier than you might have expected. It’s actually too talky, in our view, pausing the action too often when we wanted a greater flow. But it’s far from poor quality.

What this is welded onto is an adventure-puzzle game that reminds us a little of Lara Croft: Temple of Osiris , the zoomed out, co-op take on the Tomb Raider universe. Like that game, Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova is unashamedly co-op, to the point that playing it solo feels like you are losing something of the experience. When playing alone, you are constantly tapping B to switch to the other player, when there’s a much greater energy and flow that comes from playing together. If you can find another trekkie, it’s the optimum way to play.

It also shares Temple of Osiris’s viewpoint and mix of combat and puzzling. Roughly one-third of Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova is fighting, which feels about right: Star Trek has always liked a wrestling match with a Gorn, but it’s predominantly cerebral, and so it goes. We expected the combat to be slight and repetitive, and – you know what – it really does knock it out of the park. We’re not talking Devil May Cry here, but there’s substance that we really didn’t expect.

star trek prodigy supernova review 2

Much of the strategy comes from whether you fight close-quarters or at range. The Watchers, the game’s one and only enemy, swarm you, and the latter parts of the game become a firework display of grenades, lasers, charging attacks and explosive death rattles. You’re always on the move, switching between the two attack types, and even switching characters in single-player, as both Dal R’El and Gwyndala have their specialisms. Negotiating this chaos is great fun, and – while there are safety nets in the form of revives and extra life points – it can get pretty challenging. We found ourselves hitting the deck more times than we expected.

But the real reason we like the combat is the choice of weapons. There are three per character, and they are decently inventive and pack quite the punch. Our favourite was a phaser rifle that would absolutely leather the enemies, and we’d swing it round at speed like we were playing a twin-stick shooter. But, equally, there are power-fists that Gwyndala uses that can be charged by holding X, leaping over enemies, or a lance that cuts through Watchers like metallic butter. A lot of work has gone into making these punchy, and it’s time well spent. There’s more heft to the combat than it has any right to have.

Which makes it all the more bewildering that upgrading your combat abilities is so slimline. It’s a bit arse, really, and could have added another dimension with very little work at all. At various points in the campaign, you are arbitrarily told that a weapon can be upgraded. There are three levels of upgrade, and they just dink up the speed or strength. Slightly better are some holodeck challenges that improve your crewmate powers (an automatically triggered effect that deals AOE damage), but those crewmate powers were poor to start off with, and we often forgot they were there.

Away from combat, Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova expects you to think. As you move through chunky, lovingly realised environments, you are often confronted with laser walls and blocked corridors. You are stuck, and your aim is to become unstuck. Often, this means utilising the two characters’ skillsets. Dal R’El can lift up fallen pillars, allowing Gwyndala to duck underneath, or he can don a camouflage suit and escape the view of cameras. Gwyndala, meanwhile, has a disturbing arm-tentacle ability that can create a bridge for Dal R’El. Helping each other through the levels is one flavour of the cooperation.

The other is blocks. Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova absolutely loves a cube: enough that we expected it to feature in the title somewhere. There are heavy blocks, light-emitting blocks, teleporting blocks and switch blocks. There are small blocks and big blocks. You push them, drop them off cliffs, drop them onto switches or teleport them across an arena. This is all in the name of environmental puzzles, and, by golly, there is an endless number of them in Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova.

Now, your reaction to this may differ. The puzzles are supremely well designed: they escalate in difficulty, and no layout is the same as another. They wring every last drop out of cube-based puzzling. But there is an opportunity for fatigue here, and we can imagine teenage trekkies with their Vulcan ears on, slamming down the pad and huffing off to their bedroom, cursing the ‘sodding blocks’. We love a good Sokoban-puzzler , and even we were starting to get sick of all the similar puzzles. Heaven knows what Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova will feel like for players who like combat, but couldn’t give a flying tribble for puzzles.

