Parasnath Hills are a range of hills in northern Jharkhand . The highest peak is 1350 metres.

Understand [ edit ]

This range is one of the most important pilgrimage centres for Jains. They call it Sammed Sikharji. The hill is named after Parasnath, the 23rd Tirthankara. Twenty of the twenty-four Jain Tirthankaras attained salvation on this hill. According to some, nine Tirthakaras attained salvation on this hill. For each of them there is a shrine (gumti or tuk) on the hill. Some of the temples on the hill are believed to be more than 2,000 years old. However, although the place has been inhabited from ancient times, the temples may be of more recent origin.

About 50,000 Jain pilgrims visit Sammed Shikharji every year.

The Santhals call it Marang Buru, the hill of the deity. They celebrate a hunting festival on the full moon day in Baisakh (mid April).

Get in [ edit ]

Best time to visit is from October to March when the weather is pleasant.

By road [ edit ]

Parasnath Hill is on Grand Trunk Road NH 2.The nearby place for reaching Parasnath is Ranchi 190 km, Bokaro 40 km, Jhumri Tileya 80 km Dhanbad 60 km and Hazaribagh 80 km

By rail [ edit ]

Parashnath station on the Howrah-Delhi grand chord line is the base for a visit to Parashnath. The adjacent town is called Isri or Isri Bazar . It has got some Jain dharmashalas. There is a Dak Bungalow at Dumri about a mile from the station. There is small station at Nimiaghat from where also Parasnath Hill is accessible, but the said route is not the popular one, people only travel by this route once a year. Best is to take 36 seat bus/rental car from Isri Bazar for Madhuban and the metalled trek route of 9 km to Shikharji (Parashnath).

  • Parasnath - one passenger train in the evening is available for Dhanbad.

Almost all the major trains running on The Grand Chord line (Delhi to Kolkata) stop at Parasnath station. These include New Delhi - Kolkata Rajdhani Express, Puri - New Delhi Purushottam Express, Mumbai- Howrah Mail, Ahmedabad-Asansol Parasnath Express. In view of the tourist volume, Parasnath station has been built as a model station by Indian Railways.

Get around [ edit ]

The summit of Parasnath Hill can be reached either from the southern or the northern side. There are two recognized routes to Parasnath Hill.

The southern approach is from Isri Bazaar, to the top, is motorable for about 2 km, the rest being a climb of 8 km.

The northern approach is a 13 km route from Madhuban village on the Dumri-Giridih road. Madhuban is about 40 km from Giridih and about 10 km from Parasnath rail station/ Isri Bazaar/ Dumri, all on Grand Trunk Road (NH 2). Buses ply along this route from Dumri to Giridih and stop at Madhuban village. Hired cars or taxis are available at Isri Bazar, just outside the rail station. There are a number of Jain temples at Madhuban.

After 3.5 km from Madhuban there is a stream called Gandharva nala and further up there is another stream Sita nala. The Jains hold the portion from Gandharva nala up to the summit as very sacred. It is easier to reach Parasnath from its northern side.

Ponies and dandis for the climb can be arranged at short notice. Jeeps and such power-driven vehicles can be hired to carry visitors for a considerable distance up the hill. Thereafter they have to walk.

Parasnath Hill – the revered pilgrimage of Shikharji in Giridih

Parasnath Hill, or Shikharji, is a famous Jain pilgrimage site situated in Giridih district in Jharkhand. It lies on NH 2, the Delhi-Kolkata highway in a section called the Grand Trunk road. Shikharji rises to 4,429 feet (1,350 meter) making it the highest mountain in Jharkhand. The pilgrimage to Shikharji is a round trip of 30 km through the Madhuban forest. The section from Gandharva Nala stream to the summit is the most sacred to Jains. The pilgrimage is made on foot or by a doli along a concrete paved track. Along the track are shrines to each of the twenty revered Tirthankaras. There is an option for parikrama of whole Parasnath Hill of 54km. The pathway of parikrama is throughout the forest and is only for walking.

Nearest railway station named “Parasnath Station” is situated in Isri bazar, Dumri Jharkhand. It is around 25km from Madhuban. Parasnath station is situated on Delhi-Howrah Grand Chord via Kanpur, Allahbad, Mugalsarai, Gaya, Asansol. Many long distance trains have halt at Parasnath Station. Daily connectivity to Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur, Ajmer, Kolkata, Patna, Allahabad, Kanpur, Jammu Tawi, Amritsar, Kalka etc are available. Even 12301-12302 Howrah Rajdhani Express via Gaya Junction has a halt on Parasnath station.

SIGNIFICANCE Shikharji (Śikharji) means the venerable peak. The site is also called Sammed Śikhar or Sammet Shikhar, meaning the peak of concentration, because it is a place where 20 of 24 Tirthankaras attained a state of mokṣha through meditative concentration. Name of the 20 Tirthankaras who attained moksha here are : Ajitnath, Sambhavnath, Abhinandan prabhu, Sumatinath, Padmprabhu, Suparshwanath, Chandraprabhu, Suvidhinath, Sheetalnath, Shreyansnath, Vimalnath, Anantnath, Dharmnath, Shantinath, Kunthunath, Arnath, Mallinath, Munisuvrat Swami, Neminath and Parshwanath. The word Parasnath is derived from Parshwanatha, the twenty-third Tirthankara of Jains, who also attained nirvana at the site. The earliest reference to Shikharji as a place of pilgrimage is found in the Jñātṛdhārmakātha, one of the twelve core texts of Jainism: at Shikharji, Mallinātha, the nineteenth Jina practiced samadhi. Shikharji is also mentioned in the Pārśvanāthacarita, a twelfth century biography of Pārśva.

