SPILL NEWS: VANS WARPED TOUR REVEALS 2018 LINEUP

Vans Warped Tour 2018

VANS WARPED TOUR REVEALS 2018 LINEUP

Final full cross-country tour.

The entire lineup for 2018’s Vans Warped Tour, presented by Journeys, has been revealed today via a special announcement video, which can be viewed now at VansWarpedTour.com .

It was previously shared that this would be the final cross-country run for the tour, now in its 24th year. On the upcoming shows, founder Kevin Lyman has shared: “ I truly am happy to get the chance to travel around the country one more time to thank you for your support, and bring you another best day ever .”

For its final run, the tour is thrilled to welcome back countless bands who have rocked Vans Warped Tour over the last 24 years including Reel Big Fish, Simple Plan, All Time Low, Four Year Strong, 3OH!3, Less Than Jake, Underoath, We The Kings, The Used, Tonight Alive and more. Adding to this year’s lineup are up-and-coming acts such as State Champs, Trash Boat, Don Broco, Grayscale, Waterparks, Real Friends, and Movements.

Also returning this summer are the newly named Mutant Red Dawn and Mutant White Lightning stages, showcasing the best in heavy and hardcore music: Chelsea Grin, MYCHILDREN MY BRIDE, Every Time I Die, Knocked Loose, The Amity Affliction, Ice Nine Kills, etc.

The Vans Warped Tour is the largest traveling music festival in the United States, and the longest-running touring music festival in North America. Originally conceived by founder Kevin Lyman in 1995 as an eclectic alternative rock festival, with a focus on punk rock, over the years the tour has grown to include a multitude of genres, including metal, hip hop, reggae, pop and more. It remains one of the best tours to attend to discover emerging acts, to learn more about wonderful non-profits and companies who are working to make a positive impact on the world that surround them, and to meet like-minded friends.

Over the past two decades, Vans Warped Tour has built a legacy as the must attend summer festival for rock and music lovers alike. Since its start in 1995 it has provided a platform for established as well as up-and-coming artists, with past performers including blink182, No Doubt, Sublime, Beck, Katy Perry, NOFX, Limp Bizkit, Black Eyed Peas, Green Day, Eminem, Yellowcard, Bad Religion, and countless others.

In addition, the tour continues to host a wide array of amazing non-profits and educational workshops for attendees and 2018 will be launching the FEND Movement (Full Energy, No Drugs) in partnership with thePreventum Initiative. The FEND Movement empowers youth to make a stand against opioids. The FEND Movement aims to engage 50,000 young people between March and August 2018, giving them the chance to earn rewards and prizes as they increase their knowledge and change their attitudes and behaviors in relation to opioids. Youth can participate by downloading the Preventum app and on-boarding to the FEND campaign.

A Voice For The Innocent, American Red Cross, Hope For The Day, Feed Our Children Now!, Living The Dream Foundation, To Write Love on Her Arms, and truth will all be involved this summer, just to name a few. Fans can see their favorite bands as well as become educated on these causes and how they can help.

“ I am very excited about the upcoming year. With it being the last tour, the non-profit presence will be as big as ever. Groups who have been out in the past will be coming out in more markets, and hopefully we will attract new non-profits ,” comments Sierra Lyman. “ With more non-profits coming out there will be more options for our audience to hopefully get involved before, during, and after the tour. I am hoping that this last year encourages non-profits to partner with bands and for bands to partner with non-profits on their own events and tours once this summer is over .”

The Entertainment Institute will return to the 2018 tour as well, hosting educational workshops and Q+A’s hosted by the industry’s most successful writers, artists, and photographers. More information regarding the artists conducting workshops will be available in April at http://www.thinktei.com

Also joining the tour this year as sponsors are dailyKARMA, Ernie Ball, Equal Vision Records, Full Sail University, Peta2, MusiCares, PRS Guitars, Hopeless Records, Viceland, Violent Gentlemen, Hope For The Day, and more.