More so than perhaps any Outright Games title that we’ve played, there is a deal of substance to Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova. Levels can run to thirty minutes in length, and there are plentiful secrets to find in nooks and crannies (although we’d have opted for an upgrade system that better used them). You’re looking at close to ten hours of gameplay here, particularly if you are chasing medals for strong performance in the level. And Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova needed to be substantial: it’s an expensive little title, coming to £44.99 – a world of prices that no Outright Game has ever gone before.

star trek prodigy supernova review 4

Is Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova worth that outlay? Yes, but with some directives. One, bring a second-in-command. This has been designed from the ground up for two players. Two, prepare yourselves for long bouts of puzzling. This isn’t the action-packed romp that you might expect. And three, fans of the series are going to get so much more from the experience. For our part, the goofy dialogue had us wrinkling our nose so much that we looked like a Klingon.

We expected Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova to arrive in a red shirt, virtually dead on arrival. Instead, we’ve got a game with substance and style, and there’s nothing more Star Trek than that.

Critic reviews for star trek prodigy: supernova, nintendo life.

For Trek-starved fans with Nintendo consoles, Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova does a good job - far better than you might expect - of channelling the show's spirit and appeal into a light, kid-friendly co-op adventure with plenty of puzzles. By tapping into those Trek tenets of friendship, cooperation, and problem-solving as a team, Tessera Studios has created something far closer in spirit to the series than any dry space sim, even if (much like the inexperienced crew running the Protostar) it can often feel a little rough around the edges. It's not set to stun, then, but it shows plenty of promise, especially if you have young cadets eager to enlist.

The poor writing and bad direction don't take away too much from the co-op action of this cartoon tie-in. Fans of the show will definitely get more out of it than non-fans.

NintendoWorldReport

Fans of the series will also find plenty to enjoy from familiar characters. While combat can get a little repetitive, the puzzles are genuinely inventive. Ultimately whether a trekkie or not, Supernova provides a reasonably solid experience with fun multiplayer that is approachable for everyone.

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova represents an effort to engage the children's audience not only on TV screens, but also in video games. But for that, it brings too little interesting content, and moreover, the stereotype immediately sets in. So you only have a five-hour journey across 3 planets, where you do the same thing over and over. Moreover, with glitches and a bad camera work.

Rapid Reviews UK

Star Trek as a franchise has gone through quite the revival over the last few years. With shows like ‘Star Trek: Picard’, ‘Star Trek: Discovery’, and ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ to entertain adult “Trekkies”. Not content with leaving Star Trek to the mature crowd, Alex Kurzman has delivered his extended universe to the younger generation too.

Star Trek: Prodigy Supernova has an enjoyable gameplay loop that, undoubtedly, is best enjoyed in local co-op and played with a fan of the show. It doesn’t break new ground in the platforming space and certainly isn’t among the best Star Trek games, but the story really befits the characters and the game stayed fresh enough to remain interesting over the long term.

LadiesGamers.com

For some, the game might be a bit prescriptive. But it’s based on an animated children’s TV programme, so it needs to be playable and enjoyable for that audience. This would be a great introduction to the adventure puzzle genre for younger players. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed playing it. I didn’t need to know anything about the TV series to engage fully with Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova.

WayTooManyGames

Cheapness and slight amount of jank aside, Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova is actually a pretty decent game.

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova Breaks an Infamous Video Game Curse

Artwork for Star Trek Prodigy video game featuring characters posing on dry planet next to large spaceship.

Tie-in games get a bum rap. Often, deservedly so. They can be amazing, but too frequently they’re rushed efforts that seem developed just to make a buck off fans. Some don’t even coalesce with the canon of the franchise they’ve allegedly been created to expand upon. (Don’t forget the notorious E.T. title, which was not only one of the worst video games of all time but also so poorly received that many cartridges were buried in a landfill .)

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova breaks this curse.

Set between the first and second half of Star Trek: Prodigy 's premiere season, the franchise’s all-ages animated series, Supernova succeeds where so many others failed. It’s got solid game mechanics (save for some slightly frustrating camera controls) and fantastic characters (many of them voiced by their TV counterparts), and it actually feels like a story arc that could happen on Prodigy itself. You don’t need to play it to appreciate the show, but you can appreciate the show more if you do.

