For out of town visitors , please note that the weather in Chicago on the 4th of July is usually hot and humid. Here are some things to pack if you are visiting for the first time:

• Comfortable walking shoes – Chicago is a very walkable city so you will probably do a lot of walking • Reusable water bottle – It is usually hot and humid so it is important to stay hydrated • Sunglasses • A hat • A travel umbrella in case it rains • Light sweater (and scarf) – For cooler nights , lake cruises and indoor places with too much air conditioning • Waterproof case  – For your phone if you plan to go kayaking or spend time in the water • External battery for your phone – To recharge your phone’s battery when you are outdoors • Mosquito repellent – If you plan to be outside around dusk or at night. • Sunscreen – A must if you will be spending a lot of time outside in the day • Bathing suit and other beach essentials (if you are planning to spend time at the beach)

Watch Fireworks

The city of Chicago has not yet scheduled an official fireworks show on the 4th of July but you can watch fireworks at Navy Pier on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 and Saturday, July 6, 2024. While you can watch the fireworks show from Navy Pier, you can also watch the show from various spots along the Lakefront.

The best and most relaxing way to see the fireworks is on a fireworks lake or river cruise .

You can also join a fireworks segway tour .

Join a July 4th, Independence Day Cruise

Want to drink while enjoying being on the water? Join a July 4th, Independence Day Cruise and party on the “Summer Of George” boat. Celebrate Independence Day with this epic day cruise with two levels of music and revelry, a DJ and full bar and snacks.

Enjoy the Views from 360 CHICAGO Observation Deck

360 CHICAGO , the observatory on the 94th floor of 875 North Michigan Avenue (the former John Hancock Building), has one of the best views of the Chicago skyline and Lake Michigan. This is a more quiet spot to see fireworks. (Click here to buy a skip the line ticket ).

Take an Architecture River Cruise

Chicago has amazing architecture and the best way enjoy it is by going on an architecture river cruise .

If your time is short, you can do a combination river and lake cruise .

Watch a NASCAR Street Race

The NASCAR Chicago Street Race (July 6-7, 2024) is back for its second year. Even if you are not interested in NASCAR, check to see that street closures do not affect your travel plans as many streets will be closed offf.

For a unique experience you can watch one of the races from the “Summer of George” Yacht during the Nascar Chicago Day 2 Viewing Party .

Have Fun at Navy Pier

Go Kayaking

A fun way to explore the city is to go kayaking in the Chicago River or Lake Michigan. You can rent kayaks at Ohio Street Beach here .

There are several companies that offer kayaking tours in Chicago including Urban Kayaks, Kayak Chicago and Wateriders .

Please note that you will get a little wet so bring a waterproof case for your phone and water-resistant or quick-drying clothing.

Hang Out on the Riverwalk

The Chicago Riverwalk is one of the best spots in Chicago for boat and people watching. There are also restaurants , bars, shops and spots to sit and relax along the way.

Where: Along the south bank of the Chicago River in downtown Chicago from Lake Michigan to west of Franklin Street. You can see a map of attractions on the Riverwalk here .

Hang out at the Beach

Most people don’t think of Chicago as a beach destination but Chicago has many beaches on Lake Michigan.   Oak Street Beach and Ohio Street Beach are conveniently located close to the major tourist attractions. The popular North Avenue Beach , located close to Lincoln Park, has great skyline views and has more of a party vibe.

Enjoy the Lakefront Trail

If you enjoy being outdoors , head to the Lakefront Trail , a paved path on a 18-mile-long stretch along Lake Michigan. Walking or biking all or part of the trail is a great way to see Chicago skyline, people watch and get some exercise. Here is a map of the trail as well as its access points.

Look for Street Art

Chicago is full of street art and there are always new murals popping up. One of the most famous Chicago murals is “Moose Bubblegum Bubble” (pictured above) by Jacob Watts which located at 33 E. Ida B. Wells Drive (formerly 33 E. Congress Parkway). It is part of the Wabash Arts Corridor which is walking distance to Millennium Park, The Art Institute of Chicago and other well known tourist attractions. Another famous mural is the Greetings From Chicago Mural at 2226 N Milwaukee Ave, in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood. You can see this mural and other street art on this street art tour .