It was made accessible since the construction of a road in 1838. Significantly the oldest of the Jain temple appears to date only from AD 1775. Parasnath is the “Marang Buru” or hill deity of the Santhals of Hazaribagh, Manbhum, Bankura and Santhal Parganas. In his book, Mahopadhyaya Lalitprabh Sagar ji described Shikharji as follows: “When just one auspicious event of one Tirthankar can convert a place into a pilgrimage, it will be quite impossible for human intelligence to assess the holiness and power of that pilgrimage where as many as twenty Tirthankars have lit-up the inextinguishable light of nirvana”.

Why I went to Parasnath Hill For 9 years, I was posted at Santaldih Thermal Power Plant which is situated at Santaldih, a town in Purulia Dist., WB, located near the border of Bengal and Jharkhand. Parasnath Hill is well accessible from Santaldih. The factor of proximity prompted me to cover the famous Jain pilgrimage shrine, which is otherwise a long way from Kolkata.

Memories from June 2013 I went to Parasnath Hill in 2013. On 22 nd June 2013, myself with my colleague Rajat started our journey from Dhanbad railway station. It is only one and a half hour car journey from Santaldih to Dhanbad. From Dhanbad we caught Jammu Tawi express at 5.35 pm. We reached Parasnath railway station at 6.30 pm.

Outside Parasnath Railway Station

Outside Parasnath Railway Station

Parasnath railway station is an old one. It was opened in 1906 and electrified in 1961-62. That is why infrastructural facilities are available at this remote place. Just outside the station there was a taxi stand and a rich market. We took a Maruti van for Rs.350/- for going to Niharika lodge at Madhuban. It was a neat and clean modern Jain lodge, under control of Saswat Trust. The journey took apprx. 40 minutes. We had a pre-booked double bed room for 2 nights for a total cost of Rs.1000/- only. Astonishingly cheap. The manager of Niharika Shri Aprameya Pandeya was a helpful person. Since there was no dinning facility at the lodge, we took dinner at a nearby local restaurant. It may be mentioned here that, entire Madhuban town is a complete veg one, you will not find a non-veg restaurant there.

For going upto the top, it takes normally 5 hours covering apprx. 13-14 km through a short route. Niharika staff advised us to start from 3 am in the morning. But we were tired, so we could get up only at 5.30 in the morning of 23 rd . June 2013. We saw the sun rise, got ready and took an auto from the gate of the lodge at 6.20 am. It reached us at the starting point of the yatra at 6.25 am. So we started our long walking journey from that point. The walkway was cemented.

Walking along the lonely way through the jungle

Slowly we were gaining height. We could see the skyline of the city. The way was through natural forest. We carried our rucksack with small quantity of drinking water and pack of cake and cashew. We were of the assumption that lots of snack stall will be available on the way – at least such type of information was available in websites. But we were proved absolutely wrong. Except very few tea stalls and lemon water stalls, nothing more was available throughout the entire journey.

Later we came to know that during the month of Shravan, such fooding facilities are made available temporarily. However, we noticed with astonishment that, after every 4-5 km, some semi covered hutments were there with laced cots (which are used in villages having local name of Khatiya). Tired yatris used to take rest by sleeping on such cots, which are provided free to the yatris.

After walking for one and a half hour, we stopped by a roadside tea stall. The stall owner lady was Nimya Devi. On talking to her we came to know that, for running such type of stalls, they come from the ground level. They do business in the hill for some hours and again return to the ground. We had some hot tea and biscuit and again started walking. The road was lonely.

Walkway went through dense hilly forest

Dense trees surrounded the hill. Hardly could we see the sun through the jungle. Weather was very humid. Unknown types of birds were flying around us. When we were passing through a small habitable area, suddenly some aged persons came out. Many hutments were seen here and there with clear marks of poverty. Such poor people asked for money. They were too aged to do any job. What a destiny! We could not understand whether they lived there on their own or they had been dumped at such interior and remote place. We found no answer, gave them some money and marched forward. What an experience that was.

At around 11.30 am, we arrived at a deserted Jain temple situated by the side of road. It was open, but nobody was there. We entered inside, where pictures of many Tirthankaras were hanging from the wall. We visited the temple and surrounding and then we moved towards the top.

Inside the deserted temple

At around 12.15 noon, we reached a flat place on the top of the hill. Though it was not the peak, but the flat area was very wide. From that area, many walkway went towards other adjoining hills. Each walkway ended at a different tonk devoted to a Tirthankar.

So many Tonks on the hill

So many Tonks on the hill

A tonk is a small civil structure made of white marble. Inside a tonk there was impression of feet on stone of the Tirthankar after whom the tonk was made. We visited some of the tonks. Each tonk was placed far away from each other situated on different hills.

A Tonk on the hill placed far away. Forest of Topchanchi can be seen behind the hill

A Tonk on the hill placed far away. Forest of Topchanchi can be seen behind the hill

So one needs time, physical fitness and abundant energy to cover all the tonks, after covering apprx 12 km of ascending distance from ground level. From here we had the first view of the main Parasnath temple.

There was another famous temple called Jal Mandir. It was a complete white-marbled temple.

There were idols of tirthankaras and other gods inside the temple. Provision for taking food was also available at a bhawan adjacent to the main temple. We observed with much appreciation that each Jain temple was very neat and clean.

Then we progressed towards the main attraction, the Parasnath temple. Please read the next part of the travelogue, soon.

Dear Santanu

A great log. I always wanted to visit this place, but could not do so. Thanks for sharing the detailed account of the journey.

From the expanse of the hills and the tonks, it seems that plenty of time would be required to cover all of them. Hopefully, there would be either permanent or temporary accommodation available on the hill-top.

