Bankura ( Bengali : বাঁকুড়া Bām̐kuṛā BAH n -koo-rrah) is the headquarters of its namesake Bankura district of West Bengal . Bankura town is an important stopover for most of the tourist destinations in Bankura and Purulia.

The nearest airport is Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport ( RDP  IATA ) at Durgapur , but only a few flights are present at the airport. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport ( CCU  IATA ) at Kolkata is the nearest airport to get to Bankura smoothly.

By bus [ edit ]

Private and state transport buses are the most convenient to reach Bankura, although rail transport is also available. There are buses between Kolkata and Bankura. Regular bus services are also available for Malda, Siliguri, Purulia, Medinipur, Kharagpur, Tatanagar, Ranchi etc.

From Howrah, trains like Rajdhani Express (Bhubaneswar Rajdhani), Rupasi Bangla, Purulia Express, Chakradharpur Passenger, Samarsata Express (Howrah to LTT)-(Bi-weekly) are available. Puri Express( Puri-New Delhi), Baidyanath Dham Express (Patna-Puri), Guwahati-Puri Express also run via Bankura. Passenger trains like Tatanagar-Kharagpur, Asansol-Kharagpur connect Bankura with major railheads in this region.

While the town itself has only a handful of attractions, it is surrounded by several tourist destinations like Biharinath , Bishnupur and Mukutmanipur . Thus, Bankura town serves as the base to visit these destinations.

• Bankura is terracotta country. There are artistically designed terracota panels on temple walls, some depicting Ramayana and Mahabharata themes, but simple terracota items as wall plates and ashtrays are also readily available. The famous Bankura horse, now the symbol of Indian handicrafts, is available in various sizes, ranging from less than a feet to around three feet tall. With mounting tourist demand, wood-carved versions are also available.
• Bishnupur baluchari saris are wonderfully handcrafted.

• Bankura has its own sweetmeat speciality - mecha sandesh . The Beliator version is more renowned. Another popular sweetmeat, pera , is better known at Chatna. You can look for these in Bankura city also.

There are a few good restaurants such as Hotel Saptarshi (Lalbazar), Saptaparna (Chandmaridanga) and Classic (Chandmaridanga), where all kinds food are available at a cheap price.

Bankura is an interesting tourist destination in West Bengal . With a rich cultural heritage and history to boast of, Bankura can be quite a captivating experience for the travelers. How to Reach

The closest airport to Bankura is Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Dum Dum, Kolkata located about 170 km away. There is another new airport now that can be accessed in Durgapur that is a mere 45 km from Bankura. However Durgapur is yet to enjoy the kind of connectivity that the Kolkata airport does with rest of the country. From the airports tourists can hire cabs to reach their preferred destination in Bankura.

Bankura does have a railway station of its own, the Bankura Junction Railway Station which is part of the South eastern railways. This is however not a very big junction and has trains traveling to and from Kolkata and Bhubaneshwar only. The closest major railheads are Midnapore railway Junction and Sealdah in Kolkata. Midnapore has trains coming from different parts of the state while Kolkata of course enjoys superb connectivity with the rest of the country. From the station tourists can take taxi to reach Bankura.

Bankura enjoys good connectivity by roads with major places of the state. It is connected by National Highway 14 and State Highways 5 and 9. There are regular buses operated by South Bengal State Transport Corporation (SBSTC) from Bankura to Kolkata up and down. It takes about 5-6 hours to cover a distance of 170 km.

Getting Around:  

For moving around Bankura and visiting places tourists can rely on rickshaws and auto rickshaws. They more than suffice. Rental cars are a good option too if you want to travel some distance to see the neighboring tourist areas. They are easily available.

Summer (March to May):

Bankura, like most of the places in Bengal, barring the northern part, experiences sizzling hot summers. Summer sets in March and continues till June when monsoon arrives. It is hot, sultry and extremely uncomfortable. Temperature crosses the 40°C mark but the feel factor is much more. Touring or moving around Bankura can be extremely tough and unpleasant.

Monsoon (June to September):

The first showers of monsoon bring much needed respite from the hot sultry summer months. It infuses freshness everywhere and the weather improves. However Bankura receives considerable amount of rainfall that makes traveling and sightseeing difficult.

Winter (November to February):

Winter starts setting by November and the mercury dips considerably, which is such a relief after the humid and wet summer and monsoon. Temperature remains between 10°C and 22°C. The sky remains clear and blue, there is no rainfall or uncomfortable heat. The weather is perfect for exploring Bankura and the neighboring areas. It is undoubtedly the best time for visiting the town.