Walk The 606

The 606 is Chicago’s version of The Highline in NYC , an elevated trail goes through 2.7 miles of the city’s northwest side neighborhoods: Wicker Park, Bucktown, Humboldt Park, and Logan Square.  It is a bit off the beaten tourist path but it great place to walk, run or bike. There are several access points so you can get off the trail to explore the various neighborhoods.

Eat or Drink on a Rooftop

Chicago has several rooftop bars and restaurants with amazing views of Chicago.  Here are some of the best rooftops in Chicago:

Cindy’s (12 S Michigan Ave) – Restaurant and bar on the rooftop of the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel located across Millennium Park which offers panoramic instagram worthy views of Millennium Park and Lake Michigan.

LH ON 22 (85 East Wacker Drive) – Enjoy classic cocktails and small bites from the outdoor LH terrace of LondonHouse Chicago which offers great views of the Chicago River, Lake Michigan and the Magnificent Mile.

The J. Parker (1816 N Clark St) on the rooftop of the Hotel Lincoln with great views of Lincoln Park.

Kennedy Rooftop  (1551 W North Ave) on top of the Hyatt Place Wicker Park , has amazing skyline views.

Watch a Baseball Game

Chicago is known for their love of sports, including baseball. You don’t need to be a baseball fan to enjoy a game – it is fun to just soak in the atmosphere.

Where to Watch the Chicago Fourth of July Fireworks 2023

There’s much to celebrate about summer in Chicago , with its vibrant festival rotation, lively rooftop scene, lakefront gatherings, and of course the Navy Pier’s bi-weekly fireworks show. The pyrotechnics on Saturday, July 1 will ring in the holiday weekend with a brilliant spectacle of color and music you won’t want to miss. Arrive to the shoreline early for a spot, or explore a number of other options across the city—from skyscrapers to cycleboats (and plenty in between). Here are some of the best places to catch the 4th of July fireworks in Chicago.

Navy Pier's fireworks are a can't-miss summer tradition.

You can enjoy fireworks at Navy Pier every Wednesday at 9 p.m. and Saturday at 10 p.m. throughout the summer. Note that their special Independence Day display on July 1 will begin at 9 p.m., an hour earlier than their typical Saturday showtime.

The pier juts into Lake Michigan for the length of six city blocks and it offers amazing views over the water, but the nearby lakeshore is also a perfect place to catch the action. Arrive early for musical performances happening from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Navy Pier Beer Garden . For an extra special evening, try to time a ride on the pier’s 200-foot Centennial Ferris Wheel to the start of the fireworks show.

If you want some drinks with your pyrotechnics, visit the 52,000-square-foot Offshore Rooftop and look into booking one of their special showtime reservations for some of the best seats in the house. Or consider a stay at Sable at Navy Pier , where a Saturday fireworks package includes Champagne and chocolate upon arrival, a late checkout, and upgrades to a higher floor, pending availability.

River cruises

A summertime cruise on the Chicago River or Lake Michigan is always a good idea, but particularly so beneath a dazzling lights display. No friend with a boat? No problem, thanks to Boatsetter , a boat rental community featuring hundreds of makes and models, from pontoons and wake boats to motor yachts and power cruisers. Book one for July 1 or July 5—the days of the Navy Pier fireworks—and bring your squad: most charters can accommodate up to 12 people.

You’ll feel extra patriotic when booking with Chicago Fireboat Tours , a veteran-owned and -operated business featuring cruises on the Fred A. Busse, a retired fireboat that served the Chicago Fire Department for more than 40 years. They offer a fireworks cruise every Saturday, including on July 1 at 8:15 p.m. (ensuring ample time before the 9 p.m. show).

Chicago Electric Boat Company has self-guided Duffy, retro, donut, and pontoon boats for rent, with the option to hire a captain. Reserve one of their party barges, cycleboats, or yachts—they come with a professional captain and deck hand—if you’re looking to kick back (and look up). And just in time for summer, they launched a lakefront location at Monroe Harbor, offering private cruises with perfect fireworks views.

For a memorable stay, book a weekend at the Four Seasons and some time aboard their 52-foot yacht , where you can enjoy a curated fireworks experience, including a bespoke menu from chef Richie Farina.