“ Kevin and the tour have touched so many lives through their commitment to giving back to the community ,” shares dailyKARMA CEO Patricia Dao. “ They’ve been doing it long before it was the cool thing to do.  Our team is thrilled that dailyKARMA will be powering Warped Tour’s online fundraising efforts this year. ”

Early Bird Tickets, as well as Super Fan Bundles, for this year’s tour on are sale now and can be purchased at www.vanswarpedtour.com . As a bonus for early ticket buyers, the first 500 tickets sold for each show will be at the lowest price available and will include a digital download of the Official Vans Warped Tour 50-song compilation. The cover was revealed earlier today, and features Tonight Alive’s Jenna McDougall.

General admission tickets will be available starting Thursday, March 8th.

The 38-date tour will commence June 21st in Pomona, CA and end on August 5th in West Palm, FL.

R.I.P. Warped Tour. At Least We Still Have Vans.

The skater company says goodbye to the music festival that made it cool.

warped tour san diego 2018

By Medea Giordano

The Vans Warped Tour — the music festival that has crossed the country each year since 1995, and is frequently called a “punk rock summer camp” — is on its last run.

For 24 years, the Warped Tour created spaces for metal, punk and ska fans to meet their idols and mosh together under the hot sun: Each summer, about 70 bands and artists would play in some 40 locations, welcoming hundreds of thousands of tattooed concertgoers clad in band tees and Vans checkered slip-ons. Many musical acts that helped define the late 1990s and early 2000s graced Warped Tour’s stages, including Blink-182, Reel Big Fish and Eminem .

But recently, the show’s popularity has declined, among both bands and attendees. Some music festivals are bigger than ever — Coachella drew more than 200,000 people to the California desert for two days in April — but the Warped Tour doesn’t have the same cultural cache it once had.

“The die-hard Warped fan was still coming, but the ones for the future seemed to drop off,” said the festival’s founder and longtime producer Kevin Lyman in an email.

He said there is the possibility for other Warped Tour events down the line — including for the 25th anniversary next summer — but 2018 will be the final cross-country blowout. “I’ve done everything I can in this format,” he said. “I’m just tired. It’s time for someone else to continue or start something new.”

The final tour not only marks the end of an era in music, but of a particularly intimate brand collaboration. Vans has sponsored the Warped Tour since its second year and credits the festival with burnishing its countercultural image.

“Until we got involved with the Warped Tour, we didn’t have a national footprint to talk about who we are,” said Doug Palladini, the skate apparel company’s global brand president. “Vans is a brand that really embraces individuality, and Warped Tour is very much the same.”

Vans representatives said that the Warped Tour — which the company has a 75 percent stake in — isn’t ending because of a decline in ticket sales, and that its retirement shouldn’t be seen as divestment in music or skater culture. House of Vans, an indoor skate park and music venue with locations in Brooklyn, Chicago and London, and pop-ups around the world, will continue to host famous musicians and local, unsigned performers, and admission is free.

But the collaboration between Vans and the Warped Tour has run its course.

“We’re going to make this a part of Vans history and always hold it up as a really, really important part of who we are,” Mr. Palladini said. “It’s just the right time to put a bow on it and say thank you to all the bands and all the fans that made Warped Tour was it is.”

“One Big Family”

Vans was already synonymous with southern California skateboard culture in the 1990s when the Warped Tour started, thanks to the sneakers’ sticky soles. (They have good grip.) But the tour’s national popularity helped establish Vans as a punk brand, and that image has made the company incredibly appealing, especially to shoppers ages 16 to 34 .

In 2004, when Vans was acquired by VF Corporation — which owns JanSport, Timberland and the North Face — it was making about $325 million in sales a year. This year, Mr. Palladini said, Vans is on track to surpass $3 billion.

The first Vans store, which was known at the time as the Van Doren Rubber Company and opened its doors in Anaheim, Calif., in March 1966, was a much humbler affair. It was founded by Paul and Jim Van Doren, brothers who would take custom orders and manufacture shoes on site. Eventually the shoes’ waffle soles attracted skateboarders, and in 1976, Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta — pro-skaters who were immortalized by Victor Rasuk and John Robinson in the 2005 film “Lords of Dogtown” — designed the Era , a low-top sneaker that became a Vans classic.