Believe me when I say I was not expecting to type any of this. Just knowing it was a tie-in game had my hopes about as high as a tribble’s butt. Visions of Street Fighter: The Movie (the game) and Raiders of the Lost Ark for Atari 2600 still haunt me. But it was so well done, I felt compelled to talk to the people who made it. Turns out they knew the low expectations they were up against but were given the tools needed to beat them.

“It’s very rare for a game to tie in to a TV show or a movie to have the level of support that we had,” Martin Korda, a script writer for Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova , told me. “We were given the scripts for all the episodes.”

In addition to scouring those scripts, Korda also worked with Lisa Boyd, one of the show’s writers, to make sure the game’s story would jive with the overall Prodigy universe. According to Boyd, he nailed it. “It was presented to me as already a very authentic Star Trek story,” she says, “I didn’t really need to do much except have Dal and Gwyn flirt a little more.”

But surely it takes more than romance below decks, right? To hear Supernova producer Rudy Lamy tell it, yes. Star Trek has a huge, decades-long canon—and the kind of detail-oriented fans who tend to notice when things created to play in their universe don’t fit. So it was on the game’s creators to make sure not just the story, but all the little details—the things that make a tie-in game tie in with stuff—worked too. Everything from creating meaningful collectibles to giving achievements names that made sense in-universe was fair game.

“[We contacted] dozens of people, working multiple times a week with [ Prodigy networks] Nickelodeon and Paramount+ to get things right, to make sure the gameplay fit,” Lamy says. The team also paid special attention to the audience of Star Trek: Prodigy . They wanted the game to a have an appeal similar to the show’s, making it enjoyable for adults and kids alike.

Those details may seem trivial, but they’re not—and they ensure Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova stays out of the trash for good.

Star Trek: The Earth-Romulan War Explained

Star Trek: 8 Most Powerful Federation Starships, Ranked

Star trek: why did the war between klingons and the federation end, star trek: how portrayals of the klingons have changed since their first appearance, quick links, what and when was the earth-romulan war, what was the legacy of the romulan war, how romulans have remained a key enemy in star trek, why hasn’t the romulan war ever been seen on screen.

  • The Earth-Romulan War is a critical event in Star Trek history, leading to the establishment of the United Federation of Planets.
  • Plans to bring the Romulan War to screen have fallen through, but its build-up and aftermath has been felt through multiple Star Trek series.
  • Despite the franchise never showing the war, Romulans have become a key enemy, known for manipulating events from the shadows of the Beta Quadrant.

The Earth-Romulan War is one of the most important events in Star Trek ’s dense history but also one of the least explored. A combination of factors and missed opportunities have left this explosive war surprisingly vague. Like the Romulans themselves, it has stayed in the shadows.

However, fans have seen a lot of the build-up and even more of the consequences across Star Trek ’s various series. Lurking in the Beta Quadrant, the Romulans have been a persistent threat, underpinning some incredible stories since their iconic first appearance in 1966.

Star Trek: Why Are Romulan and Klingon Starships So Similar?

They may be renowned blood enemies, but have the Romulans and Klingons ever formed a military alliance?

The Earth-Romulan War was first mentioned in the Original Series ’ thrilling introduction to the Romulans, ‘Balance of Terror.’ That game of cat and mouse between the USS Enterprise and a Romulan Bird of Prey was the first time humanity and Romulans saw each other, and oddity explained as view screen technology not being available during the war.

Fans have only seen the build-up to and consequences of the devastating space war in the franchise. It was the crucial final element to turn the treaties and alliances achieved by the missions of Jonathan Archer’s Enterprise NX-01 into the United Federation of Planets.

6 Most Powerful Weapons In Star Trek History, Ranked

Star Trek's rich lore has introduced fans to countless pieces of technology—including extremely powerful weapons capable of great destruction.

During Star Trek: Enterprise , fans saw Romulans seeking to unsettle and disrupt alliances forming on their border. Avoiding the direct continuity issues, the Romulans were a remote threat, seeding tension with drone ships and minefields. This aggression culminated in the Earth-Romulan War between 2156 and 2160 — a major, but unsophisticated interstellar conflict.