NASCAR Chicago Street Race

For NASCAR’s 75th anniversary season, Chicago is hosting the inaugural Chicago Street Race Weekend on July 1 and 2, featuring a 12-turn, 2.2-mile street course that will take drivers by some of the city’s most iconic sites and landmarks. Stick around post-race on July 1, when The Chainsmokers perform at Grant Park—the ultimate accompaniment to that night’s fireworks, accessible exclusively through NASCAR Chicago Experiences by QuintEvents (packages ranging to include prime seating and hotel stays).

Museum Campus

Promontory Point offers all-encompassing views over the distant, illuminated skyline—but for slightly closer views, settle in somewhere on Museum Campus (namely, the coveted stretch between the Adler Planetarium and the Shedd Aquarium ). Keep the celebrations going on July 5, when the Shedd Aquarium hosts “ Jazzin’ at the Shedd ,” a weekly chance to enjoy drinks and music from one of Chicago’s top jazz ensembles, plus excellent lakefront and skyline views. Navy Pier’s regularly programmed Wednesday fireworks kick off at 9 p.m., ensuring a special way to wind down the evening.

Cindy’s and the Chicago Athletic Association

For an exciting viewing experience, gather with friends at any number of hotels with balconies, rooftops, or lake views—and if you’re near Millennium Park, make it the Chicago Athletic Association and its rooftop restaurant Cindy’s , where guests can enjoy bites by chef Kaleena Bliss while taking in exceptional city views. While there, try the Tierra Roja, a newly debuted cocktail featuring mezcal, passionfruit, and green tea-infused rum.

360 CHICAGO and The Signature Room

For some of the best vantage points in the city, get advance tickets to the 360 CHICAGO observation deck at 875 N Chicago (formerly the John Hancock Center). All admission passes include access from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., and you can spring for an all-access ticket to experience TILT, a thrill ride that leans you forward for a staggering 1000-foot-view of the Mag Mile.

Afterwards, check out the recently opened CloudBar, a cocktail space featuring local breweries, Chicago-inspired cocktails, and stunning views for the fireworks. For a full dinner, book a table at The Signature Room one floor up, where you can catch the show with a glass of Champagne in hand.

The Up Room has sweeping views of the city skyline—and any 4th of July fireworks Chicago has to offer.

If you don’t do crowds and are content with neighborhood fireworks, opt for The Robey hotel in Wicker Park. You’ll be far from the lake, but you’ll be able to spot fireworks in every direction, especially from the hotel’s 13th-floor lounge, The Up Room . Afterwards, head to the 6th-floor Cabana Club , where you can dip your toes in the outdoor pool and order frozen drinks and bar bites by chef Michael Elliott. Most anything hugging the lakeshore to the north and south of Navy Pier will afford prime fireworks views—and fewer crowds. For a lively option, try Shore Club , a summertime-only hotspot at North Avenue Beach , where the red-white-and-blue frozen cocktail is a holiday must-order. The venue hosts its epic Fourth of July beachside brunch all weekend long. Upgrade that experience with a sun bed, daybed, or cabana at the Oasis at Shore Club —complete with bottle service.

Know Before You Go on a July 4th Fireworks Cruise with Kids

• Some 4th of July fireworks cruises run $300-plus per person. Many rides priced at less than $200 are no-frills, with cash bars and buffets.
• Every charter boat within a 50-mile radius seems to host July 4th cruises in NYC, and some are more professional than others. If you're interested in a July 4th cruise, it's important to call ahead and go over the details. There's nothing worse than boarding a boat for a multi-hour tour and realizing you're not happy with what you're getting. (And what you're getting, for the most part, is just a front-row seat for the fireworks.)
• When setting sail with kids, shorter rides are probably best. That way you don't risk them getting bored, tired, or cranky.

Things to Do on 4th of July in Idaho

With less than a week left before July 4th, there’s just enough time to put together a celebration plan. To help you figure out what to do, here are some of the activities happening in communities around the state. Have a wonderful and safe 4th of July celebration!

Get started early with the Gem State Kiwanis Annual 4th of July Pancake Breakfast at Julia Davis Park at 7 a.m. The fun wraps up at 11 a.m. or when the pancakes are gone.  Then head downtown for the We The People 4th of July Parade  at 11 a.m. near 10th and Jefferson   . Round out the day with Boise’s 4th of July Fireworks Celebration at Expo Idaho. Gates open for this free event at 6 p.m., fireworks start around 10:15 p.m.

