Casio Pro Trek PRG-80L watch: Wrist survival kit
If you want to survive mountain climbs and jungle hikes then the Casio Pro Trek PRG-80L watch could help -- just do some weight training first
There are watches that tell the time and there are watches that will save your life. The Casio Pro Trek PRG-80L is firmly in the latter group and is specifically designed with adventure in mind. This is not one of Casio's low-mid range digital watches you can pick up at Argos for £20: this is a super-watch that's so feature-packed even we're not sure what all the buttons do.
What we do know is that it comes with an altimeter that measures your altitude to up to 32,800ft, which is 3,765ft more than Everest. There's a digital compass that will let you find your way in the depths of a desert, forest, jungle or any other desolate place you decide to go to.
You can also measure pressure with the built-in barometer, so you can predict oncoming storms when you're halfway up a mountain, and you can even tell how hot or cold it is with the built-in thermometer.
Of course, in order to have all these features the watch has to sacrifice a tiny little bit of wrist space -- okay, it's like wearing a dustbin lid on your arm. The Pro Trek PRG-80L measures 54mm wide, 60mm tall and 17mm deep. It also weighs 76g, which is about the same weight as a BenQ-Siemens S68 mobile phone. This is not a watch built for the faint-hearted, but if you're going to climb mountains or battle your way through jungles it shouldn't prove too large or heavy to wear.
It currently retails for around £180 and is available from specialist watch shops and online. -AL

Casio Pro Trek PRG-80 vs. Suunto Advisor...???
- Add to quote
I am thinking about my next "non-G" Casio, and am loooking at the Casio Pro Trek PRG-80. How does the baraometer, temperature, etc. function compared to the Suunto? How accurate are the readings? Does your body temp affect the readings as much as it does on the Suunto?
Interesting....I'm looking at a Suunto Vector or maybe one of the ProTreks. I'm leaning toward the Suunto just because I can get one at a hefty discount through work.
I can only speak of the prg-70.. one of my most recent additions.. yes.. body temp does affect temp reading..as there is a way to calibrate the thermometer.., it would prove futile as clothing and enviroment affect body temp. the device requires a 20-30 min. enviroment adjusting period off of the body. the compass is fairly accurate, however, structure will impede accurate readings. hope this helps!! :-!
I have some posts about the Suunto, where the battery does not last long, battery is hard to change, and if changed, the waterproof seals can be compromised. I have been looking at the Suunto line for some time, but haven't taken the plunge yet. I am waiting for the new ProTrek 1100 to be released. Waiting to hear back for Seiya.

frhoads said: ProTrek PRW-1100-1BJ =is= out. I have one. I got it from Seiya yesterday. Ordered it last week. It is just terrific. Sapphire crystal. Synchs with 5 atomic clocks. 356 USD delivered. The only negative in my book is that the strap is connected with a proprietary system. I think it would be hard to replace with anything but another ProTrek strap. Click to expand...
Sjors said: I think the band is hard to replace. The band is special shaped to the model and is streamlined integrated with the case. The PRG-80 looks very much like the PRW-1100. I suspect the case is exact the same. Check these pictures: Cheers, Sjors Click to expand...
You see the metal pieces that say protrek and well I don't remember what the other one says on it but it is the same as the bottom one. you will see two holes on both sides of this metal thing stick a needle in the hols and push then the plate will come off(there is 2 springbars holding the band and the plate on like in the MTG-520) Cheers Leon

Jeff_C said: Feel free to email me if you want. [email protected] I have posted this here before, and no one wants to listen to me. I have a Suunto Observer and have had 3 different Protreks. The observer is FAR FAR FAR FAR more accurate and Plenty durable. The Observer is 100M WR which is a downfall of may of the other Suuntos, But then again, they are field instruments not dive watches. All that said, Suunto Advisors, are being tested by US SF forces in Iraq and Afghanastan. They are PLENTY tough enough. My buddy has one and its been through the stuff and come out working fine. One advantage of most of the Suuntos is actually their battery changing. I know someone posted this was a problem but its not. Kits are readily available from REI and other shops and you can EASILY replace a battery AND the seals. (Seal kits are also available). Protreks are NOT accurate. Sorry folks. i know you hate hearing that... And i know you hate hearing this too.. My High Gear and my Nike Oregon watches are BOTH way more accurate than any of the protreks i have had. The adavatage goes to Casio when it comes to the solar though! Again, if you want more details and or pics, feel free to email me. Im not very popular here when i state these experiences. Click to expand...
Jeff C, I appreciate your post. Again as I said, I have only heard of problems but have never owned a Suunto. I have always wanted one, but have never taken the plunge. It is posts like this, that make me consider all types of watches.

"bump"
Given the choice between prw-1100 and suunto observer i would definately go for the suunto, no question about it. You simply buy more functions and utility for that kind of money. Sorry casio but the price for the prw-1100 is to say the least for laughs <|<|<|
have anyone here used suunto x6 watch? its even better than observer or advisor from suunto.the best thing about suunto is there better accuracy and user replaceable battery option ,that u can change battery just by opening the back with coin. casio protreks have only one feature that suuntos dont have that is soalr power .other than that sorry to say suunto watches are way better overall compared to protreks from casio ,whose technology has improved very little in last 10 years apart from the solar power feature. jeff is right that nike ,high gear ,suunto etc companies have gone far ahead of casio in protrek watch technology, though casio was the first watch brand to make these outdoor watches.thats why most professional hikers nowadays prefer suunto and timex etc watches compared to casio, which is rather sad for me ,as casio was my first love.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