Hoping to read the next part soon…

Dear Uday, Thanks for your encouragement. I also hoped that there should be accomodation for yatris for night stay etc. at the top of the hill. But to our disappointment, nothing of that sort was available, at least for general yatris. A pilgrim has to start from gorund level early morning, preferably before sunrise. Only then it would be possible to cover some of the tonks, the Jal Mandir and the main Parasnath temple. Then he/she has to come back to ground level again before it gets dark. It is never advisable to make downward journey amidst darkness. Most importantly, one has to retain energy level to go 14 km upwards, see the temples and tonks and again come back within the same day. During shravan, however, there are plenty of pilgrims to give company. Otherwise, the hilly way through the jungle is absolutely lonely. But we seek adventure in unusul things in life. Thats the spice, which kicks ghumakkars to break the boundary of monotonous life. Regards Santanu

A few years back, we were going to Babadham/Deoghar from Dhanbad by car to attend some family ceremony. On the way back, we did discuss and kind of saw the ShikharJi hill but could not make up our mind. After looking at pictures, now we understand what did we lose.

Both Mahaveer and Budhha were from this part of India but today this whole belt (barring few cities of Jharkhand, Bihar and W.Bengal) has a lot to catch up on the front of human life indicators.

Thank you Santanu.

Dear Nandan, Yes, Parasnath Hill is a place which had lit up the light of divinity among not only the Jains and but in the hearts of traditional Hindus also. A visit to the place refreshens our body and soul. Regards Santanu

Dear Santanu,

I’m a Jain myself, very well written and informative blog for Shri Samet Shikharji Tirth. Would like to bring to your knowledge, that one of the captions given to your picture has an error. You’ve written ” Pictures of Tirthankaras hanging from wall of the temple” Actually those are Pictures of Jain Monks. Tirthankaras are Jain Gods like Mahavira, etc.

Regards, Siddharth

Dear Siddharth ji, I apologise for the error pointed out by you. Thank you for enlightening me. Santanu

Visit Shikharji Temple At Parasnath Hills: The Pride of Jharkhand

Located at an altitude of 4480 feet, Parasnath is one of the holiest places in Jharkhand and India. One of the main reasons why this place is so popular among the Jain community in India is that it is home to the sacred Shikharji temple. As Parasnath is located only 35 km from Giridih town, most people visit this temple while visiting Giridih. Shikharji temple is so famous that Jain people from all over the world visit Parasnath to visit there. The main reason why this temple is so sacred to the Jain people is that it is believed to be the site where the twenty-four Jain Tirthankars attained salvation. Jains from all sects believe this temple to be sacred. It does not create any discrimination among them. The word Shikharji in English means “highest peak”. When you will reach the location, you will understand why the site is named Shikharji. As the temple is located at the highest point of Giridih, the area has been named to justify that attribute. Image Source

Moreover, local people believe that all the Jain Tirthankars used to meditate at this peak. When the monks used to meditate there, they used to reach the zenith of their concentrations or they used to reach the Shikhar of their meditation. That might also be the reason behind the terminology of the area. As we have told earlier, Shikharji temple is located on Parasnath hills. Now, this area’s name is Parasnath because it is believed that the twenty-third Tirthankar named, Parshvanatha used to meditate in this temple. This temple is not only popular among religious people, but also, it is famous among adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers. To reach there you will have to cover a distance of approximately 44 km by foot. For many people, it is a difficult challenge, but if you are physically fit, you will have no problem covering the distance. Usually, the total journey takes a little less than 12 hours to complete. As the Shikharji temple was constructed in the 18th century, the site has immense historical significance as well. When you will enter the temple, you will see architectural designs depicting the different tenets of Jainism. Some scriptures on the walls of the temple are written in Sanskrit. Apart from the carvings, there are many murals drawn on the extremely beautiful walls of the temple. Although the temple was built in the 18th century, the primary idol inside it is believed to be from 1678. Apart from the Shikharji temple, there are other temples located in the area as well. If you are interested in visiting the Shikharji temple, you will find this blog quite handy. Here, you will get all the necessary information regarding the temple and its location. By reading this blog, you will know everything there is to know about the temple.

The Route to Parasnath Hill

As we have said earlier, Shikharji temple is situated on the Parasnath hills. Now, as the distance between the temple and the nearest bus stand is around 27 km and there is no transportation available there, you will have to reach the temple on foot. Most Jain people, cover the entire up-down journey of 54 km by foot, but if you are not ready for such a tiring mission, you can get a Doli. A Doli allows you to be carried by a Doliwallah. By availing of this option, you will not have to walk the entire way. If you avail the Doli, you will have to travel through the paved pathway. In this path, you will see many roadside stalls selling light snacks, tea, water, and coffee. Most people prefer to avail of this path as it is comparatively safer and a lot of people take this route. While traveling through this route you will get to see other important temples. Some of the temples that you will get to see are Gandhara, Kunthunatha, Naminatha, Mallinatha, Suvichran, Padmaprabha, and others.

The Route to Parasnath Hill, Jharkhand

There is another way through which you can reach the top of the Parasnath hills. That path is known as the Parikrama. By availing of this path, you will have to trek through the Madhuban forest. Now, this route does not offer any other modes of traveling other than walking. But we must tell you that this route has a spectacular scenic view. In the intersection between the Shikhar and Gandharva Nala, there is an area that is considered to be quite holy for the Jain people. Even if you are not religious, you will fall in love with this route. You will be surprised to know that the Chief Minister of Delhi added this trip to Mukhyamantri Tirth Yojana. Before taking this pathway, you must know that it is generally quite secluded. One of the main reasons why this area is less traveled is that it is comparatively difficult to travel than the other path. Also, most people want to explore the other temples while visiting the Shikharji temple. If they take this route through the Madhuban forest, they will miss out on the other temples. The entire journey would take you around 12 hours on foot.

