Reading list not syncing between iPhone, iPad, and Mac? Fixes

Mahit

Internet is the epicenter of everything interesting. There are times when we save things to access or read later. The Reading List on Safari is helpful in this regard. You can access bookmarks across all Apple devices. However, sometimes iCloud bookmarks stop syncing. This prevents you from accessing saved bookmarks.

Additionally, you can’t recover an accidentally deleted bookmark. Before you start worrying, there’re plenty of solutions that will help fix the Reading List not syncing issue. I have added all the fixes that worked for me. Read on!

Why is Reading List not syncing on iPhone, iPad, and Mac?

There could be several reasons why Reading List is not syncing across your Apple devices. The primary one could be that it stops syncing if there is an issue with your iCloud account. In some cases, maybe iCloud is not enabled for Safari. Even connectivity issues could stop it from syncing.

It is annoying when you can’t access bookmarks across devices. The troubleshooting steps mentioned in the article should help fix the syncing issue. But before you begin, you need to check a few things.

Getting started

  • Check the date and time setting and correct it if required.
  • iCloud outage : The sync feature doesn’t work during the iCloud outage. Check the System Status page to see if it is a widespread issue. Typically iCloud outages don’t last for long. Wait for some time and check if Reading List is syncing.
  • Ensure a strong internet connection .
  • As a precautionary measure, use the offline method to backup bookmarks.

If the issue persists, move on to the next section.

How to fix the Reading List not syncing issue

Whether your Reading List on iPhone doesn’t sync with the Reading list on Mac, iPad, or both, these fixes should help you resolve the issue.

  • Enable iCloud Bookmarks sync
  • Restart devices
  • Turn off and on iCloud Bookmarks
  • Sign out and back into iCloud
  • Force Sync Safari to iCloud on Mac
  • Update iOS/macOS

1. Enable iCloud Bookmarks sync

The Reading List will sync only if the iCloud Bookmark is activated. It could also be one of the reasons why Safari bookmarks aren’t syncing. Follow the steps below to activate it on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Enable iCloud Bookmarks sync on iPhone and iPad

  • On Mac : Click Apple menu  → Open System Preferences → Apple ID → Select iCloud → click Safari .

click Apple ID from System Preferences on Mac

2. Restart devices

Restart is always worth a try. Software glitch (if any) will be resolved when all the processes and apps are restarted. Here’s how you can force restart an iPhone or iPad . For Mac, simply press and hold the power button.

3. Turn off and on iCloud Bookmarks

In some cases, simply turning off iCloud bookmarks and enabling it again after waiting a few seconds could fix the Reading List sync issue.

On iPhone and iPad :

  • Open Settings .
  • Tap Apple ID .
  • Select iCloud and disable Safari . Choose whether you want to keep the data on iPhone or Delete it completely.

Turn off iCloud Bookmarks and switch it on again on iPhone

  • Click the Apple menu  and open System Preferences .
  • Select Apple ID → iCloud.
  • Uncheck Safari .

Reading List still not syncing? Proceed to the next troubleshooting step.

4. Sign out and back into iCloud

Signing out and back in have fixed the issue for a few. So, I suggest trying this fix. Moreover, restart your device before signing back in. Here’s how to sign out:

Sign Out of iCloud on iPhone and iPad

5. Force Sync Safari to iCloud on Mac

You can force sync Safari on Mac to fix the sync issue. Before doing so, make sure the Safari browser is closed.

  • Using Spotlight by pressing cmd + Space bar and searching for Terminal
  • Going to Finder → Applications → Utilities → Terminal
  • Type the following command in Terminal and hit Enter . defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeInternalDebugMenu 1
  • Open Safari .
  • Click Debug and open Sync iCloud History .

Now, you should see if Reading List is synced between all devices on your iCloud.

6. Update iOS/macOS

After all, the Reading List sync issue could be a build-specific bug; update your iPhone, iPad, and Mac to the latest software version. Now, give it another go and check if the issue persists.

I have a problem with Safari Bookmarks/Favorities in iOS 15.4. If I add a new page to bookmark (or inside a Bookmark folder), this new page is synced through my devices but the position is always on top of the others. If I move it, the new position doesn’t sync… Please can you confirm it?

Jayseph

macrumors member

Yep. I have noticed the same issue.

Yeah, I've been fighting this issue over the past few days, but on my Mac. After updating to macOS 12.3/Safari 15.4, the first bookmark I added in Safari on my Mac went to the top of the list and synced to my iPhone/iPad that way. If I changed the position on my Mac, the position never synced to my iPhone/iPad. I then changed the position on my iPad, and that synced to my iPhone. All is good now, right? Nope... When I re-opened Safari on the Mac, the bookmark would be at the top of the list again. Then checking my iPhone/iPad, it was back to the top of the list there as well. After doing some troubleshooting, I found that my bookmarks would get reverted just after quitting and re-opening Safari (positions would be forgotten, added bookmarks would be lost, deleted bookmarks would be back). It seemed as if it was only retaining the changes in memory and not getting saved to the disk or iCloud. (And/or pushing the old/corrupt version back to iCloud?) My bookmarks are syncing fine between my iPhone and iPad though (both on iOS/iPadOS 15.4), just not to/from my Mac reliably. I thought I had it fixed this morning by disabling Safari syncing, deleting my Bookmarks.plist file, and re-enabling Safari syncing (based on this thread ). All was good for awhile, but it seems to be acting up now that I try it again. (Added a bookmark on my Mac. It added to the bottom of the list this time, but isn't syncing to my iPhone/iPad. Restarted Safari and the bookmark isn't there anymore. Added a bookmark on my iPhone, and that synced to my iPad but not to my Mac.) Just out of curiosity, do you have a Mac too? Could Safari on the Mac actually be the culprit? Not sure if we're having the exact same issue, but Safari on the Mac seems to be the problem child for me.