Celebrate the Fourth of July at the Independence Day Festival at Storey Park. Starting at 3:00 p.m., enjoy bounce houses, slides and an obstacle course, kids games, live music, and not just food trucks but a food truck rally. Stay for the fireworks show, which starts at 10:15 p.m. or just after dusk.

Caldwell puts on a heck of a 4th of July celebration. Start the day at 9 a.m. with a parade, then check out the classic car show. The Patriotic Bike contest starts at 12:30 p.m., followed by a Pie Eating Contest. Brothers Park is the place to be for the fireworks which start around 10 p.m.

Melba is a small town with a huge 4th of July celebration. The Melba “ Olde Tyme ” 4th of July celebration begins at 7 a.m. with a Fun Run, then a parade, arts and crafts fair, car show, antique tractor pull, games, and tasty eats. Fireworks start at dusk with stadium seating available.

If horses, cattle, and cowboys are more your style, check out the famous Hailey “ Days of the Old West Celebration ,” which runs the 1st through the 4th. On the 4th, start with the famous Days of the Old West Parade on Main Street at noon. Follow that up with the 3rd Annual Draper Preserve RiverFest which kicks off at 1:30 p.m. with  live music, food, craft vendors, and a Children’s Carnival.  Check out the rodeo in the evening and then grab a seat for the fireworks show at dusk.

In Stanley , the party starts when you get there. Seriously, the starting time is listed as: “When you get in town.” Spend the day fishing, boating, swimming and enjoying the beauty of the Sawtooths. In the evening, head into Pioneer Park by 5:30 p.m. for the parade, followed by live music and a street dance. When darkness falls, sit back and relax while you enjoy the fireworks show.

A single day or weekend 4th of July celebration isn’t good enough for McCall . Instead, McCall is offering the “10 Days of Fourth of July Fun” celebration beginning June 30th. There’s too much to list, but on the 4th, among other things, check out the Thunder Mountain Days Parade, OR the 4th of July Kick-off Bubble Parade, a volleyball tournament, craft fairs, a street dance, and end the day with majestic fireworks show over Payette Lake. LONDON — U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday called for a general election to take place on July 4, after economic data showed a fall in inflation near the British central bank's 2% target earlier in the day.

"Earlier today I spoke with his majesty the King to ask for the dissolution of Parliament. The King has granted this request, and we will have a general election on the 4th of July." said Sunak, speaking during a news conference outside Downing Street.

Data from the Office for National Statistics earlier Wednesday showed that U.K. inflation dropped to 2.3% in April.

Sunak's ruling Conservative Party had been hoping for signs of an improving economic environment, as it lags in the  polls  ahead of the national election.

"Economic stability is the bedrock of any future success," said Sunak. "And because of our collective sacrifice and your hard work, we have reached two major milestones in delivering that stability."

He qualified that the U.K. economy is now growing faster than anyone expected.

"Uncertain times call for a clear plan and bold action," said Sunak, referencing the ongoing war in Ukraine . "I'm guided by doing what is right for our country, not what is easy."

Sunak, who has held the post of prime minister since October 2022, pledged to earn the the trust of the British people.

"People across the UK are crying out for change, and this election is finally our chance to make it happen," Liberal Democrats Party leader Ed Davey said on X.

British economy in focus

"We've tackled inflation, controlled debt and cut workers' taxes, increased the state pension by £900, we've reduced taxes on investment and seized the opportunities of Brexit to make this the best country in the world to grow a business, put record amounts of funding into our NHS and ensured it's now training the doctors and nurses it needs for decades to come," said Sunak.

Keir Starmer, leader of the rival Labour faction, circulated a campaign video on social media platform X urging poll-goers to vote for his party, which pledges "to serve working people as you drive our country forward, with economic stability at the forefront of everything we do."

The U.K. economy has been convalescing from a period of sky-high inflation in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the commercial impacts of the country's exit from the European Union and elevated energy prices, after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The country entered a shallow recession in the second half of last year, with recent figures indicating slight growth in early 2024.

"With growth recovering faster than expected, the UK economy is approaching a soft landing, following a mild technical recession in 2023," the International Monetary Fund said Tuesday, as it upgraded its forecast for the British economy to expand by 0.7% this year, from a previous outlook of 0.5% GDP growth in 2024.

Nevertheless, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development earlier this month noted Britain's "sluggish" growth has put it on track to be the worst-performing economy of all advanced nations next year.