These hills are located within the dense forests of the mountain range, making them an ideal wildlife sanctuary. The mountain is largely covered with dense forests that support a wide range of natural vegetation and wild animals that need to be protected. It takes a full day to reach the hilltop and return back.

Apart from the natural beauty , the local tribes inhabiting the area are also a striking feature of the Parasnath hills. Parasnath Hill

Jainism followers believe in Parasnath hills and visit it more often as it has a Jain temple at the hilltop. However, youth enjoy trekking through narrow paths of hills. Once you reach the destination, there is a beautiful view with lovely clouds.

Parasnath consists of temples on the hill that are as old as 2000 years old. It is known that the place was inhabited in ancient times. However, some of the temples are of more recent origin.

Importance of the Place

Shikharji (Śikharji) means the venerable peak.

It has been made accessible since the construction of a road in 1838. Significantly the oldest of the Jain temples appears to date only from AD 1775. Parasnath is the “Marang Buru ” or hill deity of the Santhals of Hazaribagh, Manbhum, Bankura and Santhal Parganas. They celebrate a hunting festival on the full moon day in Baisakh (mid April).

In his book, Mahopadhyaya Lalitprabh Sagar ji described Shikharji as follows: “When just one auspicious event of one Tirthankar can convert a place into a pilgrimage, it will be quite impossible for human intelligence to assess the holiness and power of that pilgrimage where as many as twenty Tirthankaras have lit-up the inextinguishable light of nirvana”.

Have a look at some of the major places to visit in Parasnath.

Parasnath Temple

This temple is located at a distance of 63 kilometers from the city of Dhanbad and is situated in the city of Parasnath where there are many old Jain temples.

The Parasnath Temple can be found on top of the Parasnath Hill, which is also called the Samved Shikar and stands at a height of 4431 meters above sea level. You can reach the temple by road from Dhanbad.

The delicately carved stone sculpture of Parasnath points out that the deity was restored to the temple after being sealed in a wall of the nearby Tera Panthi Shrine for many decades.

Parasnath Hills

Parasnath Hills as discussed above are a range of hills located in Giridih district of Jharkhand. The highest peak is 1350 metres. It is one of the most important pilgrimage centers for Jains. They call it Sammed Sikhar. The hill is named after Parasnath, the 23rd Tirthankara. Twenty of the twenty-four Jain Tirthankaras attained salvation on this hill. According to some, nine Tirthakaras attained salvation on this hill.

Both Digambar and Shwetambar sects of Jainism have their temples and shrines on this hill. Here there is a shrine (gumti or tuk) for each of them.

Things to take care of before starting your journey to Parasnath Hills:

  • Take some winter clothes, if you do trekking in winter. It gets pretty cold as altitude increases.
  • Take water bottles. It’s a long and tiring trek, so you will feel thirsty for sure.
  • The path to the top is highly inclined, so stay mentally prepared. I would not suggest this trek for older people.

For going upto the top, it takes normally 5 hours covering approx. 13-14 km through a short route. It is good to start from 3 am in the morning. The walkway is cemented.

The trekking on the Parasnath hills is difficult but as you go higher and higher, there are some magnificent views which you can see and capture in your camera. You can find nature at its best as while you keep climbing, there is an amazing blend of sky, clouds and hills all at one place.

Jain Museum

Jain Museum Madhuvan is a marvelous place to learn about Tirthankars, Saints and Munis of Jainism. It is located in Madhuvan town situated in the foots of Parasnath hills in Giridih district of Jharkhand India. It consists of many historic idols, a collection of postage stamps on jain tirthankars, Jain Architectures, Literatures and many more. It is a holy place for Jains. A lot of devotees and tourists arrive here in search of spiritual peace.

Jal Mandir is a work of art made out of white marble. Here you can find the merger of civil engineering and aesthetic sense to create poetry in stone. The artwork in the ceiling has lotus which is pink coloured. Even the gate, “Parshwa Sushil Dwar” is magnificent, where sculptures of mythological security persons and various religious symbols are depicted.

Best Time to Visit

Best time to visit Parasnath is from October to March when the weather is pleasant. It is the time when you will not feel hot while going for trekking or exploring the place.

Where to stay at Parasnath?

The Jains have provided rest houses at the foot of the hill at Madhuban. The food is strictly vegetarian at these places. Non-vegetarian food, even if brought from outside, is not allowed.

There is a dormitory at the foot of Parasnath, for which you have to take permission @ Rs50/- per head from the Bharatvarshiya Digamber Jain Teerth Kshetra Committee at Madhuban. This is especially for Jains who do the parikrama of “6 miles uphill, 6 miles parikrama and 6 miles downhill”. For the food in the evening one has to reach Dak Bunglow by 4.30pm. You will have hot water from early in the morning till 8 a.m., and food is served to only the pilgrims with staying permission.

Final Remarks

You cannot stop yourself from enhancing the unparalleled beauty of Parasnath hills. The place is a mixture of adventurous trekking, pilgrimage and the beautiful nature. It’s a must visit place for nature lovers and those who enjoy trekking. Hence, plan your trip to this religious place Parasnath and have a peaceful time amid nature.

The summit of Parasnath Hill can be reached either from the southern or the northern side. There are two recognized routes to Parasnath Hill. The southern approach from Isri Bazaar, to the top, is motorable for about 2 km, the rest being a climb of 8 km.