There were other moments in which Vans shoes were in the countercultural spotlight, including a 1982 cameo courtesy of Sean Penn’s Jeff Spicoli character in the movie “Fast Times at Ridgemont High .” But the company’s punk identity wasn’t forged until Mr. Lyman met Steve Van Doren.

A former Lollapalooza stage manager, Mr. Lyman had put together the first Warped Tour in 1995, with bands like Sublime and No Doubt on the original lineup. But he needed financial support to keep it going and was seeking sponsorship.

Steve Van Doren, the son of the Vans co-founder Paul Van Doren, was on a different mission. Separately, he was searching for someone to help him plan an amateur skate contest that would tour across the U.S. and the world. He met with Mr. Lyman, who said Vans would draw more people to skate events if live music were on the lineup.

In “Vans: Off the Wall,” a book about the company, Mr. Van Doren said that a deal was forged between the two men within 15 minutes of their meeting. Thus, the Vans Warped Tour was born.

“ Steve Van Doren. He always got it and was the driving force early in this relationship,” Mr. Lyman said. “After our first year with Vans, Airwalk approached me and offered a bunch of money to leave and go with them. I said hell no, and it was all because of Steve. Steve Van Doren continues to be the soul of Vans in my mind.”

“The Vans Warped Tour is one big family,” Mr. Van Doren said in an interview. He recalled his first summer, in which he drove from stop to stop on the tour in a van with his daughter. Though he opted to take the relatively cushy bus after that, he said he went to every Warped Tour show for 15 years.

The People’s Music Festival

Today’s popular music festivals often charge a steep price for big-name performers. A three-day general admission pass to Coachella, for example, can run $500, or close to $1,000 for a V.I.P. ticket. The Warped Tour, by comparison, costs about $45, and there is no hierarchy to the ticketing system. Even the bigger bands are never given special treatment, Mr. Van Doren said. The whole point is accessibility: There are no extra fees to meet artists, and fans can visit bands at their tents or run into them in the crowd during another performance.

“When you monetize a handshake, it changes the whole relationship,” Mr. Lyman said.

The Warped founder guessed that, of all the tour’s performers, Andrew W.K. probably spent the most time with fans. He would “sign for six hours and then go outside and sign some more. I would have to ask him to move since we needed to load the trucks to get to the next city,” Mr. Lyman said.

“Warped is a festival for the music and for the organizations that travel with it,” said Victoria Hudgins, a 23-year-old Warped Tour fan who has attended twice before. “I feel as though the younger crowd these days are more interested in putting their picture from Coachella on Instagram than they are actually going to and enjoying the festival itself. You don’t go to Warped for an Instagram picture, you go to Warped to be a part of something so big and so crazy.”

Ms. Hudgins had planned to buy tickets for two stops on the Warped Tour this summer — one in her home state of Michigan and the tour’s final show in Florida — before she got the opportunity to work on the tour full-time. (She is working for Support Tattoos and Piercings at Work, which sets up a tent at each city the tour visits, after volunteering for the organization last year.)

“To me this is going to be a summer where I feel like I’m going to fit in everywhere I am,” she said. “This is going to be a summer meeting an entire country of people. I can be a part of something so much bigger than just myself.”

Loyalty, Loyalty, Loyalty

While the Warped Tour has declined in popularity, Vans has become a global phenomenon. Between 2010 and 2014, it saw double-digit growth every year, and in 2017, the company surpassed the North Face as the VF Corporation’s top-selling brand. The shoes are just as visible in high fashion as they are in the skate park, and they have gotten musical shout-outs from young artists like Travis Mills and Ty Dolla $ign . (In 2011, the actress Kristen Stewart literally cemented the shoes into pop culture history when she wore a pair to her Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony .)