As Spock explains in ‘Balance of Terror,’ the war involved primitive ships and atomic weaponry. The war ended with the decisive Battle of Cheron, which inflicted a humiliating defeat on the Romulans at the hand of a Human, Vulcan, Andorian and Tellarite alliance.

The immediate effect was the establishment of the Neutral Zone , creating a buffer zone between the Star Empire and Starfleet that kept each other at arm’s length. However, the most significant impact was the establishment of the United Federation of Planets, as seen in the Enterprise finale ‘These are the Voyages…’ after the series had time jumped the war.

For the Romulans, the defeat would set the stage for centuries of interstellar policy. The political effects within the Romulan Empire lasted well into the 24th century, as seen in TNG episodes like ‘The Defector.’

Star Trek: The Relationship Between Vulcans & Romulans, Explained

What connects these two star-crossed foes, and are they really so different?

Losing the war dictated Romulan tactics for many years, reinforcing their preferred method manipulating from afar. The defeat's influence is felt in their attempts to derail the Khitomer Peace Accords in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and shadowy interference in the Klingon Civil War at the climax of TNG ’s Fourth Season, among other nefarious schemes.

Romulans haven’t had the profile of their louder Beta Quadrant neighbors, the Klingons, but that suits both empires' characters. Still, if anything, the Romulans have been underused. After they were replaced as the villains of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (director Leonard Nimoy thought the theatrical Klingons were a better fit), it took 10 movies for them to take the villainous lead in the final film of the TNG era, Nemesis . Even then, the Romulan Senate had been overthrown by the suppressed inhabitants of Remus and a deranged clone of Jean-Luc Picard.

After skirmishes in the Original Series , some using Klingon-designed ships , TNG reintroduced them as a major villain at the end of Season One. ‘The Neutral Zone’ was an oddly structured episode but repeated the same trick as ‘Balance of Terror.’ After more than half a century of isolation, Romulans reappeared to an unsuspecting Federation with a new look, a devastating new Warbird, and the threat of “We are back.”

6 Darkest Star Trek Characters, Ranked

Despite Star Trek's portrayal of a utopian future, there are many characters throughout the franchise who feature some very dark characteristics.

When Star Trek returned to TV screens after a long break, Star Trek: Discovery chose the Federation-Klingon War as the backdrop to its first season. However, it was notable that a few years later, Strange New Worlds threw Captain Pike into ‘Balance of Terror’ in the alternate reality of its first season finale, ‘A Quality of Mercy.’

By debuting with a bonafide classic episode, the Romulans seem to have won a battle but not a war with the Klingons. Half a century later, ‘Balance of Terror’ continues to be the benchmark for the Romulans, while the Klingons have never been defined by such an iconic introduction.

Star Trek is a huge media franchise with a long history of starships, the Starfleet Federation has had some incredible classes of ships in this time.

One unfortunate similarity between the Klingons and Romulans has dictated the Star Empire’s path in recent years. In Star Trek VI , the explosion of the Klingon moon Praxis led to a new era of peace with the Federation — acting as a bridge between the Original Series and TNG . In 2009’s Star Trek , the destruction of Romulus when its star went supernova inadvertently established the Kelvin timeline and set the stall for the events of Star Trek: Picard .

Fans have been unlucky not to see the Earth-Romulan War on the screen. The closest it has come is through the build-up in Enterprise , where Romulan machinations inadvertently created the alliance that would form the basis of the Federation. Had Enterprise made it beyond four seasons, viewers would undoubtedly have seen more Romulan subterfuge and possibly even the war.

What important moments brought these two warring nations together?

Another missed chance came on the big screen. The Romulan War was intended to provide the backdrop of the 11th movie in the franchise, Star Trek: The Beginning . Bridging Enterprise and the Original Series , the script for The Beginning suggested Jonathan Archer’s Enterprise had been stationed at Risa during the initial Romulan attacks that kicked off the war. The movie was shelved in favor of the Kelvin timeline reboot, which put a young Kirk back in charge of the USS Enterprise opposite the devastating Romulan villain Nero .