The northern approach is a 13 km route from Madhuban village on the Dumri-Giridih road. Madhuban is about 40 km from Giridih and about 10 km from Parasnath rail station/ Isri Bazaar/ Dumri, all on Grand Trunk Road (NH 2). You can take bus to travel from Dumri to Giridih and stop at Madhuban village. There are hired cars or taxis available at Isri Bazar which is outside the rail station.

You can also get ponies and dandis for the climb at short notice. Jeeps are also an option that can carry visitors for a certain distance up the hill. After that you need to walk.

How to reach Parasnath

Parashnath station on the Howrah-Delhi grand chord line is the base for a visit to Parasnath. The adjacent town is called Isri or Isri Bazar where there are Jain dharamshalas. You can take a 36 seat bus/rental car from Isri Bazar for Madhuban and the metalled trek route of 9 km to Shikharji(Parashnath). Almost all the major trains running on The Grand Chord line ( Delhi to Kolkata) stop at Parasnath station. These include New Delhi – Kolkata Rajdhani express, Puri – New Delhi purushottam express, Mumbai- Howrah mail, Ahmedabad-Asansol – Parasnath express. There is a lot of tourist volume on Parasnath station and so it is built accordingly.

Now you can also reach Parasnath by flight. Deoghar airport is the nearest airport to Parasnath with a distance of 81 Kms.

Parasnath Hill is on Grand Trunk Road NH 2.The nearby place for reaching Parasnath is Ranchi 190 KM, Bokaro 40 KM, Jhumri Tileya 80 km Dhanbad 60 KM and Hazaribagh 80 km. Distance between Deoghar to Parasnath by Road is 119 Kms. Travel Time from Deoghar to Parasnath by Road is 3:2 hrs.

Paaras_Nath Hill: A Jain Pilgrimage! Do Check out this mesmerizing natural beauty!!!

Photo of Marco Polo

Parasnath hill is situated in Jharkhand state, India. It is a pilgrimage for Jainism followers. However, people from all religions visit it. This is the highest peak in Jharkhand.

5 in the Morning: I, along with my friends, started a trip to Parasnath. It was a planned trip. Just the day before, I caught fever. But the plan had to work out.

At 6, we reached there. Had morning tea. The crest of Parasnath is called "Madhuban". It's an awesome place, very serene, pious and godly. You can easily see the jain gurus moving past you. There's a market here.  All visitors who can't climb the hill, wander around here and enjoy themselves in this holy land.

Photo of Parasnath by Marco Polo

Tips: When you are to start climbing, note that  1. you must have enough water with you, and your own food. You may get food in the way as well, but it may be costly or un-tasty for you (if it's a word lol). 2. you must buy a stick here, by paying 20-25 rupees. It'll help a lot by becoming your third leg while you climb, trust me. 3. you'll feel cold in the way if you go there during October - February. Don't forget warm clothes. 4. if you don't have enough stamina, don't go for the peak. As simple as that. You'll have no option in the midway if you feel tired. 5. Charge your phone fully. There's little or no network there. So inform your family and friends of this trip beforehand so they don't worry if your phone is unreachable.

So, We Started at around 6:30.

After walking  2 kilometres up from Madhuban, we reached to a temple, that is an example of incredible Architecture (ps: at least in my opinion). The golden temple was litera lly shining in the sun, attracting our sight and giving us one of the best place to click pictures. 👀

Then we moved ahead!

Photo of Paaras_Nath Hill: A Jain Pilgrimage! Do Check out this mesmerizing natural beauty!!! by Marco Polo

We stopped at several places, cz we were frequently getting exhausted. So just to get recharged...

Photo of Paaras_Nath Hill: A Jain Pilgrimage! Do Check out this mesmerizing natural beauty!!! by Marco Polo

Hydrating yourself is very much important cz you are walking in the sun, that too, climbing a hill drains your energy faster.

Char-paai, this was available in every stall where you could sit comfortably (free LoL) and have some food or beverages offered for a price.

This was Gandharv Nala, one of the landmarks there. Around 6 kilometres up the hill. Cold Freshwater flowing through here, produces very sweet sound and you feel like stopping here for a nap. We didn't take a nap here though. Focus! We have to reach the hill and not stop here only.

Photo of Paaras_Nath Hill: A Jain Pilgrimage! Do Check out this mesmerizing natural beauty!!! by Marco Polo

After trekking for around 7-8 kilometres up, the target was still too far away from us.

You can see that white tip right? So that's where we had to reach, the topmost point of the hill, where there's a temple.

Photo of Paaras_Nath Hill: A Jain Pilgrimage! Do Check out this mesmerizing natural beauty!!! by Marco Polo

On my way, there were many huts, where people live and sometimes ask the travellers for money or something to eat. Their life literally seems to be a v ery tough challenge.

This, i consider, is one of the best photos I've ever clicked.

Life is full of struggles, specially when you live here:))

Photo of Paaras_Nath Hill: A Jain Pilgrimage! Do Check out this mesmerizing natural beauty!!! by Marco Polo

We were consuming water so frequently that our bottles were empty soon. We had to buy a cartoon of bottles for 9 of us. That wasn't enough, we bought SHARBAT, NIMBU PANI, GANNE KA RAS, and i would suggest that you all must try them if you get a chance to visit there.

28 October, 2021, Mohit was here!!!!

We reached the first temple.

White and Golden coloured temples at 2 kilometres up the hill. Then there's this beautiful green way ahead. The statue is in one of the temples called Jal Mandir.

We then walked to the Jal Mandir.

Me in different parts of Parasnath. I guess i covered 14 kilometres in all while going up and in visiting all the temples (MaTh), all made of white marbles.

Over the hills.