MLB teams that will be sellers at the trade deadline and the players they will dangle

With a week until Memorial Day, there are only six MLB teams that I project to be definite “sellers” at the July 30 trade deadline: the Chicago White Sox (14-33), the Colorado Rockies (15-31), the Los Angeles Angels (18-29), the Miami Marlins (15-33), the Oakland A’s (19-30) and the St. Louis Cardinals (20-26). For now, I can still see a pathway for the other 24 teams to stay in the race, at least in the short term.

Let’s look at those six prospective sellers and the players they have who could generate trade interest from contending clubs. In the process, we’ll see why those six teams have their respective poor records and also show they don’t have much to offer in deadline deals — with a few exceptions.

1. White Sox

Starting pitchers: Garrett Crochet is the White Sox’s best starting pitcher, but they’re unlikely to trade him as he’s only 24 and profiles as their future No. 1 starter. Erick Fedde is the starter they’re most likely to deal. They signed him in the offseason to a club-friendly two-year, $15 million deal and he has delivered, going 4-0 with a 2.60 ERA in nine starts. A former first-round pick of the Washington Nationals , Fedde pitched in South Korea in 2023 and was the KBO’s best starting pitcher, going 20-6 with a 2.00 ERA over 180 1/3 innings. The 31-year-old righty looks like he’s figured it out in his return to the majors, and at that affordable price point should fetch the White Sox a relatively strong mid-level prospect package in return.

Relievers: Contenders will be chasing a couple of White Sox relievers who are off to solid starts: righty Steven Wilson (2.84 ERA in 21 appearances) and lefty Tim Hill (2.25 ERA in 19 appearances). The White Sox also might move their hard-throwing closer, Michael Kopech , if the price is right. He is under team control through next season.

Catchers: A contending team looking for a veteran backup catcher with a winning track record of calling pitches could make a move for Martín Maldonado , 37, though he’s in significant decline and provides zero offense. But a team seeking a mentor for a younger catcher might take a flier on him.

Infielders: The White Sox don’t have much to offer in the infield outside of utility players such as second baseman Nicky Lopez and shortstop Paul DeJong , and neither would bring back anything of significance. First baseman Andrew Vaughn is not hitting and third baseman Yoán Moncada (adductor strain) remains on the injured list. An impending free agent, Moncada is making $24.8 million this year with another $5 million due in the offseason when the White Sox decline his 2025 club option worth $25 million.

Outfielders: Center fielder Luis Robert Jr. , who last year hit .264 with 38 home runs, 80 RBIs and 20 stolen bases, is the White Sox’s best trade asset. The 2020 Gold Glove Award winner is working his way back from a right hip flexor strain and should be reinstated later this month or in early June. The White Sox prefer to build around the 26-year-old, but with so little to trade, their best play would be to swap him for a strong prospect package. They should be able to land at least one top prospect, another top-10 prospect, and a couple of top-30 type prospects in return from a contender. Trading Robert, who is under team control through 2027, is probably the White Sox’s best opportunity to improve their long-term future. Tommy Pham didn’t generate much interest in free agency before signing with the White Sox in April, which was puzzling after he hit 16 home runs with 68 RBIs and 22 stolen bases last year. He can still help a contender at age 36. Meanwhile, outfielders Andrew Benintendi and Gavin Sheets aren’t giving the White Sox much offensive production and there is very little trade interest in either one.

Designated hitters: If he can start hitting, Eloy Jiménez could have some trade value for a team looking for another power bat to lengthen its lineup. Jiménez has five homers and 12 RBIs in 128 at-bats. He’s reached base at only a 27 percent clip.

Most likely to be traded: RHP Erick Fedde, RHP Steven Wilson, LHP Tim Hill, RHP Michael Kopech

Starting pitchers: Austin Gomber and Cal Quantrill have both pitched well and could be traded. Through nine starts apiece, Gomber has a 3.02 ERA and Quantrill has a 3.66 ERA. But if the Rockies deal them, I can’t imagine how many games they’d end up losing and I’m not sure the return for either one would be worth fielding an even less competitive team for their fans.

Relievers: Lefty Jalen Beeks will probably be the most sought-after Rockies reliever at the trade deadline after converting four of five save opportunities and posting a 2.11 ERA over 19 appearances to start the year. Relievers such as Justin Lawrence and Victor Vodnik also could draw some interest.