Romulan on-screen appearances remain as withdrawn and stealthy as the species, unlike their noisy neighbors in the Klingon Empire. Fans may one day see how the Romulan War unfolded, but until then, it’s unsurprising that the Romulan Star Empire is keeping some secrets to itself.

From the Original Series to Discovery, the Klingons seem to have undergone both plastic surgery and significant cultural changes.

  • J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2009 rejuvenated the franchise with a new timeline, dynamic characters, and high-stakes action.
  • Nero's vengeful plan to destroy Earth stemmed from Romulus' destruction, leading to Kirk and Spock's heroic battle against him.
  • Kirk's journey to becoming Captain of the USS Enterprise was marked by ambition, friendship, and the will to save Earth.

J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2009 movie didn't just end with the crew of the USS Enterprise saving the Earth, but it also breathed new life and energy into the dormant Star Trek franchise, setting up not just more feature films but also the new TV series on Paramount+. Set in the alternate Kelvin Timeline created by a Romulan time traveler named Nero (Eric Bana) , Star Trek is an origin story of how James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) became Captain of the USS Enterprise and forged his eternal friendship with Spock (Zachary Quinto).

The young crew of the Starship Enterprise was in a race against time to stop Nero in Star Trek 2009's final act. Nero stole Earth's defense codes from the captured Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) . The Romulans' starship, the Narada, reached Earth and lowered a drill to dig into the planetary core in San Francisco Bay near Starfleet Headquarters. From there, Nero would drop red matter to create a singularity that would swallow the planet into a black hole, just as the Romulans previously destroyed Spock's homeworld of Vulcan. The USS Enterprise's counterattacked by using the gravitational field of Saturn's moon, Titan, to hide the starship from the Narada's sensors. This allowed Kirk and Spock to beam aboard Nero's ship to rescue Pike and stop the Romulans' drill from destroying Earth .

J.J. Abrams' Star Trek relaunched the movie franchise and reintroduced audiences to Captain Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise.

Nero's Plan To Destroy The Federation Explained

Nero wanted to do to earth what he did to vulcan.

Nero's plan was, simply, vengeance in the form of intergalactic genocide. In 2387, which is 129 years before the present day of Star Trek 2009's main story, Nero was helpless to watch a supernova destroy his homeworld of Romulus. Nero was furious at Ambassador Spock (Leonard Nimoy) , who promised the Romulans he would stop the supernova, but the legendary Vulcan was too late to exact his plan to use red matter to create a black hole that would swallow the supernova before it eradicated Romulus.

Both Nero and Spock were pulled into the black hole's singularity, but they emerged at different points in Star Trek 's past. The Narada arrived in 2233 and its destruction of the USS Kelvin ended up creating an alternate reality from that point forward. Spock arrived in the Kelvin timeline 25 years later, in 2258. Nero immediately captured Spock and stranded him on Delta Vega, forcing him to watch as Nero destroyed Vulcan.

Star Trek: Picard season 1's backstory goes into more detail about the Federation's failure to stop the Romulan supernova.

Nero ultimately blamed the United Federation of Planets for doing "nothing" to save Romulus. Nero decided that he would use red matter to wipe out every Federation world, starting with Vulcan and Earth, in the 23rd century to ensure there would be no Federation in his 24th-century era . Nero even attacked a Klingon prison planet (possibly Rura Penthe) and wiped out a Klingon fleet with his advanced technology, because the Romulan also knew the Klingons and the Federation become allies in the 24th century,

How Kirk And Spock Stopped Nero

Only by working together could kirk and spock save earth.

James T. Kirk and Spock beamed onto the Narada to stop Nero's drill . Scotty (Simon Pegg) mistakenly transported them into a populated era of the Romulans' ship, so a shootout quickly ensured. But, through a mind-meld with one of the Romulans, Spock learned the location of the Jellyfish, Ambassador Spock's ship containing the red matter, while Kirk learned where Captain Pike was being held. The Starfleet heroes then split up. Spock piloted his elder self's ship into Earth's atmosphere and destroyed Nero's drill, saving the planet. Since the red matter was with Spock, Nero couldn't use it on the Terran homeworld. Meanwhile, Kirk got into a fistfight with Nero, but after he killed Nero's First Officer, Ayel (Clifton Collins, Jr.), he was also able to rescue the injured Captain Pike.