Photo of Paaras_Nath Hill: A Jain Pilgrimage! Do Check out this mesmerizing natural beauty!!! by Marco Polo

It was around 12 in the afternoon when we reached the target, the highest peak, the main temple. We rested there for an hour or so for food and rest. The total distance covered till now was 16 kilometres. There was a low temperature there.

Then we began walking down the hill. It was easier to go down than to climb, obviously. In 3 hours approximately at around 4:45 pm, we reached Madhuban, the place where we started our journey from, our Mahindra Scorpio Car was parked there, we paid 50 rupees for parking. Then we all had hots or cold drinks. Took rest for a while and we were off to home:)) This truly was a memorable trip. We walked around 26 kilometres in all for 10 hours . However, many of us denied to come back again for a climb. We wer exhausted AF. At home, we suffered for two days in bed finding it extremely difficult to move our body. LoL.

Photographers suggest seven natural wonders to visit if you've been inspired by aurora australis

Fork lightening cracks through a grey sky over a red rocky, treed cliff face.

If your social media feeds are anything like mine, you've seen a lot of breathtaking pictures of the aurora australis this week.

If you're not ready to quit your day job and become a full-time aurora hunter, what are some natural phenomena that are a little more predictable to chase down?

Three landscape photographers share their favourite natural wonders to inspire your next trip.

The turning of the fagus — Cradle Mountain, lutruwita/Tasmania

Photographer Nathan Mattinson says Australia is "spoiled" when it comes to natural landscapes and phenomena worth visiting.

Based in Naarm/Melbourne last year, he visited the Cradle Mountain area for the annual "turning of the fagus".

It takes place in late April and May when the state's only winter-deciduous native tree — the Tasmanian fagus — transitions from green to orange, marking the autumn season.

It's a popular attraction in the area, and he says around Anzac Day is the best time to see it.

Nathan says you can be rewarded by travelling further afield in Tasmania but the accessibility of Cradle Mountain is "unreal".

"You can take a bus to the doorstep," he says.

turning of the fagus

A sunset in the snow — Mount Feathertop, Country of the Taungurung and Gunaikurnai people/Victoria

Nathan also recommends the Victorian high country, with a special shout-out for Mount Feathertop.

"When you're around Mount Feathertop … in the snow and you're seeing that red sun go down on the snow — that's pretty special."

He notes that the snow season can make it less accessible.

Alternatively, you could drive through Mount Hotham, along the Great Dividing Range, to see Mount Feathertop and Mount Bogong covered in snow.

He says if Victorians can pay attention to when it's forecast to snow at a lower level they can also "get treated to a show" at places closer to Melbourne, such as Mount Donna Buang.

An orange sun sets behind a snow covered alpine horizon.

Kakadu National Park, Country of the Bininj and Mungguy people/Northern Territory

For Louise Denton, a photographer and author of 'Discovering Natural Northern Territory' based in Darwin on Larrakia land, Kakadu National Park is a "special place".

There's so much diversity in such a small area, but when pushed, Louise says the eastern side of Kakadu is her favourite.

"[It's] where all that sort of really unique rock country is, you've got heaps of like endemic species that are found only in that area.

"[There are] significant Aboriginal sites around there as well, unique rock formations and imposing rock formations and loads of little pockets of rainforest within the really sheltered tall areas… it's just magic."

There are ways to explore areas with cultural sensitivity , including joining an Indigenous-run tour or enlisting an Indigenous guide.

It's about a three hours from Darwin, and while the park is expansive it's fairly easy to navigate with enough time.

She also warns, "don't just go to a place and expect to instantly see a photo, spend a bit of time there".

Litchfield National Park, Kungarakan country/Northern Territory

Louise says most visitors come to the Top End during the dry season for obvious reasons — swimming, walking, open four-wheel-drive tracks.

While it's not for everyone, Louise says there's something to be said for the wet season, with its "really unpredictable light" and "rain and lightning".

In the wet season, she went to Litchfield National Park with the intention of "photographing a storm".

"At the end of the day I hung around for sunset and I got like rainbow and sunset colours over one of the waterfalls."

One of the strengths of Litchfield, Louise says, is that it's an easy and straightforward drive from Darwin — and only about 90 minutes.

A picture of a waterfall over a rock cliff face, surrounded by trees with a rainbow stretching out across the skyline.

Sapphire Coast, Country of the Yuin-Monaro Nations/New South Wales

Nathan says "sunrises and sunsets are always pretty spectacular" along the Sapphire Coast.

He says you can really enjoy the area at any time of year, but if you're looking to make a road trip of it, summertime is probably best so you can enjoy swimming along the way.

The coastline is "rich with geomorphology and geomorphic features", Nathan says naming Horsehead Rock and Camel Rock specifically.

"The New South Wales coastlines are really special because you can drive up to a lot of those natural features."

The coastline stretches for about 90 kilometres along southern New South Wales and is half way between Melbourne and Sydney.

An arched rock formation resembling the head and neck of a horse on a beach. The sky is pink behind the rocks.

Tamar River/ Kanamaluka, lutruwita/Tasmania

Mike Turner, photographs under the alias of Michael David as a bit of a "side hobby". His job as a pilot allows for some pretty enviable travel – and equally enviable photography opportunities when he's not in Naarm/Melbourne.

Mike says he's visited Launceston's Tamar River multiple times, but the first time on a cold foggy morning was the best.

"It was spectacular," he says.

"Super tranquil, super peaceful. There was a swan that was in the water right in front of me."

He says the fog made it "isolating in a beautiful sort of way".

A little bit of planning can go a long way according to Mike even if you want to photograph something that's definitely going to be there — unlike the aurora australis.

"I had read the forecast the night before and I knew that it was going to be a really spectacular foggy morning."