Catchers: Elias Díaz, the 2023 All-Star Game MVP, is off to a nice start with a .299/.342/.423 slash line that would be a career best. Any contending team in need of a starting catcher will be looking at him first. Díaz will be a free agent after this season.

Infielders: Ryan McMahon is probably their best infield trade asset due to his positional flexibility and strong start to the season (.873 OPS). But he’s signed to a club-friendly deal through 2027 and it’s unlikely they will move him (or any other infielder).

Outfielders: The Rockies are building their team around their young outfielders — Nolan Jones (IL), Jordan Beck and Brenton Doyle — and won’t be shopping or moving any of them.

Designated hitters: Charlie Blackmon , 37, is an impending free agent but also in real decline. He’s batting .237 with one homer and an 82 OPS+ and is not tradable.

Most likely to be traded: C Elias Díaz, LHP Jalen Beeks

Starting pitchers: The Angels’ best three starters — Reid Detmers , Patrick Sandoval and Griffin Canning — all have ERAs above 4.55. Tyler Anderson has posted a 2.72 ERA over nine starts and José Soriano has a 3.30 ERA with 22 walks in 46 1/3 innings. Detmers and Sandoval are the best of the five and teams will have interest in them as third or fourth type starters.

Relievers: Carlos Estévez has six saves and three blown saves to go with a 4.91 ERA. He has 17 strikeouts and one walk in 14 2/3 innings. Sidearmer Adam Cimber and veteran Hunter Strickland could draw interest from teams looking for bullpen depth.

Catchers: Logan O’Hoppe is a franchise building block and won’t be available. None of their backup catchers will draw any interest.

Infielders: The Angels feel that first baseman Nolan Schanuel and shortstop Zach Neto are anchors of their long-term infield. No other infielders on this roster will generate trade interest.

Outfielders: Mike Trout isn’t going anywhere. Jo Adell is having a breakout season, leaving Taylor Ward as the best available outfielder via trade. Ward is hitting .275 with 10 homers and 28 RBIs.

Designated hitters: There is no trade interest in Willie Calhoun or the other players the Angels use in the DH spot.

Most likely to be traded: OF Taylor Ward, RHP Carlos Estévez, RHP Adam Cimber, RHP Hunter Strickland

Starting pitchers: The Marlins’ best starters, Sandy Alcantara and Eury Pérez , are on the IL and out for the year after Tommy John surgeries. Their next-best starter, Jesús Luzardo , has a 5.02 ERA over seven starts and spent time on the IL with elbow tightness. However, he’s pitched well in his first two starts back, striking out eight and walking two in 5 2/3 innings against the Phillies , then striking out seven and walking none in six scoreless innings versus the Mets . If Luzardo pitches well between now and the deadline, he’s the Marlin most likely to be traded. Other Marlins starters include Trevor Rogers (5.79 ERA in nine starts) and Edward Cabrera (7.17 ERA in five starts and currently on the IL). Ryan Weathers (3.81 ERA in nine starts) could generate some trade interest, but his lack of innings pitched over his career will be a concern for teams.

Relievers: Tanner Scott has converted five of six save opportunities and owns a 1.89 ERA over 19 appearances. He will be the most sought-after Marlin in trade talks.

Catchers: The Marlins have been looking to upgrade the catcher position ever since they traded J.T. Realmuto to the Phillies in 2019. Christian Bethancourt and Nick Fortes both profile as backup catchers with little trade interest.

Infielders: The Marlins will listen on both of their corner infielders, first baseman Josh Bell and third base power hitter Jake Burger . Bell is hitting .229/.313/.369 with six home runs. Burger has spent significant time on the IL and is hitting .171 with three homers in 105 at-bats.

Outfielders: Jazz Chisholm Jr. has been a mixed bag this season but has six homers and eight steals. Jesús Sánchez has never developed and is batting .222 with two homers. Avisaíl García is batting .240 with two homers.

Designated hitters: Bryan De La Cruz has been their best offensive outfielder, leading the team with nine home runs and 25 RBIs.

Most likely to be traded: LHP Tanner Scott, LHP Jesús Luzardo, 1B/DH Josh Bell

Starting pitchers: JP Sears and Paul Blackburn have been their two best starting pitchers and Blackburn, who is on the IL with a foot injury, is the most likely trade candidate, if he gets healthy and regains his fine early-season form. Veterans Ross Stripling and Alex Wood could provide rotation depth for a contender with significant starting pitching injuries, though Wood is currently on the IL himself with rotator cuff tendonitis.