Yes, I have a Mac and the issue is across all devices. I haven't really dug deep into this bug as I am dealing with multiple music bugs/issues since 15.4. This issue has been really small in comparison. Just a minor nuisance.

Ive also had this issue for the last few days. Its really been annoying. I thought I was the only the one. Ive tried signing out of iCloud on all devices but it didn't help.

I have this issue across all my devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac).

w5jck

I’ve noticed since 15.3 that syncing Mail, texts, Notes, etc. often requires me to force close the app on the other devices and reopen them before it syncs. It is still pretty slow at syncing in 15.4 too. I haven’t noticed the bookmark issue, but I haven’t added any new ones lately. But the old bookmark issue of not remembering where I was in the bookmarks is really aggravating.

I just came here to post this issue, and found it here … For me it‘s not just the synch issue - I don’t want bookmarks added to the top! It totally messes with my workflow, and my mind.

  • Mar 25, 2022

I am seeing the same issue among all my devices where iCloud sync is enabled for Safari. Bookmarks, Reading List, and History are not syncing between any device. If I disable iCloud sync for Safari and enable it again, the issue is temporarily fixed but then breaks again.

Same issue. I been on with Apple all week running test. Issue is found and engineering is working on it. Apple said it partially the server and my iPhone. They went in my iPhone and IMac to down load logs after the replicated issue. They are calling me back Sunday to get repaired

  • Apr 1, 2022

This bug is driving me insane as I have multiple devices and every time when I make a change of orders (folders first then individual bookmarks) it somehow goes back to the other way which is out of sync. I stayed up to update all the devices to 15.4.1 and 12.3.1 but the problem is still there!

Safari is a mess in 15.4. Tab groups are bustest (they crash or go back one page when clicking links as if you never clicked it), giant google search favicon, recently visited are busted for nearly everyone, now this. Apple seems content with this garbage though so that’s nice.

I'm having this problem across IOS, iPadOS and MacOS. After trying repeatedly to repair bookmarks lists, they keep corrupting. I've turned off other devices from syncing and its not a problem syncing between devices but another in a long history of iCloud problems. Going back to the days of iDisk, it's been unreliable.

- since ios15.4(.1?), bookmark order of sync is broken - since ~ios 14 or 15.something, to me it seems like Apple must have changed the realtime sync behaviour, once battery is low. Depending on the devicetype, once battery is lower than 20 or 10%, realtimesync seems to be completely disabled. But recovers silently later on, after charging. - since around ios 10.x, the Chrome/ Windows iCloud sync seems to break in regular intervalls, I suspect at the time when either Chrome or iCloud gets a version update (which usually installs silently). A time consuming reinstall and reboot procedure of icloud for Windows plus lots of waiting is required to tempfix it until the next update happens. - sometimes the server side icloud bookmark sync service seems to be the issue, not sending sync notifications to some devices for several hours. - bookmark sync delays in general seem to have noticably increased in the last 2 years. - the merge process after the „do you want to merge the bookmarks“ question when manually trying fixing a sync-broken device has unfortunately gotten worse: about a year ago, that merge just led to several duplicate bookmarks. As of now, I usually loose a couple of recent bookmarks in that manual process, which is worse. bookmark sync unfortunately is one of those really rotten dark corners of iOS. Which is sad, because a long long time ago, it really worked flawlessly. I wish Apple would address that and properly fix that.

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Safari Reading List just will NOT sync between Mac and iPhone

It's been a few weeks now, the Reading List on Mac is not the Reading List on iPhone, as it doesn't sync through iCloud apparently, so it's different depending on which device I'm on. Some links that are on Mac are missing on iPhone, and vice versa. Depending on which device I had used to add them, they'll be missing on the other one.

Bookmarks have no issues, they're the same, so they sync. Also the custom Safari Start Page is the same, so it syncs. (I've made changes to both and they've synced!)

I've tried anything there is for the Reading List, all settings, all suggestions...everything. What could be causing this? Should I erase it all on both devices manually, and then re-add items on one device and see if it all syncs to the other device through iCloud? I think that can be an option at this point, but I wanted to check here beforehand.

Any ideas? Thank you!

safari reading list does not sync

Set up iCloud for Safari on all your devices

You can use iCloud with Safari on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac. You can also access web bookmarks on your Windows computer, and you can restore your bookmarks using iCloud.com. For an overview of what you can do with iCloud, see Keep your Safari bookmarks, Reading List, and tabs up to date with iCloud .

Note: Make sure you’re signed in with the same Apple ID on each device. If you have devices where you’re not signed in with your Apple ID or that have the Safari feature turned off, you won’t be able to access your Safari data stored in iCloud on those devices.

Set up iCloud for Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > [ your name ] > iCloud.

Do one of the following:

iOS 16, iPadOS 16, or later: Tap Show All, then turn on Safari.

iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or earlier: Turn on Safari.

To see your bookmarks, Reading List, Tab Groups, and tabs open on your other devices, open Safari.