Trekking in Susunia and Biharinath Hills:

Susunia and Biharinath hills offer a lucrative opportunity for enthusiastic trekkers. Susunia is 1500 feet high covered with rich vegetation and trees while Biharinath temple is one of the tallest hills in the region and offers a great view of the surrounding Purulia hills and River Damodar. Places to visit in Bankura

Located at a distance of 34km from Bankura is an important tourist destination called Bishnupur . Formerly the capital of Mallabhum, Bishnupur is a historical significant place of West Bengal. There are approximately 16 terracotta temples within the boundary of Bishnupur, the most famous one being the Rasmancha and Madan Mohan Temple.

Jayarambati

Jayarambati is a sacred town in Bankura District located at a distance of 48km from Bishnupur. It is the birth place of Sarada Devi making it the pilgrimage hub for the followers of Sri Ramakrishna. There is a temple called Matrimandir in Jayarambati dedicated to Sarada Devi.

Jhilimili is a nature bound place located at a distance of 70km from Bankhura. The prime attraction of Jhilimili is the watch tower which offers a panoramic vista of river Kangsabati meandering through the emerald green forest. The river side of Kangsabati in Jhilimili has become a famous picnic spot of Bankhura.

Susunia Hill

Susunia is the name of a hill situated on the north-western part of Bankura. It is a known excavating site in West Bengal. Susunia Hill is located at a distance of 20km from the Bankura Railway Station. Fossil of many animal species like Asiatic Lion, giraffe, hyena were discovered from Susunia Hill. It is also known for its natural spring. Being a part of Eastern Ghat, Susunia Hill houses vast collection of medicinal plants. Visitors can find the oldest rock inscription of West Bengal in Susunia Hill. Lately the verdant land and rocky landscape of Susunia hill has become an ideal place for partaking in camping and rock climbing.

Mukutmanipur

Mukutmanipur is an important tourist destination of Bankura. It is quaint town located at a distance of 52km Bankura District Headquarter. Mukutmanipur is situated at the confluence of River Kumari and River Kangsabati. Mukutmanipur dam is the prime attraction of this town. It is the second largest dam in the country.

Biharinath Hill

Biharinath Hill , at an altitude of 448mt is the highest point of Bankura. It is situated at the northwestern side at a distance of 57 km from the main town of Bankura. In the ancient days Biharinath Hill was the centre of Jainism and at the present time it has become the hub of adventurer and pilgrims. The untarnished natural beauty and sacred Shiva Temple of Biharinath has attracted many travelers.

Bankura district (Pron: bãkuɽa) is an administrative unit in the Indian state of West Bengal has a district town named Bankura. It has three sub-divisions i.e. Bankura Sadar, Khatra, Bishnupur.

Bankura district is surrounded by Purba Bardhaman district and Paschim Bardhaman district in the north, Purulia district in the west, Jhargram district and Paschim Medinipur district in the south, and some part of Hooghly district in the east.  Google Map

There are two major ecotourism centers developed under the maintenance of the West Bengal forest and local JFMC. Those are Susunia and Biharinath.

From the beginning of March to early June, hot westerly winds prevail, the thermometer in the shade rising to around 45 °C (113 °F). The monsoon months, June to September, are comparatively pleasant. The total average rainfall is 1,400 millimeters (55 in), the bulk of the rain coming in the months of June to September. Winters are pleasant with temperatures dropping down to below 27 °C (81 °F) in December.

The hills of the district consist of outliers of the Chotonagpur plateau and only two are of any great height –  Biharinath  and  Susunia . While the former rises to a height of 448 metres (1,470 ft), the latter attains a height of 440 metres (1,440 ft)

Kangsabati, Silabati, Darakeswar, Gandeswari

Bankura Junction railway station is managed by the South Eastern Railways and is on the Adra-Midnapore rail route. It is in Bankura city. Bhubaneswar Rajdhani Express, Rupashi Bangla Express, Aranyak Express, Puri-New Delhi(Nandan Kanan) Superfast Express, Ernakulam-Patna Express, Howrah-LTT Samarsata Express, and Purulia-Howrah Express pass through this station. It is the originating and terminating station of the Bankura Damodar Railway which will connect to the Howrah-Bardhaman Chord section. A computerized reservation facility is available. Going towards the northwest, Adra Junction Railway Station is the nearest main station, and moving south, Midnapore Railway Station is the major station next to Bankura. The Bankura Junction railway station and bridge over the Dhaleshwari River were built by Gujarati Railway Contractors of the town Jeewan Gangji Savaria and Lalji Raja Vadher in 1900 working for Bengal Nagpur Railway. National Highway 14 (India) runs from Morgan (in Murshidabad district) to Kharagpur (in Paschim Medinipur district), State Highway 9 (West Bengal) runs from Durgapur (in Paschim Bardhaman district) to Nayagram (in Jhargram district) and State Highway 5 (West Bengal) running from Rupnarayanpur (in Bardhaman district) to Junput (in Purba Medinipur) pass through Bankura. NH 14 links Bankura to NH 12 and NH 16. Both NH 14 and SH 9 link Bankura to NH 19 (Grand Trunk Road).