Incensed at Spock for destroying his drill, Nero's ship followed the Jellyfish as the Vulcan warped away, leading the Romulans from Earth. Spock's gamble was to exit warp near Saturn, which would allow the Enterprise to come to the rescue . That's exactly what happened as the Enterprise arrived like the cavalry and saved Spock from Nero's torpedoes. Kirk, Pike, and Spock beamed back aboard the Enterprise before Spock's ship crashed into the Narada, which released the red matter and created a black hole that would swallow the ship.

Kirk offered to beam Nero and his crew to safety (against Spock's wishes) but the Romulan preferred to "die in agony" rather than accept the Federation's help. Kirk's response? "You got it." And they let the singularity swallow the Romulans. However, another problem arose, and the Enterprise was trapped in the black hole's gravity well, preventing it from warping away. Kirk ordered Scotty to eject the warp core, hoping that the force of the detonation would push the Enterprise to safety. The gamble worked, and the Federation flagship was able to gain enough distance from the singularity and make it home to Earth.

Star Trek's Musical Captain's Chair And How Kirk Became Captain Of The Enterprise

The uss enterprise had three captains but one destiny..

Star Trek 2009's endgame was for Kirk to become Captain of the Enterprise - and earn the chair - but how it got there is bewildering. Pike is Captain of the Enterprise when the starship warped to Vulcan to answer its emergency distress call when Nero attacked the planet. After Nero "invited" Pike aboard the Narada, Pike promoted Spock to Acting Captain and Kirk (who wasn't supposed to be on the Enterprise, to begin with) to First Officer. Spock then had Kirk thrown off the ship for mutiny and marooned him on Delta Vega. Kirk returned to the Enterprise with Scotty thanks to Ambassador Spock showing the engineer the equation for transwarp beaming. Kirk was then able to show that Spock was "emotionally compromised" because of his trauma from Vulcan's destruction, and Jim assumed command as Acting Captain.

In Star Trek , saving Earth is the key to getting what you want, especially if your name is James T. Kirk.

Because Kirk led the Enterprise to successfully save Earth from Nero, Starfleet Command rewarded him with a promotion to Captain. Yes, Kirk jumped rank from Cadet to Captain in the course of the film. Kirk then relieved the injured and wheelchair-bound Captain Pike of command of the USS Enterprise. It may seem like an insane turn of events, but there is Star Trek movie precedent for Kirk's reward . When Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) saved Earth from the Whale Probe in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , Starfleet dropped all charges against him and demoted him to Captain, giving him command of the USS Enterprise-A. In Star Trek , saving Earth is the key to getting what you want, especially if your name is James T. Kirk.

Star Trek 2009 Positioned The Enterprise Crew In Their Classic Roles

The crew of the uss enterprise perfectly assembled.

Star Trek 2009 was ingenious in how every main Enterprise crew member got positioned into their classic roles despite being Starfleet Cadets . Hikaru Sulu (John Cho) became helmsman by replacing the previous pilot, who was ill. 17-year-old Pavel Chekov (Anton Yelchin) was also on the bridge at Operations as the ship's navigator. Dr. Leonard McCoy (Karl Urban) was assigned as one of the Enterprise's senior medical officers, but he became Chief Medical Officer after the previous doctor died during Nero's attack. McCoy also used his clout to sneak Kirk aboard the Enterprise despite his academic suspension.

Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana) used her romantic relationship with Spock to get reassigned to the Enterprise from the USS Farragut. Captain Pike then made Uhura Communications Officer because of her superior ability to understand Romulan and Klingon. Finally, Scotty worked as the transporter chief during the Enterprise's final assault on Nero, and Kirk promoted him to Chief Engineer after he became Captain.

Ambassador Spock's Role In Star Trek 2009 Explained

Leonard nimoy's spock gave star trek 2009 credibility.