A small boat hitched to a pole in a river surrounded by white fog

Wilson's Prom, Country of the Boonwurrung, Bunurong and Gunaikurnai groups/Victoria

Nathan also recommends Wilson's Promontory National Park, the southernmost tip of mainland Australia.

"White, white sandy beaches with, turquoise water."

"It's got mountains, it's got hiking, it's got big really lovely beaches," Nathan says.

He concedes "[Western Australia] has a few of those beaches as well" but for the Victorian it's a "magical place".

It's not hard to see why it makes for a spectacular photo, and restorative place about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Melbourne.

A case for sticking close to home

Mike says anyone looking to snap an incredible picture, "keep your eyes open and your ear to the ground".

It's a skill you can learn, he says.

A white weatherboard house on a sloped road, with sheets drying along a wall.

"The unexpected beauty of an everyday location, captured in the right light, subject moment and perspective, is the holy grail for me.

"You also need to be willing to stop the car, or plan ahead, so that you can jump at the opportunities that do and don't happen every day."

So for a great picture, Mike says to consider having a look around in your own backyard if travel isn't on the cards.

Inflation effects us all, but travel remains a high priority for many searching for some respite from home stresses. Ahead of the summer holidays, the United Kingdom Post Office has released their annual City Costs Barometer , showcasing the best destinations to visit that won’t break the bank.

For the 17th year running, the barometer takes data from 37 different cities across Europe, analyzing prices to calculate the most affordable city break destinations. The survey calculates the average cost for a two-night weekend stay, taking into account prices for a visit to a top heritage tourist attraction, a museum, a sightseeing bus tour, and a public transport travel card valid for the duration of the stay. Food and drink costs included in the sums range from a regular cup of filter coffee to a three-course evening meal for two people, including house wine.

The data from this survey should prove helpful to those looking to book a cheap destination holiday this summer. The interest in city breaks has grown this year in the UK, with two in five Brits opting for a city break for their next holiday, but the appeal is universal. And, this data shows that prices are down in 60 percent of cities featured, thanks to significant accommodation price drops around the continent.

Bird's eye view of Vilnius old town from Gediminas' Tower Lithuania

Vilnius is one of Europe's most underrated cities for its Cathedral and epic hiking.

The winning city for 2024 is the Lithuanian capital. Vilnius previously held the crown of best value city in 2015, 2019, and 2020, but last year only just lost out on first place to Lisbon . Its fourth win is a result of low prices across the board—the cost of a weekend racks up to about $300, more than 10 percent lower than the runner-up city, and less than half the cost of 18 out of the 37 cities featured.

Vilnius has grown in popularity recently—we named it one of Europe’s most underrated cities to visit. There are plenty of hikes to take in the surrounding countryside, many of which offer epic vistas over the city (like Gediminas Hill), and don’t skip a visit to the Vilnius Cathedral or the secret St. James Church bell tower.

In second place comes last year’s winner. Thanks to a 26 percent rise in the average accommodation cost, Lisbon slipped down a rank for 2024. The average cost for two nights in three-star accommodation is $193 this year, compared to $150 last year, raising the total cost to $335. The city is one of just three in Western European to make the top ten.

tower of Chamber of commerce buildings at central town square in Lille France

Lille, France takes third place and is notable as an affordable alternative to Paris.

In more surprising news, Lille came in third place, shooting up seven places from 10 in 2023. This is largely due to a 30 percent fall in costs, seeing the average cost of accommodation drop from $235 to $166. Interest in the French city has surged in recent years as travelers from London seek a more pocket-friendly alternative to Paris —Lille is less than 90 minutes away from London via Eurostar.

Athens dropped from fourth to fifth place, while Riga, Budapest , Bratislava, Prague , and Warsaw fill in the rest of the top 10. The list of Europe’s most expensive cities is equally as interesting—Amsterdam retains its top spot for another year with an average cost of $850 per weekend, closely followed by Belfast ($800), Edinburgh ($765), and Helsinki ($745).

Krakow Old Town town houses at Main Square

Krakow, Poland can, in parts, be mistaken for Rome.

Starting with the cheapest, the top 10 European cities for overall value in 2024 are:

  • Vilnius, Lithuania
  • Lisbon, Portugal
  • Lille, France
  • Krakow, Poland
  • Athens, Greece
  • Riga, Latvia
  • Budapest, Hungary
  • Bratislava, Slovakia
  • Prague, Czech Republic
  • Warsaw, Poland

3 takeaways from Biden's first campaign visit to Detroit

parasnath tourist place

President Joe Biden capped a long day focused on shoring up support among Black voters across the country with a speech in Detroit at the annual Detroit Branch NAACP's Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner, marking his first visit to the city this election year.

The upcoming months will test whether Biden's message resonated beyond the convention hall where many of his biggest champions in Michigan dined to reach Black voters in the Motor City and across the state who are critical to his reelection.

Biden visit underscores importance of Black voters to his reelection

In his remarks, Biden credited Black voters for putting him in the White House four years ago. "Let's be clear, because of your vote, it's the only reason I'm standing here as President of the United States of America," he said.

While exit polling showed Black voters in Michigan overwhelmingly supported Biden in 2020, Biden slightly underperformed compared to Hillary Clinton's 2016 performance in Detroit where Black voters are concentrated. While he won more votes from the city, he won a smaller share of vote total compared to Clinton. It was a pattern he repeated in most majority-Black cities in Michigan, according to a Free Press analysis of their head-to-head vote in precinct-level data from the MIT Election + Science Lab.

"We're going to do everything we can to never ever repeat that kind of result," Biden's Michigan campaign senior adviser Eddie McDonald told the Free Press last week.