“All of a sudden, everywhere I looked, it was Vans,” said Samantha Brown , a stylist and video director who has worked with Nylon magazine, Marc Jacobs and Oscar de la Renta. “They kind of make everything look cooler.”

But just as the Warped Tour kept its ticket prices down out of loyalty to its fan base — and even let parents in for free — Vans has no plans to charge more for their increasingly popular apparel. (Shoes run from about $60 to $100.) The company’s prevailing wisdom, Mr. Palladini said, is around inclusivity. “And a part of inclusivity is accessible price points.”

For Steve Van Doren, who is now the vice president of events and promotions, it’s important that the company not forget its roots. “Skaters in the mid ’70s adopted us, and I thank them still four decades later because they gave us meaning,” he said. “They gave us purpose.”

In addition, the tour continues to host a wide array of amazing non-profits and educational workshops for attendees and 2018 will be launching the FEND Movement (Full Energy, No Drugs) in partnership with the Preventum Initiative.

“I am very excited about the upcoming year. With it being the last tour, the non-profit presence will be as big as ever. Groups who have been out in the past will be coming out in more markets, and hopefully we will attract new non-profits,” comments Sierra Lyman. “With more non-profits coming out there will be more options for our audience to hopefully get involved before, during, and after the tour. I am hoping that this last year encourages non-profits to partner with bands and for bands to partner with non-profits on their own events and tours once this summer is over.”

The 38-date tour will commence June 21st in Pomona, CA and end on August 5th in West Palm, FL.

Vans Warped Tour Announces Final Lineup

The 2018 vans warped tour, which rolls through san diego on june 22, has announced its last lineup, by dustin lothspeich • published march 2, 2018 • updated on march 8, 2018 at 1:44 pm.

They say it's better to go out with a bang rather than a whimper, and to be honest, we're not really sure where the final Vans Warped Tour lineup lands on that.

As we reported last  November, the cross-country touring music festival -- which has catered largely to punk, hardcore, emo, ska and metalcore genres since 1995 -- is calling it quits after this year's summer run.

On March 1, the 2018 Vans Warped Tour announced its final lineup, and it's a curious one: Reel Big Fish, 3OH!3, Taking Back Sunday, Less Than Jake, Underoath, the Used, Frank Turner, Sum 41, Mayday Parade, Black Veil Brides, Asking Alexandria, Silverstein and more help fill out this year's performers.

Of course, there will be different headliners depending on which leg of the tour you end up seeing. San Diego, which is the tour's second stop (on June 22 in the SDCCU Stadium parking lot), will feature 3OH!3, Knuckle Puck, Mayday Parade, Reel Big Fish, State Champs, All Time Low, Four Year Strong, Issues, Movements, Real Friends, Simple Plan, the Maine, the Used, We the Kings, Wage War, Every Time I Die and more.

For a full list of acts and more information, visit the official Vans Warped Tour website. Tickets for the 38-date summer tour are on sale now; get general admission tickets for the June 22 San Diego show at this link .

Of course, we're stuck wondering where some of punk's most obvious bands are: Were icons like Bad Religion, Adolescents, Descendents, Rancid, NOFX, Pennywise, Lagwagon, and the Offspring too busy to join up? I suppose we'll never know. Heck, what about Green Day or Blink-182? While they might be too big now to play Warped, they might've done it just for nostalgia's sake.

Last year, festival founder Kevin Lyman announced that he was officially bringing the world's largest traveling tour to an end.

“I have been a very lucky person to have traveled across the country and sometimes around the world as one of the founders and producers of the Vans Warped Tour," he said. "Today, with many mixed feelings, I am here to announce that next year will be the final, full cross-country run of the Vans Warped Tour."

To date, the tour has booked more than 1,700 acts including No Doubt, Pennywise, NOFX, Bad Religion, Blink-182, Jimmy Eat World, Fall Out Boy, Katy Perry, Green Day, Pierce the Veil, Paramore, Eminem, and Ice-T -- and it's also become known for its community outreach by partnering with more than 90 nonprofit organizations that set up camp at each tour date.