Relievers: Mason Miller will be the most sought-after reliever at the trade deadline. The A’s do not want to trade their rookie closer, but they have to listen. What if a team such as the Orioles is willing to offer a package of something like third baseman Coby Mayo and right fielder Heston Kjerstad , which would net the A’s two everyday players for the long term? I still think the A’s best move is to develop Miller into a starting pitcher because he could become a difference-making ace who could lead their rotation for years to come. In addition to Miller, teams will pursue several other A’s relievers including  Lucas Erceg and Austin Adams .

Catchers: The A’s aren’t going to trade Shea Langeliers , who is an important building block for them. Kyle McCann has been a solid backup and I don’t see him getting moved either.

Infielders: Their best infielder, second baseman Zack Gelof , is off to a slow start this season with a .188 batting average and they’re not looking to move him anyway. Contending teams might have some interest in veteran Abraham Toro as a bench player because of his versatility to play second and third base (although at a below-average level), solid production at the plate (130 OPS+), strong underlying batting numbers and low salary.

Outfielders: The A’s haven’t gotten the offensive production they were hoping for from outfielders Esteury Ruiz , Lawrence Butler (currently in the minors), Tyler Nevin or even Seth Brown . ( JJ Bleday owns a 120 OPS+ and has been the best of that group by far, but he would seem unlikely to be traded given his salary and years of team control.) Not much to deal from there.

Designated hitters: Brent Rooker , who represented the A’s in the All-Star Game last year, has slashed .281/.358/.578 with seven doubles, 11 home runs and 32 RBIs in 151 plate appearances. Teams that need more offense include the Mariners , Reds, Royals and Guardians .

Most likely to be traded: DH Brent Rooker, RHP Lucas Erceg, RHP Paul Blackburn, RHP Austin Adams

Ranking the top 10 rookies in the AL, an early ROY race no one expected

6. Cardinals

Starting pitchers: Sonny Gray has been their best starter and at this point is the only one they will not consider trading. Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson , who both signed one-year contracts in the offseason, could be moved at the trade deadline, as could Miles Mikolas ; all three are 35 or older.

Relievers: Teams have already been calling the Cardinals about Ryan Helsley , who is one of the best closers in baseball. The Cardinals will ask for a haul in exchange, but because they have so many needs on their roster, a trade is possible if not likely. Helsley, who has a 1.35 ERA and 13 saves, is under team control through next season. Other St. Louis relievers who will draw trade interest include lefty JoJo Romero and righty Andrew Kittredge .

Catchers: Willson Contreras is on the IL and is untradable because of his contract . Iván Herrera has been solid for them. I can’t see a scenario where the Cardinals trade a catcher.

Infielders: First baseman Paul Goldschmidt is an impending free agent and could get traded at the deadline if he can start hitting. Goldschmidt, 36, looks like age and decline have caught up to him (75 OPS+, 32.3 percent strikeout rate), but with his strong intangibles and plus defense at first base, he could be dealt if he can show more offensively. Second baseman Nolan Gorman and shortstop Masyn Winn are in the Cardinals’ long-term plans. Third baseman Nolan Arenado ’s slow start (only three homers) and big contract that runs through 2027 make him tough to trade.

Outfielders: The Cardinals are not getting much offensive production from any of their young outfielders including Dylan Carlson and Lars Nootbaar as well as Jordan Walker and Victor Scott II , who were demoted. Center fielder Tommy Edman has been on the IL all season and the versatile Brendan Donovan is hitting just .233 with a .313 on-base percentage. The Cardinals have had a long list of outfielders who’ve played well after they got rid of them, from Adolis García to Randy Arozarena to most recently Tyler O’Neill . So, who knows, perhaps they trade from their plethora of young outfielders and that player blossoms elsewhere too.

Designated hitters: Alec Burleson has held his own, hitting .292 with five homers and 17 RBIs in 120 at-bats. Matt Carpenter , 38, has played in only eight games, going 7-for-30.

Most likely to be traded: RHP Ryan Helsley, 1B Paul Goldschmidt, RHP Lance Lynn, RHP Kyle Gibson, LHP JoJo Romero, RHP Andrew Kittredge