Biden turns up heat with anti-Trump rhetoric

While Biden highlighted what he sees as his administration's biggest accomplishments in delivering social and economic progress for Black Americans, he drew a sharp contrast on that front with former President Donald Trump.

"He's clearly unhinged," Biden said of his GOP opponent. Trump has celebrated those who stormed the U.S. Capitol to stop Congress from certifying the 2020 presidential election as patriots, Biden noted. He went on to ask the crowd Sunday what they think Trump would have done if Black Americans had stormed the Capitol. "I'm serious," Biden said.

Biden repeatedly took aim at Trump, but ended with a final warning: "Trump isn't running to lead America. He's running for revenge," Biden said.

Michigan 2024 Election: At Detroit NAACP dinner, Biden says he needs Black voters, chides Trump

During long day, Biden acknowledges incomplete progress

While he billed his first term in office as a huge stride toward achieving racial justice, he also seemed to recognize the potential shortcomings of that message Sunday as he addressed Black voters in both Georgia and Michigan who could decide the election in the pair of battleground states.

Biden has characterized the presidential contest as a fight to preserve American democracy. But in a commencement address in Atlanta at Morehouse College − a historically Black liberal arts college for men − Biden acknowledged those who wonder whether the current political system delivers desired changes.

"It's natural to wonder if the democracy you hear about actually works for you," Biden told the graduates. "What is democracy if Black men are being killed in the street? What is democracy if a trail of broken promises still leave Black communities behind? What is democracy if you have to be ten times better than anyone else to get a fair shot?"

Biden struck a similar tone in Detroit when he wrapped up his remarks at the Detroit Branch NAACP dinner. "Folks, the idea of America is that we're all created equal and deserve to be treated equally throughout our lives. "We've never fully lived up to it, but we’ve never fully walked away from it either. But Trump will. I will not."

Scottie Scheffler shoots 66 at PGA Championship after tragic, chaotic morning

World no. 1 in contention but somber after fatality, unrelated arrest, jail visit.

Change Text Size

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After an early-morning scene that was by turns surreal, frightening and tragic, Scottie Scheffler made it to work and did his job. He played golf.

The numbers, with their attendant circles and squares, added up to a second-round 66, leaving him in contention at the PGA Championship at rain-soaked Valhalla Golf Club.

But amid the pall of the day, Scheffler was among the first to preach perspective.

“First of all, my sympathies go out to the family of Mr. Mills,” Scheffler said after reaching 9-under par, two behind Collin Morikawa (65). “I can't imagine what they're going through this morning. My situation will get handled. It was a chaotic situation and a big misunderstanding.

“I feel like my head is still spinning,” he continued. “I can't really explain what happened this morning. I did spend some time stretching in a jail cell. That was a first for me.”

Scottie Scheffler’s interview after Round 2 of PGA Championship

The narrative for Scheffler coming into the week was that he had won four of his last five tournaments, building huge leads in the Official World Golf Ranking and FedExCup. He is a new father, welcoming a son into the world with wife Meredith last week. He’s attempting to win his second straight major, becoming the first player to get halfway to the calendar-year Grand Slam since Jordan Spieth in 2015.

And yet all of that became secondary as events unfolded early Friday.

At 5 a.m. local time, a man whom the PGA of America said was “a worker with one of our vendors,” and who was later identified as John Mills, was fatally struck by a shuttle bus outside the club entrance. At around 6 a.m., with traffic at a standstill, Scheffler, trying to make his tee time, was arrested for reckless driving and disregarding the signals of an officer, whom the police report contends attached himself to Scheffler’s car and was dragged, suffering injuries.

Handcuffed, Scheffler was driven to jail and booked into a holding cell. He was issued an orange jumpsuit and watched his saga play out on a TV tuned to ESPN. He was discharged on his own recognizance and made his tee time, which had been pushed back 80 minutes due to the fatal accident and traffic backup on Shelbyville Road.

It was a feat of compartmentalization to find the composure to compete. After the round, he reiterated that it was a “chaotic situation” and “a misunderstanding” but praised the Louisville Metro Police Department and police everywhere for doing a hard, vital job.

“I was pretty rattled to say the least,” he said. “The officer that took me to the jail was very kind. He was great. We had a nice chat in the car, that kind of helped calm me down. I was sitting there waiting to kind of go in and I asked him, I was like, ‘Hey, excuse me, can you just come hang out with me for a few minutes so I can calm down?’ I was never angry. I was just in shock, and I think my body was just – I was shaking the whole time.”

Among the charges against him, the most serious is felony second-degree assault of a police officer. His lawyer has said he will be exonerated, and Scheffler said in a statement before his round that he was “proceeding as directed by police officers” but amid the chaos – it was dark and raining, with cars everywhere – there was a misunderstanding.

He also said his situation was secondary in importance to the tragic death of Mills.

Despite everything, he had plenty of time to warm up before the round and birdied his opening hole, the par-5 10th, as well as the par-4 12th to immediately settle into the round. He birdied the par-5 18th, as well.

Scheffler made three birdies and no bogeys on the front nine, his second nine of the day, and signed for a 66 that he will no doubt remember for the rest of his life. He said he was calmed, in part, by members of his team, including his parents, who gave him a hug upon his arrival at Valhalla; his agent; and his longtime coach, Randy Smith.

Doing what he loves, Scheffler added, also helped him calm down.

“I was shaking for like an hour,” he said. “It was definitely a new feeling for me. … The officers inside the jail were tremendous. A couple of them made some jokes I think when they figured out who I was and what happened and how I ended up there. …

"I mean, they were really kind. I'm grateful that we have such strong police, and they're our protectors out there, and like I said, we just got into a chaotic situation this morning. That's really all it was.”