In his 2017 statement, Lyman said that while the 2018 fest will be its last full run, there may be plans for a special celebration next year. Will we see a Warped Tour: The Reunion Years? Stay tuned.

Warped Tour Announces Final Cross-Country Run in 2018

In some sad news for summer music festivals, The Vans Warped Tour has announced that 2018 will be the final year of its cross country incarnation. It will mark the tour's 24th incarnation since beginning in 1995. No lineup has been announced as of yet, but tour dates for the final stretch have been revealed.

In an interview with Billboard , tour founder Kevin Lyman spoke a little bit about what led to the decision to make 2018 the last year. "We were doing fine, but we had a pretty big dip last year. It was that younger end of the demo. It was an interesting tour -- the bands didn’t feel the dip because the fans that were there were super engaged… Everyone’s lining up at 11 o’clock and they don’t want to miss a band. So that [younger] demo changed, but then I talked to people after the tour and bands did great on merchandise, they had great crowds -- everyone had good crowds in front of the stage. But that casual fan that’s learning how to go to a music festival -- they were not there last summer," explained Lyman. "It was a really great show, sponsors were happy, but our attendance was down. "

He stayed positive, ending it saying, "I'm looking to bring everyone a great show and have a great summer and connect with a lot of people, you know? For me, the saddest thing is I'll be seeing sunrises and sunsets for the last time in a lot of those parking lots."

Lyman also hints at there being more in store for Vans Warped Tour as a whole however, writing in a statement , "The enduring spirit of the Vans Warped Tour remains as bright as ever, continuing to inspire creativity and ambition in new and exciting ways as we prepare for a 25th anniversary celebration in 2019. I truly look forward to seeing as many of you as possible during this final cross country run, and getting to thank you for your support on this wild adventure. Until then, take care and be safe."

Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman announced the end of the 24-year-running festival earlier this year, citing changes in the festival industry, declining ticket sales, and a "shrinking pool of bands" as factors responsible for its demise. He portended an end to touring festivals at a Q&A at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Ohio earlier this month, reports Cleveland.com . "Warped Tour will probably be the last touring festival, to be honest," he reportedly told the crowd. "I hope I'm wrong, but I really think it's going to be the last one."

This past summer, Revolver spent a couple days with Gwar at the Vans Warped Tour's San Diego and Pomona, California, stops to chronicle the (very NSFW) madness, from bloody showers to presidential assassinations in effigy. Watch below.

Over the past two decades, Vans Warped Tour has built a legacy as the must-attend summer festival for rock and music lovers alike.

"I am very excited about the upcoming year. With it being the last tour, the non-profit presence will be as big as ever. Groups who have been out in the past will be coming out in more markets, and hopefully we will attract new non-profits," comments Sierra Lyman. "With more non-profits coming out there will be more options for our audience to hopefully get involved before, during, and after the tour. I am hoping that this last year encourages non-profits to partner with bands and for bands to partner with non-profits on their own events and tours once this summer is over."

The Entertainment Institute will return to the 2018 tour as well, hosting educational workshops and Q+A's hosted by the industry's most successful writers, artists and photographers. More information regarding the artists conducting workshops will be available in April at thinktei.com

Early Bird Tickets, as well as Super Fan Bundles, for this year's tour on are sale now and can be purchased at vanswarpedtour.com. As a bonus for early ticket buyers, the first 500 tickets sold for each show will be at the lowest price available and will include a digital download of the Official Vans Warped Tour 50-song compilation. The cover was revealed earlier today, and features Tonight Alive's Jenna McDougall.

General admission tickets will be available starting Thursday, March 8.

