Fab service

I needed euros went into the southwick branch was served by Karen. She was so helpfull went up & beyond to make sure i got the euros i needed. Young couple's holiday 'ruined' after travel money shop 'gives them the wrong currency'

A young couple said their holiday to Poland was ruined after a travel money shop gave them Turkish Lira instead of Polish Zloty (PLN).

Paris Kelly, 20, and Marc Mcgeachy, 21, were then left without money for a taxi to their hotel or to buy food when they landed. The couple had planned their one-week Poland trip six months ago and were excited to jet off on 5 January.

They went to Ramsdens travel money shop in Glasgow on 4 January hoping to get some cash for their holiday. The young pair handed over £400 and hoped to receive 2,000 PLN back.

But when they arrived in Poland, Paris and Marc went to get a taxi from the airport to their hotel and the taxi driver told them they had the wrong currency. They had been given 2,000 Turkish Lira which is only around £50.

Paris, who lives in Stepps, North Lanarkshire, told Glasgow Live : "It was our first time going there and we were quite excited. I put it (money) in my bag and never thought anything of it.

"We were flying out early the next morning (January 5) so it wasn’t until we got to Poland and we were getting a taxi from the airport to our hotel when we realised - the taxi driver told us this isn’t the right currency. I had never been in that country before and was scared that the taxi driver wouldn’t accept the money. I did not know what to do.

"I didn’t have any other way of paying except for the cash I had. It was a nightmare and we were terrified. After that, we just wanted to go home. We really thought that was going to ruin the rest of our holiday."

The taxi driver kindly dropped the couple off at their hotel anyway and said he would get the Turkish Lira transferred into PLN. Paris then contacted Ramsdens and the travel money shop apologised and later transferred the money owed into Marc's account.

She added: "We had to phone Ramsdens while we were in the taxi and they told us that they knew this had happened and tried to contact me. I asked them what am I supposed to do?

"We arrived in Poland around 1pm and it wasn’t until 5pm when they transferred the money over. We were left without money for four hours, we were starving and couldn’t get anything to eat. We just had to sit in the hotel room until they transferred the money over.

"I’ve used them previously to go to Greece and my gran uses them religiously. She told me to go to them and said they were reliable and then this happened. I think it’s a joke that this was allowed to happen, I don’t understand how it can happen and I don’t think I’ll ever use them again. It made the start of our holiday very difficult."