Leonard Nimoy's presence in Star Trek 2009 gave J.J. Abrams' reboot legitimacy in the eyes of longtime Trekkers, but Ambassador Spock (billed as Spock Prime in the film) was also crucial to the story. Spock is the key link between Star Trek 's Prime Timeline and Abrams' Kelvin alternate reality, but because the legendary Vulcan jumped to the Kelvin Universe and was ultimately stranded there, it was an assurance that Star Trek 2009 "really happened." Ambassador Spock's role was ostensibly to give Kirk (and the audience) the backstory of where Nero came from and how he time traveled to the 23rd century, but the Vulcan's far more vital role was to help the young Kirk along on his journey to becoming Captain of the Enterprise.

Meeting Ambassador Spock was the impetus Kirk needed to become the Captain he is destined to be.

Thanks to Ambassador Spock, Kirk realized that he needed to work with the younger Spock in order to stop Nero. K irk believed the old Vulcan that he and Spock are destined to be friends and that they can achieve great things together. Meeting Ambassador Spock was the impetus Kirk needed to become the Captain he is destined to be. As for the two Spocks, the Prime Vulcan initially didn't want to meet his younger self, but he decided they "couldn't ignore each other" when less than 10,000 Vulcans remained in the universe. Ambassador Spock also urged Commander Spock to remain in Starfleet since they can now be "in two places at once." The two Spocks meeting gets a payoff in Star Trek Into Darkness when the younger Vulcan turns to his senior counterpart for information on how to defeat Khan Noonien Singh (Benedict Cumberbatch).

How Star Trek 2009 Set Up J.J. Abrams' Trilogy (And The Star Trek TV Shows To Come)

Star trek 2009 co-writer alex kurtzman now oversees star trek on paramount+.

Star Trek 2009 ended with Captain Kirk and his crew in place aboard the Starship Enterprise, ready to explore the final frontier in sequels. Beyond setting up 2012's Star Trek Into Darkness , and a third movie directed by Justin Lin, 2016's Star Trek Beyond , J.J. Abrams' 2009 film was ultimately the rebirth of the Star Trek franchise. Four years had passed since Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled and there would not be a new Star Trek series on television until Star Trek: Discovery in 2017. During those 12 years, Abrams' Star Trek trilogy kept the franchise alive, created new fans, and became the basis for the next wave of Star Trek TV shows.

J.J. Abrams' Star Trek films were a necessary and long-needed upgrade of Star Trek 's visual effects, production values, and a shift in tone and storytelling styles. Star Trek 2009 was the template that Star Trek: Discovery , Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds followed, with all three live-action series on Paramount+ boasting blockbuster movie-quality production values and visuals. Star Trek 2009's breakneck style and giddy sense of fun and adventure are also evident in the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy .

Star Trek 4 Is In Development At Paramount

Will chris pine's uss enterprise warp back into movie theaters.

Star Trek 4 has been mired in development hell since 2016. Filmmakers like S.J. Clarkson, Matt Shakman, and Quentin Tarantino developed the next Star Trek movie for producer J.J. Abrams' but all left due to creative differences. However, Paramount Pictures is reportedly prioritizing Star Trek , and a new screenwriter, Steve Yockey, is writing Star Trek 4 , which is billed as "the final chapter" of the USS Enterprise crew led by Chris Pine's Captain James T. Kirk. Although no director has been named, an ideal scenario would be Star Trek 4 arriving in theaters to celebrate Star Trek 's 60th anniversary in 2026 .

However, there are two new Star Trek movies releasing soon . Star Trek: Section 31 , starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh, has completed filming and will be the first Star Trek movie made for streaming on Paramount+. On the theatrical side, Paramount Pictures has confirmed an Untitled Star Trek Origin Movie set "decades before" Star Trek 2009 to premiere in 2025, with Toby Haynes ( Star Wars: Andor ) directing. Whether or not a Star Trek 4 ever reunites Chris Pine and the USS Enterprise cast, Star Trek 2009 is the benchmark that the current golden age of Star Trek on Paramount+ is built upon, and J..J. Abrams' first Star Trek movie remains a thrilling, spectacular space adventure that holds up to repeat viewings.

Star Trek 2009 is streaming on Paramount+