Please excuse the length of this review (probably my longest) but describing services for a parent when time comes to transition to a care facility IS a little more personal and life-impacting than opinions of gyms, car washes, bars & restaurants, etc. If readers short on time, here's the KEY point: The care my mom's received by the St Paul's VILLA (SPV) team has exceeded all my mother's (and my) expectations. Make it one of the first you consider for a loved one. So if you do have some time, after a year now since mom's transitioned here she's thrived more than I could have imagined as she turns 92 this spring. I live out of the US about 8 months of the year and cannot express my gratitude to the SPV staff for the incredibly personal care I see them giving to mom and other residents. I think my perspective could be a bit more detailed than most, as when I'm in town I typically visit mom for lunch 5 days per week. After sitting with her in the dining room (where I see the food and hear her opinions of it) we go to the ballroom and play board games over coffee for another 90 minutes or so. The following observations are detailed by function as best I can and reflect my "Fly on the Wall" perspective watching life go by at "The Villa." ADMINISTRATION: From the initial tour from TERRI, to the nursing site visit by RHONDA & TAMMY, to PEGGY at reception desk passing messages to mom, to JUANA handling the transport van services..... all these folks made transitioning into SPV life so efficient, organized and calm !! After onboarding, Rhonda has been wonderful on monthly billing, autopay bank links and most important fighting our Long Term Care insurance company to start and maintain benefit payments. Whew !! NURSING: Obviously a major concern by relatives, I know mom's providers now after dealing with several health issues and they simply amazed me with all the legwork they do monitoring residents continuously and when necessary assessing symptoms and then contacting medical providers. As they did getting mom through COVID which I SO appreciated when I was out of the country !! Medications are handled via SPV's pharmacy service so well also. **KUDOS to HALEH, TAMMY and all the assistants. ** I recall Haleh's first interaction when mom arrived in a wheelchair (which she rarely left at her previous boarding care-type rooming home; as it was easier for that staff to have her "parked"....their warped version of fall prevention): She said "I am so happy you're here and to be helping you....BUT I won't have time to push you down to meals and activities all day so we expect you to manage a walker again !!" And this worked ! She's been motoring around independently now for over a year...something I NEVER thought possible. DINING SERVICES: Like my memories from the Navy, food is the major morale buster if not good. Collectively our family members have joined mom for probably over 130 meals....and I can say she's never refused to eat / say the taste bad, etc. I sometimes finish what she can't and also can vouch for the freshness, taste, temperature, texture and presentation by the KITCHEN staff. There are also special meals for Thanksgiving, Easter, Mother's day, Holidays, etc. The servers have won a special place for us, with shout-outs to: PALOMA / CHARLOTTE / ALBERTO / REYNAULDO and SUSAN. It's impressive to hear them rattling off preferences of diners around us from memory. ACTIVITIES: Another facet that blew me away is the daily offering of social activities. --Typically there are daily exercise, arts & crafts, lectures on history or current events, musical performances (Country, children's choirs, pianist, violinist, sing alongs...and my fav of a real Mariachi group from TJ for Cinco de Mayo). --There's also a movie each day around 5 pm. --On Friday there's a happy hour with appetizers & music. --Several times a year residents mount a live play *ADAM is THE MAN here.....I've watched him literally finish one activity then begin getting the next one ready* --JUANA handles weekly van trips to eat out at local restaurants or go to stores (Walmart, Target, etc.) --On Sundays HECTOR mounts his sundries store--- where $1 still buys shampoo, toiletries, laundry/hand soap, toothpaste, etc. So in summary I hope I've done the great environment at St Paul's Villa justice by relating our family's VERY satisfactory experience. My intent is to aid other Yelpers for this important moment in life. Five ***** from us ! God Bless everyone in this dedicated organization for the good they do !

Hello Brenda! Thank you for taking the time to write about our amazing staff and the care we provide. We are happy your family chose the Villa!

Photo of Mary S.

My mom has been at The Villa for a few years, having moved there from St. Paul's Manor when she could no longer live without some extra help. (See my previous St. Paul's Manor review under St. Paul's Senior Services) The staff at The Villa continue to impress me with their patience, understanding and care as they assist residents who have a wide range of needs and lots of different personalities! During this COVID pandemic, they have really been dedicated to keeping everyone safe, comfortable, and as entertained as possible under the circumstances. They usually have a wide range of daily activities, but have had to scale back - so they'll sing in the hallway, have a fruit cart or ice cream "truck" go down the hall in the afternoon giving everyone a treat, etc. When possible, they hold classes for small groups. They're being very creative while maintaining a healthy environment. When my mom moved to The Villa, she was delighted to see many of her former Manor friends already there. And she is pleased when old Manor friends suddenly show up as new Villa residents. That says a lot about St. Paul's as an organization - that residents want to stay a part of it. And if you're considering moving in or having a family member move in, I highly recommend them as truly caring staff doing a difficult job with smiles on their faces.

Aug 21, 2020

Hi Mary, thank you so much for your review. As you know, we love our residents and enjoy coming up with fun ways to keep them entertained. We are proud to be keeping everyone safe and happy during this pandemic! Your mom is in great hands with us!

Sorely disappointed in St. Paul's Villa. My husbands aunt has been here for several years and this place has gone downhill dramatically! 1st floor dementia patients have absolutely no activities, no outings, NOTHING to stimulate them or give them a reason to come out of their rooms. Several meals have been skipped or staff does not bother to make sure loved one is fed. They do not keep track of how much the elderly are eating which also amazes me! SCABIES scariest scabies ran through this place for 1.5 years. Our loved one was covered in scabies for 6 months on and off! You may wonder why we are still there but finances are a major consideration. We are paying very close attention and really hope this place turns around!

Nov 19, 2018

Hello, Brenda. Obviously, we were concerned to read your perspective of operations at the Villa. We will continue to work with your family even though several requests violate state regulations which are in place for the care and protection of your family member. For example, we have a robust activity program however by law we must abide by state regulations for resident rights and respect their refusal to participate. Similar goes for our meal program. We will review this posting with you and accurately explain each point. We certainly hope that as a result, you might amend your Yelp comments which are not reflective of the loving care and high standards we are known for. Thank you.

My Mom has been living at St. Paul's Villa since August 2020. Cecilia Aguilar Rodriguez is an exemplary employee. She is kind, caring and compassionate with my Mom. And above all very patient. Terri and Rhonda, in administration, are always prompt answering any questions and addressing any concerns we might have. I would recommend visiting this community as well.

Hi Rickey! WOW, thank you for taking the time to write this review about out staff. We will be sure to recognize these employees for their dedication to providing excellent care for your mom!

My 107-yr old mother has been at St Paul's Villa for four and a half years. She and I both give a large round of applause and many thanks for the great caring and personal traits of all the nurses and CNAS, and especially to the wonderful Lilliana Sanchez who has treated my mother with respect, dignity, and gives Mom a lot of happiness and laughter through her days when Lilliana is on duty.

Dec 8, 2021

Hi Gail! Thank you so much for your very kind words about our care staff at St. Paul's Villa! Your grandmother is such a joy to care for and we are so happy your family chose the Villa.

Photo of Karen B.

My mother has been living in the Memory Care unit for three years now and we just couldn't be happier. There have been ups and downs, which go with the undeniable anguish of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's, and the staff at St. Paul's Villa have treated my mom as they would their own family member. The facility just had a reconstruction and the carpets were removed, which is a good thing, and replaced with hardwood (and keeps unpleasant odors that are endemic with care for many people with incontinence to a minimum). My mom's room is large and her caregivers keep it very clean and organized. The only reason I didn't give the review FIVE stars is because my mom is very mobile and likes to walk a lot. I wish they had a secure area in the open air where she could walk and breathe in fresh air, so that's my only complaint. Would I suggest St Paul's Villa? Absolutely!

Feb 20, 2020

Dear Karen, thank you for the lovely review. We love caring for your Mom. We do host regular nature walks, which I know your Mom enjoys, and we do have patio spaces for her to relax in. But we agree, it would be nice to have more outdoor space!

Photo of James G.

Do not place your loved ones here. They did not allow my mother because Greek is her primary language and they claimed after a fifteen minute interview my mother can't live there because of the language barrier. Blatant discrimination! They claim to be a memory care facility. How do they communicate with people who can't speak and have advanced Alzheimer disease!

Aug 4, 2019

Hi James I am so sorry you are frustrated, we completely understand. Unfortunately our County regulators have spoken with us several times about the necessity of providing 24/7 communications with all residents at all levels of need. We are seeking creative ways to address this. I am so sorry we could not make the Villa your Mom’s home.

We recently toured St Paul's Villa and I was absolutely delighted by the staff and our experience there. Terri made us feel so welcome. She answered all of our questions and I truly felt that my Grandmother's well being was her number one priority. I would highly recommend visiting this community.

Review: North Coast Rep’s ‘Sense of Decency’ a dark, well-acted psycho-thriller

Brendan Ford, left, and Frank Corrado in "Sense of Decency" at North Coast Repertory Theatre.

In several scenes of Jake Broder’s fact-based play “Sense of Decency,” Army psychiatrist Douglas M. Kelley uses old-fashioned magic tricks to impress and outsmart the men he meets, including imprisoned Nazi leader Hermann Göring.

But it doesn’t take long for the manipulative Göring — who’s awaiting justice at the Nuremberg Trials in post-WWII Germany — to outwit Kelley and prove he’s the master of deception in the 90-minute psycho-thriller that made its world premiere Saturday at North Coast Repertory Theatre. Inspired by journalist Jack El-Hai’s 2013 book “The Nazi and the Psychiatrist,” the play examines the unlikely bond that formed between these two attention-craving men, whose affluent but unhappy childhoods, intelligence, addictions and final acts bore striking similarities.

Co-directed by North Coast Rep artistic director David Ellenstein and Broder, the play has a fascinating backstory, strong performances and frightening relevance to America’s contemporary political and social media landscape.

Kelley was one of the Army doctors assigned to assess the Nazi prisoners’ mental fitness for trial in 1946. From the start, the ambitious Kelley planned to turn his interviews into a profitable book based on his theory that an undiagnosed Nazi “pathogen” turned regular law-abiding men into psychotic monsters capable of genocide. Instead, he discovered the only “virus” infecting their minds was state-sponsored propaganda, prejudice and, in the case of Göring, ruthless opportunism — something America had already perfected with its race and immigration policies in the early 20th century.

Leading the cast as Kelley is Brendan Ford, who takes his character on an impressive arc from mild-mannered, high-minded and empathetic to paranoid, cruel and narcissistic. Frank Corrado is a cast standout with his sly, still and eerily understated performance as Göring. And Lucy Davenport sympathetically portrays both men’s very different wives: Dukie Kelley and Emmy Göring.

Brendan Ford, left, and Lucy Davenport in "Sense of Decency" at North Coast Repertory Theatre.

Marty Burnett’s filthy prison cell scenic design, complemented by Matt Novotny’s haunting lighting and Steven Leffue’s pulsing sound design, gradually takes on a warped, nightmarish quality as Kelley’s mental health declines. Elisa Benzoni designed the period costumes and Matt FitzGerald designed projections.

The play’s script could still use some polishing and focus. In an attempt to cover too much historic and biographical ground, there are seemingly dozens of short scenes, some just a few lines long, so script feels unnecessarily choppy. The opening “magic show” scene serves as a bookend to the finale, gets it gets the play off to a slow start. And the tone of the piece, with unsettling and awkward humor and an unnecessary death scene, wobbles at times.

Perhaps to aid in plot exposition, the first act is filled with brief conversations between Kelley and his wife about his interviews with Göring. Some of these scenes feel unnatural, particularly when Dukie describes in detail how her husband should buck the system to get what he wants. Perhaps this really happened, but his character seems easily intellectually outmatched for a man with a doctorate from Columbia University.

Kelley’s story was largely forgotten until El-Hai’s book — soon to be a major motion picture — came out. The timing of the thought-provoking “Sense of Decency” couldn’t be better, with antisemitism and White supremacy spiraling worldwide, and Donald Trump — who recently used one of Hitler’s key phrases about immigrants “poisoning the blood” of America — set to run for a second presidential term.
